Rewind: Previous Lions Tours

1904: The tourists who awoke the beast

The Lions from the start confronted issues which complicate their existence, and in some cases have persisted to this day. Not the least of their difficulties was raising a half-decent team. The time taken to travel to and from New Zealand in the age before air travel meant that the only players who could accept a tour invitation were those who could afford several months off work.

1908: An unmitigated shambles

The 1908 tour of New Zealand is something of an anomaly. The squad was described, correctly, at the time as an Anglo-Welsh team. It played in red shirts with white hoops and attempted to counter the haka with a 'war cry' consisting of the words "Rule Britannia, Cymru am Byth (both repeated three times) hip, hip, hurrah (also repeated three times)".

1930: The tour remembered most for its manager Bim Baxter

Some Lions tours are associated with particular players, often captains, in the way that the undefeated 1974 team in South Africa will for ever more be identified with Willie John McBride. With others it is coaches -- Carwyn James in 1971 or Clive Woodward in 2005. But the 1930 party which visited New Zealand is remembered most of all for its manager, the forthright James 'Bim' Baxter.

1950: The Lions who revitalised New Zealand rugby

The team of 1950 were the first modern Lions, recognisable except in the matter of playing 30 matches to the eyes of 2017. They adopted the red shirts which are now as synonymous with them as gold is with Australian rugby and Brazilian football, also late adopters. And they were much more representative than their predecessors of the strength of British and Irish rugby.

1959: 'Attacking, silly rugby' that won Kiwi hearts

No British & Irish Lions party can have departed with less reason to hope, but few have returned to greater acclaim than Ronnie Dawson's 1959 team. They did not win the Test series, but could claim to have got closer to beating New Zealand than any of their predecessors.

1966: 'Haphazard' Lions continue decade to forget

The 1966 Lions could have got everything right and still lost their Test series against the All Blacks. By ultimately they were the co-conspirators in their own downfall.

1971: The Lions that stand alone in history

The Lions team of 1971 stands out from the other 11 which have visited New Zealand by virtue of one fact -- they won.

1977: Injuries, intolerable hope & relations

Measured purely by results the 1977 British & Irish Lions were among the most successful visitors to New Zealand, winning one Test out of four and coming within minutes of sharing the series. But it certainly was not seen that way at the time. Few if any Lions teams have been quite such a disappointment.

1983: The tour that began in hope but ended in calamity

The 1983 Lions tour of New Zealand looks to modern eyes like a marathon, an 18-match expedition including four tests. But to contemporaries, not least the Lions management team of Willie John McBride and coach Jim Telfer, who had been team-mates on the 35-match trip to New Zealand, Australia and Canada in 1966, it looked more like a sprint.

1993: The tour of great missed opportunity

The 1993 British Lions tour to New Zealand, the first for a decade, the last by players who were still officially amateur and the first since 1908 with only three Tests rather than four, comes into the category of 'missed opportunities'. Like the squad who visited Australia four years earlier they went into the final Test with a chance to win the series, but they didn't.

2005: The tour that threatened the Lions' existence

The most recent British & Irish Lions trip to New Zealand is by definition the most vividly remembered, not least by those of us who were lucky enough to be there. Yet it was at the time a venture whose failure, with a comprehensive whitewashing in the tests, seemed to threaten the future of the Lions.

From The Vaults

A Lions tour involves vast amounts of preparation and a numerous tactical discussions. Ahead of this year's tour in New Zealand, let's take a look at how things were done nearly seventy years ago. This tactics board (pictured above) was handmade by HMS Fisgard Artificer Apprentices in 1950 and was used on the 1950 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand and Australia. The remarkably detailed set includes fifteen miniature Lions and fifteen miniature All Blacks, as well as posts, corner flags and even a referee. The board would have been used to develop tactics on the long voyage by sea to Australia and New Zealand. Although as you can see from the photos below, the touring party found other ways to occupy themselves as well!

