Der  Emsa Travel Mug  ist ein Kult-Kaffeebecher! Nicht nur bei uns, wo er sich im  Thermobecher Test   sehr gut geschlagen hat, sondern auch bei Stiftung Warentest hat der wieder verwendbare Emsa Becher sehr gut abgeschnitten.

Was den Bekanntheitsgrad angeht, dürfte der Emsa Thermobecher die Konkurrenz der anderen Becher locker übertrumpfen. In diesem Artikel schauen wir uns an, in welchen Varianten es den beliebten Emsa Kaffeebecher gibt, und warum er dieses Mal den Testsieg knapp verpasst hat.

Damit Du Deinen Kaffee to go auch unbeschwert und in aller Ruhe genießen kannst, sollte der auserwählte Thermobecher gewissen Ansprüchen gerecht werden.

Auch nach knapp drei Stunden war das heiße Wasser, das zu Beginn in den Travel Mug eingefüllt wurde, noch erstaunlich warm.

Auch bezüglich der Dichtigkeit kann man nicht meckern. Bei einem herkömmlichen Gebrauch hält der Kaffeebecher absolut dicht und ist zudem gut für die Spülmaschine geeignet.

Der Deckel mit der sogenannten 360-Grad-Öffnung lässt sich hierfür spielend einfach in zwei Teile zerlegen. Der Griff des Edelstahlbechers besteht aus Gummi, was für ein angenehmes Gefühl in der Hand sorgt.

Emsa vs. Contigo: Der direkte Vergleich

Beide becher sind solide gemacht.

Im direkten Vergleich Emsa Travel Mug vs. Contigo Westloop merkst du die Unterschiede. Zunächst: Beides sind super Becher, beide sind solide gemacht und mit beiden kannst du definitiv wirklich nichts falschmachen! Es mag andere, unsauber und qualitativ minderwertige Isolierbecher auf dem Markt geben, doch diese beiden Marken – Emsa und Contigo – stehen für Qualität, das ist sicher.

Der Unterschied zeigt sich darin – unserer Meinung nach -, dass der Contigo einfach  noch mehr  Leistung bringt, als der Emsa Travel Mug. Denn der Contigo ist noch leichter und es passt noch etwas mehr in den Becher hinein, als in den Emsa. Das hat dann jedoch auch seinen Preis und mit über 30 Euro liegt der Contigo in einer Preisklasse, die es nicht jedem wert sein wird, zu investieren für einen Thermobecher.

6 Fragen, die dir bei der Kaufentscheidung helfen können

Hier kommt es dann ein bisschen auf die Ansprüche des Einzelnen an. Bei der Entscheidung können dann folgende 6 Fragen eine Orientierung bieten und helfen:

• Wie häufig will ich meinen Thermobecher in Zukunft nutzen? Welche Ansprüche habe ich an ihn?
• Wie wichtig ist mir das Volumen? Reicht mir das kleinere Volumen? Dann ist der Emsa Travel Mug die passende Wahl. Reicht mir das kleinere Volumen nicht? Dann wäre der Contigo die passendere Wahl.
• Wie wichtig ist mir das Gewicht? Oder anders gesagt: Bin ich z.B. viel wandern/reisen und werde den Becher dadurch viel mit mir herumschleppen? In dem Fall wäre der Contigo passender. Wird die Frage verneint, wäre der Emsa passender.
• Wie hoch ist mein Budget für die Neuinvestition? Möchte ich nur die knapp 20 Euro hinlegen, die der Emsa Travel Mug kostet, oder bin ich bereit nahezu das Doppelte zu zahlen, was der Contigo sich fragt?
• Wie wichtig ist mir das Design? Oder anders gesagt: Welcher der beiden Becher gefällt mir von der Optik einfach besser?
• Wie wichtig ist mir, dass ich einen Henkel am Becher habe? So, wie es der Emsa Travel Mug hat, der Contigo Westloop aber nicht? Möchte ich einen, weil ich es mag, den Becher so zu tragen und zu halten, dann sollte ich definitiv zum Emsa greifen. Stört mich so ein Henkel vielleicht sogar? Dann ist der Contigo sicher sinnvoll als Becher für mich.

Brauche ich mir keine sorgen zu machen, dass der emsa-becher ausläuft.

Nein, du kannst ihn drehen und wenden, oder auf den Kopf stellen, er ist dicht. Natürlich solltest du nicht gleichzeitig den Knopf mit der Trinköffnung drücken, aber das ist ja klar…

Schmeckt der Kaffee anders, wenn man ihn aus diesem Becher trinkt als aus der Tasse?

Natürlich ist es nicht ganz das Gleiche. Dennoch finden wir den Geschmack nach etwas Eingewöhnung inzwischen irgendwie „normal“ für  einen solchen Thermobecher und „normal“ heißt in diesem Fall lecker und gut. Es ist ja klar, dass es aus der Tasse noch einen Ticken besser schmeckt.

Kann man sich beim Trinken den Mund verbrennen?

