la Tour Zizim

Monument emblématique de la ville de bourganeuf.

la Tour Zizim, construite entre 1484 et 1486, est conçue à l’origine comme une prison.

Elle était en effet destinée à accueillir le prince DJEM, dit ZIZIM, qui avait trouvé refuge auprès de Pierre d’Aubusson, alors Grand Maître de Rhodes et chevalier de l’ordre de St Jean de Jérusalem pour se protéger de son frère, BAZAJET II, régnant sur le monde ottoman. Cette tour, maintenant isolée de l’ensemble du château, est bâtie sur 5 niveaux : elle comprend une cave avec un puits fermé et des combles couronnés par une magnifique charpente en bois dite « en poivrière », son toit culmine à 35 mètres du sol.

La tour Zizim et la cité médiévale

Visiter la cité médiévale de Bourganeuf , c’est vraiment plonger dans l’histoire d’un autre temps aux allures orientales. Bourganeuf garde le souvenir de Zizim , fils d’un puissant sultan ottoman, Méhémet II. Pour ce prince en exil, une tour prison fut spécialement construite entre 1484 et 1486. C’est une tour puissante de six étages, aux murs épais de 2,80 m, percés de meurtrières et à l’impressionnante charpente. Cette vocation carcérale s’est confirmée lors de la seconde guerre mondiale avec des résistants prisonniers qui ont laissé de nombreux et émouvants graffitis sur les murs. Si la présence de Zizim a suscité de multiples légendes, la Tour Lastic et celle de l’Escalier – qui doit son nom à un escalier à vis remarquable – sont, elles, bien réelles. Le château , quant à lui, fut construit par les Hospitaliers entre 1150 et 1160. Il avait pour vocation d’héberger les voyageurs , les pèlerins et permettaient d’hospitaliser les malades.

The Zizim tower was built at the end of the 15th century by Pierre d'Aubusson to accommodate Djem, the son of an Ottoman sultan. Nicknamed "Zizim", this prince lived for two years in Creuse before leaving, but he left his nickname to the tower. During the Second World War, the seven-storey tower was used as a prison for resistance fighters who left graffiti. Nowadays, his visit allows you to walk up the 99 steps that lead under the magnificent oak roof and discover with the help of illustrated panels testimonies of the resistance, documents on the Order of Malta and the Prince, etc. Near the tower is a castle built in the 12th century by the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. Widely transformed over time, it now houses the Town Hall. Its austere architecture reflects the spirit of the soldier-monks. There are two beautiful towers: the Lastic Tower and the Staircase Tower.

L'église de Saint Martin a été construite au XIII ème siecle et rénovée au XVè siecle. Elle se compose d'une nef à cinq travées, d'un chevet plat, de voûtes sur croisées d'ogives. Trois chapelles ajoutées, dont l'une doit être l'ancienne chapelle sépulcrale de Villeneuve. Devant l'entrée à gauche du portail se tient un lion de granit terrassant un homme.

LE CONTEXTE DES CHATEAUX EN LIMOUSIN

Du XIIe au XVe siècle, on voit les lignages seigneuriaux possesseurs du lieu édifier des tours, des hostels et des murs, constituant ainsi une citadelle dont la fin arrivera avec l’avènement de l'artillerie. En effet, le site pouvait facilement être bombardé des hauteurs avoisinantes. Au XIVe, Merle comprend sept châteaux, deux chapelles et un village, possédés en indivision par sept seigneurs des familles de Merle, de Carbonnières, de Veyrac, de Pestels.

Le château construit au XIe siècle, remanié vraisemblablement au cours de plusieurs campagnes de construction et de reconstruction s'échelonnant pour l'essentiel du XIIe siècle, commandait la Vicomté de Ventadour dont les capitales étaient Égletons, Ussel et Meymac. Par sa situation et sa formidable défense, le château semblait imprenable. Il fut cependant pris par trahison et, treize années durant, il resta aux mains de Geoffroy Tête-Noire pendant la guerre de Cent Ans.

La famille des Comborn, dont on retrouve trace dés le X° siècle, possédait en effet une forteresse publique. Le nom d’Archambaud est porté jusqu’au XIV° siècle par le chef du lignage qui transmet, d’une génération à l’autre, le titre de vicomte et par là-même le château qui constitue le siège de la vicomté.

C'est au IXe siècle (823) qu'apparaissent les premiers seigneurs de Turenne1 . Devenue un véritable État féodal à la suite des croisades, puis un des plus grands fiefs de France au XIVe siècle, la vicomté de Turenne jouit du Moyen Âge au XVIIIe siècle d'une autonomie complète. Jusqu'en 1738, les vicomtes, tenus à un simple hommage d'honneur envers le roi et exempts d'impôts à son égard, agissent en véritables souverains : ils réunissent des États généraux, lèvent les impôts, battent monnaie.

