7 or 10 Night Baja Vacation Cruise | Jan - Dec 2024 - 2025 | Two Adventures to Choose From. Sea Lions, Snorkeling, and Sun.

Steinbeck, Cousteau… now it’s your turn to explore the “world’s aquarium” on a Mexico cruise in the Sea of Cortes. Greet sea lions from the boat or skiff, or slip into a wetsuit for an even closer encounter. Getting your sea legs is easy too—relax with toes in the sand, on a hike, or atop a mule through the canyons of Baja. Land and sea are a step, or kayak, away. Whale watch from the boat, and visit grey whales and their babies during calving season or gentle whale sharks on your sailing. There are plenty of opportunities to spot your favorite whale throughout the season going farther north than other cruise lines or being captivated by the marine and sealife throughout the adventure through remote islands.

Complete with a mule ride and plenty of snorkeling with colorful marine life, experience the bounty that is Baja. Get into the wild with a mule ride accompanied by a local ranchero or a snorkel with the sea lions in a quiet cove.

Featured Ports on a Sea of Cortez Cruise

Learn more about the ports on your Mexico cruise to the Sea of Cortez.

  • Cabo San Lucas
  • Puerto Vallarta

Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters and sun-kissed beaches. As one of the world’s premier resort destinations, it’s the perfect place to relax, recharge and reawaken your passion for adventure. On a Mexico cruise, tour Todos Santos and enjoy lunch at the Hotel California. Or sail on a catamaran to Lover’s Beach, and snap a photo in front of El Arco on your way.

When it was founded in 1535, La Paz was a quiet bay with roaringly beautiful landscapes. Today the city is still home to sun-drenched beaches and mountains, but it’s also teeming with lively locals and endless activities. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, lounge on the golden shores. Or spend the day downtown shopping for artisan goods — like woven textiles and pottery — at the street side stalls.

While Loreto is known for its cliff-top vistas and sparkling beaches, there’s more to the city than just its scenery. On a Sea of Cortez cruise, visit the missions that give the city its rich history — like Mission San Javier and Mission of Our Lady of Loreto. Or snorkel through the 100-mile Loreto National Marine Park for a chance to see some of the 800 species of fish that swim through the waters.

Between its beaches, aquatic parks and vibrant art scene, Puerto Vallarta’s varied landscapes offer adventures for all. On a Mexico cruise, wander through the city’s galleries, and sample tequila alongside handmade tortillas and salsa. Or stroll along the seafront Malecon boardwalk – the city’s premier shopping destination — where mementos, margaritas and Mexican buffets await.

What to Do on a Baja California Cruise

On a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess, discover culture around every corner.

  • Natural Wonderlands

Inspired by 19th-century California mission-style architecture, Mexico’s cathedrals tell a unique story of times past. On a Sea of Cortez cruise to La Paz, visit the Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz. Admire the preserved stained-glass windows that decorate its exterior. Then step inside to see a collection of paintings and statues dedicated to Virgin Mary, the city’s patron saint.

Taste, see and meet true Mexican heritage on a Baja California cruise with Princess. In Loreto, stroll down the cobbled streets decorated with multi-colored homes, shops and museums. Sample Mexican seafood — like “chocolate” clams cooked over rocks — while sipping on spicy margaritas. Or meet the locals on a visit to the Main Plaza or during a traditional Mexican fiesta.

Natural wonderlands

From beaches to jungles, Mexico’s landscapes are untamed. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, see these terrains like never before. In Puerto Vallarta, take a boat to Las Caletas, a secluded oasis surrounded by sandy shores and forests. Hike through the island’s interior alongside a local guide, or zipline through the woods at the Kids Adventure Park. Then take a dip in the sea before your boat ride back to the city.

History is an important part of Mexico’s story. On a Baja California cruise, discover tales from ancient civilizations when you visit San Jose Del Cabo, just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas. Between the 18th-century architecture and the Spanish colonial character, let the preserved charm of this rural town transport you to Mexico’s past. Hear stories from locals, and learn city secrets from expert guides.

Sea of Cortez excursions

Our Sea of Cortez cruise excursions introduce you to the people and places that call Mexico home. Embark on an off-road adventure through the jungles of Puerto Vallarta, then enjoy lunch by a hidden lagoon. Kayak along Loreto’s coastline with your loved ones, and horseback ride along Cabo’s sandy shores. Or visit the El Serpentario Reptile Center and Cactus Nursey in La Paz and get up close to enclosed snakes, lizards and crocodiles.

More ashore

Enjoy every second in Cabo with More Ashore overnight stays. On any of our 10-day Baja California cruises, enjoy two days in Mexico’s resort city. Sip on a cocktail while watching the sun set over the ocean. Dance the night away in one of the bustling bars. Or taste Mexican street-food — including smoked fish, tacos and chicken tamales — alongside locals at any of the city’s restaurants.

