Short on time? A one-day safari in Kenya’s Lake Nakuru

Kenya Lake Nakura

Two common misconceptions about taking an African safari are that you need to have a lot of money and a lot of time. When I was a broke backpacker, I spent time in Nairobi, Kenya, and found a $100 one-day trip to Lake Nakuru where I was able to enjoy a safari without committing to a multi-day excursion.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for TPG daily newsletter .

If you are stationed in Nairobi and are short on time, Lake Nakuru is a perfect way to spend a day out of the city. On tour day, expect to be picked up before the sun has risen, likely sometime between 4 and 5 a.m. Luckily, Kenya has some of the best coffee in the entire world thanks to its high altitude and ever-high presence of fertile soil.

A driver will meet you in your Nairobi hotel lobby. From there, you will begin your two-and-a-half hour journey from the city journey to Lake Nakuru. Along the way, you'll likely stop for a coffee or a quick bite to fuel up for a long day. You might also stop at a shop where safari-goers can purchase locally crafted souvenirs. I remember seeing a necklace that I wanted badly, but as mentioned, I was traveling on a budget. Oh, the regret you'll have for the things you didn't buy!

Once you arrive to Lake Nakuru, each person must pay an entry fee of $35, but, depending on what type of tour you booked, this fee might already be included in your tour cost. Upon payment, you'll receive your ticket and be granted entry into a world that feels far from anything you've seen before. Tip : Bring a good camera on any African safari. A GoPro or even an iPhone simply won't do the trick.

Be prepared to move slowly and be utterly quiet. The animals don't like to be disturbed, and in Lake Nakuru, animals' needs reign higher than people's needs. Though everyone's experience will be different, you can expect to see gazelle, zebra, monkeys and even some rare rhinos thanks to the on-site sanctuary .

If you keep your eyes peeled, you may also spot lions, leopards, African bush elephants and African buffalo. I was fortunate enough to see black rhinoceros and African buffalo on my one day in Lake Nakuru, further proving that you don't need a lot of time and/or money to enjoy a proper African safari.

Lake Nakuru is particularly known for its excessive flamingo population , which is what drew me to book this day-trip in the first place. However, as we pulled up to the actual lake, I was astounded to see there were hardly any flamingos at all.

Climate change has caused the water to dramatically flood over the past several years, making the flamingo population at the shore sparse. Don't let those Google images fool you: It's unlikely you will see the flocks of flamingos Lake Nakuru is so famous for.

As you drive past the lake and circle back toward the exit, be prepared to see giraffes slowly grazing and crossing the pathways. Watching these majestic creatures in their natural habitat will make you wonder how big-game hunters have the heart to do what they do.

As you finally exit Lake Nakuru, your tour guide will likely offer you an option to stop at Lake Naivasha on the ride back to Nairobi, where you can take a boat safari to see hippos and more birds. If you're too tired or decide to opt out, you can instead stop for a traditional Kenyan meal of ugali and samaki. Don't forget to try the local beer, Tusker.

1 day safari in kenya

While this one-day African safari means an early morning and a packed travel schedule, it's a perfect option for those who are short on time, finances, or both when traveling through Kenya. Flights from New York - John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Nairobi start at 44,000 miles + $5.60 with United MileagePlus.

Welcome to Kenya’s most accessible yet incongruous safari experience. Set on the city’s southern outskirts, Nairobi National Park (at 117 sq km, it’s one of Africa’s smallest) has abundant wildlife which can, in places, be viewed against a backdrop of city skyscrapers and airliners coming in to land – it’s the only national park on earth that borders a capital city. Remarkably, the animals seem utterly unperturbed by it all.

Nairobi National Park has acquired the nickname ‘Kifaru Ark’, a testament to its success as a rhinoceros (kifaru in Kiswahili) sanctuary. The park is home to the world’s densest concentration of black rhinoceros (over 50). But even proximity to Kenya’s largest city couldn’t prevent poachers from killing one of the park’s rhinos in August 2013. It was the first such attack in six years.

Lions and hyenas are also commonly sighted within the park; park rangers at the entrance usually have updates on lion movements. You’ll need a bit of patience and a lot of luck to spot the park’s resident cheetahs and leopards. Other regularly spotted species include gazelle, warthog, zebra, giraffe, ostrich and buffalo.

The park’s wetland areas also sustain approximately 400 bird species, which is more than in the whole of the UK.

Ivory Burning Monument

Not far inside the park’s main Langata Road Gate, the Ivory Burning Monument marks the spot where, in 1989, Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi burnt 12 tons of ivory at a site near the main gate. This dramatic event improved Kenya’s conservation image at a time when East African wildlife was being decimated by relentless poaching.

Getting There & Around

Apart from the main entrance, which lies 7km from the CBD, there are other gates on Magadi Rd and the Athi River Gate; the latter is handy if you’re continuing on to Mombasa, Amboseli or the Tanzanian border. The roads in the park are passable with 2WDs, but travelling in a 4WD is never a bad idea, especially if the rains have been heavy.

Unless you already have your own vehicle, the cheapest way to see the park is on the park shuttle, a big KWS bus that leaves the main gate at 2pm on Sunday for a 2½-hour tour. You need to book in person at the main gate by 1.30pm. There was talk of this service being discontinued so ring ahead to avoid disappointment.

1 Day Masai Mara National Reserve Safari

Important Safari Information

A 1 Day Masai Mara National Reserve Safari is indeed short, but it can be done and you will get to see the Big 5. If you’re coming from Nairobi, taking an internal flight direct to Masai Mara would be ideal, as this takes just 50 minutes if your budget allows for it.

If you travel by road, you’ll have a long drive, however, you will arrive in time for two game drives and enough time to have your lunch and more. In summary, it is possible and indeed worth it, however, if you can commit more time, two or three days would be even better.

With one full day in Masai Mara, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic safari destination with a dusk-to-dawn game drive that will include lunch at one of the incredible picnic spots overlooking a wildlife watering hole.

Animals on a Masai Mara safari?

The reserve is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and African buffalo) and has the highest concentration of Big Cats not just in East Africa but worldwide making the location a perfect research center for hyenas and Big Cats.

World famous for hosting the epic Great Migration, the Masai Mara welcomes 1.5 million wildebeests onto its sprawling savannahs each July through October. Other wildlife that visitors can expect to find include abundant elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs alongside the migratory animals and zebra.

With over 450 animal species, visitors can also have a clear view of animals catching them in action when on a hot-air balloon African safari early in the morning. Leopards are frequently encountered, endangered black rhinos hide in the dense thickets and large rafts of hippos and enormous crocodiles are found in the Mara River crossings.

Best time to go on a Masai Mara safari?

To avoid crowds, the low-season months of April to May and November to December see fewer visitors than the rest of the year. While this isn’t the best time for wildlife viewing, there are always animals around. April and May are the wettest months, but you’ll be rewarded with spectacular scenery and an abundance of baby animals.

Midsummer can get busy though, so come at the beginning or end of that period with its full-on wildlife without crazy crowds. Even during the high season, some areas of the Mara are busier than others, but for a really exclusive safari experience, you can book into one of the private conservancies bordering the Masai Mara.

Fly or drive to Masai Mara?

On a day trip safari, flying and driving to the Masai Mara are both viable options, with flying bringing obvious time savings (50 minutes from Nairobi) and incredible views of the wildlife and landscape. Flying also comes with a higher price tag. The drive to the Mara takes almost 6 hours, with the last 100km/62 miles of the road quite poor. Fly-in safaris usually include top-end accommodation and all your activities.

On a day trip tour of the Mara, you can easily break up the drive with a stopover. Lake Nakuru NP is the most popular option. This Rift Valley lake teems with birdlife, and this is the best place in Kenya to see rhinos, which are very difficult to spot in the Masai Mara, as well as the hustle and bustle of African countryside life.

Another great option is to spend a night at Hell’s Gate NP. The dramatic scenery is the main attraction and, as there are few dangerous animals, cycling and hiking are permitted in the park.

Will I get to meet the Maasai people?

Yes, meeting the wonderful Maasai people and getting to know all about their lives is a highlight of any visit here. Many lodges and safari companies employ Maasai as guides and drivers, and also as employees in their lodges and tented camps.

Most can also arrange visits to local Maasai communities if this is possible before booking your Kenya safari. It can be difficult to interact meaningfully with the Maasai on such occasions, although you can learn a great deal if you take the time to talk with those guiding you, serving your food, or cleaning your rooms.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. what is the best part of masai mara.

The best part of Masai Mara is the renowned and remote western section of the reserve, known as the Mara Triangle. It is managed as a non-profit conservancy run by the local Maasai and is considered one of the best areas for game viewing in the area.

2. What animals will I see on a day trip to Masai Mara?

Visitors on a 1 day Masai Mara safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

3. How much spending money do I need for a 1 day Masai Mara safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $300 for a Kenya safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Kenyan safaris can be more expensive than their continental counterparts due to the higher costs of accommodation and food.

Where to see Elephants: Amboseli National Park Safari

If elephants are your thing, you have to experience Amboseli Park . Known as the best spot in Africa to see great herds of big-tusked elephants on parade. We’ll head south to the Tanzania border with the beacon of Mt. Kilimanjaro guiding our way as we take in the glorious African sunrise.

Once in the park, you are guaranteed to see elephant families marching before the majestic backdrop of Kilimanjaro. We’ll also be looking for lion, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, and more. Breakfast, lunch, and lots of game drives are included in this total discovery adventure.

Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island & Hell’s Gate Park Safari

Who wouldn’t want to visit a place called Hell’s Gate? Named for its intense geothermal activity of geysers and hot springs, the park also offers one-of-a-kind bicycling safaris! Yes, you can pedal past grazing gazelle, zebra, giraffe, and more.

But that’s just one of the three parks we’ll explore. Lake Naivasha is a stunning high-elevation lake filled with hippos and exotic birds that we’ll sail by on a boating safari. We’ll be up early for this adventure but it’s worth it. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a special refuge for chimpanzees and rhinos. It’s the only place in Kenya where you can see chimps, protected, and nursed back to good health. Rhinos too!

The Conservancy is the closest place to Nairobi where you can find all of Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. So, there will be lots of wildlife to track during this day of adventure and quieter moments observing the chimps and rhinos. Of special note: on our voyage out to the park, we’ll catch views of snow-capped Mt. Kenya and also mark the unique moment when we cross the equator.

Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, & Crescent Island Safari

One of the prettiest parks anywhere, Lake Nakuru National Park is a picturesque blend of acacia forest, waterfalls, and the blue alkaline waters of the lake. You’ll be entertained by the pelicans, kingfishers, ostriches, and sometimes flocks of dazzling pink flamingoes harboring the shores.

This is another great spot for rhino spotting – the sanctuary here protects great herds of endangered black rhinos. And if all this natural wonder wasn’t enough, your tour serves up more wildlife encounters at nearby Lake Naivasha , and the private island enclave of Crescent Island, where you’ll finish the day with a guided walking safari.

1.      nakuru national park day trip experience.

Your 1 day Nakuru trip is a great way to escape from Nairobi for a full day watching great African wildlife and the Great Rift Valley along the way. The Nakuru day tour is very convenient as the roads are graded all the way and there are lots of wildlife to see en route. The rift valley lakes of Naivasha and Elementaita are along your way and if you are lucky might catch a glimpse of the pink flamingos along their shores. The nakuru national park day trip is the most visited of the great rift valley lakes in Kenya.

1 day safari in kenya

Although you don’t have the elephant in lake Nakuru, all the other big five animals are well represented here with lots of great birdlife to boot. There are also great attractions and sites inside the park to complete your dream of a short African safari when on a layover or transiting through Nairobi.

Lake Nakuru is lined with Acacia forest which provides a tranquil feel while driving under its canopy. Look up for the rare but occasional sighting of a sleeping leopard. If you are double lucky, then you could discern the bulky shape of an African rock python wound around the acacia tree branches. A Lake  Nakuru national park day trip is one of the most peaceful and relaxing 1 day getaway from Nairobi .

The ease of doing game drives in Nakuru national park makes this park the go to park if you want a guaranteed sighting of black or white rhino or the rare and endangered Rothschild giraffe. If you are lucky in your Nakuru day safari , you might encounter the rare stripped hyena or the klipspringer antelope. Leopards too come out of their perches quite early and you might find one walking beside your game drive vehicle on the park roads.

2.      Nakuru National Park Distance

Lake Nakuru National Park is located some 160km north west of Nairobi city. This is following the main highway in Kenya, the A109 that traverses Mombasa to Malaba border. The driving hours from Nairobi depends heavily on the traffic which can sometimes be very heavy. It takes about 2.5hrs to 3 hrs to get to Lake Nakuru.

You are advised to have an early start at 5.00hrs or 0600hrs at the latest. This allows you to maximize on the time spent on the game drive. Nakuru national park is only 177sqkm in size and that takes you about 4hours to do a full game drive.  Since the park is fenced, game driving and wildlife viewing is pretty easy.