Wenn du den Kaffee sofort nach dem Kochen einfüllst und direkt trinkst, kann das schon passieren. Denn dann ist der Kaffee ja noch sehr heiß. Der Emsa Travel Mug kühlt den Kaffee nur langsam herunter, sodass du – falls du bereits zügig nach dem Eingießen schon trinken möchtest und nicht erst an einem anderen Ort beispielsweise – am besten den Verschluss zum Abkühlen etwas öffnest und vorsichtig trinkst.

Wie hoch ist der Becher ohne Deckel? Passt er unter den Kaffeeautomat?

Solange er richtig sitzt, ja. Ein bisschen drücken muss man aber schon, und halt drauf achten, dass er richtig sitzt.

Habe ich das richtig verstanden, dass der Deckel aus bpa-freiem Material ist? So ist es.

Welches material hat das innere des emsa.

Im Inneren ist er komplett aus Edelstahl gefertigt. Außen Kunststoff.

Kann ich auch Suppe in dem Becher mitnehmen?

Natürlich, da spricht nichts gegen. Nur dran denken, den Emsa-Becher im Anschluss wieder gut durchzuwaschen, damit man  nicht ein paar Tage später beim Kaffeetrinken noch das Suppen-Aroma herausschmeckt.

Gelingt die Reinigung mit der Hand einfach oder nicht?

Er ist zwar spülmaschinengeeignet, doch per Hand lässt er sich auch gut reinigen. Hilfreich ist es aber schon, wenn man eine Bürste oder einen Schwamm hat, oder schmale Hände, um an alle Ecken heranzukommen.

Manche meinen, der Emsa Travel Mug Thermobecher sei der ideale Begleiter für dauerhaften „mobilen“ Kaffee- und Teegenuss. Bei diesem Produkt handelt es sich um das Topmodell aus dem Hause Emsa .

Der Hersteller Emsa hatte von sich schon in der Vergangenheit durch zahlreiche Thermoskannen Reden gemacht. Ob der außerordentlich beliebte Travel Mug (schon über 2.900 Bewertungen allein bei Amazon), hält was er verspricht haben wir von Thermobecher.info in einem Langzeittest getestet.

Insgesamt ist der To-Go Becher von Emsa jetzt schon seit einem Jahr in alltäglicher Benutzung . Wie er sich schlägt und geschlagen hat, hoffen wir mit diesem Testbericht näher bringen zu können.

Dadurch soll eine klare und nachvollziehbare Entscheidungshilfe entstehen. Hält der Becher was die vielen positiven Bewertungen versprechen oder sind diese bloß Schall und Rauch?

Die Antworten dazu hier im Emsa Travel Mug Test.

Starten wir direkt mit dem Punkt, der uns am meisten beeindruckt hat: die Haptik.

Unter Haptik bezeichnen wir all das, was man spürt, wenn man ein Produkt wie einen Coffe-to-Go Becher in die Hand nimmt. Die Qualität wie Verarbeitung muss dann einfach passen.

Und das, soviel sei vorweggenommen, ist beim Emsa Travel Mug ohne Zweifel der Fall. Uns sind schon zahlreiche Becher in die Hände gefallen, doch Emsa scheint einfach alles richtig zu machen.

Korpus aus Edelstahl

Der Emsa Travel Mug ist grundständig aus hochwertigem Edelstahl verarbeitet. Aus Plastik hingegen ist das Mundstück hergestellt worden.

Das hat im Alltag Vorteile. Wir würden behaupten, dass das Ansetzen des Mundes an hochwertigem Plastik wesentlich angenehmer ist im Vergleich zu Edelstahl.

Gummierung für sicheren Halt

Damit man den Becher auch sicher halten kann, ist das Hauptteil in der Mitte gummiert worden. Das hat uns im Alltag schon einmal vor einer nassen Hose bewahrt. Der Becher rutscht nicht so leicht aus der Hand.

Im Prinzip kann man festhalten, dass Emsa sich scheinbar wirklich Gedanken um die Käufer gemacht hat und wirklich „Probleme lösen“ wollte.

Einerseits hat der Becher dank des Edelstahls das perfekte Gewicht um eine Gewisse Wertigkeit und Qualität auszustrahlen. Andererseits sorgt die Gummierung und das Plastik-Kopfstück dafür, dass auch die Funktion nicht aus dem Blick gerät.

Das bringt uns auch schon zum nächsten Punkt im Testbericht. Was kann der Travel Mug Becher wirklich?

Gibt es pfiffige Lösungen die man im Alltag wirklich spürt?

In jedem Detail merkt man, dass Emsa sich um die Bedürfnisse im Kaffee-Liebhaber-Alltag wirklich gekümmert hat.

360 Grad Trink-Öffnung

Zu nennen wäre da zunächst, die „Trinkweise“. Man kennt das: gut gemeint ist nicht immer auch gut gemacht. So hatten wir in der Vergangenheit viele Becher mit speziellen Trinkansätzen.

