Who Needs a Visa for Slovenia?

You will have to apply for a visa when travelling to Slovenia if you are:

  • A citizen of a non-EU  country that has not reached a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU .
  • A citizen of a non-EU country that has reached a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU, but you were rejected from entering Slovenia or any other Schengen country visa-free.

Additionally, even if you are from a country which has a visa-free agreement, you may need to apply for a visa if you have been denied entry, for any reason.

Who Is Visa Exempt?

You are exempt from applying for a visa to enter Slovenia if you fall into any of the following categories:

  • You are a citizen of an EU member state, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.
  • You hold a passport from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, or any  other country with a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU .
  • You possess a valid residence permit from any country within the Schengen area.

For those exempt from a visa, check out the required documents for entry into Slovenia. It’s always good to be prepared!

Understand the Type of Visa You Need

If your plan involves a short trip to Slovenia, lasting up to 90 days, whether it’s for tourism, visiting friends and family, or business purposes, you should apply for a short-stay visa, commonly referred to as a C-type or Schengen Visa. You have to select the reason why you are applying for the visa when completing the visa application form.

However, if your visit involves other purposes or you plan to stay in Slovenia for more than 90 days, you’ll need a long-stay visa, also known as a D-type visa.

Short-Stay Visa (C) Types

There is a single type of Schengen Visa, known as the C type, applicable for short-term visits. However, this visa caters to various purposes. Those include:

  • Airport transit visa .  You need to apply for a transit visa if you are travelling through Slovenia as a transit country before reaching your main destination.
  • Tourist Visa. For individuals visiting Slovenia for tourism and leisure purposes.
  • Visitor Visa. Issued to those planning to visit friends or family in Slovenia.
  • Medical Visa. Granted to individuals seeking medical treatment or consultations in Slovenia.
  • Cultural Visa . Available for participation in festivals, sports events, religious events, or other cultural programs within the country.
  • Business Visa. Granted to individuals conducting business activities such as meetings, conferences, or negotiations in Slovenia.
  • Official Visit Visa . Intended for government officials, diplomats, or representatives traveling to Slovenia for official purposes.
  • Short term study visa. Designed for individuals attending short-term educational programs, conferences, workshops, or seminars in Slovenia.

Determine Where to Lodge Your Application

You have to apply for a Slovenian Schengen visa at an embassy or consulate or at VFS Global which is an appointed (third-party) visa application centre.

Finding the Right Submission Location

Where you apply depends on where you are legally living:

  • Apply at a VFS application centre if live in Australia, Belarus, Canada, China, Egypt, Fiji, India, Iraq, Kosovo, Kuwait, Mexico, Russia, Turkiye, Ukraine the United Kingdom, or the United States of America.
  • Apply at a Slovenian embassy or consulate or an embassy or consulate of a country to whom Slovenia has delegated their visa application if you live in another country.

If Slovenia is the only country in the Schengen Area you plan to visit, it’s straightforward – apply at the Slovenian embassy/consulate or the authorized Visa Application Center (VAC) in your country of residence. However, if your journey includes Slovenia and at least one more Schengen state, apply at the Slovenian embassy/consulate/VAC in your country of residence only if:

  • You will spend more days in Slovenia than in the other Schengen countries.
  • You will spend an equal amount of time in each country, but you are starting your Schengen adventure by entering through Slovenia.

You can’t apply for a short-stay Slovenian visa from a country where you are currently on a short-stay visa. You must hold a residence permit in the country where you are applying.

Schedule Slovenia Visa Appointment With an Embassy or Consulate

If you cannot apply through a VFS application centre, you have to schedule your appointment through one of the Slovenian diplomatic missions abroad (embassies or consulates). This process is not as straightforward since rules may change depending on the specific diplomatic mission office.

What you have to do first is check the list of Slovienian embassies or consulates here. Look for the diplomatic office (embassy or consulate) in your country of residence. Find their website. For example, the Slovenian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

embassies

Find the Visa information section on the website, and follow instructions on how to schedule your appointment (e.g. via email, phone call).

See for example:

instructions on how to schedule your appointment

Contact the embassy or consulate, and let them know you would like to request a visa appointment and inquire about possible availability.

How Can I Change or Cancel My Appointment?