The Nakuru park roads are all weather and well maintained by the Kenya Wildlife service. However, the lake experiences occasional flooding and this floods all the road networks around the lake. These become impassable and you have to use the secondary lake circuit park roads. In some cases this park has been cut into two sections that can be only accessed using different gates due to the floods.

If you are on self-drive or a hired vehicle, you may need to account for the mileage to include the local game driving distances within the park. You would as such have to consider the 160km x 2 for the to and flo trip from Nairobi and an extra 70km inside the park. Depending on your estimated fuel consumption of your vehicle, it would be easy to calculate how much fuel you will need to do the entire Nakuru national park 1 day trip .

3.      Timing and Opening Hours of Nakuru Day Trip

To make good time, make sure to start early from Nairobi before dawn. Although that may deny you about an hour of countryside views, atleast you will get awesome views of the Great Rift Valley. Less than an hour from Nairobi, you will start your descent into the Great Rift Valley on the eastern escarpment. The views down below are just breathtaking.

Nakuru national park opens its gates at 0630hrs so you may not have a chance to make it there by dawn if you are on a day trip . Since the earliest you can depart from Nairobi is 0500hrs, this means you can only get to the park gate at 0730hrs at the earliest.

You have the full day to watch the animals in a game drive until 0630hrs when the Nakuru park gates close. Since you need day light time to drive back to Nairobi, you will need to depart Nakuru national park at 1530hrs at the latest. That allows a 3hr drive back to Nairobi in day light and allow for an extra 30 minutes for the traffic. Sometimes the traffic can be worse and you spend over 5hrs on your way back.

The Nakuru national park day trip works best if you have an early arrival flight into Nairobi before 0600hrs and a late departure flight from 2100hrs. This takes into consideration of any traffic gridlocks that may occur to ensure you don’t miss your evening flight.

4.      The Drive to Nakuru National Park Day Trip

Your drive to Nakuru national park day tour is very dramatic both in terms of the scenery and the wildlife. On leaving Nairobi, you will climb into the lush green kikuyu highlands. Here you will see children going to school predawn while their mothers are taking milk silver cans to milk collection centers. Men on foot and on bicycles and motorbikes are rushing to work or to their businesses. It always amazes guests just how early Kenyans wake up to go to work.

Once you start the descent into the floor of the Great Rift Valley, you driver will give you a pit-stop at a view point. Here you can see the entire valley below with the volcanic mount Suswa and mount Longonot. Driving along the sides of Mt Longonot is such an awe-inspiring adventure en-route to Lake Nakuru. The latter is still active to date and intermittently spews ash and smoke. Further afield you can see the vapor plumes shooting into the sky from the Hells gate geothermal wells.

5.      Why Is Nakuru Park So Special?

Why would you chose to go for a Nakuru national park day trip as opposed to other parks? Nakuru national park is one park that has it all. This park is fully fenced with electric fence to keep the wildlife in, keep out the poachers and reduce human encroachment. The park is surrounded by a heavy human settlement and this has for a long time created ugly human /wildlife conflicts. The bottom line is that Nakuru is one of the most secure parks for wildlife.

This park was started as a sanctuary for the pink flamingos. For the longest time, the park has been considered as the greatest bird spectacle in the world with its over 2 million flamingos lining its shores. Not only will the flamingos serenade your view, but the great white pelicans will perform a synchronized fishing dance for you as they swim in unison and dive their beaks together in the water.

The views of the lake and the surrounding shade provided by the acacia forest offers one of the most exciting sceneries of African wilderness. You will also have an opportunity to drive to the baboon cliff to have that magical view of the lake from atop.

Nakuru is also known for great sites like the Makaila water falls that roar ever so loudly during the wet season when the river is flooded. The euphorbia candelabrum forest is the largest in Africa. Wildlife in Nakuru is easy to view since the park is fenced up and a 4hr game drive is enough to see them all.

6.      Animals to See In a Nakuru Day Trip

A Nakuru day trip game drive is very rich in wildlife abundance due to the fact that the park is only 177sqkm wide and all the animals are fenced in. Although there are no elephants in Lake Nakuru, there are plenty of other animals to see here, making a one day trip to Lake Nakuru worth your time.

Here you will see plenty of lions, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, leopards, baboons, cheetahs, buffalos, hyenas, elands, zebras among others. The lions are especially interesting as they have mastered the art of climbing trees. The leopards can in the early evening and mornings be seen walking along the game drive tracks just next to your vehicle. The white rhinos, for some reason like to lie down afew feet from the game drive tracks and are unbothered by the vehicle traffic. Your Nakuru national park day trip is the only 1 say safari from Nairobi that guarantees you a sighting of a rhino.

Some of the very rare animals you will see in Lake Nakuru national park include the striped hyena and the klipspringer antelope. This antelope resides on cliffs and never ventures into the savannah. The Rothschild giraffes aka white socks, can only be found here and they are the most endangered species of giraffes in Kenya.

An occasional hippo, will come out of the water if the weather is cool enough and if you are very lucky, you may see an African rock python wrapped around an acacia tree or making an antelope kill. The opportunistic hyena, will always grab a sickly flamingo from the shores of the lake and can be seen running off into the woods with a bird dangling on its mouth.

A menacingly staring buffalo male will be half way deep in the mud on the lake shores. This is the single most dangerous animal to approach in the African savannah. Make sure to alight on the shores if the coast is clear of lone buffalo males.

7.      Birds to See In a Nakuru Birding Day Trip

This park was originally started as a sanctuary for birds. Lake Nakuru is the most ideal place for bird watching and is one of the top 10 important bird areas in Kenya. A 1 day Nakuru bird watching safari will introduce you to over 450 species of different birds found here.

Of course the main bird of interest here is the flamingos. These birds form a pink ribbon around the lake which can be seen from miles away. There are so many other water birds like the cormorants, herons, ibis, hammerkorps, kingfishers, African fish eagle, and giant white pelican among others.

Birds found in the savannah include the kori bustard, the secretary bird with its knack for snakes and small rodents, go away bird, Madagascar bee eater, plovers among others. We also have lots of birds of prey including the martial eagle and the tawny eagle.

The list of birds is concluded with the scavengers including the vultures and others.

A one day Nakuru birding trip will easily allow you to identify over 100 bird species. You will need to be guided by an experienced bird guide to be able to make a great bird watching trip in Nakuru national park.

Most tour companies will insist you carry along your binoculars but will offer a guide book to east African birds for reference. If you are a birder, a Nakuru 1 day bird watching trip is a must if you have a full day at your disposal in Nairobi.

8.      Sites within Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru biggest attraction if definitely the lake itself. The lake occupies about one third of the park area. It’s a shallow lake with its deepest point at 7 meters deep. This alkaline lake is fed by 1 river and has no known outlet. This alkaline nature of the lake promotes growth of algae which is the primary food for the flamingos.

There are hundreds of birds including the flamingos on Lake Nakuru and you are allowed to make stops at certain points on the shores. You can actually alight from your safari vehicle and walk to the shore to see the flamingos at a closer view and take photos.

The yellow fever acacia forest is next to the lake and is a beautiful scene where most of the forest wildlife reside. The impalas, black rhinos, leopards, wildebeests, cheetahs will at times be seen taking cover from the sun under the acacia tree canopy.

The savannah grasslands near the airstrip is also a great scenery where you will find the lions, impalas, zebras, buffalos and many other plains game. It’s here that you can witness a lion pride hunting or a cheetah chase.

There are also several camp sites and picnic sites that have great views. You can take your packed lunch at any of these sights and take in the view only 2 hours from Nairobi. Nakuru national park day trip is one of the best one-day safaris from Nairobi if you have more than 12 hours to spare.

9.      Where to Eat In a Nakuru Day Trip

Most Nakuru day trips include a lunch break from the game drive in one of the few lodges in Nakuru national park. One of the best lodges for a buffet lunch during your 1 day Nakuru safari is the Sarova lion hill lodge. The location on a hill offers un-paralleled views of the lake below. Their buffet lunch is very expansive and caters more than one types of menus including vegans. The buffet lunch is also a highlight in a nakuru national park day trip.

Sopa lodge is among the new additions of lodges in the park and offers large views from the restaurant. This lodge has a great menu with fresh meats, vegetables and fruits. You can also decide to go for a 1hr swim to wash away the dust from your 1 day Nakuru game drive .

Another great place to go for a one day Nakuru safari lunch is the lake Nakuru lodge. This is the oldest lodge in Nakuru national park . The lodge is built in the old colonial fashion and offers great views and expansive grounds. Their food is great and at great prices too.

If you are on a budget Nakuru day trip , you can carry some packed lunch from Nairobi and take it from one of the picnic sites in the park. The baboon, cliff, Makalia falls and the airstrip are great places to eat your packed lunch as you gaze fixedly at the savannah or the falling water for that matter.

10. How to Get To Nakuru National Park

If you are on a planned day tour to Nakuru national park , your tour driver will pick you from your Nairobi hotel for the drive. You will drive along the A109 due north westwards and through the rift valley floor. This gives you up close views of the Great Rift Valley from the eastern escarpment.

Your driver will make a bathroom it stop at the rift valley view point and you will get to know how the valley below was formed. The Mt Longonot and Mt Suswa are easily visible and at one point you will be driving along the Mt Longonot on the floor of the rift valley.

The departure is at 0500hrs to allow you to get to Nakuru in good time for the morning game drive. Arrival at Nakuru for your 1 day trip is at 0800hrs. The view is also littered with lakes and wildlife roaming from private ranches.

You can do a one day Nakuru self-drive trip from Nairobi by hiring a 4×4 or a small saloon car from any one of the many car hire companies in Nairobi. The one day car hire can cost you $30 for the day excluding fuel. For the 4×4 vehicle the charge for a one day hire starts from $150 excluding fuel. The advantage of a 4×4 is of course the fact that it’s higher and you are able to see wildlife in the tall grass as opposed to the smaller low clearance salon vehicle.

Best one day safari destinations in Kenya and Tanzania

Best one day safari destinations in Kenya and Tanzania : Never undervalue the enjoyment that a one-day safari may provide. You can still choose to go on a safari even if your trip is limited in length. This is our summary of the top locations for a one-day safari experience.

1 day safari in kenya

Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Crater.

Take a one-day safari excursion from Arusha to see one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. The largest intact, unflooded caldera in the world is the Ngorongoro Crater. A safari inside the Ngorongoro Crater offers much more than just amazing wildlife viewing, especially if you can spend one night here. The crater’s walls rise up to 600 metres. All of Africa’s most exotic wildlife, including as zebras, ostriches, buffalo, antelope, and rhinos, can be found in the Ngorongoro Crater. It also has all of the Big Five , although giraffes are not found inside the crater since the sheer cliffs make it difficult for them to enter and exit. On your way to the crater, though, you might come across giraffes.

Since it takes four to five hours to go to Ngorongoro Crater from Arusha, a one-day safari is extremely hurried. We advise including a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater on a two-day or longer safari, if time permits. If you can stay overnight, witnessing the dawn and sunset from the edge of the crater is also a truly amazing experience.

Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire National Park is an excellent safari destination for a one-day safari if witnessing elephants is your top safari goal. This safari destination perfectly captures the essence of a safari with its abundant elephant population and stunning baobab trees. You can have a full day of safari and yet return to Arusha in the evening if you’re prepared for an early start. Tarangire is about a three-hour drive from Arusha. Four of the Big Five can be seen at Tarangire, and sightings of elephants and lions are common. Unfortunately, you will not find rhino in Tarangire and spotting a leopard can also be hard work.

Arusha National Park.

The reason the location is so appealing is because many tourists choose to visit the more well-known Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park instead of Arusha National Park. Arusha National Park, which is less crowded and has an amazing setting beneath Mount Meru, provides excellent opportunities for observing wildlife. It also offers single-day walking and vehicle safaris. Although it is unusual, it is possible to see leopards in this park. Elephant sightings are likewise infrequent, but you may expect to see flamingos, buffalo, hippo, zebra, and wildebeest, among other unusual creatures. The greatest concentration of giraffes in the world can be found in Arusha National Park. Arusha National Park is an excellent choice for a single day safari because it is conveniently located near both Arusha and the Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Lake Manyara National Park.

Lake Manyara is the best option if you’re searching for a somewhat more distinctive Tanzanian safari experience . This national park is well-known for its enormous numbers of flamingos and cormorants, which are found near the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara. It also has hippos, giraffes, and large herds of elephants, in addition to the unusual Manyara lions, who are renowned for their extraordinary tree-climbing abilities. A single day safari in Lake Manyara is a long day, but it’s still well worth the effort, as it takes about three hours to get there from Arusha.

Nairobi National Park.

Best one day safari destinations in Kenya and Tanzania

Kenya’s oldest national park is the ideal safari destination if you’re on a tight schedule, located just 7km from the city heart of Nairobi. Nairobi National Park offers amazing game viewing, with regular sightings of rhinos, giraffes, lions, buffalos, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, and gazelles. You can even see the city skyline from within the park. Nairobi National Park is one of the greatest and easiest places in the world to go on a single-day safari since, while being uncommon, it is feasible to see the Big Five there.

