Madison, Georgia, Debuts an Ambitious New Safari Park

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park offers up-close animal encounters and luxury glamping. Plus, where to eat when you’re in town.

An African safari has always been high on my bucket list, but with two school-aged children, it just hasn’t happened. So the idea of seeing something similar an hour east of Atlanta was certainly intriguing. Opened June 1, the Georgia Safari Conservation Park features more than 500 acres of grassy terrain, sixty-three animal species from around the world, and lavish accommodations designed to immerse you in the experience. On our two-night trip, my family learned more about animals than we have on all our trips to the zoo combined. Some of them—like Clover the addax, Vlad the water buffalo, and Condo the African spurred tortoise—we spotted from the safety of our safari vehicle, while others, like Phoenix the giraffe, we were able to hand-feed.

In the works for more than ten years, the park is the brainchild of chief development officer Bill Killmer, who dreamed of a place where people could engage with the natural world. Michael Conrads, a developer and investor, offered up his family’s land. “This project allows future generations to bump around on this beautiful land like my father once did, enjoying and appreciating the area’s rolling hills and rural landscape while creating an economic engine for the region,” says Conrads, now president of the Georgia Safari Conservation Park.

His team of animal specialists worked with like-minded organizations across the country, including North Texas Safari Park in Bonham, Texas, and the Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio, to determine which African species would thrive in the Georgia Piedmont and how they could best nurture, breed, and sustain them. The result is a three-tier menu of experiences featuring a variety of wildlife.

Perhaps best for day-trippers, the base option is a $39-per-person Guided Safari Tour. This ninety-minute adventure primarily takes place aboard a twenty-four-seat, open-air vehicle. Buckle up as you off-road across the “savanna” in search of zebras, antelope, and elands while experts share tidbits about the animals’ habitats, eating habits, and personalities. (Warning: This might not be Africa, but it’s still the great outdoors, so come prepared with bug spray and sneakers or boots.) Before you’re done, you’ll enjoy a meet-and-greet with some smaller residents, such as a speckled king snake, a bearded dragon, and soon, a two-toed sloth.

Want to see the big game? The Safari Encounter Tour ($125 per person, included in overnight stays) also traverses the property, but you’ll get an added visit to the expansive giraffe and rhino barn. Here, in addition to learning about the park’s wildlife enrichment and conservation efforts, participants get nearly in arm’s reach of the animals (with a protective barrier). If he’s feeling up for it, you may have the opportunity to feed Phoenix the giraffe—although he turned up his nose at the lettuce I offered him.

new safari in atlanta

For the ultimate luxury, there’s a three-hour VIP Safari Tour, which costs $2,500 for a group of eight. Expect a private vehicle, extended small-animal encounters—with a chinchilla, an adorable fennec fox, and a three-banded armadillo perhaps—and a behind-the-scenes tour of the giraffe and rhino barn. This experience is included with a stay in the adjacent Giraffe Suite, where you can observe Phoenix’s every move through picture windows.

If you opt to overnight in one of the six Luxury Safari Tents, you’ll be able to see a plethora of animals from your room. Imported from Africa, these spacious one- and two-bedroom tents are furnished with plush canopy beds, handmade linens, and massive bathtubs. But the best parts are the floor-to-ceiling windows and wraparound decks. The first morning, my family awoke to a group of elands grazing nearby. Later we spotted ostriches in the distance. As we prepared to leave the next day, the bison looked up at us, seemingly saying goodbye.

The safari park does not serve food on the property. Fortunately, the town of Madison is a quick ten-minute drive away. Founded by Preston Snyder, MAD Hospitality has something of a monopoly on the Madison culinary scene, in a good way. The Dining Room , opened in 2023, is its crown jewel. Spearheaded by executive chef and culinary director Russell Hays, whose resume includes the Michelin-starred Restaurant Guy Savoy in Paris as well as JOEL in Atlanta, the fine-dining spot offers French-influenced, three- and four-course meals in an intimate, tranquil atmosphere. For breakfast, Betty Gene’s serves traditional Southern comfort fare, while the Sinclair next door offers a quick stop for coffee and, later, cocktails. No visit to the city’s Historic District is complete without an ornate pastry from the Patisserie nearby.