It is not quite clear why the apprentices made the board, although there are several ways in which its production may have been instigated. Lewis Jones, one of the 1950 Lions was based at HMS Fisgard and Malcolm Thomas (another Lion) was based nearby at HMS Raleigh. Captain Morrell was in charge at Fisgard and was a keen rugby man who had played for the Navy rugby team. The HMS Fisgard Artificer Apprentices presented the board to the RFU after the tour. The donation was probably instigated the Surgeon Captain 'Ginger' Osborne, manager of the 1950 Tour, whose collected papers of the tour are part of the World Rugby Museum's collection.

Future lions tours will change - nz rugby.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew has rubbished suggestions the current British and Irish Lions tour will be the last but says future visits are unlikely to include so many games.

Several pundits and former players have said the congested global calendar, and pressure from English and Celtic-nation club teams, might spell the end for the four-yearly tours by the combined side to face the southern hemisphere heavyweights.

The Lions are expected to tour South Africa in 2021 and Australia four years later before returning to New Zealand in 2029.

"We negotiated a new 12-year international calendar with Lions tours factored into that calendar," Tew told NZME, referring to the new global calendar that was signed-off on earlier this year.

"I'm confident that we'll see the Lions back here in the normal schedule that we've got going."

Tew added, however, that future tours were unlikely to have such a packed schedule. The current tour has been heavily criticised with 10 matches scheduled, including games against all five Super Rugby sides, with former Lions and All Blacks coach Graham Henry calling the itinerary "suicidal".

"I think it's reasonable to expect that we probably won't see a 10 game-tour again, the calendar is just too full.

"We have a strong view of what the minimum looks like, and that is around eight," he added.

Tew has said previously that the Lions had requested the games against the Super Rugby sides to help prepare for the intensity of the three test matches.

The tourists played their first tour game less than four days after arriving in the country and were pilloried for an abject performance in a 13-7 victory over the semi-professional Provincial Barbarians.

Warren Gatland said jet lag had been an issue but the Lions coach had chosen to prepare the bulk of his squad in Britain and fly the entire team out after the European club finals, ensuring they only arrived in the week of the first game.

"There are obviously things that need to be considered going into the next series of Lions tours," Tew said.

"They need a longer preparation clearly than they had this year, they could have done that themselves, they could easily have brought the majority of the squad over to play the Barbarians game and just left the guys playing the club finals behind, and join later."

All Blacks captain Kieran Read said the tours were great for the game and pointed to the 20,000 Lions fans who descended on New Zealand as a reason why they should not be scrapped.

"I don't think that will happen," Read told reporters ahead of the second test in Wellington.

"It has just been so exciting being around the country over the last couple of weeks and seeing the supporters from both sides.

"The fans are so passionate about the game. I'm sure it will continue."

British and Irish Lions to announce head coach for 2025 tour to Australia today: Who could it be?

Sky Sports will broadcast eighth consecutive Lions tour dating back to 1997 with exclusive rights to 2025 tour of Australia June 28-August 2; new Lions coach announced from 1pm today; Wales' Warren Gatland ruled himself out in October; Ireland's Andy Farrell favourite for the role

Steve Borthwick, Andy Farrell, Gregor Townsend

The British and Irish Lions will announce their head coach for the 2025 tour to Australia, live on Sky Sports , today from 1pm.

Warren Gatland announced in October he will not be putting his name forward to coach the Lions for a fourth time, and backed Ireland head coach Andy Farrell to do so.

The Wales head coach led the Lions on their last three tours to Australia (2013), New Zealand (2017) and South Africa (2021), picking up a series win, draw and loss respectively.

Keep across Sky Sports News and Sky Sports' digital platforms from 1pm on Thursday to hear news first of the next Lions head coach.

  • Warren Gatland backs Andy Farrell to coach Lions in 2025
  • Sam Warburton: Andy Farrell, Gregor Townsend, Steve Borthwick potential next Lions coach
  • British and Irish Lions to play in Ireland for first time ahead of 2025 Australia tour

Who could the next coach be? Sam Warburton, Lions skipper in 2013 and 2017, told Sky Sports the choice comes down to three in Ireland head coach Farrell, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend and England's Steve Borthwick, and there's been very little suggestion of anyone else as an option outside of that.

