Exactly what I wear on Instagram

What To Wear In Travel Photos (My Exact Wardrobe!)

April 12, 2019 //  by  Follow Me Away //   8 Comments

I get so many requests for what I recommend people wear for travel photos on Instagram. I created this post to hopefully answer those questions for exactly what I wear and what I recommend! This article isn’t to tell you what YOU should wear. It is simply to tell you what I wear in all of my travel photos on Instagram.

From dresses, skirts, shoes, jackets, and more, I am breaking down everything I personally own and wear and use on Instagram. Many of these outfits I have in multiple colors and styles too so you will know just how much I LOVE IT! If the exact thing I own isn’t online, I will link to the next closest thing that I would personally use and buy.

For me, looking good on Instagram or in travel photos is NOT about having a zillion million pieces of clothing. I wear the same basic staples and rotate them through many different travel photos you see online. It isn’t just one outfit and then I am done. That is wasteful and harmful to the environment. Buy a few pieces you love and wear the crap out of them. Get your money’s worth!

When I choose clothing for Instagram, I have two things that I keep in mind. Number one, IS IT COMFORTABLE?!!! I am a “comfort over style” type gal and if it isn’t comfortable I don’t want anything to do with it. Secondly, is it colorful and will it stand out in photos. I have worn too many black pant/top/jacket/hat combos in the past and take it from me, that does you NO FAVORS when standing out against a landscape.

Dresses to wear on Instagram

The Exact Outfits I Wear In Travel Photos On Instagram

Best dresses for travel photos.

Milumia Women’s Floral Print Flowy Maxi Dress.   This dress is my ALL TIME FAVORITE dress for photos on Instagram. So many people have bought it based on my suggestions and have loved it. If I could only suggest ONE dress to take your Instagram photos to the next level during your travels, this one would be it! First of all, it is SO COMFORTABLE! Second of all, it is SO AFFORDABLE!

I bought this dress for a trip to India and have since worn it on many trips. I also have it in like 5-6 colors. It is the queen of dresses on Instagram. It is casual but classy so you can wear it at night. It is long and flowy so it makes the perfect swish in your photos. It also comes in a variety of sizes including XS and plus size options so there is something for everyone which I really love. This dress is the beast of Instagram dresses and I also live in these dresses when traveling. It is a win-win!

This dress comes in 36 colors  so there is plenty to choose from. The colors range from sunny and bright to darker patterns. I prefer bright colors as they are perfect standing out in travel photos on Instagram but it is really up to you. I am 120lbs and 5’7 and I wear a size small and it runs a little big on me but I like it that way. I recommend getting something your size for a looser fit or one size smaller than you usually wear for a more fitted feel around the waist! Either way, this is the absolute workhorse of travel dresses that also looks amazing in photos on Instagram and you cannot go wrong with it!

Milumia Women’s Boho Dress.  I already loved my number one pick above, and this is my number two pick! Buy a few of these dresses for travels and Instagram and you will be set to go. They pack super small and are very light and airy. This dress is essentially the short version of my #1 pick from above. I have about four of these dresses and I love wearing them with a hat and sandals. They make for a great option for wearing over a swimsuit or for wearing for a day walking around when you still want to look cute for travel or Instagram photos.

This  affordable travel dress  comes in almost 20 colors and multiple sizes ranging from small to plus size options. It is a great flowy option when choosing your Instagram travel outfits because it hardly takes up any space at all! I wear this one around when I am at home in Florida and also when I am traveling to warmer destinations.

I love the long-sleeve version of this dress is that unlike the other choices, it comes in solid-color options instead of just prints! If you are choosing dresses for Instagram choosing a print may get boring after a while and after you see it in a bunch of photos. A solid can be more versatile which is why I just had to include this option.

I own this dress in every solid color they offer and check monthly to see if there are more options added so I can buy it in that too. I’m really hoping it comes in a white  And the price is so darn affordable too you really can’t go wrong choosing a few of these travel dresses to take with you on your trip! It comes in 36 colors and a wide variety of sizes!

Aria Open Sleeve Dress .  I really love this dress by Westwynd Botique. They are a small boutique dress company and the dresses are actually SUPER affordable for this type of shop. Normally dresses from these types of stores cost $150 but this one rings in at under $50. It is well made and really flowy and magical. I wear it for travel photos and during my travels on @followmeawaytravel but we also shoot with it in our more magical style photoshoots on @followmeaway.

It is super comfortable for traveling and the solid color looks really pretty in photos during your travels. It has come everywhere from California to Ireland with us and will continue to be one of my top picks for travel outfits for Instagram! If you are looking to support a small business during your travels, this is the one to go to.

Best Skirts For Travel Photos

Amelia Full-Length Maxi Skirt .  This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE skirt to wear on travel photos and on Instagram. I also regularly wear it during my travels as well and even spoke in one during the New York Times Travel Show. I have this skirt in both yellow and rose. It also comes in light pink and I am DYING to see more colors be made. It is a bit pricey but it is very good quality chiffon and fully lined. I actually had a blue maxi skirt custom made because I couldn’t find what I wanted and the price of the fabric alone was almost $70. I am not one to spend $90 on a skirt let alone two, but this was some of the best money I have ever spent.

This skirt is a great asset for taking Instagram photos in cold locations. You can simply wear a base top like a white thermal and then throw the skirt on over it for photos and then take the skirt back off. This is what I did in Iceland and in some of Paris. Alternatively, it also makes a great travel piece for the winter time as you can dress it up really cute and it keeps you warm. In the winter, I wear brown boots, multiple pairs of leggings, long sleeve top and scarf, and a jacket that I take off for photos. It is a truly stunning skirt and worth every penny. I have a size small.

Women’s High Waist Maxi Skirt. Now, I do not own this skirt, but I have purchased it and returned it. I bought the Morning Lavender one above and this one at the same time and then returned this one. The reason I include it here is that it is much cheaper than the $90 Morning Lavender one and can acheive some of the same look for your Instagram photos during your travels.

I do NOT like a stretch waistband which is why I returned this skirt. It was still a great skirt and very flowy and I know SO MANY photographers who use this skirt for their clients. If you are looking to try something a little cheaper, this is a great option. The tie can be used to hide the elastic waistband. I hate elastic waistbands which is why I went with the more expensive option.

Women’s A-Line Short Knee Length Tutu . Now this one is certainly NOT for wearing around cities during your travels but does wonders for Instagram! I mean, who doesn’t like a good tutu skirt? I bought this skirt in three colors, red, light pink, and light purple. The light purple ended up being my all time favorite and yes, I brought all three on one trip! I have even worn them to Disney World with black leggings and brown shoes. If you are looking for a magical look on Instagram, this is the tutu skirt for you!

Best Jackets For Travel Photos

Outdoor Hooded Women’s Trench Coat . Every Instagrammer needs a yellow coat, right? I have to be honest, the jackets are cheap but they look GREAT in travel photos on Instagram. This jacket comes in a bunch of colors but I LOVE yellow or orange [I own yellow] and there is a reason why so many people wear a yellow jacket in Instagram photos. It just looks so great and really stands out in the photos! This is more of the type of jacket that you wear when it isn’t completely freezing out and is more for looks but if you wear a base layer under it you are good to go. I wore it in Iceland with no issues of cold in September with a base thermal layer.

Women Swing Double Breasted Wool Pea Coat. This coat is a total favorite for my travels and for photos. I was a little scared to own a white pea coat but so far it has been wonderful. It looks so classy over skirts or dresses in the winter and the wool keeps you VERY warm! I wore it over the Morning Lavender skirts all of Paris and NYC in the dead of winter and it was fantastic! It comes in multiple colors but I am so incredibly glad that I chose the white option. It is just beautiful. When it comes time to take your Instagram photos and if you don’t want to wear the coat, just set it gently on top of your bag for the photo.

Anne Klein Women’s Classic Double-Breasted Coat. I have to be honest, this isn’t the exact red pea coat I own but it is very close. My Grandma bought me my coat from the mall when I was like 15 years old and it has lasted over 10 years. It makes a GREAT centerpiece for Instagram photos and looks really nice in city backgrounds. The red really pops and it is comfortable enough to wear during your every day travels too even when you are not taking photos for Instagram.

Best Tops For Travel Photos

Sivvan Women’s Comfort Long Sleeve T-Shirt. I LOVE this top! It is what I wear with all of my skirts and also on the plane. You can get it in pretty much any color or size. I have it in black, grey, and white. I wear white and grey the most and it looks great with the skirts. Terrence originally thought that it would look bad because it is so casual and the skirts are so fancy, but not a single person has said anything either online or in person! I would say go for it! It is a great base for travels and to wear in your photos.

Best Leggings For Travel Photos

Premium Women’s Fleece Lined Leggings . Don’t believe the hype! You do NOT need to pay $100+ for fancy fleece leggings. I get mine from Amazon and these are what I LIVE IN! I have them in black and have multiple pairs in the event one rips during my travels. They are very comfortable and I wear a size medium because I like them bigger. If you throw on the yellow raincoat suggested above with the hunter rain boots it becomes a super cute Instagram outfit and is comfy to wear during your travels. These are also what I wear under the skirts mentioned above during the winter time and sometimes I wear two pairs if it is very cold.

High Waisted Capri Leggings. I own these leggings in white. I don’t generally like Capri leggings but I wear a white pair under my favorite dresses listed above. It is great for when it isn’t hot out but it isn’t cold out and there is a slight chill in the air. The Capri leggings allow them to hide underneath your outfit and the white color goes with the floral dresses. They have yet to get dirty on me so that is a good sign!

Best Swimsuit For Travel Photos

CUPSHE Women’s Ladies Vintage Lace Swimsuit. I own this swimsuit in three colors, black, yellow, and dark pink. Now I see they have a royal blue which I love and will be looking into right after I write this post! I like a swimsuit that has full coverage on the butt [like I said, I am comfort over style and I don’t like a thong or cheeky styles as it isn’t comfortable to me]. I also like the plunging neckline as I think it is flattering in photos. This swimsuit also fits tight around the stomach which allows for added tummy control. I have worn this swimsuit everywhere from Oman and Iceland to Jamaica and Austria. Comes in size small-XXlarge. I wear a size small.

 Best Hats For Travel Photos

C.C Thick Cable Knit Beanie Hat. This is my GO TO winter hat for travel and photos. Trust me, my sister steals it on the regular for her trips. It is less than $20 so she should really just buy her own as you should too! It is a fantastic and substantial beanie hat and super cute in photos. I have worn it everywhere from Paris and Iceland to NYC in winter. It works like a charm and looks great in photos! I have it in white, red, and mustard. It is lined with a nice fuzzy material too which keeps you warm and breaks the wind against your ears!

Wool Blend Plain French Beret . A beret is a super cute addition to any travel photos on Instagram. I bought mine online before a trip to Paris and wore them in every photo. I know loads of women who also wear berets for other countries and cities too so you don’t have to be limited just to Paris. I have this exact beret in bright red, maroon, and light pink so that it goes with all of my skirts and outfits. I love the fact that it is wool because it keeps your head and ears warm during the colder times of the year. It goes great for a winter Instagram outfit with a skirt with a thermal top and scarf.

Women’s Wide Brim Braided Sun Hat. Yes, this may seem like a quintessential “Instagram” thing to do, but I LIVE in my sunhat during my travels to warm places, even when I am not in photos [especially then!] Wide brim and SPF 50 make this a great choice for your photos. If you are traveling to warm places and are looking for something to take your outfits to the next level in travel photos, this is for you!

