UTSA rolls out orange carpet for “The College Tour” episode premiere
Sophomore Angelica Cordero, a first-generation student and psychology major from Taylor, Texas, is one of 20 UTSA students featured in an upcoming episode of the streaming TV series “The College Tour.”
FEBRUARY 7, 2023 — UTSA will be featured in an upcoming episode of the streaming TV series “The College Tour . ” Now in its seventh season, “The College Tour” showcases colleges and universities from across the country, telling the story of each institution from the perspective of its students.
Swapping out the typical red carpet for UTSA orange, a screening party to celebrate the episode’s debut will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 13, in the Student Union Retama Auditorium (SU 2.02.02) at the UTSA Main Campus.
Twenty UTSA students from a wide variety of majors and backgrounds are featured in the 60-minute episode. The show will be split into multiple segments, allowing each student to illustrate life at UTSA from their own unique viewpoint. Each segment also focuses on a different aspect of the UTSA college experience, ranging from campus life and student activities to career-engaged learning and research excellence.
“The College Tour” host Alex Boylan spent some quality time with Rowdy during filming on the UTSA Main Campus last fall.
One of the 20 featured students is sophomore Angelica Cordero , a first-generation student and psychology major from Taylor, Texas.
“Working on ‘The College Tour’ and representing UTSA has been a great experience,” said Cordero, who is a member of the service organization VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community, Education and Service). “I believe the opportunities at UTSA are endless, and I auditioned for ‘The College Tour’ because I want to show others that anything is possible here no matter who you are or where you come from.”
Other featured students include Chloe Barnes, Joshua Barron, Miranda Boggan, Canaan Eggers, Juan Ramirez Garcia, Gisele George, Jesus Guillen Jr., Farah Hamed, Maren Kitogo, Erica McFarland, Esteban Mejia, Jenelle Millison, Madeline Morales, Kaitlyn Page, Emily Perez, Daniel Phillips, Amanda Salas, Maria Wilhelm and Rashad Wisdom .
“We are thrilled to feature a glimpse of UTSA and our outstanding students on ‘The College Tour . ’ What a great opportunity to show prospective students from both the U.S. and around the globe all that UTSA has to offer. Viewers gain a real feel for what it’s like to be a student here,” said UTSA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Andrews Espy . “Our diverse students, representative of our unique academic community, share their stories and learning experiences as Roadrunners and highlight the many pathways to success offered here at UTSA.”
Created by award-winning producers and hosted by Emmy-nominated storyteller Alex Boylan , “The College Tour” crew filmed at various locations across UTSA’s Main, Southwest and Downtown campuses last September.
In addition to the main episode, Boylan also sits down with UTSA President Taylor Eighmy and Director of Freshmen Recruitment Ana K. Rodriguez as part of the Coffee With the President and Ask Admissions miniseries. In these short episodes, Boylan chats with Rodriguez and Eighmy to discuss topics including the admissions process and financial aid, UTSA’s student diversity, and what makes San Antonio an ideal city for students to begin their higher education journey.
UTSA’s episode of “The College Tour” will be available in mid-March on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and other streaming platforms .

San Antonio College prepares next generation of funeral directors with first mortuary on campus
A shortage of funeral directors is predicted.
Patty Santos , Reporter
Santiago Esparza , Photojournalist
SAN ANTONIO – Opening a mortuary on a college campus has never been done, but it’s been the goal for Mary Mena, the mortuary science program coordinator at San Antonio College for more than a decade.
“That idea started about 16 years ago, actually. And here it is, 16 years later that we have our own funeral home,” Mena said, standing inside the facility on Ashby Street.
SAC already has two programs, a funeral director certification and an associate in science mortuary. About 20-25 students complete the programs each year.
The new idea is to give students a full scope of how to help families through the arrangements of a loved one, from embalmment to the paperwork required, to the selection of a casket and urn.
“We appreciate that we’re given this opportunity and the students really appreciate that they’re given this opportunity. And I think the other thing that we really, really stress is that this is someone’s loved one and they have entrusted them to us. And that’s something we take really serious,” she said.
Jennifer Floyd, the SAC Mortuary funeral director, says in a time when a shortage of funeral directors is predicted over the next five years, the ability to prepare the next generation will be important.
“We are more focused on learning, and less being profitable. Our goal is to ensure that our students leave with the best experience possible. And, in order to do that, we have to make sure we give them the best equipment. So that’s what it’s about. We’re not focused on turning a profit,” she said.
The mortuary opened for business on June 3, 2024.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
