We decided to try the Afternoon Tea package at the Duchess' Tea Room as a treat for my elderly parents. We had heard good things about it but there are few reviews for this café in the grounds of Woburn Abbey. We booked for a... Saturday afternoon on a cold but sunny December day. The cost (£13.50) includes access to the gardens as well the tea itself. Parking is very close to the café. Despite it being cold outside, the café was warm and inviting. We were shown to a table and immediately asked if we would like some tea, coffee or drinking chocolate. The 'Afternoon Tea' consisted of finger sandwiches (smoked salmon, ham, tuna & egg), scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of cakes. There was more than enough for the four of us (we took some cakes home) and everything was delicious and very much enjoyed. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Afterwards we went for a walk around the gardens to burn off some of the calories! Even in winter it was very pleasant. You can buy vouchers for these Teas and I think they would make a nice gift. Highly recommended. More

We've had tea here a number of times during walks in the delightful parkland and its surrounds, and throughout last winter had no problem. Then came the spring, and to get into the tea-room we were asked for £6.75 each (garden admission), even though the... garden was, on this occasion, of no interest. The tea-room is perhaps 50 yards from the entrance yet might as well have been on Mars. So, if you're reading this, Your Grace, your silly demand has denied your catering department £20 or so of income. Get it organised, please. It's not difficult - though if you want my ideas you'll have to pay a consultancy fee. Until then, au revoir. (Incidentally, this is not the first example of jobsworth-style insistence on the observation of irrelevant rules that has denied the estate an income, to my certain knowledge. If staff are given a bit of discretion to use common sense it would create goodwill instead of destroying it, as well as producing income.) More

On our recent trip, we found the Duchess Tea Room to be far from user friendly.It was pouring with rain and we all dashed into the Tea Room, only to find that HALF the Tea Room, was laid out and reserved for "afternoon tea"!!!!!! We... couldnt therefore find anywhere to sit as a group of ten, and we all became very frustrated....we asked if we could sit on one of the "reserved " tables, and even offered to reset the table after we left, but we were told by the off putting manageress "its NOT allowed. She even had the nerve to suggest we sat outside!!!!!! Shocking. More

I was booked afternoon tea as a gift in the Duchess Room which with my husband we were really looking forward to - when we arrived we were taken to the Bedford room, which was cold and uninviting. We were told this is where the... booked afternoon teas are held now. As a coeliac my sandwiches and scones were actually good, but the cakes were really bad, shop bought and stale. My husbands normal afternoon tea was few and far between, small sandwiches, tiny scones and again the cakes were stale, and clearly shop bought (really sweet, bland and over processed). Additionally there were ridiculous amounts of wasps trying to land on our food that we kept having to shoo away. Other diners were having the same problem. The waiting staff were disinterested in helping. For the home of afternoon tea we were really disappointed, not worth your money and not worth your time. Steer clear! More

We booked the Duchess Tea Rooms for our mum's 90th birthday celebration, as it looked very nice on the web page... We went to the cafe where we thought it was, but we were directed to another place....there was quite a steep climb on the... way, which was difficult for my Aunty, who was in a wheelchair...it was quite a struggle to get her up there...we did get help on the way back... Arrived at the Edward Room, which was just a long room with tables...big windows, but you couldn't see anything out of them, as too high....not like the cafe, where you could see some of the grounds, shops, people etc.... It was a very stark bright white room....tables were covered with white linen table cloths, but then white paper cloths on top...2 young girls served us and they were very helpful.. there is a tea menu or coffee, if you prefer...finger sandwiches, fruit and plain scones with jam and clotted cream, variety of dainty cakes...the food was very good..my sister drinks coffee, but it was bought out in a cup, rather than a coffee pot....there were a couple of single roses in vases on the table...one of which was dead and the other had seen better days... Although the afternoon tea was good, we were disappointed in the actual room, there was no ambience, no views (we could have been anywhere), and paper table cloths..we did ask why we were in that room rather than the cafe and were told that it was too busy and changed to have the teas in the Edward Room... If you are in a wheelchair, ask for help (in the shop as you go through)...it is quite a walk from the car park as well.. More

My daughter treated me to afternoon tea. The service was excellent, the sandwiches fresh and the cakes were delightful, just 2 bites big, which is just big enough to try all. We were told we had to have tea in the Bedford room which was cold and univiting and we where looking forward to eating in the duchess suite. We had pre booked vegetarian option and the lady who served us said yes it’s all ready.... When we were served we had exactly the same as everybody else including ham sandwiches. We ended up leaving most of the items. Tea and coffee very good gardens and drive through deer park beautiful. Reading some of the recent reviews was disappointing. Visiting today with my Mum was a delight! The house and gardens were lovely but our afternoon tea in the Bedford room was the highlight. Served to us by a lovely lady called Sandra we couldn't have... been more satisfied. The room was welcoming and bright. Nice background music added to the ambience. We had afternoon tea as a present from our daughter for my wifes birthday. Having previously had afternoon tea at venues such as Fawsley Hall, Loton Hoo, The Ritz and Harrods we were expecting something similar. The illusion only lasted as long as reaching the... room where tea was served. We were told that tea was in the Bedford room and it is a cold and uninviting room which from the outside appears to be converted stables and on the interior continues the feel. The lady who served us had clearly never been through any customer service training as we were made to feel as though we were an inconvenience. The tea choices were plentiful and the tea itself was very good but the food was mediocre. There was no explanation of what was on offer and the home made scones were hard and tasteless. The cakes were limited in choice and taste and there was no offer of any refresh of the tea. Having visited many other parts of the Woburn estate and becoming accustomed to a sense of class this particular offshoot was unworthy. Not planning to visit again. Fawsley Hall is much superior. My husband bought vouchers for afternoon tea for my birthday. We decided to get to the abbey early so we could walk round the gardens before tea. Just as well as I haven't been to Woburn Abbey for a while and had forgotten the long... drive round to the car park. We thoroughly enjoyed the gardens and the whole ambience of the area around the abbey seemed more 'up market' than I remember from before. All the staff we encountered were pleasant and helpful and we liked the Bedford Room that the tea was served in. The sandwiches and scones were very nice but I was disappointed with the cakes. There was a lot of whipped cream and everything looked bland. I was expecting things like strawberry tarts, little pots of mousse, macaroons, something made of chocolate etc. It might also have been nice to be offered the option of Champagne as well. An exquisite afternoon tea at Woburn Coffee House

When it comes to people asking for recommendations, “where is the best brunch :” and “what is the best afternoon tea” are probably my most asked questions! Well, today I have a recommendation for an excellent afternoon tea in the historic town of Woburn, just on the edge of Milton Keynes. I recently paid a visit to Woburn Coffee House with my Mum. It was a Christmas treat that, thanks to extended lockdowns, ended up being cashed in August! Regardless, it was absolutely worth the wait and after the wonderful reception that my Instagram post got, I thought I’d do an in-depth blog post about our experience to add to my other afternoon tea reviews on my blog.

Woburn Coffee House

It is worth saying that Woburn has historic ties with afternoon tea. Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford resided in Woburn Abbey . In around 1840, the Duchess requested that some ‘light food and a pot of tea’ be brought to her private living quarters after complaining of a ‘sinking feeling.’ The food likely included bread and butter and some sweet treats like biscuits.

The rest, as they say, is history. Because this ‘light food and a pot of tea’ soon became a routine and the Duchess began inviting friends to her private rooms for tea in the afternoon. And so a new social event was born that continues to this day!

Woburn Coffee House is located on Woburn high street (just by Loch Fyne) in a beautiful pastel blue house that dates back to the 16th century. There are four different rooms in the building where you can enjoy afternoon tea, which is only served Friday, Saturday and Sunday: the Old Restaurant, the White Room, The Snug and arguable the most stunning – The Orangery, which can be used for weddings and private events, overlooking the private walled garden.

The afternoon tea menus change seasonally, so if you go at different times of year you will experience seasonal treats! It’s worth noting that the afternoon tea is served on weekends and Friday afternoons only with set sittings that last two hours.

I booked ‘The White Room’ at Woburn Coffee House, a beautifully decorated space that definitely had a touch of Victorian England about it. The decor is in no way twee though, despite the vintage elements! In fact, it’s very tasteful with a modern twist.