Best Shoes For Travel Photos

Women’s Leather Ankle Army Boots.  Brown ankle boots are my go-to under skirts and dresses for Instagram photos during the colder months. These are not the exact shoes I own, I got mine from Payless a few years ago, but these are close. I like to tuck my leggings into the boot so they don’t fall out so I prefer a true anke boot, not these “bootie” style that go under the ankle that is so popular now. I wear my brown ankle boots everywhere and they go really well and are understated and don’t draw the eye on Instagram.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Victoria Yore + TJ Drysdale (@followmeawaytravel) on Jan 16, 2019 at 8:58am PST

Vionic Women’s Rest Farra Backstrap Sandal. These are the STAR of travel shoes. I own three pairs of the exact same shoe. I wear one and have two in stock in case they ever stop making them! I will wear these shoes until the last possible moment before it gets cold. They are actually orthopedic sandals which make for great comfort during your travels but they look great in Instagram photos as well. I own them in tan so they don’t draw the eye away from the dresses and outfits I wear. My mom also owns them in black and they look really nice. I love that you can dress them down or up and they are easy to clean. A true favorite for travel photos on Instagram and something I totally live in 24/7 at home and during travels!

Hunter Women’s Original Tall Rain Boots . Like my $90 skirt above, I am NOT one to spend a whopping $110 on rain boots, but it was the best damn money I have ever spent! I bought these shoes for Ireland and have since worn them on so many trips and have never had to replace them. My sister bought a cheap pair of rain boots for our trip to Iceland from Amazon and they “died” her next trip in Greece so going cheap isn’t always best when it comes to shoes! To name a few places, I have worn these boots in Iceland for two weeks, Ireland for two weeks [on two diff trips!] Oregon, California, Paris [two trips!] Austria, London, NYC and much more! I have yet to find a regular pair of boots I like enough for Instagram and travels to ditch these. So YES I wear rain boots with outfits and dresses. AND I LOVE IT!

I will continually update this post as I add new pieces, but for now this is pretty much everything I wear and bring on every trip whether it is cold or warm and that you see in all the photos on Instagram. I hope you found this helpful and I am happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments!

For me, it’s always been a challenge to pack a bag and choose just one or two dresses that will be versatile enough to wear in different types of weather and various occasions for a single trip.

In fact, one thing I never let myself do was explore the different types of cool travel dresses out there, for women on the go. I’ve always packed a patterned maxi dress, layered it with a jean jacket, and called it a day. But I could be doing better!

I’ve learned that there are travel dresses out there made by great brands that have invented fabrics that zap moisture and sweat, minimize odors (who doesn’t get stinky on a plane?) and come with pockets .

In the list that follows, I’ve picked a few of the best dresses on the market for women travelers, so that you don’t have to do the work! Let’s dig in.

Bluffworks Threshold T-Shirt Dress

If there was ever a T-shirt dress that really rocked my world, it’s this new one from Bluffworks , the brand that builds great travel clothes for women. In the past, I’ve found T-shirt dresses to hit the wrong places on my body, but this one is both flattering and comfy. Plus, it has hidden POCKETS!

travel photo dress

The Threshold T-shirt Dress is made from the Bluffworks proprietary Threshold fabric (I also have the Threshold tee). It works well on travel days.

My favorite part of the T-shirt dress is that it comes in petite sizing and I actually feel great in it. Regular dresses often hit my legs too far down and look like I am drowning. This dress comes in regular sizes by default, and if you’re short like I am, opt for petite sizes!

travel photo dress

I think this T-shirt travel dress is priced pretty affordably for all the versatility it provides. I could wear it from spring to fall, layered with scarves, cardigans or tights and boots for cool nights on a trip. In these photos, I’m wearing it with my Troubadour Momentum backpack .

Check out this stylish dress to wear on an upcoming trip!

Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress

If you’re taking a warm-weather trip that’s bound to get you into humidity, try out the Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress . I own it in Baltic Amber and in size XS, and the feel of it is like nothing I’ve ever had in my closet before. It’s bouncy and soft on my torso and legs. Note: while the Heritage Midi Dress from Free Fly fits me great in the torso, this one is a bit big and looser.

This dress folds up small in a packing cube, and is made of a special material blend that’s meant to handle heat and humidity like a breeze . The best feature I found is the hidden zipper pocket in the right-side slash pocket. I use this for tiny things like coins or a key.

Is Free Fly worth it? See my Free Fly product experience review .

Free Fly Women's Breeze Dress

Embrace the breeze in this lightweight dress that handles heat and humidity.

Quince 100% European Linen Sleeveless Swing Dress

Everything from Quince has been so affordable, in my experience. I tried the Quince 100% European Linen Sleeveless Swing Dress and absolutely loved the classic summer style.

travel photo dress

The only thing about it to gripe about is that the buttons are a little hard to open, when you first get it. I opened one, and got it over my head, and then I kept that button open. I really like the colors that this dress comes in, and I chose Olive. The two pockets on the sides are perfect for sliding my hands into, and they are functional during travel.

I like the timeless chic style of this travel dress, and the side pockets.

Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress

I’m so glad that Public Rec has come out with some dresses! The cousin of the Public Rec Go-To Dress , the Go-To Tank Dress is a nice travel staple with a funky open back for style. It has a flirty fit and a top half that reminds me of the Public Rec muscle tank that I enjoy wearing as a travel shirt.

With a blend of Pima cotton (which I first discovered in the Public Rec Essential Tee ) and spandex, it’s an athletic fit and the material is durable. This one is great for travel in pretty hot temperatures and could be paired with my Public Rec Adapt Belt Bag .

travel photo dress

My tip about sizing: Public Rec typically runs “true to size,” in my experience, with their products like the Essential Tee, Luxe Fleece collection and joggers. The Go-To Tank Dress runs a bit wider than I’d like, so I have some fabric gaps at the side that will probably make this dress less of a “go” for me. Keep this in mind about your build if you like this dress, because it’s good for larger-chested women (proportionally) as well as women who might feel like they have more of a standard (non-petite) body type.

Keep it simple with the Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress, a chic travel dress.

Bluffworks Threshold Tie Waist T-Shirt Dress

The Threshold Tie-Waist T-Shirt Dress is the second travel dress from Bluffworks. It has a flattering look that is not too tight, and originally the tie-waist scared me off, but it works out really well. It can be worn in the front (my preference), or even the back. Check out the photos here of me modeling the six usable pockets.

travel photo dress

At an affordable price point for the quality you get with Bluffworks, I think this one’s an easy decision. This type of dress can be totally casual for a day to day while traveling, and would look nice as a base layer for more business casual outfits if you have that use during your trip.

This one differs from the Bluffworks original T-shirt dress because it has the nice touch of cuffed sleeves, and I like this a lot. One of the biggest benefits is that this tie-waist style is a classic, so if you put your budget toward a dress like this, it’ll last for years.

See why this travel dress makes a great wardrobe staple.

Free Fly Bamboo Heritage Midi Dress

I slid this Free Fly dress on when I got it. It’s called a “midi” dress because it is supposed to fall at the mid-calf, but for me, at 5’2,” the hemline falls at my ankles in size XS. Keep this in mind! I actually really like that the bamboo viscose fabric feels a little heavier than other dresses I’ve worn, becuase it doesn’t show underwear lines and I appreciate this.

The Heritage Midi Dress has UPF 50+ sun protection, and it is fitted at the top with a natural flow throughout the rest of the body. I like the flattering scoop neck and the hand pockets at the waist! It looks good with a jean jacket when I put on a layer for cooler evenings on a vacation.

To see more products from Free Fly, check out my list of the best women’s travel shorts and you’ll find some recommendations there.

Free Fly Women's Bamboo Heritage Midi Dress

A breezy and comfortable cotton-bamboo viscose dress with a scoop neck.

Aviator Chambray Travel Dress

This long-sleeve denim-look travel dress from Aviator is a new one of my travel finds. It’s a sturdy chambray and I can dress it up with sandals in spring or boots in the fall. What stands out to me about this dress is of course, the pockets, which even have Aviator’s signature YKK zippers.

travel photo dress

This chambray dress has a waist tie for closure and flattery. For my Aviator dress, I took Aviator up on their FREE tailoring, and had it taken in at the shoulders and at the length because I’m petite. Now it fits great! Most women say it fits between “to size” and “on the big side.” So, you might want to size down.

I prefer to wear it with the sleeves folded up, as I’m not one for the long-sleeve look. For more photos, see my detailed Aviator Chambray Travel Dress review . My tip : This dress is currently being discontinued and is on “dead stock” only, so it’s discounted on Aviator’s website ! Most sizes are available, but note that it is Final Sale .

I learned about the Icebreaker brand because Dan really likes his Icebreaker merino wool crew sweatshirt . I was glad to find out that Icebreaker makes great women’s apparel in their signature merino wool blend.

Merino wool is one of the best materials for travel, because it’s soft and strong, as well as lightweight and fine. The Granary Sleeveless Dress is 100% merino wool and is a minimalist travel dress with a subtle cap sleeve and a modest knee length.

A dress like this would be good if you plan to take a trip that involves some sightseeing that requires modest dress, like religious temples or sacred places — think Israel or Sri Lanka .

travel photo dress

As for fit, it runs pretty long and overall, I think Icebreaker runs big in women’s sizes. If you are a pretty standard build and average height, you still might want to size down . I have Icebreaker’s merino tee for women, and that runs big, too. Check out my photos for a close-up on the fabric and for how small it folds up in your luggage!

Quince Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Mini Dress

I tested out Quince’s Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Mini Dress and was very happy with out comfortable it was. The tencel has a certain weight to it, which makes the dress hang off my body and not stick to my legs. That’s a plus.

travel photo dress

My favorite aspect of it is the flattering neckline. I find I have trouble finding necklines that make me feel confident, and this one has a great shape, with the scoop and straps. Being as short as I am, it ran longer on me than it looks on the models on the product pages. Another highlight: handy and functional slit pockets at the sides.

Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress

I became familiar with Athleta via my Athleta leggings with pockets that I mention in my list of the best travel pants for women . They make dresses, too! The Elation V-Neck Hybrid Dress is a pretty and flattering summery dress that I can’t stop looking at because it’s so breezy and easy.

It’s an ultralightweight dress made of polyester and spandex that comes in inclusive sizes of XS to 3XL! It’s fitted at the torso and then flares out for keeping you cool.

Embrace comfort and elegance with the Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress, perfect for casual outings or dressier occasions.

Toad & Co. Grom Tank Dress

This super casual v-neck dress from the brand Toad & Co. comes in both solids and stripes, and has hand pockets to boot! I’ll pair this one with sneakers or sandals for sure because it has a cool T-shirt vibe to it.

It’s made of hemp and organic cotton, so it dries fast, controls odors and is lightweight, making it a simple option to roll up into a packing cube for a tropical trip.

As a bonus, like with other products from Toad & Co., you can often find a few of the colors on sale at any given time.

Bask in the summer sun with the Toad & Co. Grom Tank Dress, your ultimate casual style statement.

Patagonia Regenerative Organic Certified™ Cotton Essential Dress

This long-sleeve casual dress from Patagonia caught my eye because it is super chill. And of course, I had to search for if it has pockets: it does! It has a totally relaxed fit, so think of pairing it with walking sneakers and a baseball cap. You could also wear it with leggings and boots in winter or fall.

As for specifics, this Patagonia travel dress is Fair Trade Certified™, and made from 100% Regenerative Organic Certified™ cotton. It has raglan-style sleeves, two slit pockets and that “Retro Fitz Roy Patagonia logo” that every traveler wants on their chest. What’s not to love?

Patagonia Cotton Essential Dress

This laid-back long-sleeve dress for chilled-out travelers has pockets and a cozy vibe.

tentree Arden Dress

The Arden Dress from tentree has pockets — can you believe it? This travel dress is a blend of Lyocell, recycled polyester and organic cotton that has a two-way stretch knit. For now, it comes in the “core color” of Meteorite Black.