Go On A Wild Safari Adventure At Atlanta’s Fully Immersive Attraction “Illuminarium”

Adron McCann | WABE

June 24th, 2021

Perhaps you’ve spent time on the Atlanta BeltLine’s East Side Trail — it’s a lovely and transporting space in the heart of the city, but unlikely to contain any inter-dimensional portals. That is, until July 2021, when the new fully immersive experience-based attraction Illuminarium is set to open on the BeltLine off of Ralph McGill Boulevard. At its first exhibit, “ WILD: Safari Experience , ” visitors will explore a virtual African landscape that activates all the senses, even smell. The attraction’s interactive environments respond to visitors’ movements using an array of cutting-edge technologies. Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg and Executive Vice President of Technology and Content Brian Allen joined “City Lights” Senior Producer Kim Drobes to describe the new attraction and how it was created.

Interview highlights:

Why immersive, and why the BeltLine?

“I think it’s no secret that there are some amazing experiences that have opened all over the world,” Greenberg said. “Things like Team Lab in Tokyo, and Atelier des Lumières in Paris, and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. And we saw these trends, in what some people call the experience economy, and thought we could do something really special.”

“We saw the location on the BeltLine and it just felt perfect,” Greenberg said. “We just loved the energy — you know, when you’re on the BeltLine you’re kind of on an adventure, and we just loved that vibe. So, when we saw it, we went, ‘We’re going to put the world’s first Illuminarium here. We were actually looking in New York City for a long time to find the right spot, but when we saw this one, we said, ‘Let’s start here.’”

What is Illuminarium?

“What I like to say is, we have created, and are creating, a new media format,” Allen said. “We have a very large and beautiful canvas for audio, video, interaction, a true multisensory experience. And the advent of multiple technologies, including native 4k laser projection, audio tech capabilities, interactive capabilities powered by lidar, scent capabilities, allowed me and the team to really layer technologies together, to be more of a supporting character for the content that gets displayed.”

“When you walk into an Illuminarium, when you come to our Safari experience, you’re going to see it like reality, you’re going to hear it in an extraordinary way, you’re going to feel it, because of the haptic systems in our floor that give you … a rumble effect in your body, you’re going to smell it through our sense systems, and you’re actually going to affect it, through the lidar interactive system,” Greenberg said. “So when you’re walking down a dirt path, on our floors you’ll actually pick up dust as you walk … when you walk on the surface of the moon, you’ll actually leave footprints.”

Like virtual reality, but communal:

“Illuminarium is, in many ways, VR without the glasses, or without the headset,” Greenberg said. “And what that allows you to do, is to have a shared experience … to go to Africa with somebody, as you typically would, and to share those ‘wow’ moments, those head-turning moments of life.

“We think there’s never been a better time for people to come back together in a communal experience, which you just can’t do with VR.”

The mess in atlanta.

The two Americans who most want this presidential rematch were the ones standing onstage.

  • Share full article

new safari in atlanta

By Jess Bidgood

Well, that was ugly.

For 90 minutes on Thursday night, the presidential debate careened between former President Donald J. Trump’s often misleading attacks and President Biden’s shaky attempts to respond.

Sure, they clashed over abortion rights, tariffs and immigration, with Trump often distorting his record and Biden struggling to explain his own. They disagreed over America’s role in the world and slammed each other’s economic policies.

But mostly, they fought about each other.

They hurled insults and invective in strikingly personal terms, calling the other the worst president in U.S. history. Each said the other would start World War III. They accused each other of seeking retribution against their political opponents.

Glimmers of hope for substantive exchanges quickly died. Take the moment when Trump, 78, was asked if he was capable at his age of serving another term. That turned into a spat over the two contenders’ golf games.

Both Biden and Trump are deeply unpopular, and voters have for months been telling pollsters that they did not want this rematch even as they sent the candidates to the top of the ticket.

Watching the debate last night, as each cast the other as the reason that he is running again, it seemed clear that the two Americans who most want this rematch were standing onstage.

“I wish he was a great president because I wouldn’t be here right now. I’d be at one of my many places enjoying myself,” Trump said, adding, “The only reason I’m here is that he’s so bad as a president.”

Biden portrayed Trump as a unique threat to the country, castigating him in deeply personal terms and repeatedly calling him a liar.

“How many billions of dollars do you owe in civil penalties for molesting a woman in public, for doing a whole range of things, of having sex with a porn star on the night, while your wife was pregnant,” Biden asked, before accusing Trump of having “the morals of an alley cat.”

The shakiness of Biden’s overall performance is already giving rise to urgent questions from Democrats about whether he is really the right candidate to take on a figure he has cast as so dangerous to the country.

But the deep enmity on display — and the messiness of the night — may have damaged them both.

Frank Luntz, a Republican pollster, posted on X that the focus group of undecideds he had run during the debate moved away from Trump as he became more “vicious” toward Biden — although, by the end of the night, his group was calling for Biden to step aside.