If you need to change or cancel your appointment, contact the visa centre or embassy. If you need to reschedule, you might have to book another appointment—if you want to cancel altogether, notify them ahead of time so they can open your appointment slot for another possible applicant.

Appointment Fee

Scheduling an appointment for an Slovenian visa application is free of charge. However, there are other fees associated with the application process, which we have outlined below in this article.

We highly advise against scheduling appointments through non-accredited third-party intermediaries, as they may add extra fees.

When Should I Schedule My Appointment?

It is recommended to schedule your visa appointment at least 15 days before your intended travel date, but no more than six months before. If you are planning to travel during peak seasons (summer months, Christmas, and Easter holidays), consider scheduling your appointment even earlier. Remember that sometimes, there are waiting times for an appointment.

How Long Do I Have to Wait for an Appointment?

You may have to wait several days to several weeks for an appointment slot to open. This will depend on the embassy or consulate handling your application (some embassies have a higher demand) and the time of year in which you are applying (certain times of year, such as the holidays, are busier).

Prepare the Required Documents

To meet the short-term stay visa requirements for Slovenia, applicants must submit the following documents to the Slovenian embassy or consulate:

  • The Slovenia Schengen visa application form .
  • Documents generally required for any Schengen visa application .
  • Schengen visa insurance . The insurance should have a minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and include repatriation in the event of death.
  • Guarantee letter or Invitation Letter signed by the person/company/organisation inviting you to Slovenia which is certified and registered at the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia (if you are applying for a visitor, business, cultural, medical treatment visa, or any other visa which requires a host or guarantor).

Each visa application undergoes a personalized review, so the required documents may differ. Additionally, the relevant embassy or consulate may request specific documents based on your specific case or country of residence.

Please ensure that you have all the documents with you since you may risk getting your visa denied if something is missing from your application.

Understanding the Requirement for Travel Insurance

Travel Medical Insurance is compulsory for Schengen visas under Regulation (EU) 2009/810 of the European Parliament.

Slovenia visa applicants can obtain visa insurance from either Europ Assistance or vti.travel , a European insurance comparison website, comparing insurance policies of AXA, Allianz, Europ Assistance and Mutuaide.

These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by Slovenian Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of Slovenia visa rejection.

How Much Money Do I Need to Visit Slovenia

To visit get a Slovenian visa, you must have at least EUR 70 to spend every day during your stay in the country. For minors applying for a visa, this amount is halved to  EUR 35.

Attend Your Visa Appointment

On the day of your appointment, make sure you have your printed and signed application form, all your documents, and enough money to pay the visa application fee. During this visit, you will also need to answer several questions about your trip’s purpose and other relevant questions.

Make sure you arrive on time and are presentable!

Paying the Visa Application Fee

In order for your visa application to be processed, you must pay the application fee, which is €80 for adults . If you are applying through VFS, there will be an additional service fee of no more than €40 (or less). You have to pay the fee on the currency of your country of residence.

If you have to pay the fee before you attend the appointment (e.g., online or through an invoice), make sure that you attach the payment receipt with your documents.

Attending the Visa Interview

During your appointment, the consular officers may ask you questions about your trip, travel plans, and even personal information such as your work, family, etc. See some of the most common questions during Schengen visa interviews .

They’re just simple questions, so make sure you answer them all sincerely and without hesitation.

Submitting Biometric Information

When you submit your documents, you also have to submit your fingerprints and a visa photo . Please note that for a Slovenia visa application, you have to provide an electronic visa photo (.jpeg format) as well, which is attached to the application form.

If you have applied for a Schengen visa in the last five years, you might be exempt from submitting your fingerprints—the visa centre or embassy/consulate will let you know.

On page 7 of the electronic application form, you have to tick whether your fingerprints were taken recently and provide the date.

On the PDF application form, this is question number 28.

Wait for the Visa to Process

It will take 15 working days for your Slovenia Schengen visa to be processed. As such, it’s crucial to submit your application at least 15 working days prior to, or no more than six (6) months before, your intended visit date. Should you submit your application within less than a 15-day timeframe, it may still be accepted, but processing could take the full 15 calendar days.

So we strongly recommend applying well in advance, so that your travel plans are not delayed.

Track Your Application

While your visa application is processing, you can track your application status if you have applied through the VFS visa centre. The Track application option is on the header or navigation bar, as seen below.

 track your application

If you have applied through a Slovenian embassy or consulate, tracking your application may not be possible. Unfortunately, you simply have to check with the relevant embassy or consulate.