I like the gathered neck, hand pockets, elastic gathered waist and sleeveless look. I’d wear this one in Central America or Southeast Asia, or a summer in Europe. This dress is specifically meant for summer, and for keeping you cool with the gentle fabric. Lastly, it’s easily machine washable.

Embrace comfort and sustainability with the tentree Arden Dress, crafted from recycled fabrics.

prAna Jewel Lake Summer Dress

prAna’s cool high-neck flare dress is stretchy with a detailed back. It’s the only one of its kind, in this entire list of travel dresses!

There are pockets in this travel dress, too (two hand slit pockets at the hips). It has a built-in shelf bra (with removable pads), so that you don’t need to wear one if you don’t need to! I also think it’s an ideal day-to-night dress to bring on a warm and tropical trip. In the black color, you could even dress it up a whole bit more.

This high-neck relaxed dress is made for warm-weather holiday breaks.

KUHL Vantage Dress

KUHL is an adventure and outdoors brand, so I was glad to see they have a dress available for women travelers. The Vantage dress comes in four bold colors, and is sized XS-XL.

As all KUHL products are created for being on the go and being active, the dress has moisture management, odor resistance, sun protection at UPF 50+ and a four-way fabric stretch. There are pockets right below the elastic waist!

This travel dress is fairly casual, so if your trip is active (I probably wouldn’t wear this dress for biking or climbing) like if you’re camping, doing a lot of walking or going on an easy hike, pack this dress in your bag.

Dress to impress with the KUHL Vantage Dress, a versatile piece that combines comfort with contemporary fashion.

REI Co-op Trailmade Dress

Zipper pocket alert: the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress has one, for three pockets in total. It’s a dress that was actually designed for women who love to hike and be outdoors, with UPF 50+ sun protection.

As for the fabric, the REI Trailmade Dress is made of a lightweight nylon/spandex blend with 2-way stretch. It’s quick-drying and moisture-wicking, making it the ultimate dress for “roughing it.”

REI makes a point that this dress is geared toward women of all sizes, as it comes in sizes XS to 3XL.

Travel in style and comfort with the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress, perfect for all types of trips.

Peruvian Connection Le Marais Dress

Probably the most elegant dress in the list, this summery travel dress has a beautifully flattering neckline and a flare hem that will look pretty in photos. It’s a blend of pima cotton and spandex, so it has a slight stretch in its softness. It’s perfect as a go-anywhere dress that’ll pack up into a compression cube and be ready to go.

Peruvian Connection is a company founded from the love of Peruvian textiles, evolving into a global company. The brand’s mission is to support Andean artisans with luxurious fibers and to provide well-paying job opportunities locally.

Travel elegantly in this timeless dress with pockets

Why should you trust me?

I’ve been traveling on my own since 2009, and I know what makes a good piece of clothing to have in my suitcase!

I’ve been through items that have broken or ripped during trips, as well as clothes that have shown sweat, haven’t washed easily and haven’t stood the test of time.

The garments I recommend in this list are clothes I have personally tested already, or ones I plan to wear, and I’m happy with how they look and how they feel.

Also, the brands listed are ones from which I already own other travel clothes (check out my list of the best women’s pants for travel , as well as the best women’s shirts for travel ).

The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses

travel photo dress

As an over 60 woman, I plan my travel wardrobe around classic, easy-care items. I take inspiration from the French style of dressing, focusing on solid colors and a classic look in high quality pieces. I accent these with colorful scarves, jackets, and jewelry. A dress fits perfectly into this capsule. Designing your travel style around a simple dress is a great way to pack light and look great! I’ve tested some of the best women’s travel dresses and present my favorites here.

Why pack a dress for travel?

I’m not your typical dress person. At home you’re more likely to find me in a great pair of jeans or workout wear. But when I’m planning a trip, I want to be ready for anything – museum visits, evenings out, and lots of walking. For me, one of the best options is a travel dress! On cruises, a dress is always on the list. (We don’t book anything that requires formal wear. It’s just not our thing.) On an active adventure where you’re in hiking or cycling clothes by day, it’s nice to have an option for something soft and pretty at night. And in a stretch, a dress can be worn as nightwear! That’s where dresses for travel come in!

Unless noted, we were not supplied with the dresses we reviewed here, but were so impressed with the Wool& dress and bike shorts, that we have chosen to partner with Wool& going forward. DISCLOSURE

As a woman over 60, I began traveling IN the sixties. My Dad wore three piece suits, and my mom and I wore dresses. Does that make me a travel dress expert?? No, but it does give me an appreciation for the functionality of dresses.

What makes a great travel dress?

Any piece that makes its way into our bag has to earn its place. Dresses are no exception. Here are our criteria for the perfect travel dress:

1. Packability – lightweight, wrinkle resistant

2. Versatility – I don’t pack anything that I can’t wear more than once. Clothing that has more than one good option is the best way to pack light. Choose a casual dress that can go from daytime touring to evenings out with an accessory or two. A dress that’s convertible gets extra points!

3. Low Maintenance/Ease of Care – who has time for doing laundry on vacation? A sink wash and air dry are usually the most we do on vacation.

4. Sustainable Quality – don’t be fooled by fast fashion. Invest in well made, classic items from ethical companies. Not only is this best for the planet, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

5. Comfort and Pleasure – (Probably the most important yet often forgotten criteria) Do I like how I feel in this dress? Does it work for my body type? Does it fit my personal style? Do I enjoy wearing it?

Save space by packing natural fiber clothing that can be worn multiple ways. Willow merino dress by wool&. #merinowool #travelclothing

Choose your color, a dress style you like, and fabric that travels well

Color . The foundation of the French woman’s style is the little black dress. This staple piece is simple yet classy and never goes out of fashion. When creating a French-inspired travel wardrobe , I start with a solid color dress – the base palette – and add color and patterns with other pieces and accessories. Parisian women may favor black as their base, but you should choose what’s best for you, and your skin tone. Navy blue, wine, or dark gray can be more flattering to women over 60. They certainly are for me.

Style . Your choice will depend on your signature style and your destination. Sleeveless styles are great for hot climates, and will work just as well in cold weather when you add layers! But some ladies prefer long sleeves. And some love maxi dresses! (though maxis will take up more luggage space!) Go with what makes you comfortable and what flatters your best features.

Travel dress - woman over 60 wearing a merino wool dress.

Fabric . To earn its place in your bag the dress (and every item really!) has to be lightweight and easy to care for. This is where the fabric choice comes in. For example:

  • Cotton is heavy, retains odors, and takes forever to dry.
  • Linen is wonderful, but wrinkles can be frustrating.
  • Synthetics are very lightweight, but can retain odors.

For ease of care and sustainability we recommend choosing natural fibers such as bamboo, Tencel, and wool for your travel clothing.

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular material for travel clothing. It’s sustainable and odor resistant.

Merino wool has a natural warmth and resiliency not found in other textiles. Merino sheep, bred originally in Spain, have ultrafine wool which doesn’t provoke the itchy reaction some people experience with wool. AND it’s naturally odor resistant. That means you can wear a merino wool item over and over again, with only an overnight airing out!

Our Top Pick for General Travel & Versatility:

Best dresses for travel offer versatility and easy care.

Wool& Merino Wool Dresses

Rowena swing dress, price: $138 USD

  • Packability: 11 oz., wrinkle resistant.
  • Versatility: simple swing dress, but can be styled as a top or tunic
  • Ease of Care: fabric is 78% ultrasoft merino wool and 22% nylon
  • Quality: very well made
  • Comfort and Pleasure: temperature regulating, very comfortable, and has pockets!

I discovered Wool&, a small Oregon company producing merino wool clothing, through a Facebook ad. To prove the durability and natural odor resistance of merino wool, the company challenged people to wear their dress for 100 days straight. (I can’t imagine they expected this challenge to be so popular or to inspire an online community of women sharing the ups and downs of daily life over 100 days! No doubt the kindest group on social media!) Needless to say, given my interest in merino wool clothing, I was intrigued.

I base my capsule wardrobe on my favorite color, navy blue, so I opted for the Wool& signature item, the Rowena swing dress in marine blue. It’s a wonderful rich blue and I’m thrilled with the color. The dress has a boat neckline which is very flattering (and protective in the sunshine). As this is a swing dress, the body of the dress is loose, flowy, and flattering to my body shape. The material is light and lends itself to dozens of styling tricks and outfit ideas shared by the Facebook community. (There are many different colors available for this and other Wool& dresses)

My Wool& Review: Is this the best dress for traveling?

Styling a multiway travel dress as a tunic. Older woman in NYC

For the first month of the challenge, I played with the dress. I shopped my closet, pulling out long neglected items to pair with the dress. It was fun being creative with a simple piece of clothing, and truly surprising to pull out the dress each morning to find it as fresh as the day it arrived !

Then I got serious and began testing the dress for travel. I limited myself to a small capsule and worked on different outfits for different travel scenarios. First I wore the dress to my grandchild’s christening, and then another granddaughter’s lacrosse game. I wore it during zoom meetings, neighborhood clean-ups, and even for bike rides. The Wool& Rowena came through every time.

I had two opportunities to travel during this time – once to NYC for a fun weekend, and once to Texas for a sad event. The dress became my nightgown in Texas and gave me comfort.

Ease of Care: I aired out the dress every night – flipped it inside out and hung it over a bar. I sink-washed the dress six times and washed it in the washer once just to test durability. (I did use a lingerie bag) Day 100 the dress looked as fresh as on day 1.

Wool& offers several other travel dresses with pockets, including french terry dresses like the Sierra, a sleeveless option that’s very popular with travelers, the Everett, a tunic length sweater dress, and the Willow, a 3/4 sleeve swing dress with a V-neck.

Merino wool dresses are also offered by Icebreaker and Smartwool. Both brands produce quality goods so I’d feel confident ordering one of these if you find a style that suits you!

Amazon carries merino wool clothing at a more affordable price. I haven’t tried any of these so can’t speak to the quality. Let me know if you recommend them!

Best for a Special Event While Traveling

Chico's travelers collection includes many stylish dresses for travel all packable travel dresses.

Chico’s Travelers Collection – dresses

  • Price: ~$100-109 USD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant
  • Versatility: n/a
  • Ease of Care: machine or sink wash
  • Fabric: 96% acetate, 4% elastane. From website: Our Travelers Classic collection contains Eastman Naia™, a sustainable cellulose fiber derived from wood pulp.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish, and flattering. Fabric has a bit of stretch for extra comfort

These packable travel dresses would be perfect for date nights, a destination wedding or afternoon tea party . Chico’s designs these dresses for all but I think the dresses, with their simple lines and great style, appeal especially to mature women. I like the mid-length pencil skirt look, but Chico’s also has cocktail dresses.

I don’t own any of these gorgeous dresses above because I have another Chico’s dress, bought 10 years ago, that still looks great! It’s a floral print and always in my luggage if I want to add a beautiful dress to my bag!

Our Favorite Convertible Travel Dresses

Origami by Diane Kroe

Diane Kroe Origami travel dress. Best convertible dress for travel, truly a multiway travel dress

  • Price: $150 CAD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant, but at 14.3 oz, not particularly lightweight
  • Versatility: converts to multiple new looks – dress, halter top, batwing top, skirt
  • Ease of Care: Dress is made from 92% poly and 8% spandex, so not a natural fabric, but it dries quickly and resists wrinkles.
  • Quality: well made in Canada
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish and extremely comfortable!

