Ullapool Charters Ltd

sea fishing trips ullapool

Our season starts in April

We offer a range of boat trips designed to show off the best of what life has to offer here on Scotland’s spectacular west coast.  Our focus is on sea-fishing trips with the opportunity to enjoy local marine wildlife spotting in our stunning scenery.

SEA ADVENTURES WITH A TWIST

We don’t just stop at fishing though and we’d be delighted to tailor bespoke sea adventures to suit your own interests and experience.  You might like to learn more about our very special history or catch, prepare and eat your own lunch or supper.  Talk to us and we can come up with a bespoke itinerary to suit your needs , be it for pleasure, education or work. We are happy to work in association with other activity providers in the area.

-:History At Sea:-

by pre arrangement

Archaeologist Cathy Dagg, who has been a crofter locally for the past thirty years, is on hand to share her vast knowledge of our rich and varied history. We can access sites of great historical interest including old Viking settlements, local crofting communities and stations that traded with the Caribbean and Africa.

-:Seaweed Special:-

by pre arrangement

Foraging for edible seaweeds and other shore side treats with Ailsa McLellan on Isle Martin.

MV Patricia

For many years, Patricia was the passenger ferry to Tanera Mòr, the largest of the Summer Isles. Held in great affection by the locals, she even featured on the island’s post office stamps!

Now fully upgraded, Patricia is a spacious, fully equipped 29 foot Versatility hull powered by a Ford engine.  She is licensed and insured to operate up to 20 miles from our home port of Ullapool and can accommodate up to 9 passengers.

Patricia is a displacement boat and does a steady 7 knots. Not fast but plenty of time to watch the beautiful environment we operate in.

She has a toilet for your comfort and has tea and coffee facilities on board.

We need a minimum of 4 clients to run boat trips but will be happy to try and team you up with other parties.

We operate within the Wester Ross Marine Protected Area, which came into force in March 2016. We have seen the fishing get better with more species returning to the area and bigger fish being caught. More dolphins and whales are seen each year. There is a debate as to wheather this is a reaction to sea temperatures rise or an increase in bait fish due to the lack of trawling. Either way it has improved the angling- the lowest impact way of catching fish for the table.

The fishing kicks off with pollock until the return of the mackerel, (the main bait fish), normally about mid June. Later on in the season you can expect to catch cod, ling, pouting, whiting, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, gurnard, mackerel and herring. We seem to add more species every year.

Patricia is available for boat trips from April to the end of October weather dependent.

FISHING IN ULLAPOOL

FISHING IN ULLAPOOL

ROD FISHING

Carved out by the glaciers of the last ice age, Loch Broom offers good protection from the open waters.

SEA ANGLING

You can Fish along Loch Broom Shore or off the Ullapool Pier watched by seals. Species likely to be caught include, pollack, haddock, mackerel and Skate. Just three miles north of Ullapool is Ardmair where you can hire small boats for sea fishing. Why not try boat fishing in the loch to catch, Coalfish, Cod, Mackerel, Plaice, Pollack, and Whiting.

ULLAPOOL RIVER

The River Ullapool flows to the West, is fed by Loch Achall this is a good river for sea trout, brown trout and salmon. Permits are required and available £15 (upper beat) and £5 (lower beat).

Ullapool has flourished. Its attractions now include sea-angling for whiting and skate, and game fishing for salmon and trout in the Ullapool River and the nearby lochs.

RICH HISTORY

In 1788 the British Fisheries Society founded a fishing station at Ullapool to take advantage of the herring fishing industry which had flourished in Loch Broom since the 16th century.

the Seaforth not only has great seafood but a great history too? the site on which the Seaforth now stands can be traced back to the original founding of the village. Ullapool was established in 1788 as a fishing village by the British fisheries society, and the first reference to this site appears on Mr MacLeod of Geanies’ plan of Ullapool in 1789 as a store of salt, nets and casks. the building was completed in that year at a cost of £100.

