Aer Travel Sling 2 Review

Aer is a brand that should be familiar to most within this community. As purveyors of tech-focused, mostly black, aesthetically minimal packs they’ve been making a name for themselves since 2014. Their focus on simplicity, utility, and durability has garnered a largely positive reputation in the years since. And with each generation of products, they aim to make meaningful updates based on real-world usage and feedback. 

We’re here today to take a look at the  Aer Travel Sling 2 , which is a pretty thorough design update from the original. Though travel is in the name of this bag, don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s only suitable for that role. I’ve been putting it to daily use over the past few months as my work bag (in addition to travel applications) and I’m ready to share my thoughts.  

Let’s dig in.

Who It Suits

This is a bag that gravitates towards the tech-savvy; if you need to carry an array of tech devices securely on a daily basis, this is a great option to consider. If you’re into sleek, minimal aesthetics with a dash of techwear, this is for you. Additionally, it will make a great secondary carry-on bag for travel purposes to make your devices and travel necessities easier to access. 

Who It Doesn’t

Anyone who isn’t a fan of sling or messenger-style bags won’t suddenly be enlightened by this bag. If you need to carry a lot more than your tech, this will run out of space. Additionally, if you need to, or prefer to carry on your right shoulder, unfortunately, this is not your bag. While you can hang the bag off your right shoulder, it is designed for cross-body wear.

Aesthetically speaking, Aer’s products predominantly feature a minimal, tech-forward look which suits all genders. Though, in my opinion, I would say they are slightly masculine in their appearance. The Travel Sling 2 is currently available in two different colorways, Black and Heather Gray. There is no wrong choice between the two as they both suit the overall silhouette of the bag very well.

I also am a big fan of the updated patterning of this version over the original Travel Sling, which was overall a more boxy design. This almost feels like a scaled-up version of the Day Sling, and the bag feels well-proportioned overall. Aer’s typical neutral gray interior liner works well enough to give you a clear view of the bag’s contents. But I must say, I love the bright orange liner they use on their X-Pac editions and I think it would really suit this bag’s overall look and feel. 

Construction

Quality of construction is, for me, one of the most important aspects when it comes to making a purchase decision with a bag. Aer has been continuously improving their construction (not that they were ever “bad”) with each generation of products they release. The Travel Sling 2 arrived with absolutely zero construction flaws upon initial inspection. And in the subsequent months of daily use I’ve put the bag through, nothing has changed. Though I haven’t yet flown with the bag, it has been on road trips, in and out of cars, and used as a daily carry for work. I’m not intentionally “rough” on bags or equipment. But I’m also not afraid to use them and the Travel Sling 2 has exhibited no signs of construction failure. This leaves me feeling fairly confident that this will continue to be the case in a longer-term scenario. 

Materials & Hardware

Aer uses quality materials on their bags and the entire exterior of the sling is constructed of 1680D Ballistic Nylon. The smooth texture of Ballistic Nylon (versus a more coarse weave like Cordura 500D and 1000D) makes it easy to clean if you do happen to get it dirty. It also means that dust and fur aren’t going to easily stick to the exterior. Thank goodness, because my Australian Shepherds’ fur is deeply embedded into just about everything I own. The interior is lined with a light gray colored pack-cloth material, similar to most of their other products. 

This makes the interior visible so none of your contents will hide in dark crevices never to be seen again. No part of the interior lining is abrasive either so everything is well protected, especially the laptop sleeve which has a soft-touch lining on the back wall of the bag. It’s worth noting that this will fit up to a 16″ MacBook Pro, but it is a bit snug. Anything smaller than that will fit easily. 

For me personally, zippers can make or break the user experience of a bag. Fortunately, I love the huge and delightfully smooth YKK #10RC zipper for the main compartment, which makes access to that primary space a breeze. The front pocket also features a YKK #10RC but this one is an AquaGuard zip so there is a little more resistance to open that compartment, though certainly not enough to cause usability issues.