I’ve been a customer of Diane Kroe Designs for many years. I love the versatility of the collection. The Origami is one of my favorites. Usually I wear it as a top with skinny jeans or white pants, but I love having the option to wear it as a dress when traveling. This piece is great for older women travelers. The shape and drape are stylish and forgiving.

The main thing about convertible clothing is the style options while traveling. I’ve packed this dress specifically for special events but reached for it later in the trip as a light layer.

Best Dress for Sun Protection

Coolibar (Malta) Travel Shirt Dress –

Note: After first posting about this travel dress, the company kindly sent me one for review.

Price: $115 USD

Coolibar striped shirt dress for travel

  • Versatility: wear it as a shirt dress, an opened jacket, or tie the ends to make a cute button-down shirt.
  • Ease of Care: fabric is quick dry. Machine or hand wash in cold water,
  • Fabric: from the website: Antimicrobial fabric that is lightweight, breathable and soft to the touch. With 4-way stretch it is naturally wrinkle resistant and moisture wicking.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: a travel (and home!) classic style

What makes this a great choice? The Coolibar brand produces stylish clothing with sun protection – great for us older women! This shirt is rated UPF 50 and is breathable making it a great option for days of intense sun. The collar and cuffs can be adjusted to give maximum sun coverage.

Another great feature of the Malta is the hidden, zipped side pockets!

I was gifted the black version of the this dress. It is remarkably lightweight and cool. I wore it to a recent event – belted over leggings – and received lots of compliments!

Visit the Coolibar website for other dress styles for travel and sun protection .

Best of the rest: more suggestions for travel dresses

Athleta is one of my favorite brands for comfortable travel-friendly pants. I haven’t had the chance to try any of their dresses, but they offer several cute – short and sporty – dresses. You’ll find similar dresses at TitleNine.

For hard-working dresses suitable to many overseas trips check out Travelsmith, Magellan Travel Catalog, Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. These classic travel clothing companies will often have something that fits our easy-care, lightweight, wrinkle-free standards.

An option often offered in travel dresses is a reversible dress – pattern on one side and solid on the other. This might work for you, but I donated mine as it was too heavy. Some reversible dresses, like mine, are actually a two layer dress (a black sheath inside a patterned sheath). Thus the dress is heavier than a single layer dress.

A variant of the reversible dress that I do like is a dress with two necklines. Basically you can wear the dress back or front depending on the neckline you want. I love my Wool& Summer midi dress which has a high neckline and a v-neck neckline. This actually does give versatility to my travel wardrobe!

Have I convinced you to pack a dress for your travel?

Some last thoughts. The right dress can be endlessly useful during your travels. Wear it to a nice dinner? of course! But you can also wear it when you’re on a bus tour, for a hike in the mountains, and even sometimes as a workout tunic over exercise tights. (believe me. I’ve done it several times!)

Look in your closet first to see if there’s a dress that’ll be versatile, stylish, and easy care for your trip. If you need to buy a new dress find one that you can see wearing several times on your travels. Take some time before you leave to try the dress on, and play with accessories. That’s the best time to see if the dress deserves a place in your travel capsule wardrobe .

What do you think? Will a dress fit into your travel wardrobe?

Tip: for maximum comfort (and modesty) consider wearing leggings or bike shorts under your dress. I love my merino wool shorts by Wool& , Frankie Bike Shorts and Summit Shorts- both keep me fresh and comfortable and have pockets!

The best dresses for travel are lightweight, easy-care, and versatile. Choose merino wool for the ultimate travel dress. #travelstyle #traveldresses #merinowool ##womenoversixty

I’m about to embark on the Wool& 100 day challenge, and this post has me excited about all the possibilities! I’ve been interested in capsule wardrobes for a while. This might be my moment!

Oh my goodness! All the yesses!!!! I’ve done the challenge (in a Ro!) as well and am a full on convert to not only a merino wool fan but it has affirmed my love, desire, and need for a capsule wardrobe for every day and more.

I am finally getting to travel again soon and my Wool& dresses are all I’m planning on taking for core outfit pieces!

So, I have to ask, is the merino wool cool to wear? I am at the age where I am wearing t-shirts when everyone else is bundled up!

Yes! At least that’s my experience. The dress I purchased was long sleeved, and would not be ideal for a woman who’s usually hot. I have since purchased a sleeveless and short sleeved dress. Both wonderful on hot days.

Well I’ll definitely be reconsidering packing dresses in the future. Thanks!

🙂 Looking forward to seeing pictures of you in those dresses!

I’ve just purchased a SmartWool sleeveless dress for a trip to Italy, but don’t know about shoes. Was planning to take only athletic shoes for comfort but they don’t look good with the dress. Suggestions?

Loved your article and Wool&. What tool did you use to gather up the Rowena (one had the Rowena as a top, it looks as if it is plastic and round). Thanks for this article. I was looking for ways to elevate the styling of the dress.

Hi Joy, I use a scarf ring/loop I purchased from Amazon. I’m sure you can find one at a fabric store too!

Another trick you can use with either the scarf loop, or a smaller circular thing like a coin, is to place the loop either under or over the dress and gather the fabric around it with an elastic. It makes either a cute pucker or a button.

Colorfulkoala Women's Cloud Tennis Dress

Women's Cloud Tennis Dress

A well-known workout brand on Amazon, Colorfulkoala makes some of our experts' favorite budget-friendly athletic wear. Many GH testers even favor Colorfulkoala over pricier options . The exercise dress adopts a thick fabric seen in the brand's other offerings as well as a padded shelf bra and built-in romper liner. One caveat is that the straps aren't adjustable.

Halara Everyday 2-in-1 Activity Euphoria Dress

Everyday 2-in-1 Activity Euphoria Dress

Wildly popular for its flattering yet comfy fit, this Halara travel dress is made from a nylon and elastane blend. Translation: It is moisture-wicking while retaining its shape and stretch. One GH textiles pro especially loves wearing this pick on vacation because of its built-in interior shelf bra and adjustable straps . Plus, the shorts liner has got you covered. Choose from an array of light pinks and yellows for summertime.

Outdoor Voices The Exercise Dress

The Exercise Dress

The Outdoor Voices Exercise Dress has a cult-like following for being a summer necessity. Complete with lightweight, moisture-wicking nylon , plus built-in shorts, pockets and a shelf bra , the workout dress is a go-to for biking, golfing, hiking or just running errands. Our pros love its versatility but note that its spandex shorts aren't as compressive as traditional bike shorts .

15 Best Travel Dresses in 2024 – Cute, Comfortable, and Wrinkle Free

  • Travel Gear

Looking for the best travel dresses? Here are the ones I’ve tried and love.

When I travel, I prefer wearing dresses. It simplifies your packing process and makes coordinating outfits on trips a breeze. The maximizer in me will be stressing about it all day, even with a packing list in hand, so it helps!

For this post, I tested many highly rated travel dresses mentioned on travel sites and got recommendations from our globetrotting friends on the road. Plus, I’m sharing a few of my own personal travel staples I’ve discovered along the way.

Essential Travel Tips for Packing Dresses

Many fitness and outdoor brands are also starting to make lifestyle lines so you can have stylish clothes that also perform well. Sometimes, you must dig through all the items that scream outdoorsy to find the gems.

We reached out to the major travel and outdoor brands on the market (including Adventure Dress, Anatomie, Fig Clothing, Helene Clarkson, prAna, Rec Room, Toad&Co) to identify their top sellers and then cross-referenced it with numerous travel sites, blogs, and globetrotting friends.

None required inclusion, and we returned any dresses that did not fit or travel well.

Many of these brands are pricier because they use performance fabrics and care more about fair trade and sustainability. But if you’re looking for mid to lower-price range dresses, we included those too.

Before we get into my top choices for dresses, here are some things I’m looking for when searching for the best travel dresses.

  • Comfort  – Though I might carry one fancier dress for a special occasion, most of the clothes I travel with are comfy chic.
  • Versatility  – can be dressed up or down. It’s even better if it’s convertible clothing or a 2-piece dress that makes it easy to mix and match. Usually, convertible clothing can be pretty ugly, but occasionally, you find a gem.
  • Wrinkle Free  – I don’t want to spend part of my trip ironing clothes.
  • Packable  – Light and easy to pack.
  • Performance  – Sweat-wicking or quick drying is icing on the cake. If the dress looks too sporty, though, it’s not a must.
  • Rompers and Jumpsuits? – If you’re outdoors all day with no bathroom, you will not want to strip naked. Trust me, this has happened to me, and it was uncomfortable.

Note: You know your body best and what style looks best on you. I’m generally a size 0 petite. If there’s no petite size, I accept that minis will look like midis, and midis will look like maxis on me.

The Best Travel Dresses in 2024

1. petal tunic dress (on sale $19 from $27) – most affordable →.

Activities:  Urban exploration. Sizing:  XS in Yellow (runs large on me)

It has low-quality fabric , but I’ve worn it for several years, and it holds up better than other fast fashion pieces I’ve owned. It’s mostly for city travel, but I’ve also worn this as a swimsuit cover-up and went SUPing.

The best part is that it’s affordable , and you can go on any adventure without feeling bad that you’ll mess it up .

  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down.
  • Can machine wash cold and tumble dry low.
  • Affordable.
  • Will wrinkle
  • Fabric is not comfortable. It has some stretch but isn’t very soft.
  • Low-quality fabric with a “plasticky” feel, but it’s sewn together well.

2. Free Fly Apparel Heritage Dress ($88) – Most Comfortable Travel Dress →

Activities:  Urban exploration. Materials: 55% Cotton | 45% Viscose from Bamboo Sizing:  XS in Heather Black (true to size but long on me)

This is by far the most comfortable dress I own. Comfortable clothes tend to look slouchier, but this one, surprisingly, is more flattering than I expected. It’s easy to throw on during hot summer days, and luckily, their midi dress hits right at maxi length for me.

I also like layering over this with a sweater during the winter. Also, I must have a favorite pose right now. lol

  • Comfortable and stretchy
  • Soft Fabric
  • UPF 50+ sun protection
  • Flattering fit; not too loose or tight
  • Side slits for easy movement
  • Hang dry recommended
  • Not as many color options

3. Encircled 3-piece Reversible Dressy Knit Dress + Jumpsuit (on Sale $188 from $389) →

Activities:  Urban exploration. Materials: Rayon from Bamboo, Spandex Rib Knit Sizing:  XS in Martini Olive (true to size)

I love this 3-piece set , which can be worn four ways. The top is reversible , with a boat neck on one side and a scoop neck on the other. Then you can pair it with their skirt or their wide-leg pants . My biggest complaint is that the skirt has no pockets.

  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down across multiple seasons.
  • Reversible top .
  • Breathable fabric.
  • Sustainably sourced. Certified B-Corp.
  • Sustainable packaging.
  • Full bra coverage straps.
  • Can machine wash.
  • Pockets on the wide-leg pants .
  • Women-owned, women-run.
  • Pricier, but I don’t mind paying more for sustainable, ethically-made clothes.
  • In some light, you can see unflattering lines created by the tank.
  • Must lay flat to dry (They suggest you always line dry. Did you know air drying can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 2400 lbs a year?).
  • No pockets on the skirt .
  • Will wrinkle.

4. Prana Luxara Dress (On sale $59 from $119) – Best Activewear Dress for Travel →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Outdoor Adventures in Heat, Hot Yoga Material:  76% Recycled Nylon, 24 Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Spiced (true to size on me)

This is an excellent activewear dress, especially for warm-weather destinations like Las Vegas! The Luxara is Prana’s lightest material and is perfect for hiking in the heat. It fits like a hug and is more comfortable than my Girlfriend Collective Lola Dress, my other active dress with a built-in shorty.