Diese sollten heiße Getränke optimal und kontrolliert ausschenken. Beim Emsa Travel Mug ist so etwas aber gerade NICHT nötig. Denn: aus dem Becher kann 360 Grad getrunken werden. Einfach aber effektiv. Man muss auch nie befürchten, dass unkontrollierbar viel Flüssigkeit austritt. Dafür sorgt wahrscheinlich ein Filter im Inneren.

Man kann also problemlos rundherum zum Trinken ansetzen.

Der Travel Mug kann bequem mit einer Hand geöffnet und geschlossen werden. Im Alltag ist dieses Können- oder eben Nicht-Können nicht zu unterschätzen.

Geöffnet wird der Becher (zum Trinken) durch ein Drücken auf den grauen Button im Zentrum des Bechers.

Eine rote Markierung zeigt, ob der Becher offen oder zu ist. Dieses ist uns nach all der Zeit am problematischsten aufgefallen: die Markierung ist nur wenige Millimeter weit sichtbar.

Wir haben uns mittlerweile angewöhnt den Zustand (heruntergedrückt oder eben nicht heruntergedrückt) mit der Hand zu ertasten. Dieses könnte bei zukünftigen Versionen vielleicht noch etwas perfektioniert werden.

Abdichtung: 1a

Ein Lob hat sich der Hersteller hinsichtlich der Dichtung im Inneren des Kaffeebechers verdient.

Jeder kennt die Angst, wenn man einen To-Go-Becher in die Tasche steckt. Vielleicht könnte ja doch etwas auslaufen.

Wir können unsere Erfahrungen wieder geben: selbst wenn er einmal umkippt, läuft keine Flüssigkeit aus. Wirklich überhaupt keine.

Man kann ihn auf den Kopf stellen und es wird keinerlei Flüssigkeit austreten. Einzig noch verbliebene zwei bis drei Tropfen unmittelbar nach dem Trinken, die die Dichtung „überwunden“ haben könnten noch tropfen. Das wird man aber schlicht nicht vermeiden können.

Dieses Kriterium ist bei einem guten Thermobecher ein wirklich wichtiges und daher hier besonders hervorzuheben.

Angenehm und sicher in der Hand

Der Emsa Travel Mug ist immer angenehm anzufassen: durch den Edelstahlkolben mit Vakuumisolierung wird der Emsa Travel Mug von außen nicht heiß oder kalt.

Die Manschette aus hochwertigem Silikon macht den Trinkbecher besonders griffig. Sie ist im Übrigen in verschiedenen trendigen Farben und Dekors lieferbar, sodass sich jeder Nutzer seinen individuellen Emsa Travel Mug auswählen kann.

Wer die reine Edelstahlvariante bevorzugt, wählt die Variante ohne Manschette.

Kühl- und Wärme-Leistung

Kommen wir zur Isolierleistung. Kann man einen Kaffee oder Eistee auch noch Stunden später heiß bzw. kalt genießen?

Der Travel Mug hält laut Emsa warme Getränke 4 Stunden lang warm, Kaltgetränke bleibt 8 Stunden angenehm kühl. Damit leistet er mehr als sehr günstige Modelle.

Wir können bestätigen, dass diese Daten auch wirklich erreicht wurden. Subjektiv stellt sich jetzt (nach über einem Jahr) jedoch unserer Meinung nach ein leichter Verschleiß ein. Gefühlt hat die Isolierleistung etwas abgenommen.

360 Milliliter Fassungsvermögen ermöglichen den lang anhaltenden Genuss für unterwegs. Durch den 100%ig luft- und flüssigkeitsdichten Abschluss behalten Getränke zudem ihren Geschmack.

Kaffee und Tee schmecken daher auch bei späterem Trinken noch wie frisch gebrüht. Der Travel Mug isoliert jedenfalls in der ersten Stunde so gut, dass sehr heißer Kaffee beim Auffüllen einige Minuten auf trinkbare Temperatur abkühlen sollte.

Ganz einfach zu reinigen: Der Deckel ist ruckzuck in zwei Teile zerlegt. Übrig bleibt der äußere Deckel sowie das innen liegende Gewinde.

Er kann, ebenso wie der Becher, blitzschnell und gründlich von Hand oder in der Spülmaschine gereinigt werden. Die Schließvorrichtung in einem der beiden Deckelteile ist nicht nochmals zerlegbar, kann aber ebenfalls gut und einfach gereinigt werden.

Auf den Emsa Travel Mug gibt es 5 Jahre Garantie, dank der hochwertigen Werkstoffe und der soliden, professionellen Verarbeitung. Das jedenfalls scheinen die doch recht großzügigen 5 Jahre für einen Alltagsgegenstand zu unterstreichen.

Nachteile: Der vielleicht größte Nachteil ist der Preis des Kaffeebechers von Emsa, da er im Vergleich zu anderen Thermobechern eher teuer ist. Außerdem kann man den Isolierbecher oft nur unter einiger Kraftanstrengung aufdrehen.

