2024 PGA Championship money: Purse, payout breakdown, winner’s share

The PGA of America announced a record purse for the 2024 PGA Championship. Here's the payout breakdown and winner's share.

A stacked leaderboard will play for a tournament-record purse at the PGA Championship on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa lead the PGA at 15 under, with Sahith Theegala (14 under) one back and Bryson DeChambeau , Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland (13 under) two shots back.

The PGA of America announced on Saturday this year’s purse has increased to $18.5 million — a million more than last year — and the winner will take home $3.33 million. Second ($1.99 million) and third place ($1.26 million) will also earn seven figures.

When compared to golf’s others majors, the Masters had a total purse of $20 million last month. The 2023 U.S. Open was $20 million and the 2023 Open Championship $16.5 million. The Players Championship was played for $25 million back in March.

The PGA Tour’s Signature Events have a $20 million purse, and LIV Golf’s tournaments are played for $25 million, although $20 million of that is reserved for the individual competition while $5 million is for the team competition.

T he 2024 PGA Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Xander Schauffele , who earns his first major championship and eighth PGA Tour title in this event with a win at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Schauffele broke through for the major win by setting the major championship 72-hole scoring record against par, making a six-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the tournament to post 21-under 263 and win the event by a shot over Bryson DeChambeau. Schauffele's closing 65 was enough to outlast DeChambeau's 64.

Viktor Hovland finished in third place after a three-putt at the last to finish on 18-under total, three shots ahead of Collin Morikawa and Thomas Detry.

Schauffele won the $3,330,000 winner's share of the $18,500,000 purse.

PGA Championship recap notes

Schauffele earned 100 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

Schauffele earned 750 FedEx Cup points, with the PGA Tour points offered at the major championship level for this event.

A total of 78(of 156) players finished the tournament after a 36-hole cut was made in this event.

The Alabama sophomore won the 2024 The American Express at the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, California, at 29 under after a 2-under 70 on Sunday. As an amateur, Dunlap isn’t able to earn money off his win, which would have been a whopping $1.5 million. Instead, that money goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who made a birdie at the last to finish alone at 28 under. 2024 American Family Insurance Championship final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour Champions leaderboard, how much each golfer won

The 2024 American Family Insurance Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Ernie Els, who topped the PGA Tour Champions leaderboard this week with a win on the 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison, Wisconsin.

Els shot a 69 in the final round to get into a playoff with tournament host Steve Stricker on 12-under 204. Then on the first playoff hole at the par-4 18th, Stricker missed a 3-foot putt for par to extend the extra session.

Els wound up winning for the second event in a row, becoming the first player to do so on the PGA Tour Champions since Stricker.

Els won the $360,000 winner's share of the $2,400,000 purse.

American Family Insurance Championship recap notes

Els wins the 12th PGA Tour Champions title of the year, getting into the winner's circle on the 50-plus tour for the fourth time.

The money Els -- and every PGA Tour Champions player in the field -- earned is converted into Charles Schwab Cup points, with every dollar converted into two points during the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.

There is no cut on PGA Tour Champions-run events, including the major championships they run. Every pro who finished the tournament was paid.

The 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule continues in two weeks with the Dick's Open in New York.

2024 Travelers Championship one and done picks, field, sleepers: Golf predictions, expert PGA betting advice

The PGA Tour heads to Cromwell, Connecticut this week for the 2024 Travelers Championship. The final signature event gets underway on Thursday at TPC River Highlands. The players will be competing for a 2024 Travelers Championship purse of $20 million. The winner's payout is $3.6 million. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the 4-1 betting favorite in the latest 2024 Travelers Championship odds. Other top contenders in the Travelers Championship field include Xander Schauffele (15-2), Ludvig Aberg (16-1), Collin Morikawa (16-1), Viktor Hovland (22-1), Patrick Cantlay (25-1), and Hideki Matsuyama (28-1).

