How much time should you spend at the art museum, and how close is it to that bookstore you want to check out? And how can you keep all your ideas and bookings neatly organized?

The best trip planner apps can help you answer those questions. I’ve found several that will help you discover the right places to go and organize your day-by-day itinerary in one handy place. Download these apps, and you can pitch your endless spreadsheets and Word docs into the recycle bin.

All of the following trip planner apps are free unless otherwise noted.

TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor ( iOS | Android ) is the granddaddy of trip planner apps. Unlike other apps that feature only major cities, TripAdvisor offers listings of both top attractions and hidden gems in just about every corner of the globe, along with restaurants, hotels, and vacation rentals. You can create customized itineraries by saving the places you’re interested in to the app’s new Trips feature . (Trips can be kept private or shared publicly.)

When you search for a city in the app, you’ll see a feed of other users’ trips, photos, videos, reviews, and articles about that destination, all offering ideas and inspiration. For more trip planning help, you can post your questions in the TripAdvisor forums , where destination experts offer in-depth advice.

Visit a City

Visit a City ( iOS | Android ) helps solve two common trip planning challenges: figuring out how long you need to spend at each place, and maximizing your vacation time by grouping nearby attractions together. When you select a destination, the app offers recommended sightseeing guides based on the number of days you plan to spend. For example, I put in that I was going to Paris, for three days and was given several itinerary options, including Top Attractions, Landmarks for Kids, Parks & Museums, Easy Going, and more. The app automatically puts nearby attractions together and lets you know how far apart they are (for instance, “three minutes by walking”). It also includes the estimated time that you’ll spend at each place.

You can edit the itinerary by changing the day you visit a place, revising the amount of time you spend there, or deleting the attraction altogether. (You’ll almost certainly have to do some editing, as the itineraries don’t include lunch or coffee breaks.) You can also book tours through the app and get general travel information about the destination, such as the best time of year to visit or tips for saving money.

The Best Sites to Book a Last Minute Vacation

CityMaps2Go

CityMaps2Go ( iOS | Android ) offers a handy offline maps that you can customize with personal points of interest. Even better, the app displays your location on the map whether you’re connected to data or Wi-Fi. The app includes thousands of offline maps from just about anywhere on Earth, which means it’s useful for travelers who don’t want to pay international data charges when heading overseas. 

You can create different lists for your trip (for example, separate lists for dining, bars, attractions, etc.), and the locations you add to the list will show up on your map. Info cards for each place include a review score, nearby accommodations, some basic information, and the ability to add notes of your own.

The fun part of trip planning is imagining all the cool places you’ll go. What’s not so fun? Figuring out the logistics of getting there. Fortunately, Rome2rio ( iOS | Android ) can help solve that problem. The app searches just about every mode of transportation—plane, train, subway, bus, ferry, taxi, Uber—to recommend the best way to get from point A to point B.

You can enter either two destinations within a given city or two points farther apart, and the app will display your options, including the time it’ll take to travel and the approximate cost. Note that the listings are for planning purposes only, and you can’t actually book your flights or tickets through the app.

TripIt ( iOS | Android ) is a fixture on “best travel apps” lists, and for good reason. It turns an inbox full of scattered booking confirmations and restaurant reservations into a single master itinerary that you can access offline, sync with your phone’s calendar, and share with loved ones. You simply forward each confirmation email to [email protected] and let the app do the rest.

Upgrade to TripIt Pro ($49/year) for other useful features such as real-time flight alerts, rewards program tracking, and the ability to locate alternate flights if your original plans are disrupted.

Culture Trip

The app arm of Culture Trip ( iOS | Android ) aims to bring travelers a little bit out of the mainstream (tagline: “For curious travelers”) by highlighting unique, off-the-beaten-path options in popular destinations. With recommendations for more than 200 destinations around the world, it’s a great way to bring more local perspective to your trip planning. 

The Culture Trip app uses the publication’s content as a starting point; say, an article on the Top 9 Dessert Spots in Amsterdam. While reading the article, you can save individual places to lists that you create and view their location on maps. You can also explore their curated “Culture Trips”—pre-made itineraries for small group travel bookable within the app.