It remained largely as a store for the next 160 years as records show. In 1912 Kenneth Cameron was using it as a store/coalhouse and described as a block, stone and lime building, slated. A smithy was also operating out the back, in a shed of wood and corrugated iron. Attached also, was a salmon-boiling house, where the salmon was prepared before despatching south.

The Seaforth has been through several guises. Our position at the harbour entrance has had a major influence in its development and the result of this can also be seen on the harbour and surrounding area. We have spent time as a fish and coal store for the steamboats that used to sail from Ullapool, a chandlery supplying the boats and harbour, and a smokehouse.

In the 60s and 70s we were a pub and inn, and during the 80s the upstairs served as offices for the fish agents dealing with the East European “Klondyke” fishing fleet that anchored in Loch Broom.

sea fishing trips ullapool

Carved out by the glaciers of the last ice age, Loch Broom offers good protection from the open waters of the Minch. Combine this with a port authority which has the experience and skills to cater for a diverse range of traffic and you have a recipe for success. The harbour area covers 26 square miles, providing a safe, deep-water anchorage for large vessels of all types.

The harbour is manned day and night, every day of the year with trained and experienced harbour assistants on hand to assist as required.

The fishing industry has been at the heart of Ullapool for over 230 years and the village maintains its position as one of the ten major fishing ports in the UK. The modern pier has been upgraded and enlarged several times over its long history and can cater for vessels up to 140m LOA, 7m draught. In times past, herring boats from all over the UK would descend on Ullapool to plunder the Minch, with catches processed and salted on the quayside. The collapse of the herring stocks and subsequent closure of the fishery in 1978 resulted in a switch to hunting mackerel. The mackerel fishery of the 1980s and 90s was a gold rush era for Ullapool with up to 140 fishing boats and Klondykers working from Loch Broom.

These days Ullapool is primarily a white fish and shellfish harbour with Scottish and Spanish vessels making weekly landings. The Scottish white fish fleet targets the seasonal Rockall haddock and squid fisheries in the spring and summer, while monkfish is their primary target in the winter months. The Anglo-Spanish fleet working long lines, tends to fish in deeper water targeting high-quality hake and ling, while the freezer vessels target monkfish and deepwater crab. The shellfish fleet lands crab, lobsters and prawns daily/weekly with much of the catch being exported once the local eateries have secured their share.

The harbour has supported the fish farm industry for many years, initially with the transfer of feedstuffs and more recently with the transhipment of live salmon smolts from shore sites via purpose-built tank ships to west coast sea farms.

The continued success of this fishing port is in a large part due to the facilities the harbour has to offer. A large open pier is available for net mending and warp checking, along with fuel, fresh water, tube ice, crane, forklift and waste disposal services available 24/7. Ships’ stores, maintenance welding and agency facilities are all available with advance booking. Ullapool Harbour Trust is a participating harbour in the Fishing for Litter Scheme, enabling those who collect litter at sea to dump it in a dedicated harbour-side skip.

Road links to the east coast and continental markets are excellent with Scottish road haulage contractors offering very favourable rates for trucking fish from the harbour.

Ullapool Trout Fishing

Trout fishing at ullapool.

Ullapool, situated at the mouth of the Ullapool River on the shores of Loch Broom, is one the the main fishing ports and tourist centres of Wester Ross, with ferry links to the Scottish Islands. The village makes an ideal centre for the trout fisherman, with many small lochs to be explored in the hills to the north, west and south.

Ullapool Trout Fishing

Lochs in the vicinity include Loch Beinn Deirg, Loch na Maoile, Loch Bad na h-Achlaise, Loch Ob an Lochan, Loch Achall, Loch Choire Bhuig, Loch an Eiean, Clar Lochan, Loch na Daimh, Loch Lagaidh, Loch Allt Eigin, Loch Loire Chaorachain and Loch a Chairn Mor.