Le premier château (castrum) a été fondé vers 1100. Au cours du 13e siècle, il a été dédoublé en deux fortifications : le Haut et le Bas Châlucet. Alors que Châlucet Bas est resté une coseigneurie gérée par plusieurs lignages de chevaliers, Châlucet Haut a été profondément modifié vers 1270 - 1280 par la création en son coeur d'un château neuf.

Une forteresse semble y avoir été édifiée entre 997 et 1018. Le château attesté pour la première fois dans une charte des années 1200-12101. Une des tours subsistantes porte le nom d'Isabelle d'Angoulême, veuve de Jean sans Terre, épouse de Hugues de Lusignan comte de la Marche, qui, suivant une tradition, l'aurait fait construire. Au XIIe siècle, les capitaines du lieu sont des Foucault, seigneurs de Saint-Germain-Beaupré. Au XIIIe siècle les Comtes de La Marche dressent le château.

Le château fort de la ville basse de Châlus a été construit de 1275 à 1280 par Géraud de Maulmont (ou Maumont), conseiller de la vicomtesse de Limoges Marguerite de Bourgogne, sur des terres relevant alors de la seigneurie de Chalusset.

Le site est occupé dès le XIe siècle, comme en témoigne la haute motte castrale située à proximité immédiate de l'actuel château. En 1199, le seigneur de Montbrun, Pierre Brun, dirigeait avec le chevalier Pierre Basile la garnison de Châlus lors du siège au cours duquel Richard Coeur de Lion trouve la mort. Au XIIe siècle, un château de pierre, dont subsiste le donjon de style roman, est construit. Ce château est incendié, et presque entièrement reconstruit, au XVe siècle. Saccagé et pillé.

Maquette - De la fin du IXe siècle au XIIIe siècle, le patronyme d'Aubusson est celui des vicomtes d'Aubusson, l'une des branches de la Maison de Limoges. Au XIIIe siècle, la vicomté d'Aubusson passe entre les mains de la Maison de Lusignan dont étaient issus les Comtes de la Marche. À partir du XVIe siècle, ce sont des membres de la famille royale qui porteront le titre de Comte de la Marche.

La fondation de la cité médiévale Bourganeuf, Burguet-Neuf, si elle date du 12ème siècle n'a pas des origines clairement définies. Cependant, la ville semble être fondée par l'ordre des chevaliers du Temple : Les Templiers au 12ème siècle puis par l'ordre des chevaliers de Saint Jean de Jérusalem : Les Hospitaliers au 14ème siècle.

Vers l'an 1000 première fortification par les vicomtes de Limoges d'un éperon rocheux dominant la Graine. Le château, dont le donjon date du XIIe siècle, et la majorité du bâtiment du XVe siècle, est situé au-dessus du confluent de la Graine et de la Vayres dans la commune de Rochechouart. Jusqu'en 1470, la châtellenie est le fief d’une branche cadette des vicomtes de Limoges. De l'ancienne forteresse il ne subsiste plus que le châtelet d'entrée à pont-levis dont une tour du XIIIème.

Le château a été édifié au XVe siècle. Il permettait de contrôler l'un des accès vers Ahun. Le château est classé Monument historique depuis 1946, il est actuellement habité par son propriétaire qui l'a acheté en 1982. Il est maintenant ouvert au public. C'est un château privé, comportant un corps de logis rectangulaire flanqué de hautes tours rondes aux angles de sa façade ouest et, sur la façade opposée, une tour d'escalier carrée.

Maison ducale des seigneurs de Ventadour

" Montaigut-le-Blanc, qui le voit n'est pas dedans ! " : le dicton propre au pays révèle la situation en point de mire du manoir féodal. Construit à l'emplacement d'une motte castrale culminant à 505 m d'altitude, le château austère s'impose. Au XIIIe siècle, le donjon est rond ; au XIVe il disparaît ou plutôt se fond avec le corps de logis en un grand bâtiment fortifié qui occupe l'un des côtés de l'enceinte "… " Le château du XVe siècle a gardé ce plan en augmentant sa hauteur.

Dominant la Creuse depuis la fin du Xe siècle, la place forte de Chantemille a très certainement été établie par des vassaux ou la famille de Boson II, comte de la Marche. Au XIIIe siècle Chantemille appartient à la famille de La Chapelle Taillefer qui transmet la seigneurie à la famille Le Fort des Ternes par le mariage de Marie de La Chapelle-Taillefer avec Godefroy Le Fort. En 1308, après la mort de Godefroy, ses trois fils se partagent les biens paternels et maternels.

Construit à partir du XIIe siècle, le château, aujourd'hui en ruines, est l'ancien siège des seigneurs, puis barons, de Lastours. Il conserve plusieurs tours d'angle et la base de son donjon, remaniée au XVIe siècle.