5 Smartphone Essentials You Should Never Travel Without

TripScout ( iOS ) combines articles and videos from well-known travel publishers and local experts to form what it calls “a personalized, always up-to-date travel guide” for destinations around the world. Every point of interest mentioned in the content is mapped, so you can build a customized itinerary showing your intended destinations on a map.

TripScout can also personalize recommendations based on your travel dates, budget, interests, and even the number of people in your travel group. And like some of the other apps on this list, TripScout works entirely offline, potentially saving you from paying international data fees. The only downside? Android users are left out; TripScout is iOS only.

Lonely Planet is an extremely well-known travel guide brand. Recently, they launched an app, Lonely Planet Guides, that is quickly becoming one of the  best travel planner apps. Itinerary Maps and Lists

When you find activities you want to try, landmarks you intend to visit, and restaurants you wish to dine at, you can add them to a map and list. By adding these things to a map, you can easily see where everything you want to do is located, and develop day-by-day plans. Unfortunately, you can’t create an actual day-to-day itinerary via Tripadvisor. 

Who Is Tripadvisor For? 

This app is great for learning more about attractions, landmarks, restaurants, and accommodation via reviews. If you like to hear opinions from real travelers before committing to plans, you’ll appreciate Tripadvisor. It also has amazing discovery features, making Tripadvisor ideal for travelers that are looking for suggestions on things to do in the locations they’re visiting. 

Who Is Tripadvisor Not For? 

Tripadvisor isn’t ideal for planning day-to-day itineraries. While you can create maps and lists of all the places you want to go, these can’t be separated into individual days. That can be frustrating for travelers, especially if going on a multi-day or week trip.

Inspirock is a free travel itinerary planning  software that creates day-to-day itineraries for you based on data you input. Jubel is one of the great itinerary planning apps for those that are looking to discover new destinations. You start by answering a questionnaire to highlight travel likes, dislikes, and other preferences. A customized itinerary for a surprise destination is then created for you. This service does come at a cost, with Jubel users needing a trip budget of at least $1,500 for a solo-traveler trip or $1,100/per traveler for multi-person trips. 

Pilot 

Pilot is one of the free travel planner apps that’s perfect for travelers wanting to create itineraries as a group. You can add travel information, like flight bookings, to your online account, along with adding the activities you’ll do each day to an itinerary. It’s also easy to collaborate on one trip itinerary as a group. As mentioned, Pilot is free to use, but there is not a mobile app, so you must use the software in-browser.

If you’re looking for an app, this might not be the travel planner solution for you. GEOVEA’s main drawback is that it’s only a web-based platform, although travel content can be viewed using mobile.

Secondly, it’s not a platform for collaboration to plan trips in groups, although itineraries are shareable.

Third, it's not super flexible. So if you like to plan your trip your way, you might just be better off with some of the other options on this list.

Lastly, although its user interface is detailed, it can be a little clunky and not very appealing.

If you want any control over planning your trip, Tripadvisor is certainly not the app for you. The trip planner from Tripadvisor is not very user-friendly and fun to use.

For example, it’s almost impossible to import other bookings or information into your travel planner.

You can share your trips with friends and let them help you plan your trips but the collaboration features aren’t very advanced.

So, so good. The best itinerary app ever

This app has made my life so much easier, and I couldn’t be more impressed with it. I travel a lot and sort all the bookings out myself through multiple different websites, which previously used to make keeping on top of my itinerary a bit of a chore, especially when travelling in areas outside of wifi / mobile data. Tripit automatically retrieves all my booking info through my email without me having to do anything at all, and compiles it into a sleek, user-friendly, easy-to-navigate itinerary that updates itself in real time with gate and terminal info and saves for offline use. It is also quick and easy to check in online for flights through the app, and it retrieves and copies all the booking confirmation codes for you to save you having to dig around in your email for them. Sharing travel info with friends and family is easy and very clear. I am very very happy with how much work this app saves me and how much smoother it makes all my travelling. I have a couple of suggestions for improvements in the future... recently I cancelled a hotel booking and it wasn’t as easy to remove a cancelled item from my itinerary as I’d hoped. I had another one but I can’t remember what it is now, can’t have been that good I suppose. Cheers Tripit for making my itinerant life a breeze.