Ullapool Trout Fishing Map

The maps on this website, extracts from the “Half Inch” Bartholomew map series of the mid twentieth century, have been reproduced with the permission of Collins Bartholomew .  Viewers should note that these maps date back several decades, to the mid twentieth century in fact. While much of the man-made details such as roads and buildings will have changed over the years, the character of the hills, lochs and rivers, and the trout inhabiting them, will have remained very much the same as they have always been, in the more remote regions at any rate! This website shows detailed maps of the major fishing locations. In addition, however, I would recommend that anglers planning a Scottish fishing or walking trip should be sure to equip themselves with a compass, the appropriate local Ordnance Survey map and a working knowledge of how to use them. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Ullapool, see O.S. map number 20.

It’s a popular haunt for hill walkers as the area close by is largely mountainous with some inspiring views. The town is also at the mouth of the river Ullapool with sizeable stocks of sea trout and salmon. In a season, the river can yield between 60 and 70 salmon, and although you will need a permit, the best source is near Moss Bridge on its lower reaches.

Ullapool,_from_the_Ullapool_Hill_Walk_

Take a short trip north from Ullapool and you’ll find Assynt and its famous – and countless – limestone lochs. This part of the Highlands is magical with stunning scenery and plenty of choice areas for landing that prized catch. Salmon and trout, some weighing up to six pounds are often caught, but be prepared, these guys don’t give up easily.

The biggest loch in the region is Loch Assynt – six miles long and more than 260 feet deep. It’s also known to get quite blustery, but as its shore and bays yield the best catches, a windy day shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Although fishing on the loch is not permitted on a Sunday, the remainder of the week should be sufficient as both salmon and sea trout are plentiful. The smallest, and possibly the most scenic, is Loch Awe. If you like the idea of combining your fly fishing trip with some island hopping, this loch is ideal. Despite its size – just one mile long – yields are good.

Another large loch in this scattered group is Veyatie. It’s four miles in length and steep-sided. The distinctive peaks of Cul Mor and Suilven are an awesome sight. Head for the north shore if you want the best results. Brown trout of varying sizes are quite common if you can take your eyes off the spectacular scenery.

Fly fishing and scenery aside, Ullapool has no shortage of accommodation. The Blacksmith’s Cottage is close to all the town’s attractions and offers B&B or self catering. Its quaint and traditional white wash and warm welcome makes the cottage, like Ullapool, an ideal spot for a short family break. For booking details call 01854-613-049.

A Guide To Fly Fishing Along the NC500

A guide to poolewe, gairloch & ullapool region.

So much has been written about fly fishing in Scotland, particularly in the Highlands. A small blog can’t do any of this justice but hopefully can impart some of the basics we have learnt over the years so that you can make the most of a weeks getaway along the North Coast 500 and easy access to some brilliant wild fishing.

We are focusing on day ticket water, not prime fishing spots booked out years in advance, but little gems that time poor fly fishers can get access too easily on affordable day permits.  We can’t even scratch the surface, so have picked our favorites in each region based on easy permission, scenery, fishing and wilderness.

All waters have been fished by us or our friends recently, but permits and permissions change so do double check before you head out to explore! We have deliberately excluded the famous Scottish salmon rivers that you can’t get access to as a visitor as there is no point teasing you; an hour or two on the Spey is not going to happen but we hope to show you the gems where you may well hook something special for a tenner one afternoon.

At Highland Overland we love the wild, these are mainly wild fish lochs where you pit yourself against nature.  We encourage catch and release and conversation of what is a wonderful sport, we custodians of these treasures for our children. Remember the basic rules of enjoying the wild, take litter home, respect the area, take only photos and leave only footprints.

A 3, 4 or 5wt rod is all you’ll ever need for the fiery trout of a highland loch and if you can’t bring yours, get in touch – we can arrange everything you need for a weeks fishing along the North Coast 500. We also have some great partners specialising in guided fishing in the highlands, so grab your friends, book one of our trucks and enjoy some time by the water this summer.

Get in touch, we’d love to help.

Poolewe Region

Famous among fisherman for the river Ewe and the fabulous trout of the Fionn loch – both not readily accessible for the passing visitor ( though try your luck, why not!).