And Kristen Morris, 60, a nursing student in a suburb of Charlotte, N.C., who is unenthusiastic about voting for Biden or Trump, told my colleague Eduardo Medina that “the hyperbole on both sides is just really, really hard to stomach.”

Halfway through the debate, she said she was troubled by Trump’s lack of remorse about his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. But she was also disturbed by Biden’s inability to coherently finish thoughts.

The whole thing, she said, was deeply unsettling — and it’s likely that many Americans agree.

What to read

Biden’s disjointed performance on Thursday night prompted a wave of panic among Democrats and reopened discussion of whether he should be the nominee, Peter Baker reports .

Six takeaways from the presidential debate from Shane Goldmacher and Jonathan Swan.

Michael Gold recapped Trump’s debate performance : relentless attacks and falsehoods.

We fact-checked Trump and Biden on the economy, immigration and foreign policy.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. debated alone , upset over being left out.

Democrats feared a horror show. Some say they got one.

Earlier this week, I wrote about the Democrats and supporters of President Biden who desperately wanted Biden to perform well in last night’s debate but were worried that he might slip up.

I checked in with some of them on Thursday night. They were not doing well.

Laurie Lowe had told me that she and her friends had printed out debate bingo cards. They had booze on hand in case things didn’t go their way and they needed to turn bingo into a drinking game.

They started drinking, Lowe said, within 60 seconds.

“That was so painful. Trump was his usual self, setting the fact-checking machine on fire, but oh dear … Biden’s verbal stumbles and how frail he acted were stunning,” Lowe emailed me after the debate, saying the night had been depressing for Democrats. “I’m not real excited any more about casting my vote in November.”

Jay Bodenstein, who had told me that he was “fearful” before the debate, described himself as “heartsick” during the second commercial break.

“Biden just struggled and struggled to pull himself together. This was a terribly disappointing debate,” Bodenstein said once it was over. “On the other side of the podium, Trump offered his standard rants and lies and never answered a question. Another debate will be catastrophic for Biden. This was painful to watch.”

André 3000 announces new tour, returns to atlanta in the fall, a.r. shaw, executive editor.

  • June 26, 2024

André 3000 will be hitting the road again after announcing a tour that will kick-off in the fall. The Atlanta native will continue to express himself as an instrumentalist following the release of his solo album, “New Blue Sun.”

Co-produced by André and Carlos Niño, the tour will feature Nate Mercereau, Surya Botofasina, Deantoni Parks, Diego Gaeta, Matthewdavid, V.C.R, Diego Gaeta, Jesse Peterson, and Mia Doi Todd, New Blue Sun is an entirely instrumental album; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, improvised, aural organism.

André 3000 last performed in his hometown during the Atlanta Jazz Festival on Memorial Day. He celebrated his 49th birthday straying away from the rap lyrics that brought him prominence as a member of OutKast. Held at Piedmont Park, the 2024 Atlanta Jazz Festival provided the space for André to perform before the largest crowd since releasing the “New Blue Sun” album.

Void of an actual setlist, André 3000 and his band mostly improvised throughout the show, vibing with each other while taking audience members on a hypnotic journey.

André also took a moment to pay homage to Rico Wade, the founder of Dungeon Family/Organized Noize who passed in April. During his set, André shared how Wade pushed him to be great. He wrapped his performance with a furious medley of tribal sounds and improvised jazz, proving that artistic expression can be limitless.

André’s fall tour will wrap in Atlanta on Nov. 14 with a show at the Fox Theater.

Why The Unprotected 2025 Pick From The Lakers Could Be the Best Asset for Atlanta From the Dejounte Murray Trade

Jackson caudell | 13 hours ago.

  • Atlanta Hawks

One of the biggest trades of the offseason went down last night when Atlanta moved Dejounte Murray to New Orleans for Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance, and two first-round picks. One of the picks is in next year's draft and it is an unprotected pick from the Los Angeles Lakers. While Daniels is the asset that Hawks fans like the most in this trade at the moment, I think the big prize might be the Lakers pick that is coming back to Atlanta. Atlanta was not guaranteed to have a first round pick in next year's draft due to trading for Dejounte Murray back in 2022, but now they have one. If the Kings pick conveys (protected 1-12), Atlanta could have two first round picks next year.

Let's break down why the Lakers pick could be so valuable.

Trading Murray to New Orleans took away one of the Lakers top targets this offseason. Los Angeles as currently constructed is a very average team in a loaded Western Conference and the number of trade targets to help them improve next year is dwindling. Could they target Brandon Ingram or Zach LaVine? Donovan Mitchell seems ready to re-sign with Cleveland, Trae Young is not getting moved, Phoenix is not moving anyone, it does not sound like Minnesota is moving Karl-Anthony Towns, and I don't think the Lakers have the necessary assets to trade for Lauri Markkanen. The Lakers could always pull a surprise and land someone nobody expects them too, but the list of trade targets is dwindling.