Die wichtigsten Eigenschaften des Emsa Travel Mug

Die Marke Emsa ist bekannt für Thermosflaschen und Isolierkannen. Mit dem Travel Mug hat Emsa jetzt auch einen Thermobecher, der sich sehen lassen kann. Der Isolierbecher von Emsa gehört zu den zurzeit beliebtesten Thermobechern. Wie auch schon bei den Thermosflaschen und Isolierkannen, bietet der Isolierbecher eine hohe Qualität, die sich aber auch einiges Kosten lässt.

Den Thermobecher transportieren

Viele Thermobecher müssen immer aufrecht transportiert werden, da sie nicht wirklich dicht sind. Dies ist auch nicht immer wichtig, z.B. wenn man den Kaffeebecher nur in den Becherhalter im Auto stellen möchte, ist so ein Becher vollkommen ausreichend. Allerdings ist ein undichter Thermobecher für Menschen ohne Auto ein Problem. Viele wollen den gefüllten Kaffeebecher in der Tasche zusammen mit wichtigen Unterlagen oder sogar einem Laptop transportieren. In diesem Fall ist der Emsa Thermobecher die richtige Wahl.

Der Hersteller verspricht, dass Flüssigkeiten 4 Stunden lang heiß oder 8 Stunden lang kalt gehalten werden. Tatsächlich dauert es sehr lange bis sich Getränke im Emsa Isolierbecher abkühlen. Daher ist es sehr ratsam, den Kaffee (oder Tee oder …) schon in der gewünschten Trinktemperatur einzufüllen, damit man sich beim Trinken nicht auch noch nach 2 Stunden den Mund verbrennt.

Durch das einfache Knopfdrücken und dadurch, dass man sich den Becher nicht richtig hin drehen muss, kann man den Emsa Travel Mug sehr gut mit einer Hand benutzen. Dies ist besonders beim Autofahren praktisch, da man durch das Trinken nicht abgelenkt wird. Allerdings hat die große Trinkfläche auch den Nachteil, dass die Flüssigkeit leichter am Mund vorbei laufen kann, z.B. bei Erschütterungen, als bei kleineren Trinköffnungen. Uns gefällt die 360° Trinkfläche aber sehr gut, da sich das Trinken nach einem „richtigen Becher“ anfühlt und nicht nach einer Schnabeltasse.

Der Thermobecher und alle Teile davon können in der Spülmaschine gereinigt werden, was die Reinigung natürlich sehr komfortabel macht. Der Deckel kann zur Reinigung in zwei Teile zerlegt werden. Dadurch wird der Deckel in der Spülmaschine auch richtig sauber.

Das Design wird oft sehr gut bewertet, da es sehr edel aussieht. Der Thermobecher wird trotzdem als sehr robust beschrieben, der schon einiges aushalten kann. Nicht ganz so günstig ist dabei das Gewicht des Kaffeebechers. Obwohl der Emsa Isolierbecher nur 360ml Flüssigkeit tragen kann, ist der Becher recht groß und schwer.

Besonders gut gefällt uns, dass man eine so große Auswahl im Desing hat. Es gibt den Emsa Thermobecher in vielen Farben in zwei verschiedenen Design-Richtungen: Edelstahl bzw. lackierter Edelstahl und mit einer Manschette. Folgende Travel Mugs sind zurzeit erhältlich:

• Lackierter Edelstahl:  aquamarine, brombeer, hellgrün, schwarz und edestahl
• Manschette:  grün, erdbeere, himbeere, limette, wasserblau, blau, rot, schwarz, braun und brombeer

Den vielleicht wichtigsten Punk zuletzt: der Geschmack. Der Isolierbecher gibt zum Glück keinen Kunststoff-Geschmack (oder ähnliches) ab, so dass Kaffee auch wirklich nach Kaffee schmeckt.

Testkriterien waren Isolierung, Dichtigkeit, Reinigung, Handhabung (Verschluss), Geruch/Geschmack und die Schadstoffbelastung. Das ist keinesfalls verwunderlich bei einem so herausragenden Thermobecher – Emsa hat hier einen wirklichen Bestseller geschaffen, der kaum Schwächen aufweist und zudem sehr günstig ist. In diesem Testbericht fasse ich hier all meine Erfahrungen und die von über tausend anderen Rezensenten zusammen und stelle Dir den Isolierbecher aus dem Hause Emsa vor.

Ersteindruck vom emsa thermobecher.

Mit 360ml fasst der Emsa Isolierbecher zwar weniger als andere, aber für eine Kaffeeportion ist dies die optimale Menge. So bleibt der Becher kompakt und die Isolierleistung wird ebenfalls positiv beeinflusst (Das Fassungsvermögen ist Dir wichtig? Vielleicht ist eine kompakte Thermosflasche eher was für Dich, oder aber der Emsa Travel Mug Grande – mehr dazu weiter unten). Der Verschluss hält dicht , zudem ist er zerlegbar , spülmaschinenfest und es lässt sich von jeder Seite daraus trinken . Zum Trinken geöffnet wird der Verschluss per Druckknopf . Das Gehäuse des Emsa Thermobecher besteht aus vakuumiertem doppelwandigem Edelstahl und hält den Inhalt 4 Std. heiß sowie 8 Std. kalt – das ist ordentlich und kann mit teuren Modellen mithalten. Boden sowie Seiten sind gummiert was die Sicherheit und den Trage-Komfort erhöht. Der Emsa Isolierbecher passt außerdem problemlos in gängige Halterungen in Fahrzeugen und glänzt mit satten 5 Jahren Garantie !