Ships on this itinerary

Our Princess fleet includes ships that offer a multitude of amenities and feature the innovative MedallionClass® experience. From a balcony stateroom, take in the sights and sounds of the colorful cultures ashore before enjoying the “sabor” of local cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Sea of Cortez cruise.

#PrincessCruises Mexico Connections

See Mexico through our guests' eyes.

Mexico Cruises Onboard Experience

Experience the country’s unique character the second you step on the ship with traditional Mexican cuisine, events and activities.

Mariachi and margaritas

Sip, savor and sway to the music with onboard activities that give you a taste of Mexican tradition. Sample tequila while learning about the drink’s history from a local expert, and indulge your taste buds with tacos and fajitas. Or let loose with your loved ones during a mariachi performance, and dance to the lively tune of violins and guitars. On a cruise to Mexico with Princess, activities lie around every corner.

Every reason to celebrate

On select sailings in October and November, discover the region’s heritage with our Mexican Fiesta. Celebrate the Day of the Dead, a holiday to commemorate loved ones who have passed. From face-painting to Aztec flower-making, there are activities for the whole family on a cruise to Mexico. Learn a traditional dance, decorate marzipan skulls and make a skeleton out of pasta. Or watch dancers perform ‘The Procession of the Dead.’

Mexican and Spanish Cuisine

Famous for a reason

Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage and preservation of culinary technique, Mexican and Spanish cuisine is a big part of the region’s culture. Sample the bold flavors and creative combinations for yourself on a cruise to Mexico with Princess. In many of our dining rooms, enjoy Mexican-themed dishes — like ceviche, fajitas and coconut cocadas — for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Baja Small Ship Cruise: La Paz, Mexico

Experience abundant marine life such as whale sharks, gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more as you cruise the waters of the Sea of Cortez. You'll enjoy authentic cuisine while on your eight-day baja cruise.

Small Ship Baja Cruise: La Paz, Mexico

The sea of cortez.

Abundant wildlife, natural wonders, and warm clear waters make the Sea of Cortez one of the best ecotourism destinations. Dubbed “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau, these waters are home to over 900 species of fish and nearly 32 types of marine mammals that gather to mate and feed in the warm waters of this oceanic paradise. A  UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Sea of Cortez is the richest body of water on our entire planet, making it a must-see for anyone who loves the ocean.

Baja Cruise Overview

Experience a variety of marine life, including whale sharks, gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more as you cruise the waters of the Sea of Cortez. Knowledgeable guides share the rich cultural and natural history of the Baja region, and local ingredients are part of the cuisine. The smaller size of this ship gives you entrée into areas of Baja you would never experience on a bigger ship or by land. Fewer passengers on-board means that expeditions are made up of small groups and the crew can devote more attention to their guests. No hidden fees for excursions gives you the option to kayak, hike, snorkel, paddleboard, or hang out on-board and enjoy the view.

Day 3 – Bahía Agua Verde

At Bahía Agua Verde, clear waters are bordered by sparse craggy mountains hemmed in green. Explore the coast by small skiff before visiting with a local ranchero and his family. Finally take to the canyons and mountains on a mule ride and experience the “real Baja.” Scenic vistas, outstanding exploration, excellent birding, and unmatched camaraderie.

Day 4 – Captain’s Choice

While it’s unlikely you’ll find any black pearls, today you’ll sail amongst islands once explored by early conquistadors. Adventurous options available include kayaking, hiking, paddleboarding, or beach combing. Discover nature’s diversity and learn about the geologic forces that formed these islands.

Day 5 – Marine Life Search

Magdalena Bay (mid-January – early-March) Mother Nature is your guide today. Gray whales arrive each year on Baja’s west coast after migrating more than 12,000 miles to calve in Bahía Magdalena. Dock in Puerto Escondido, then drive across the peninsula to ride in a panga and observe these mammals and their babies in the lagoon. -OR- Bahía de la Paz (November – mid-January; March; the order of days will change) Whale sharks, the largest known species of fish, are known to frequent the bay. Keep watch for the watery “footprints” of these gentle giants. Conditions permitting, gear up for an unforgettable swim alongside this colossal creature or observe from above in the skiff.

Day 6 – Los Islotes / Isla Partida

At Los Islotes, a steep craggy seamount leaping straight from the sea, observe a sea lion colony from the boat and skiff. Slip into a wetsuit for an early morning snorkel with curious, agile young sea lion pups. Afterwards, heave anchor and set sail for Isla Partida, for an afternoon of water play or island hikes along desert beaches and` rocky arroyos.