Amboseli National Park .

With over 400 bird species, baboons, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, and antelope in addition to its massive elephant herds, Amboseli National Park is a wonderful spot to fit in a lot of game viewing in a single day. Located on the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, it’s a great safari activity to add on before or after your mountain trek. It would be unrealistic to do a one-day safari from Nairobi to Amboseli, which is about 4-5 hours away. Kilimanjaro can be a shy mountain, so you might want to give yourself a few days if you want to get that amazing picture of an elephant or giraffe in front of the summit.

A Magical Kenya Itinerary – Safaris, Cities & Beaches

1 day safari in kenya

Kenya is an incredible and diverse country, perfect for an introduction to African travel.

Kenya is one of those countries that really has it all – great safaris, excellent beaches, mountains, traditional culture and modern cities.

Kenya Itinerary Map

Here’s a little visual guide to the places I mention above.

Group Tour Masai Mara Kenya

How to Get Around Kenya

One thing you need to consider when planning your Kenya itinerary is how you will get around.

Kenya is a relatively easy country to travel by public transport. There are good coaches between major cities, smaller minibuses known as matatus that go everywhere and even an excellent train network between Nairobi and Mombasa. There are also lots of taxis and in Nairobi, Uber is a popular way to get around.

However, if you are short on time, sometimes taking a Kenya group tour is a good option, saving you time (most importantly) and sometimes money, and you won’t waste precious time on your Kenya holiday trying to find groups to join.

I would try to avoid travelling by matatu for long journeys as they are not known for being the safest or most comfortable method of transport.

If you are heading up towards Lake Turkana, check the safety situation on the ground as you may need an armed escort to travel and between Malindi and Lamu, it is advisable to fly.

Shimba Hills, Kenya - Helen in Wonderlust

When To Visit Kenya

Kenya is best visited during the dry season from June to October. I would avoid the rainy season from mid-March to May. January and February can also be quite nice, although pretty hot in places.

If you’re hoping to see the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, July to September/October is usually the best time although sometimes the herds have arrived earlier, in June.

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

How Long To Spend in Kenya

On this Kenya itinerary, you’ll find a ton of different places to visit, as well as lots of things to do. Kenya has it all!

Kenya is a big country and it would be impossible to see it all in a one or two-week trip. But, in a couple of weeks, you can definitely get a good feel for the country.

Under each location, I’ve suggested the minimum amount of time I recommend you spend there. The full itinerary below would take around a month, but if you’re on a shorter trip, you can just miss certain places out.

For instance, Kenya is very safari heavy, so you could easily just pick 1 or 2 Kenya safari destinations and then spend the rest of your time soaking up the atmosphere in Nairobi or on the coast, near Mombasa.

Wildebeest Migration - Kenya & Tanzania

Combining Kenya & Tanzania

People often ask me which is better – Kenya or Tanzania ? They can easily be combined in one trip, but again, these countries are huge, so you won’t be able to see everything in 2 weeks, but you’ll still be able to have an incredible trip either way.

My Kenya & Tanzania Adventure tour takes in the major highlights of both countries – so definitely consider that if you want to maximise your time and let someone else (me) sort out the logistics for you!

For further ideas, check out my suggested Kenya & Tanzania itinerary and my Tanzania itinerary .

The Nairobi Giraffe Centre - Helen in Wonderlust

Detailed Kenya Itinerary

Nairobi may seem a bit intimidating for a first-timer to Africa, but it’s actually a great city. The first time I visited I wasn’t that impressed as it just seemed crowded, busy and congested.

But I’ve been back many times since then and now it feels like home. It’s still crowded and hectic, but it is also vibrant, exciting and full of adventure, I just didn’t see it the first time around.

Nairobi is the perfect place to begin or end your Kenya trip and you can either head straight out of Nairobi and come back later or spend a few days there first before you go on safari.

How Many Days to Spend in Nairobi

1 – 2 days. You could spend a night in Nairobi and then head straight out to other parts of the country, but there are lots of cool things to do in Nairobi too if you have time.

Things To Do in Nairobi

  • Visit the Nairobi Giraffe Centre (they’re the same giraffes at Giraffe Manor).
  • See the baby elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
  • Learn about Kenya’s tribes at Bomas of Kenya.
  • Visit the Maasai markets.
  • Go on safari in Nairobi National Park.
  • Do a walking tour of the city.

Where to Stay in Nairobi

  • Wildebeest Eco Camp : I often stay at Wildebeest Eco Camp which is a great place for groups and families. They have dorm tents too so perfect for solo travellers.
  • After 40 : If you want to stay in the city centre, try After 40 for a mid-range option.
  • Villa Rosa Kempinski : To treat yourself, stay in Villa Rosa Kempinski in the city centre.

Umoja Women's Village in Samburu Kenya

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve lies around 300km north of Nairobi on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Believe it or not, Samburu Reserve in Kenya was the first safari I ever went on back in 2009. I cried when I saw an elephant in the wild for the first time. It was such a special moment in my life.

I also visited Umoja Women’s Village, an initiative set up by a lady called Rebecca Lolosoli. The project was set up to help women and girls from the Samburu tribe who are the victims of violence from their husbands or forced into marriage with older men from a very young age.

If you don’t fancy the drive, you can fly up to Samburu from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

How Many Days to Spend in Samburu National Reserve

2 – 3 Days. As it’s a bit of a drive from Nairobi, I would recommend spending at least 2 – 3 nights there. It’s also a great place to stop if you are exploring Northern Kenya . and can easily be combined with a safari to Ol Pejeta Conservancy too.

Things To Do in Samburu National Reserve

  • Go on safari in Samburu National Reserve or Buffalo Springs National Reserve on the other side of the river. The daily park fee covers you for both places. You can see my guide to Samburu National Reserve here .
  • Visit the Umoja Women’s Village  (see a Youtube video about the village here ). It costs 1000 KES per person to visit for the day.

Where to Stay in Samburu National Reserve

  • Umoja Women’s Village: For a truly local experience, you can stay at the Umoja Women’s Village.
  • Sabache Camp : Alternatively, I’d recommend Sabache Camp, a good mid-range option.
  • Elephant Bedroom Camp : For a more high-end stay, have a look at the wonderful Elephant Bedroom Camp.

Lake Turkana, Northern Kenya

Lake Turkana

Remote Lake Turkana, also known as the ‘Jade Sea’, doesn’t find itself on many Kenya itineraries, but it can be an amazing adventure for the intrepid traveller, especially if you venture up there during the Lake Turkana Festival which takes place in June (usually – they have been known to move it).

The Lake Turkana Cultural Festival was created to help relations between the different tribes who live within the region and promote ‘cross-cultural interaction, harmony, cohesion, integration, cooperation and trading’.

At the festival, you will have the opportunity to observe and interact with people from around 14 remote Kenyan tribal groups, including the El Molo, Randille, Samburu and Turkana as well as learn about their way of life.

This is definitely something special if you can squeeze it into your Kenya itinerary. Just keep an eye on the safety warnings around the region and seek local advice before you drive up there.

How Many Days to Spend in Lake Turkana

5 – 7 days. The festival lasts for 3 days and it will probably take you a good couple of days to get up there and a couple of days to back down (even without stops), so allow a week altogether, unless you fly. Samburu, Mount Kenya or Ol Pejeta are good places to stop en route.

Things To Do in Lake Turkana

  • See the Teleki Volcano.
  • Go fishing on the lake.
  • Visit some prehistoric sites.
  • Take a boat ride on the lake.
  • Go bird watching.
  • Visit a local tribe.
  • Take part in the Lake Turkana Festival.

Where to Stay in Lake Turkana

  • Camping by Lake Turkana: The festival takes place in Loiyangalani. If you’re on a budget, camping is usually the best option – there is very little infrastructure so it is best to be self-sufficient.
  • Malabo Resort : Don’t fancy camping try Malabo Resort.
  • Eliye Springs Resort : On the other side of the lake, the most reliable option is Eliye Springs Resort.

Sunrise over Mount Kenya as seen from Ol Pejeta Conservancy with an elephant in the foreground

Mount Kenya National Park

Near to the Samburu National Reserve lies Mount Kenya, Kenya’s highest mountain at 5,199 metres – in fact, it’s the second-highest mountain in Africa.

Reaching the summit requires technical climbing, so most trekkers head to the 3rd highest peak, Point Lenana which usually takes between 4 and 6 days. Shorter treks are also available. Most trekkers start from the town of Naro Moru.

If you’re feeling less energetic you can take a helicopter ride over the summit. Flights usually depart from Nanyuki.

How Many Days to Spend in Mount Kenya National Park

4 – 6 days if climbing the mountain. More if you want to stay somewhere close the night before and after your trek or want to visit some of the other nearby areas, less if you are just passing through and doing a day hike.

Things To Do in Mount Kenya National Park

  • Hike or climb Mount Kenya.
  • Take a helicopter ride over the summit.
  • Visit the Ngare Ndare waterfall.
  • Visit nearby Meru National Park.
  • Visit the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
  • Visit Aberdare National Park.

Where to Stay in Mount Kenya National Park

  • Noro Moru River Lodge : Some treks offer transfers from Nairobi but if you want to stay closer, try the Noro Moru River Lodge.

Najin & Fatu Ol Pejeta - Kenya

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta is one of my favourite places in Kenya . This privately-owned wildlife conservancy to the west of Mount Kenya National Park houses the largest population of the endangered black rhino in East Africa so sightings are pretty much guaranteed.

There are so many great things to do in Ol Pejeta and it’s perfect for families. You can even go horse riding through the reserve, allowing you to get close to the animals without scaring them, that includes the rhinos.

The great thing about this conservancy is that you don’t have to be staying there to visit. You can just pay to visit for the day. One of the main highlights is the waterhole at Sweetwaters Serena Camp where you will often see rhinos coming to drink.

How Many Days to Spend in Ol Pejeta

1 – 2 days at the minimum. But I reckon you could easily spend longer! Plan your stay around the activities you want to do. You can read more about planning your trip in my Ol Pejeta travel guide .

Where to Stay in Ol Pejeta

  • Ol Pejeta Campsites : There are a number of campsites available inside the park.
  • Sweetwaters Serena Camp : Part of the Serena portfolio, Sweetwaters Serena Camp is an excellent choice.
  • Olepangi Farm : For a luxurious stay, I would suggest the Olepangi Farm which is just outside the park.

Things To Do in Ol Pejeta Conservancy

  • Go horse riding to see Fatu & Najin the last two Northern White Rhinos.
  • Visit Baraka, the blind black rhino.
  • Join the K9 dog tracking team.
  • Go on a lion tracking game drive.
  • Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Giraffe in Masai Mara, Kenya - Helen in Wonderlust

Lake Naivasha & Hell’s Gate National Park

The next stop on this Kenya itinerary is around Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park.

On the way, you could stop at Thomson Falls , which lies between Ol Pejeta and Lake Naivasha, either for a picnic stop or an overnight stay if coming from further away.

Naivasha town lies close to Lake Naivasha. Nearby you’ll find the wonderful Hell’s Gate National Park, said to be the inspiration for the Lion King due to its dramatic landscape. What’s also special about Hell’s Gate, is that you can take cycling safaris allowing you to get a completely different safari perspective.

Naivasha is also close to the extinct Mount Longonot which can be climbed in a few hours and offers great views over Lake Naivasha, as well as Elsamere, home of Joy Adamson, the writer of Born Free.

How Many Days to Spend in Naivasha & Hell’s Gate National Park

2 – 3 days. If you were in a rush, 1 night could be ok if you’re not travelling to or from too far.

Where to Stay in Naivasha & Hell’s Gate National Park

  • Camp Carnellys : The most popular budget option is Camp Carnellys.
  • Elsamere Lodge : This is the lodge on the site of Elsamere, of Born Free fame, where Joy Adamson lived.
  • Enashaipai Resort & Spa : The name of this lodge means ‘state of happiness’ in the Maasai language.

Things To Do in Naivasha & Hell’s Gate National Park

  • Go cycling or do a safari at Hell’s Gate National Park.
  • Take a dip in the Ol Karia Geothermal spa.
  • See the flamingos at Lake Oloiden.
  • Take a boat out on Lake Naivasha.
  • Go walking on Crescent Island .
  • Visit Elsamere.
  • Climb Mount Longonot.

Lake Nakuru National Park

At one time, I would have definitely said to go to Lake Nakuru, which used to be famous for its flamingos, however, rising water levels have forced the flamingos to move to Lake Bogoria (around 4 hours north) and pollution from the nearby town has also had a negative effect – it’s very sad.

Saying that it’s still a good place to see rhinos, there are a couple of wonderful viewpoints and it’s a good stopover between the Mara and Ol Pejeta – but I probably wouldn’t include it as a main destination on your Kenya itinerary. Read more here .

How Many Days to Spend in Lake Nakuru National Park

1 day, for the reasons I mentioned above.

Things To Do in Lake Nakuru National Park

  • Go on safari to see the white rhinos.
  • Visit Baboon Cliff Viewpoint.