Optisch ist der Emsa Travel Mug eher schlicht gehalten. Das Gehäuse hat einen Edelstahl-Look und der Deckel ist schwarz. Die Manschette, die den Isolierbecher umgibt, ist je nach Modell farbig. Die Farbpalette ist hier, wie man es schon von den Thermoskannen gewohnt ist, sehr groß und geht von grell-bunten Tönen bis hin zu schlichten Farben. Es sollte also für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei sein und so macht der Emsa Thermobecher überall eine gute Figur!

Emsa Thermobecher Travel Mug im Praxistest

Wie ich bereits andeutete, habe ich den Emsa Travel Mug Kaffeebecher wirklich sehr ausgiebig getestet, da meine Familie verschiedene Modelle besitzt. Ob in Schule, Uni oder auf Reisen – wir hatten den Isolierbecher schon überall im Einsatz. Hier die wichtigsten Ergebnisse meines Testberichtes:

Vier Stunden heiß und acht Stunden kalt, damit ist er fast auf einer Höhe mit dem Contigo Thermobecher . Ich muss sagen, dass ich persönlich diesen Zeitraum kaum ausreize, da ich meinen Coffee to go meist innerhalb der ersten Stunde trinke. Die Herstellerangaben hält der Emsa Thermobecher einigermaßen ein, jedoch ist der Kaffee/Tee nach 4h eher sehr warm als heiß, aber das ist denke ich ok. Kleiner Tipp: Immer daran denken, das Isolier-Gefäß vor der Benutzung mit heißem Wasser vorzuheizen.

Mir ist beim Emsa Isolierbecher noch nie etwas ausgelaufen, nicht mal bei Stürzen vom Tisch oder beim Transport in Taschen. Der Verschluss ist also tatsächlich zu 100 Prozent dicht.

Mittig im Verschluss ist ein runder Knopf, den man vor bzw. nach dem Trinken eindrücken muss. Das funktioniert sehr gut und lässt sich problemlos mit einer Hand bewerkstelligen. Einziger Nachteil ist, dass das Öffnen und Verschließen ein etwas lautes “plopp”-Geräusch verursacht, das insbesondere in stillen Räumen, Hörsälen und Klassenzimmern etwas nervig sein kann – aber wirklich störend ist das nicht. Erwähnenswert ist noch, dass man von jeder Seite aus dem Emsa Thermobecher trinken kann und dass der Verschluss leicht zu reinigen, zu zerlegen, spülmaschinenfest und vor allem auslaufsicher ist – das ist wirklich sehr praktisch!

Dank der Gummi-Applikationen am Körper und am Fuß liegt der Emsa Thermobecher sehr gut in der Hand und ist wirklich standfest. Er ist zwar weniger ergonomisch als der Contigo Westloop, dank der kompakteren Größe beeinträchtigt das die Haptik aber kaum.

Per “Knopfdruck” wird die Travel Mug trinkbereit gemacht – das schaffen die meisten sogar einhändig. Lediglich das etwas laute Plopp-Geräusch stört in leisen Umgebungen.

Der Verschluss ist sehr einfach abzudrehen und eine Beschädigung durch Überdrehen ist meiner Meinung nach unmöglich. Die Travel Mug ist zu 100% auslaufsicher.

Durch einfaches Aufdrehen ist der Verschluss zerlegbar und sehr einfach zu reinigen. Ich empfehle dazu den obersten Geschirrspülauszug in der Maschine.

Mein Fazit zum Thermobecher von Emsa

Auch wenn Sie schon ein anderes Modell besitzen, mit dem Emsa Isolierbecher macht man nichts falsch, immerhin vergibt der Hersteller ganze 5 Jahre Garantieleistung. Ob als Geschenk oder zur eigenen Nutzung, bei dem Preis macht es auch nichts wenn man ihn mal vergisst (passiert ja dem ein oder anderen öfter). Bei der Farbauswahl findet sicher jeder seinen persönlichen Liebling. Vorziehen würde ich dem Travel Mug lediglich meinen Testsieger, den ▷ Contigo Westloop oder den ▷ Thermos King Tumbler .

Zu klein? Emsa Travel Mug Grande!