Not only is the Western Conference loaded, but the Lakers would have to hope that they get another fully healthy season from both LeBron James and Anthony Davis, something that is not guaranteed. Davis just had his most fully healthy season maybe of his entire career and put up an All-NBA season. James was healhty for most of the season and still put up great numbers. Both of those things happened and the Lakers were still a Zion Williamson injury away in the play-in tournament from being put in a win or go home game vs the Kings, which they might have lost. What if Davis and James can't stay healthy? That could be big trouble for the Lakers.

Assuming they do both stay healthy, it bears repeating that the Western Conference is very stacked. Let's look at last year's standings and see where the Lakers could fit in:

1. Oklahoma City- Added Alex Caruso to an already stacked lineup that was the No. 1 seed last season.

2. Denver- Might lose Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but still have Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray

3. Minnesota- Bringing their entire team back and should be a contender

4. Clippers- They are the biggest question mark so far, but they could bring back Paul George and James Harden, making them a better team than the Lakers.

5. Dallas- Just made the Finals and could have some moves up their sleeve to add to their team

6. Phoenix- Even with all of their injuries and problems last year, they finished higher than the Lakers.

8- New Orleans- Just added Murray, but they still have moves to make. They also need to stay healthy.

9. Sacramento- Kings nearly made the playoffs last year and should be right in the mix again. They also have been rumored to be interested in makings moves to add to their team.

10. Golden State- The Warriors might lose Klay Thompson, but they are reportedly trying to make big moves to add to the team around Steph Curry. They are a question mark though.

11. Houston- The Rockets nearly made the play-in last year are clearly ready to make a playoff push.

12. Utah- Not a playoff team

13. Memphis- The Grizzlies are healthy again and should be a contender in the West.

14. San Antonio- Not ready to challenge for a playoff spot with Victor Wembanyama just yet barring a surprise.

15. Portland- Could trade away more pieces and be the worst team in the NBA

Looking at the standings, the only teams I can guarantee the Lakers will be better than going into next year (right now) is Utah, Portland, and San Antonio. Some good teams are going to miss the playoffs in the Western Conference next season and one of them could be the Lakers, which would place them in the Draft Lottery in what is supposed to be a loaded 2025 Draft Class.

There could be some big moves made that make the Lakers much better, but they are not clear right now. That could make their pick a very, very good asset next offseason.

The New York Times editorial board calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race

People walk by the New York Times building in New York

The New York Times editorial board in an editorial published Friday urged President Joe Biden to step aside in the 2024 race after his poor debate performance in Atlanta on Thursday night.

“The clearest path for Democrats to defeat a candidate defined by his lies is to deal truthfully with the American public: acknowledge that Mr. Biden can’t continue his race, and create a process to select someone more capable to stand in his place to defeat Mr. Trump in November,” the editorial board wrote .

The opinion piece acknowledged that ending his campaign would “be against all of Mr. Biden’s personal and political instincts” and highlighted that it was Biden himself who challenged former President Donald Trump to the debate.

“The truth Mr. Biden needs to confront now is that he failed his own test,” the board wrote.

The Biden campaign brushed off the decision by the editorial board in a statement Friday.

“The last time Joe Biden lost the New York Times editorial board’s endorsement it turned out pretty well for him,” said campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond, who was previously a White House aide and a congressman from Louisiana.

The paper’s editorial board ultimately backed Biden in the general election in 2020 but had endorsed Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., during the Democratic primaries earlier that year.

At that time, the board had raised concerns about Biden’s age, saying Biden, then 77, should “pass the torch to a new generation of political leaders.”

The Trump campaign said in response to the editorial board’s decision that Biden is the “incumbent president, he is the Democrat nominee, he has also said he won’t drop out, it’s too late to change that.”

Biden has given no indication that he plans to step aside, but he has the option to withdraw before he is formally nominated at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August.

The editorial board’s piece comes as Democrats have e xpressed alarm following the president’s debate performance Thursday night, which was punctuated by a raspy voice and rhetorical missteps such as tripping over his words and apparently losing his train of thought.

Biden defended his capacity to serve in a Friday speech infused with energy that had been missing as he debated the night before.

“I know I’m not a young man,” Biden told supporters in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday afternoon. “I don’t walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know — I know how to tell the truth!”

Biden, at 81, is the oldest president in American history. His opponent, former President Donald Trump, is the second-oldest person ever to serve as president.
