For me, traveling is not laying on the beach sipping cocktails. Although that can sometimes be lots of fun and relaxing too.

For me traveling is all about seeking new adventures and making travel memories. And these adventures become even more fun when you can share them with a good friend.

We start this list with one of my favorite travel with friends quotes because lets be honest, what do you need more in life than a good friend and a great adventure?

Our adventures brought us already to all 7 continents. One of the most memorable adventures we experienced was our cruise to Antarctica.   This is a continent that cannot be compared with anything else. 

But we also have great memories of our travels to Japan , Korea , and Borneo.

Although we’re not keen on organized tours or any other form of mass tourism, except the occasional cruise to spoil ourselves, we are no hermits. 

We love to socialize and we always have a great time when we meet locals or other travelers during our trips.

The locals were very sociable in the Azores but in bigger cities, it is often not as easy to make a connection.

So when you plan to go on a trip with friends, make good arrangements in advance about what you expect from the trip.

Good agreements make good friends and it will avoid that you or your friend will be disappointed and the dream journey turns into a nightmare.

This is even psychologically proven. You’re more emotionally touched by the things you experience when a friend is going through the same experience.

I’m however reluctant to leave on a long trip without any friends. 

I think loneliness would start to creep in really fast.

This is especially true when you’re abroad in a country you don’t know with a language you don’t speak. 

We traveled independently through China and we must agree that we underestimated how challenging this would be.  We often were completely helpless.  There were no English-speaking ticket offices in the train stations and to our surprise we didn’t meet that many people who spoke English during our trip.  

But those people who spoke English really did anything they possibly could to help us.  They never took advantage of us, they never asked anything in return. 

They just seemed happy to help us.

They acted as an honest friend and that’s something I will never forget about our trip.

We were hiking and accompanied by a local tribe that didn’t speak English.

Suddenly one of our fellow hikers slipped out in the mud and she desperately tried not to fall. It was really funny to see how she alternately was gliding forward and backward.

This really shows how all people are the same and even when we come from completely different backgrounds, and we don’t speak the same language, we still have more in common than we think.

This event even broke the ice. 

Before this happened we had no contact with the local tribe but when we continued onward we were helping each other to cross the muddy parts and we tried to do some basic conversation.

I traveled with friends in my early 20s and again in my 40s. I love traveling with girlfriends at different life stages.

• My friends and I traveled together through Southeast Asia in our 20s.
• We just took another trip together, this time to Bhutan, nearly two decades later. 
• Though much has changed, our friendships are still strong. 

I walked around Singapore Changi Airport feeling like a kid at summer camp for the first time. It was my first trip away from my family in a decade.

"Will I be OK?" I wondered. "What if I feel homesick and want to go home to my children and husband?"

I sat down and checked my backpack for the 10th time to make sure my passport and wallet were still inside. Then, I took a deep breath and wondered why I felt so anxious.

An earlier version of me used to travel alone all the time when I was in my 20s, filled with a naïve optimism that everything would work out. Yet there I was, at 39, feeling completely out of my depth.

I connected to WiFi, and my phone lit up with a message. I felt a rush of relief as I remembered I wasn't alone on the other side of the world. Three of my college friends were heading to Bhutan with me.

They had just touched down from Brisbane and wanted to know where to meet up. "See you at the gate," I wrote, and started making my way through the terminal.

Suddenly, I heard my college bestie call out my name. "Millllllls," she yelled. It was like a scene from a bad romcom, as she came sprinting along the travelator and tackled me. We laughed and hugged, then made our way to the other women.

Three of us are moms who ditched our husbands at home with the kids . The fourth friend decided to join us literally a couple of weeks before the trip, much to our delight.

We've all had vastly different life experiences, but we share an enduring bond — the kind that's formed during those early foundational years and lasts the ages. We met at college and traveled through Cambodia and Vietnam together in our early 20s.