Excellent App

Have been using this app for several years now. Excellent. What would be a good addition (unless it is there and I have missed it) is a copy option to repeat a previous entry into the same trip. I can see you can copy into a new trip but I can’t find an option to copy the same information to the next day for example or to another location in the same travel itinerary. I often just add an activity with nothing more than a title of LEISURE for when I dont have a specific thing planned at the time of creating the itinerary. For example staying in one location for seven days and I just create the LEISURE activity title for each of the seven days. It would be great to create one and say be able to copy that entry forward for several days. Another Suggestion: Option to move the entire trip to new dates for those occaisons where you need to cancel but still want to take the trip exactly as created but on a later start date. Auto adjusting all dates would be useful. COVID19 is a great example of having to cancel now but want to do the exact trip in the future. Great App though and I use it all the time for all our travel, business and pleasure.

Fantastic travel app

Amazing app for automatically storing all travel & accommodation details in the one place and giving a simple overview of an upcoming trip as well as recording all previous trips. You can set it to monitor your email inbox and it will add flights/accommodation/etc automatically, alternately you can forward any email you want it to file and it identifies the data in the email and adds it to your trip. They have perfected the free vs paid model - something that many apps fail dismally. Keep doing this well and you will keep growing in the future. The free version (which I have used for many years) works completely without restricting your use of the app or bombarding you with ads or videos. The paid version has extra features which benefit frequent travellers (as well as those that are time-poor) such as advising of gate changes and if lower fares become available for a flight, potentiality saving them much more money than the subscription price.

Thanks to longer driving ranges and a vast increase in charging opportunities — even in rural communities — electric-vehicle range anxiety  gives way to a "go for it" attitude regarding EV road-tripping. EV owners can comfortably plan longer journeys by using route-planning apps and fast-charging stations, and by adjusting their driving habits.

Use Apps for Your Next EV Road Trip

The latest EVs, such as the Lucid Air luxury sedan, can offer more than 500 miles of range, making an extended voyage feasible. Tesla's proprietary Supercharger network  can also assist with long-distance trips.

If you own a non-Tesla EV, you may have a preferential arrangement or subscription with one of the major charging networks, such as ChargePoint , Electrify America , EVgo , and others. Their respective apps may help determine the availability of charging stations along your road trip route.

Today's EV charging network is somewhat scattered across the country. To accurately measure how far you can travel before recharging, enter your destination on a trip-planning app, such as A Better Routeplanner or ChargeHub , and get a detailed overview of where to stop and charge and for how long.

Alternatively, EVHotels lists accommodations that also feature overnight charging stations.

Another favorite crowd-sourced app is PlugShare , which will allow you to plan a trip and see every charger along your route.

Google Maps is also gradually improving its capabilities to help with EV road trips, highlighting routes with faster chargers.

How Far and Where I Can Travel in My EV

Once you've picked a route, the fundamental limitations are the range of your vehicle and the availability of higher-speed charging opportunities. You'll have to contend with the issues related to the increasing popularity of EVs, starting with busy charging stations. There may be other challenges, too, such as the unreliable nature of more than a half-dozen competing EV charging companies and various still-emerging technologies.

When driving in remote areas, be aware that charging stations sometimes require cell phone service to activate those apps and initiate a charge.

While Tesla owners can benefit from access to the company's widespread Supercharger and Destination Chargers network, the automaker has begun to offer limited charging access to owners of non-Tesla EVs.

Other Considerations When Planning an EV Road Trip

New EV hardware and technologies, such as heat pumps and ever-improving batteries , are helping to make longer road trips more reliable and convenient year-round. But weather can still be a major factor in how far you may or may not be able to drive your EV.

