Itinerary Details

Day 1: arrive in tokyo, japan.

Welcome to Japan! On arrival in Tokyo, you’ll be met and transferred by private vehicle to your luxurious accommodations.

Depending on your flight’s scheduled arrival time we typically recommend keeping your first evening free, both in case of unexpected flight delays, and also to account for possible fatigue from the long journey.

Settle in, adjust to your exciting new surroundings, and get ready for your adventure ahead!

Your Tokyo hotel :  Palace Hotel Tokyo  or  Aman Tokyo

Day 2: Modern Tokyo Highlights & Evening Sake Tasting

Ohayou gozaimasu  (good morning)!

Today is your first full day to begin taking in the Tokyo metropolis. You’ll begin with an immersive half-day tour introducing you to the city, and end with a fun and fascinating sake tasting.

After a delicious breakfast at your luxurious hotel, you’ll be met by your insightful private guide. While Tokyo can certainly be enjoyed without a guide, exploring with a fun and knowledgeable expert by your side will dramatically enhance your experience.

At Boutique Japan, we have exceedingly high standards when it comes to private guides, and carefully design each private tour to cater to your unique priorities and interests.

Tokyo is one of the world’s liveliest cities, full of amazing restaurants, beautiful gardens, stunning modern architecture, charming backstreets, and a glittering neon-filled cityscape. Beyond the city lights and crowds, Tokyo is also full of quiet neighborhoods where you’ll find locals going about their daily lives, and countless hidden gems in the form of unsung yet wonderful little shops and restaurants.

Explore notable districts such as (for example) Omotesando, Aoyama, Ginza, Daikanyama, and Shinjuku; along with one or more peaceful museums, shrines, or gardens such as the Nezu Museum, Meiji Jingu Shrine, and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (explore more of our favorite  Tokyo neighborhoods ).

Following your private tour, you’ll have some time to relax at your beautiful hotel and recover from any remaining jet lag you may have, or continue exploring independently. For your free time, you’ll be able to take advantage of the pre-departure materials we provide to each of our travelers.

This evening you’ll drink and dine with a Tokyo-based sake expert, who will immerse you in the fascinating world of  sake ( nihonshu  in Japanese) . Your guide will take you to a small, authentic restaurant specializing in cuisine that pairs perfectly with sake. As you enjoy a selection of small plates, you’ll be guided through a tasting of some of the best and most unique sake in the country.

If  Japanese whisky  is more your thing, we can arrange a private tour of incredible Tokyo whisky bars instead.

Day 3: Sushi-Making Master Class & Old Tokyo Stroll

Begin the day with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn how to make sushi from a true expert. Your private teacher this morning is a master sushi chef who will give you an introduction to the basics of making traditional Edo-style (Tokyo-style) sushi.

As part of this behind-the-scenes experience, you’ll spend an unforgettable morning at your chef’s authentic  sushi-ya  (sushi shop), working with wonderful ingredients. Along with everything you’ll learn, your morning concludes with a beautiful sushi lunch prepared by you and your chef.

Find more culinary inspiration at  Tokyo’s best sushi restaurants .

After some time at leisure, this afternoon you’ll venture to the historic  shitamachi  districts of Tokyo.

Begin in Yanaka, one of Tokyo’s most well-preserved historical districts, and an up-and-coming area for young creatives. It was largely spared during World War II, and today is home to quaint streets, small temples and shrines, and a plethora of traditional shops selling Japanese sweets, rice crackers, paper, and other goods. Yanaka is also home to galleries, such as the renowned SCAI the Bathhouse.

From Yanaka, walk to nearby Ueno, a bustling yet old-fashioned district best known for Ueno Park, which is home to various museums including the excellent Tokyo National Museum. You’ll come upon Ameyoko-cho, a boisterous outdoor marketplace where you can find everything from groceries and clothing shops to open-air yakitori stalls and more.

End with an early evening stroll through the backstreets of Asakusa, Tokyo’s best-known historical district. After taking in Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest and most famous temple, wander with your expert guide into the area’s off-the-beaten-path side streets, which remain full of atmosphere and hidden gems.

Day 4: Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Hiroshima & Private Peace Memorial Park & Museum Tour

Enjoy a final morning free in Tokyo with the chance to visit  Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market  if you wish. While the wholesale section of the fish market moved to Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji’s lively outer market remains an incredible place to immerse yourself in Japanese cuisine.

When it’s time to depart, you’ll be picked up at your hotel for your private transfer to Tokyo Station. Before leading you to your train, your guide will help you find beautiful bento box lunches to enjoy on the journey (major train stations in Japan offer an astounding variety of delicious seasonal bentos).

Then you’ll be escorted right to your departure platform for your first experience on  Japan’s remarkable trains . Today you’ll be speeding west through central Japan via Japan’s iconic  shinkansen  (bullet train), a wonderfully pleasant way to travel. For all long-distance trains during your trip, you’ll be in the first class “Green Car.”

On arrival in Hiroshima, you’ll be met by your expert local guide.

Hiroshima is most famous as the site of one of two atomic bombs dropped on Japan by the USA at the end of the Second World War. The Peace Memorial Park, in the very heart of the city, is the best place to learn about Hiroshima’s devastating yet inspiring story. A short walk across the lovely park from the sobering sight of the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome, you’ll come to the excellent and informative Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

After reliving the horrors of 1945 you’ll see that Hiroshima’s present is much brighter. Despite its tragic past, Hiroshima today is a lively and appealing city, with  wonderful food  and friendly, outgoing people.

While in Hiroshima, you can choose to stay in the city of Hiroshima itself, or in the neighboring island of Miyajima.

Your Hiroshima hotel or Miyajima ryokan :  Sheraton Grand Hiroshima  or  Kurayado Iroha

Day 5: Private Tour of Miyajima Island

Today you’ll have the chance to explore the scenic Miyajima Island, easily accessible from Hiroshima by ferry, tram, and train.

Miyajima is best known for its iconic Itsukushima Shrine, a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  that appears to be floating in the sea at high tide. At low tide, you can walk right up to the imposing torii gate for a fascinating up-close perspective.