Where to Stay in Lake Nakuru National Park

  • Lake Nakuru Lodge : This is a great mid-range option in the park.

Lion eating a giraffe in the Masai Mara

Masai Mara National Reserve

The next stop on our Kenya itinerary is the incredible Masai Mara, home to the ‘Big Five’ and arguably the most famous safari destination in the world.

As well as game drives through the park, you can take a balloon ride to see it all from above (with a champagne breakfast at the end), which is especially cool if you time it when the Great Migration is passing through ”“ this varies slightly from year to year, but usually happens around July, August & September.

If you want an amazing and varied Masai Mara safari, I’d definitely recommend coming along on my Rock My Kenya & Tanzania Adventure . It’s a really special and awesome trip (if I do say so myself)!

How Many Days to Spend in the Masai Mara National Reserve

3 – 4 days. It takes at least half a day to get to and from the Masai Mara by road (from Nairobi), so I would suggest spending at least 3 nights here. You can save a bit of time by flying into Keekorok Airstrip and I believe they are considering making this an international airport – watch this space.

Things To Do in the Masai Mara National Reserve

  • Go on a Masai Mara safari.
  • See the wildebeest & zabra migration (usually July – October).
  • Spend time with the Maasai people.
  • Go hot-air ballooning.
  • Go on a horse riding safari.
  • Visit the Sekenani township.

Where to Stay in the Masai Mara National Reserve

  • Kobi Farm : My favourite place to stay is Kobi Farm, run by my friends who used to own Mara Explorers Camp.
  • Governor’s Camp : Beautiful tented camp in the heart of the Mara.
  • Mara Explorer Camp : Beautiful luxury camp, not to be confused with the old Mara Explorers Camp.
  • Angama Mara : One of the best, Angama Mara is the place to go if you’re looking for somewhere really special with an ‘Out of Africa’ romantic vibe.

Amboseli National Park, Kenya - Helen in Wonderlust

Amboseli National Park

When planning your Kenya itinerary, you should definitely consider Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya’s most iconic yet not that widely known travel destinations.

Amboseli is special for a couple of reasons, firstly for having one of the densest elephant populations in the world, and secondly for the fact that it lies at the base of Kilimanjaro, which provides an incredible backdrop for all of your photos. Simply magical!

Unless you fly between the Mara and Amboseli, you’ll probably need to stop over in Nairobi, otherwise, it would be a very long travel day.

Alternatively, you could also visit Tsavo National Park which is a little bit further on towards Mombasa.

How Many Days to Spend in Amboseli National Park

1 – 2 days. Allow yourself at least 1 full day to really enjoy your safari. Just be aware that the weather can affect the view of Kilimanjaro, so the longer you spend here, the more chance you will have for good views.

Things To Do in Amboseli National Park

  • Spot elephants and other animals on safari.
  • Admire Kilimanjaro.
  • Visit the Maasai people.

Where to Stay in Amboseli National Park

  • Kibo Safari Camp : My favourite place to stay in Amboseli is Kibo Safari Camp which has great views of Kili from the rooms.
  • Amboseli Eco Camp : If you’re a fan of eco-camps, you might like to stay here.

Samburu National Reserve Kenya

Tsavo National Park

I first read about Tsavo National Park in one of my favourite books, Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story by Daphne Sheldrick, founder of The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Tsavo is famous for having lots and lots of elephants and is split into two sections, Tsavo West and Tsavo East.

How Many Days to Spend in Tsavo National Park

2 – 3 days. You could spend more if you hadn’t been on too many other safaris during your trip.

Mombasa Old Town - Helen in Wonderlust

Mombasa is a fantastic coastal city, with a very different feel to Nairobi. Whereas Nairobi is a very cosmopolitan, Mombasa has a distinct old-world, meets new-world Swahili flavour.

Mombasa is steeped in history, being one of the oldest and busiest ports on the African continent and is a great place to immerse yourself in Swahili culture.

Take a tour of the city and enjoy some of the great restaurants and bars too.

If you don’t go through Amboseli or Tsavo, you can easily get the train from Nairobi to Mombasa. Alternatively, you can also jump on the train at various different towns, including Voi, near to Tsavo National park. Booking in advance is advisable as the train almost always books up.

How Many Days to Spend in Mombasa

1 – 2 days. Mombasa is a great and important historical city, however, it’s not my favourite place in Kenya so a day or two is enough for me.

Things To Do in Mombasa

  • Take a city tour.
  • See the Mombasa tusks.
  • Visit Uhuru Park.
  • Explore the spice markets.
  • Visit Fort Jesus and the Old Town.
  • Shop for souvenirs.
  • Visit Haller Park and visit the Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary.

Where to Stay in Mombasa

  • Tulia House : The main backpacker hangout in Mombasa is Tulia House. The bathrooms aren’t great, and the rooms are ok, but they have a pool and sociable bar, great for meeting new friends.
  • Best Western Plus Creekside : If you want somewhere reasonably priced, with nice views and close to town, check out this place.

Diani Beach - Kenya

Diani Beach

You can end your Kenya holiday in Diani, one of those picture-perfect locations, known for beautiful blue seas and white, sandy beaches. Diani is a popular honeymoon spot, as well as a backpacker favourite, so it’s a great place to add to your Kenya itinerary.

Whether you’re looking to relax, get adventurous or party – there’s something for everyone.

The trade winds make Diani a popular spot for kite surfing and it’s also one of the best places for sky diving in Africa.

At night, the backpackers tend to gather at Forty Thieves (although I believe it’s closed at the moment) which is always fun, especially on the weekend.

How Many Days to Spend in Diani Beach

2 – 3 days. Diani Beach is a great place to relax!

Things To Do in Diani Beach

  • Go skydiving over the Swahili coast.
  • Explore Shimba Hills National Reserve.
  • Take a dhow trip to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park.
  • Relax on the beach and party the night away.

Where to Stay in Diani Beach

  • Stilts : Stilts is a backpacker place, set back from the beach in a jungle setting. It’s one of my favourites and you also get to use the facilities at their sister hotel, Flamboyant.
  • Flamboyant : Owned by the same people as Stilts, for mid-range, try Flamboyant is a nice choice, with a pool and lying directly on the beach.
  • AfroChic : For a more luxurious stay, check out AfroChic, part of the Elewana Collection.
  • Diani Villa : If you have a big group, I would suggest Diani Villa.

Kilifi Creek - Helen in Wonderlust

Kilifi, a town north of Mombasa, is one of my favourite places in Kenya.

I think a lot of this has to do with the incredible backpackers there, which is called Distant Relatives. It is truly is backpacker’s paradise and I’ve known many a person to go there for a couple of days and leave weeks, even months later.

The friendly, laid back-vibe tends to attract a lot of cool people including locals, independent travellers, so there’s always something going on and someone to hang out with.

You can spend your time relaxing in a hammock, swimming in the creek or the pool or taking a day trip out somewhere. There are lots of things to do in Kilifi.

Again, you could stay in Kilifi and easily explore Watamu and Malindi from there, but I guess your Kenya itinerary will depend on how much time you have – but the options are there!

How Many Days to Spend in Kilifi

How long is a piece of string? On a serious note, at least 2 full days.

Things To Do in Kilifi

  • See the bioluminescence in the waters of Kilifi Creek.
  • Relax on the white sands of Bofa Beach.
  • Sail on a traditional dhow boat.
  • Visit Vuma Cliffs.
  • Go snorkelling or scuba diving.
  • Take a village tour.

Where to Stay in Kilifi

  • Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers : I love Distant Relatives. It’s one of those places that people either really love or they don’t and lots of people get ‘stuck’ there. It’s got a strong hippy/eco/permaculture vibe if you’re into that!

Kilifi

Watamu & Malindi

North of Kilifi, you’ll find Watamu and Malindi, two beautiful beach towns and popular Kenya holiday destinations, both with plenty of activities, hotels and restaurants to keep you busy for a good few days, if not longer.

I’m putting these two together because they are so close to each other (approx 30 mins) – so you could stay in one place and enjoy both. Kilifi is also nearby, but Kilifi holds a special place in my heart, so Kilifi gets a section of its own.

You can fly to Malindi from Lamu or Nairobi, or you can get a local minibus (matatu) from Mombasa.

How Many Days to Spend in Watamu & Malindi

2 days + (more if you can) – is there such a thing as too much beach time?

Things To Do in Watumu & Malindi

  • Visit Arabuko Sokoke Forest.
  • Go scuba diving or snorkelling at Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve.
  • Explore the Gedi Ruins.
  • Relax on Golden Beach.
  • Hang out at Osteria Beach Restaurant.
  • Visit the Marafa Depression.
  • Do some watersports (SUP, surfing, kite surfing).

Where to Stay in Watamu & Malindi

  • White Elephant Sea Lodge : Beach lodge in Malindi.
  • Kobe Suite : Mid-range beach resort in Watamu.

Lamu - Kenya

Lamu, in northern Kenya, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and possibly the best place in the world to experience the traditional Swahili culture – even more so than Mombasa or Stone Town in Zanzibar .

Visitors to this sleepy island often spend much longer here than they intend to, sucked in by the laidback way of life. Spend your days getting lost in the alleyways, relaxing on the beaches and immersing yourself in this intoxicating place.

I absolutely love Lamu and wrote a whole Lamu travel guide to help you plan your own trip.

The road to Lamu is not known for being very safe, so it is advisable to fly. You can catch a flight from Nairobi, Mombasa or Malindi. Once you arrive, it’s a short ferry ride to Lamu from Manda Island.

How Many Days to Spend in Lamu

3 days at least. I spent 4 nights there and that was great, but I could have stayed longer.

Things To Do in Lamu

  • Wander through Lamu town.
  • Visit the market, fort and the museum.
  • Take a trip on a dhow boat.
  • Go to a festival.
  • Go sunrise swimming and relax on Shela Beach.
  • Visit the donkey sanctuary.

Where to Stay in Lamu

  • Banana House & Wellness Centre : Check out this lovely Swahili house which also hosts retreats. This is where I stayed and I loved it!
  • Manda Bay : Manda Bay is a beautiful, boutique beach lodge.

I hope this helps you plan an amazing Kenya itinerary! Got any questions? Leave them in the comments below!

Your kenya safari experience starts here.

1 day safari in kenya

Kenya is the birthplace of the safari and an ideal safari destination. Bordering the Indian Ocean with Mount Kenya towering over a tapestry of tiny farms, green hills and golden savanna, the East African nation began drawing tourists over a century ago, enticed by tales of wild animals.

Kenya safaris highlight the country’s dramatic landscapes, which include a range of national parks and reserves, refuge to the “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo.)

Safaris remain one of the top travel experiences in the world where expert local guides and tailor-made tours are essential. At Natural World Kenya Safaris, a locally-owned tour operator, we are perfectly equipped to bring you a seamless Kenya safari tour. Our standard safari vehicle is a 4X4 Land Cruiser Jeep that seats six with long range radios for ease of communication and a pop-up top that makes photography a breeze.

Top Kenya Safari Experiences

Masai mara national reserve.

When you think of Africa, the picture in your mind’s eye is quite likely a single acacia tree silhouetted on the savanna against a flame red horizon, inching towards infinity. That classic image is almost certainly from the Masai Mara. One of Kenya’s most famous safari destinations, the Masai Mara is a 583 square mile area of preserved wilderness in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border made up of grassy plains and rolling hills, traversed by the Mara and Talek rivers. Its name derives from the Maasai people , ancestral inhabitants who migrated from the Nile Basin.

Other residents of the Mara, as it is called locally, include lion, cheetah, elephant, leopard, zebra, black rhino, hippo, and hundreds of bird species. Wildebeest, too, cross the Mara plains during the annual wildebeest migration in search of water in one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. It is a jaw-dropping sight and one you won’t soon forget.

Amboseli National Park, the second most visited park in Kenya after the Masai Mara, is known for its spectacular herds of elephants and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, just across the border in Tanzania. Large herds of tusked elephants roam the plains in the morning and evening, but you will also see hippo, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and the occasional lion and wild dog.

During the heavy rains, the basin at the center of Amboseli floods, luring throngs of wildlife and providing ample opportunity for eager shutterbugs. Amboseli was declared a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve in 1991, helping ensure the conservation of biodiversity within the park and the involvement of the local population.

Kenya’s largest national park by far, the 4,535 square-mile Tsavo East is characterized by flat, dry terrain dotted with huge baobab trees, which lends itself well to spotting the Big Five. All safaris in Tsavo East take place south of the Galana River, an area so vast that you’ll often find you and your fellow safari-goers completely alone. The Voi and Galana rivers traverse the park and the Aruba Dam, built across the Voi River, lures scores of birds.

Another interesting feature of the park is the 180-mile long Yatta Plateau, one of the world’s longest lava flows that runs parallel to Mombasa Highway. The sheer number of game in this park make it a top attraction. In addition to the more popular species, you’ll have the opportunity to view rarer animals such as the oryx, the lesser kudu, and the klipspringer, a tiny African antelope which hops from rock to rock.