With One and Done pools in the final stretch for the 2024 season, nailing your picks this week is critical. Should a $3.6 million winner's share on the line, should you target one of the favorites like Scheffler or Schauffele in your one and done picks this week? Or would it make sense to target a longshot like Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, or Justin Thomas? The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks.

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The Result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

His hot steak continued at the Players Championship, where McClure again recommended using Scheffler (if was still available) and Xander Schauffele. Both players were in contention until the end, with Scheffler coming out with the win and Schauffele finishing in second place. Then, at the Valspar Championship, McClure listed Cameron Young, who finished in second place, as his top OAD pick.

More recently, at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, McClure recommended using 50-1 longshot Alex Noren in One and Done pools. Noren would go on to be in contention until the end, before finishing in third place, two strokes off the lead! And at the PGA Championship, McClure targeted Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa, who finished in third and fourth places, respectively. He targeted Morikawa again at the Memorial Tournament, where Morikawa finished second.

Finally, at last week's U.S. Open, McClure's top two one and done picks were Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy. DeChambeau finished in first place and McIlroy in second.

Top 2024 Travelers Championship One and Done picks

One of McClure's favorite OAD plays this week for the Travelers Championship is Collin Morikawa. The 27-year-old, who was recently named to the U.S. Olympic Golf Team, has been playing some of the best golf of his career as of late, with five top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. Morikawa is no stranger to finding success against elite fields and has two major championships on his career resume.

Morikawa is one of the best ball strikers in the world, and has the all around game that makes him a threat to win any tournament he enters. He is currently ranked sixth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.275), 11th in strokes gained (1.196), and 15th in strokes gained off-the-tee (0.539). The PGA Tour has created a special sponsor exemption for 15-time major champion Tiger Woods -- and Woods alone -- based on his "exceptional lifetime achievement," the tour told its members in a memo Tuesday night.

The sponsor exemption would be available for Woods to compete in the eight signature events, which feature limited fields, increased prize money and FedEx Cup points.

Woods, an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, wouldn't otherwise qualify for the signature events with $20 million purses because he isn't playing enough competitive golf after returning to the tour from serious injuries suffered in a car wreck in February 2021.

The PGA Tour policy board approved the special sponsor exemption during a joint meeting with the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors on Tuesday in Hartford, Connecticut.

In the memo, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, the tour told its members, "An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins."

This season, the eight signature events were The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship.

In the memo, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the policy board was considering implementing a 36-hole cut in each of the signature events -- only the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial currently do. The board took no action and will continue discussing the topic.

The tour said it would also develop an alternate list that would ensure that each of the signature events had a field of 72 players. The Travelers Championship has only 71 players after Rory McIroy withdrew Monday .

Woods, 48, has competed in only nine official PGA Tour events the past three seasons since returning to action at the 2022 Masters. The only non-major event he has competed in is the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles, which he hosts and benefits his foundation.

Woods withdrew from the second round of the Genesis Invitational in February because of illness. He finished 60th at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship and last week's U.S. Open .

Woods said he planned to compete in next month's Open Championship, scheduled for July 18-21 at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.

When Woods was asked at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 on Friday if playing in more events might help him perform better in the majors, he didn't seem ready to play additional tournaments.

"I've only got one more tournament this season," Woods said. "Even if I win the British Open, I don't think I'll be in the [FedEx Cup] playoffs. Just one more event and then I'll come back whenever I come back."

In the memo, Monahan also gave members an update on the tour's negotiations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is considering a sizable investment in PGA Tour Enterprises. The PIF has funded the rival LIV Golf League the past three years.

Woods and other members of a transaction subcommittee met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and others in New York on June 7.

"As we've said in the past -- we can't negotiate in public -- but we are making progress," Monahan told the policy board, according to the memo. "Two weeks ago, members of our PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee met in New York with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of the PIF, as well as members of his team. During that meeting, we reached consensus on several items, but both parties recognize that there is still work to do to reach a final agreement.

"Our talks are ongoing, with the goal of developing a shared vision for the future of professional golf that is pro-competitive and provides players with the best global opportunities."