Along with the impressive and photogenic shrine, Miyajima has plenty to offer, including the beautiful Daisho-in Temple, and Mount Misen with its various hiking trails. The quaint central lanes of Miyajima are lined with old-fashioned shops and stalls selling souvenirs and local specialties including oysters (best in  winter ) and sake.

Enjoy an evening at leisure and dinner at one of Hiroshima’s many  lively izakayas .

Day 6: Visit Naoshima, Japan’s Renowned Art Island

Today you’ll travel to the art island, Naoshima, a must-visit destination for art and architecture lovers. The island offers a truly beguiling combination of beautiful natural scenery, charming fishing villages, and cutting-edge modern art and architecture that blend into the coastal landscape.

The journey to Naoshima is rather easy, with a smooth ride on the shinkansen, an effortless private transfer to the tiny Uno Port, and a short ferry across to the island. As a guest of the one-of-a-kind Benesse House, which doubles as a hotel and museum, you’ll have access to the convenient hotel shuttle making the rounds of the island’s various art sites.

Enjoy the full afternoon taking in the island’s museums, galleries, and installations. Among Naoshima’s many highlights are the stunning Chichu Art Museum, the Art House Project, the Lee Ufan Museum, and Benesse House itself (fans of  Japanese architect Tadao Ando  will be particularly delighted).

You’ll spend the night at the Ando-designed Benesse House, which overlooks the Seto Inland Sea. Guest rooms in each of the hotel’s unique buildings (Museum, Oval, Beach, and Park) feature different works of art, and — among other perks — guests of the hotel enjoy special after-hours access to Benesse House Museum.

Enjoy a peaceful evening in the laid-back  Setouchi  region of Japan.

Your Naoshima hotel :  Benesse House

Day 7: Morning on Naoshima & Travel to Kyoto

You’ll have a full morning on Naoshima before making the easy trip to Kyoto this afternoon.

If you have the flexibility to add a day to your trip, we recommend an extra night on Naoshima to continue exploring the island and consider a side trip to nearby Teshima Island, home to the incredible  Teshima Art Museum .

This afternoon you’ll retrace your steps by ferry and private transfer, followed by a pleasant ride on the shinkansen to Kyoto. On arrival at Kyoto Station, you’ll be met and escorted to your luxurious hotel.

Kyoto is one of the most culturally rich cities in the world, and the place most travelers dream of when envisioning Japan. Home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years and remains the heart and soul of traditional Japan.

Today it is a large modern city of over a million residents, and at first glance looks almost like any other Japanese town. But the city retains many of its long-established traditions, and despite the neon and concrete prevalent in many parts of town, Kyoto is teeming with beautiful and well-preserved pockets where time seems to move more slowly.

In the early evening, you’ll head out on a fascinating private walking tour through the backstreets of Kyoto’s best-known  geisha  district, Gion.

As you slowly meander your way through the narrow lanes and hidden alleys of this enigmatic district, your expert guide will teach you about the history and reality of Kyoto’s  geiko  (as  geisha  are called in Kyoto) and  maiko  (apprentice geisha). This is a great way to learn about Japan’s most misunderstood traditional profession, and it’s likely you’ll come across geiko or maiko en route to their evening appointments.

Your Kyoto hotel :  The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto  or  Four Seasons Kyoto

Day 8: Unique Highlights of Kyoto (On & Off The Beaten Path)

Kyoto is full of famous sights, but to experience the city on a deeper level it’s also essential to spend time wandering off the beaten path.

No trip to Kyoto would be complete without visiting some of its remarkable temples, shrines, and gardens. For your time in the ancient capital, you will have the chance to take in an exceptional selection of Kyoto’s gems, carefully curated around your unique priorities and interests.

Explore Kyoto highlights such as (for example) the historic Higashiyama district, the charming Philosopher’s Path, and the picturesque Arashiyama district, along with off-the-beaten-path strolls through lesser-known Kyoto areas with your expert guide.

Kyoto is also rightly renowned for its cuisine and artisans. The colorful Nishiki Market is crowded but a must-visit for food and market lovers. For travelers interested in the arts and traditional crafts, the chance to visit with a  shokunin  (master craftsperson) in their private workshop is an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the extraordinary sights and wealth of traditional culture, Kyoto is also home to a booming creative scene, and throughout the ancient capital you’ll also find stunning modern design in museums and galleries, along with shops and cafes.

Following your private tour you’ll have the remainder of your day to relax at your lovely hotel, or continue exploring independently making use of the pre-departure materials we provide to each of our travelers.

Day 9: Fushimi Inari Shrine & Luxurious Ryokan Stay in Hakone

This evening you’ll have a sublime ryokan experience, but before leaving for Hakone you’ll have one last adventure in Kyoto.

An early start is necessary, as you’ll be visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Japan’s most famous sightseeing spots. Fushimi Inari is worth visiting even for people who generally avoid “touristy” places, and the easiest way to avoid crowds is by arriving early!

In the early afternoon you will leave Kyoto behind and travel to Hakone National Park. Hakone is a mountainous area just outside of Tokyo, best known for its luxury ryokans, soothing  onsen  (hot springs), and — on clear days — stunning views of the iconic Fujisan (Mount Fuji).

Hakone is one of our favorite places to experience a  luxury ryokan  in Japan.

Following the easy trip from Kyoto via shinkansen, you’ll be met on arrival and transferred by private vehicle to your ryokan for a chance to settle into your relaxing Japanese-style surroundings.

There is nothing quite like  staying at a ryokan (traditional Japanese-style inn) . Before dinner, enjoy a soak in the healing onsen (hot springs). Dinner tonight will be a magnificent  kaiseki  feast featuring seasonal and local specialties.

Your Hakone ryokan :  Gora Kadan  or  Yama no Chaya

Hakone Jinja Shrine at Ashinoko (Lake Ashi) in Hakone National Park, Japan

Day 10: Morning in Hakone & Afternoon Sumo Basho (Tournament)

Early morning at leisure to relax in your calming Japanese-style surroundings. Have a soak in the onsen, followed by a beautiful Japanese breakfast.