Day 7 – Isla Espíritu Santo

Tuck into a secluded cove surrounded by long fingers of red rock and a golden beach. Spend your last full day enjoying the feel of warm sand under your feet on a beach walk. Investigate nooks and crannies in the rocks by kayak. Or explore a little further afield on a guided hike. Celebrate your week at tonight’s special Farewell Dinner with an entertaining slideshow.

Day 8 – La Paz / San José – Disembark

After breakfast, it’s “adios” La Paz, as you disembark the vessel and transfer back to San José del Cabo for your flight.

Sail with the World Leader in Small-Ship Expedition Cruising

  • Sail with a Top Naturalist Expedition Team Gain a deep understanding of the natural history of Baja California and the Sea of Cortez as you travel with a veteran expedition team that includes an Expedition Leader and five naturalists, plus an undersea specialist, a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor, and a wellness specialist. The ship's naturalists are experts in Baja marine biology, evolutionary biology, ornithology and more. The daily schedule is flexible, so you can choose activities with the naturalists whose interests mirror your own. With just 62 guests aboard this small ship, that's a ratio of approximately one guide for every 10 guests.
  • Gain Unmatched Access to Marine Life The Sea of Cortez holds the world's greatest marine biodiversity, and this voyage immerses you in it—literally! A full complement of exploratory tools (see #3 below) grants you varied vantage points, above and below the surface, on whales, dolphins, rays, sea lions, sea turtles, nesting birds and huge schools of fish. You won't find a trip that offers a more in-depth opportunity to explore a broad cross-section of this globally important body of water.
  • Explore via Excursion Craft & Specialized Equipment The ship’s fleet of motorized expedition landing craft and tandem and single sea kayaks facilitates intimate exploration. Watch whales rise, sea turtles glide and birds congregate on shore, all at eye-level. Full snorkel gear, including wetsuits, is at your disposal so you can swim with sea lions and reef fish. Observe the deeper underwater world via HD video shot by our undersea specialist who shares footage from each day's dives on the plasma screens in the ship's lounge. Listen to whale songs via hydrophone, and observe whales underwater in real time via a bow-mounted camera that sends a live feed to the onboard screens. And up your photography game with tips from a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor.
  • Be a Part of Citizen Science Witness research conducted on board by National Geographic-supported scientists. Watch the crew lower scientific instruments that measure oxygen levels in the Sea of Cortez, with the goal of revealing changes in an ecologically important zone.
  • Help Support Local Communities In 2004, Lindblad founded the Gulf of California Conservation Fund in partnership with the Mexican Nature Conservation Fund to raise funds for conservation projects. Lindblad’s contributions support a range of programs in Baja towns, from promoting lower-impact fishing to seabird research, marine conservation, sustainable tourism and social marketing for sustainable seafood.
  • A Flexible Itinerary Keeps You Closer to Wildlife Flexibility is a hallmark of a Lindblad expedition cruise, and a nimble small ship makes it possible. Expedition landing craft are dropped to get close to whales, and the captain will change course to keep the ship among a pod of dolphins. Hike through forests of cacti or cruise near shore for close-up photos of plunge-diving pelicans and blue-footed boobies. The movements of wildlife are what determine our course!
  • We’re Committed to the Planet Natural Habitat Adventures is a standard-setter in eco-conscious travel. We have been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007. And we continue to break innovative ground in adopting practices that help to protect our global environment. Because of our concern for the environment, we are pleased to partner with Lindblad Expeditions for our Adventure Cruises, a company that shares our values and commitment to the planet.

Our crew is made up of dedicated and well-qualified individuals. At least one member of the crew on each excursion is a trained and certified wilderness first responder.

The chefs aboard Westward and Catalyst are talented and creative, tirelessly and creatively preparing every gourmet meal from fresh, organic, locally-sourced ingredients.

Each small-ship cruise is accompanied by a Naturalist who is knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife and plants we encounter on our excursions, be it outings on foot or by kayak.

Our captain’s primary focus is to provide a safe, reliable, and marvelous trip for our wide range of guests. To operate a vessel at sea requires a great diversity of talents and skills. In addition to maritime expertise, our captains and crew members come from rich and various life experiences. They are here to share their world with you and to make our boat a comfortable home for your ocean adventure.

We offer multi-day small ship cruises in South East Alaska, the San Juan Islands (Salish Sea) and the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico.

Our focus is to provide you with a uniquely authentic experience that creates a lifetime of memories. Our itineraries are carefully crafted to showcase the very best of each region in which we operate.

We love being able to introduce our guests to places we have discovered over our years of exploration. On our classic vessels, MV Catalyst and MV Westward, we are able to provide the perfect conveyance for a return to the age of exploration.

Why should you choose us?

About our small ships

MV Westward was built in 1924 and is powered by the original Atlas Imperial diesel engine. She is listed with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Westward has four private cabins with en suite shower/toilet.