If Your Visa Is Granted

If the visa application is successful and you receive your visa, then you can enter Slovenia within the dates stated on your visa sticker. You will receive a single, double, or multiple entry visa—you do not always get the type of visa you applied for.

How long a visa is issued for depends on the decision of the consular officers which reviewed your application.

If Your Visa Is Rejected

If your Slovenia visa is rejected, the reason for the rejection is stated on the decision letter. The letter also lets you know whether you can appeal the decision, and how. So, if your visa is rejected, you have two options:

  • You can reapply for the visa, fixing the mistakes which lead to the rejection.
  • You can appeal the decision. To appeal a Slovenia visa refusal, you have eight days from the decision’s service to submit a written appeal. Address the appeal to the diplomatic mission or consulate which handled your application—the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will reassess it. You also have to pay the administrative fee of EUR 153.

Collect Your Passport

To collect your passport after a Slovenian visa application, wait for notification from the diplomatic mission or consulate. Visit the same location in which you applied and bring any necessary documents (e.g. visa receipt) and any identification. Present these to consulate staff, collect your passport with the visa, and verify all details are correct before leaving.

Some visa centres may send the passport to you through a courier service, but you have to pay an extra fee for this to happen.

How to Enter Slovenia?

Make sure to arrive in Slovenia within the dates indicated on your visa sticker . Don’t forget to bring along these documents:

  • Passport with the visa sticker inside.
  • Proof of travel health insurance.
  • Confirmation of where you’ll be staying.
  • Your return flight ticket.
  • Proof that you have enough money for your stay.

Is It Possible to Extend My Stay in Slovenia?

If you enter Slovenia with a Schengen visa, you cannot extend your stay past the visa’s validity. Extensions are only granted in very specific circumstances , which would prohibit you from leaving Slovenia and the Schengen Area in a timely manner.

These include humanitarian reasons, force majeure, or compelling personal reasons. Humanitarian extensions are granted for medical treatment or family emergencies. Force majeure includes events like natural disasters or political unrest, while personal reasons, such as family emergencies or legal proceedings, are also considered.

To extend a Schengen visa while in Slovenia, you should apply at the local immigration or border control authorities of Slovenia.

Can I Work in Slovenia After Entering?

No, you cannot work in Slovenia with a Schengen visa. To work in Europe, including Slovenia, you must apply for the appropriate visa and work permit.

Overview of slovenia.

Slovenia is bordered to the north by Austria, to the south and east by Croatia and Hungary, and Italy to the west. Its population of just over 2 million people speaks Slovene; Slovenia’s only official language. A relatively new country often confused with Slovakia, Slovenia gained its independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Slovenian culture is influenced by its unique position as both a Balkan and Central European state. Its capital Ljubljana years ago banned cars from its city center, rendering it both a walking paradise and one of Europe’s most sustainable cities; it has perhaps the most “green spaces” in Europe. Tivoli Park, Ljubljana’s largest and most famous, is populated by native birds and graced by botanical gardens and historic mansions. The capital boasts many historic monuments, including Ljubljana Castle, the medieval-era palace complex located on Castle Hill, which overlooks the Ljubljanica river and provides striking views of the city. Crossed by the famous 20 th century Dragon Bridge, the river is Ljubljana’s twisting heart; cafés and restaurants cluster along its banks, which also provide a picturesque route for walkers and joggers. Outside the capital, Slovenia offers a mountainous, fairytale landscape peppered with thousands of historic castles, churches, and iconic hayracks. Lake Bled beckons day-trippers with its pristine waters and iconic Bled Island, dotted with a medieval church. In the northern alpine region, outdoor enthusiasts can hike through the fields and climb the mountains of Slovenia’s only National Park, Triglav, which comprises the Julian Alps. Despite its extensive lakes and rivers, 99% of Slovenia is landlocked, and access to the Adriatic sea is limited to a handful of coastal towns, including the medieval town of Koper; the country’s s only commercial port. Slovenia signed the Schengen Agreement in 2003, becoming part of the Schengen area in 2007.

Please click here for the updated travel insurance list which is applicable with effective from 1 September 2015.