Alternatively, spend the morning exploring Hakone. In addition to ryokan-style rejuvenation, Hakone offers plenty to see and do. A fun and lighthearted way to explore the area is along Hakone’s famous sightseeing loop, which traverses the region via scenic mountain train, funicular railway, gondola, and a cruise across Lake Ashi. Another Hakone highlight is  The Hakone Open-Air Museum , which features sculptures by Rodin, Miró, and Noguchi (among many others) set against the region’s beautiful landscape.

In the early afternoon you’ll return to Tokyo just in time to attend sumo. From Hakone it’s an easy trip to nearby Tokyo via rail and private transfer.

Sumo is one of Japan’s most traditional sports, and  basho  (tournaments) are held just six times each year (learn more in our article,  Sumo in Japan: When, Where & How To See Sumo ).

The chance to attend a sumo basho is both exciting and a fascinating cultural experience. In the late afternoon when the highest-ranked sumo wrestlers begin facing off, the atmosphere in Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena is electric.

If your travel dates don’t overlap with a sumo basho, not to worry! Attending a  morning sumo practice  can also be a fun and fascinating option.

Following your sumo experience, you’ll have the evening free. Enjoy your final night in Tokyo!

Sumo rikishi (wrestlers) during the Tokyo basho (tournament), Japan

Day 11: Depart Japan

You’ll be free until departure. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for some last-minute explorations (and eating!).

In good time for your departure flight, you’ll be picked up at your accommodations for the comfortable private transfer to your departure airport.

Come back to Japan soon!

How to Plan a Luxury Trip to Japan in 2024/2025

Japan, a country rich in tradition, offers plenty of authentic activities to enrich your trip and deepen your knowledge of this charming destination. For example, you could relax at a Japanese-style ryokan (traditional inn) with an onsen (hot spring bath), dress up like a ninja and learn their revered techniques, and view the spectacular Mount Fuji.

On a luxury trip to Japan, not only would you stay at 5-star hotels or exclusive ryokans , benefit from private transportation, and enjoy high-class service, but also it would offer opportunities to experience high-quality exclusive activities accompanied by excellent private guides.

What Can You Enjoy on a Luxury Trip to Japan?

With a worry-free luxury trip to Japan, you should expect to enjoy high-quality experiences and services throughout the whole journey.

1) High-Touch Private Services Would Make Your Trip More Hassle-Free

Professional Japan guides would provide insightful explanations of attractions and experiences to enhance your understanding of Japan . They would cater to your needs during the trip with the flexibility to adjust your itinerary to your requirements or unexpected circumstances, making your trip as hassle-free as possible.

Instead of taking 20,000–30,000 steps a day on public transportation, a private car service in Japan would provide you with a comfortable, relaxing, and more-fulfilling experience.

2) High-Quality Handpicked Activities Offer Unique Experiences to Enrich Your Trip

Every handpicked and exclusive activity is accompanied by a private guide, with no group tour staleness, providing you with more interesting and personalized experiences. Here are some example experiences:

  • Rather than making sushi at a restaurant with other travelers, you could learn how to make sushi and other Japanese dishes from a chef in a traditional Japanese house located in the lush mountains.
  • Instead of viewing part the iconic Mount Fuji from a distance in the ordinary way, you could take a private helicopter to look down at the top of Mount Fuji and fly around the mountain to appreciate the magnificence of Mount Fuji from all directions.
  • Instead of enjoying afternoon tea with geishas in Kyoto alongside other travelers, you and your partner could have the opportunity to experience this authentic activity exclusively.

Taking the Shinkansen from one city to another is an unforgettable experience in Japan. Instead of having an ordinary seat, you would travel in Green Class (a business seat), which is more spacious and comfortable . Certain trains also offer Gran Class, which not only provides a comfortable and roomy seat but also comes with a dedicated attendant who serves complimentary light food and drinks.

3) High-End Hotels (or Ryokans) to Ensure You Have Cozy Nights and a Pleasant Stay

For a luxury trip, we suggest you stay at 5-star hotels to enjoy bigger rooms and the best service. Staying at a Japanese-style ryokan with a cozy tatami would provide you with a luxurious experience that is unique to Japan.

A high-end traditional ryokan offers private onsen bathing and high-class kaiseki (multi-course traditional cuisine), which you wouldn't get to enjoy at an ordinary ryokan. Kyoto has more excellent ryokans than other cities because Kyoto is Japan's top ancient capital with a well-preserved traditional atmosphere. This allows you to have an immersive experience of medieval Japanese accommodation.

Ryokans are easily booked up so we suggest that you plan your trip at least 3–6 months in advance.

How Long to Spend in Japan for Your Luxury Trip

To enjoy the main highlights in Japan (in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka) on a first visit, at least 7 to 10 days are recommended. For a more in-depth exploration of Japan or a Japan and China trip, 10 to 14 days or longer is best.

Below is a suggested itinerary, for inspiration. Our Japan expert would customize your luxury trip based on your preferences and requirements.

A 10-Day Japan Authentic Luxury Itinerary

Experience the best of Japan in the Golden Triangle cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. In each destination, you would enjoy authentic and exclusive experiences to create exquisite memories.

  • Days 1–3: Tokyo
  • Days 4–5: Hakone
  • Days 6–8: Kyoto
  • Days 9–10: Osaka

Start this impressive trip in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, which perfectly combines history and modernity. Experience making sushi and authentic Japanese cuisine (which may even include mountain game) with a local chef in a Japanese house nestled in the lush mountains. Witness captivating Shinto rituals performed by a miko (shrine maiden) while tasting Japanese pastries and matcha. Also take a rickshaw ride to experience the Edo atmosphere in Asakusa.

Taking a private helicopter ride from Tokyo to Hakone would allow you to appreciate the amazing summit view of Mount Fuji and the rural scenery of Hakone. You would spend a night at a high-end traditional ryokan with a private onsen and sample high-class kaiseki, immersing yourself in a truly wonderful experience of traditional Japanese accommodation.

Continue your trip to the ancient capital of Kyoto by taking a business seat on the Shinkansen. Enjoy an exclusive afternoon tea with geishas and your partner, experience the process of making matcha with a professional master, dress up in ninja attire to learn their culture and techniques by immersion, and have close interactions with the friendly deer in Nara including feeding them.