The small valuables pocket features a YKK #5RC zipper with a locking pull. I found it easy to open one-handed, which is always appreciated. Additionally, the shoulder strap is nicely padded and features a sturdy Duraflex plastic buckle for quick release; though I seldom unclip messenger-style bags, preferring to just slide them on overhead. Overall I appreciate the quality of materials that Aer has chosen to work with. Despite the relatively affordable $115 price point, the bag still feels like a premium product. 

A tech sling wouldn’t be very good if it didn’t carry your tech securely, right? Fortunately, this updated design that Aer has produced is an excellent travel companion for hauling your laptop, tablet, headphones, and all of the other tech bits we typically want to carry with us. I find that it makes a great dedicated bag for this purpose. The Travel Sling 2 is capable of carrying a 16″ MacBook Pro as I mentioned earlier and has a simple but secure Velcro strap closure to keep your device secured in place while you’re mobile. I found the pocketing to be sufficient without being overly prescriptive either. If you’re a pouch organizer, however, I suggest you stick to flat pouches as they’re going to accommodate the space a bit better.

I really liked that the exterior pocket has its own volume and expands outwards rather than inwards. This allows you to still use it comfortably even if the main compartment is fairly loaded. This is great if you want to keep a few quick-access items handy without having to dig around inside the main compartment (though to be fair, this isn’t a large bag so it’s not difficult to find things).

The additional small exterior pocket is a great place to drop things like your phone, or passport, and tickets while traveling. However, there is no organization so there’s no way to separate your things in there; it’s just a quick drop spot. But in my opinion, pockets like that are still incredibly useful to have on a bag like this.

Lastly, the Aer Travel Sling 2 features two external lash straps, which is a carry-over feature from the original design. I imagine it would be useful if one was carrying something like an umbrella or a tightly rolled jacket, but I personally found little use for them; they felt a bit vestigial to me and I would have preferred if they were removable. They do mostly stay out of the way, which is appreciated. But for a company so focused on clean and minimalist designs, this one small detail felt a bit out of character.

Performance

When reviewing a bag, I generally prefer to spend at least a month or two (ideally longer) with it to get a real idea of what it’s like to live with and to see if any potential issues arise from daily use. Fortunately, the Travel Sling 2 is built from quality materials and hasn’t shown any signs of failure for me. But this is a great moment to praise Aer for offering a lifetime warranty on their products. If you do have an issue during the practical lifetime of the bag, Aer will be there to support you. I like that.

This is a sling bag designed to carry your tech. Naturally, our devices often wind up being some of the heaviest things we carry. That’s important to keep in mind with something meant to only be carried on one shoulder. The shoulder strap itself is reasonably well padded but if the bag is fully loaded I would have preferred that the wider portion of the strap be extended further to distribute the weight a little better over my shoulder. That’s not to say it’s uncomfortable. But I found that when the bag was loaded with all of my tech for work, the weight was noticeable. And it was especially noticeable if the bag was overloaded.

I also need to mention that the strap is non-removable and non-reversible. Meaning if you want to wear it cross-body as designed, it can only be worn slung over your left shoulder. This doesn’t personally bother me as it’s how I typically would wear such a bag. But for those of you who prefer (or need) to wear a bag over your right shoulder, this is not going to be the option for you. 

The Travel Sling 2 is naturally meant to be a cross-body sling, but you can also carry it by its handle. Fortunately, the top handle is quite comfortable in the hand as it’s a doubled-up webbing which makes it feel plush. So while it can’t really be carried “briefcase-style” with the shoulder strap, it does at least carry nicely when you need to use the handle.

Weatherability

The Aer Travel Sling 2 is made of a very sturdy set of materials and though they will provide some water repellency, they are not explicitly waterproof. The zippers, smooth as they are, are YKK RC and not of the AquaGuard variety, except for the front pocket (a curious anomaly). The point being, it will probably be fine in light rain. But I wouldn’t subject it to any extreme weather and expect everything inside to remain perfectly dry. There isn’t an external rainfly for the Travel Sling 2 available from Aer directly. But it wouldn’t be too hard to rig up something from a third party that is close enough to the dimensions of this bag.