This list is applied by the Schengen States of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland as well as the European Union Member States of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. Consular Posts of Schengen States approved the travel medical insurance policy schemes for corporate travels of travel insurance companies on this list with 70 years of age as upper limit of appropriate full coverage. Acceptance of travel medical insurance policy schemes for group travels (e.g. tour or incentive groups) with 70 years of age as upper limit of appropriate full coverage is conditioned by the Consular Posts of Schengen States ability to check the coverage of individual members of these groups in the Travel Insurance Portals of Non-Life Insurers of the General Insurance Council. Failure of this verification may lead the Consular Posts of Schengen States to the request of submitting a new travel medical insurance policy for the visa procedure. Visa applicants are advised to note that other travel medical insurances issued by Indian insurance companies are not accepted for Schengen visa procedure. However, visa applicants may seek to obtain insurance in any other country where claims against the insurance company would be recoverable in a Schengen State.

NOTE1 1 This note makes reference to Article 15 of Regulation 810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 establishing a Community Code on Visas.

Visa applicants for a Schengen visa for one or two entries shall prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death, during their stay(s) on the territory of the Schengen States. Visa applicants for a uniform visa for more than two entries (multiple entries) shall prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance covering the period of their first intended visit. In addition, such applicants shall sign the statement, set out in the application form, declaring that they are aware of the need to be in possession of travel medical insurance for subsequent stays. The insurance shall be valid throughout the territory of the Schengen States and cover the entire period of the person's intended stay or transit. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000. Applicants shall, in principle, take out insurance in their country of residence. Where this is not possible, they shall seek to obtain insurance in any other country. When assessing whether the insurance cover is adequate, consulates shall ascertain whether claims against the insurance company would be recoverable in a Schengen State.

Fingerprints are collected from all applicants, except for the following: children up to 12 years of age, applicants who have submitted fingerprints in the last five years (59 months) for a short-stay visa (C Type), applicants for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible, heads of state and government and their delegations if invited for an official visit, and members of royal families if invited for an official visit.

n principle, a visa application should be lodged at least 15 calendar days before the intended visit (as this is the normal processing time) and cannot be lodged earlier than three months before the start of the intended visit. It is the applicant's responsibility to take the necessary precautions to respect the deadlines where an appointment system is in place.

An application lodged less than 15 calendar days before the intended departure may be accepted, but applicants should be informed that the processing time may be up to 15 calendar days. If the applicant insists on making the application, he or she should be informed that the final decision might be taken after the intended date of departure.

A holder of a multiple-entry visa may apply for a new visa before the expiry of the validity of the visa currently held. However, the validity of the new visa must complement the current visa, i.e. a person cannot hold two uniform visas valid for the same period of time.

Example: A Moroccan lawyer representing a gender equality NGO who frequently participates in meetings in various EU Member States holds a multiple-entry visa which expires on 31 May. She applies for a new visa on 15 April. If a new visa is issued, it should be valid from 1 June, and in such a case, the visa holder would be entitled to enter the territory of the EU Member States on the basis of the first visa that will expire during the stay and leave on the basis of the new visa.

With its vast mountainous terrain, ski resorts, beautiful lakes, stunning castles, and green rivers, Slovenia is like a fairytale land. The Slovenia tourist visa has made it easier for people to enter the country and enjoy the vast beauty it has to offer.

Also known as the Slovenia Schengen tourist visa , this is issued for people entering Slovenia for the purpose of tourism. The permit is issued for a maximum stay duration of 90 days in a 180-day period. The exact stay duration and validity depend on the decision of the consular officer processing your application. The permit can be issued as single-entry, double-entry, or even multiple-entry types depending on the number of times you would have to exit the Schengen zone.

The process of applying for a Slovenia tourist visa from India can be done in multiple ways. You can apply directly at the Embassy of Slovenia in New Delhi, or you can apply at one of the VACs (Visa Application Center) situated across India. However, before starting the application, you must ensure that you check if you are eligible for the tourist permit. After that, you can proceed to make the application as follows -

  • Obtain all the documents required for the tourist permit.
  • Visit the website of the Slovenian embassy and download the Schengen application form.
  • Fill in the application form with all the details. Mention your purpose of visit as ‘tourism’.
  • Visit the portal of the online application of the Slovenian embassy and fill in the online form.
  • Proceed to schedule an appointment at the embassy.
  • With the completed application form, documents, and fees visit the Embassy in New Delhi and submit the application. You will also have to submit your biometrics here.
  • Obtain all the documents required for the tourist category.
  • Download the Schengen application form from the website of the VAC, or the embassy.
  • Fill in all the necessary details. You must mention the purpose as ‘tourism’.
  • Proceed to schedule an appointment for the application submission at a VAC. You can do this by using the VAC’s online facility.
  • Visit the respective VAC with all the documents, application form, as well as a booking confirmation. You must pay the fees and biometrics here as well.