In the far north of the country, near Mount Kenya, you’ll find the remote Samburu National Reserve. Samburu is uncrowded and offers excellent game-viewing amidst a stunning mix of hilly landscapes, riverine bush, and semi-desert terrain. Here, you won’t be surrounded by other vehicles as you might in other reserves, but you will be privy to kopjes (small hills) and enormous rocky outcrops centered around the Ewaso Ngiro River. This unique geography supports animals adapted to the drier, rockier conditions.

You might even glimpse the red-robed Samburu tribesmen, like their Masai relatives, bringing cattle to the river to drink. The Samburu live in manyattas (villages) that can be moved as they follow the grazing patterns of their livestock. This is also one of few places in Africa where you might spot a camel plodding along the arid plains.

Lake Naivasha and surroundings

A freshwater lake about an hour and a half north of Nairobi, Lake Naivasha is known for its yellow-barked acacia trees, an abundance of hippo, and over 400 species of birds including pelican, flamingoes, heron, egret, and kingfisher. Skirted by grassy banks, the rich flora around this sparkling blue lake attracts giraffe, zebra, buffalo, antelope, warthog, and monkey who come here to graze. There’s more to Naivasha than just the lake, though. You can spot game around the lake or enjoy tea in the garden at Elsamere, the former home of Born Free author Joy Adamson.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Bordered by craggy escarpments, acacia woodlands and waterfalls, Lake Nakuru National Park is known for the abundance of flamingoes who reside in and near this Rift Valley Lake, often covering the lake in such a way that it appears as one giant pink mass. The park is stunning year-round and is home to black and white rhino, lion, leopard, hippo, and the eye-catching, endangered Rothschild giraffe. The southern end of the lake itself is one of the best spots for viewing wildlife as lion and leopard will often sleep in the trees in the forest below Flamingo Hill.

One of Africa’s smallest national parks at just 45 square miles, Nairobi National Park is also one of the only national parks on the planet that sits within the limits of a capital city. But there is still the chance for numerous wildlife sightings. The park encompasses open plains, rocky outcrops, and streams that run southeast into the acacia lined Mbatathi Athi River. You can see the Big Five here, minus elephants. However, you can visit orphaned baby elephants in the nursery of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, located close to the main entrance to the park. There are as many as 40 black rhinos here, too. Fences separate the park from the nearby suburbs of Langata and Karen.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Set between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya in the Laikipia Plateau, Ol Pejeta comprises semi-arid grassland, woodland, riverine forest, and wetland beside the scenic Ewaso Nyiro River. It is one of the most esteemed wildlife conservancies in East Africa with all the Big Five Present. It is most famous for employing highly trained rhino protection squads and a team of international veterinary experts to keep diligent watch over two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino and over 140 critically endangered black rhino. Also present here is Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary which houses orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees.

Mount Kenya National Park

Mount Kenya National Park covers 277 square miles, including much of the lower skirts of Mount Kenya, which is the second highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. The park is home to elephant, buffalo, black rhino, and leopard. Several endangered and rare species including sunni buck and albino zebra also live there, and, at lower altitudes, colobus monkeys can also be seen. In 1997, the park and forest reserve around it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kikuyu peoples and the related Meru and Embu tribes farm the lower slopes of Mount Kenya.

Meru National Park

Meru National Park is located about 200 miles from Nairobi, east of the town of Meru, Kenya. The 340 square mile park shelters elephant, leopard, cheetah, eastern black rhino, southern white rhino, Grevy’s zebra, and hippo, among other species. From the late 1980’s until 2000, the park was destroyed by poachers and well into ruin, however, from 2000 to 2005 The Kenya Wildlife Service with the help of a few aid agencies restored the park. It is now one of the most promising parks in East Africa and an excellent one to visit for more serious safari-goers who prefer parks with fewer vehicles. Elsa the Lioness of Born Free fame is buried in Meru, and you can visit her gravesite.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge

Kenya Safaris FAQs

What are the best places to visit in kenya.

Kenya offers world-class wildlife viewing in game reserves such as the Masai Mara National Reserve, which has the country’s highest concentrations of lions, wildebeest and elephants. Known for its elephant population, Amboseli National Park also shelters giraffe, zebra and cheetah. while private conservancies like Oj Pejeta provide unique experiences such as nighttime game drives.

What are the Big Five in Africa?

“Big Five” refers to the five African animals on the must-see list of every safari goer in Africa and includes the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. The Big Five aren’t just Africa’s most successful predators or largest animals, but rather the continent’s five most difficult animals to track.

Do I need a visa to visit Kenya?

Yes, an Electronic Tourist Visa (eVisa) is required for U.S. and Canadian passport holders.

Is there internet access at the lodges and camps?

While internet access is available in many hotels in Nairobi, there are no “business centers” at bush lodgings in the Kenyan bush. It is rare to find a camp or lodge offering a computer for guest use while on safari. While intermittent internet access might be available at certain times, it is impossible to predict so it’s best to assume you will not have reliable internet access while out on safari.

Are Kenya safari packages expensive?

Costs vary depending on whether you want a private safari or group safari. A no-frills safari with basic accommodations starts at $220 per person, per day. A mid-range safari with lodging costs $350 to $400 per person, per day while luxury safari and accommodation ranges from $600 to $1,000 per person, per day. Natural World Safaris can accommodate almost any budget. Read more about how much a safari costs in Kenya .

East Africa FAQs

This depends where in East Africa you want to go. The dry season, which takes place from June-October, is the best time for game viewing. If you've got your heart set on seeing the Great Migration, then you must go sometime from July - September. The rains, on the other hand, bring with them other delights, such as newborns and lush greenery, so this can also be an excellent time for a safari.

The cost of an East African safari depends largely on whether you want a private safari or group safari. A basic safari with no-frills lodging starts at $220 per person, per day. A middle-of-the-road safari with accommodation runs about $350 to $400 per person, per day while a high end safari and accommodation with all the bells and whistles ranges from $600 to $1,000 per person, per day. Natural World Safaris can accommodate any of these safaris - and everything in between.

Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan are the seven countries in East Africa.

Yes! East Africa is known for its large concentration of wildlife and stunning scenery. The two tallest peaks on the continent, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, are both located in East Africa, as well as Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater lake and Lake Tanganyika, the world's second deepest lake. Due to its temperate climate and abundance of wildlife, East Africa is widely regarded as an excellent year-round safari destination. Its sprawling, open savannah means there is almost always game to view, no matter what time of year you visit.

By Author Ella McKendrick

Posted on Last updated: 1 July 2024

Kenya is one of the most popular destinations for an Africa safari. And, after spending almost a month going on safari in different parks across Kenya, I can see why!

Kenya is a diverse country in terms of wildlife, culture and landscapes. From the vast plains of the Masai Mara (perfect big cat territory!) to breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli (a park renowned for its elephant population), there really is something for every safari enthusiast.

In this guide, I’m going to dive into the ultimate 7-10 day Kenya safari itinerary . My goal is to provide you with everything you need to know, including costs, how to find the perfect tour operator and more, so that you can plan the safari of a lifetime!

Male lion in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Kenya is a great place for first-time safari-goers for a number of reasons.

First of all, Kenya is home to one of the largest international airports in Africa, meaning access to the country is easy and doesn’t involve excessive flights. For example, you can fly directly from London and Amsterdam.

Secondly, Kenya is home to some of the best wildlife reserves in the world. It houses the famous Masai Mara which features in countless wildlife documentaries and in the summer is the backdrop to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth – the crossing of millions of wildebeest across the crocodile-infested Mara River.

Additionally, journeying between the different parks and reserves is relatively easy. The distance between them isn’t too great (for example, Tsavo West is just a couple of hours from Amboseli) and if driving for several hours between parks doesn’t sound appealing, all parks are linked up via airstrips.

In terms of wildlife, Kenya has it all. Across its national parks you can find all of the Big Five (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalos) as well as a myriad of other wonderful creatures.

Baby giraffe in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya

Without a doubt the most popular and easiest way to go on safari in Kenya is to book your trip with a local tour operator. This is how I booked my Kenya safari and I was extremely happy. These types of trips are extremely convenient as your tour operator will take care of everything, from booking hotels and permits to giving you up-to-date recommendations on the best places to visit based on recent wildlife sightings.

You can get quotes from the same local tour companies I use to organise my own trips here:  Safaris By Ella

Other types of safari are available, including self-drive safaris and fly-in to hotel safaris, where you fly from lodge to lodge and each lodge offers game drives. And of course there are package holidays, where an international travel agent takes care of everything, including international flights.

The option you choose will have a large impact on the price of your safari as well as the experience itself. Below I will provide you with the pros and cons of each option.

Ella McKendrick on Safari in the Masai Mara, Kenya

Option 1: Self-Drive Safari

This option is popular with budget travellers as the perceived costs involved are less than booking through a tour operator.

In reality, however, the cost savings are minimal as you still have to pay for national park permits, hotels, food, car rental and fuel. You simply won’t have a knowledgeable driver guide with you.

For a self-drive safari you will need to organise everything yourself so doing ample research is essential.

Self-drive safaris come with the freedom of travelling in your own time and to your own schedule. However, many of the reserves in Kenya are quite challenging to drive. For example the Masai Mara has a sprawling road network which is extremely difficult to navigate. I’ve heard reports of many self-drivers getting lost in the Mara and needing other vehicles to help them find their way out.

Additionally, on a self-drive safari you cannot benefit from the radio system which safari guides use to alert other vehicles of wildlife sightings and therefore are less likely to have amazing sightings. You can, of course, follow other vehicles (like I did on my self-drive safari in Etosha, Namibia ) but this is a little bit of a gamble as the vehicle may be heading to lunch, the restroom or even leaving the park.

Personally, I don’t think a self-drive safari is worth it in Kenya. For countries in Southern Africa such as South Africa and Namibia , self-driving makes perfect sense as there are large cost savings involved and guides are not needed to navigate through the national parks. However, in Kenya, I think the negatives of self-driving outweigh the very minimal cost saving on not having a guide.

Option 2: Private Local Safari Tour Operator

My personal favourite option is to book with local safari tour operators.

Local operators will typically take care of everything apart from your international flights. This means they will book your hotels, arrange for all meals, pay for safari permits, provide the vehicle, driver guide and fuel for your safari. Personally I find that having so much taken care of makes the trip extremely relaxing.

What swayed me to booking with a local tour operator was the fact that the costs weren’t that much more to booking a safari yourself. For example, often the tour operators get special rates with hotels so you are paying the same amount for the hotels, but just having the hassle of booking it taken away. Additionally, hotels will keep rooms reserved for tour operator bookings so even if a hotel is showing as fully booked online, the tour operators may still be able to get you a room there. So, there’s a couple of additional benefits to booking through a tour operator.

Ella McKendrick on Safari in Amboseli National Park in Kenya

However, not all local tour operators are created equal.

At this point I have been on countless safaris with a range of different tour operators and the experience can vary greatly depending on which tour operator you go with.

The cheapest option isn’t always the best. In fact, in my personal experience, it rarely is. Accommodation options are a huge factor in the prices of safari programmes (cheaper programmes often have cheaper hotels) but the quality of other things can slip too. For example, cheaper companies often have less experienced driver guides and this can have a huge impact on the quality of your safari. Less experienced guides won’t be able to point out as much wildlife or take you to the places where wildlife is most likely to be.

It’s extremely important to always check online reviews of a safari tour company and pay particular attention to any negative ones they have.

I’d love to help you choose the perfect local tour operator. You can receive safari quotations from my favourite local tour operators who I have personally been on safari with and had an excellent experience with here on Safaris By Ella .

Recommended Booking Options For Your 7-10 Day Kenya Safari

Private Safari

Most popular & best experience – typical prices start from $300 per person per day .

Group (Shared) Camping Safari

Good for budget or solo travellers – from $160 per person per day.

My recommended Kenya tour operators only provide private safaris, however, I’ve listed the best group options for this itinerary, on Safari Bookings below.

10-Day Kenya Budget Group Safari

Option 3: Hotel Safaris

Many safari lodges offer their own safari experiences. This is a good choice if you want to be based in the same place for an extended period or if you want to fly from lodge to lodge.

Hotel safaris can often end up being more expensive than booking with local tour operators as they don’t come with transfers from other parks or cities. You will typically have to either arrange these yourself or book them with the hotel which comes at an additional cost. A popular option is flying between safari lodges and then having the lodge transfer you from the airstrip to the lodge which again often comes at an additional cost.

Another drawback of hotel safaris is these are not typically private safaris and you will have to share the safari vehicle with other hotel guests. This gives you less flexibility in terms of which sightings you go to, how long to spend at each sighting and how long to spend on safari as a whole.

Elephants in Amboseli National Park in Kenya

Option 4: Overseas Travel Agents

By far the most expensive way to book your safari is through an overseas tour operator. Overseas tour operators will typically sub-contract the actual safari to a local tour operator but pay a lot more for the safari as you have to cover the travel agent fees as well.

Apart from the fact that overseas travel agents can often book international flights, the end experience will be very similar to booking with a local tour operator.