Over the next eight nights, we had the time of our lives in Bhutan. It had been almost 20 years since the four of us had traveled together, but somehow, we picked up right where we left off. Another friend also joined along the way, and she fit in perfectly with the group.

During the holiday, I had so many revelations. The main one was how much I love traveling with girlfriends at different life stages.

We laughed more than I thought possible

There were times when we laughed so much that we cried, starting with our layover in Kathmandu on the way to Bhutan. I had woken up to go to the toilet, and when I reappeared in our twin room, my friend thought I was an intruder. She let out a blood-curdling scream that shook the walls. "It's me, Carmen," I said, then we both collapsed in a fit of hysterics, laughing until our stomachs ached.

Another time, we talked about something serious in a restaurant when the only other patron let out an almighty belch. We all looked at each other, then keeled over with laughter.

But the funniest moment of all was when our somewhat conservative Bhutanese guide took us to a hot spring in Gasa and appeared in his very tight undies. Up until that point, he had been wearing his traditional robe, known as a gho.

We were all sitting in the hot springs nearby as he took a 10-minute shower, meticulously scrubbing every inch of his hair and body. My friend piped up something like, "Queue 'Mysterious Girl' by Peter Andre," and we all lost it. It was so immature, but all of us were enjoying ourselves.

We had the best conversations

Another thing I loved was our deep and varied conversations. Nothing had been off limits during our trip together around Southeast Asia , and the same was true during this trip.

We talked about old relationships and current ones; parenting and puberty; religion and life after death. We discussed the merits of early sex education and the importance of teaching our sons about consent.

Sometimes, we chatted about lighter topics like eyelash curlers and brands of face cream, but I enjoyed those conversations, too. Often, we told stories about our earlier trip together, and through shared experiences, we briefly re-lived our youth.

We embraced the comfortable silences

Part of what I found incredible was how easy and familiar it felt to travel with these friends despite such a long gap between holidays.

There were times when we would embrace the comfortable silences while hiking in the mountains, enjoying the silent companionship rather than filling the void with constant chatter.

The silences never felt awkward, but instead offered opportunities for thoughtfulness and reflection, leading to a deeper sense of connection between us.

We rallied together and enjoyed the sisterhood

There's nothing quite like the bond of female friendship , and I really felt the solidarity of sisterhood during our trip. When women come together, they empower one another to be stronger and offer a tremendous well of emotional support.

When one of my friends began her cycle earlier than anticipated on a remote hike, we all rallied together and pooled our sanitary pads to get her through.

When I had a moment of height-induced panic on a hike, my friends reassured me I would be OK and encouraged me to keep going.

When another friend ended up in tears because her daughter had received some bad news, we hugged her and tried to support her through it.

There were so many beautiful moments of connection like these that I will hold in my heart in years to come.

So, what's next for our traveling girl squad ? We all lead very busy lives, and most of us live in different areas of Australia and the world (our fifth friend is based in Hong Kong). It's hard to know when exactly we might have the opportunity to connect again for another overseas adventure.

However, one thing's for sure. The memories of our trip will sustain us until we meet again — and there will be a next time, even if it's another decade in the making.

China is the true power in Putin and Kim’s budding friendship

The welcome hug on the tarmac at 03:00, the honour guard of mounted soldiers, the huge portraits of Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin hanging side by side in the centre of Pyongyang – all of this was designed to worry the West.

Mr Putin’s first visit to Pyongyang since 2000 was a chance for Russia and North Korea to flaunt their friendship. And flaunt it they did, with Mr Kim declaring his “full support” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Seoul, Tokyo, Washington and Brussels will see great peril in those words and in the stage-managed meeting. But the fact is the two leaders feel they need each other - Mr Putin badly requires ammunition to keep the war going and North Korea needs money.

However, the real power in the region was not in Pyongyang – and nor did it want to be. Mr Putin and Mr Kim were bonding on China’s doorstep and so would have been wary of provoking Beijing, a vital source of both trade and clout for these two sanctioned regimes.