  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Moisture wicking and Quick Dry
  • UPF Sun Protection
  • Stretchy and comfortable
  • Built-in shorts
  • Interior pocket in shorts
  • Some recycled materials
  • Only one pocket
  • Some reviews mention it’s too short, but it’s a great length for me.

5. Prana Cozy Up Bayjour Dress (Out of Stock) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Beach, Soft Adventures Material:  55% Hemp | 25% Recycled Polyester | TENCEL™ Lyocell Size Worn:  XS in Heather Grey (true to size)

I loved all my previous Prana dresses (now discontinued), so I knew I would love the Cozy Up Bayjour Dress. It is soft and comfortable , can be dressed up or down , and  pockets  are always a plus. I’ll later post up all the mixing and matching I can do with my wardrobe and this dress.

  • Soft fabric
  • Lightweight than most dresses, but on this list, it’s one of the heavier fabrics.
  • Flattering shape with rib knit tank bodice
  • Bacteria resistant
  • Quick drying
  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down
  • On-seam pockets
  • Some recycled fibers and eco-friendly materials
  • Other reviewers mention the fabric is heavier than expected, and the black color looks faded.
  • The waistline could be higher to be more flattering on petite frames. It’s better for average or taller heights.

6. Toad and co Jumper ($125) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration Material:  100% Organic Cotton Size Worn:  XS in Honey Brown (fits large on me)

I love this jumper for travel days when I have multiple activities requiring multiple outfits. Instead of bringing two outfits per day, I can throw this over the same top, which makes for an easy day-to-night transition. I did this twice on our Washington trip , where I had to hike during the day but had more formal dinners later.

  • Easy to throw on.
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Lots of pockets (one zippered pocket for valuables)
  • Can machine wash
  • Oeko-tex standard
  • Shipped in a recyclable paper sleeve.
  • Joy-backed guarantee. You can return it within 90 days if you don’t get a compliment within three wearings or it doesn’t bring you joy.
  • Runs large if you’re petite, but I don’t mind wearing it looser.

7. Arc’teryx Contenta Dress (Out of Stock) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Outdoor Adventures Material:  100% recycled Diem™ polyester Size Worn:  XS in Light Immersion (true to size on me)

They made a newer version of this dress with a looser silhouette and a scooped neckline. Meanwhile, I still have the older version.

This dress is the  most lightweight option  on here and feels the most breezy out of all the dresses. I especially gravitate towards it on hot summer days (we have plenty of them in Vegas).

  • Lightweight
  • Anti-wrinkle
  • Can wear it two ways.
  • Materials meet the Bluesign criteria for sustainability.
  • The elastic waistband inside is annoying to cinch the waist (the newer version has it on the outside).

8. Anatomie Taya Racerback Maxi Dress (On Sale $78 From $168) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, Beach, Nicer Dinners, Work trips Material:  95% Viscose / 5% Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Navy (true to size on me other than length)

Let me start by saying I’m a big fan of Anatomie’s line of travel clothes. Everything is  high quality . I own two pairs of Skylar Pants in black and gray because they’re perfect for flying, and now this dress!

The performance fabric keeps you comfortable, and the mesh panel makes it perfect for warm-weather travel.

  • Stretchy, Relaxed fit
  • Flattering shape
  • I had to hem it since there are no petite sizes

9. Helene Clarkson Sabi Reversible Halter Dress (on sale $94 from $189) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, Work travel Material:  95% polyester, 5% spandex Size Worn:   XS in teal  (true to size on me)

The material is so soft and comfortable that I can practically  sleep in it ! What initially drew me to this dress was that it’s  reversible , and you can wear it as a mock-neck halter style or a v-neck. Also, since the fabric is so thin, you can wear it as a top with baggier bottoms like joggers.

  • Wrinkle Free
  • Reversible – front is a pleated mock neck, and the back is a relaxed v-neck. I typically only wear it on the mock neck side, though.
  • Hang to dry
  • It’s easy to snag, so be careful around sharp objects or velcro.

10. Bluffworks Threshold Tie Waist T-Shirt Dress (On sale $46 from $78) →

Activities:  Urban exploration Material:  66% Polyester, 29% Lyocell, 5% elastane Size Worn:  XS Petite in Deep Maroon (runs large on me)

Jacob has been wearing Bluffworks clothes for years, and now that they have started carrying women’s clothes, I finally got to check out one of their dresses. Their threshold tie waist t-shirt dress uses a super soft fabric that feels like your old favorite tee. The fit runs a half-size large on me in XS, their smallest size, but most of their reviews say it fits true to size.

  • Comfy, soft fabric.
  • Machine washable
  • Odor resistant
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Moisture wicking/quick drying
  • 4 total pockets (2 on interior)
  • It fits loose on me and isn’t flattering on the side you don’t tie. It probably looks better on you if it fits more snugly.

11. Girlfriend Collective – Lola V-neck Dress (on sale $88) →

Activities:  Hiking, Climbing, Urban exploration. Material:  90% RPET and 10% spandex Size Worn:  XS in alpine (true to size on me)

The Lola V-Neck is perfect for any activity. With its  built-in shorts , you can hike or climb without worrying about flashing people. They make them out of  90% recycled plastic bottles  (RPET).

Plus, they have their  ReGirlfriend recycling program , where they turn your dress into future clothes.

It was also perfect for travel with a  diverse range of activities . We zip-lined in the morning before exploring the city, and the built-in shorts made that all possible.

Girlfriend Collective sent me two dresses to showcase on  my climbing account , but I loved them so much that I included them here.

  • Comfortable fabric.
  • Flattering shape with compression around the waist and hips.
  • Built-in bra.
  • Built-in shorts.
  • Pockets on inner shorts.
  • Sweat-wicking.
  • Ultra-lightweight.
  • Sustainably made from 90% recycled plastic bottles, and they have a recycle program called ReGirlfriend.
  • Must be hang-dried.
  • Doesn’t hide stiff nips, and if you’re already flat, it flattens you more.
  • Harder to take on and off to go to the bathroom.
  • Looks more sporty.

12. Toad and Co Marley Tiered Sleeveless Dress (On Sale $58 from $90) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Beach, Soft Adventures Material:  48% TENCEL™ Lyocell | 48% Organic Cotton | 4% Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Salt (runs large on me)

The Marley Tiered dress is  comfortable,  versatile, and perfect for hot summers. It’s easy to throw on whether lounging at home or exploring the city.

Toad and Co values  sustainability , and I thought it was cute that even their tags are made to be reusable as a coaster.

  • Loose, flowy silhouette
  • Bra-friendly coverage
  • Made with eco-friendly fibers and packaging
  • Joy-backed guarantee
  • The bust runs large for me since I’m petite and flat-chested.

13. Fig CLothing Hampton Dress (On sale $72 from $89) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, soft adventure Material:  100% Cotton (Honeycomb terry) Size Worn:  XS in Terracotta Stripe (true to size on me)

Fig makes practical travel clothes that make no sacrifice on style, and the Hampton dress has been the perfect addition to my capsule wardrobe. I love the simple design and the in-seam pockets.

  • Soft on skin
  • Comfortable
  • UPF 25 solar protection
  • In-seam pockets
  • Quality fabric
  • Heavier than my other travel dresses because of its thicker fabric

14. Milumia Button Up Split Floral Print Flowy Party Maxi Dress ($44) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, beach

I wear an XS in Beige Yellow, but the dress runs big and fits loose on me (I’m a petite XS, sometimes XXS).

The fit isn’t perfect on me, but it still looks great for photos (see photo below). I have other travel bloggers friends with this same dress who own it in multiple colors. If it fits you, it’s a fan favorite.

  • Comfortable, soft fabric
  • Machine Washable
  • Must be line-dried
  • Fits baggy on me.

15. Encircled Chrysalis Cardi Dress ($215) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, in flight.

I learned about Encircled and had the Chrysalis Cardi back in 2015. I love how this wrap dress can be worn in 8+ different ways (see  all the ways here ).

  • Premium quality and made to last
  • Can be worn 8+ different ways
  • Sustainability – They use the most natural and sustainable fabrics available and are a Certified B Corp and Oeko Tex 100 Certified
  • Heavy Fabric
  • Will Wrinkle
  • Must be line-dried and takes a while to dry, but I think the fabric has since changed.
  • Not all the ways have a flattering fit.

encircled chrysalis cardi

Many of my favorite dresses are discontinued now. It’s worth noting that some travel apparel brands that shut down include Rec Room, Vacaystyle, and the Adventure Dress (the website is still there, but all their dresses have been sold out for several years).

Do you own any of these?

  • The Undress  – the dress that lets you undress anywhere.
  • Uniqlo A-line Mini Bra Dress  – love when the bra is built in. So comfy.
  • Toad & Co Camp-co Romper – as long as you don’t mind traveling in a romper. It feels like linen but has a cleaner footprint.

If you want to avoid wrinkles, use these packing tips:

  • Don’t overpack.
  • Lay the dress flat inside a plastic dry cleaning bag. Fold it in its natural shape.
  • Pack them last or on top of everything else.
  • Roll softer garments.
  • Use a  mini travel steamer .
  • If your clothes are wrinkled, hang them in the bathroom while you take a steamy hot shower.

What do you think of these dresses? Which of them would you most likely wear? Have you tried any travel dresses (the ones are specifically made for travel)?

Use of Props and Travel Photo Poses | Outfits, items & more

Using props regardless of the location is a great way to incorporate wanderlust and life into your photos. These creative poses include using flowers, maps, use of hands (peace sign, clothing, suitcase/luggage), and more.

You can always move away from the camera and just use the movement of clothing and hands to really express yourself and get creative!

1. Twirl your skirt or dress

Adding some movement to your travel photos can help create an interesting and unique image. If you’re wearing a skirt or dress, twirling it around in the air is a fun and creative way to show off your outfit while also capturing beautiful motion shots.

Pose 1: Try standing still and throwing the fabric up toward the sky for a dramatic effect.

Pose 2: Lift the loose fabric gently for a more graceful and romantic look.

2. Cover your face with your camera

Get creative and add easy props to make your travel photos stand out.

Covering your face with an object such as a camera is a super cute pose as it adds a whimsical and ethereal feel to the shot.

Tip : Try holding a leaf or camera up to your face with one hand while gesturing out towards something else with your other hand. This type of pose can add layers to the shot while also highlighting the features of your environment and creating a connection between you and them. It’s a great way to emphasize the relationship between yourself and the world around you in your photos!

3. Read a guidebook

Use a travel guidebook as a lovely prop to add a feeling of instant wanderlust to your photos. You can show your face or cover it with a guidebook, whichever you prefer.

travel photo dress

Tip: This is a great way to introduce destinations when you are vacationing as well!

4. Hold a map (or travel brochure)

Another option is to use a travel map (or a brochure) and pretend to be reading it or navigating and planning your next adventure.

You can take a shot by sitting with your head down or looking away.

5. Play with your hair

Playfully interacting with your hair can add a lot of personality and flair to your travel photos. Whether you’re posing solo or with friends, getting creative with the way you style and move your locks can result in some truly stunning images.

Pose 1: Try twirling a few tendrils around your fingers, and gently tucking them behind your ears for a natural, romantic look.

Pose 2: Or just swaying works too!!

Tip : Keep in mind that playing with your hair doesn’t have to involve a lot of styling or time spent in front of the mirror—just a few simple touches can achieve great results. So go ahead and let your hair down, and get creative!

6. Use a hat, or beret (look back and touch your hat)

Using a hat as part of your travel poses can add an extra element of fun and creativity to your photos.

Pose 1: As a pose, you can show your back and hold your hat.

Pose 2: Or touch your hat/ beret and look down.

For a timeless look, try wearing a Trilby hat or fedora with some shades for a classic and chic vibe. You can also mix it up with some more eye-catching options, such as berets, or wide-brimmed straw hats.