This is a good option if budget isn’t a concern for you and you want your entire trip taken care of including international flights.

Overview: I’d personally always recommend booking with a local tour operator. In my opinion this option strikes the balance between giving you a rewarding experience and being good value.

You can get quotes from the local tour companies I use to organise my own trips here:  Safaris By Ella

Lioness in Amboseli National Park in Kenya

A typically private Kenyan safari costs from $300 per person per day. This includes hotels, park fees, all meals, transfers and all activities on your safari.

Shared group safaris cost slightly less. You can expect to pay around $150 per person per day for these. However, this will give you basic camping accommodation and the campsites are often poorly maintained with questionable facilities.

Below you can view a chart of typical safari costs based on your budget.

Please note that the costs above are for booking through a local operator. Prices will be considerably more expensive if you book through an overseas company or travel agent.

Kenya Safari Cost Breakdown

Kenya was once considered a budget-friendly safari destination in comparison to other countries such as Tanzania and Uganda. However, the park fees have recently risen in price and now a Kenyan safari is comparable in price to other countries in East Africa. For example, in peak season it now costs $200 per person per day to enter the Masai Mara for a single safari.

Park fees and hotels take up the bulk of your safari costs. If the Masai Mara costs $200 per person per day and the average hotel near the Masai Mara costs $100 per person per night, you can see how a safari to the best parks can easily exceed $300 per person per day. Remember, there’s still the vehicle, driver guide and fuel costs to be covered too!

Below I’ve included a chart which breaks down where the money goes for a safari of 2 people.

Local safari company cost breakdown for Tanzania and Kenya

Factors Affecting Kenya Safari Costs

There are a number of factors that can affect the cost of your safari. The most obvious factor is the level of accommodation that you select. A luxury safari will cost a lot more than a budget one. However, there are a couple of other factors to consider.

The size of your group can have a large impact on the total safari cost. Costs for a solo traveller will naturally be a lot more than for a couple. This is because fixed day costs such as the vehicle and driver guide cost can be split amongst a group whereas a solo traveller has to take the full cost. Based on this, the larger your group, the cheaper your safari.

Two zebra stallions battling for dominance in the Masai Mara

The vehicle that you select will also have an impact on your Kenya safari cost. There are typically two options for your safari: a minivan or a Toyota Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is more expensive than a minivan.

You can upgrade your vehicle further to a photography-ready Land Cruiser which has larger windows that open all the way so that you have even better views of the wildlife. Often these vehicles come with beanbags too to help you get the best photos.

The time of year that you visit can also have a large impact on your overall safari costs. Based on the new park fee pricing it is now substantially cheaper to visit Kenya between January and June. For example, a day safari in Masai Mara costs $100 per person at this time of year. Park fees are double for the second half of the year.

Best time to visit Kenya

Kenya can be visited throughout the year. There’s always something to see, no matter what the season! However, your experience and what you see will be greatly impacted by Kenya’s rains.

The universally-accepted best time to visit Kenya is during the long-dry season, between June and October. Days are warm (not too hot), sunny and dry.

If you’re keen to see the great wildebeest migration then mid-July to late-September is the best time to visit. The wildebeest are in the Serengeti in Tanzania at other times of the year so this is your only chance to catch a glimpse of the great herds.

Wildebeests crossing the Mara River in Serengeti as part of the itinerary

Mid-March to mid-May is often considered the worst time to visit Kenya. This is because this is the long rainy season. Days are wet and the heavy rainfall can make travelling challenging at this time of year. However, weather has been erratic in recent years meaning that sometimes the long rains never arrive at all which makes it as good a time as June to October to visit in terms of weather with the added bonus that the parks are quiet and you can benefit from cheaper safari rates.

Mid-October to mid-December is the short rainy season. This is classed as shoulder season although the park fees don’t reflect it. At this time of year the weather is generally pleasant. You can expect sunny days and light rain showers in the evening. However, things are changing. I visited Kenya during the short rainy season in 2023 and the rains were extremely heavy . It was worse than the long rainy season, they said. However, this didn’t have a negative impact on my experience and the rains actually turned the landscape a beautiful vibrant green. I also loved seeing so many baby animals (rains bring new life)!

A soggy female cheetah sitting in the rain in Amboseli

January to mid-March is the short dry season. This is arguably the best time of year to visit if you want to strike the right balance between having quieter parks and lower park fees vs having great weather. Low quantities of rain are to be expected at this time of year and you can still benefit from witnessing the beauty of a lush, green wilderness filled with baby animals.

Overview: June to mid-October is considered the best time to visit Kenya. You can still have a good experience at other times of year but may experience some rain.

In order to view the best of what Kenya has to offer, I’d recommend spending at least 7 days (one week) in Kenya.

If you want to get even more out of your time in Kenya then I’d recommend going for 10 days.

In this article, I am including itineraries for both options – one if you want to visit for a week and an extension of the itinerary, if you have enough time for 10 days.

When booking your trip with a local tour operator, they will take care of much of your trip. However, there are still a few things that you’ll need to consider and organise.

As of January 2024, you no longer need a visa to travel to Kenya. You do however need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA ) to visit. You’ll need to apply in advance of your trip. There are a couple of exemptions – you can find a full list here .

You can view up to date entry requirements based on your country below.

Vaccinations

You need to have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever to enter Kenya as Kenya has a risk of Yellow Fever. You’ll need to bring your yellow vaccination certificate with you to Kenya as proof of your vaccination.

There are other recommended vaccinations that you have before your trip. You can view a list of them here .

Kenya has a risk of malaria . Therefore it’s advised that you take anti-malarial medication for the duration of your stay in Kenya. I’d recommend talking to a medical professional about which medication is right for you.

Day by Day Breakdown of the Ultimate 7-10 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary

Total drive time: dependent on what activities you choose to do on this day

Your adventure starts in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and the gateway to the country’s natural parks. Most safari tour operators are based in this colourful city and will meet you at the airport.

Depending on what time your flight arrives, you can either spend the day exploring or get transferred to your accommodation.

About Nairobi

Nairobi is a vibrant, bustling city which is home to over 4 million people . The name comes from the Maasai phrase ‘Enkare Nairobi’ which means ‘place of cool waters’, a reminder that the city was built on a swamp.

Nairobi is one of the biggest cities in Africa which makes it extremely varied in its food scene and things to do.

The city has a reputation as being a little rough around the edges. However, if you apply common sense and don’t visit any unusual neighbourhoods, you should have a pleasant time in the city. I’ll go into more detail in my ‘tips for visiting Nairobi’ section below.

Where to Stay in Nairobi

When you book your safari with a local tour operator, often your hotel in Nairobi is included in your package. However, this isn’t always the case. Fortunately, Nairobi has a vast number of lovely accommodation options available which don’t break the bank.

I personally recommend Airbnbs in Nairobi. There are a number available, both within the centre and slightly out of town. My favourite area to stay is Karen in the south which is leafy and relaxed. There are a number of highly-rated properties here, including this one .

Things to do in Nairobi

There are a wide range of things to do in Nairobi! Below are some of my favourites.

1. Nairobi National Park

Situated just below the central business district is an area of pristine wilderness known as Nairobi National Park. I find it fascinating how a pocket of nature and a busy city centre can coexist side by side.

Nairobi National Park is the only national park that exists within a capital city . At 117 sq km in size, it’s one of Africa’s smallest parks which means it can easily be explored within one day.

In my opinion, Nairobi National Park is well worth a visit, if only to view wildlife in front of towering skyscrapers. It’s quite a contrast to animals and skyscrapers in one frame and is certainly thought-provoking.

Nairobi National Park has all the Big Five (elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards and buffalos) as well as giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and much more.

2. The Giraffe Centre

If you’re an avid Instagram user then you’ll have no doubt seen glamorous photographs and videos of Giraffe Manor, a fabulous luxury hotel where you can feed giraffes from your balcony. Well, did you know you can get a similar experience with the very same giraffes that visit Giraffe Manor for only a fraction of the price?

20 kilometres outside the centre of Nairobi is the Giraffe Centre, a sanctuary that supports the conservation of the rare Rothschild giraffe. It’s part of the same establishment as the world-famous Giraffe Manor.

I’m very sceptical recommending wildlife sanctuaries as often establishments claim they are sanctuaries but in reality are anything but and are purely in existence for human entertainment and profit.

However, the Giraffe Centre is a true sanctuary and has had a very positive impact on the population of Rothschild giraffes in Kenya, introducing a number of breeding pairs into various parks across the country, including Lake Nakuru National Park, Mwea National Reserve, Ruma National Park and Nasalot National Reserve.

It’s with the sanctuary’s help that the number of Rothschild giraffes have increased from 120 to over 300 individuals .

Not only does a visit to the Giraffe Centre support a worthwhile cause, but it’s really fun too!

Upon arrival you will be given a coconut shell full of pellets that the giraffes go wild for. You will then have the opportunity to feed these pellets to some of the sanctuary’s resident giraffes. Some of the giraffes are a little more polite than others when taking the pellets – be prepared for some giraffe slobber and watch out for Daisy the headbutting giraffe!

You only need to spend 1-2 hours at the Giraffe Centre. There is a nature trail on the other side of the road, should you wish to stay longer.

3. David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is another conservation initiative based in Nairobi that is doing genuinely good work for wildlife. The orphanage rescues baby elephants around Kenya who are often victims of poaching or human-wildlife conflict. The goal is to raise the elephants and then release them back into the wild. The sanctuary has a track record of releasing numerous elephants successfully back into the wild.

As well as helping elephants, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust also rescues black rhinos and giraffes. Additionally, the trust has helped to fund a lot of anti-poaching units across Kenya and has built permanent water sources in national parks for wildlife to help tackle droughts.

You can visit the elephant orphanage in Nairobi National Park and witness the daily feeding of the baby elephants. This takes place between 11am and 12pm each day and you can only visit if you book in advance. All information on how to book can be found on Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s website here .

As mentioned above, I never recommend sanctuaries that cause harm to animals. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust permits no contact with the animals and only allows one hour-long visit per day, limiting the impact on the animals in their care.

4. Dine in one of Nairobi’s Delicious Restaurants

Nairobi has a lot of fabulous restaurants for you to enjoy.

My absolute favourite is ‘Talisman Restaurant’ in Karan which is open for both lunch and dinner. It serves a range of Asian-inspired dishes including sushi (my favourite)!

A unique restaurant in Nairobi is ‘Carnivore Restaurant’ which is famous all over the world. The restaurant is all-you-can-eat and you wave a white flag on your table until you’re stuffed. Various kinds of meat (including crocodile and ox balls) are brought to you, served on Maasai swords. It’s certainly an experience but I’d only recommend it if you’re a big meat lover and have a massive appetite. I love meat but can never eat too much so it didn’t feel like good value for me as it’s a fixed price to eat here.

Other restaurant recommendations that I have are ‘The Wine Shop’ and ‘Wasp and Sprout’ , both in Loresho.

Tips for Visiting Nairobi

I absolutely loved my time in Nairobi! The city is extremely easy to get around. Ubers are reasonably priced and are everywhere and food can easily be ordered to your door on Uber Eats.

However, as with every large city, you should express some caution.

First of all, don’t walk around with any valuables on display. This is general advice that I would give for visiting any city. Most crimes are opportunistic so don’t give anyone an easy opportunity. I never travel with expensive jewellery and avoid walking down streets with my phone out. I’d recommend using a bum bag / fanny pack so you can safely store your phone and passport on you whilst you’re out.

Another important tip is to avoid being out at night. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, most crime happens at night and secondly, most car accidents happen at night. Therefore I recommend planning your days so that you don’t need to be out after dark.

There are neighbourhoods in Nairobi that should be avoided such as Eastleigh and Kibera. Taxi drivers and Ubers know which areas to avoid so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Additionally, I’d recommend Ubering to places rather than walking. Walking down the streets of Nairobi can become exhausting quite quickly as you’ll no doubt encounter a host of people trying to sell you tours, souvenirs and more. I’m someone who easily feels harassed so I opt instead to take Ubers where possible, even if it’s down a stretch which would equate to a 15 minute walk. Ubers are relatively inexpensive so to me it makes sense to utilise them in order to have a much more pleasant experience.

My Personal Experience in Nairobi

I’ll be honest, before I visited Nairobi, I was pretty nervous. Friends and family members who had never visited before warned me against staying in Nairobi, claiming it’s dangerous. But after staying in the city for a week, I can now see that their beliefs were based on a Nairobi of the past and the city has come a long way in recent years.

Yes, you have to be cautious when in Nairobi, like with any major city but I personally never felt unsafe there. Perhaps this is because I never put myself in a position where I could be unsafe as I didn’t go out after dark and I didn’t visit unusual neighbourhoods.

The security in Nairobi is extremely high. All of the Airbnbs that I stayed at had 24/7 security and all restaurants and shopping centres that I visited were secured behind gates. All of this made me feel safe.

I ventured into central Nairobi and walked from one of my Airbnbs to a local restaurant and I felt safe and comfortable for both of these activities. Everyone that I encountered was extremely friendly.