Complete your trip in flourishing Osaka , where your onward flight would determine how much free time you would have to explore the city. According to your interests, we would provide suggestions of the top things to do that both showcase the city's commercial-success vibe and provide a luxurious experience.

How Much Does a Luxury Trip Cost in Japan?

The travel cost in Japan depends on your interests and the level of service you choose. A comfortable private guided tour in Japan based on 5-star hotels costs from US$500 per person per day based on a group of 2 people , including 5-star hotels, private guides and cars, and a full-day itinerary.

For a luxury trip to Japan, we suggest that you select from the best available activities and hotels to enhance your overall experience. For example, you could consider participating in a whole range exclusive activities like Mount Fuji helicopter tours, and you may choose to stay in a ryokan with a private onsen to enjoy more privacy, which each come at additional cost.

Let us know what you are interested in experiencing, and we will provide you with a figure for making your luxury trip ideas a reality.

Best Times for a Luxury Trip in Japan

The best times to visit Japan are in spring (March to May) to see the cherry blossoms and in autumn (September to November) for the autumn foliage. Both times have pleasant middle-season weather.

For a luxury trip, we suggest choosing a travel time when the weather is most pleasant, with more clear days and fewer travelers.

  • To avoid large crowds and enjoy the cherry blossoms, the week before full bloom (around March 16th to 23rd) is the best time. The scenery during this time is almost as stunning as it is when the blossoms are in full bloom, and you would have more space to enjoy it.
  • Late October to early November is the best time to appreciate the colorful autumn foliage with fewer travelers, mild temperatures, and clearer days. You could admire it almost anywhere, including around Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
  • May, June, and September are also excellent times to travel to Japan when the weather is warmer, but not at its hottest, and the crowds are not at their largest.

GUIDE Luxury Travel in Japan Japan excels when it comes to luxury

  • Stories & Guides
  • Luxury Travel in Japan

Japan is, without question, one of the world's most luxurious travel destinations.

Its unrivaled hospitality and attention to detail make its accommodation, craftsmanship and cultural experiences very attractive. Tokyo consistently ranks as the city with the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, with fellow Japanese cities Kyoto and Osaka not far behind.

From remote island beach resorts and exclusive cultural encounters to traditional hot spring retreats offering unparalleled relaxation, Japan is a must-visit location for those seeking the ultimate in luxury travel.

japan luxury travel itinerary

Hospitality is a key part of Japanese culture

World-class hospitality

Japan's world-renowned hospitality can be understood through the concept of omotenashi. This word is slightly tricky to translate, but at its core omotenashi means taking care of your guests wholeheartedly. It can be felt in almost every aspect of Japanese service, and embodies the idea of not just providing guests with what they want, but anticipating and fulfilling those needs before the guest is even aware of them. This is the key to what makes Japanese hospitality so outstanding.

The roots of omotenashi are thought to date back to the traditional tea ceremony, and the concept is now inextricably woven into the fabric of Japanese society. Indeed the country prides itself on having the best hospitality in the world. The only way to truly understand omotenashi though is to experience it for yourself. The extraordinary care and attention to detail simply cannot be matched.

japan luxury travel itinerary

Tokyo has the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world

Luxury gourmet experiences

Japanese cuisine is known around the world for its high quality and regional variety. Thus it comes as no surprise that food is one of the defining characteristics of luxury travel in Japan. From Michelin-starred restaurants to high-end whiskey, there's a luxury culinary experience here to suit every palate.

Alternatively, try kappo ryori, a more casual version of kaiseki in which diners are seated close to the chef to create a more intimate dining experience. Vegans and vegetarians should look out for shojin ryori, which offers the same multi-course extravaganza but without any animal ingredients. And remember that although Japan has a phenomenal number of Michelin-star restaurants, there are plenty of restaurants without the accolade that are also of an exceptionally high standard.

Your culinary experiences in Japan are not limited simply to eating. It's also possible to take part in exclusive private cooking classes with Japanese chefs, in which you can learn how to create some of your favorite dishes and bring the taste of Japan back home with you.

japan luxury travel itinerary

One of Japan's other favorite beverages is whisky, and there are a considerable number of high-end, intimate whisky bars concealed down narrow streets where you can sip your way through some of the world's best.

japan luxury travel itinerary

Ryokan provide a taste of Japan's history

Where to stay

In keeping with the concept of omotenashi, Japan offers travelers world-class luxury accommodation, both in cities and in rural areas. These range from five-star hotels to beautiful machiya homes and traditional Japanese inns known as ryokan.

Ryokan are most commonly found in hot spring areas and are far more than just somewhere to sleep. With tatami flooring, futon bedding and local, seasonal kaiseki cuisine served in your room, ryokan offer visitors the chance to experience Japanese hospitality at its best. Make time to check out the on-site onsen (hot spring baths) to unwind.

A luxury five-star hotel is a more modern option, and there are plenty to choose from in Japan. Seamlessly blending traditional Japanese-inspired design and decor with global standard amenities and service, they provide the ultimate in relaxation and grandeur.

Renting out a machiya is a fantastic option for larger groups or long-term stays. These refurbished Japanese townhouses offer a bit more room and freedom than a hotel or ryokan without sacrificing creature comforts or authentic style.

Craft and culture

The extraordinary level of care present in Japanese hospitality is also readily apparent in the country's traditional crafts. In many areas, it's possible to not only purchase these creations but also to watch the artisans themselves at work. Some of the highlights to look out for include Wajima's durable lacquerware, the delicate and intricately designed Edo-kiriko cut glass and Arita's vibrant ceramics. For the most beautiful accessories, keep an eye out for the beautiful Mikimoto pearls—the first in the world to be cultured—and Kyotango's chirimen, silk crepe used to make kimono, purses and wrapping cloth.

japan luxury travel itinerary

Helicopter tours are a popular way to see Japan's mountainous terrain

Traveling in style

With all these experiences to be had, you won't want to restrict yourself to staying in just one city or prefecture. Luckily, there are plenty of options for traveling across the country in comfort, too.