Tip : I own hats for every season and berets in various colors! They are not very expensive and you can easily pack them in your carry-on to add a little flair and pop to your photos.

7. Reach for your sunglasses

Pack a pair of sunnies and pose with it. Reaching for your sunglasses is a great pose to add some dynamism and personality to your Instagram photos. This simple yet effective gesture can create an eye-catching silhouette effect, adding depth and movement to your images.

Try to relax and act naturally as you reach for your sunglasses, allowing your body to move with ease and grace.

8. Hold a flower and cover your face or just the eyes

Holding a flower and covering your face or eyes is a great way to capture a playful photo. This pose can bring out the beauty of nature while also adding some fun and mystery to your pictures.

Pose 1: Try holding a wildflower in front of your face, playfully hiding behind it like a mask.

Pose 2: Or try draping the petals over one eye or half of your face to create a dreamy and romantic look (this is perfect for fall photoshoots as well).

Tip : You can use fallen leaves or flowers, or pack a few artificial ones for the purposes of a photo shoot.

9. Throw something in the air

Whether it’s snow, confetti, or leaves, finding interesting objects to throw up in the air can create stunning images with unique textures and colors.

When throwing something into the sky, make sure you find an open space where there is plenty of room to move around without any obstructions. Use the ‘live’ photo options on your iPhone, or the burst mode to capture the right moment.

Experiment with different angles and perspectives to create unexpected and creative looks in your photos.

10. Road trip vibes (car inside or outside)

Road trips are a great way to capture some amazing memories, and there are plenty of unique poses that you can try for your Instagram photos!

Pose 1: One fun idea is to take a photo of yourself from the car side mirrors . This angle works really well when you have interesting scenery or landscape, as it gives an unobstructed view while also adding a sense of movement and adventure.

Pose 2: If you’re feeling daring, try peeking out from the side (or add a victory sign).

Pose 3: Another great pose to try is to stand in front of the car with your friends and pretend that you’re about to drive off on an adventure. This can be especially effective if there are some cool backdrops like mountains or sunsets in the background.

11. Play with an umbrella

Don’t fret when it rains when you are in a new destination. Instead, make use of props like umbrellas or colorful raincoats and strike a pose.

Pose 1: You can cover yourself with an umbrella and pose.

Pose 2: You could even incorporate movement shots by lifting the umbrella over the head – at an angle.

Tip : If you didn’t pack an umbrella and happen to buy it once you arrive at your destination, then you can choose a color to match your outfits or the location.

12. Use a suitcase, backpack and walk away

An ultimate travel prop is a suitcase or backpack that speaks volumes about wanderlust and exploring!

Have your subject (or you) hold a suitcase/bag to create a story of their journey. Use an empty road, or the airport as a backdrop for a unique creation!

Outdoor Travel Photography Poses | Landscapes & Landmarks

When capturing outdoor travel photos in a city or a national park, it is important to find a background that really stands out. A bright and colorful location can bring life to your photos, so look for vibrant wall murals or visually stimulating locations when scouting for a backdrop.

You can always use your lenses and composition skills to frame the subject, add leading lines, depth, etc.

13. Crossing the Street

Walk or cross the street and take an Instagrammable image! This works in both a busy urban area or a tranquil rural setting and is bound to engage those who view your photograph.

Try shooting from a low angle for an added dramatic effect.

Tip: Start early in the morning if you are planning to capture a busy city or landmark to avoid crowds in your shot. Additionally, when traveling solo you will be safe with your belongings and feel confident!

Photoshoot checklist & planner.

Planning a photo shoot can be daunting, but not with our planner!

This planner is designed to help you plan and execute a successful travel photoshoot with ease. It includes a checklist for equipment, packing, location scouting, mood boards, and more – everything you need to know to make your shoot run smoothly.

14. Sit down on a bench

For a more relaxed and candid pose, try sitting down on a bench or chair. This type of photo works well if you’re looking to capture a more casual atmosphere, as it conveys a sense of comfort and ease.

Pose 1: Try sitting down sideways with one leg in front of the other .

Pose 2: Or take a shot from behind without a face . Using props such as a hat, a cup of coffee or a book can also add some character to your photos.

You can also add interest to the shot by incorporating elements around you, like trees, mountains, or buildings in the background.

15. Show your side profile in a cool backdrop

Showcasing your side profile is a great way to capture a striking and dynamic photo.

Try standing in front of a dramatic setting such as an expansive view of the mountain or an urban jungle and show your side profile. You can even bring props with you to add some extra flair to your photo, such as wearing large hats, scarves, etc.

16. Checking your phone (in a busy area)

Sometimes the simplest poses can look really great when done right. If you’re in a busy area, try checking your phone as part of your pose for a more candid and natural look. This type of photo will capture the hustle and bustle of your travels, while still showcasing your personality.

17. Walk away from the camera

If you’re looking for an Instagram pose that will make your followers stop and take notice, try walking away from the camera.

Pose 1 : Take a few steps away from the camera while keeping your gaze fixed on it—this allows you to connect to the audience.

Girl in Havana

Pose 2: You can also capture some stunning shots of you wandering off into the horizon or woods, conveying a feeling of curiosity and adventure that will certainly make your photos stand out from the rest!

18. Sit and enjoy the lovely view

When visiting a new place, one of the best photo poses you can do is simply sit and enjoy the view.

Find a scenic spot with a beautiful landscape or skyline, then take some time to relax and appreciate your surroundings. This type of pose can be extremely calming and peaceful, so it’s perfect for Instagram posts that evoke a sense of serenity and relaxation.

Tip: You can also bring something with you to further personalize the photo, such as a cup of tea or coffee, a book, or a bouquet of flowers.

19. Stand and enjoy the lovely view

You can also stand and admire the view ahead of you! Position yourself in the centre of the frame and then twist a little – if you are wearing a headgear, hold it gently.

Whether you’re looking out into a beautiful landscape, watching the sunset on the horizon, or just taking in your surroundings, this pose can capture some truly breathtaking photos.

Tip : Try framing yourself against an epic backdrop like a mountain range or vast body of water for maximum impact. You can also experiment with different angles and perspectives, like standing in the middle of a field or on top of a hill for an elevated view.

20. Throw up a peace sign

Sit or stand and use your hands – show off a victory or a peace sign – enjoying that EPIC trip of a lifetime!

21. Take a photo with your phone or camera

Take a photo of you taking photos using a phone or camera with a beautiful backdrop. This doesn’t require you to look at the camera, but shows you in your true traveler element!

22. Put your hand on your hip and pose

Putting your hand on your hip and striking a pose can instantly add some pizzazz to any photo. This timeless classic is an especially great pose for travel photos, as it shows off the scenery while also providing a sense of confidence and empowerment.

With one arm slightly bent at the elbow and your hand resting gracefully on your hip, you’ll look both approachable and stylish in the shot.

23. Pretend to walk (and add movement)

Adding movement to your photos can create an interesting and dynamic effect that is sure to draw the eye of viewers. Pretending to walk is a great way to do this while still keeping the focus on you as the subject.

Take a step forward and gently move back and forward (or swing) to create that movement.

24. Frame yourself with something

Framing yourself with nature or other objects can add an interesting twist to your travel photos. Try using the environment around you, such as roads, trees, rivers, and other landmarks as a way to frame your subject.

You could also get creative with flowers and foliage, positioning them around your body or face for a beautiful and natural look.

For a more abstract approach, try using interesting shapes or textures like windows and doorways as frames. This can add depth to your images and draw attention to the main subject in an unexpected way.

Cute Instagram Poses Indoors | Hotels, Cafes & Stores

Now that we covered all the possible outdoor poses and photoshoot ideas, let’s go over a few options for indoor photography.

28. Sitting on the Stairs

Pose 1: Find a grand staircase (or a plain one), and sit at the edge of the step for an angled look.

Pose 2: Or center yourself on top of them for a more composed shot (take the shot from a low level if you wish to capture gorgeous artwork on the handrails).

Tip: Always sit at an angle rather than looking straight into the camera. Place one foot in front of the other.

29.  Enjoy a cuppa

When traveling, taking a photo of yourself seated in a cafe can be a great way to capture the feeling of relaxation and vacation.

You can capture yourself in the moment of sipping your drink while sitting at one of the tables—this can be a great way to tell stories without using words!

30. Hold your drink

Another super easy pose to try at a cafe.

Pose 1: Try sitting outside with your wine, tea, or coffee cup held near your face, allowing for the natural light to enhance your features and make you glow.

Pose 2: Alternatively, you could try turning away from the camera for a more candid and relatable shot.

31. Put one hand/arm up from the balcony

Putting one hand up from a balcony makes for an eye-catching and dramatic photo pose. This simple yet powerful gesture will draw attention to your figure and bring out the beauty of the landscape or the view behind you.

travel photo dress

This pose works especially well if you’re in a high-rise building or balcony overlooking an amazing view. If possible, try capturing the sky in your photos for an even more breathtaking look.

Whether it’s a sunny day, twilight hour, or nighttime—this pose will make your Instagram feed truly stand out!

32. Snap a Mirror Selfie

Taking close-up selfies is a great way to express yourself and capture memorable moments while traveling.

Whether it’s a classic selfie with your phone at arm’s length or an intimate portrait with a friend, getting close to the camera will draw attention to your facial expressions and emotions.

I like using pretty mirrors or finding glass that reflects, especially when I am outdoors. This type of pose can be powerful when telling stories or highlighting special memories in your favorite destination, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your angles and lighting.

This is also great for taking outfit photos. With a little experimentation, you can create truly captivating selfies that capture the essence of your travels!

33. Interact with a Prop (hotel room ideas)

Interacting with a prop in your hotel room can be a great way to add some personality and storytelling to your photos. Whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, try incorporating everyday objects like books, magazines, food, or clothing into your shots for an interesting visual effect.

For example, try reading a book while lying in bed for a cozy and relaxed look. Hold a glass, and say cheers!

Or bring breakfast in bed to create a more intimate and intimate feeling.

Tip: And of course, don’t forget to use the items in your wardrobe—a bright and colorful outfit can go a long way towards creating an eye-catching photo!

34. Admire an artwork or painting (in a museum)

Admiring a piece of artwork or painting can be a great way to capture the beauty and emotion of your trip in a photo.

Pose 1: Whether you’re at an art museum or gallery, simply sit to admire the piece of artwork.

Pose 2: Or standing in front of any large artwork with a contemplative look on your face can make for some stunning photos.

35. Wake me up look (in a hotel)

The ‘wake me up’ look can be a great way to capture the beauty and comfort of your hotel stay in an Instagram photo. Whether you’re in a five-star resort or a simple inn, getting cozy in bed with some pillows and blankets will make for some beautiful shots.

You can also try capturing yourself relaxing on the couch, lounging in an armchair, or taking a seat at the mini bar for some creative and interesting poses.

Tip: For extra detail, try adding elements like eye masks, breakfast trays, room service items, and even your suitcase or passport to add more context to your photos. Not only will this create a sense of luxury and relaxation in your images, but it will also give your followers a glimpse into your travels and hotel experiences.

36. Lean in or Lean out from the balcony

Leaning out from the balcony can be a great way to add some drama and adventure to your Instagram photos. Wear a flowy dress or a skirt and lean forward (or look out) from the balcony.

Budget Travel Tips : Didn’t book a hotel room with a balcony? A rooftop bar or terrace will also work for a similar look. You can also lean against the wall and pose – play with your hair, look out, etc.