The food in Nairobi actually exceeded my expectations. There’s an abundance of restaurants which serve a range of different cuisines and I found the standard of food was high.

I was also impressed with how easy it is to get around Nairobi and to order deliveries. Uber Eats can even deliver your shopping to your door!

Overall, I had an extremely good experience in Nairobi and I’m keen to return again in future.

Baby topis at sunrise in the Masai Mara National Reserve

Driving time (excluding game drives): 6 hours

Today you will leave the bustling city of Nairobi and journey to my favourite spot in Kenya – the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve.

Half of your day will be spent driving to the Masai Mara. The rest of your day will be spent on a game drive within the beautiful reserve.

I’d highly recommend starting your day early (setting off at 7am or 8am) so that you have time for an afternoon game drive in the Masai Mara.

Now, the Masai Mara is a little far away from other safari destinations in Kenya, not conveniently on a loop like Tanzania’s safari destinations are, so it is a little bit of a detour from the rest of the itinerary to get here. But in my opinion it’s well worth making the effort to visit as it is Kenya’s flagship reserve.

It takes roughly 6 hours from Nairobi to reach the Talek Gate, one of a number of entrances into the main reserve. The Talek Gate is just outside the town of Talek which is where you will find most of the Masai Mara’s safari lodges.

The 6 hour driving time accounts for a stop-off at the Rift Valley Viewpoint around 1.5-2 hours into your journey and a second stop in Narok, the closest large town to the Masai Mara, around 3.5 hours into the drive.

If you set off at 7am or 8am then you should arrive at your lodge in time for a delicious lunch.

You can then spend the afternoon on a safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Mother cheetah, Nashipai, in the Masai Mara

About Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world. This sprawling expanse of grasslands is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the Big Five (lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalos).

The Masai Mara is perhaps most famous for hosting the annual wildebeest migration between mid-July and mid-September. Each year millions of wildebeest cross over from the Serengeti National Park, just south of the Masai Mara, into the Masai Mara, in search of fresh grazing. As part of their journey, they have to cross the mighty Mara River which is teeming with hungry crocodiles.

The Masai Mara is also well-known for its high density of predators. Lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas all live here in healthy numbers. In fact the Masai Mara is one of the best places in the world to see them.

The reserve is part of the wider Serengeti ecosystem which together make up one of the largest areas of natural wilderness in Africa. There are no boundaries at all surrounding the Masai Mara meaning that animals can freely move as they like.

Tips for Your Masai Mara Afternoon Game Drive

The prime times to go on safari are either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This is when it’s cooler and the animals are most active. You are however limited by the reserve’s opening times.

Today you are going on an afternoon safari so I’d recommend staying in the park right until it closes at 6pm. Not only do the evenings offer superior wildlife viewing opportunities, but the lighting is really beautiful at this time of day as well.

Tsetse flies are common in the Masai Mara so I’d recommend lathering yourself in insect repellent before your game drives. I also like to bring the repellent with me, just in case I need to top-up. Tsetse flies are attracted to dark coloured clothing (blacks and navy blues) so be sure to wear lighter colours such as whites, beiges or greens. Do avoid bright colours however.

Where to Spend the Night

The Talek region just outside the Masai Mara’s Talek gate houses a number of safari lodges and tented camps. This is a great place to spend the night as it’s just a short drive to the gate each day and there are a range of accommodation options available.

Another popular area to spend the night is near Ololaimutiek Village which is further south. This is also very close to one of the Masai Mara’s entrance gates. The driving time to get here is longer than it is to Talek so for that reason, I’d be inclined to recommend staying in Talek so that you have more time for a safari.

There are a couple of lodges located within the Masai Mara itself but they are typically more expensive and the park fees for staying within the park are higher.

Little Zebra River Camp is a favourite camp of mine which is located within Talek

My Personal Experience in the Masai Mara

I absolutely loved my time in the Masai Mara. The landscape itself is exceptionally beautiful, an endless plain except for the odd acacia tree. The density of wildlife however is what makes it one of the best places to go on safari.

Over my week in the Masai Mara I managed to see all of the Big Five as well as seven cheetahs, countless hyenas and much more. I saw more lions than I can count, many of which were on kills. Apart from the Serengeti, there’s nowhere else where I have seen so many predators.

A lioness from Notch Pride in the Masai Mara

Driving time (excluding game drives): 0 hours

Today you have a full day to go on safari and enjoy the magic of the Masai Mara!

Arguably the best time to go on safari is the early morning. Therefore you’ll want to ensure you wake up early so that you can go on safari as soon as the reserve’s gates open at 6am. This means you may have to wake up at 5am or 5:30am, depending on how far your lodge is from the gate.

Take a packed breakfast and lunch with you from the lodge so that you can eat these on your safari. The Masai Mara currently operates on pay per entry permits meaning if you were to go back to your lodge and eat for breakfast and lunch before going back on a game drive, you’d have to pay for your permits again.

You’ll then be able to enjoy a full-day game drive in the Masai Mara. If you have the stamina, I’d highly recommend staying until the park shuts at 6pm. This gives you maximum viewing time and, as wildlife doesn’t run on a schedule, gives you the most opportunities to witness some incredible sightings. The more time you spend on safari, the higher the chances of seeing something exciting.

After your safari, you’ll then return to your lodge for the evening.

Zebras grazing in the Masai Mara at sunrise

Tips for Your Full-Day Masai Mara Game Drive

The temperatures can vary quite dramatically throughout the day in East Africa so I’d recommend wearing multiple layers. Mornings can be chilly so it makes sense to wear jumpers and jackets. However, the middle of the day can in contrast become sweltering, so you’ll want to be able to strip down to a lightweight vest top or T-shirt.

Sunscreen and insect repellent are my two must-have items for every safari I go on. There’s a good chance you’ll need to top up on both at some point throughout the day so it’s essential to have them on hand. Even if it’s cloudy, you can still get sunburnt in Kenya so wear sunscreen every day.

As mentioned above, go on your game drive as early as possible. Big cats especially are active in the mornings so being out at this time gives you the best chance to spot them.

Don’t forget to let your guide know the day before that you plan on doing a full-day game drive and would like to eat breakfast and lunch on the safari. He will then arrange with your lodge for you to have a packed breakfast and lunch made for you and he’ll be ready and waiting to leave with you first thing in the morning.

Spend the night in the same lodge in the Masai Mara that you spent the previous night.

Leopard with a gazelle kill in the Masai Mara

Driving time (excluding game drives): 5 hours

This morning you will leave the Masai Mara and journey to Lake Naivasha, a large freshwater lake that’s teeming with life, including hippos and flamingos. It’s one of the best places in Kenya to enjoy a boat safari.

Alternatively, you can visit Hell’s Gate National Park for a cycling safari. The national park is right next door to Lake Naivasha.

Lake Naivasha Itinerary

This morning you’ll depart from your lodge in Masai Mara and journey to Lake Naivasha or Hell’s Gate National Park. The drive will take between 5 and 6 hours and involves journeying on a combination of bumpy dirt roads and tarred roads.

You will arrive in Lake Naivasha in time for some lunch at your lodge. Most lodges are located not far from the lake’s edge.

After lunch you will then get to see the beauty of Lake Naivasha from the comfort of a boat. Boating safaris give you a unique perspective of wildlife. You’ll also be able to marvel at Naivasha’s sizable population of over 1,500 hippos. The lake is also home to over 400 species of birds.

Your boat will stop on Crescent Island where you can then enjoy a walking safari. You can find a number of animals on this island, including zebras, gazelles, wildebeest and giraffes.

Yawning Hippo in Central Serengeti

About Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a large 139km² freshwater lake within East Africa’s Rift Valley. It’s in fact the Rift Valley’s highest lake , standing at 1884m above sea level. The name ‘Naivasha’ derives from the Maasai word for ‘rough water’ which refers to the fact that the area is frequented by storms.

The lake is one of the best places in Kenya to see hippos up-close and is also a haven for bird lovers, due to the vast array of species that can be seen here.

Hell’s Gate National Park Itinerary

Just below Lake Naivasha is Hell’s Gate National Park. The close proximity of the two attractions means that the start of this itinerary is the same as the Lake Naivasha one.

After having lunch at your lodge near Lake Naivasha, you will enter Hell’s Gate National Park and embark on a cycling safari.

On your tour you will have the chance to admire the park’s unique terrain and rock formations, evidence of the high levels of geothermal activity here. Additionally the park is home to a number of species of wildlife, including buffalos, zebras, elands, baboons and other species of antelope.

Unique landscape of Hell's Gate National Park

About Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate is a small national park (68.25 square kilometres) that’s renowned for its unique scenery which includes towering cliffs, rocky pinnacles, deep gorges and magnificent volcanoes. The park also houses an abundance of wildlife.

Hell’s Gate is one of the only national parks that allows walking and cycling safaris.

There are a number of lodges located on Lake Naivasha’s southern banks.

Elephant herd in Amboseli

Today you will journey to my favourite national park in Kenya (Masai Mara is a national reserve so I’m not contradicting myself here!) – Amboseli. Amboseli is famed for its huge herds of elephants and for having exceptional views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa.

By having a permanent year-round water source at its heart, Amboseli always has a plethora of wildlife for you to admire, no matter what the season. The star attractions here are Amboseli’s ‘big tuskers’, elephants with huge tusks that weigh over 50kg and touch the ground. Amboseli and neighbouring Tsavo West National Park are home to the last big tuskers in the world.

Today you have another relatively lengthy drive ahead of you. It takes roughly 6 hours to reach Amboseli from Lake Naivasha. The roads are mostly tarred and in good condition and you will have to pass by Nairobi on your way.

I’d recommend leaving Lake Naivasha at around 8am so that you can have lunch at your lodge in Amboseli at 2pm before heading out on an afternoon game drive in Amboseli.

Amboseli National Park’s gates close at 6pm so you have the time to have a 3 hour afternoon game drive.

This is in fact one of the best times of day to go on safari in Amboseli as it’s around this time that Amboseli’s huge elephant herds migrate from the swamp in the centre of the park to the forests below Kilimanjaro.

You’ll be able to witness hundreds of elephants crossing the road in front of you, a sight that is guaranteed to take your breath away. And, if conditions are just right, you’ll be able to see them walk in front of Mount Kilimanjaro and capture the perfect photograph.

Sadly, Kilimanjaro hid from me for the entirety of my recent 5 day safari in Amboseli but I did visit in the rainy season which likely impacted my opportunity.

You’ll return to your lodge for the evening at 6pm.

A mother elephant and her baby in Amboseli National Park

About Amboseli

The name Amboseli comes from the Maasai word ‘Empusel’ which means ‘salty dust place’. This description is especially true of Lake Amboseli in the dry season.

Amboseli is relatively small in comparison to the Masai Mara, measuring 392.06 km2 in size and can easily be explored within 24 hours. Lake Amboseli, in the heart of the park, makes up a good proportion of the park. In the dry season this lake runs dry and you can drive across it. However in the rainy season, the lake fills up and makes access to the west of the park limited.

Most wildlife sightings in Amboseli can be seen on the east of the park which is conveniently the side near most lodges.

Amboseli is home to some of the largest herds of African elephants in the world. The elephant population is so strong here because the area is inhabited by the Maasai tribe. The Maasai have a reputation for being fearsome warriors and their very presence has kept poachers away and thus conserved the elephant population.

You can expect to see a great deal of wildlife in Amboseli. Lions, buffalos, cheetahs, giraffes and hyenas can all be found here. However, rhinos and leopards are absent from the park so you cannot see all of the Big Five here.

Lion cub in Amboseli National Park

Tips for Visiting Amboseli

If you wish to catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro, visiting in Tanzania’s long dry season will give you the best chances as there should be less cloud cover. The long dry season runs between June and the end of September.

The best times to view Amboseli’s elephants is either in the morning (around 7am) or in the evening (around 5pm) as these are the times when the elephants journey to and from the swamps in the heart of Amboseli. In the middle of the day, the elephants relax in the swamp and sightings are not as good. It’s much better to see them when they are on the move.

Be sensible when around the elephants. Although they don’t mind the presence of vehicles, causing a lot of noise could disturb them.

Amboseli is one of the hottest national parks in Kenya so dress prepared for heat in the middle of the day. Also be sure to put on ample sunscreen.

There are three safari lodges located within Amboseli National Park. Staying within the park always allows you more time on safari as you don’t need to make the journey to the park gates.

However, in the case of Amboseli, most lodges outside the park are only a short distance from the gate. Additionally, the elephants cross the road to and from the swamp not far from Kimana Gate, so it’s probably a similar distance journeying here from all lodges, including those within the park.

When choosing a lodge outside the park, you’ll definitely want to stay in one near Kimana Gate which is on the east of the park. Most lodges are located here.

I stayed at Tulia Amboseli Camp and thoroughly enjoyed my stay there.