Wer gern etwas mehr 360ml Tee oder Kaffee trinken möchte, der kann sich für den Emsa Travel Mug Grande entscheiden. Dieser Emsa Thermobecher fasst ganze 500ml. Er kostet dabei kaum mehr Geld und kommt ansonsten mit exakt denselben Stärken zu dir nach Haus. Emsa Travel Mug & Travel Mug Grande Ersatzteile

Als Ersatzteil für den Emsa Thermobecher käme im Grunde nur ein Ersatzverschluss in Frage. Aktuell werden solche Ersatzteile nicht angeboten, ich halte sie aber auch kaum für nötig. Zum einen gibt es ja 5 Jahre Garantie auf das Produkt – geht in diesen 5 Jahren etwas kaputt, so bekommt man ohnehin Ersatz. Nach diesen 5 Jahren muss man sich die Frage stellen, ob ein Ersatzverschluss (Preis vermutlich 5€?) eine lohnenswerte Investition ist wenn der ganze Becher schon nur ca. 15€ kostet.

Abgesehen davon ist gar nicht zu erwarten, dass der Emsa Thermobecher Verschluss so schnell den Geist aufgibt. Dass es hier keine Ersatzteile zu kaufen gibt, ist also nicht weiter tragisch.

Emsa Thermobecher mit Gravur

Auch eine sehr schöne Idee ist es, den Emsa Thermobecher mit Gravur zu bestellen. Es können Namen oder andere Begriffe eingraviert werden, sodass dem Thermobecher eine persönliche Note verliehen wird. Optimal als Geschenk zu Weihnachten, Geburtstag, oder Namenstag. Momentan ist der Emsa Thermobecher mit Gravur leider nicht lieferbar, doch wenn es wieder so weit ist, erfahren Sie es bei mir als erstes!

Dabei ist der Isolierbecher zu 100 Prozent auslaufsicher und hält Getränke bis zu sechs Stunden heiß und zwölf Stunden kalt*. Außerdem erleichtert der verbesserte Quick-Press mit Druckventil das Öffnen bei vollgefülltem TRAVEL MUG mit nur einer Hand für den sofortigen Trinkgenuss.

TRAVEL MUG gibt es in den attraktiven Sleeve Designs Classic (überarbeitet) und Waves. Die zwölf trendigen Farben machen die Mehrweg-Becher zu echten Hinguckern. Die Silikon-Manschette mit neuer typografischer Kaffee- und Tee- (Classic) bzw. trendiger Wellen-Prägung (Waves) sorgt dabei für einen angenehmen Trage- und Haltekomfort. Der Deckel besteht aus 2 Teilen, ist komplett zerlegbar und nach Gebrauch im Handumdrehen in der Spülmaschine. Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

• Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
• Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

• Fall: September, October, November.
• Winter: December, January, February.
• Spring: March, April, May.
• Summer: June, July, August.

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

• The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
• Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
• End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.

What to do in Moscow

Ballet at the bolshoy, cathedral of christ the saviour, drinking & nightlife, entertainment, house-museums, the museum of modern history, the new tretyakov gallery, novodevichiy convent, patriarch’s ponds, the pushkin museum of fine arts, sandunovsky baths, the tretyakov gallery.

Travel in Moscow is easier than you might think: the city’s general layout is a series of concentric circles and radial lines emanating from Red Square and the Kremlin, and the centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Moscow’s sights can also be mapped as strata of its history: the old Muscovy that Russians are eager to show; the now retro-chic Soviet-era sites such as VDNK and Lenin’s Mausoleum; and the exclusive restaurants and shopping malls that mark out the new Russia. A CityPass is a good bet if you plan on seeing several of the city's heavyweight attractions.

Despite its size, Moscow's concentric layout is easier to grasp than you'd imagine, and the city's famous metro ensures that almost everywhere of interest is within fifteen minutes' walk of a station. Red Square and the Kremlin are the historic nucleus of the city, a magnificent stage for political drama, signifying a great sweep of history that includes Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Stalin and Gorbachev. Here you'll find Lenin's Mausoleum and St Basil's Cathedral, the famous GUM department store, and the Kremlin itself, whose splendid cathedrals and Armoury Museum head the list of attractions. Immediately east of Red Square lies the Kitay-gorod, traditionally the commercial district, and originally fortified like the Kremlin. Stretches of the ramparts remain behind the Metropol and Rossiya hotels, and the medieval churches of Zaryade and the shops along Nikolskaya ulitsa may tempt you further into the quarter, where you'll find the former headquarters of the Communist Party. Take a private Kremlin tour to skip the lines for the Kremlin grounds and cathedrals.

The Kremlin and Kitay-gorod are surrounded by two quarters defined by rings of boulevards built over the original ramparts of medieval times, when Moscow's residential areas were divided into the "White Town" or Beliy Gorod, and the humbler "Earth Town" or Zemlyanoy Gorod. Situated within the leafy Boulevard Ring that encloses the Beliy Gorod are such landmarks as the Bolshoy Theatre and the Lubyanka headquarters of the secret police – with its "KGB Museum" – while the Zemlyanoy Gorod that extends to the eight-lane Garden Ring is enlivened by the trendy old and new Arbat streets, with three Stalin skyscrapers dominating the Ring itself.

