Local News | Woodward Dream Cruise official merchandise now available

This year’s merchandise is now available at shopwdc.com .

The 2023 T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, women’s tank tops and collectible pins feature a Ford Galaxie 500. Pins are $5, T-shirts are $20, tank tops are $25 and hoodies are $40.

As always, as much as half of the sale price of official merchandise goes to several area charities, said Richard Artymovich, vice president of E.A. Graphics of Sterling Heights, which has handled the cruise merchandise for years.

The company takes a team approach to selecting a design each year, he said.

Look for these elements to make sure you’re getting official merchandise:

– It will bear the names of the Oakland County communities along Woodward Avenue that participate in the cruise.

– It will have the names of the sponsors on the sleeve: Ford Motor Co., WXYZ-TV and WOMC 104.3 FM Radio.

Dream cruise clothing comes in numerous colors and sizes.

Collectors can even order merchandise from previous years on the official website.

The cruise from Ferndale to Pontiac will be held on Aug. 19 this year.

The cruise began as a small fundraiser in 1995 and grew into one of the largest vintage car events in the world, drawing crowds of up to 1 million people per year.

It features parades, live music, food and more, with some events held on the eve of the official cruise.

Official merchandise is also available at Ferndale City Hall, 300 E. Nine Mile Road, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Woodward Dream Cruise returns this weekend. Here's what to know about parking, events and more

(CBS DETROIT) - The Woodward Dream Cruise is here for its 2023 season! Here's everything you need to know about the route, parking, free bus rides, community events and more!

When and where is the Woodward Dream Cruise? 

The event will happen on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

The Woodward Dream Cruise was founded in 1995 and goes through nine Oakland County communities along 16 miles of Woodward Avenue. 

The participating communities include Pontiac, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale.

What can visitors expect during the Woodward Dream Cruise?

Every year, the event draws in about 1.5 million people who can expect to see over 400,000 cars, including muscle, street rods, custom builds, collector cars and special edition vehicles participating in the cruise. 

Ford Motor Company is again the event's sponsor for the sixth consecutive year. 

"It's incredibly special to celebrate Ford's 120th Anniversary with Henry Ford's first race car along with our entire portfolio to help power the Woodward Dream Cruise," said Bryan Guldi, Ford U.S. branded activations manager, in a press release. "Collaborating with the Woodward Dream Cruise is very important to Ford Motor Company because we strive to contribute and give back in meaningful ways to the communities where we live, work... and cruise."

The 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise features the new Mustang Dark Horse, which is debuting this summer with an updated look and maintains manual transmission.

Ford will also feature its Bronco Raptor and F-150 Lightning at the event. 

Will there be construction during the Woodward Dream Cruise? 

The construction on Woodward Avenue from Eight Mile Road to Oakridge Street will pause for the event. 

Cars will have access to all four lanes of Woodward Avenue in both directions. 

Where to park during the Woodward Dream Cruise?

Parking is available along the route, and according to the Woodward Dream Cruise's website, here are some areas guests can find parking:

Royal Oak Golf Center: Corner of Coolidge and West 13 Mile Rd. Gunn Dyer Park: South of Normandy between Coolidge and Woodward. Upton Park: South of West 14 mile Rd and Coolidge.

• City of Birmingham: All activities are within walking distance of the city's downtown parking decks.
• City of Ferndale: The municipal parking lots surround downtown Ferndale, near Woodward Avenue & Nine Mile Rd.
• City of Pontiac: Municipal parking lots and structures surround downtown Pontiac.
• City of Royal Oak: Guest parking is available at municipal parking lots and within walking distance from Woodward. Specifically, guests can look for parking at the Royal Oak Golf Center, Gunn Dyer Park and Upton Park. 

In addition, the event website shared a Facebook account where the community shares more information about where visitors can find parking and other events. 

How to get SMART bus rides during the Woodward Dream Cruise?

During the Woodward Dream Cruise, the SMART Shuttle will be free for everyone who wants to ride. People can catch a ride at any of the SMART RED or FAST bus stops from Eight Mile Road to Pontiac.

• The Woodward Dream Cruise Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: This ceremony will start at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, on East Nine Mile Road at Woodward Avenue.
• Lights & Sirens Cruise: This parade will happen at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, following the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The procession will head north on Woodward to 11 Mile Road and return to Nine Mile Road.

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – When enthusiasts hear the words “Woodward Avenue,” they likely think about Detroit’s massive annual Woodward Dream Cruise, where more than a million people and some 45,000 classic and collectible vehicles converge each August on the famed roadway. Beyond Woodward’s historic link to Detroit’s automotive industry, auto buffs come to celebrate that time from “back in the day” when engineers and designers from the Big Three hung out after-hours on Woodward to cruise-test their latest offerings during the Muscle Car wars of the late-1960’s. But for the rest of the fair-weather weekends of the year there’s another car ritual that takes place along the well-known avenue on a much smaller scale. It’s the weekly “Cars & Coffee” gathering that happens every Saturday morning at Pasteiner’s Auto Zone Hobbies along Woodward in Birmingham, Michigan.

Steve Pasteiner Jr.’s storefront shop is chock full of car magazines, books, models and all sorts of auto memorabilia, and it often draws 100 or more muscle cars, hot rods, classics and exotics from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturdays – as well as a mix of auto execs with their latest new rides and gearheads with their just-finished creations, and just about every other kind of car nut in-between. We count on our own photojournalist correspondent Bill Cook to keep us in the loop on what kind of rides show up during these early morning gatherings (weather permitting).

Cook lives in nearby Rochester, Michigan, and grew up in a Ford family with his dad working at Ford Division Marketing and Sales. Throughout his own long Ford marketing career, Bill was well-known within the company as an active enthusiast and club member who could always be counted upon to show off photos of the many car shows and events that he attends regularly all across the Midwest. In retirement, it is no different. That’s why it’s no surprise that Bill is a frequent visitor to this cool “Cars & Coffee” on Woodward, and that each month he sends us a collection of photos that he snaps of the Ford-powered rides that he finds parked around Pasteiner’s. When the first event of the spring was announced, we knew we’d be getting a selection of photos from Bill -- so take a look at some of the rides he spotted on a cold Saturday on Woodward in the gallery below:
