Last week, The Bodhi Spa co-founders and sisters Cedar Hwang and Harmony Oschefski opened the doors of a new location at 186 Broadway in Providence. In the midst of a pandemic, the path to launching the hydrotherapy spa – known for its unique Water Journey – in historic Federal Hill was long, hard-fought, and put them close to bankruptcy.

What’s Up Newp had a chance to chat with the sisters about their new venture and the challenges they faced to stay open in Newport and launch in Providence this year. Read on for the full interview.

water journey rhode island

When did your Providence location officially open and what are your current hours?

We did a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, October 21st. Mayor Elorza was there as well as a representative from Senator Jack Reed’s office. We’ve fallen in love with the local community. We’re very grateful to have had really great partners and to have received such a warm welcome from the community.

We’ve started with decreased hours we will eventually ramp up to match our Newport hours (8 am – 9 pm) as we get more bookings and are able to hire more.

Tell us about how the pandemic impacted your business and the opening of your new location.

We were visiting a ski resort to talk about expanding Bodhi Spa to one of their locations, and it was on the car on the drive back that we made the call to shut down. That was on March 16 th . We didn’t officially reopen until July 5th.  We estimate we lost about $600,000 in revenue during that time.

We wouldn’t have been able to get our doors open if not for Jack Reed advocating for us. Getting our Newport location re-opened was no small miracle. We petitioned for months. We reached out to every government official that was willing to hear us. No one knew what to do with us because we were so unique. We petitioned the Department of Business Regulations, CommerceRI, Congressman Cicilline, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Senator Jack Reed. Through the National Hot Springs Business & Trade Association, we had a contact at the Alaska Governor’s office. We had them contact Governor Raimondo’s office to open up communication between us there.  Everyone was great at getting back to us, but no one really knew what to do with us because we’re such a unique business.

After we re-opened in Newport, no new pool applications were being looked at by the Department of Health because they were so overwhelmed managing COVID. So, we had to take a breather for a bit and just enjoy being open in Newport again.  Then, we had to hit the ground running in August and start petitioning again. We were not getting approved for the pool plan – which our whole business is based around. We only got our licenses as of 12pm on Friday (October 22nd) and we opened up on Saturday, the very next day.  The only reason we got them was because we had the power of Senator Jack Reed’s petitioning for us, making phone calls, and the governor’s office coming to check us out. It was a very arduous journey to get here and we came very close to going bankrupt. Our loans were coming to fruition and our banks were not extending any more time to us.

What safety precautions and considerations have you made?

We want people to know that we’re not being unsafe by opening; we do things differently. We have a hygiene hostess dedicated to making sure people are social distancing, wearing their masks, and sweeping and cleaning every 15 minutes. We submitted a 16-17 page re-opening plan with many protocols to explain how we were going to re-open safely and in the right way. We worked with companies from all over North America as well as the Global Wellness Institute and National Hot Springs Business & Trade Association, to pick up different ideas on how to re-open. Because we’re the only ones like us in New England, we needed to learn from these other businesses how to safely open large bodies of water. From our collection of ideas, we were able to assemble and submit our comprehensive plan.  Because we did so much research and tweaking of our protocols, we’ve been able to safely re-open.

What’s different between the new Providence location and the Newport location?

The Providence location is an evolvement. In Providence, we realized we needed more space, so it’s twice as big as the Newport location. It feels like it’s been designed a bit more thoughtfully because we had the space, and we were able to take a lot of guest feedback into consideration. We created a relaxation area that’s separate from the Water Journey, and a direct entrance from the locker room to the Water Journey space, so you don’t have to go into a public area in your towel or bathing suit on your way there. The pool at this location also a waterfall that you can rinse off in.

Eventually, we are going to have a float with a relaxing, sensory deprivation experience. It’s a very dark, quiet room where you don’t see or hear anything. You float on 8-12 inches of water that has 200 lbs of dead sea salt dissolved in it, so you’re extremely buoyant. It gives you the feeling of weightlessness, combined with no light or sound, gives you a deep, extremely relaxing experience.

Otherwise, the spa treatment menu in Providence is the same as Newport.

Are you currently hiring?

We’ve been hiring and training for the past month. It’s amazing to be able to offer new jobs during this time. We needed staff and be able to open and ready immediately and we were able to do that because we were able to support the process with our Newport location. We needed a month to hire and train properly – it’s such an important part of our business and to keep people safe. Our 16-17 page list of protocols is a lot of training and takes a while to get through.

Any plans for further expansion?

We’re still in talks with the ski resort, which we’ll be visiting again hopefully this winter as long as coronavirus allows for us to visit safely. There is still a strong interest on both sides, but will probably be a while before we can plan anything.  We’ve also talked about potentially expanding to Connecticut or Massachusetts.

The Bodhi Spa is now booking appointments at their Providence location 11am-6pm. Street parking and as well as a public paid parking lot are available nearby.

Just magical! The water journey is such a fantastic and unique experience. My husband and I loved all of the options with the different temperature hot/cold pools, sauna, and steam rooms. With so many spots and the indoor/outdoor option, no one area ever felt too crowded. Truly such a luxurious treat for 2 1/2 hours. Our afternoon ended perfectly with a massage before going out for dinner.

I went for the water journey. I would love to do it again soon. I found the price very reasonable. It was 2.5 hours which was a little long for me. However it's very relaxing and there's cucumber and lemon water available to drink. The changing room is very nice. It has everything you need to get ready like shower, shampoos, blow dryer, ect. Also you get robes and slippers. The slippers look like they need to be replaced. They are not comfortable and look dingy. Other than that very good experience.

My first time at Bodhi Spa in Newport and I will definitely return. From the moment I got there, I felt so welcome. The spa was so clean and calming. I had the best facial from Katie. She was warm, friendly and so professional. I looked and felt great when I left.

A lovely, calm space. Service here is top-notch and worth every penny. You're treated like royalty as soon as you walk in. Their facials are such a treat. Massages are lovely. Little perks like robes, sandals, cucumber water, and fresh towels in the bathroom make this spot stand out from the rest. I wish I could live here.

Relaxation at its finest!! My boyfriend and I went to the Bodhi Spa in Newport for a couples massage and water journey. Both of our massages were amazing! Both massage therapists Jayne and Rob did a great job relaxing our muscles and making us feel very comfortable. I get massages once a month and have been to some great spas but my massage at the Bodhi Spa has been one of the best I have had! After having all my muscles relaxed and the knots worked out we headed in for the Water Journey. I would recommend the Water Journey to anyone, even if you don't like massages you can go just for the water therapy part. My boyfriend and I had the place to ourselves for the first 30 min and then other people stared coming in. Even with a few other people there the space was not crowded at all and you could still get to all the pools and saunas and it stayed quiet. They let you take your time in the water therapy area, we spent a little over 2 hours there. The sauna in the Zen garden was amazing and I loved being able to go out and enjoy the zen garden area! The spa was clean, quiet and the staff was very nice and accommodating. I would recommend this spa to anyone looking for a relaxing day

water journey rhode island

i really enjoyed the water journey, and the outdoor zen garden puts this place over the top. i didn't want to leave! I loved the steam room. the aromatherapy was just that. I stayed as long as I could. I hope to get a massage next visit along with the water journey. i can't imagine things being even better than they were but I look forward for the combined experience next visit. i also left my Apple Watch behind and, not that I recommend being as irresponsible as I was, but they worked with me to secure it and make sure I got it back. i appreciate the extra effort they made on their end for my error. i will be returning, question is when! ps i finally conquered my cold water plunge fear and went for it... one of the best feelings my body has ever experienced.

Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled you conquered your cold water plunge fear and had such a fantastic experience. Looking forward to your next visit!

Unfortunately I can't speak to the spa services. I haven't been able to get in touch with a real person when I call the Newport location. I have, however, received several texts from the "concierge" but no actual call. The response I received to my text inquiry was, "we're fully committed." I asked the concierge for a live call to discuss options, she said she would call after a certain time. But, they never called. I've never come across this model for trying to book a service, and I'm sorry to say I didn't feel like my business is valued if I can't even get a phone call to discuss the multiple services I wanted to book. I know it's hard to discern tone via text, but I got the impression that whoever was texting me felt my inquiry was a nuisance. I was much looking forward to visiting the spa, but if a phone call is too much to ask of the receptionist, then I guess I'll have to try another spa.

Thank you for your honest feedback. We apologize for the inconvenience you faced during your experience. We are actively retraining our staff to enhance response times and ensure dedicated communication with our valued guests. Your input helps us grow and provide a better experience for guests. Thank you!

Great Location for a Quiet Escape . This was my first time at Bodhi; I enjoyed my time at this spa while relaxing & resting. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Once you check in you are given a mini tour along with access to your locker with your robe & slippers , you can also keep your personal belongings in the locker as you're given a key to which will be taken with you into the spa . I enjoyed this spa was bikini attire compared to some nude only spas ; The sauna rooms where my favorite they had different temperatures & special treatments from uv, aromatherapy, etc . The pools were wonderful as you are given 3 different temperatures to pick from starting from hot to cold or vice versa the choice . This was a very tranquil experience which I would definitely recommend if needing a day of self care & silence; I wish it had more amenities but overall I'd give this location 7.5/10 just because I've been to other spas that had more variety

The Bodhi Spa, Newport, RI

From the moment you walk in, you’ll quickly notice the peaceful ambience that surrounds the Bodhi Spa. Visitors love the spa’s water journey, reminiscent of a Japanese bathhouse, which guides you from room to room with different types of pools and saunas that detoxify and rejuvenate your body.

Citron Spa, Providence, RI

The break, narragansett, ri.

The Break is Narragansett’s first boutique hotel, with a self-described “retro-chic surf vibe.” That same energy fills their spa—an ideal spot to put your body at ease. The Spa at Newport Marriott, Newport, RI

This all-inclusive spa is perfect for an individual day of treating yourself, couples’ services or a girl’s day out. The spa was recently renovated, making it an even more beautiful setting for enjoying a massage, getting a manicure, and maybe even taking a nap in one of their great relaxation rooms in between.

Spa Mosaic, Wakefield, RI

Want to spoil yourself? Spa Mosaic is South County’s best location for waxing, facials, and massages. Their staff will take care of you from beginning to end. Locals love their salon, too, and have come to rely upon it as the only location they trust with their hair.

Receiving a Service

1. Reservations We recommend booking your spa appointments in advance to ensure desired times, services and providers are available. All appointments must be guaranteed with a valid credit card. Spa appointments are reserved specifically for you, so we ask that you give us 24 hours advanced notice should you need to change or cancel your appointment. A fifty percent charge will be applied to appointments that are cancelled or changed within 24 hours of the treatment. Failure to arrive for a scheduled treatment will result in a charge equal to the full value of the treatment.

2. Requesting your therapist preference If you prefer either a male or female therapist, don’t hesitate to let your choice be known at the time of booking. Also, if you have enjoyed the services of a particular therapist on a prior visit, feel free to request that person. We are here to accommodate.

3. Communicating with your Therapist Be sure to speak up. Your therapist will do their absolute best to accommodate your requests such as: amount of light, volume level (or absence) of music, table temperature, and whether or not you choose to have a conversation or enjoy the treatment in silence. If you want the therapist to give you more pressure, or be lighter with the touch, let him or her know. Also, feel free to ask questions. Your therapist will enjoy knowing your thoughts and clarifying any issues you may have. If any part of your experience is unsatisfactory, first tell the therapist. If the response isn’t helpful, speak to the concierge or manager if available.

4. Punctuality Ideally arrive for your service 15 minutes early so you can enjoy an unhurried transition into the spa. If you are late, your treatment time will be shortened. After a treatment, it’s customary to vacate the room within five or ten minutes, though you are welcome to spend additional time unwinding in the spa’s relaxation area or Zen Garden in our Newport Location.

5. Gratuities Gratuities are not included in your service price. Typically, 15- 20 percent is customary, however you may of course leave more or less, depending on the quality of the service. You may leave the tip at the concierge desk when you pay your bill or hand it directly to the therapist.

6. Prenatal Services • Facials are OK – all natural, organic Eminence facials may be enjoyed during all three trimesters of your pregnancy. • Massage and Body Treatments are limited to the second trimester. The first trimester carries an increased risk of complications to expectant mothers. There are pressure points in the body that are thought to initiate contractions or potentially induce labor. In addition, it is difficult to assess a client without their full maternal medical history. For these reasons we don’t offer massages in the first trimester.

Couple who found pearl inside clam, turned it into engagement ring discuss wedding journey

R hode Island lovebirds who found a pearl inside a clam and turned it into an engagement ring are one step closer to lifelong bliss, they shared with USA TODAY.

Ken Steinkamp and Sandy Sikorski live in Westerly, Rhode Island and on December 27, 2021, they grabbed clams at Bridge Restaurant, which is now closed.

Sikorski was eating one of the clams when she tasted something a bit off. It turned out to be a pearl and a year-and-a-half later, the couple turned the pearl into an engagement ring.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Their story made its rounds online and in multiple news outlets, turning them into celebrities of sorts.

The pair said sometimes people see her ring and bring up the story of how they found the pearl.

“I am surprised every single time somebody says ‘I know about this ring,’” Sikorski said. “It’s hard to go unnoticed because it's white and people are looking for a diamond. “

Now, the couple has secured a venue and plans to tie the knot on April 14.

Read more to find out what the couple has been up to and how they’re tying their previous find into their nuptials.

Read more on the couple: She found a pearl inside of a clam. Now, it's her engagement ring.

Ceremony will be intimate at a Rhode Island resort

Steinkamp, 75, and Sikorski, 70, will wed at Avondale Chapel, then have their reception at Ocean House, a resort a few miles away in Watch Hill.

They opted for a small ceremony due to costs and family circumstances.

“We chose a small wedding because of the age we are and I don’t think we have 200 friends that could ever get here,” the groom said.

They spotted the chapel where they’ll say “I do” as they were headed out for their nightly drive, he said. They drive each night and watch the sunset. Off on this side road lies Avondale Chapel. It was built in the 1800s.

“It’s very cute and very small,” Steinkamp said.

They decided to tie the ocean and the chapel into their wedding plans and now, they’re all set to have a boutique ceremony with about 27 people.

Boutique weddings are in right now, said Hannah Bontempo, the catering and sales manager at Ocean House who is helping the couple make their wedding happen. They are typically smaller in size and made up of about 30 or fewer guests.

“It's a smaller event, so it's not a giant ballroom,” she said. “It's not a giant tent. It's not like a crazy, long, drawn out ceremony. It's more intimate. It's more designed to be for the couple and for their love and their story.”

Making pearls a part of the festivities

The couple plans to have pearls around the base of their wedding cake. The bride will also wear pearl earrings and her granddaughter, Nora, will be a junior bridesmaid and have pearls on her shoes.

They had a wedding cake tasting on March 2 at Ocean House, where Chef Jessica Quiet prepared a chocolate clam with a pearl inside. The chocolate was delicious, Sikorski said.

“I had shared the story of their ring,” said Bontempo, the catering and sales manager at Ocean House.  “I was sharing that with our pastry chef so when they came for their cake tasting, she wanted to make it a little bit more special for them.”

She said with each couple she works with, she likes to get details and hear their love stories to give their ceremonies that personal touch.

“I have to say that that pastry was kind of above and beyond,” she said.

The bride and groom have also curated the perfect playlist to celebrate their union on the 14th.

They plan to sway to Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately” for their first dance and later, they’ll feature songs by artists such as Bruno Mars.

Wedding will be something fun for everyone, bride and groom say

Steinkamp and Sikorski said the wedding will be momentous for them but also for family and friends.

It has been a tough time for them because her mother passed away a few years ago and her father, Louis Bald, is 93 and has had some health issues. He is determined to live longer and attend the wedding though.

Sikorski wants her father to walk her down the aisle and he has been in and out of the hospital. They’ll see if he can walk with a cane, she said.

“He said ‘I’m not going to miss it,’” Sikorski recalled.

Her husband-to-be said part of the planning involved making sure her father is taken care of.

“One of the challenges of doing this is not only the cost and the timing but it's the organization around her father,” he said. It's the coordination of that and allowing us some time away. Sandy's been because she's the oldest, she's been the main caretaker for mother and father for many years.”

The couple will marry on a Sunday and the next day, they’ll fly out to Europe for three weeks. They want to go to Paris since Sikorski  has never been and French is her native language.

Family members have stepped in to take care of her father so the couple can travel.

Her father is so excited about the wedding, she said. He asks them all the time about the wedding plans and can’t wait to see it come to fruition.

“All weddings are a family affair,” Steinkamp said. “This little smaller wedding has been very special in that regard because it does bring a little light into the picture.”

'This is a Hallmark story if there ever was one'

Prior to meeting in 2018, both of them had been married and divorced. They joined the same dating app and one day, she got a notification that he was nearby. She wanted to message him but her membership had lapsed, so she renewed it and introduced herself.

The couple found the pearl in December 2021 and on July 6, 2023, he proposed to her.

Both Steinkamp and Sikorski are thrilled to tie the knot and travel after. They can’t help but smile when reflecting on their journey to get to this point.

“This is a Hallmark story if there ever was one,” Steinkamp said.

Chinese billionaire gets time served, leaves country after New York, Rhode Island straw donor scheme

A Chinese billionaire has been sentenced to time served in connection with a scheme to funnel illegal straw donations to politicians' campaigns in New York and Rhode Island

A Chinese billionaire who pleaded guilty to funneling illegal straw donations to politicians' campaigns in New York and Rhode Island was sentenced Thursday to time served and quickly left the country as part of his deal with prosecutors to forfeit his green card.

Hui Qin, 56, a Chinese film magnate with homes in Manhattan and Long Island, appeared in federal court in Central Islip, New York, and was sentenced to seven months in prison — matching the time he had served in pretrial detention since his arrest in October. He later was taken to an airport and boarded a plane to an undisclosed location, his lawyer said.

Qin pleaded guilty in March to illegally making campaign contributions in the names of others, immigration fraud and production of a false identification document. He admitted using his fortune to recruit and reimburse people who made political donations on his behalf, starting with a New York City race in 2021 — when Mayor Eric Adams was elected.

Federal prosecutors never named the politicians whose campaigns received the straw donations. U.S. Attorney Breon Peace's office said they were a candidate for New York City political office, a U.S. representative on Long Island and a candidate for a Rhode Island congressional district seat.

Prosecutors said the straw donors contributed about $11,600 to the campaigns on Qin's behalf without the campaigns' knowledge.

“Qin’s brazen flouting of our political and immigration systems, and his defrauding government agencies resulted in a felony conviction, prison sentence and today, his removal from the United States,” Peace said in a statement.

Qin's lawyer, Henry Mazurek, said Qin got on a plane to leave the country later in the day. He declined to say where Qin was going. He said his client looked forward to rebuilding his life.

“I have no doubts that he will soon regain prominence in international business, and he has a good future ahead of him,” Mazurek said in a phone interview. “And it is unfortunate that the U.S. government decides that he will have to build that career someplace else, because he has always been a philanthropist, a legitimate businessman who has done a lot of good here in Long Island and New York.”

Mazurek said Qin “just wanted to participate as a citizen could” in election s, but was not able to contribute to candidates he supported because he was not a citizen. He said the campaigns did not know about the straw donors scheme.

Qin was previously included on the Forbes list of billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion from his stake in film and entertainment companies, including the Honk Kong-based SMI Culture.

According to campaign finance records, Qin donated $2,000 to Adams in March 2021. Under the city’s campaign finance rules, green card-holders can contribute to races and participate in the city’s generous matching funds program, which caps donations at $2,100. A lawyer for Adams has said the mayor had no knowledge of the scheme.

Nine months after the donation to Adams, federal prosecutors said Qin began working “to find individuals to make more than $10,000 in straw donor contributions” to an unnamed New York City candidate.

At least one person donated $1,000 on Qin’s behalf on Dec. 9, according to prosecutors. The following day, Qin spoke with an unnamed co-conspirator, who told him they expected to be able to obtain up to $20,000 in straw donor contributions for the candidate.

Adams, a Democrat, is currently facing a federal investigation for his fundraising practices. He has said his campaign followed the law on fundraising.

Prosecutors say Qin engaged in two other straw donor schemes.

Federal Elections Commission records show Qin donated $2,900 in 2022 to the campaign of Allan Fung, a Republican former mayor who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Rhode Island. Fung did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Thursday.

Records also show that a man named Jonathan Chau, who provided Adams’ transition committee with $1,000 on December 9, 2021, gave $5,800 to a committee supporting Fung, and $2,900 to a committee backing Rep. Andrew Garbarino, a Long Island Republican. An email message seeking comment was sent to a Garbarino staffer.

Also as part of the case, Qin admitted to filing a false application for lawful permanent residency status in the U.S. in 2019 by falsely claiming he never used an alias, and fraudulently obtaining a Florida driver's license when he lived in New York.

Water Journey on land

This day spa has almost all the ingredients for perfecting a full relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The journey with its combination of water elements, hot salted jacuzzis, cold plunge, eucalyptus steam room, traditional and/ or infrared saunas lends to stree reduction of the mind and muscles. Drinking water available for hydrating and a tasteful clock for time. The only element not conducive with the "intended" tranquil setting were the chatty women groups, not using their indoor voices in the Visably Posted Quiet Zones took away from the opportunity for complete serenity through this water journey on land. Towels, robes & slippers provided, although one shower in women's locker room not working. Reception unable to deal with more than one client at a time....do not mind waiting, but no eye contact or recognition was given. The owners have done a great job, always room for improvement with an eye to customer service and maintenance. The journey continues........

Dear Ach1233, Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We can't tell you how much we appreciate your suggestions on improving the Water Journey. We have a system in place to aid the concierge when more than one guest arrives, however it is clear that more attention from management needs to be placed on this so it is not overlooked in the future, and all of our guests are greeted personally with warm smiles upon immediate arrival. I can also assure you that we are working on enforcing a strict "spa voice" policy once entering the spa and for the duration of the visit. I completely understand how it can disrupt the relaxing state of peace and tranquility that we are working to provide our guests. I can assure you that this will be a hot topic at our next team meeting. We hope to see you in the future where you can see how your suggestions have helped to improve the experience. Many thanks, Harmony Oschefski

Girls weekend wouldn't be complete without a perfect afternoon at the Bodhi Spa. The crew at Bodhi really know how to treat their guests. We will be back again and again!

Love this spa!. We got massages and did the "Water Journey" - hydrotherapy with salt pools, saunas, steam room, cold plunge pool, etc. They offer half-price on the Water Journey if you book one of their treatments which was a good deal and you get access to it for the entire day. Super clean facility. The entire staff was really nice and welcoming. I would definitely go back here.

Myself and my boyfriend went for the journey adventure following up with a massage. It was an amazing experience and we would highly recommend it! What a fun thing to do as a couple! Tranquil, serene, impeccably clean and the staff i is amazing!

Booked a couples massage for my husband and I to celebrate his birthday. The facility has private rooms, locker rooms, the spa amenities room, and a resting area. The location of the facility is at the quieter end of Thames Street and only street parking is available. We decided to upgrade the massages to the Bodhi massages and we were not disappointed. The masseuses were excellent and checked in to see how we were throughout the service. Since we had booked a service, we were able to use the additional spa amenities at half price (Water Journey). We arrived an hour early and were able to relax prior to the services. After the services we were able to return back to the amenities and stay as long as we liked. We went during slow season and there were at most 3 other couples in the amenities room with us. When we arrived, there was no one there so we had the place to ourselves. I could see this place getting crowded and people being frustrated with the size. Overall we had an excellent experience and we will definitely be returning.

I went here for a 1/2 day yoga retreat. The spa would be 5 star, but for the fact that the room for hydro therapy seemed a little cramped. That is the only downside, and it's not much of a downside at that! The staff is extremely kind. The facilities were very clean. My hydro therapy experience was great! Very relaxing and refreshing. The spa carries a nice organic line of skin care. There is a lovely outdoor area to sit back and enjoy the sunshine. The facility is nicely decorated and envokes some serious serenity! Enjoy!

Two RI state beaches are opening early this year. Will the weather cooperate?

Beach lovers can get an early start to the season with the opening of two state beaches this weekend..

PROVIDENCE − Two state beaches, Scarborough North  and  Roger Wheeler  in Narragansett, will get an early start on the season by opening this weekend, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

Weather permitting, the beaches will be open Saturday and Sundays until Memorial Day weekend, when they and other state beaches open full-time for the summer, according to the DEM.

The DEM will have lifeguards on duty, and bathrooms and amenities will be open on weekends at both beaches starting May 11.

More: How to go to the beach for free before the season (mostly) starts on Memorial Day

Will the Rhode Island weather cooperate?

Judging from the weather forecast, only the hardiest, most passionate beach lovers will show up this weekend.

Saturday looks mostly sunny, but the high temperature in Narragansett will reach only about 57 degrees, and the wind will blow from the northeast at 10 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday should be mostly cloudy with a high near 55 and a northeast wind shifting to come from the south, the weather service says.

The water temperature is about 51 degrees.

How much does it cost to go to the beach?

The state is urging beachgoers to buy their parking passes early.

DEM Director Terry Gray said, "The more beachgoers who buy their parking passes ahead of time, the faster we'll all be able to get on our beautiful beaches during the busy summer ahead."

Passes can be bought online at www.beachparkingri.com. Passes can also be purchased in person at the  Scarborough South State Beach overflow lot this weekend from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., next weekend during the same hours and then Monday through Friday starting May 28 through Aug. 9. Passes can't be bought at state beach entrance booths.

Resident passes are $30, non-resident passes are $60, resident senior passes are $15, and non-resident senior passes are $30.

Daily parking fees at most state beaches are $6 for residents on weekdays and $7 on weekends and holidays. Non-residents pay $12 on weekdays and $14 on weekends and holidays.
