Percy Jackson's Hero's Journey in The Lightning Thief

In this activity, activity overview, template and class instructions, more storyboard that activities, this activity is part of many teacher guides.

Related to both plot diagram and types of literary conflict, the ” Hero’s Journey ” is a recurring pattern of stages many heroes undergo over the course of their stories. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, writer, and lecturer, articulated this cycle after researching and reviewing numerous myths and stories from a variety of time periods and regions of the world. He found that they all share fundamental principles. This led to the Hero’s Journey , also known as the Monomyth.

Percy Jackson has his own Hero’s Journey, just like the great heroes of old. He is, after all, a demigod born of Poseidon. Have students work together to discover the important events that fit into each category. This activity may be very challenging, so consider breaking up the Hero’s Journey components among groups of students, or working together as a class to identify them. There are different interpretations, depending on whether you focus on Percy’s main quest or his entire journey in his new world.

Immediately following the season one finale of the Disney+ Original series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” fans can discover the magic behind the scenes in the original documentary special “A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”

The Details

Featuring the series’ breakout stars, acclaimed author Rick Riordan, and the creative team, the 50-minute documentary will give viewers an exclusive look at the production of one of television’s hottest new shows.

The documentary follows series stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri as they step into worlds fit for gods, battle unforgettable creatures, and perform legendary feats, all while staying grounded in real life.

It also shows how having Riordan more involved brings the series closer to the beloved books.

“A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson” is an Evolve Studios production, directed by Joel Edwards and executive produced by Edwards and Daniel Kiedis.

How to Watch

The epic eight-episode “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” which has garnered over 26 million views for its first episode*, will conclude its first season at 6pm PT/9pm ET on January 30, 2024, exclusively on Disney+.

“A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will be available on Disney+ to watch immediately after.

Based on the best-selling book series by author Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” follows 12-year old demi-god Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) who is just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers as the son of Poseidon (Toby Stephens) when the sky god Zeus (Lance Reddick) accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.

With help from his friends Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Others cast in recurring or guest roles, include Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Timm Sharp, Dior Goodjohn, Olivea Morton, and Charlie Bushnell, along with recent additions like Adam Copeland, Suzanne Cryer, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Duplass, and Timothy Omundson.

The Archetypes

A hero willingly sacrifices their needs for others. They are actively learning and doing, and undergo transformation. They are flawed beings that have universal qualities. 

A teacher or trainer who aids the hero by teaching and protecting them. The mentor motivates the hero to overcome their fears and also prepares them for the journey.

THRESHOLD GUARDIAN

A character who serves to keep the unworthy from entering. They cluster around thresholds, and can be overcome by being passed or made into an ally. These guardians serve to test the hero's character and commitment to the journey.

A character (or item) that issues challenges and announces coming change. Heralds serve to motivate the hero into action. 

This aspect represents the "dark side;" villains, antagonists, and enemies. These characters often do not think of themselves as villains and serve to challenge the hero. By being a worthy opponent they create conflict to bring out the hero's best. 

The embodiment of mischief, this character desires to create change. They serve to ground the hero by pointing out their follies and serve as comic relief. Tricksters are frequently a catalyst who causes healthy transformations. 

SHAPESHIFTER

A shifting or unstable character, often of the opposite sex. They mislead the hero and act as a catalyst of change by bringing in doubt and suspense.

The Steps Of A Hero's Journey

The ordinary world.

This is the original world of the hero, which "suffers from a symbolic deficiency." The hero is lacking something, or something is taken from him. 

THE CALL TO ADVENTURE

The hero is given a challenge, problem, or adventure. Often it appears as a blunder, or chance. This stage establishes the goal of the hero.

THE REFUSAL OF THE CALL

The (often) reluctant hero has to be set along the correct path. He must weigh the consequences and be excited by a stronger motivation to proceed further.

MEETING WITH THE MENTOR

The hero encounters a wise figure who prepares him for the journey. This figure (or item) gives advice, guidance, or an item, but cannot go with the hero. 

CROSSING THE THRESHOLD

The hero has committed to his task, and enters the special world. Often he is met by a threshold guardian. 

TESTS, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES

In the special world, the hero learns the new rules by meeting people and obtaining new information. There is often a "local watering hole" component. This is where the true characteristics of the hero are revealed. 

APPROACH TO THE INNERMOST CAVE

Now our hero, and often his allies, have come to the edge of the dangerous place where the "object of the quest" is hidden. This stage often is the land of the dead. 

THE SUPREME ORDEAL

The hero faces danger, often a life-or-death moment that is either physical or psychological. 

REWARD, OR SEIZING THE SWORD

After surviving, our hero takes possession of the object, typically a treasure, weapon, knowledge, token, or reconciliation. 

THE ROAD BACK

The hero must now deal with the consequences of their actions. They may be pursued by remaining forces. They now face the decision to return to the ordinary world. 

RESURRECTION

One final test is required for the purification and rebirth of the hero. Alternatively, it may be a miraculous transformation.

RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR

The triumphant hero returns to the ordinary world bearing the elixir. Common elixirs are treasure, love, freedom, wisdom, or knowledge. A defeated hero is doomed to repeat the lesson.

A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson and the Olympians , a documentary about the series that debuted December 19, premieres on Disney Plus January 30. The film runs for 50 minutes and “gives viewers an exclusive look at the production of one of television’s hottest new shows,” according to the network.

Joel Edwards directs, and executive produces with Daniel Kiedis.

Rick Riordan wrote the books that spawned the scripted series. Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri are in the show’s cast.

Created by Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has its season finale January 30. There are eight episodes. Disney Plus said the pilot episode garnered more than 26 million views.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians sees Percy, and pals Annabeth and Grover, travel across the country in an effort to restore order at Mount Olympus and save the world. Riordan told B+C : “The series is definitely true to the books tonally. There’s a mix of humor and seriousness that is so important to engage viewers with. The more serious something is, the more you need comic relief to balance it out.”

The Disney+ original documentary “A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will pull back the mist even further for mere mortal eyes.

Those clamoring for more after the Season 1 finale’s release on Tuesday, Jan. 30 will get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the first season of the Disney+ series. The documentary runs 50 minutes and further explores the magic and mythology of the show’s production. It includes perspective from breakout stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri, as well as book author Rick Riordan.

“This is a big story,” Riordan says in the middle of the trailer. “Dare I say, epic.”

The starring teen trio brought Riordan’s world of relatable Greek mythology to life in battles with legendary monsters, a journey across the United States and solving ancient riddles — all while still attending school.

Steinberg, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is executive produced by Steinberg and Dan Shotz alongside Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Monica Owusu-Breen, Anders Engström and Jet Wilkinson, as well as Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg for The Gotham Group. ​​Riordan wrote the first two episodes with Jon Steinberg while James Bobin directed them. The series is from Disney Branded Television and 20th Television.

“This has been quite an adventure,” Riordan’s voice says to close out the trailer clip.

The first two episodes of the young adult adventure series ranked fourth overall in the Nielsen Top 10 Streaming Charts for the week of Dec. 18-24 with 572 minutes viewed.