Not So Good

Though the Travel Sling 2 isn’t an entirely new design from Aer, it is a refined silhouette that borrows from their other lines (you can see influences from the Day Sling). What they’ve done though is slightly increase the length and depth which ultimately gives the user a much more useful footprint over the original. The internal layout is a delight for carrying your laptop, headphones, and tech necessities on a daily basis with enough room for a few extras whilst traveling. In the time I’ve been using the Aer Travel Sling 2 I never found it got in my way or caused any sort of frustration. This says a lot as I can be rather picky when it comes to bag designs. If you’re looking for a daily tech hauler or slim travel companion, be sure to put this on your list. It’s excellent value at $115.

Large enough for a few extra items, but not so big that it becomes a cumbersome burden of doom, the Day Sling 2 strikes a nice balance between size, organization, and usefulness.

If you’re curious about the organization and carry capacity of a bag so small, then you’ve come to the right place. This Aer Day Sling review covers as much detail as we can about this relatively simplistic, but also highly functional, pack.

Yes, it’s small, but it’s also thoughtfully designed so you’re able to make good use of a minimal amount of storage space. In each section of this review of the Aer Day Sling 2, we’ll give you the details about how this sling bag stacks up for overall functionality.  

Organization

Aer has divided the Day Sling 2 into three compartments; one main compartment, a smaller front pocket, and a hidden back pocket for your passport or valuables. It’s actually impressive how organization friendly the Day Sling 2 is for such a small bag. 

The main pocket of the Day Sling 2 is big enough for a tablet up to 7.9 inches. Alternatively, it could also be used for your phone, guidebook, a small  water bottle, phone charger, or an extra battery. 

Inside the main pocket, there are a few small sub-dividers to help keep your items organized, including a zippered pocket along the back. It’s a nice touch, and helpful for people who have multiple smaller items they want to keep straight. 

The front pocket is a bit smaller, but there’s still room for sunglasses , a camera, and a granola bar for sustenance during the day. 

For more sensitive items, you can use the hidden stash pocket in the back of the bag, which is big enough for your passport, wallet, or spare cash.

The Exterior and Materials

The Aer Day Sling 2 is made from the same 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon material that other Aer products are made of, so it’s meant to last longer than your average cheap sling bag. 

Each of the compartments, including the hidden back pocket, has a YKK zipper for an easy, non-snagging opening. 

Other than that, there’s not too much going on with the outside of the bag. Aer has kept with their trend of having a simple exterior design to create an overall appearance of effortless style. 

Fit and Comfort

There are varying opinions about the overall comfort of the Aer Day Sling 2, and no “correct” answer either way. Some people simply prefer a shoulder sling , while other people find this uncomfortable and awkward to carry. 

The strap of the Day Sling 2 is made from soft and adjustable webbing, with a clip on one end to easily take the bag off if you don’t want to slip it over your head. There’s also a wide range of adjustment on the strap so you can alter it to the length most comfortable for you. 

Carry Options and Best Use

You can either carry the Day Sling 2 on your back or to your side, depending on which you prefer. It’s also easy to alter shoulders or switch between positions to give one shoulder a break throughout the day. 

One corner of the Day Sling 2 also has a larger gear loop which can be used to carry the pack by hand. 

Since the bag is so small, it can fit into a variety of settings, whether you’re an international traveler, university student, or city commuter. If you’re going sightseeing for an afternoon, it will probably be enough to carry your gear, but obviously it’s too small to be your sole travel bag. 

You can also use the Day Sling 2 as a secondary bag along with another backpack or briefcase. Thanks to the position and carry options, it’s a more secure bag to keep valuables, plus it’s easier to reach your phone or camera to take photos if you’re traveling. 

Weight and Capacity

The Day Sling 2 has a capacity of 4.5 liters and weighs 0.7 pounds, making it light enough to carry for a long period of time without getting sore, but still big enough to carry a decent amount of gear for a small sling bag.