Please note that if you have submitted your biometrics to a Schengen permit in the past 5 years, you do not have to submit them again. You must ensure that you provide only genuine documents and true information. Failure to follow this can lead to visa rejection.

To be able to apply for the tourist permit, you must meet the following conditions -

  • You must be living in the country you are lodging the application. If you are residing in a residence permit in any foreign nation, you may apply it to the corresponding visa authority in that country.
  • You must possess a valid passport that meets all the regulations.
  • The sole purpose of your visit must be to take part in tourism and related activities.
  • You must possess sufficient funds to cover all your expenses during the entire stay period in Slovenia.
  • You must apply for the permit only if -
  • Slovenia is your only destination, or
  • Slovenia is one of your multiple Schengen destinations, in which case you will be spending the majority of the time here, or,
  • Slovenia is your port of entry into the Schengen region.

As per the Slovenia tourist visa requirements for Indian citizens , the following are the list of documents you will have to submit -

  • A valid passport-
  • It must contain at least 2 blank pages.
  • It should not be older than 10 years.

The processing time for the Slovenia tourist visa application is dependent on the validity of the permit, the number of entries, the volume of applications at the embassy, as well as your previous travel history. Normally it takes around 15 working days to process it. However, in certain cases, it takes even 30 or 60 days depending upon the complications.

The application fees for this tourist permit is dependent upon the currency exchange rates, as well as the embassy decision. Apart from the application fee, there will be biometric charges, delivery charges, as well as any service charges levied by the VAC. As a result, you must check the exact amount before starting the application.

Once you have submitted the application at one of the VACs, it is then forwarded to the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia for processing. Note that even though you have submitted the application at a VAC, the processing is done by the embassy. The VAC has absolutely no power in the processing, and cannot influence it in any circumstances.

If your visa has been approved, you can collect the passport directly from the VAC, or have it delivered to you for an additional charge.

You can perform the Slovenia visa status tracking by clicking here and entering your reference number and date of birth. Alternately, you can check your status by contacting your travel agency and have them track it for you.

Once you have successfully received your visa, you must follow the below points during your travel -

  • Keep in mind the expiry date, the duration of stay, as well as the number of entries mentioned on the visa sticker. You must not stay longer than the permitted duration.
  • Carry all the travel documents while travelling. You will be denied entry into Slovenia without this.
  • Ensure that you travel to Slovenia within 6 months of the visa issue date, or as mentioned in the Schengen sticker. After this date, your permit will become invalid and you will not be able to enter the country.
  • While you are travelling within the country, ensure that you always carry a copy of your travel documents with you.
  • While you are on a tourist permit, you cannot take part in paid work for a Slovenian company or establishment.
  • You will not be able to extend the permit under any normal conditions
  • You can move freely within the Schengen zone with this.

If you are a national of a country with which Slovenia does not have a visa-free regime, you will need a visa or residence permit in addition to a valid travel document to enter Slovenia.

A visa is a permit to  enter  a country issued by the competent diplomatic and consular representation of the Republic of Slovenia abroad. A visa is also issued  only for transit  through the territory of the Republic of Slovenia.

You can only obtain a visa if you have a valid travel document, and the validity of the travel document must be at least 3 months longer  than the validity of the visa.

The visa itself does not allow you to enter the country. If the facts that led to the visa being issued have changed, the border authorities may  refuse  entry and cancel the visa. A visa can also be  cancelled  if it is subsequently found that incorrect information was provided or material facts were withheld during the visa application process.

Visa policy

What is eu visa policy.

Under this key policy, all 27 countries in the Schengen area apply the same visa rules.

Non-EU nationals need a visa to enter the Schengen area for a visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period .

When someone enters a country in the Schengen area, the 180-day period starts. They can enter Schengen area countries as many times as they want, but only stay for a total of 90 days, every 180 days.