Ce donjon qui reste du château, appelé « La Tour », culmine à 418 m d'altitude et mesure 32 m de haut. Le donjon roman a été surmonté au XIVe siècle de mâchicoulis de type alternés. L'ancien donjon du XIIe siècle fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 1er mars 19452. Il fait partie des donjons carrés les mieux conservés. Il est de plan rectangulaire, 9 X 13 m, ce qui entraîne un système de contreforts différents en fonction des côtés.

En construisant Châlus-Chabrol, l'objectif des seigneurs de Limoges (vicomtes et évêques est de contrôler l'itinéraire de Limoges vers le Périgord. Ils détournent par Châlus la voie qui menait de Bourges à Bordeaux et passait alors par Lastours afin, justement, d'éviter les terres des puissants seigneurs de Lastours pour rejoindre leurs possessions en Dordogne, dont le château de Hautefort.

Le château de Bridiers est cité par le chroniqueur Geoffroy de Vigeois vers 1140. Le “Castrum” évoqueé alors n’est autre qu’une tour sur motte. En 1177, dans la lutte entre le Roi d'Angleterre Henri II et le Comte de la Manche Aldeberte IV de Montgommery, les troupes du Roi assiègent le château.

Le château de Bourganeuf a été édifié par les Hospitaliers de Saint Jean de Jérusalem vers 1150. La Tour Zizim a été construite entre 1484 et 1486 pour accueillir en résidence forcée le Prince Zizim. De forme ronde, elle présente sept étages voûtés. Les murs de la tour sont d’une épaisseur de 2,80 m. Un escalier en colimaçon conduit aux sept étages jusqu’au sommet de l'édifice coiffé d'une superbe charpente.

En 982, un « castrum de Axa » est attesté sur l'éperon rocheux dominant la confluence de l'Aixette et de la Vienne. Le fief relevait de l'abbaye de Solignac, mais avant le XIIIe siècle, le site devint une dépendance des vicomtes de Limoges. Un pont traversant la Vienne est construit par les vicomtes de Limoges sous les murailles du château-fort érigé au confluent des deux rivières. En 1183 une bataille eut lieu entre les routiers de Raymond Brun et l'armée de Richard Coeur de Lion.

Une place forte existait sans doute dès cette époque à Malval. Les ruines que l'on voit aujourd'hui sont celles du château de Malval du XIVe siècle. Selon Froissart, Du Guesclin y aurait séjourné en 1370. Il écrit en effet : "Si se bouta ès chateaux du signeur de Malval qui estoit tourné François". Froissart rapporte que Du Guesclin parcourait alors le Limousin avec "200 lances" et qu'il se barricadait le soir dans des forteresses, ne voulant pas faire reposer ses troupes en rase campagne.

When Oriental history meets Western culture

From the commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem founded in the 12th century was born the new town which quickly became Bourganeuf. The city owes part of its celebrity to the fact that it welcomed in 1486, a prestigious prisoner, the Ottoman sultan Djem, son of Muhammad II. Nicknamed Prince Zizim, he left his name to one of the towers, the emblematic patrimony element of the city!

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived Monday in Guinea on his latest visit to West Africa, where coups and growing discontent with traditional allies like France and the United States have contributed to some countries’ shift toward Moscow.

Lavrov has visited the African continent several times in the past couple of years as Russia seeks support — or at least neutrality — from many of its 54 countries amid Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov met with Guinea’s foreign minister Morissanda Kouyaté, according to Russia’s foreign ministry. Guinea’s government in a statement said the meeting was to discuss areas of mutual cooperation, without elaborating.

Lavrov was expected to arrive in the Republic of Congo late on Monday evening, where he was due to meet President Denis Sassou N’Guesso in the city of Oyo, according to an official communique from Brazzaville. It wasn’t clear which other countries were on his itinerary later this week.

Guinea has been ruled by a military junta since 2021. Col. Mamadi Doumbouya seized power saying he was preventing Guinea from slipping into chaos and accusing the previous government of broken promises. In February, military leaders dissolved the government without explanation, saying a new one will be appointed.

Doumbouya has rebuffed attempts by the West and other developed countries to intervene in Africa’s political challenges, saying Africans are “exhausted by the categorizations with which everyone wants to box us in.”

Several West African nations including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have had coups that installed military juntas. They have severed or scaled back long-standing military ties with Western powers in favor of security support from Russia.

Lavrov visited Mali early last year and pledged military support. Also last year, he visited South Africa — seen as the most significant of several African nations to take a neutral stance on the war in Ukraine — and returned there to attend a meeting of BRICS bloc nations. He also visited Kenya in an outreach in East Africa.

Lavrov late last year toured North Africa , where Russia also seeks to strengthen ties in the vacuum created by the diminishing popularity of Western powers.

In West Africa, the military junta governing Burkina Faso ousted French forces last year and turned to Russia for security support. And in Niger , Russian military trainers arrived weeks after the junta that took power last year ordered U.S. troops to withdraw from the country.