Toughness and Durability

Aer has made the Day Sling 2 fairly weather resistant thanks to the Cordura ballistic nylon exterior. The material is weatherproof enough to hold up against light rain showers or an accidental spill, so long as the bag isn’t entirely dowsed. 

It’s not really designed for rough outdoor adventure , and would probably just get in the way if you’re mountain biking or running. However, for urban use, sightseeing, or light walking, the pack is strong enough to hold up for years if given proper care. 

One of the benefits of having a close-carry sling bag is that it is generally a more secure option than a bulky backpack, which is easier for thieves to slip their hand inside. Since it’s so small, it’s also guaranteed to qualify as a personal item while traveling by plane. 

Also, when Aer says that the back pocket is “hidden,” they’re telling the truth. Thanks to how the zipper tucks away and the opening totally blends into the bag, no one will know that pocket even exists until you show them. 

Unlike some of Aer’s other products, the Day Sling 2 doesn’t have locking zippers, but for a bag so small, this probably won’t be an issue. 

Sling Aesthetics

The aesthetics of the Day Sling 2 are a matter of personal preference. Some people like the look of sling bags, other people find them either awkward in appearance and use. 

Overall, the Day Sling 2 strikes a good balance between looking nice, but not overly flashy, and can fit into a variety of situations, from tourist travel to daily commutes on the bus going work or school. 

Like most Aer products, the simplistic exterior undermines the organization ability, and the black-on-black design means that the bag will fit with almost any outfit or personal style. 

The biggest con of the Aer Day Sling 2 is also its main pro attribute: it’s a small bag. It’s just not meant to carry more than a few essential items for the day. 

If you don’t like shoulder bags, then obviously the Day Sling 2 is not the right day bag for you. Also, keep in mind that the shoulder strap only has a buckle on one end, so it’s not entirely removable. Again, some people like this feature because it means you won’t lose the strap, while other people prefer a removable strap for more versatility. 

The Aer Day Sling 2 probably isn’t the best choice for outdoor enthusiasts either. Although it’s relatively durable, it’s not really designed for rough and tumble adventures. Plus, for long hikes and rigorous outdoor activities, having a sturdy backpack will keep your shoulders much happier. 

In comparison to other sling bags, it’s also a bit more expensive, but this is mostly because it’s made from higher quality materials. If you already like using sling bags, then the Day Sling 2 is definitely worth the money for the quality and long-lasting product you’ll get. 

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

Now that you’ve read about the details of the Aer Day Sling 2, you might be wondering how it measures up to other sling bags on the market. Here are a few of the other best sling bags which might fit your travel style or intended use a bit better than the Aer Day Sling 2. 

Aer Day Sling 2

Patagonia Atom Sling

More of a sling backpack than a sling bag, the Red Rock Rover pack is a better option than the Aer Day Sling 2 if you’re looking for something with greater storage capacity, or for outdoor use. 

With a 9 liter capacity, 3 main compartments, plus a few smaller ones, and a thicker and comfortably padded strap, the Red Rock Rover is intended for carrying more gear, especially in an outdoor adventurist setting. 

In terms of durability, the sling bags are fairly equal, although the YKK zippers on the Aer Day Pack 2 are a bit higher quality and less likely to snag than the zippers on the Red Rock Rover. 

Although the Red Rock Rover sling is better for outdoor activities, like hiking, hunting, or fishing, it might be a bit too bulky for tourists or urban use. 

Another more outdoor-oriented sling bag, the Patagonia Atom Sling was made for hiking and adventure activities. 

It’s designed to sit between your shoulder blades, but can be easily rotated to the front when you need to get something, and the padded strap makes it more comfortable than the Aer Day Sling 2, for most people. With an 8 liter capacity, it also has a bit more storage space than the Aer Day Sling 2. 