And even as Mr Putin hails his “firm friendship” with Mr Kim, he must know it has a limit. And that limit is Chinese President Xi Jinping.

A wary Beijing is watching

There are some signs Mr Xi disapproves of the burgeoning alliance between two of his allies.

Reports suggest Beijing urged President Putin not to visit Pyongyang straight after meeting President Xi in May. It seems Chinese officials did not like the optics of North Korea being included in that visit.

Mr Xi is already under considerable pressure from the US and Europe to cut support for Moscow and to stop selling it components that are fuelling its war in Ukraine.

And he cannot ignore these warnings. Just as the world needs the Chinese market, Beijing also needs foreign tourists and investment to fight off sluggish growth and retain its spot as the world’s second-largest economy.

It is now offering visa-free travel to visitors from parts of Europe as well as from Thailand and Australia. And its pandas are once again being dispatched to foreign zoos.

Perceptions matter to China’s ambitious leader, who wants to take on a bigger global role and challenge the US. He certainly does not want to become a pariah or face fresh pressure from the West. At the same time, he is still managing his relationship with Moscow.

While he has not condemned the invasion of Ukraine, he has so far failed to provide significant military assistance to Russia. And during the meeting in May, his cautious rhetoric was in contrast to Mr Putin’s florid compliments about Mr Xi.

So far, China has also provided political cover for Mr Kim’s efforts to advance his nuclear arsenal, repeatedly blocking US-led sanctions at the United Nations. But Mr Xi is no fan of an emboldened Kim Jong Un.

Pyongyang’s weapons tests have enabled Japan and South Korea to set aside their bitter history to ink a defence deal with the US. And when tensions rise, more US warships turn up in Pacific waters, triggering Mr Xi’s fears of an “East Asian Nato”.

Beijing’s disapproval may force Russia to reconsider selling more technology to the North Koreans. The possibility of that happening is also one of the US’ biggest concerns.

Andrei Lankov, the director of NK News, says he is sceptical: “I don’t expect Russia to provide North Korea with a large amount of military technology.”

He believes Russia “is not getting much and probably creating potential problems for the future” if it did so.

While North Korean artillery would be a shot in the arm for Mr Putin’s war effort, swapping missile tech for it would not exactly be a great deal.

And Mr Putin might realise it’s not worth irking China, which buys Russian oil and gas, and remains a crucial ally in a world that has isolated him.

Pyongyang needs China even more. It’s the only other country Mr Kim visits. Anywhere between a quarter to a half of North Korea’s oil comes from Russia, but at least 80% of its business is with China. One analyst described the China-North Korea relationship as an oil lamp that keeps burning.

In short: however much Mr Putin and Mr Kim try to appear as allies, their relationship with China is far more important than what they share.

China is too important to lose

Despite their avowed fight against the “imperialist West”, this is a wartime partnership. It may develop but, for now, it appears transactional, even as they upgrade their partnership to the level of “alliance”.

The impressive-sounding Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement between the two countries, announced at the meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Kim, is no guarantee that Pyongyang can keep supplying ammunition.

Mr Kim needs supplies for himself as he has a front of his own to maintain - the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) border with South Korea.

Analysts also believe Russia and North Korea use different operating systems, with the latter’s being low-quality and growing old.

More importantly, Russia and North Korea did not prioritise their relationship for decades. When he was friendly with the West, Mr Putin sanctioned Pyongyang twice and even joined the US, China, South Korea and Japan to persuade the North to give up its nuclear programme.

When Kim Jong Un ventured out for a whirlwind of diplomatic summits in 2019, he met Vladimir Putin only once. Back then Mr Kim’s wide smiles, hugs and handshakes were for the South Korean president Moon Jae-in. They met three times.