A Schengen visa is generally valid for every country in the Schengen area.

Visas for stays exceeding 90 days are subject to national procedures .

EU visa policy is monitored and implemented by the European Commission .

What are the main elements of EU visa policy?

Countries whose nationals require a visa.

For a list of these countries, see Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 .

Individual Schengen countries can grant visa-free access to certain categories of people - for example diplomatic staff, armed forces, refugees and school pupils on an excursion.

Countries whose nationals require a visa for airport transfers

Nationals of certain countries must have a visa - called an airport transit visa - even to simply transit through the international (non-Schengen) part of an EU airport.

Schengen countries can also impose individual airport transit requirements on certain other countries.

Countries whose nationals don't require a visa

For a list of these countries, see Annex II of the Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 .

27 of these countries have visa waiver agreements with the EU.

The decision of whether to grant visa-free status to a non-EU country is based on a variety of criteria (migration, security, considerations of human rights, reciprocity, and economic benefit - in particular in terms of tourism and foreign trade).

New travel document from 2025

From 2025, visa-exempt travellers will need to fill out an online ETIAS form and pay a small fee before being able to travel to the Schengen Area.

This form is designed to facilitate border control and security.

It is not a visa, but is comparable to similar systems in the USA (ESTA), Canada (eTA), and Australia (eVisitor).

The EU visa code sets out the procedures and conditions for issuing short-stay visas .

Operational instructions for applying the code are set out in:

  • Handbook for processing visa applications
  • Handbook for managing visa processing

The visa code also helps improve cooperation with non-EU countries on readmissions of irregular migrants , through the 'visa leverage mechanism'. Under this mechanism, if a country does not cooperate sufficiently on readmissions, restrictive measures can be imposed as regards processing visas and visa fees.

Such measures have been adopted for nationals of The Gambia:

  • Decision suspending visa-free access for Gambian nationals
  • Decision on increased visa fees for Gambian nationals

Visa facilitation agreements with non-EU countries

The EU has visa facilitation agreements in place with certain non-EU countries. Under the simplified visa regime , non-EU citizens enjoy facilitated procedures (such as lower visa fees) to obtain a visa for the Schengen area.

However, visa facilitation agreements can be suspended if a country no longer satisfies the conditions of the agreement. What then applies are the general rules of the EU visa code.

Suspensions can be triggered by an EU country or by the European Commission. Currently, 2 agreements are suspended, those with:

  • Russia (full suspension of facilitation agreement)
  • Belarus (partial suspension of facilitation agreement).

Visa facilitation agreements are linked to readmission agreements . Readmission agreements establish procedures for returning irregular migrants to the EU or non-EU country they came from (EU, non-EU nationals or stateless persons).

EU countries may also individually negotiate agreements on local border traffic with neighbouring non-EU countries. These agreements enable border residents of specific areas to cross the EU's external borders, under certain conditions, without having to obtain a visa.

Suspension of visa-free travel

The visa suspension mechanism ( Regulation No 1806/2018 , article 7) enables Schengen countries to call for a temporary suspension of a visa exemption in the event of a sudden and substantial surge in irregular migration .

If this happens, a country can notify the Commission, which can then decide to trigger the suspension mechanism.

Currently the visa waiver agreement with Vanuatu has been suspended under the suspension mechanism.

Since 2017, the Commission has been issuing annual reports on its usage of the mechanism.

Proposed changes to the suspension mechanism .

Visa reciprocity

This is when nationals of Schengen area countries do not need a visa to visit countries whose nationals also do not need a visa to visit the Schengen area.

The EU aims at achieving full visa reciprocity with non-EU countries whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement. For that purpose, a visa reciprocity mechanism is set out in Regulation No 1806/2018 ( article 7 ).

To date, the EU has achieved visa reciprocity with all visa-free third countries, except the United States .

Citizens of Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania still need a visa to visit the United States.

Visa digitalisation

The Pact on Migration and Asylum set the objective of making the visa procedure fully digitalised by 2025.

This involves:

  • replacing the visa sticker with the option to apply through a European online visa platform
  • simplifying the visa application process
  • reducing the costs for governments and applicants.

The requirements are set out in Regulation 2023/2685 and Regulation 2023/2667 .