Although it’s bigger than the Aer Day Sling 2, the Atom Sling is actually less heavy, thanks to the lightweight and more breathable material. The Atom Sling still has a weather resistant coating, and so is fairly comparable to the Day Sling 2 in terms of durability. 

In regards to appearance, the Atom Sling falls somewhere between the Aer Day Sling 2 and the Red Rock Rover Sling. It’s not quite as stylish as Aer’s sling bag, but neither does it have the same degree of rugged outdoor vibes that the Red Rock Rover Sling gives off.

Sling bags tend to be a love it or hate it product. Usually there isn’t a middle ground when it comes to personal opinion, so don’t feel bad if you’re just not amazed by the Aer Day Sling 2 for whatever reason. 

However, for folks who prefer a sling-style bag, you’ll be able to clearly see from our Aer Day Sling 2 review just why this nifty little pack is one that you’ll want to have on your radar. 

From sight-seeing while on vacation to the daily commute to work, the Aer Day Sling 2 strikes the perfect combination of size, convenience, and style for a variety of day-to-day use.

Ever since Aer launched its first crowdfunded project back in 2014, the San Francisco-based minimalist bagmaker has continued to put out exceptional products. We’ve been a big fan of the brand since day one, as it consistently finds the right balance between price, performance, and overall presentation. Earlier this year, Aer overhauled several staples within its lineup as part of an all-new fall City Collection. Given the success of bags like the Fit Pack and the Gym Duffel, we had to get hands-on to see how it fared.

Above all else, though, we were interested in seeing what Aer had done with the City Sling 2. As the second iteration of the best-selling City Sling, the bag certainly had a tough act to follow. Could it follow through on the original’s execution? Would it actually bring anything new to the table, or is the update only in name? Is it worth picking up the City Sling 2 if you already have the OG? If you find yourself asking these such questions, we’ve got you covered. First Impressions

Understated Excellence

One look at the City Sling 2 is all you need to see that it’s a bag from Aer. Like other offerings from the brand’s catalog, the sling avoids anything excessive or unnecessary in the pursuit of absolute functionality. It’s simple and understated, yet in a way that’s unquestionably sharp. That is to say, you can tell that function comes before form with the City Sling 2, but Aer’s characteristically minimalist execution works to the bag’s advantage.

A lot of this comes from the City Sling 2’s compact design. Measuring just 4.75″ by 13″ by 3.5″, it’s large enough to hold bigger items like phones, water bottles, and packable jackets, yet small enough that it won’t inhibit your motion. And here’s the thing: despite weighing in at under a pound, it offers a spacious 2.5L of storage capacity. Around the outside, the bag comes decked out with Aer’s trademark oversized YKK zippers, a set of tasteful anodized aluminum hardware, and a cutting-edge Fidlock fastener . The City Sling 2 may be rugged in build, then, but it’s also incredibly refined in its appearance.

Materials & Hardware

First-Rate Fittings

The Aer City Sling 2 comes in a variety of different fabrics, including 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon, 900D Ecoya eco-dyed polyester, and VX-42 X-Pac sailcloth. Of the three, the Cordura and the X-Pac are — by far — the most popular; however, you can’t go wrong with the muted grey of the Ecoya option either. It’s also worth noting that the only differences the X-Pac model brings lie in its use of material, interior lining (subtle grey nylon vs. high-vis orange ripstop, respectively), and reflective pulls. What’s more, it features an additional AquaGuard zipper at the main closure.

With the X-Pac bag by Dimension-Polyant (like the one we had in for test), you’re not only getting a lighter base fabric but also improved weather resistance. When combined with the waterproof zips at the front and top of the bag, the result is a sling that offers a nearly iron-clad defense against the elements. In any case, the X-Pac exterior and high-vis orange interior give the City Sling 2 an elevated aesthetic that’s on-trend with much of what’s currently popular in streetwear. It’s an ultra-premium look that feels even better in-hand.