MV Catalyst was built in 1932 and was the University of Washington’s first oceanographic research vessel. Catalyst is powered by the original 6 cylinder 8×10 Washington Estep diesel engine. She has six cabins, four with en suite shower/toilet.

Both small ships feature warm interiors, with decades-old varnished wood paneling, heavy beamed ceilings, and glowing mahogany trim and furniture, that take us back to a time when craftsmanship was the rule rather than the exception.

Baja California

A Mexican peninsula extending into the Pacific Ocean from the south end of the U.S. state of California , it provides some of Mexicos most dramatic sea and landscapes. This includes everything from vast and remote deserts, dormant volcanoes and wonderful old mission towns. The first political capital of "old California" is found here as well as many remnants of the colonial past, (Alta California or Upper California roughly translates into the modern day US state and was settled later). Camping and hiking opportunities are plentiful, and much of the region is sparsely or even unpopulated.

The "Baja" is also home to world class surfing, sailing and deep sea fishing destinations.

The Baja peninsula is one of the longest in the world and offers an interesting mix of cultures with a wonderful combination of Latino, Hispanic, pre-Hispanic and even some Anglo influences. It varies greatly even from the Mexican "mainland" with its own lifestyle and identity within Mexico.

National Geographic Venture

National Geographic Venture

National Geographic Venture is the perfect ship to explore Baja California and beyond. She was purposefully designed and built for expedition travel and made entirely in the U.S. at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders.

Designed with over 50 years of expedition heritage, National Geographic Venture is able to explore the same remote locations Lindblad Expeditions has sought out for decades while setting a new standard in comfort and style. She features step-out balconies (available in 22 of the 50 spacious cabins), plus 6 sets of connecting cabins for families and groups; a Sun Deck bar, and a designated mudroom for expedition gear.

Equipped for comfort and active exploration

Comfortably accommodating 100 guests, National Geographic Venture has a shallow draft depth, allowing you to navigate the inner reaches and experience the intimate experiences Lindblad Expeditions is known for. Her twin expedition craft landing platforms allow you to rapidly get on and off the ship to take advantage of wildlife sightings and to ensure you maximize your time off the ship exploring. Designed with decades of expedition experience in the region, the purpose-built vessel also features open decks, generous windows, and specialty tools for exploration—the ideal platform for sailing into the fast-moving channels and shallow coves of Baja California.

Cabins & Suites

The luxury of comfort on expedition.

National Geographic Venture comfortably accommodates 100 guests in 50 outside-facing cabins. Cabins are efficiently designed, with sizes range from the 136-square-foot category 1 to the 185-square-foot category 5 suite. Twenty-two of the 50 cabins will feature small balconies with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that bring in the spectacular views and ample natural light. Twelve cabins will connect via internal doorway access allowing families to combine their rooms. Plus, all category 5 suite cabins can accommodate a third person on a convertible sofa bed.

Comfort & convenience in every room

Every cabin has two portholes, a large window or balcony, Wi-Fi access, and temperature controls. Bathrooms are modern and stocked with botanically inspired hair products, soap, and shower gel, plus a hairdryer. Every room has outlets and USB outlets for charging your camera gear or electronics, and space for luggage storage.

Food served aboard is fresh, local, and delicious, and sourced from suppliers who share our values of sustainable use whenever possible. Meals aboard are almost always served in the dining room, located aft of the lounge deck. When weather conditions allow, lighter fare may be served on the observation deck. There is no assigned seating and our dining room accommodates the entire expedition community in a single seating. During meals your expedition leader, naturalists, and any guest speakers aboard will join you.

Public spaces

National Geographic Venture was designed with 50 years of expedition heritage. The ship features a specially-designed, open bow and an observation deck for gathering to watch for wildlife or enjoy an evening cocktail with friends in the open air. An elevator access all decks, and public restrooms are available on every deck.

Visit the Bridge

You’re invited to the ship’s bridge to see the calm business of navigation unfold. Ask the watch officer Ventureions about navigation. Or, help yourself to the ever-ready binoculars to scan the horizon for whale spouts. There may occasionally be times when the bridge must be restricted to shipboard personnel only.

The lounge is the heart of our expedition community, where we hold cocktail hour and Recap each evening. It’s also where you’ll gather for presentations, photography talks, and guest speaker presentations. Seating design takes advantage of the wraparound windows for an optimal view, and boasts multiple high-definition screens for slideshows and videos. Forward lounge doors provide direct access to the bow. There’s also a small reference library and board games and cards are also available.

The bar is typically open from 11 a.m. until one hour after lunch begins and from 5 p.m. until closing. A variety of beverages are available for purchase including wine by the glass or bottle, cocktails, specialty drinks, and spirits. There is also a 24-hour self-service beverage station with coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer, water, ice, and snacks. The drinking age aboard the ship is 21.