Ella McKendrick in plunge pool at Amboseli Tulia Camp

My Experience in Amboseli

Amboseli National Park exceeded my expectations. I was expecting elephants but I hadn’t quite contemplated the scale of the herds in Amboseli. Having seen elephants in quite a few locations now, including on safari in Tanzania , I thought I knew what to expect from elephant encounters. I was however wrong.

Amboseli has without a doubt provided me with my best elephant experience to date. The herds are huge and are made up of impressive individuals. Even the female elephants have longer tusks than I’m used to seeing. It’s also incredible how close to the vehicles they cross the road and the sheer quantity that cross at once is something to behold.

The only thing missing from my incredible elephant sightings was a view of Kilimanjaro in the background. A dark grey cloud stood behind the elephants and I knew that behind this was the mountain. Still, not seeing Kilimanjaro was a small price to pay for having such a beautiful experience.

Amboseli is not just elephants. I wasn’t expecting to have many big cat sightings as it’s not what the park is known for but I had some of my best cheetah sightings in this park.

I witnessed two males successfully chase and catch an impala shortly followed by a female swiftly take down a baby gazelle. After gulping down a hearty portion in a short space of time, she sadly lost her kill to a hyena. However she wasn’t done yet. I was amazed when she then chased an impala just metres away from our vehicle. She was unsuccessful this time, likely because she had an extremely full stomach which was slowing her down.

I also had some amazing lion sightings in Amboseli too, including of tiny cubs which must have only been a couple of weeks old, squabbling over their mother’s milk.

Can you tell that I love Amboseli?

Male cheetah on the hunt in Amboseli National Park

Today you will enjoy a full day in Amboseli. You’ll embark on a safari from 6am till 3pm and then you will have some time to relax at your lodge.

Today you will have another safari in Amboseli. Wake up early so that you can be at the gates to the park at 6am. This will give you enough time to venture into the park and be ready for the elephants as they cross into the swamp.

Early morning safaris also give you the best opportunity to spot predators such as lions and cheetahs.

After a morning on safari you will then stop at Observation Hill in the centre of the park where you can enjoy your picnic lunch with panoramic views over the park.

You will then continue your safari before exiting the park just before 3pm. Park passes are valid for a 24 hour period so, assuming you have a safari the previous day starting at 3pm, you will then need to leave before 3pm today.

You will then have some time to relax at your lodge.

You will spend another night in Amboseli.

Elephants in Amboseli National Park

Driving time for option 1 (excluding game drives): 5 hours

Driving time for option 2 (excluding game drives): 4 hours

If you are visiting Kenya for a 7 day safari then today you will leave Amboseli and journey back to Nairobi. The journey will take around 5 hours. You can then spend the afternoon either exploring or relaxing before your journey home.

If you are extending your itinerary into a 10 day safari, today you will be visiting Tsavo West National Park.

Itinerary option 1 (for 7 day Kenya safari)

This morning you will leave your lodge in Amboseli. The drive takes between 4 and 5 hours so I’d recommend leaving in the morning between 8am and 9am so that you can arrive in Nairobi at lunch time.

Enjoy some lunch in Nairobi and you then have the afternoon to do as you please. You may decide to do some more explorations of Nairobi (refer to my best things to do in Nairobi here) or simply relax before you fly home.

Itinerary option 2 (for 10 day Kenya safari)

This morning you will journey to Tsavo West National Park which is around a 4 hour drive from Amboseli.

You’ll arrive in Tsavo West in time for lunch either at your lodge or as a picnic.

You’ll then embark on an afternoon game drive within the national park before venturing to your lodge for the night after the park gate’s close at 6pm.

Black rhino and ostrich in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

About Tsavo West

Tsavo West is part of Kenya’s largest National Park called Tsavo which is split into two parts (East and West) by a highway and railway line. Tsavo West is the most popular of the two, partly due to the stunning landscapes as well as the array of wildlife you can find there.

Tsavo West is particularly famous for being one of the best places to see black rhinos.

Additionally, Tsavo is known for its lions, particularly for housing the maneaters of Tsavo who caused havoc in 1898, killing dozens of railway construction workers. Whilst the maneaters of Tsavo may not be alive today, it’s still thrilling to see their descendants.

As well as having a fascinating history, the lions of Tsavo are also interesting to see as unlike most lions, the male lions here don’t grow manes. There are two theories for this. Firstly, it’s hotter in Tsavo than other regions so perhaps having thick manes would be too hot for the lions. Secondly, the vegetation is denser in Tsavo so perhaps it was impractical to have a large mane as it’s more likely to snag on thorns.

The landscape in Tsavo West is also unique. Shetani Lava Flows (a great expanse of folded lava ) and Mzima Springs (natural volcanic springs which house a number of hippos) are two key attractions within the park.

Tips for Visiting Tsavo West

The best time to visit Tsavo West is in the dry season, particularly between June and October. In the wet season, the roads can become impassable.

On my most recent trip to Kenya which took place in November 2023 I was meant to be visiting Tsavo West but due to large amounts of rain roads both to the park and within it were completely flooded and I was forced to skip it from my itinerary. My driver was able to communicate with another vehicle within the park only to find that many routes within the park were closed, making it difficult to have a safari there.

Spend the night in a tented camp or lodge that’s either within Tsavo West National Park or just outside it. There are camps on all sides of the park.

Zebras in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya

After a week of exciting safaris, it’s time to unwind on Kenya’s scenic coastline. There’s still time for one last game drive this morning before you venture to the coast.

This morning you’ll enjoy a game drive in Tsavo West National Park. I’d recommend a game drive that starts early in the morning (6am) as this gives you the best chance to see predators and rhinos.

You can have an early picnic lunch within the park before journeying to Diani Beach.

Diani Beach is around a 5 hour drive from Tsavo West National Park. You should arrive in Diani by late afternoon, in time for a spot of relaxation on the beach.

About Diani Beach

Often touted as one of the best beaches in Kenya, Diani lies 30 km south of the bustling city of Mombasa. Diani looks like something straight off a postcard, white-sand beaches fringed by lazy palm trees, crystal clear waters lapping against the shore.

The beach is backed by an array of resorts and restaurants, tucked neatly behind vervent foliage.

Diani beach has been voted as the best beach in Africa for 5 years in a row due to not only its beauty but the number of things to do here such as jetskiing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling and scuba diving. In fact, it’s often classed as one of the best kitesurfing spots in Kenya .

There are a number of hotels and guesthouses which sit behind Diani beach and have supreme views of the ocean. Additionally, there’s a number of hotels just behind the beachfront.

I’d recommend booking into a hotel which is right on the beach so that you can enjoy fabulous views from the comfort of your hotel.

Diani Beach on Kenya's coast

You have a full day to unwind in Diani. Perhaps you wish to spend the day relaxing on the beach, maybe a cocktail in hand, or maybe you want to explore the area and see the key sights of Diani.

Below I have listed some of my favourite things to do in Diani.

What to do in Diani

Snorkelling.

The waters off the coast of Diani are perfect for a spot of snorkelling due to the clarity of the water and the presence of coral reefs. The best place in Diani for snorkelling is Nomad Beach, just in front of Nomad Beach Bar & Restaurant.

There are a number of fabulous restaurants in Diani including Nomad Beach Bar & Restaurant and Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant, some of the top rated restaurants in the area.

Shimba Hills National Reserve

If you’re not quite finished with safaris yet, Shimba Hills National Reserve is one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. It’s home to elephants, giraffes, leopards, hyenas, waterbuck and much more. The most notable resident is the Sable Antelope.

You can go on game drives within the reserve.

Colobus Conservation Centre

Colobus Conservation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving the rare Colobus monkey. On a visit to the centre you can go on a guided nature walk where you can hope to encounter a troop of Colobus monkeys as well as other primates such as vervet monkeys, baboons and skye monkeys.

The Colobus Centre is open every day apart from Sunday between 8:30am and 4:30pm.

Spend another night on Diani Beach.

Camels on Diani Beach in Kenya

Driving time (excluding game drives): 10 hours

On your final day in Kenya, you will journey from Diani Beach back to Nairobi.

There are two ways to get back to Nairobi: by road or by plane.

Journeying by road takes roughly 10 hours, making it a lengthy travel day. The time is heavily dependent on traffic as the highway between Mombasa and Nairobi is currently single carriageway so it could potentially take longer.

However, driving isn’t the only option. You can take a flight from Ukunda Airport in Diani to either Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, both of which are in Nairobi. The flight takes just over an hour and typically costs between $45 and $70 per person.

If you’re driving back to Nairobi then I’d recommend leaving as early as possible to account for any delays in the road. Setting off at 7am means that you should arrive in Nairobi at 5pm when it’s still light. You want to avoid driving at night where possible and sunset is around 6:30pm. Because Kenya is on the equator, sunset is at a similar time throughout the year.

Flying from Diani to Nairobi is a lot easier. There are a number of flights that take place throughout the day, some in the morning and others in the afternoon. As the flight time is so short, you have time to relax in Diani before your flight and in Nairobi afterwards.

I’d personally recommend opting to fly to Nairobi rather than driving. Flights are relatively inexpensive and will save you a lot of time.

Final thoughts

Kenya is a fantastic destination for an African safari. The country houses an array of national parks and reserves, each teeming with life. I’ve had some of my favourite safari experiences in Kenya!

A 7 day safari allows you to visit Kenya’s highlights, namely the Masai Mara and Amboseli. Just visiting these two parks alone will give you some fantastic safari experiences.

If you have more time, then a 10 day safari allows you to visit Tsavo West before relaxing on Kenya’s most beautiful beach. Visiting Kenya’s coastline allows you to see another side to the country and to enjoy a bout of relaxation after your safari.

If you’re still undecided about where to go on your African safari, you may be interested in reading my 7-10 day Tanzania safari itinerary . Tanzania is right next door to Kenya and safaris are a similar cost. I personally love both locations equally as each country has something different to offer.

7 Days Kenya safari | One week safari Kenya

  • Family friendly
  • Honeymoon in Kenya
  • Nairobi Safari Tours
  • Wildebeest Migration Safaris

This is the best One-week safari in Kenya you can take! This 7-day Kenya Safari takes you to the most iconic national parks and reserves in Kenya, from the prominent Masai Mara Game Reserve where you can spot the Big Five and watch the Great Wildebeests Migration, to the Rhino watching at Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru National Park where you can enjoy beautiful sights of colorful flamingos.

The 7-day safari in Kenya starts and ends at Nairobi, the capital of Kenya and unofficially; the capital of safari in Africa, due to the city being a major hub for the East and Central African Region. Most flights to East Africa fly in and out of Nairobi, and most combined safaris that include Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zanzibar Island start here and this one-week safari in Kenya can be customized to include the other parks like Tanzania Safari or Rwanda Gorilla treks. The week-long wildlife safari tour in Kenya can also be customized to have a beach vacation extension at the end of the safari. We can always arrange a flight from Masai Mara to the Kenyan Coast; Mombasa or Diani, or we can also take you to Nairobi for an afternoon flight to the coast for beach extension.

7-day Kenya Safari Outline

Day 1 – Transfer from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Day 2 – Explore the Ol Pejeta Conservancy (optional Walking and night safaris). Day 3 – Proceed to Lake Nakuru Day 4 – Transfer to Masai Mara National Reserve Day 5 – Full-day safari in Masai Mara National Reserve Day 6 – Full-day safari in Masai Mara National Reserve Day 7 – Morning safari in Masai Mara, transfer back to Nairobi

7 Days Safari in Kenya – what you will see?

As indicated, this is a Big Five safari in Kenya so with a little luck you may spot all the Big Five animals of the African Safari, namely; Lions, Elephants, Buffalos, Rhinos, and the elusive leopards if you are lucky. Masai Mara is the annual venue for the world’s largest wildlife spectacle that is the Wildebeest Migration which happens between July and October. Other common animals that you expect to see includes giraffes, zebras, impalas, gazelles, Elands, topis, Hartebeests, Dik diks, warthogs, cheetahs, Hyenas, and many more.

The parks that you visit are also great birding havens and you expect to see many birds. Masai Mara has recorded more than 470 bird species while Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta have both recorded more than 500 bird species.

7 Days Kenya Safari where to stay?

In this seven-day Kenya safari expedition we have included some nice mid-range lodges and tented camps as well as an option for standard luxury accommodations so that you can choose. It is however a sample 7-day Kenya tour which we can customize in anyway in order to suit your preference and budget. We can include either cheaper budget accommodations or include even more Deluxe to High end / top market lodges and camps depending on your pocket.

The lodges and camps used on this 7-day Kenya wildlife safari are generally ‘family friendly’. We can however use other accommodations in case you have special requests for your family, features that may not be at these public accommodations. We have contracts with hundreds of lodges and camps in Kenya; hand-picked places that we visit and inspect regularly.

Possible customization;

The seven-day Kenyan expedition can also include Samburu & Shaba Game Reserves in Northern Kenya where you will get the chance to spot some of the rarest and endangered wildlife species such as the gerenuks, Somali ostriches, the Beisa oryx, and the reticulated giraffes. By reducing the number of nights at Olpejeta, you can include a visit to bothOlpejeta

Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel.