As it was August, we had the summer menu, which features a range of delectable canapés with seasonal ingredients. Every canapé is handcrafted by a talented team of pastry chefs. As you can see, the presentation is stunning! A HUGE silver cake stand arrived that was almost too tall to take a photo of. It was packed with a variety of savoury and sweet bites to eat.

To add, there is also a full vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu so dietary requirements are well catered for.

We had a glass of rosé champagne which we enjoyed before our tea arrived. You get unlimited refills of your chosen tea or coffee throughout your stay. I booked the traditional afternoon tea which is £32.95 per person. There is an option to upgrade to the celebration tea (£39.95) which includes a glass of bubbles.

First, we have the savoury tiers. Everything was absolutely delicious, but the highlights for me were the wild hake, clam and sweetcorn pie topped with Duchess potatoes, the gorgonzola cheesecake and the chorizo sausage roll. The gorgonzola cheesecake in particular had such a great composition of flavour. I don’t think I’ve ever had a savoury cheesecake before! The hake and clam pie was also beautiful and I loved the creamy potatoes.

For me, this is a perfect afternoon tea because there’s not a savoury sandwich in sight! I’d much rather have a delicious array of canapés than sandwiches.

Next up was three tiers of sweet! The Lemon drizzle scones were delicious with a subtle lemon flavour that wasn’t too overpowering. The Battenburg was light, fluffy and fruity and the macaron packed a punch with raspberry and a thick chocolate ganache. My favourite was the Malibu and coconut creme brulee which also featured a spiced caramelised pineapple compote with a strawberry and butter biscuit. Totally delicious!

The Turkish delight was delicate and delicious (I took that home though, along with the Battenburg because we just couldn’t finish it!)

The service

For me, good service at a restaurant is essential and it’s the part of the experience that makes me want to go back the most (along with the food of course!) The team at Woburn Coffee House could not have been more welcoming and made sure we were topped up with tea and enjoying our food without being too overbearing throughout our stay. Although this was a Christmas gift for my Mum, it was her birthday the day before which I’d mentioned to them, so just before we’d finished our tea, they brought over a chocolate gift which had ‘Happy Birthday Mum’ on it. There were a few others in the White Room celebrating too and they all received personalised gifts, which was just a lovely touch and something that makes it all the more memorable.

Final thoughts

I can’t recommend Woburn Coffee House enough. It would make for a wonderful birthday celebration, location for a hen do, baby shower or anniversary. The food was outstanding with fantastic service to match. It is well worth a visit and I’m already looking for an excuse to go again!

A visit to Woburn Abbey, the home of the English Duchess who started the afternoon tea tradition.

An afternoon at Woburn Abbey sprawled deliciously before us, as did a two-mile drive through the Deer Park to reach the Abbey. The autumn leaves glittered against a deep blue sky, the doe and stag nonchalantly turning their heads to watch us pass them – what an incredible welcome, both now and if we’d been arriving in a carriage 200 years ago. We spied the Abbey through the gaps in the trees after we’d stopped to allow a herd of deer (there are nine species freely roaming the park) to dash across the road. It felt like we were on a very English safari.

Woburn Abbey was originally founded in 1145 as a Cistercian monastery and abbey. In 1538 it was seized by the Crown during the Reformation and has been in the Russell family since 1547 after it was gifted to Sir John Russell, the First Earl of Bedford, in Henry VIII’s will. The Abbey is still home to the 15th Duke of Bedford and his family.

We took a stroll around a few of the 28 acres of gardens: we conquered the 1833 Hornbeam maze – complete with Chinese pagoda at the centre – after discovering a ready-to-play croquet set on the lawn; climbed the Rockery, peered into the Aviary, and walked past trees which have seen many Earls and Dukes walk beneath them. The 5th Duke Francis began great improvements to the garden and house after returning from his Grand Tour of Europe in 1787, and Henry Holland was commissioned to build the indoor riding school and tennis court (both now gone due to dry rot), the Chinese Dairy and the Conservatory (known today as the Sculpture Gallery). The 6th Duke continued his brother’s work by commissioning garden designer Humphry Repton to produce designs for improving the gardens and park, his ideas written and illustrated in Repton’s 1804 ‘Red Book’. Many of the gardens’ features today are based on Repton’s original designs, as well as designs from the current gardeners.