Andy Farrell to take the Lions reigns?

The hottest of hot favourites for the role, Farrell has done a superb job as head coach of Ireland since leading them into the 2020 Six Nations.

Under the 48-year-old, Ireland accomplished near enough everything they could leading up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. A Six Nations Triple Crown (2022), historic 2-1 series victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand (2022), Six Nations Grand Slam (2023), and firm world No 1 ranking after victories over every side in the world as part of a 17-Test winning run.

As such, they entered the World Cup in France as one of the top favourites, albeit having been drawn onto the tough side of the draw, and though they defeated eventual champions South Africa in Pool B, they lost in dramatic fashion to New Zealand 28-24 at the quarter-final stage.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell

That result aside, Farrell has led Ireland to tremendous success and done so playing a brand of exciting, attacking rugby, implementing a style of play completely at odds with the largely negative type of attack under Ireland predecessor Joe Schmidt.

He has received accolades around the world as a consequence, and it was telling his latest contract signing with the IRFU in December through to 2027 came with confirmation he had their blessing to coach the Lions during his contract.

Farrell also played major roles on successful Lions tours in 2013 and 2017 as defence coach, and so has been engrained in and a central part of the Lions environment previous to now.

British and Irish Lions 2025 tour schedule

Could scotland's townsend step up.

During the summer of 2021, Gregor Townsend was brought in by Gatland as British and Irish Lions attack coach for their behind-closed-doors tour of South Africa.

Townsend appeared to have a big say on the tour too, with eight Scots selected, and was trusted to make a number of big calls within the backs.

Finn Russell, Dan Biggar and then a young Marcus Smith were selected to tour over Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, while scrum-half Ali Price started two of the Tests over the experienced Conor Murray - who had been named tour captain by Gatland at one stage during the tour when Alun Wyn Jones appeared out due to injury before recovering.

Outside centre Chris Harris, wing Duhan van der Merwe and full-back Stuart Hogg also started Tests against the Springboks, with the likes of Liam Williams, Owen Farrell, Bundee Aki, Josh Adams, Louis Rees-Zammit and Elliot Daly missing out at different points.

In the end, a strange series filled with controversy, incident, no atmosphere and huge toxicity led by South Africa's Rassie Erasmus did not go the Lions' way, with Gatland, Townsend and the rest of the coaching staff widely considered to have lost a series they should have won due to poor selections.

British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton in 2013

With Scotland, Townsend has fought back from the brink of almost losing his job to securing a number of noteworthy wins, while just falling short of title challenges.

The fact his Scotland side suffered a second consecutive World Cup pool stage elimination will not have done his Lions hopes much chances either.

Too soon for Borthwick?

For many, the jury is still out on whether Steve Borthwick is the right man for England, and whether he will succeed in the role. With that in mind, it would seem extremely unlikely he will take over as Lions head coach at this point.

What is in Borthwick's favour is that he was Lions forwards coach on the memorable 2017 tour to New Zealand, when the tourists faced the double-world champion All Blacks as massive underdogs, and after losing the opening Test, fought back to win the second and draw the third.

England head coach Steve Borthwick

Borthwick worked alongside former England head coach Eddie Jones as forwards coach for eight years with Japan and then England, before taking over at Leicester Tigers in 2020 for his first head coach role.

Borthwick transformed Leicester from Premiership relegation candidates to champions by 2022, convincing the RFU to sack Jones and hire the former Saracens second row for England.

It has been far from a honeymoon so far, however. His first Six Nations saw Scotland win at Twickenham, France score 53 points at Twickenham, and Ireland brush them aside in Dublin to win a Grand Slam.

In the summer, England lost to a struggling Wales side in Cardiff, then lost again to Ireland in Dublin, before ending their August window by losing at home to Fiji at Twickenham for the first time in history.

At the World Cup, England were drawn on the softer side of the draw away from the world's top four sides in Ireland, France, South Africa and New Zealand, but stuttered through their pool after an impressive initial win over Argentina with 14 players, not performing well against Japan, and winning a Test against Samoa they should have lost.