After a transition period of 7 years, Schengen countries will all have to use the EU's standard online platform for visa applications :

  • applicants will carry out all steps in the process on the platform, except for providing biometrics (when required)
  • a digital visa will replace the visa sticker.

Standard Tourist Visa for Bali Indonesia

To get rid of some confusion right from the start.

This Visit Visa is also known as Visa on Arrival or VoA. However, the name is misleading because it can be purchased already online BEFORE your arrival (advisable). The term was used, before online purchase was available. To get the visa upon arrival is also still possible if you missed getting it online before you arrive.  The official Visa Code is B1, B2, B3 and B4.

The 30days Visit Visa is available for 90+ nationalities.

Application – Price – Validity – Must Know

Visit visa for bali, indonesia (also known as visa on arrival, voa & e-voa), faq visit visa / visa on arrival, both, the visit visa is also called visa on arrival (or voa). .

Since Indonesia implemented an option to get the Visa online, it is (was) also called e-VoA.

90+ nationalities can now get a 30days Visit Visa.

When applying online you must select the type of "Visa on Arrival" based on your travel purpose:

Most travelers to Bali who can get a Visit Visa will have to apply for the B1.

B1 - Tourist Purpose

  • Conducting activities related to tourism, and visiting friends or family.
  • Participate in meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions as an attendee.
  • Traveling in Indonesia on a yacht (yachter).

B2 - Business Purpose

  • Carry out activities related to business, meetings, or purchase of goods including but not limited to checking goods at the office, factory, or production site of goods.
  • Discuss, negotiate, and/or sign business contracts.

B3 - Medical Vist

  • conducting activities related to medical treatment.

B4 - Government related

  • Conducting activities related to Government Business.

This is how you can apply for the Indonesia Tourist Visa / Visa on Arrival:

1. electronic visa on arrival (e-voa - b1, b2, b3, b4).

You can apply and purchase the Visa already online and avoid queuing at VoA counters at the airport which will save you time and is much more convenient.

You can apply for e-VOA 14 days before your travel. However, you are advised to create an e-VOA request at least 48 hours before your departure, otherwise you might not receive it in time. The Visa is not issued instantly!

Make sure you check your Spamfolder when you expect to receive emails. ONLY follow the official link below and get your Visa from the immigration website. There are plenty of scammers out there.

2. At the Airport / Harbour upon arrival in Indonesia

If you do not purchase the e-VoA before you arrive in Indonesia online, you can still purchase the Visa at the VoA counters at international airports in the arrival halls (or at harbours, if you arrive by boat or cruise ship). Expect long queues at times.

The documents needed for your Visa applications are:

When you purchase upon arrival at the airport or harbour.

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months on date of arrival (no exceptions!)
  • Return ticket (or outbound of Indonesia)
  • Cash or Credit Card

When you purchase the Visa online BEFORE arrival:

a. Full biodata page of passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of your arrival to Indonesia; b. Passport size photograph; c. Email address; d. A valid Mastercard, Visa, or JCB credit card. e. Residence information in Bali / Indonesia (hotel etc) f. Return or outbound Ticket

Yes, you do need a return ticket, that matches the validity of your Visa.

It can happen that they might not ask to show the return ticket.

It might also happen, that the immigration officers will ask you. And if you don't have a return ticket, they will make you purchase one right and won't let you enter Indonesia with out a return ticket (or a ticket that takes you outside of Indonesia).

YES - regardless of their age. Also infants.

The Visit Visa (VoA) is valid for 30 days initially.

The Visa can be extended ONLY ONCE for another 30 days.

So after 60 days you MUST leave the country. You can not apply for another Visa while you are in Indonesia..

Note: Day of arrival and day of departure count as FULL days each.

There are two ways to extend the Visa on Arrival:

1. ONLINE: If you purchased the Visa ONLINE , you can also extend the visa ONLINE but on the immigration website where you got the visa in the first place ( Imigrasi ). For that you need the login to the account that you created when you applied for the Visa.

2. OFFLINE: If you purchased the Visa in person upon arrival and not pnline you need to apply for a 30days extension i n person at an immigration office . We strongly suggest you work with a Visa Agent to get this done.

Details of the Process, Visa Agent Application and agent price for extension

If you got the Visa online but somehow don't manage to get an extension online (technical issues), then you can also get an extension offline of course.