The Sundeck

Morning stretch classes are held in the open air of the sundeck, located aft on the observation deck. After stretch class the deck is set with tables and chairs, and lounge chairs.

National Geographic Venture’s specially-designed bow observation area accommodates the entire expedition community at once for a shared wildlife viewing experience.

The Mud room

Located aft on the main deck where you will embark and disembark expedition landing craft, the mud room has lockers that provide convenient gear and boot storage.

Wellness aboard

Making daily discoveries and exploring the wild world is naturally uplifting. Add to that a variety of wellness treatments available aboard, as well as outings led by your wellness specialist, and you’ll find your expedition relaxing as well as revitalizing. Massages, body treatments, natural facial treatments, and hand and foot treatments are all available in the LEXspa. You will have the opportunity to sign up for a treatment once on board.

The Fitness Center

Conveniently located on the lounge deck, the fitness center is outfitted with two treadmills, exercise bikes, elliptical machines, exercise bands, and sets of small hand weights to use as well.

UnCruise Adventures: A Cruise Review |Exploring Off the Beaten Path in Hawaii with UnCruise: A Cruise Review

F or many, Hawaii is the ultimate bucket-list destination. The golden sand beaches, the adorable green sea turtles basking in the sun, the looming volcanos and of course the immense spirit of the islands. That said, actually planning a trip to Hawaii can be quite overwhelming. There are so many options on each of the islands, countless hotels, restaurants and activities to choose from that information overload comes on quickly.  And this my friends is the allure of going on a cruise in Hawaii.

That said, if you have been around here for a while you know I am not a traditional cruiser. But one cruise company that has always called out to me are the small ship sailings with Uncruise Adventures . Just the name alone is like a beacon signaling to me.  I’ve always been super independent minded and spirited which is how I travel as well. When I hear “uncruise” it says “Welcome independent minded, anti-cruiser, we have a home for you right here.”

Friends, this trip was nothing short of spectacular. Cruising with Uncruise Adventures opened up my eyes to how and why so many people have fallen in love with this company. Half of the people on our sailing were former Uncruise patrons who have sailed on their other trips, with several having even done the Hawaii trip previously. This is what Uncruise does. It lures you in and gives you a home, whether you are a long time fan of cruises or just wetting your appetite.

Read on to find out why Uncruise Hawaii needs to be your next adventure!

Who is Uncruise Adventures?

Uncruise Adventures is a small ship expedition cruise company specializing in immersive and adventurous travel in a variety of destinations, such as Hawaii, Alaska, Baja California and the Galapagos. Since 1996, Uncruise Adventures has provided access to remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

Uncruise focuses on offering trips with a deep sense of adventure, exploration and authentic cultural experiences, which is accomplished on ships with less than 100 passengers. Some of the things you can expect on an Uncruise Adventure include snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, wildlife viewing, and interacting with local communities.

We absolutely love that Uncruise Adventures is one of the few companies catering to travelers of all ages with unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences in popular tourist destinations.

Uncruise Big Island to Moloka’i Itinerary Summary

The Uncruise Hawaii itineraries either start on the Big Island and end in Moloka’i or do the reverse. For our trip, it was easiest for us to arrive to the Big Island and return from Moloka’i so that is the itinerary that we chose. Ideally you should arrive a full day before the departure of your boat. We weren’t able to, which worked out fine, but was a bit stressful to be honest!

Below is a rundown of our proposed itinerary and what we actually did. As this is an expedition cruise, things are weather dependent and sometimes, things get changed or removed from the itinerary so it is best to not get too set on anything in particular.

Day 1: Departure from the Big Island

Today we arrived to the Big Island where we were picked up at the airport and transported to the hotel where our group was meeting. We checked in to the Uncruise table, set our bags down and headed out to the beach for a quick lunch and snowcones. As it got closer to departure time, our bags were sent to the boat as we were escorted over to board. After boarding, seeing our room and getting settled, we had the mandatory safety briefing before sitting down for our first dinner on board.

Day 2: Big Island Hualalai Volcano Hike

Today we are still anchored close to the Big Island, but we ventured to a different destination than where we boarded yesterday. For our trip, the second day was New Year’s Eve and we opted for the volcano hike. This 3 mile hike was the perfect way to get out in the morning, stretch our legs and get some expansive views over the ocean and the volcanic rocks around the Big Island.

We were led onto private property by our guide with Hawaii Forest & Trail who knew the flora and fauna like the back of his hand. We were able to explore an old lava tube and see how the lava flows shaped this island.

For those that weren’t up for the adventurous hike, they were offered time to explore the Kona coastline seeking out sunbathing sea turtles.