Even England's quarter-final win over Fiji was exceptionally nervy, and locked at 24-24 until eight minutes to play. Borthwick remains a coach with plenty to prove at Test level.

Sky Sports to show 2025 British & Irish Lions tour of Australia

Sky Sports will exclusively show the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, with all three Tests and six warm-up matches to be shown live.

The agreement sees Sky Sports broadcast its eighth consecutive Lions Tour, with the partnership starting in 1997 with the iconic 2-1 series win over South Africa.

The Lions tasted success the last time they were on Australian soil in 2013, with a dramatic 2-1 series win following a memorable performance in the decisive final Test.

Having been defeated in a Covid-impacted tour of South Africa back in 2021, the Lions will be aiming to make it a second successive series win in Australia as they kick off the first Test at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

The Lions will play nine games on tour all around Australia, beginning against Western Force in Perth on June 28 2025.

Further tour games follow against Queensland Reds in Brisbane on July 2, the Waratahs in Sydney on July 5, the Brumbies in Canberra on July 9, an Invitational Australia & New Zealand side in Adelaide on July 12 and the Rebels in Melbourne on July 22.

That game will take place after the opening Test in Brisbane on July 19, with the second Test at the MCG in Melbourne on July 26 and the final Test in the Accor Stadium in Sydney on August 2.

The Lions will also play in Ireland for the first time as they take on Argentina in a June 2025 warm-up fixture, also live on Sky Sports, ahead of their tour of Australia.

The fixture against Argentina at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday June 20 follows the Lions beating Japan in an inaugural 1888 Cup contest in Edinburgh ahead of their 2021 tour of South Africa.

"The opportunity to play in Dublin at Aviva Stadium in front of over 50,000 Lions fans will make for a great occasion and the perfect send-off," Lions chief executive Ben Calveley said.

"British & Irish Lions Tours have a rich heritage built over 130 years of touring but alongside our strong history which we are very proud of, it is important that we look for ways in which to evolve our Tours."

While the last of the Lions' three tours of Argentina came in 1936, the last fixture between the sides ended in a 25-25 draw as they faced off in Cardiff in 2005.

'You can see progress' - Australia will be ready to challenge British and Irish Lions in 2025, says Wallabies chief

Alasdair Mackenzie

Published 12/09/2024 at 13:58 GMT

The British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in 2025 has caused some concerns due to the dire recent form of the host nation. Fears of a one-sided series heightened further on Saturday when the Wallabies suffered a record 67-27 defeat against Argentina. But Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh insists "the progress is there" and "there is plenty of time" to build a competitive side.

Israel Dagg claps back at Ben Youngs over his call for the British and Irish Lions to tour South Africa

England scrum-half Ben Youngs and ex-All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg.

Israel Dagg has hit out ex-England scrum-half Ben Youngs.

Former All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg has hit out ex-England scrum-half Ben Youngs for his comments around Australia’s struggles.

Youngs was highly critical of the Wallabies following their defeat to Argentina in the Rugby Championship and suggested that the British and Irish Lions should rather tour South Africa next year.

Fellow former England international, Andy Goode made the same plea as he also expects the British and Irish Lions to comfortably dispatch the Wallabies.

The remarks hit a nerve with Rugby Australia boss Phil Waugh and did so with Dagg who took a shot at Youngs.

Pleas for Lions to go to South Africa

Speaking on his podcast For the Love of Rugby , Youngs slammed the Wallabies’ performance in their 67-27 defeat to Argentina and stated that Australian Rugby is in a ‘proper dark’ state.

“I’m looking at and thinking the Lions are better off going to South Africa and touring there. Given that the last time they went there was no fans allowed,” Youngs said.

”I don’t know, maybe we’ll just do a reunion of 2013 and we’ll just go f***ing do the business on them – get all the lads out of retirement.

“Just bits to their game which are just so naive.”

‘The Lions are better off going to South Africa’ – England centurion rips into ‘proper dark’ state of Australian rugby

Ex-fly-half Goode said that a ‘campaign’ should be started for the Lions to change their tour schedule and head to South Africa after the 2021 tour was played behind closed doors.