The cost is IDR 500,000 (ca. USD 35 / AUD 50) per person

  • Online Purchase (e-VoA) per credit card on the (extra fees might apply) OFFICIAL immigration website
  • Purchase at the airport arrival hall (or harbour) and pay at the VoA counter in cash (EUR, GBP, AUD, USD, SGD, IDR) or by credit card (no AMEX)

Visas are based on your PASSPORT & NATIONALITY. Residency permits of other countries are NOT considered.

If you don't have a passport but a Titre de Voyage, Refugee Travel Document or similar travel documents, you would need to apply for a B211A Visa. Information and Application

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do.

The entire online application service for the Visa on Arrival for Bali is handled 100% by the immigration department. If you run into problems, this is what they said on their website:

"Kindly inform the e-VOA Support Desk (livechat at www.imigrasi.go.id or sending email to [email protected] or [email protected]) should you encounter any suspended or unsuccessful transactions during the request procedure."

Sometimes confirmation emails land in your spam folder, that's the first thing you should check.

Their website seems to be changing rather frequently, and sometimes some features seem to not work on all browsers equally well. What we noticed is, that if you tried to extend a visa and the process failed, it seems you have to then wait one more day to see the extension option again.

Worse case, if the application fails, you can still get the Visa upon arrival in the arrival hall of the airport (Visa on Arrival).

No , you cannot enter multiple times into Indonesia with this Visa.

The visa on arrival is only a single entry visa. if you leave indonesia and want to come back, you need to apply for a new visit visa..

Officials have now installed new digital Entry Gates to get through the immigration in Bali. There are still counters with Immigration Officers in the arrival hall. But with your e-Visa you can get through the immigration using the electronic gates (if they are working and the officials will not guide you towards the counters with immigration officers.

At the electronic gates, you will scan your passport and once you are through you will receive per email an e-KTE, your Visa Stay Permit. It's a PDF that acknowledges your arrival.

Because you will not get a stamp in your passport anymore if you use the e-Gate the system will register your arrival electronically.

If you purchased your Visa upon Arrival (not online) you will can not use the electronic gates and must go to a counter with an immigration officer.

YOU CANNOT GET ANOTHER VISA AFTER YOU HAVE EXTENDED the visa on arrival ONCE (max. 60 days in total), while you are in Indonesia. You would have to leave the country and come pack.

If you want to stay longer than 60 days, you have to get a B211A OFFSHORE Visit Visa (60days) before your arrival first, which is valid for 60 days and which can be extended twice, each extension is valid for another 60 days (total max. 180 days, before you have to leave the country).

B211A Visa Application Service

If you overstay your visa, you have  to pay a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day. If you overstayed substantially you might be detained, deported, or banned from coming back to Indonesia for a specific period.

There are several travel regulations you must be aware of which you can find here: Bali Entry Regulations

Note: If you intend to rent a scooter or motorbike you will need to bring your local driving license AND and international driving license. The traffic police has made several statements lately that they will control more often and will issue fines.

If you don't have an international license you can get one here: International Driving License accepted by the Indonesian authorities

Department of State/AILA Liaison Committee Meeting March 20, 2024

The Secretary of State, following consultations with the Department of Homeland Security, has determined that the following categories of interview waivers are in the national interest.  Changes based on that determination are implemented by consular officers, who now have the authority and discretion to waive the in-person interview for:

  • First time H-2 visa applicants (temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers); and
  • Were previously issued a nonimmigrant visa in any classification, unless the only prior issued visa was a B visa; and
  • Are applying within 48 months of their most recent nonimmigrant visa’s expiration date.

In all cases, applicants must meet certain legal requirements to qualify for an interview waiver.  Implementation of this authority begins January 1, 2024, and will be reviewed annually.  This authority is in place until further notice.

As a reminder, applicants renewing a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification within 48 months of the prior visa’s expiration date continue to be eligible for interview waiver until further notice.

To be eligible for an interview waiver, applicants must also meet certain criteria, including that they:

  • apply in their country of nationality or residence.
  • have never been refused a visa (unless such refusal was overcome or waived).
  • have no apparent or potential ineligibility.

Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis or because of local conditions.  We encourage applicants to check embassy and consulate websites for more detailed information about visa application requirements and procedures, and to learn more about the embassy’s operating status and services.