Upon returning to our boat we were given a short amount of time to refresh and get ready for our next adventure – snorkeling!

Day 3: Kona Coast & Manta Ray Snorkel

Since there is no time for sleeping in, even on New Years Day, we headed out early for a 7:30 a.m. snorkel session. After swimming for a few hours with all of the amazing underwater wildlife, we headed back to the boat for a post snorkel brunch with delicious pastries and pizza on the top deck of the boat. It was such a wonderful way to welcome in the new year!

Since we didn’t have to be anywhere until dark, we spent the rest of the afternoon swimming off the back of the boat, SUPing and lazing around in the gorgeous sun.

Unfortunately due to a large earthquake in Japan, which sent tsunami warnings towards Hawaii, we were unable to do our much awaited manta ray snorkel in the evening. It was a great disappointment for all, but as we know on expedition cruises, you just never know what you will get. Instead our captain and crew decided to take everyone out for a sunset skiff ride. While it was no manta ray experience, it offered a wonderful time of bonding between all of the passengers.

Day 4: Captains’s Choice: Maui Coast

During the night, the captains ushered us across the wide open ocean to reach our next destination off of Maui. The plan for the day was a kayak/skiff ride on the coast as well as a snorkel session at Turtle Town. It was so wonderful to get out on the kayaks. We saw an endangered Hawaiian Monk seal on the shore, tons of fish through the clear waters and had time to really take in the famous Maui coastline.

Between our return and lunch we had time for more free swimming off the back of the boat along with the coolest experience ever. We were able to listen to whales communicate under the water with a hydrophone. If you have never heard whales underwater, you need to. It is so interesting!

And our last excursion for the day was a snorkel at Turtle Town. As you can see the day is full of water adventures and activities to really get you closer to nature.

As is common on expedition boats is our nightly post dinner discussion and lecture about what we have seen or a lesson on the wildlife. This was one of our favorite parts of every day!

Day 5: Captains’s Choice: Lanai Coast

Today we woke up to a beautiful sunrise and got ready for an early morning snorkel. We loved the abundance of diverse colorful fish in these cooler waters right on the rugged coast of the island.

This afternoon we were supposed to head on land for a variety of activity options including mountain biking, visiting a cat sanctuary and hiking. However due to a bit of rough weather we were not able to dock on the island. Instead our captain relocated us to another area where we were able to take an afternoon skiff ride around the island.

This is one of the most important parts of an expedition type cruise is to always be ready for adaptations based on the weather.

Day 5: En Route to Moloka’i

Today we woke up with another beautiful sunrise outside of our window as we prepared for a morning snorkel session with turtles! We hadn’t seen very many thus far in our journey, so everyone was very excited for this morning’s adventure. As soon as we hopped out of our skiff boats to snorkel someone had already spotted some majestic turtles.

After our amazing morning with some of Hawaii’s most beautiful wildlife, we spent the afternoon cruising the waters in route to Moloka’i looking for humpback whales, which we saw an amazing amount of, often right off the side of the boat!

Day 6: Moloka’i

Today was a special day for us on the boat as it was our first time in the new year that we were on land again! Since our previous landing was cancelled due to weather, we hadn’t been on land since our volcano hike.

As usual, we had a few options for our day activities while on land. One option was a guided hike to the Halawa Waterfall, or you could attend a cultural demonstration and discussion with a local family.

My son and I opted for the hike as we always do! It was a beautiful day hike, heading up the hills deeper into seclusion in the lush valley. When we arrived, we had the entire pool of water and waterfall to ourselves to swim and have our packed lunches. It was perfect and a wonderful way to end our trip in Hawaii.

Upon returning, we were able to visit a local sandy beach for a bit before heading back to the boat to freshen up for our last nights dinner. Our dinner was set in the Kualapuss Cultural center where locals played live music for us and served us an amazing array of local dishes for us to try.

These are the type of experiences that you would never get on a solo trip to Hawaii. The ending of our trip in this way was so special and really exemplified how unique and culturally conscious Uncruise Adventures trips are.

Day 7: Departure

Today we woke up early, had our last breakfast on the boat before disembarking around 9 a.m. Since we still had a good bit of time before our flights off the island, we were able to spend time at a local hotel around the pool or go for a tour in town before our airport transfer.

  • This itinerary offers a diverse and immersive experience, allowing travelers to explore some of the lesser-known gems of Hawaii, from the remote beaches of Lana’i to the cultural heritage of Moloka’i. With opportunities for snorkeling, hiking, and cultural enrichment, this journey provides a well-rounded exploration of the natural and cultural wonders of the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, the small expedition ship size and focus on sustainability ensure a personalized and eco-friendly travel experience. Overall, it’s a fantastic option for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and authentic cultural encounters in Hawaii.
  • Arrive in Hana, a picturesque town on the eastern coast of Maui known for its lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and rugged coastline. Explore the town’s cultural sites, go for a hike in the nearby Haleakalā National Park, or relax on one of Hana’s pristine beaches.
  • Explore Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped volcanic caldera located between the islands of Maui and Kaho’olawe. Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the crater and encounter an abundance of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks.