In-action & Activities: Posing Ideas for Instagram

You don’t need a Go Pro or any adventure camera for this (bonus if you do, but it’s not a necessity). Now, on to the poses

37. Sit on the floor (swimming pool or poolside)

Adding an extra dose of fun and creativity to your Instagram photos can be as simple as sitting on the floor by a swimming pool. This is a flattering pose as it is perfect for any time of year (plus you can hide your face and tummy).

Try putting one leg on top of the other to create a beautiful shape and symmetry while also adding some dynamic movement to the shot.

38. Throw snow – snow fight (in the winter)

Throwing snow in the air is one of the easy poses in the winter.

Try throwing handfuls of snow up towards the sky for an explosive effect, or running around in circles while letting it fly from your hands for some more whimsical shots.

You can also try having a snow fight with friends! Not only will it be fun, but you can create some great memories while also getting some amazing photos.

Use your hands to make snowballs and aim them at each other while making silly expressions or playfully ducking away from the snow—this will bring an extra layer of fun and energy to the shot.

39. Pottery class

Taking pictures in a pottery class can be an enjoyable and creative way to capture the beauty of your travels.

Pose 1: Whether you’re working on a bowl, plate, or vase, simply holding the clay in your hands while taking pictures can make for some interesting photos.

Pose 2: Or have someone take close-up shots of the clay in your hands as you’re working on it, as this can add an extra element of texture and movement to your photos.

travel photo dress

You can also try taking pictures of yourself in the middle of a creative process, such as spinning the wheel or shaping the clay with your hands—this will capture the beauty and energy of creating something with your own two hands.

40. Cooking class

Taking pictures in a cooking class can be a great way to document and showcase your culinary adventures.

Pose 1: Take photos mid-action—like of yourself stirring ingredients, plating up dishes, or cutting vegetables.

Pose 2: You can also experiment with different angles and take a shot once the items are ready.

41. Stop for a pose while biking or cycling

While biking or cycling, get down and stop for a pose – you can look away or smile shyly. My husband took this photo right outside the Basel SBB to share taking off from the station!

You can also try different poses, such as standing side-by-side with your bike, leaning against the handlebars, or just sitting and enjoying the view.

42. On a hike (with related gear)

Hiking is an amazing way to explore nature and capture beautiful photos while doing it.

Pose 1: Wear your hiking clothes and shoes and pretend to walk or climb for a photo.

Pose 2: Try getting creative with your angles when taking pictures – like get your photographer to stand at an elevated level and then take a photo from there — focusing on the views below/around.

43. Look outside and ponder on a cruise

If you are vacationing on a cruise, one of the easy ways to take a vacation shot is to look outside (into the ocean) and then take a shot.

You can also try standing near one of the windows or doors, allowing natural light to illuminate your features and bring out your beauty.

44. Have fun on a Tuk Tuk ride

Climbing aboard a Tuk Tuk is the perfect way to get some fun shots for your Instagram. Have your driver/operator stop at scenic places along the journey and snap away while enjoying some of the most incredible views around you!

Stand on the edge of the Tuk Tuk and peek outside (flowy dresses or skirts are nicer).

45. Look outside from a plane/ car/ train window

Nothing gives a more wanderlust vibe than a mode of transportation – a plane, car, or train window.

If you’re in an airplane, try taking a shot of the window – with the subject peeking out. Or switch an airplane to a train ride with views – it is one of the natural poses to capture when traveling.

Solo Shots (without you/your face)

These travel photography ideas are perfect if you are traveling solo, or do not wish to show your face. Use your hands, phone, purse, or whatever you have with you to show your presence and take a shot!

I use this technique a lot when I am traveling alone, exploring a busy place, or when I am not ready to show my tired face 🙂

46. The Close Up

Close-up shots are a great way to capture the details of your environment or an object. You can also take portrait shots of yourself.

If you do not want yourself in the frame, try taking photos of items that you encounter on your travels like souvenirs, street art, or unique architecture .

47. Smile at the Camera

Look at the camera and smile – simple as that!

Don’t want to smile at the camera – say cheers without showing your face. Raise a glass and take a shot!

49. Use your purse or phone as your signature style in a cafe/destination

Prefer not to show your face? Use your pretty purse or phone as a substitute.

50. Hold an item – same as the destination

Another option is to hold an item such as a coffee mug, magnet, etc. to introduce a destination you are in!

How to Pose for Photos as a Couple or as a Group

51. sit down together (picnic, cafe, etc).

Sit down in a park, and pose together – enjoying the lovely weather or picnic.

52. Cheers, hold drinks together

Hold your drinks, look at the camera and say ‘cheers’!

You can also create this photo without faces and with a group!

Whether a close-up of a couple kissing or capturing a silhouette from a distance with a gorgeous landscape – kissing is simple and makes for amazing couple shots!

54. Look into each other’s eyes

Focus on one subject looking into the eyes of the partner. This is a simple pose and is perfect for engagement photos.

55. Follow me away style

This is one of the popular Instagrammable shots where a girl is leading and the photographer is holding on and following!

Try to re-create this composition in your next location (or use it when you are buying a new house/ housewarming invites, etc)

Fashion Outfit Ideas | Photoshoot Dress Ideas

Finding the perfect outfit for your photoshoot can be a challenge, but don’t worry—there are so many stylish and timeless looks that you can choose from.

  • Flowy outfits : Flowy dresses or skirts with movement are great options for creating an effortless and romantic feel. They are also very lightweight and easy to pack.
  • Classic white or pastel tones look amazing against a backdrop of nature.
  • If the backdrop is busy (like a city/urban landscape), then plain colors without much print work well.
  • Red, yellow, and white can be used in most compositions (urban or nature)
  • Props : Props are also great for adding another layer to your photoshoot photos. Choose items like hats, scarves, sunglasses, and jewelry that you can play around with. You can also bring along items from home like books or flowers for an added touch of personality.

If I have some room in my luggage, I always add 1-2 shoes for photos, a mini bag, battery-operated lights, fake leaves, etc. You can buy these props/items on Amazon.

Travel photography tips.

Whether it’s posing solo or with friends, it’s important to think about your angles, expressions, and body positioning before snapping that Instagram-worthy shot.

Here are some quick tips for travel photography poses that will help you take the perfect vacation photo!

The first tip when taking travel photos is to find a background that really stands out. A bright and colorful location can bring life to your photos, so look for vibrant wall murals or visually stimulating locations when scouting for a backdrop.

If you’re posing with friends on group trips, it’s also important to find a spot with enough room for everyone to stand comfortably.

The next tip is to keep your body language in mind when posing. A confident posture can make all the difference, so think about how you want to be perceived in the photo.

If you’re feeling shy, don’t be afraid to give a subtle smile or side glance.

Looking away from the camera is also a great posing idea.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, try out playful poses such as handstands or jumping into the air with friends!

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with angles when taking pictures. You can make use of props like benches and tables to get different perspectives for your shots.

Trying a bird’s-eye view or a low angle can bring out interesting details and shapes in your pictures.

Plus, don’t forget to play around with the lighting—a great way to add drama and depth to your photos is by using natural light from windows and doorways.

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a zip-up hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J. McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Versatile Travel Dresses

Why Trust PEOPLE?

People / Getty / Gwyneth Paltrow / Instagram

As a travel writer, my suitcase is nearly always half-packed. Long flights demand comfort, but new sights and cities demand style . To complicate matters, I’m a maximalist, so traditional travel advice to cram a small capsule wardrobe into a backpack never quite appeals to me, even if I have to fight the luggage scale when checking in for my flight.

Packing properly for any trip can be daunting, whether you’re throwing together a duffel for a girls’ weekend or filling a checked bag  for a multi-month jaunt all over Europe. Still, my adventures across multiple countries, climates, and time zones taught me to reach for certain staples — like comfortable walking shoes and a reliable crossbody purse — time and time again. While nailing down my perfect travel wardrobe, I turned to on-the-go celebrities like Taylor Swift and Emily Blunt for inspiration.

A packing list comprised of versatile dresses, flowy pants, maxi skirts, and breezy shirts can go a long way — literally. Read on for the best celeb-inspired travel clothes for women to pack for your upcoming trips, as determined by shopper insights, professional style writers, celebrity research, and more.

Dresses give you plenty of bang for your buck when it comes to traveling. For one, they tend to be flexible compared to other clothing items: You can dress them up or down more effectively to target a specific dress code. Chic maxi dresses reigned supreme last summer, and Meghan Markle recently elevated  that trend in a silky high-neck maxi dress — stylish enough for a formal engagement but breezy enough for an afternoon in the sun.

Dresses of varying lengths also tend to be more conducive to layering. While summer may be “sundress season,” and we see celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow reaching for transitional midi styles in spring, the right travel dress can be an effective staple in your winter wardrobe, too. You can keep the style in your cold-weather repertoire by winterizing the look like Emily Ratajkowski . Opt for a darker colorway, chunky boots, and maybe a sweater.

The Drop Women’s Britt Tiered Maxi Tent Dress

This tiered maxi dress has an array of 1,900+ perfect five-star ratings on Amazon for its airiness — and rave reviews from multiple PEOPLE writers . It’s such a classic silhouette for all occasions, and it has the most coveted design detail on dresses: pockets. Shoppers do note that there’s little stretch, so consider your bust size when ordering.

Sizes: XXS–5X | Materials: 100% Tencel Lyocell | Colors: 18

Editors Say

“I bought this maxi dress from The Drop when it was on sale, and I’m going to buy two more at full price — that’s how much I love it. In fact, I have to force myself not to wear it multiple times a week. It’s comfortable, lightweight, and flattering for my short, curvy body. It even has pockets and adjustable straps that can be crossed in the back. The best part, though? I don’t have to wear a bra!” — Kayla Kitts , shopping editor

Linen Roll Tab Dollman Midi Dress

Chico's

An ankle-skimming midi always comes in handy, and a linen fabric is an excellent choice for temperature regulation: cooling in warmer climates yet cozy in cooler ones. This relaxed, button-down frock comes in whimsical watermelon and khaki hues. It even has adjustable, oversized sleeves for added comfort.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 100% linen | Colors: 2

Skinny Strap Seamless Mini Slip

Free People

Free People excels in lightweight, flattering, multi-use dresses. Most pieces in their slip category — like this itty-bitty seamless LBD — can be worn as an undergarment, dress, or top. (Just tuck it in!) Each slip truly compresses down to nothing, making it the ultimate space-saving garment.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 92% nylon, 8% spandex | Colors: 3

Roxy Golden Dawn Dress

Everybody needs a comfortable floral sundress to throw on in warmer climates, especially after a sunburn. Whether you frequent the beach in your travels or just want something soft that wears in well over time, this Roxy pick is built for comfort.

Available Sizes: M, L | Materials: Viscose | Colors: 1

Tencel Jersey Tank Maxi Dress

This Quince pick has a soft, comfy stretch ideal for long days on your feet, and is even made of biodegradable fabric. With six colorways and a  lightweight and sleeveless silhouette, this dress almost guarantees plenty of use.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: Tencel, spandex | Colors: 6

The right flowy pants can make the ultimate base layer, whether you’re on a nine-hour flight or dressing to the nines. Loose, roomier pants have been all the rage this year, with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence , Zendaya , and Emily Blunt all sporting various wide-leg styles.

Similarly, breezy white maxi skirts are majorly on trend right now (and always), stylist Liz Teich told PEOPLE. Just look at Katie Holmes stepping out in NYC. She exemplifies how airy styles can be  great for warmer weather, but still look polished. Plus, the lighter fabrics are literally lighter in your bag, so why not throw in another?

Tronjori High Waist Casual Wide Leg Palazzo Pants

This Amazon pick embodies the quintessential palazzo pant we’ve all bookmarked on Pinterest. The wide leg and high waist are timeless, and the pair comes in a whopping 31 different colorways, plus tall and petite variations.