“Australia were 20 points to three up at the weekend and then got hosed 67-27,” Goode said on the Rugby Pod .

“Can we campaign for the Lions to flip the tour and go to South Africa, please? It can’t happen but if you’re the Lions now at the end of the season and you’re picking anyone to play it’s South Africa.”

‘Australia are sh*te’ – Ex-internationals ‘campaign’ for British and Irish Lions to tour South Africa instead

In response to the comments, Waugh told the Syndey Morning Herald: “I am confident we are putting in place the systems, structure and discipline that sets the Test team up for success.”

He added: “You can see the progress is there. It is not nearly where we need it to be, but if we keep progressing at the speed with which we have moved things in the last six months, then there is plenty of time [before the Lions series].”

Rugby Australia boss’ forthright view on calls for Lions to skip series against Wallabies

Dagg hits back

Meanwhile, Dagg has returned serve on behalf of his trans-Tasman neighbours and rued the fact that Waugh responded to such talk.

“Right now it has been so bloody bad,” he said in reference to the state of Super Rugby and Australian rugby on SENZ radio .

“And Ben Youngs has fired attacks at Rugby Australia, the England star says the Lions should tour South Africa instead and then Phil Waugh has bit.

“I said mate don’t bite don’t bite just keep silent and keep going about your work.”

“The reality is that the British and Irish Lions are going to be the majority of the Irish team so I don’t know what Ben Youngs is on about,” he added.

The Lions are set to tackle Argentina on June 20, 2025 in Dublin before heading to Australia for the three-match Test Series.

Andy Farrell’s side will also face the Western Force, Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs, ACT Brumbies and an invitational AU and NZ team.

Following the collapse of the Melbourne Rebels, there is still one fixture on the Lions schedule that needs to be filled which will be the midweek game between the first and second Test.

Australian rugby chief Phil Waugh has dismissed fears that next summer’s British and Irish Lions series could be uncompetitive, insisting that the Wallabies are making “progress” despite a record defeat to Argentina.

Joe Schmidt ’s Australia were thrashed 67-27 by the Pumas to continue a difficult Rugby Championship campaign and now face back-to-back Bledisloe Cup encounters with New Zealand.

It follows a pool stage exit from last year’s World Cup under Eddie Jones, who subsequently departed for Japan, while this year has also seen the Melbourne Rebels fold amid financial issues.

Worries have therefore grown that next summer’s tour could lose lustre with Andy Farrell’s Lions strong favourites to sweep their hosts.

But Waugh, capped 79 times by the Wallabies during his playing career believes there is “plenty of time” for Schmidt to arrest the slide and turn Australia around.

“You can see the progress is there,” Rugby Australia chief executive Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald . “It is not nearly where we need it to be, but if we keep progressing at the speed with which we have moved things in the last six months, then there is plenty of time.

“It is a team that is, and I hate using the word ‘re-building’, but it is a team that is re-setting, and it takes experiences in big moments to get better.

Australia suffered a damaging defeat to Argentina in Santa Fe

“Obviously the enormity of the scoreline in that second half [against Argentina] was disappointing. But there is context that is important... we are not the most experienced team in world rugby, and we are building that experience.”

Having snatched victory a week prior with the final kick, Australia led 20-3 in Santa Fe before Argentina surged away impressively.

They now host New Zealand in Sydney before heading to Wellington for a second meeting with their trans-Tasman rivals on the final weekend of the Rugby Championship.

Australia’s autumn itinerary consists of Tests against all four of the constitutent Lions unions, beginning with an encounter with England at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on 9 November.

Schmidt is set to be boosted by the availability of code-hopper Joseph Sua’ali’i, who has been lured across from the NRL in a big-money move.

NRL superstar Joseph Sua’ali’i is set to join up with the Wallabies ahead of their tour of Europe

“I’m going on that [Wallabies] spring tour at end of the year, I know that, but I’m not sure when my first game will be,” the 21-year-old confirmed.