There is however a wonderful collection of hill lochs around  Cove and Inverasdale  that contain wonderful, fiesty wild brownies and reportedly some sea trout in  Loch Squod  – though this never produced much for us!

Flies, who am I to comment; buy Bruce Sandisons epic guide, link above and heed his advice well. The usual team of wetflies, blue zulu, black pennells, black zulus all seemed to do well. Perhaps a PTN for the deeper lochs, maybe a gold head daddy and with a bit of luck the odd small dry, we found smaller the better – perhaps even darker the better.

Permits from Gairloch Petrol station or Poolewe Post office.

Gairloch Region

Arguably the home of the hill loch; Gariloch and district is a gold mine.

A good starting point is   Loch Tollie (Tollaidh) A great, easy access loch from the road. Drive your car right down to the boat ramp and wonder amongst the heather on the far shore.  Those in the know suggest Soldier Plamer, Peter Ross, Black Pennel and Greenwalls spider. P ermits from Gairloch Petrol station.

For those with more time on their hands get onto the Ga riloch Hill lochs , a collection of wonderful little lochs with everything from buttery, golden ten-a-pennys to the occasional glass caser.  Permits from  Gairloch post office  and various shops in the area.

A brilliant fishing hotel is the  Shieldaig Lodge Hotel,  which has the fishing on the  famous Fairy lochs  – endowed with spooky remnents of a US air force bomber!  Permits and post fishing dram (beware drink driving rules in Scotland!) available from the Sheildaig hotel.  Some of the Gairloch hill lochs and the Sheildag hotel run lochs are a hike up the hills but well worth it for the spectacular views.

Loch Maree  is of course famous in yester year, the heydey of Victorian sea trout fishing. Permits for some beats are available from the  Loch Maree hotel , but worth a call in advance. We have hooked some wonderful little brownies and finnick in here, as well as the odd grilse and sadly, the ever so rare sea trout that this once world famous loch got its fame from.

Side note: sea fishing charters from Gariloch are well worth doing. They can be really pricey for one or two people as the charter organisations need to cover boat costs – however, team up with another family, friends or join an existing boat going out and you’re in for a brilliant day. We did it on a day when the weather was so bad we couldn’t leave the harbour but managed a huge haul of mackerel, pollock and various. For the sea fishing novice like us, this was a perfect little intro.

sea fishing trips ullapool

A little further up the coast from Gairloch you open up a lifetime of fishing, rumors, hidden beaches and wilderness. It’s the top of the list for us in terms of beauty and wilderness.

Permits for the glorious  Aultbea Estates lochs  are available from the  Laide Post Office  – covering a vast array of lochs across the peninsula. Some are pretty accessible from the road on foot, some are across a lengthy estate track an very mountain bikeable paths, but as always the best fishing is to be had by those with the will to get out there, go exploring and get hiking.

Side note: there are two amazing beaches up here that are a great distraction and keep the family occupied whilst you head off with a fly rod. The white sands of Mellon Udrigle are Caribbean esque until you dip your toe in the water and the hidden beach at Slaggan bay is a private gem, surrounded by lochs and lochans on the Aultbea estates permit.

The town itself is close to many a famous salmon river, the Gruinard, the Dundonnell, the Broom, the Kainard (pronounced like the French duck) to name a few but the visiting angler has to be very lucky to gain access for the odd afternoon. There are however a smattering of wonderful lochs which can be great fun and in which the ethereal Scottish Salmon can be touched.

Loch Achall  is a good start, buy your permits from the  Loch Broom  hardware store. Park at the bottom by the quarry and take the hike up the smooth track. Tired legs will be rewarded by baskets of free rising small trout, the occasional salmon near the river mouth (but please respect the rules on the permit re fishing methods, catch and release and target species) and the odd glass case trout for the lucky few.

The Dam lochs  above Ullapool are well worth a fish and can be very rewarding day by the water, though these ones can be very dour. Reportedly they hold the odd rainbow, again – best point for starting off fishing around Ullapool is a chat with the wonderful people in the Loch Broom hardware store.  There isn’t anything you can think of that you cant buy in that shop! A great place to stock up your Navara for the journey into Assynt.