Safari Explorer Review

The Safari Explorer is a fantastic ship, or yacht as it is often called due to how small it is. The Safari Explorer has the capacity for 36 passengers, but on our sailing there were only 25, which was just perfect. That said, it would have been great with the maximum as well.

The ship has essentially 3 levels – the main level where you tend to embark and disembark for excursions. This level also has the lounge and dining area as well as a few of the suites.

On the next level up, there is the bow to view wildlife, a small back deck area and most of the accomodation for the ship laid out on either side of the boat. There are no balcony rooms here, but essentially these rooms open up to the walkway aka a balcony!

The final level is where the bridge is located, a few additional rooms, as well as the back sun deck which also has a small exercise area.

5 Affordable Cruise Vacations to Book — Plus How to Find the Best Deals

Here's what you need to know to save money on your next cruise.

Best Affordable Cruise Lines

How to find the best cruise deals, tips for saving money while on board.

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line

Cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. This form of travel is incredibly convenient (read: no need to pack and unpack), and everything you need can be found right on board — ultimately taking the stress out of trip planning. Plus, with hundreds of ships at sea across dozens of lines, there’s a cruise out here for every type of traveler. Fortunately, cruising doesn’t have to cost a small fortune, and many budget-conscious travelers may opt to set sail for their next trip. Below, we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines offering affordable fares coupled with value-packed inclusions to stretch your dollar further. We’ve also tapped some expert cruise specialists to share their top tips and tricks to help you save money both on and off the ship.

Here's everything you need to know to book an affordable cruise vacation.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

This adults-only cruise line from Richard Branson — which also happens to be a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner — offers excellent value. In fact, according to T+L A-list cruise advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder and president Rob Clabbers, Virgin Voyages fares “include more than on most mainstream large-ship cruise lines.” For example, he says, “Virgin fares include internet access, gratuities, all meals — there are no cover charges for its restaurants that on most other lines would be considered specialty restaurants.” Beverages like soft drinks, coffee, and tea are also included, as are snacks, mezze at the aft terrace, and group workout classes. Best of all, there are no pricey beverage packages. “Instead,” says Clabbers, cruisers — or, as Virgin calls them, sailors — can buy their own reasonably priced drinks (think: beers from $6, $10 cocktails, and wines by the glass under $11) a la carte. Additionally, with some promotions , the cruise line throws in a “ bar tab ” credit that can be used towards drinks.

Princess Cruises

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Another World’s Best Award winner — and WBA Hall of Fame Honoree, no less — this fan-favorite ocean line is renowned for refined ships, serene ambiance, and exceptional service. Moreover, per Clabbers, passengers can choose from “optional packages to help customize a passenger’s trip that provide savings over buying things separately.” For an extra $60 per day, consider Princess Plus, which offers perks like Wi-Fi for one device per guest, gratuities, fitness classes (two per sailing), and beverages like bottled water, specialty coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Alternatively, for $80 per day, passengers can spring on the Princess Premier package, which features the same beverages plus specialty dining (two per sailing), unlimited fitness classes, premium desserts, reserved theater seating, and Wi-Fi (four devices per guest).

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is a favorite among families of all ages for its over-the-top entertainment and activities (think: go-karting, Broadway-caliber productions, and so on). “While Norwegian Cruise Line may price slightly higher than some of its competitors, you need to consider the Free at Sea package,” says travel advisor Jennifer Travis of Marvelous Mouse Travels . She goes on to describe the promotion as a “game-changer when it comes to cruising” since it includes perks like a “free open bar (up to $1,400 in savings), free specialty dining (up to $180 in savings), free Wi-Fi (up to $200 in savings), and a $50 discount on excursions.” Other Free at Sea perks include 70 percent off second guests, free third and fourth guests (on select dates), and free airfare (per the cruise line’s website: “ Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock in roundtrip flights for two ”). Also, you can’t go wrong with the Free at Sea Plus package, which includes a wider selection of beverages, more specialty dining, unlimited Wi-Fi, and additional shore excursion credits. Before booking, be sure to check the line’s full selection of deals , which run the gamut from half-off deposits to $150 cruise credits and more.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

Zip lines, water slides, surfing simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls: Find all this and more aboard (most) Royal Caribbean ships — and, best of all, they’re complimentary! Ideal for fun- and adventure-loving travelers of all ages — read: kids and kids-at-heart alike — it’s pretty much impossible to be bored while cruising on this World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line . Additionally, according to Travis, Royal Caribbean “offers some of the best short itineraries,” some of which clock in at under $200 per person for two-night sailings. Longer itineraries, including a seven-night Bahamas sailing aboard one of the line’s newest ships, Odyssey of the Seas , clock in at under $600 per person. The line also offers an abundance of deals , including up to $600 off sailings, 60 percent off second guests, and more.