There are also more laid-back luxury train journeys to indulge in, such as Japan's first luxury sleeper train, the Seven Stars in Kyushu Cruise Train (advance bookings essential), and JR West's Twilight Express Mizukaze (Western Japan). Both sleeper trains offer one-of-a-kind designs more akin to a hotel, from which you can enjoy fine dining, unwind and appreciate the beauty of the passing landscape, as well as off-board excursions.

If you're after something more efficient, modern and flashy, helicopter tours are available in most major cities, including Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama, and will give you unbeatable views of the cityscapes below.

japan luxury travel itinerary

Luxury experiences can be found across the country

Japan's top luxury locations

Just about anywhere in Japan can be a luxury destination, as world-class hospitality, gourmet cuisine and stylish accommodation is found throughout the country. There are a few places in particular, however, that stand out as leading locations to immerse yourself in luxury.

For something more rural, the northernmost island of Hokkaido is perfect. Full of rustic charm and untouched natural beauty, it offers a wide range of privately-guided outdoor activities such as fishing, skiing and hiking, as well as once-in-a-lifetime encounters with wildlife such as whales, Yezo deer, red foxes and rare birds. Finally, the Ryukyu Islands in the south is a favorite luxury beach destination, with exclusive resorts, expansive golf courses, remote island getaways and world-class diving locations.

JAPAN GOLDEN ROUTE TOUR WITH HIROSHIMA

What people love about luxury tours in japan.

June 2023. Take this tour and you won't regret !
This tour is a fabulous introduction to Japan. It is fast paced with lots of walking and use of Japan’s massive transportation system- from the bullet train to the subway with someone to guide you through the complexities. Our guide, Mika, was exceptional making sure each individual’s needs were met and sharing her vast knowledge of the country and culture. The itinerary was varied from big city to country side and we found the Japanese people to always be polite and helpful. The group is limited to 15 or less so you get to know everyone. We were fortunate to have a great group.
Great itinerary with some unexpected goodies. Eriko is very knowledgeable and accommodating. She went above and beyond in taking care of us. Would recommend this tour with Eriko for anyone traveling to Japan. Eriko, thank you so much with our travel plans after the tours end. You saved us a lot of time, trouble and money. We wish you the very best!

Majestic Japan

A master of modernity and steward of tradition, Japan delights and surprises with neon-lit highstreets, ancient temples and boundless natural beauty. Meet knowledgeable locals, see iconic sites, taste new flavours and wonder at Mother Nature, as you tour via bullet train from cutting-edge cities to unexplored wildernesses in luxurious comfort.

What is Japan known for?

Local food & culture

The Japanese have seamlessly adapted to globalization, while maintaining a firm hold on their spirituality and traditions. Intricate tea ceremonies are celebrated throughout the land, some lasting up to four hours, while sushi-making is a celebrated art passed on over many generations. Religion in Japan is dominated by Shinto and Buddhism, both strongly grounded in ritual and tradition and practiced at temples, shrines and spiritual sanctuaries found throughout the country. The intriguing tradition of geisha dates back to the 7th century and is today a living heritage. Visitors delight at the sight of these high-society female entertainers dressed in silk garments and revealing perfectly painted faces. Japanese food too is closely linked to its traditions and offers reason enough to visit. From delicious ramen to green-tea ice cream, local cuisine is centred on seasonal and regional produce. Of course every trip to Japan should be accompanied by a glass or two of sake (rice wine).

Unlike many tourist-trodden destinations, large parts of Japan remain undiscovered by the western traveler. Beyond Japan’s densely-packed cities, Mother Nature showcases her best colors. Two thirds of land in Japan is covered by mountains, hills and forests, while its vast coastline boasts hidden coves, dramatic cliffs and snorkelling-friendly reefs. Home to dozens of volcanoes, Japan’s interior is also where the Japanese have mastered the art of spa thanks to an abundance of mineral-rich water springs bubbling up to the earth’s surface. Situated east of Tokyo, iconic Mt. Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, a must-see attraction and a perfect choice for hiking. National parks and world heritage sites are plentiful in Japan and home to bears, deer, monkeys, cranes and a variety of other wildlife. Perhaps Japan’s most famous natural phenomenon is the spectacular cherry blossom season, which takes place every year between April and May when thousands of cherry blossom trees show off their finest pinks

Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Tokyo.

After passing through customs and luggage collection, you're met by an airport guide who will give you your trip documents and direct you to the private shuttle service that will take you to your hotel. After checking in, spend the rest of the day at leisure, resting and relaxing after your flight. If you want to explore, you may wish to walk around the Imperial Gardens.

Streetlife, Tokyo

Your guide will meet you today in the hotel lobby to run through your trip and offer you any local advice so you can enjoy the country with confidence. In the first section, the guide will explain your itinerary in more detail and answer any questions. This can take up to two hours, so afterwards, head out with your guide to see some of the city's highlights. Perhaps start with taking a cruise from the Hamarikyu Gardens to the old district of Asakusa to see the beautiful Sensoji temple.

Asakusa shrine, Tokyo

Spend the morning at a Sumo stable in the Ryogoku area of the city to watch Sumo wrestlers training up close. The national sport in Japan is still widely followed today and has millions of avid followers worldwide. After the training, head out for a typical Sumo lunch accompanied by some of the wrestlers to get a unique look at their lifestyles.

Ginza nightlife, Tokyo

Travel by bullet train and local lines to Tsumago, a quiet post town in the Kiso Valley. This afternoon walk along the scenic Nakasendo Highway, which once connected Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo) in the 1800s.

Tsumago, Japan

At leisure to walk along and explore the Nakasendo Highway.

Walk along the Nakasendo Highway, Magome

Take the train back to Nagoya and then travel west to Hiroshima.

Atomic bomb dome, Hiroshima

Have a full day at leisure to explore Hiroshima and nearby Miyajima island, with its "floating" torii gate.

Buddhist statues, Miyajima

Travel to Kyoto. With 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 1,600 Buddhist temples and over 400 Shinto Shrines, Kyoto is one of the world's most culturally rich cities. Take the afternoon at leisure to find your feet in Kyoto. Perhaps follow the Kamo River north to see the Philosopher's Walk and Silver Pavilion (Kinkakuji).