Beyond this historic core Moscow is too sprawling to explore on foot. Krasnaya Presnya, Fili and the southwest describes a swathe which includes the former Russian Parliament building (known as the White House); Tolstoy's house and the Novodeviche Convent and Cemetery; Victory Park, with its war memorials and Jewish museum; and Moscow State University in the Sparrow Hills – the largest of the Stalin skyscrapers.

Across the river from the Kremlin, Zamoskvorechye and the south are the site of the old and new Tretyakov Gallery's superlative collection of Russian art. Private guided tours are recommended for art enthusiasts. Here too you'll find Gorky Park, the Donskoy and Danilov monasteries that once stood guard against the Tartars, and the romantic ex-royal estates of Tsaritsyno and Kolomenskoe – the latter known for staging folklore festivals and historical pageants.

Taganka and Zayauze, east of the centre, likewise harbour fortified monasteries – the Andronikov, Novospasskiy and Simonov – and the erstwhile noble estates of Kuskovo and Kuzminki, but the main lure for tourists is the Izmaylovo art market. Inside the Izmaylovo Kremlin, a cultural centre, there are also a range of attractions, from the Bread Museum and the Vodka History Museum to the fascinating Museum of Russian Toys.

Moscow's Northern Suburbs cover a vast area with a sprinkling of sights. Foremost is the Memorial and Museum of Cosmonautics and VDNK. For anyone interested in the glory days of the space race, and its monumental landmarks and propaganda, a visit is a must, like on this guided tour . In the vicinity are the Ostankino Palace, Moscow's Botanical Gardens and TV Tower. West from here, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines will appeal to visitors with an interest in Soviet social history, too.

Outside Moscow there's scope for day-excursions to the Trinity Monastery of St Sergei, the Abramtsevo artists' colony, Tchaikovsky's house in Kiln, Lenin's estate at Gorki Leninskie, and the battlefield of Borodino, where the battle is re-enacted every September. You can also head out to the village of Aksakovo for a beautiful two-hour troika ride. Further afield, the historic towns of Vladimir and Suzdal are graced by splendid cathedrals and monasteries attesting that they were the seat of a principality when Moscow was merely an encampment. Suzdal is one of the loveliest towns in Russia, and definitely merits an overnight stay. It's also possible to visit the Aviation Museum at Monino air base, en route to Vladimir, if you take the trouble to get permission ahead of time.

While Moscow's Bolshoy Ballet (also spelt "Bolshoi") is going through uncertain times, plagued by infighting and rivalries (not least the recent acid attack on Artistic Director Sergei Filin), few would deny themselves the chance to see this legendary company. During the season, evening performances start at 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at noon; there are no shows on Monday.

You can see what’s on currently and for a few months ahead on the Bolshoy’s website – although the English version sometimes lags behind the Russian one. The ballet company is usually abroad over summer and sometimes also in the autumn, leaving the junior corps de ballet to entertain visitors – although star dancers are certain to be in Moscow for the opening of the new season in September. Built as a symbol of gratitude to divinity for having aided the Russians’ defeat of Napoleon in 1812, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (daily 10am–6pm), opposite the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 15, was demolished in 1931 in favour of a monument to socialism. The project was soon abandoned and years later, under Krushev’s rule, the site was turned into the world’s largest public swimming pool. In 1994 the Cathedral was rebuilt and is now a symbol of Moscow’s (and Russia’s) post-Communist religious revival.

Moscow isn’t a city that goes to bed early. Many venues act as a café by day, restaurant in the early evening, and both bar and club at night. This can cover anything from an arthouse café with a spot of live music to a dance warehouse, or a fancy nightclub with a restaurant and casino. Most cater to a certain crowd, whether it’s creative professionals, students, shell-suited "flatheads" or designer-draped models. While formal dress codes are rare, face control (feys kontrol) is widespread. Russians distinguish between “democratic” face control (aimed at keeping out hooligans and bandits), and the kind that favours the rich (never mind how they behave). It’s unwise to rile club security staff, however rude they might be.

There are scores of trendy bars and clubs on Krasny Oktyabr, a former chocolate factory building located across the river from Kropotkinskaya and now home to some of Moscow’s hippest nightlife.

Moscow's gastronomic scene has improved enormously over the last five years, with hundreds of new cafés and restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine and surroundings, aimed at anyone with a disposable income – from mega-rich New Russians and expense-account expatriates to fashion-conscious wealthy teenagers.

For cheap eats head to a canteen, where you can compile a tray of dishes smorgasbord-style. Take advantage of the great-value business lunches offered by cafés and restaurants during the week between noon and 4pm.

For well over a century, Moscow has been one of the world’s great centres of classical music, opera and ballet, most famously represented by the Bolshoy Theatre but also by its orchestras and choirs. Theatre can be tricky for non-Russian speakers though circus and puppetry surpass the language barrier. Moscow’s film industry and annual international film festival dwarf St Petersburg’s, but at other times most cinemas screen Hollywood blockbusters.

All this can be surprisingly good value, provided you ask for the cheapest ticket available ( samiy deshoviy bilyet ).