If you head out in the middle of a freezing winter, colder temperatures can decrease the total range of your EV by as much as 30% or more. Running your EV's heater and accessories to stay comfortable during your trip can drastically reduce your total range. Similarly, high temperatures can strain your EV's systems and charging capabilities in the summer. See if you can charge in a shaded area and run your air conditioner.

You'll also achieve a more extended driving range in an EV or a traditional gas-powered car by properly inflating your tires , as lower tire pressures can reduce driving ranges.

The controversial plan to turn a desert green

Ties van der Hoeven’s ambitions are nothing if not grand. The Dutch engineer wants to transform a huge stretch of inhospitable desert into green, fertile land teeming with wildlife.

( CNN) —  Ties van der Hoeven’s ambitions are nothing if not grand. The Dutch engineer wants to transform a huge stretch of inhospitable desert into green, fertile land teeming with wildlife.

His sights are set on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, an arid, triangle-shaped expanse that connects Africa with Asia. Thousands of years ago it was bursting with life, he said, but years of farming and other human activity have helped turn it into a barren desert.

Van der Hoeven is convinced he can bring it back to life.

He has spent years fine tuning an initiative aimed at restoring plant and animal life to roughly 13,500 square miles of the Sinai Peninsula, an area slightly bigger than the state of Maryland. The goal: to suck up planet-heating carbon dioxide, increase rainfall and bring food and jobs to local people.

He believes it is the answer to a slew of huge global problems. “We are destroying our planet in a way which is scary,” he told CNN. “The only holistic way out of this situation is with large-scale ecological regeneration”

So-called desert regreening projects are not new, and this is  one of a number  around the world seeking to transform arid landscapes. Many aim to halt desertification — the creeping degradation of dry lands — a phenomenon the United Nations calls a “ silent, invisible crisis  that is destabilizing communities on a global scale.”

But the concept is also controversial; critics say transforming deserts is unproven, enormously complex and could negatively affect water and weather in ways we cannot predict.

The birth of the plan

Van der Hoeven’s background may seem unlikely for someone intent on saving the world. As a hydraulic engineer at Belgian dredging company DEME, he worked on projects including building artificial islands in Dubai.

But in 2016, the course of his career changed when he was pulled into a venture to help the Egyptian government restore shrinking fish populations in Lake Bardawil, a saltwater lagoon in northern Sinai, separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow sandbar. It used to be more than 100 feet deep but is now less than 10 feet deep in parts, as well as hot and salty.

Within a few weeks, van der Hoeven devised a plan to open up the lagoon by creating tidal inlets and dredging “tidal gullies” to get more seawater flowing through, making it deeper, cooler, less salty and more full of marine life.

But the more he researched, the bigger he wanted to go.

Scanning the terrain in Google Earth, he saw the outline of a network of now dried-up rivers, criss-crossing the Sinai like blood vessels, suggesting this land was once green. He pored over weather models and ecological studies and started to see connections.

He could use the sediments dredged from Lake Bardawil to help regreen the surrounding area. “They are salty but they hold very many nutrients and minerals, which you need to start restoring the land,” he said.

He would start with the wetlands around the lake, expanding them to lure the birds and fish.

Then, he would go higher into the region’s mountains, pumping in the lake’s sediments and layering them to create soils where they could grow different varieties of salt-tolerant plants. These would help revitalize the soils, van der Hoeven said, reducing salt levels and making the land able to support a larger array of plants.

Van der Hoeven’s central idea is that adding vegetation to the landscape will mean more evaporation, more clouds forming and more rain falling. It could even change the winds, as greening the region can bring back moisture-laden flows of air, he said.

“This could completely change the weather patterns.”

None of this will be quick.

Van der Hoeven estimates it will take five to seven years to fully revitalize the lake, then between 20 and 40 for the wider regreening.

“It’s really nature telling us the speed,” he said.

Restoration ‘on a planetary scale’

Van der Hoeven’s idea might sound wildly ambitious, but it’s been done before.

As he was feverishly planning the Sinai project, he came across the film “Green Gold,” made by cameraman-turned-ecologist John Liu, which documents a huge desert regreening project in the Loess Plateau in northern China.