Additional Reading

Another great book to check out is Rivers and Lochs of Scotland; “Rivers and Lochs of Scotland: Bruce Sandison”

A really useful little book is “Fishing in the Gariloch area by Harry Davis, Les Lamb & Stan Frost”

We’ll be adding more blogs on fly fishing around the North Coast 500. Next time… Assynt, the home of fly fishing. Sea trout, salmon and salt water fly fishing await in blissful serenity.

Loch Broom, Ullapool

  • Add to quote

Woke up to a nice day here in Inverness, so decided to head west to Rhu Lighthouse, just north of Ullapool. Been there before and blanked. On the way up realised I had forgot my landing net it wasn't needed as there was nothing doing either spinning or bait fishing. This is now my least favourite spot although the run was nice

sea fishing trips ullapool

Fished there a fair few times and Know the feeling well mate. But thing is about that place is that it just looks such a fishy mark and that it could throw up Pollack of any size. Was there for a whole hour last year ,we had drove up from Inverness where we were having a mini break ,wife and son went shopping in ullapool and I headed to light house Had about 20 casts and caught 2 plankton size Pollack when wife called to come get her and son , as she had got in argument With shop owner about fxxx knows?? And he been asked to leave hardware store and that's about the only place there So wanted to get out of town Hundred miles round trip for 20 casts And according to her we are not going to Ullapool again pity as I really like that place, methinks a solo camping trip is coming up

Going back in a few weeks but this time no fishing.Motorbikes and beer

yes we had the same experience, great place but the fishing was awful . 2 days fishing for no bites.

sea fishing trips ullapool

The piers meant to be good for lrf species. Haven't tried it first hand but sure it was in a mag a while back

sea fishing trips ullapool

Rhu Point. I know the feeling. Fished three consecutive tides there a couple of weeks ago without a single touch. On the other hand, I fished two tides there last year and had 64 fish, coalies, codling and pollock. That's fishing for you.

sea fishing trips ullapool

Many moons ago, just of Rue, the fishing for Coalie and Pollock was brilliant, plenty of doubles but that was 40 odd years ago..just goes to show

sea fishing trips ullapool

The harbour is great for lrf in the summer you can catch small coalies pollock poor cod and micro cod using various tactics and in the height of summer they will take a bare hook. You can also get flatties and gurnards on the bottom. Rhue in my humble opinion seems to only fish well summer to autumn ive had ballan rockcook and corkwing wrasse (goldsinney are there just not hooked one) and had decent pollock coalie and cod on lrf, spinning and float gear. Fishing the bottom at rhue it's mainly doggies with the odd ray.

Just had another fruitless session at Rhu. Fished the evening tide with softs and metals, not a touch. A guy pulled up next to me when I arrived at the parking place, as I got my fishing gear out of the van he was getting his snorkelling gear out. I asked him if he had dived here before, he said he had, frequently. I asked if he saw much. His response didn't really surprise me. He said in the past he would sea plenty of fish of all kinds, but now the occasional tiddler. I saw him when he was leaving and asked again if he had seen any thing, his answer, "two seals, not much else." Strangely enough, while walking along the beach I met another young man who actually lived just above the lighthouse. He asked me if I had had any luck. During conversation it transpired that he was a scallop diver and had dived all around Rhu Point, not specifically for scallops at Rhu, but he echoed what the other chap said, in the past plenty of fish, but now very few.

sea fishing trips ullapool

That explains why i had 4 out of 5 blank trips there last year. :Oo:

Why would be a question. Fish pen drug treatments affecting water all along the coast? Changes to currents? Natural cycles?

sea fishing trips ullapool

Possibly been fished out. Pollack and Wrasse are quite territorial if they have been caught and moved on or died, even though they might of been released, or the bigger Pollack taken for eating etc then nothing is around to make baby fish. I've never fished it but it seems it was/is a popular spot so that would be my guess.

sea fishing trips ullapool

Too early for Rhue , try again July / August