On the other hand, the 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon used in the ‘standard’ City Sling 2 is an equally respectable option in its own right. Sure, it doesn’t offer quite the same degree of element-proofing as that of the X-Pac bag, but it’s chock full of performance benefits, too. For one, it’s the same textile used in military body armor, so you better believe that it boasts superior long-term abrasion resistance and hard-wearing dependability. We’ve used some of Aer’s Cordura bags as our personal carry for some time now, and we can confidently say that they’ll stand up to practically anything you could possibly throw at them.

Regardless of which material your bag is made from, know that Aer has fitted the City Sling 2 with some of the toughest hardware in production today. With each bag, you’re getting waterproof YKK AquaGuard zips, aircraft-grade aluminum tension locks, and a handy magnetic Fidlock fastener. Compared to the traditional buckle and plastic snaps used in the original City Sling, the new hardware makes for a marked upgrade. Beyond giving the City Sling 2 a classy look, it’s a combination that’s far more durable, promising years of reliable wear.

Internal Organization

An Intuitive User Experience

The City Sling 2 may be small in size, but that’s not to say that it’s lacking in capacity. On the contrary — Aer revised the original design such that it now boasts a generous 2.5L of storage. While a mere 0.1L extra might not sound like much on paper, the bag now features a wider footprint that makes it much more accommodating — especially of bulky or oddly-shaped items like water bottles. And besides, it comes with organizational provisions aplenty.

Inside the cavernous main compartment, the City Sling 2 features a series of elasticated dividers for keeping your carry safe and secure. On one side, Aer has fitted a single sleeve that’s perfect for packing away delicate items such as phones and sunglasses. In the middle, the bag offers a spacious cavity that’s large enough for everything from notebooks and pens to camera lenses and bottles of hand sanitizer. Rounded out by a set of stretchy mesh pouches for cords, charging banks, and headphones, it even comes with a small zippered pocket that’s great for stowing smaller essentials like SD cards, knives, and other easy-to-lose items.

Feel around the outside and you’ll find that Aer has fitted the City Sling 2 with a hidden back pocket for stashing valuable essentials such as wallets and passports. In addition to some extra security, it also gives the bag some added convenience — you can quickly reach these items without having to fumble through the inside of the sling or risk upsetting your organization. One of the best aspects of the City Sling 2, though, is that it sports a zippered front pocket with a built-in lanyard. Simply clip your keys to the beefy carabiner and you have almost instantaneous access — a game-changing feature for those who are constantly on the go.

Hiding In Plain Sight

As impressive as the City Sling 2 is from an organizational standpoint , it’s arguably even more comfortable to wear. For though the webbing strap doesn’t sport any additional padding, the bag’s small size and low weight (even when packed) mean that it rests against your body without getting in the way of your movement. Whether it’s worn front or back, it’s an easy sling to set and forget. There was absolutely no rubbing or pinching to speak of.

This is largely due to the anodized aluminum sliders found on either side of the buckle, as they make it effortless to achieve the right fit. A quick pull is all it takes to have the bag sized to your torso. As if that wasn’t enough, though, Aer has also designed the strap to cinch down for storage in the sleeve on the back of the sling. Because of the quick-grab handle found atop the City Sling 2, this means that the bag can conveniently double as a small tech organizer.

The most ingenious part about the strap, though, has to be the tension locks located on each side of the bag. No matter if you’re only bringing along the bare essentials or you’re stuffing the sling to full capacity, they make it quick and easy to compress the size. For those who find themselves in urban environments , the locks also make for an added element of theft protection — you can keep the bag tight and low-profile against your person.

Closing Thoughts

Constant Progress

More of an iterative refinement than it is an out-and-out overhaul, the City Sling 2 is nevertheless an exceptional EDC-ready bag. For even though it’s not a drastically different silhouette, Aer has given its best-selling sling some subtle but impactful upgrades. The wider design greatly improves the bag’s storage potential, and the thoughtful internal organization means that it fares far better when carrying larger items. Moreover, the new hardware gives the bag some added aesthetic appeal as well as some extra long-term durability. Whether you consider the extra coin of the X-Pac model ($109 vs. $89) worth it will depend on your particular needs and tastes. However, we’ll be the first to tell you: the City Sling 2 is a certifiable buy in our book. A fitting successor to an EDC icon , Aer’s bag is a sling that still reigns supreme.