Maiko, or apprentice geisha, Kyoto

In the morning, head out with a local guide to see some of the spectacular temples in Kyoto. Stop at Kodai-ji, one of the most exclusive places for tea ceremonies in the city, before continuing on to the Higashiyama district to gaze upon the awe-inspiring architecture of the area. In the evening, set out to the Gion geisha district to the east of the city to hopefully spot a geisha as they go about their business.

Romon Gate, Fushimi Inari, Kyoto

This morning, head out on a tour of the Nishiki Market in Kyoto also known as "Kyoto's kitchen". The guide is the owner and head chef at a restaurant nearby. In the tour, you will walk around the market where the guide selects their locally produced ingredients such as vegetables from Ohara and Satsuma beef raised in southern Kyushu. Scott Gilman's 14-day Japan Itinerary

japan luxury travel itinerary

Scott Gilman is a member of Travel + Leisure's A-List , a collection of the top travel advisors in the world, and can help plan your perfect getaway. Below is an example of the type of itineraries he creates. To work with Scott, contact him at [email protected] .

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

Upon arrival at one of Tokyo's two international airports, you will be met and escorted to Tokyo, a metropolis like no other in the world. From little known neighborhood restaurants serving exquisite Japanese cuisine, to world-renowned French and Italian restaurants, Japan offers the finest selection of indigenous and international dining experiences in the world. Access to the smaller, quintessential local restaurants — which often serve the finest Japanese food and sake — is often difficult (if not impossible) unless one speaks Japanese. Our wealth of experience in Japan however has provided us with a network of restaurants, where chefs will treat our customers as if they are regular clientele — thereby allowing you to experience Japanese cuisine at its finest.

Stay : Aman Tokyo or Mandarin Oriental

Day 2: Tokyo

Discover Tsukiji Outer Market, a mixture of wholesale and retail shops along with numerous restaurants lining the streets and where new culinary trends are born. Try some of its street foods as you explore the market.

A short distance from Tsukiji lies Hamarikyu Garden, a vista of delicately shaped pine trees and tea houses that greet the eyes as you walk inside. An atmosphere of dignity and refinement seems to pervade the air as might be expected of the former garden of a daimyo .

Head to the Asakusa district and Senso-ji Temple, in the very heart of Shitamachi, Tokyo's old merchant district. Asakusa remains Tokyo's most colorful and traditional neighborhood, with a fun atmosphere and many food stalls preparing senbei , traditional and delicious rice crackers, and many varieties of Japanese sweets.

Learn about sushi-making with a top sushi chef at his private restaurant as you dine on a delicious sushi lunch. During the meal, you may try your hand at creating exquisite sushi or spend time with a well-known cooking instructor at her home for a late afternoon to learn the art of Japanese cooking, enjoying a wonderful meal and delightful conversation.

Explore Tennozu Isle, fast becoming a destination for contemporary art and design including the Terrada Art Complex, a constellation of artist studios, galleries, and an art warehouse or venture to the MORI Building Digital Art Museum: teamLab Borderless, a group of artworks that form one borderless world.

Day 3: Tokyo

Stroll through the beautiful wooded grounds of Meiji Shrine, Tokyo's premier Shinto shrine and forested area. Nowhere can the blend of modern and traditional that make up Tokyo today be better seen than in the juxtaposition of the Meiji Shrine to nearby fashionable Aoyama district.

While in the Aoyama area, a professional architect will curate and explain some of Tokyo's fabulous contemporary architecture that is particularly pronounced in this area. Omotesando is a prime location for haute couture brands and architecturally ambitious buildings with many side streets that are fun to explore.

Nearby Omotesando lies one of the city's unique treasures, Nezu Art Museum with its vast rotating collection of Japanese and East Asian art. You will be intrigued by Nezu's exquisite Japanese garden replete with stepping stones, tea houses and an extensive collection of stone lanterns perfectly placed throughout the colorful fauna.

Wander through the quaint local neighborhood of Azabu Juban and enjoy its lovely shopping street, giving you a taste of a resident's everyday life. Stop by some local shops and even a grocery store to see the different foods available.

Meander around the Imperial Palace grounds, where their Majesties the Emperor and Empress reside. The palace, surrounded by a water-filled moat with tree-covered grounds, is a precious taste of nature within Tokyo.

This evening, dine in the Ginza with its many side streets filled with shops, amazing restaurants and some of the most exquisitely displayed goods anywhere in the world.

Stay: Aman Tokyo or Mandarin Oriental

Day 4: Kanazawa and Yamanaka Onsen

Whisk away on the Shinkansen , Japan's bullet train, to Kanazawa (literally, "marsh of gold") in Western Japan. Once governed by the Maeda clan, great patrons of the arts, Kanazawa developed a rich heritage that is reflected in its well-preserved Geisha and Samurai quarters, beautiful gardens, and its distinctive arts, including pottery, lacquerware and gold leaf.

Meander through one of Japan's few remaining samurai neighborhoods, Nagamachi, and visit the Nagamachi Samurai Residence. Wander through Kanazawa's renowned Omicho Market with shops that specialize in foods from this seacoast town and check out its world-class Wajima lacquerware. Wander through Kenroku-en Garden, one of the top three stroll gardens in Japan, before visiting the majestic Seisonkaku Villa.

End your day in Higashi Chaya, the largest of Kanazawa's remaining Geisha districts, to visit a historic ochaya (tea house). Afterward, you will transfer to your ryokan in Yamashiro Onsen, just south of the city. A ryokan (or Japanese inn) stay is a quintessential Japanese experience of ultimate omotenashi or hospitality. Imagine being greeted at a curtained entrance by a kimono-clad lady who will first request that you remove your shoes before stepping on soft tatami-matted floors and be escorted through a Zen-like atmosphere to your room to enjoy matcha green tea and a soak in your private hot spring bath before dinner.

Dress in the comfort of a yukata or cotton robe while you feast on a kaiseki dinner of 12 or more courses that is presented for the eyes first then the palette.