The Duchess’ Tea Rooms are nestled in the gardens before you head into the Abbey. The Duchess herself was Anna Marie, the 7th Duchess of Bedford , who famously complained of ‘having that sinking feeling’ in the late afternoon. During the early nineteenth century, it was usual for people to take only two meals a day – breakfast and then dinner at around 8pm. The Duchess decided a pot of tea and a light snack was needed to help her through until dinner, taken in her rooms during the afternoon.

While full afternoon tea is available in the lavish Bedford Room, we settled down in the sunshine to eat generous and delicious slices of homemade honey, orange and parsnip cake – the parsnips grown in the the kitchen garden of the Abbey – squidgy lemon cake, and a gluten free and vegan harvest apple cake.

Woburn Abbey itself is grand room after grand room of history, family legacy and incredible art. The family have one of the most important private art collections in the world and as a visitor you can see pieces which you would expect to view in the National Portrait Gallery or National Gallery. The 4th Duke started the collection which now consists of 12 paintings by Joshua Reynolds, three by Gainsborough, paintings by Hogarth, Lely, Tintoretto and 10 by Van Dyck. The Dining Room alone has 21 Venetian views by Canaletto bought by the 4th Duke while on the Grand Tour in the 18th century, an incredible room which left me feeling elegant just by standing in it.

Rembrandt’s ‘Portrait of an Old Man’ has been part of the collection since 1791 when it was noted in Abbey records as being cleaned, but it could have arrived at the Abbey earlier. The Long Gallery, where originally over one hundred portraits hung, hosts Gower’s 1588 painting ‘The Armada Portrait’ of Queen Elizabeth I, one of the most famous portraits of the monarch in the world.

Of course, the house itself is a work of art, even though it has been rebuilt and restored, remodelled and redecorated many times since the Russell family moved in during the 16th Century. Walking from room to room we marvelled at the rich colours, fabrics, care taken in restoration and details in the design. The State Saloon is simply incredible with its vaulted ceiling and dramatic views in either direction across the grounds, with Roland Pym’s 1970’s mural around the walls showing the interests of the Russell family over the years.

The Blue Drawing Room, lined with an exact paper copy of the original blue silk wall-hanging, is where the ladies would go for tea. While looking at the extensive porcelain collection in another part of the house, I couldn’t help but imagine which pieces Anna Marie and her guests would have used over the years.

Woburn is also known for another famous Duchess – The Flying Duchess. Mary was the wife of the 9th Duke of Bedford and after considerable efforts as a nurse during the First World War, where parts of the Abbey were turned into wards, she took up flying at the age of 61. After setting out to complete 200 hours of solo flying, Mary disappeared.

In the Queen’s Bedroom, the room Queen Victoria stayed in during her visit to the Abbey in 1841, there are some fine sketches by the Queen and Prince Albert. They were a gift to Anna Marie, wife of the 7th Duke, who had been one the monarch’s ladies-in-waiting.

There are too many rooms to give credit to here, each one full of splendour and elegance – there is a Grotto decorated entirely by shells; the crypt holds the extensive gold and silver collections; the Racing Room and the Chinese Rooms, the Holland Library designed by Henry Holland during his redevelopment of the south wing.

Woburn Abbey may have 400 years of history, but it has first and foremost been a home. The current Duke’s toast rack collection is on display in the Dukes’ Corridor which is lined with portraits of the Dukes’ through the years. The Breakfast Room really is a breakfast room, the Dining Room used recently for her Grace’s birthday celebrations. Old portraits may line the walls but photographs of the current Duke’s family stand on the furniture. The guides also help to create a welcoming atmosphere to the house with their friendly smiles as they pass on their knowledge and enjoyment of the Abbey – we even heard a whispered story of the current Duke skateboarding through the State Saloon when he was a child!

The Abbey has been open to the public since 1955 so it’s high time it has a rest from its duties – the Abbey will be undergoing extensive renovation from August 2019 and will reopen in the Spring of 2024. The gardens are as busy and bustling as the Abbey, with talks and walks, Shows, floral art study days and planting lessons so when you book a visit – and an afternoon tea – after the renovations are complete, be sure to enjoy Woburn Abbey outside as well as in.