Gorky Park on ul. Krymskiy Val 9 (R100; Park Kultury) is a large park occupying an area of over 700 acres along the river. In the winter the frozen-over paths become one of the city’s largest ice rinks, while in the summer Muscovites stroll the area savouring an ice cream.

Admirers of Bulgakov, Chekhov, Gorky and Tolstoy will find their former homes preserved as museums. Anton Chekhov lived at Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya ul. 6, in what is now the Chekhov House-Museum (Tues, Thurs & Sat 11am–6pm, Wed & Fri 2–8pm; R100, student R60; Barrikadnaya), containing humble personal effects, while the Gorky House-Museum (Wed–Sun 11am–6pm, closed last Thurs of the month; free; Arbatskaya) on the corner of Povarskaya ulitsa and ulitsa Spiridonovka is worth seeing purely for its raspberry-pink Art Nouveau decor. Leo Tolstoy admirers should head to the wonderfully preserved Tolstoy Memorial Estate on ul. Lva Tolstogo 21 (Tues, Wed & Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs 1–9pm, Sat & Sun 11am–6pm; R200, student R60; Park Kultury) where the Tolstoy family lived after moving to Moscow from their country estate in 1881, and where the novelist wrote War and Peace . The Bulgakov Museum at Bolshaya Sadovaya ul. 10 (Sun–Thurs 1–11pm, Fri & Sat until 1am; free; t 495/970-0619; Mayakovskaya), is the house where the novelist lived from 1921 to 1924. There are nightly tours (1–6am; R550; phone a week in advance for tour in English).

The Museum of Modern History at Tverskaya ul. 21 (Tues, Wed, Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs & Sat 11am–7pm, Sun 10am–5pm, closed last Fri of the month; R100; Tverskaya) brings the Communist past alive with striking displays of Soviet propaganda posters, photographs and state gifts, although there’s a frustrating lack of English translation.

Opposite the entrance to Gorky Park at Krymskiy Val 10, the New Tretyakov Gallery (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Park Kultury) takes a breakneck gallop through twentieth-century Russian art, from the avant-garde of the 1910–1920s to contemporary artists. Full and illuminating commentary in English is a bonus.

A cluster of shining domes above a fortified rampart belongs to the lovely Novodevichiy Convent (daily 10am–5pm; closed Tues & last Mon of month; R150; Sportivnaya), founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1524. At its heart stands the white Cathedral of the Virgin of Smolensk. In its cemetery lie numerous famous writers, musicians and artists, including Gogol, Chekhov, Stanislavsky, Bulgakov and Shostakovich.

One of Moscow’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Patriarch’s Ponds is a pleasant spot (there’s actually just one pond) for a summer stroll or an ice-skate on its frozen waters in the depths of winter. The area is also known for being the location of the opening scene of Mikhail Bulgakov’s magical realist novel The Master and Margarita .

Founded in 1898 in honour of the famous Russian poet, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 12 (Tues–Sun 10am–7pm; R150–300, separate fee for Impressionist wing; Kropotkinskaya) holds a hefty collection of European paintings , from Italian High Renaissance works to Rembrandt, and an outstanding display of Impressionist works.

Get the city grit out of your skin at the exquisitely elaborate Sandunovsky baths (Neglinnaya ul. 14 bldg 3–7 w www.sanduny.ru ; Teatralnaya), patronized by Muscovites since 1896. Join Russian businessmen and socialites in the banya , a wooden hut heated with a furnace, where you are invited to sweat out impurities, get beaten energetically with birch twigs, and finally plunge into ice-cold water. Men’s and women’s baths are separate, with the women’s section more like a modern spa. A three-hour session costs R1000. Daily 8am–10pm.

Founded in 1892 by the financier Pavel Tretyakov, the Tretyakov Gallery at Lavrushinskiy per. 10 (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Tretyakovskaya) displays an outstanding collection of pre-Revolutionary Russian art. Russian icons are magnificently displayed, and the exhibition continues through to the late nineteenth century, with the politically charged canvases of the iconic realist Ilya Repin and the Impressionist portraits of Valentin Serov, including The Girl with Peaches , one of the gallery’s masterpieces.

To see Soviet triumphalism at its most prolific, visit the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, or VDNKh (Prospekt Mira; VDNK/Prospekt Mira), with its statue upon statue of ordinary workers in heroic poses. Adding to the scene is the permanent trade-fair-cum-shopping-centre housed in the grandiose Stalinist architecture of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition of 1939, and the People’s Friendship Fountain, flanked by Soviet maidens, each symbolizing a Soviet republic. One of the most hubristic Soviet monuments ever built is the Space Obelisk , which bears witness to Soviet designs on the stratosphere. Unveiled in 1964 – three years after Gagarin orbited the earth – it’s a sculpture of a rocket blasting nearly 100m into the sky on a plume of energy clad in shining titanium. Moscow’s giant Ferris wheel, small amusement park and numerous food vendors help to create a fairground-like atmosphere. For a fantastic view over the VDNK, take the lift to the 25th floor of Hotel Cosmos across Prospekt Mira.