Stay: Araya Totoan or Beniya Mukayu

Day 5: Yamanaka Onsen and Shirakawa-go

Relax this morning in natural hot spring baths, then visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go, a cluster of hamlets over 800 years old nestled in a valley in the Japanese Alps. Stop in Ogimachi with its nearly sixty gassho tsukuri, or thatched roof farmhouses, standing amid vegetable gardens and paddy fields.

After, enjoy an exclusive private visit to one of the world's most famous taiko drum makers where you can see how these magnificent instruments are crafted. You may also see a professional taiko drummer rehearsing, and will have an opportunity to try beating the mighty drums yourselves.

Day 6: Kyoto

Board a train to Kyoto, Japan's former capital sprawling with imperial properties and Zen temples. Upon arrival, discover Kiyomizudera, a magnificent seven pavilion temple built on different levels of the Higashiyama hillside then explore the fun and colorful area around Ninen-zaka and

Sannen-zaka, a pair of pedestrian-only lanes that make for some of the most atmospheric strolling in the whole city. Take a short walk to a beautiful temple where you will enjoy a private tea ceremony with a tea master.

Stroll through the Shijo-Kawaramachi District and its traditional shops selling local foods and crafts. Your walk will end at Yasaka Shrine, located at the epicenter of Gion, the city's Geisha district and considered to be one of the most delightful downtown areas in Japan. The streets boast of stores selling traditional Kyoto crafts and maybe you will catch a glimpse of an elegant maiko or apprentice Geisha who can often be seen strolling through the area.

Stay: The Ritz-Carlton or Park Hyatt

Day 7: Kyoto

Explore Nijo Castle, a magnificent early Edo castle. Outside of the castle extends the Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden with a large pond, ornamental stones and manicured pine trees. Following, participate in a private Zen session with a Buddhist monk while contemplating a beautiful and tranquil Zen garden, followed by a private walk-through of the temple.

Head to Kinkakuji, the famous Temple of the Golden Pavilion. Experience Ryoanji, a beautiful and tranquil fifteenth century rock garden, before exploring Nishiki-koji Market often referred to as 'Kyoto's Kitchen' where hundreds of vendors have their stalls selling colorful foods and goods. Taste special Japanese delicacies, vegetables, fresh fish, dry goods, pickles, and sweets.

Day 8: Kyoto

Head to the rural and wooded area of northwest Kyoto and discover Gio-ji Temple, one of the finest sights in Arashiyama. Gio-ji's simple thatched-roof main hall overlooks a landscape of luxurious moss.

Enjoy your time in Arashiyama, including the surreal Sagano Bamboo Forest. Visit Tenryu-ji (Heavenly Dragon Temple) and its splendid garden. In the autumn, see a colorful array of beautiful maples or cherry trees lining the Hozugawa river during spring.

Explore Okochi Sanso Villa, the former villa of the popular actor Okochi Denjiro with several beautiful gardens, buildings and panoramic views of Kyoto. Expand your knowledge of sake and visit a Kyoto-based micro-brewery to learn how sake is made. You will also have the opportunity to sample some of their delicious products in a private tasting.

Attend a unique evening at a Japanese ochaya for a private dinner with Geisha entertainment. An ochaya only accepts guests through an introduction from its trusted clients. This experience will take you back in time, and is so special that most Japanese will not even have the opportunity to try it.

Day 9: Nara

Waking up early, discover Fushimi Inari Shrine, a Shinto sanctuary. At the foot of the mountain, the many gates, halls and stairways compose an unusual spatial situation. Up along the forested hillside, space tunnels of thousands of vermilion-painted torii gates makes a visit an extraordinary experience.

Journey onward to Nara, Japan's first permanent capital established during the early 8th century. Nara's aesthetic, architecture and history differ considerably to Kyoto and is well worth a visit. Your sojourn begins at Nara Park, where deer, considered to be messengers of the Shinto gods, roam free as they have done since ancient times.

Nara can be easily traversed on foot, and most of your day here will be spent walking. After visiting Todaiji Temple, which contains a nearly 50-foot tall great Buddha, visit Kasuga Taisha, an 8th century Shinto shrine, and Kofuku-ji which houses the subliminal statue of Ashura, the guardian of the Law and a National Treasure.

Heading off to rural Nara, visit the house of a 20th generation craftsman whose family has made tea whisks for the Japanese tea ceremony for over 500 years. He will demonstrate how these whisks are made by hand-carving bamboo and represent an integral part of The Way of Tea .

This evening, stay at Sasayuri-Ann, a unique thatched roof luxurious rice terraced villa in a gorgeous and rural area of Uda in Nara Prefecture. Dinner can be prepared by a Michelin-starred chef or sit around the hearth and cook your own shabu-shabu.

Stay : Rice Terrace Villa Sasayuri-Ann

Day 10: Nara

Before breakfast, enjoy hiking in Akame (where ninja began), a beautiful and forested area with 48 waterfalls. Visit the house of a 25th generation craftsman whose family has made tea whisks for the Japanese tea ceremony for over 500 years. He will do a private bamboo carving demonstration.

Sasayuri-Ann offers some really fun and special experiences in an intimate setting, including private yoga lessons, farming and local fruit picking excursions, music workshops, guided hikes, and a nighttime fire ceremony.

Stay: Rice Terrace Villa Sasayuri-Ann

Day 11: Naoshima and the Inland Sea

At Shin-Osaka, take a shinkansen to Okayama Station. A short drive to the Port of Uno will follow to board a private water taxi for a few minute ride to the island of Naoshima, a center of contemporary art in Japan.

This afternoon, take a walk-through of the must see Chichu Art Museum — built specifically to house the works of Claude Monet, Walter De Maria, and James Turrell. Visit the Lee Ufan Museum, designed by Tadao Ando which features works by the contemporary artist Lee Ufan, who was born in Korea but has been working and teaching in Japan.

Transfer to your accommodation at Benesse House, a museum hotel also designed by Tadao Ando, and explore its beautiful environs and contemporary art installations.

Stay : Benesse House

Day 12: Naoshima and Teshima

Island hopping will be on tap today beginning with a private water taxi to the Island of Teshima. Visit Teshima Yokoo House, Teshima Art Museum, and Les Archives du Coeur all of which are installations that abound the island. Afterward, board a private water taxi for a short ride to the Island of Inujima where you will experience the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum and the Inujima Art House Project.