This Best-selling Trekking Boot Now Comes in a Lightweight, Packable Trail Runner That Doubles for Hikes

As a lifelong hiker, I’ve worn my way through many pairs of hiking shoes and learned what works for me in terms of ankle support, traction, and overall comfort along the way. My Merrell Moab 3 Hiking Boots are a tried-and-true pair that I’ve relied on for a number of arduous hikes, including Iceland’s tricky terrain and  five days of thru hiking on Sweden’s Kungsleden Trail. So when Merrell recently launched its new Moab Speed 2 Hiking Shoe — a modernized, lightweight trail runner that incorporates many features of the Moab 3 — I was intrigued to try them out. 

Compared to the best-selling Moab 3 Hiking Boots, the Moab Speed 2 trail runners offer a sleeker, more breathable design that’s just as ready for adventure. They’re available in men’s (7 to 15) and women’s (5 to 11) sizes, including non-waterproof, GORE-TEX , and Mid GORE-TEX styles. While they’re intended for hitting the trails, the lower profile of the first two styles especially makes them well-suited for casual walks and urban exploration, too. Upgrading to the GORE-TEX and Mid GORE-TEX styles may be advantageous for hikers in wetter climates or seeking stronger ankle support. 

Merrell Men’s Moab Speed 2 Hiking Shoe

On first wear, the hiking shoe’s traction stood out to me. Merrell’s proprietary Vibram outsole includes 4mm lugs that deliver ample grip on rocky and slippery terrain. I also was impressed that they didn’t get caked with mud on some of my spring hikes. The lightweight design and flexibility are also noteworthy. The Moab Speed 2 is equipped with Merrell’s Lightweight FlexPlate technology, which offers flexibility in the forefoot while keeping lateral stability in check. One shopper on Merrell’s website noted that they are the perfect fit and very lightweight. “Almost don’t know you’re wearing them. Did a 5km walk yesterday and [my] feet feel great.”

The Moab Speed 2 comes in both medium and wide width options. The toe box is on the narrower side, so consider choosing the wider version for more wiggle room in the front of the shoe. While some shoppers note having to go up a half size, I was able to fit my insoles into a pair of size 14s (my usual size) no problem. Each version has multiple colorways to choose from. I opted for the Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX in Rye for its ‘90s-esque color scheme and aesthetic. 

The shoes also prioritize sustainability in their design. The laces, webbing, mesh lining, mesh footbed cover are made with 100-percent recycled materials, while the EVA foam footbed incorporates 50-percent recycled content. 

Merrell Women’s Moab Speed 2 Hiking Shoe

This hiking shoe includes a 30-percent increase in foam underfoot for lasting comfort on the trails. Merrell’s FloatPro Foam midsole delivers ample padding without tacking on too much weight (a pair of men’s Moab Speed 2s clocks in at just over 1.5 pounds). As one shopper put it: “They were the most comfortable sneakers I’ve worn,” adding that they walked away from three days of hiking without any blisters. “You can walk for miles in these and not feel a thing,” raved another hiker. 

The versatile use between hiking and daily walks is another popular selling point for shoppers. “I walk 2 to 3 miles every day, and these are great for either pavement or light hiking,” said one hiker. “We walk one hour a day over hill and dale, regardless of weather, and we couldn't ask more of our footwear” wrote another.

The Aer Go Sling has seen a complete redesign from the previous iteration . The first model was shaped similarly to a portrait-style photo, whereas the new offering from the San Fransisco-based modern bag company is shaped like a beautiful vast panorama. It looks a lot sleeker, but how does it perform? Let’s dive in and find out.