He exchanged “love letters” with then US President Donald Trump before their three meetings – a man he once called a “dotard” suddenly became “special”. He also held three summits with Mr Xi, the first international leader he ever met.

So Mr Putin is new to the party. And yet he has not turned on the charm, while Mr Kim has lined the streets with roses and red carpets.

The Russian leader’s column in the North Korean state newspaper highlighted shared interests to “resolutely oppose” Western ambitions to “hinder the establishment of a multi-polar world order based on a mutual respect for justice”.

But it was missing the flattery he heaped on Mr Xi, who he declared was as close as a “brother”, while praising a slowing Chinese economy for “developing in leaps and bounds”. He even said his family were learning Mandarin.

He certainly would not dare keep President Xi waiting for hours and arrive as late as he did in Pyongyang. They also don’t seem to have worked out who is the more important partner, judging by the awkward moment where they debated who should get in a car first .

With China, they are both supplicants. And without China, they and their regimes will struggle.

Donald Trump’s Mob Rule

This week, Breitbart interviewed the former Trump official Peter Navarro, one of many criminals in the ex-president’s orbit, from the Miami prison where he is serving four months for contempt of Congress. While life behind bars is difficult, Navarro boasted that his stint has been smoothed by his ties to Donald Trump, which make him something of a made man. The former president, said Navarro, is beloved not just by the guards but by the “vast majority” of inmates as well. “If I were a Bidenite, things would be a lot tougher here — and yes, they know exactly who I am and respect the fact that I stood up for a principle and didn’t bow to the government,” he said.

One of the more unsettling things about our politics right now is the Republican Party’s increasingly open embrace of lawlessness. Even as they proclaim Trump’s innocence, Trump and his allies revel in the frisson of criminality. At his rally in the Bronx last month, for example, Trump invited onto the stage two rappers, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, who are currently facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder and weapons possession. (They’ve pleaded not guilty.) During Trump’s recent criminal trial, his courtroom entourage included Chuck Zito, who helped found the New York chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang and spent six years in prison on drug conspiracy charges. (The Justice Department has linked his Hells Angels chapter to the Gambino crime family.) Trump, who has his own history of mafia ties, has repeatedly compared himself to Al Capone . MAGA merchants sell T-shirts — and, weirdly, hot sauce — showing Trump as either Vito or Michael Corleone from “The Godfather” movies, with the caption “The Donfather.”

Both liberals and anti-Trump conservatives have sometimes had trouble getting their heads around this phenomenon. Often the go-to move is to point out hypocrisy: so much for law and order! But the disturbing thing about the MAGA movement’s outlaw turn isn’t that it’s failing to live up to its own conservative values. It’s that it’s adopting a sinister set of new, or newly resurrected, ones.

A fascinating new book by John Ganz, “When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s,” offers a useful way to think about the value system undergirding MAGA’s romance with the mob. Ganz’s book excavates a prehistory of Trumpism in the angry, cynical period between the end of the Cold War and the full flush of the Clinton boom. You can see, in the rise of figures like David Duke, Ross Perot and Pat Buchanan, Trumpism in embryo. (The chapter on Duke, and the cultish loyalty he inspired, is particularly illuminating.) But the most revelatory section — some of which Ganz has adapted in a post for his Unpopular Front newsletter — involves the mystique around the mobster John Gotti and the Buchanan-style paleoconservatives who saw, in the mafia, an admirable patriarchal alternative to the technocratic liberalism they despised.

Both Murray Rothbard, a co-founder of the libertarian Cato Institute, and Sam Francis, a white nationalist who has become posthumously influential among MAGA elites, found in “The Godfather” novel and films a vision of a self-governing social order more admirable than our own.