The region, nearly the  size of California , had been heavily degraded by years of overuse and overgrazing. With sparse vegetation and covered in thin, ocher-yellow soil, it was very prone to erosion.

In an attempt to transform the land, China’s government and the World Bank launched a  large-scale regreening program  in the 1990s, planting trees and shrubs and implementing grazing bans.

In the decades since, the Loess Plateau has flourished. Parts of the land are now carpeted in green,  soil erosion has reduced  and less sediment flows into the region’s Yellow River, lowering the flood risks.

For van der Hoeven, it was further proof his plan could work.

He sought out Liu, who was immediately on board. The idea of regreening what was once a “land of milk and honey” was “extremely exciting,” Liu told CNN. “The scale reaches a level that helps prove that restoration can be done on a planetary scale.”

It would add to other huge desert regreening projects also underway.

The  Great Green Wall  in Africa, for example, was launched in 2007 to help combat desertification.

Originally intended to be a  belt of trees  planted for thousands of miles across the continent’s Sahel region, the initiative has morphed into a “a mosaic of green and productive landscapes” over 11 countries, said Susan Gardner, director of the ecosystems division at the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi.

Restoration efforts are essential for tackling the climate crisis, nature loss and pollution, Gardner told CNN. “We don’t have a choice. We have to do this; we have to listen to the science and act now.”

A ‘flashy distraction?’

But ecosystems are incredibly complex and when it comes to huge, transformative projects like regreening a desert, some experts are concerned about unintended consequences.

In a project’s quest for a successful finish line, there is a risk that it will opt for fast-growing, non-native species which either don’t survive or become invasive, overtaking the surrounding native plants and damaging wildlife, said Alice Hughes, an assistant professor at Hong Kong University’s School of Biological Sciences. Others are water-thirsty, which can cause conflict with people’s needs.

During the early stages of Africa’s Great Green Wall project, many of the trees died for lack of water, neglect or because they weren’t suitable for the land.

Even in the Loess Plateau, widely credited as an astonishing success, there is evidence the vegetation may be approaching, or even exceeding, what the local water supply can support.

A 2020  study  of the region found that higher levels of evaporation from trees and plants had little impact in terms of increasing rainfall, and even led to “lower water availability for agriculture or other human demands.”

Changing the ecosystem could also mean “potentially changing climate patterns, which may reduce moisture and drive droughts elsewhere,” Hughes said. Evaporation may cool one place but simply deposit the heat in other places.

Planting vegetation could even end up having a warming effect. Light-colored deserts can reflect more of the sun’s energy back into space than darker vegetation. “Deserts actually cool the planet,” said Raymond Pierrehumbert, a physics professor at the University of Oxford.

While regreening arid places could bring local cooling effects, Pierrehumbert told CNN, they could end up “leaving the rest of the planet worse off.”

“We also need to ask ourselves why we are doing it,” Hughes said. These projects can act as “flashy distractions,” she added. “They sound much more exciting than the basic work of protecting existing intact systems, which are still  vanishing at astonishing rates .”

For Liu, however, there is a big difference between natural deserts and those humans helped create. The argument human-caused deserts should not be touched — even those that have been around for thousands of years — “does not seem logical to me,” he said.

Van der Heoven readily admits the project is complex but believes it’s vital to try. “We should protect nature with all we have, but we should also restore nature with all we have,” he said.

He is studying exactly which plants will be able to attract wildlife and survive future climate change impacts. He also believes changing the climate in the Sinai Peninsula will have a positive ripple effect for the region.

Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles for now is regional instability as the war in Gaza continues.

At the end of 2022, the Egyptian government signed an agreement to start researching and planning the restoration of Lake Bardawil. The project was scheduled to kick off this December, but conflict has slowed everything down, van der Hoeven said.

He’s still confident it will happen and thinks the current situation “creates an even stronger case” for regreening as a way to help bring more opportunity and prosperity.

What is clear is that  climate change  and  biodiversity loss , two interlinked global crises, are getting worse, and in the scramble to solve them, the idea of regreening arid land is gaining currency.