Sizes: XS–XXL, short and long options | Materials: Polyester | Colors: 31

Hermoza Rachel Skirt Dress

While this one’s more of a splurge, its multifunctionality makes it a worthy all-in-one piece for any vacation. As a frequent traveler and Hawai’i resident, I was absolutely flabbergasted (and fascinated) when I found out this floral maxi skirt/dress hybrid is made of durable swimsuit material.

Pair it with the matching swimsuit top for a striking two-piece set by the beach, wear it as a vibrant maxi dress to dinner, or style the skirt alone with a gauzy button-down and sandals for a jaunt through town. Of course, I love how convenient it is to wash and dry for travels, too.

Sizes: XS–L | Materials: Polyester, elastane | Colors: 1

Nashalyly Chiffon High-Waisted Pleated Skirt

This shopper-favorite maxi skirt has over 5,000 five-star ratings from Amazon customers, who note that you’ll want to size up for the best fit. Reviewers appreciate the skirt’s easy movement, comfortable elastic waist, and how many outfits they can build with it.

Sizes: S–3XL | Materials: Chiffon | Colors: 44

Daily Practice by Anthropologie Parachute Pants

Anthropologie

These pants are my personal go-to. I wear them to work in, to work out in, and to casual gatherings and nights out with friends. Most crucially, I wear them every single time I pass through an airport. They’re incredibly comfortable, lightweight (I tend to overheat on travel days), and adaptable, with plenty of pockets for easy ID and passport access. I’ve bought them in multiple colors, from neutrals to bolds.

Sizes: XXS–3X plus petite sizing | Materials: Nylon | Colors: 9

Even if you’re wearing the same pair of jeans day in, day out for the duration of your ten-day stint to Australia, Greece, or wherever you’re traveling, the right top can make a similar foundation feel like an entirely different look. First, you’ll want a collection of sleek, basic tanks and tops for ultimate versatility. Or perhaps a nautical, striped button down, ideally summoning visions of boat days and beachside barbecues. (Oh, and easy sun protection.) As Jessica Alba proves with white jeans and coordinating sneakers, the look is seasonal and sophisticated .

And is there anything better than wearing a delicate eyelet blouse on a hot summer day? A breezy blouse can serve as a dressy swimsuit cover-up at the beach. It can also keep your wardrobe work-friendly while on a Zoom meeting across time zones, or give a romantic vibe during date night.

Wear it loose like Taylor Swift out for a summer walk, or tucked in like Jennifer Aniston at dinner in Paris. Either way, a casual blouse might just be a better companion on your vacation than your plus one.

Wild Fable Cap Sleeve Ruched Side Seam T-Shirt

This pullover top can be styled in a variety of ways, making it a must-have on any trip with limited packing space. The subtle side ruching and cap sleeve add some feminine detail that dress it up for more elevated occasions, but it’s definitely casual enough to rock on a daily basis. As another PEOPLE writer noted , the cap sleeve is an ideal middle ground between a tank and short sleeve — which might be why Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift are so fond of the style.

Sizes: XXS–4X | Materials: Recycled polyester, spandex | Colors: 4

H&M Top with Eyelet Embroidery Sleeves

A simple eyelet short-sleeve top can serve you on many occasions, whether jetting off on a day trip or trekking to your regular weekend brunch spot. At only $20, this adorable H&M puff-sleeve is just frothy enough to add a little je ne sais quoi , but has a  French simplicity at its core.

Sizes: XS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 3

Gap Modern Mock Neck

Deal alert.

This Gap tank is up to 60 percent off in a range of neutral and stripe patterns for a limited time.

There’s never a bad time to stock up on flattering basics like this Gap tank. Available in regular, tall, and petite sizes, this Meghan Markle -esque mock-neck top has a straight silhouette and slim fit, and truly goes with everything .

Sizes: XXS–XXL, in regular, tall, and petite | Materials: 58% cotton, 39% modal, 3% spandex | Colors: 5

AE Perfect Button-Up Shirt

American Eagle

Right now, this American Eagle button-up is 60 percent off in all colors.

Okay, we’ll admit it: We never quite got over the coastal grandmother trend. And why should we? The whole point is that it’s timeless, classic, and elegant whether you’re going all-in on a preppy look or simply throwing on a striped button-down as a cover-up after the beach. This soft, effortless shirt has a slightly oversized fit for extra comfort.

Sizes: XXS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 8

The Other Travel Clothes You’re Forgetting

Tops? Check. Flowy pants and skirts? Check. Dresses that you can wear out or treat as a cover-up? Practically the daily uniform. Still, there are a few other staples you’ll want to make sure you have on hand, too. It’s an oft-repeated cliché, but layering truly is key.

Levi’s Womens 501 Original Jean Shorts

These Levi’s shorts are currently 40 percent off at Amazon.

Jean shorts are essential for casual days strolling through a city or impromptu meetups with friends. Throw them on over a sleek swimsuit or break them out in transitional weather. And this isn’t the only Levi’s denim we’re fond of — two of its most popular jeans hold space in our team’s closets, too.

Sizes: 23–39 | Materials: Denim | Colors: 44

AE Long Weekend Crewneck Sweater

This American Eagle Crewneck Sweater is 60 percent off for a limited time.

A layerable neutral sweater is another travel must-have, especially in that frigid airplane air conditioning. Similarly, for those long stretches away from home, an oversized sweater can also be a cuddly comfort for when you’re missing your own bed.

Sizes: XXS–L | Materials: Cotton | Colors: 1

How to Pack the Best Travel Clothes

When building your travel wardrobe, you’ll want to consider factors like trip duration, climate, and more. Do you want year-round items or would you rather commit to rotating your staples seasonally? Will you have access to laundry? (If not, you’ll want to opt for fabrics that wick away odor and sweat so you can get multiple wears out of each item.) Are there sights or situations that have etiquette requirements and dress codes requiring a certain amount of coverage?

Some personal guidance as a travel expert: Many packing guides might swear by a neutral, minimalist capsule wardrobe for ultimate frequency of wear, but you shouldn’t be afraid to go maximalist either. If you pick comfortable, durable pieces, you’ll still get more use from those “singular” funky outfits than you expect — and your camera roll will thank you for choosing the pieces you actually love most. Similarly, accessories like bold jewelry or belts generally take up very little luggage real estate but go a long way in elevating any look. Might as well add some pizzazz to your Pisa pic, right?

And don’t forget the packing cubes and travel organizers to get the most space out of your carry-on suitcase , either.

Your photo is a vital part of your visa application. To learn more, review the information below on how to provide a suitable photo. Digital images are required for some visa categories, while photos are required for other visa categories. The acceptance of your digital image or photo is at the discretion of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you apply.

We recommend you use a professional visa photo service to ensure your photo meets all the requirements.

Your photos or digital images must be:

  • Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 mm and 35 mm) or 50% and 69% of the image's total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the  Photo Composition Template  for more size requirement details.
  • Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
  • Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
  • Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
  • With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
  • Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis
  • Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.
  • Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
  • Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
  • The frames of the eyeglasses must not cover the eye(s).
  • There must not be glare on eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s).
  • There must not be shadows or refraction from the eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s).
  • If you normally wear a hearing device or similar articles, they may be worn in your photo.

Review the  Photo Examples  to see examples of acceptable and unacceptable photos. Photos copied or digitally scanned from driver’s licenses or other official documents are not acceptable. In addition, snapshots, magazine photos, low quality vending machine or mobile phone photos, and full-length photographs are not acceptable.

Please review the additional photo requirements for:

  • Nonimmigrant Visas
  • Immigrant Visas
  • Diversity Visa (DV) Program

Change of Appearance

Additional requirements for nonimmigrant visas.

Applicants using Form DS-160 or Form DS-1648

If you are applying for a nonimmigrant visa by filling out the DS-160 or DS-1648 online form, the form will instruct you to upload your digital image as part of completing the online visa application form. Review the  Digital Image Requirements , which also provide additional requirements if you are scanning an existing photo.

Some embassies and consulates require visa applicants to bring one (1) photo, which meets requirements, to the interview. Review the  embassy or consulate  instructions where you will apply to learn more.

Additional Requirements for Immigrant Visas

 Applicants using Form DS-260

If you are applying for an immigrant visa, using Form DS-260, you must provide  two (2) identical photos  at your immigrant visa interview. Your photos must be:

  • Printed on photo quality paper
  • 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size

Additional Requirements for the Diversity Visa (DV) Program

Diversity Visa Program Entrants

If you are entering the Diversity Visa (DV) Program online, you must upload your digital image as part of your entry. Your digital image must be:

  • In JPEG (.jpg) file format
  • Equal to or less than 240 kB (kilobytes) in file size
  • In a square aspect ratio (height must equal width)
  • 600x600 pixels in dimension

Do you want to scan an existing photo? In addition to the digital image requirements, your existing photo must be:

  • 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm)
  • Scanned at a resolution of 300 pixels per inch (12 pixels per millimeter)

Diversity Visa Program Selectees

Each DV applicant will need to bring two (2) identical photos to the interview. Your photos must be:

Do you want to take the photo yourself?

While we recommend you use a professional visa photo service to ensure your photo meets all the requirements, you may take the photo yourself. Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance in any way. Please review the following technical requirements and references for guidance on taking your own photo.

Use the Department of State’s free photo tool to:

Please note: This tool is intended for photo cropping only. A Department of State employee will make the final decision whether your visa photo is acceptable or not for your application.

Taking photos of your baby or toddler

When taking a photo of your baby or toddler, no other person should be in the photo, and your child should be looking at the camera with his or her eyes open.

If your photo(s) or digital image does not reflect your current appearance, even if it is not older than 6 months, the U.S. embassy or consulate will request that you provide a new photo with your application.

Applicants will be requested to obtain a new photo if they have:

  • Undergone significant facial surgery or trauma
  • Added or removed numerous/large facial piercings or tattoos
  • Undergone a significant amount of weight loss or gain
  • Made a gender transition

Generally, if you can still be identified from the photo in your visa application, you will not need to submit a new photo. For example, growing a beard or coloring your hair would not generally be considered a significant change of appearance.

If the appearance of your child under the age of 16 has changed due to the normal aging process, he or she will generally not have to provide a new photo. However, the acceptance of your photo or digital image is at the discretion of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you apply.

Already have a photo?

Use our  Photo Tool  to crop your photo so it's the right size.

  • This photo tool does not check the quality of your image.
  • This tool is for cropping your photo only when you are applying or renewing using a paper form.
  • Do not use this tool if you are renewing online.

After you apply, a U.S. Department of State employee will review your photo and decide if we can accept your photo.

In the picture, Rajwa wears a bright red pleated maxi dress from Alice + Olivia , two gold bangles from Rainbow K , and dramatic dangling earrings. Rajwa clearly has an affinity for the color red; in a snap shared by her husband to celebrate her 30th birthday , she's also wearing a ruby dress (and Schiaparelli's dramatic "Mouth and Eye" pendant earrings ).

The Royal Hashemite Court announced that Rajwa and Prince Hussein were expecting their first child this past March. The royal baby is due this summer, and he or she will be the first grandchild of Queen Rania and King Abdullah. If the baby is a boy, he will be second in line to the Jordanian throne.

"The Royal Hashemite Court extends its sincere congratulations to Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania Al Abdullah on this occasion, and wishes Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Al Hussein and Princess Rajwa good health and joy as they welcome their baby," the Court wrote in the announcement.

After meeting through a mutual friend and getting engaged in 2022 , Rajwa and Hussein married on June 1, 2023 in a glamorous wedding in Amman, attended by royals and VIPs from around the world , including Kate Middleton , Princess Beatrice , and First Lady Jill Biden .