Carnival Cruise Line

Courtesy of Carnival Cruises

“ Carnival Cruise Line is known for its competitive pricing without cutting back on the onboard activities or various dining options, thus making them an attractive option to budget-conscious cruisers,” explains Travis. For example, many itineraries, including a four-night Bahamas cruise from Miami , clock in at just over $150 per person. Additionally, says the travel advisor, “Carnival sails to a wide variety of destinations from so many local ports that you almost do not need to fly to your cruise ship anymore, which is another huge savings given the cost (and stress) flights can add to any vacation.” Keep an eye out for frequent flash sales for even more savings.

Booking early is an easy way to save on your next cruise vacation . “Typically,” says Travis, “the best pricing on a cruise is when the schedule is first released.” And, while you could wait for a last-minute deal, “you may not get the room category that you want.” Similarly, Clabbers says that flexibility is key when it comes to finding — and scoring — the best cruise deals . For example, he previously told T+L that if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.”

Conversely, giving up some of that flexibility sometimes pays off. According to Clabbers, select cruise lines will offer lower fares to those who opt for a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one. Finally, you may also consider cruising in shoulder season or even low season. Sure, the weather won’t be perfect, but the fewer crowds and cheaper fares more than make up for that, especially if you’re on a budget.

While your tab can quickly rack up once on board, there are several savvy ways to save money. For one, consider bringing your own booze. According to Travis, “Many cruise lines allow their guests to bring a specific amount of alcohol or nonalcoholic beverages onboard the ships, which can help save you money while you are on the ship.” Additionally, Michele Benard , another travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, advises packing your own necessities from home — like Advil, Tums,  motion sickness medicine, and after-sun lotion — as opposed to buying them on board at a much higher price. You’ll also want to skip the souvenirs at the onboard gift shop, which tend to be more expensive than those you’d find in port.

Benard also recommends taking advantage of “all the free activities on the cruise ships,” which can include everything from water slides to trivia game shows. Pro tip: “Stay onboard during a port day, and the lines won’t be as long.” On a similar note, spa treatments tend to be less expensive on port days, so those craving some R&R — that is, sans breaking the bank — may consider booking a service during this time.

Finally, says Clabbers, save money on your next cruise by enlisting the help of an onboard cruise consultant to select your next sailing. “You will typically receive an onboard credit or savings on your next cruise, and your own travel advisor will be alerted so they can help you plan your vacation.”

Not far from the city lights, these islands are a world away; home to incredibly diverse and endemic flora and fauna. Spend the day kayaking, hiking one of the many trails, or simply relaxing ashore. Learn the fascinating prehistory of these islands from your naturalists.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Vineyards and culinary marvels await in one of the world’s hottest up-and-coming wine regions. See what the hype is all about while visiting a family-run vineyard for a private tour, tasting and lunch.

Explore Bahía de San Quintín and surrounding islands—home to 400+ species of plants, animals and birds, including 23 seabird species. The bay is located along the Pacific Flyway migration route and sees more than 25,000 birds pass through in the winter.

Explore El Vizcaino Biosphere reserve and its plentiful wildlife before sailing to Islas San Benito, home to thousands of breeding elephant seals. Next, visit Isla Natividad to learn of this community’s exemplary protection of the Vizcaino Biosphere. On a day at sea, search for a wide variety of marine life including the largest animal on Earth — the blue whale. Listen to naturalist talks and learn photography tips and tricks.

Isla Magdalena and the bay of the same name are irresistible treats for the nature lover. Come to know this island while hiking the ever-shifting, wind-sculpted dunes on a cross-island transit to Sand Dollar Beach. Watch for coyote tracks in the soft dunes and spot migratory shorebirds; many—including western sandpipers, whimbrels, willets, Wilson’s and black-bellied plovers and marbled godwits—are concluding their southbound journeys here. Observe astounding fauna, like the endemic and sideways-growing creeping devil, a columnar cactus thick with spines packed together to protect against herbivores and the relentless sun. This evening, as the ship exits the bay, be on the lookout for beaked dolphins and, with luck, a humpback whale.

Cruise past Friars Rocks and visit the historic town center of San Jóse del Cabo before cruising Gorda Banks seamount or La Fortuna, renowned gathering places for whales, dolphins and other marine life.