As with many compelling, moonshot ideas to tackle huge, complex problems, there are those who urge caution and warn of the dangerous consequences of rushing in, and there are those who argue the situation is now so urgent, there is no choice but to try them.

Van der Hoeven is firmly in the latter camp.

Regeneration of the natural world “is the only way out of the mess we are currently in,” he said. “There is no time anymore not to act. We should act and accept that we don’t know everything.”

The peak on Mount Lemmon rises 6,000 feet from the base, sitting at 9,171 feet, and is the highest peak in the Catalina Mountain range, according to VisitArizona.com.

You can stop along the way up to catch some breathtaking views, try out the different hiking trails, or stop at one of the picnic areas. One popular tourist spot is the  Windy Point Vista  with a view of the Tucson basin and adjacent mountain ranges.

At the top, visitors can grab a chair lift year-round at Ski Valley and explore Summerhaven, a tiny mountain town with gift shops and cozy restaurants to explore.

By the foot of the mountain, you can find another gem worth exploring: Catalina State Park. While known for its hiking trails, the park has many lesser-known picnic areas tucked away from the main trails. The park offers stunning views of the Santa Catalina Mountains, making it a peaceful and scenic spot for a family gathering.

White Mountains

The high elevation of the White Mountains makes this forested range a popular summer getaway, yet the peaks become even more enticing when fall fireworks are unleashed. The lush greens of woodlands and meadows are streaked with brilliant hues of aspens and oaks.

To catch some stunning fall colors, make the drive east on State Route 260 starting in Pinetop-Lakeside. The winding ribbon of pavement curves through a striking combination of pine forests, golden pastures and sparkling lakes. You’ll begin passing through robust stands of white-barked aspens as you continue to gain elevation.

All these hills are part of the sprawling Springerville Volcanic Field. Forest Road 117 is unpaved, but generally passable by sedans. Drive about 5 miles toward the fire lookout on Greens Peak.

After that little detour, head southeast on State Route 273. You’ll pass Sunrise Park Resort, which is quiet before the onslaught of winter skiers and snowboarders.

The road curves along the flank of Mount Baldy. About 11 miles south of State Route 260 you’ll spot the parking area for the East Baldy Trail. It’s a 7-mile hike that joins West Baldy Trail near the summit, but there's no need to tackle the whole thing. Stretch your legs for a mile or so along the East Baldy Trail where aspens blaze like soft torches lighting the way through long meadows.

State Route 273 ends at the junction of State Route 261, but follow the signs for another 3 miles to Big Lake. The 575-acre body of water is ringed with clusters of aspens, their golden reflection mirrored by the lake’s surface for an autumn scene you won’t soon forget.

The winding drive on State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon between Flagstaff and Sedona is astonishing anytime, but it explodes with color during the cooling fall months. If you’re looking for the closest thing Arizona has to a New England display of fall foliage, make a stop at West Fork Trail.

Starting from the Call of the Canyon Picnic Site, West Fork pulls you into verdant forests tucked beneath high cliffs. Echoes of birdsong and the splashy stream fill the canyon. The main trail parallels the meandering creek the whole way.

The peak season for fall colors usually runs from mid-October and well into November. The path seems to burrow into a kaleidoscope of willows, boxelders, velvet ash and the fiery scarlet of the bigtooth maples. They’re supported by an understory of grapevines, sumac and Virginia creeper in a tangle of varying hues.

Another scenic drive in Sedona is The Red Rock Byway along State Route 179, which was named the nation's most scenic roadway in a study by personal injury law firm  Jason Stone Injury Lawyers from earlier this year.

The iconic red sandstone canyon near Sedona city measures only 7.5 miles. It takes about 20 minutes to finish the drive, but you'll likely want to spend some more time stopping at safe areas to admire the mesmerizing mountainous scenery and grab some photos.

Canyon Lake

Located near Tortilla Flat within Tonto National Forest, Canyon Lake offers a variety of water activities and a stunning scenery of steep canyon walls and a miles-long cactus-dotted shoreline.