External Components

The sling is crafted from 210D Cordura crinkle nylon. It’s bluesign® approved, which means that the materials are sustainably sourced, which is a great shout. All Aer products we’ve tested since the release of the Travel Pack 3 , Flight Pack 3 , and Day Sling 3 have had such a designation—so this isn’t a one-off—but it’s worth commending.

Throughout the pack, we have YKK zippers, which work as we’d expect them to. If you try to open the pack with one hand, the zipper can get caught in the corner occasionally, but most of the time, there isn’t an issue. The exterior zipper pulls are made of Hypalon, which is easy to grab onto and feels sleek. The adjustment hardware is from Duraflex, and changing the strap length is easy. The buckle is from Woojin, replacing a larger FIDLOCK on the previous iteration. We find this one a lot easier to use and a lot more minimalistic. It doesn’t come open when we don’t want it to, which is the most crucial feature regarding closure.

The strap is extraordinarily thin but works for the sling’s size. At 0.8 liters, you can’t fit a ton of gear inside to overload the strap. There’s a strap keeper to ensure no extra material bothers you while you’re going about your business. There’s a loop on the left (or right side if you’re wearing it) which makes hanging it up easy. You can throw it over a post, attach a carabiner, or use it as a fidget when a mariachi band comes onto the subway while you’re talking seriously with your partner about your future. No matter which way you choose, it’s helpful.

Overall, the materials are lightweight and don’t take up much room. When there isn’t anything inside the sling, you can easily stow it inside your daypack or travel backpack . In addition to compressing to be nearly flat, you can fold it up to slide inside a pocket on another piece of equipment. When rolled, it’s roughly the size of the skinnier cans of pop you see in Europe, and it fits in the palm of your hand. Although you can’t hide them completely, the straps slide into the main compartment fairly easily. This means that they won’t act like a lasso inside your pack, get stuck on your underwear like a bull, and come flying out when you’re trying to grab your sling in the middle of a crowded train station. Our references have been oddly specific so far, but that shows you how well we’ve gotten to know this sling in testing!

There isn’t a back panel—or at least there isn’t any aeration or padding to speak of. There’s material there, but it’s the same as we see on the front side of the pack. The Crinkle nylon is comfortable to hold in your hand and is semi-soft, so it won’t feel rough if you’re wearing a tank or crop top.

The strap doesn’t have any padding or aeration either, though it isn’t overwhelmed due to the sling’s size. If you were to fill it up with dense items, like all the tech in your tech kit, or rocks, you might start to feel it digging into your shoulder. However, we never have such an issue unless we purposely pull on the sling to try to feel the effect.

The strap isn’t removable like it was on the first iteration of the Go Sling, but that doesn’t bother us much. This isn’t a piece of equipment you would need to remove the carry function from—it operates as a sling and not much else—and we dig that.

Inside The Sling

The Go Sling 2 has a fair amount of organization for such a small piece of gear. Two elastic pockets on the front side of the main compartment’s interior are large enough for a wallet, charging cables, or other handheld gear.

A liner pocket on the back side is suitable for a phone, small notebook, or similarly sized item. It isn’t large enough for a kindle or tablet, which is a nod to the nature of this sling. It’s for what you’d typically throw in your pockets should you not have them, or if you want to keep something else in your pockets so your EDC gear can live in here instead.

On the outside of the liner pocket, there’s a zippered compartment with a YKK #3 zipper. This is an intelligent addition because the other places to stow smaller gear don’t have a closure, so this becomes the place for the gear you want to lock down. An uncased or smaller phone will fit here, but larger phones or those with significant cases won’t. A passport won’t work either, which is a bummer for those who like extra security, but it will fit in the liner pocket.

Overall, the Go Sling 2 is a great companion for travelers of all sorts. If you want a sling to help take the load off your pockets, it’s a great shout. Or, if you like to keep things as minimal as possible but can’t cut a sling out of your packing list , the Go Sling 2 is a perfect fit. It probably won’t work if you like to bring everything and the kitchen sink along for the ride. Well, unless you get five…but that might be overdoing it!