Francis used the German terms “Gemeinschaft” and “Gesellschaft” to contrast the values of the Godfather with those of liberal modernity. Gemeinschaft, he wrote, describes a culture based on “kinship, blood relationship, feudal ties, social hierarchy, deference, honor, and friendship,” whereas Gesellschaft refers to a social world that is atomized, calculating and legalistic. “It is a principal thesis of ‘The Godfather’ that American society is a Gesellschaft at war with the Gemeinschaft inherent in the extended families of organized crime, and it is the claim of the novel and even more intensely of the films that the truly natural, legitimate, normal, and healthy type of society is that of the gangs,” wrote Francis in 1992.

There’s a similar dichotomy between Trump and his enemies: He represents charismatic personal authority as opposed to the bureaucratic dictates of the law. Under his rule, the Republican Party, long uneasy with modernity, has given itself over to Gemeinschaft. The Trump Organization was always run as a family business, and now that Trump has made his dilettante daughter-in-law vice chair of the Republican National Committee, the Republican Party is becoming one as well. To impose a similar regime of personal rule on the country at large, Trump has to destroy the already rickety legitimacy of the existing system. “As in Machiavelli’s thought, the Prince is not only above the law but the source of law and all social and political order, so in the Corleone universe, the Don is ‘responsible’ for his family, a responsibility that authorizes him to do virtually anything except violate the obligations of the family bond,” Francis wrote. That also seems to be how Trump sees himself, minus, of course, the family obligations. What’s frightening is how many Republicans see him the same way.

Societies fetishize Mafiosi to the degree that they lose faith in themselves. Writing about the ideology embedded in the classic crime films of the 1930s, the Marxist social critic Fredric Jameson noted that gangsters “were dramatized as psychopaths, sick loners striking out against a society essentially made up of wholesome people (the archetypal democratic ‘common man’ of New Deal populism).” When, in the 1970s, gangsters instead represented a fantasy of family cohesion, it was a response to a broader climate of social dissolution. It’s a sign that a culture is in the grip of a deep nihilism and despair when moblike figures become romantic heroes, or worse, presidents.

Leo Woodall stays grounded after ‘One Day,’ even as more hearts are fluttering

“I haven’t seen this one specifically,” Leo Woodall says as a sheepish smile — the one that has made a fair number of hearts flutter since Netflix dropped its adaptation of the angsty romantic drama “One Day,” in which he stars — stretches across his face.

Woodall is well aware there is a trove of TikTok videos that document viewers’ intensely emotional response to the series, which chronicles the 20-year torturous slow burn of unlikely friends Dex (Woodall) and Emma (Ambika Mod). His friends have passed some on, he says. But after pleasantries are exchanged at the start of this video call on a mid-May morning — with Woodall beaming in from London — I share my screen to guide him through a TikTok sampler of heartache that has been recorded.

He lets out an enthusiastic chuckle as he braces for impact.

There’s a young woman , draped in a green blanket, in various states of complete anguish. Another video is a close-up shot of a young woman wiping tears from her face while watching an early interaction between Dex and Emma with the caption: “Me 2 days later still crying watching edits.” The final video features a viewer who has just completed the series, camera turned to her face as she lies in utter despair against a pillow . One by one, Woodall lets out a guilty whimper or “Oh, noooo!” as he screens them.

“We could watch these all day,” Woodall says as the brief presentation nears its end.

In ‘One Day,’ a new Emma and Dexter bring angst and yearning (again and again)

“In the beginning, when the show came out, I was trying to keep up with some of the reactions to it,” he adds. “I was just very intrigued and anxious to know what people thought and how they were responding to it — if they responded to it at all. But there’s something cathartic and therapeutic about it. Everyone needs a good cry. We spend a lot of our time watching things, and you don’t always have a real, emotional reaction. And I think the show really succeeded in lancing its way into people’s hearts.”