If you catch a boat rental or a steamboat cruise, you have a good chance of spotting bighorn sheep, deer and javelina. Other activities include waterskiing, jet skiing and wind sailing.

If you make time for a stop along the way, visit Goldfield Ghost Town east of Mesa. The former mining town includes a museum, LuLu's Bordello, livery stables, photo galleries, a coffee shop, a steak house, a saloon, a reptile exhibit and a mystery shack where objects seem to defy gravity.

Visitors can also keep cool on a 25-minute tour of a mine shaft as a guide talks about the "good ol' days" before the gold played out. There are more weekend activities available, including panning for gold, a shooting gallery, rides on a zip line, train or horseback riding. Gunfight shows are also held from November through April.

The leaf peeping is pretty concentrated in Flagstaff, with nearly all roads and trails revolving around the San Francisco Peaks, the ragged remnants of a hulking stratovolcano. Geologists believe it once reached a height of 16,000 feet but continued to blast itself apart.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the vivid autumn colors in Flagstaff. If you drive the paved Snowbowl Road to the upper reaches of the peaks, you’ll witness wide swaths of aspens around every curve. Take U.S. 180 for 7 miles north of Flagstaff and turn right on Snowbowl Road.

If you’re down to get off the pavement, consider a visit to Hart Prairie, perched on the western flank of the San Francisco Peaks.

Hart Prairie Road (Forest Road 151) winds through high meadows and thick conifer forests interrupted by thick stands of aspens. Go on the right October day and every breeze will trigger a cascade of lemon and gold leaves.

Granite Basin Lake

Located near Prescott, Granite Basin Lake is just a two-hour drive from Phoenix. Surrounded by towering pines and granite boulders, it provides a picturesque setting for a family road trip.

The Granite Basin Recreation Area offers year-round recreation opportunities including hiking, horse riding, non-motorized boating, rock climbing, fishing, camping, and picnicking at the quiet spots by the water. Built out with comforts like restrooms and picnic tables, the lake and its surrounding trail complex is family-friendly and designed for short strolls and day-long treks.

There are more than 33 miles of easy and moderate hikes in the recreation area lodged between a wilderness area and suburbia. If you're down for a more advanced hike, Granite Mountain Trail has a strenuous 1,400-foot ascent on a hulking mound of billion-year-old rock. It's one of Prescott's most hyped hikes, serving up a wilderness summit experience with a substantial side of sweat.

Whichever trail you select, you'll be walking through a bizarre landscape of volcanic rock outcroppings weathered smooth by eons of exposure.

Slide Rock State Park

Put a natural water slide amid stunning scenery and you have a tourist magnet.

Located seven miles north of Sedona, Slide Rock State Park  is well worth the trip . Fodor's Travel named it one of "America's 10 Best State Parks" where you can "slip down the smooth, red-sandstone water slide and be carried over the surface by a cooling creek into the swimming hole below."

If you have some extra time, stroll along the Pendley Homestead Trail to see apple orchards, the original Pendley homestead and barn, and beautiful canyon views.

Kartchner Caverns State Park

Any conversation of the most amazing caves in Arizona begins and ends with  Kartchner Caverns . After all, Kartchner is the only living cave, where formations continue to grow.

Located in Benson, Kartchner is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Phoenix. The park boasts the longest known cave straw in the country, measuring 21 feet, 3 inches, traversing across stalactites, stalagmites, and walls that seem to flow like water. Great care has been taken to preserve the cave in its natural state, even as concrete walkways were installed. For that reason, visitors enter through airlocks that maintain the cave’s humidity.

Two half-mile guided tours are offered. The 90-minute Rotunda Tour examines the role water plays in creating the caverns and features Kubla Khan, a breathtaking, theatrically revealed 58-foot-tall column. Due to the summer bat population, the Big Room Tour will not be open again until October. It focuses on cave fauna, living and long gone.

An interactive museum, hiking trails, campground, picnic ramadas and the Bat Cave Cafe are on site. Advance purchase of timed tickets is recommended.
