The roots of Khalsa Jatha British Isles date back to the early 20th century when Sikh immigrants first settled in the British Isles. Faced with the challenges of a new land, they sought to establish a spiritual sanctuary where they could connect with their faith and culture. In 1908, their dreams culminated in the establishment of this Gurdwara in the heart of London, becoming the first Gurdwara in Europe.

India and the UAE have generally enjoyed cordial relations, partly due to their shared history with the British presence in Asia, and partly due to the pre-colonial history of trade, commerce and settlement between the two nations. Dubai is an Oasis of religious tolerance.

Sikhs living in the UAE had no common place to gather to worship or celebrate religious festivals or weddings. In Dubai, the Bur Dubai temple and private homes being used for mass gatherings were bursting, prompting community leaders to look into the possibility of building a larger space for the worship of the Guru Granth Sahib. They grew from five families to 10 families to 50 families and it became hard for them to ask the hostess to make 400 chapattis in a day. So they decided that whoever comes bring 10 chapattis, and the hostess would make the vegetables and the dal. Though temporary Gurudwaras had come and gone, the community needed a permanent place of worship.

The very thought of building a permanent and official Gurdwara in the heart of an Islamic state was considered nothing short of an Arabian mirage. The push for an official Gurudwara began about 27 years ago. The proposals kept getting knocked back but they did not give up. It was a pleasant and joyous surprise when consent was received from the Council of Imams. To add to the joy and sense of well-being, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, bestowed a piece of land free of charge, for the Sikhs to build their Gurdwara.

The ultra-modern Gurudwara is a rare piece of architectural design- A blend of modern and traditional building styles. Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar is the manifestation of this Truth. It envelopes all within its warm embrace, irrespective of caste or creed – bringing peace, solace, and hope for one and all.

On February 4, 2006 The Indianapolis Star reported, "Visit the Gurdwara Sahib (Temple) near Indianapolis any day of the week and you'll likely see a wedding, memorial service or cultural event taking place. Built in 1999, the Gurdwara is home base for many Sikhs who call Central Indiana home. Though small in number here, Sikhs make up the fifth-largest religion in the world. If you want to enter the Gurdwara, custom demands that you take off your shoes and cover your head with a scarf or turban. During a recent service inside the diwan hall, musicians played the harmonium, tablas and other percussion instruments, giving voice to the hymns in the Sikh scriptures... Participants walk to the raised canopied platform, on which the sacred scriptures are placed under brocaded silks. There they pray and make an offering. Later in this service, Giani Pritam Singh, the Granthi or head priest of the Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis, reads from the scriptures and then leads the group in prayer. At the end of the service, a whole-wheat flour pudding is given to the participants in a 'sacrament/blessed offering.' After the service, [a] North Indian vegetarian lunch is served in the langar hall."

Virtual Tour Sikh Gurduara

Watch a virtual tour of the Sikh Temple, the Sikh Gurduara Sahib Temple, in Doyles Road, Shepparton.

The Sikh Community in the Goulburn Valley comprises approximately 200 families, who find the local agrarian economy not unlike that of the Punjab in North India, where many Sikhs who have migrated hail from.

The virtual tour is introduced by Malwinder Singh of the Sikh Gurduara Sahib community. Malwinder Singh gives an overview of the Sikh migration to Shepparton and surrounding districts, and introduces the various aspects of the Sikh faith and its practices. Several others are also interviewed, and the langaar hall is shown, along with an explanation of various rituals conducted during a typical Sunday Sikh worship service.