It’s also helped the actor’s rising profile, taking him from a virtual unknown to an international heartthrob. After a key supporting turn in the sophomore season of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” playing the alleged “nephew” of a gay man trying to scam Jennifer Coolidge‘s wealthy character, the 27-year-old actor sent the internet into emotional freefall in February with the launch of the adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel. In the melancholic, angst-ridden friends-to-lovers tale — previously adapted for the big screen in 2011 with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess — Woodall’s Dexter is privileged and charismatic but emotionally tortured as the series chronicles his evolving friendship with his witty and stubborn BFF across two decades on the same day.

“There’s definitely a kind of projection that people put on you,” he says. “I myself have done it with actors that I’ve watched. It’s just a natural thing that you do. Being on the other end of it was kind of a strange feeling. You just can’t take it too seriously. You have to find it funny and just get on with your life a little bit. Giving it too much attention is not something I would want to do. It’s just a funny part of life now.”

Not that Woodall has had much time to make sense of the attention. Soon after “One Day” premiered, he took a breather from Instagram: “My followers were going up and up, and I was like, ‘Oh, cool.’ But then I was like, I’m going to put my phone away.” He also began production in Budapest, Hungary, on the Nazi drama “Nuremberg,” a film whose cast includes Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon and Rami Malek. With that now wrapped, he’s begun work on the fourth installment of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” opposite Renée Zellweger.

Although Woodall comes from a family of actors — his parents met at drama school and he is a descendant of silent film star Maxine Elliott — he hadn’t always dreamed of pursuing life as a performer. He thought maybe something sporty was in his cards. Then he discovered “Peaky Blinders” and “Skins,” and the curiosity kicked in.

“I just remember I was in a gap year, working in a bar, not doing anything of great worth for my future, and I guess I started just kind of thinking about it,” he says. “It was a few things: It was ‘Peaky Blinders,’ also ‘Skins.’ I watched the two seasons that Jack O’Connell was in. I remember seeing his character and being like, ‘Whoa, that’s fun. Whatever he’s doing, that’s cool.’ I started looking into how he got to where he was and his road to playing that character. And yeah, watching ‘Peaky Blinders’ and just felt like doing a Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) impression in the mirror. [ Laughs ] I had the hat, and I was like, ‘Screw it, no one is looking. I’ll just do it.’ It’s so embarrassing. I would start improvising in the world of ‘Peaky Blinders.’”

He graduated in 2019 from Arts Educational School, where he studied acting, before landing minor roles in such TV shows as “Vampire Academy” and “Citadel.” He was filming “The White Lotus” when he watched the film version of “One Day” as prep work for his audition: “I didn’t know how it was gonna end,” he says. “And I remember I was in my kitchen cooking something, and I turned my eyes away for a second and I look back and Emma had been hit. And I was like, ‘What the f—? How could you do us like that?!’”

It added to his intrigue of, as he describes it, “a love story that wasn’t really just a romantic story. It’s about these two people who grow up together, and also apart. It’s about their friendship more than it is about, ‘Are they gonna get together?’ I know that is a huge part of it, but you do just see a real friendship.” Then there’s the complexity of Dex’s journey.

“He’s unbelievably fragile and vulnerable,” he says. “I think there’s a perception of him — not just from the people within the world of the story but people who have now seen the show — that he’s got kind of a reputation and you learn as you go on that he’s very insecure, he’s lonely a lot of the time. He just wants to be connected to the people that he cares about. He gets in his own way a lot of the time. But truthfully, he’s just someone who has a big, big heart. And it gets broken more than once.”

Woodall humbly scoffs when asked what he’s learned about what goes into playing a leading man — “Oh, I still don’t know. Honestly, there’s so many things to figure out still. The very beginning of shooting, I didn’t exactly know which foot to put forward. Then I was like, ‘Just do your job and be nice.’” But he’s enthusiastic about this chapter in his story.

“It’s pretty sweet, pretty fun,” he says. “I’ve been away from home for a very long time, and that can have its effects on your happiness. So I’m back in London now, and I’m very happy to be back and see all my people and still work. I hope that I can keep it up. That’s the game of acting, you just never know. There is a momentum that exists.”