Day 13: Naoshima, Shikoku, and Tokyo

Before leaving the Inland Sea, explore the Naoshima Art House Project which is an art project in the Naoshima Honmura district. Here, artists took empty houses scattered about residential areas in a fishing village and turned the spaces into works of art, weaving in history and memories of the period when the buildings were lived in and used.

Depart Naoshima via private water taxi across the Inland Sea to Shirobana Koen on the island of Shikoku. Visit the village of Mure and the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, which houses 150 sculptures — many of which are still unfinished, preserving the working atmosphere of Noguchi's studio.

Fly to Tokyo, and enjoy your final evening in Japan at one of Tokyo's great eateries.

Stay : Mandarin Oriental or Aman

Day 14: Depart Tokyo

Depending on your flight time, you will be picked up at your hotel and driven to Tokyo's Haneda International Airport or Narita International Airport for your flight home. Our representative will assist you with checking in at the airport.

Tokyo is a fascinating, exhilarating and sometimes overwhelming melding of old and new. There’s so much to see and do that it can be very challenging to plan. I’ve put together an in-depth Tokyo with kids itinerary for four days that breaks down what to do each day based on geography and transportation so that you maximize your time.

Day 5: Day trip from Tokyo to Hakone

Head toward Mount Fuji on a wonderful day trip from Tokyo to Hakone, 100km southwest of the city. The journey will take 2 hours by public transit but it’s such a different experience than you’ll find anywhere else!

Pro tip : There’s a lot of different transportation involved in this day trip. One alternative I wish we’d considered is this Hakone/Fuji private tour . While it would have been more expensive, we would have made much better use of our time!

To get to Hakone, you’ll either use your JR Pass (if you’re ready to activate it) or the Hakone Free Pass to get to Odawara station and then continue on the local Tozan train line. To maximize your time, be sure to reserve a private room for your family at Hakone Yuryo onsen for 6pm. More details on that later, but we were not able to get an evening reservation and it definitely messed with our schedule!

I recommend that you proceed all the way to Lake Ashi and start your time in Hakone exploring the town area surrounding the port and you can also consider taking the lovely forest walk to the famous torii gate.

A highlight for the whole family is the pirate boat that takes you across the lake. Supposedly you can see Mount Fuji from the boat, though we weren’t able to because it was a little cloudy surrounding the masive mountain. Even so the views are lovely and you’ll go right by the torii gate.

Once you reach the opposite shore, you’ll have the opportunity to take the Hakone Ropeway up the mountainside – and this is where you should get fantastic views of Mount Fuji if you didn’t see it from the lake! Even on a cloudy day, we could tell how absolutely massive it was – and it kept getting larger as we went higher. This is one of the world’s longest ropeways, taking nearly 30 minutes to complete.

The top of the Ropeway is around 1000 meters elevation. To descend on the other side you’ll take the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, which connects to the Hakone Tozan Train – so many different forms of transportation, and thankfully they’re all included with the Hakone Free Pass (even the pirate boat)!

Your next stop is the Hakone Open Air Museum . I’ve heard incredible things about it, and this is probably the best art museum in Japan for kids! There are unique artistic play structures, enormous sculptures and more. Unfortunately last admission is at 4:30 and we weren’t able to make it by then because our reservation at Hakone Yuryo onsen was in the morning and pushed everything back.

The last item on your list of things to do in Hakone on a day trip is pay a visit to Hakone Yuryo onsen . This traditional hot spring inn provides a wonderfully relaxing experience and is a must-do in Japan! While there are public baths available here, you’ll want to reserve a private room since you’re visiting Japan with children. We opted for the Type 3 room, which is very serene and includes everything you’ll need for an amazing visit to an onsen with kids – snacks, towels, robes and plenty of space. The room is yours for two hours, so relax and enjoy to wind down after your busy day trip to Hakone!

If you bring a travel car seat with you, the fastest way to get to Hakone Yuryo is by taxi; otherwise you can take the local bus (just use Google Maps to find your way). For your return to the train station, they offer a shuttle van.

A logistical recommendation: the stretch in Hiroshima Prefecture is brief but transportation-heavy. You’ll potentially take trains, boats, buses and taxis. If possible, I suggest just bringing a few days worth of clothing in backpacks while the rest of your luggage is sent on to meet you in Kyoto. The excellent Yamato Ta-Q-Bin can be arranged by your hotel or nearest 7-11 and it’s pretty amazing. For just $50, our two suitcases and a box with the kids backpacks was waiting in our Kyoto hotel room!

Today is a long day and an emotionally heavy one, but one that’s worth experiencing if your kids are old enough. You’ll hop the earliest train you can manage all the way to Hiroshima, near the southern end of Japan’s main island. Once you arrive at Hiroshima Station, it’s easy to use the sightseeing bus (included in your JR Pass ) to get to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. If you haven’t eaten lunch yet, there are some good options in the Hiroshima Station.

Read more about visiting the A-bomb sites of Hiroshima with kids . There are many factors to weigh as you decide if and how to include Hiroshima in your family’s Japan itinerary.

All in all, we spent just over two hours visiting the Hiroshima Peace Park and Peace Memorial Museum. When you’ve finished there, your next stop is Miyajima Island and there are two ways to get there: the easy way and the cheap/hard way.

We mistakenly did it the cheap/hard way and I do not recommend it. We used the #2 local tram from the Dome station to Miyajimaguchi station (approximately 1 hour) and then took the very pleasant Miyajima ferry. While this option is very inexpensive, I wouldn’t have done it if I realized that the alternative was available and better.

There’s a ferry that picks up near Motoyasubashi Bridge right next to the A-Bomb Dome . It’s the Aqua Net Ferry , and we saw it but weren’t sure if it was legit or not because it didn’t look nearly as polished as every other Japanese transportation option. We were just being silly. While it’s a little pricey at 2200 JPY per adult and 1100 JPY per child, it’ll shave about an hour (and a lot of hassle) off your travels. Just buy a one-way ticket, as on the way back you’ll take the JR Ferry and then connect on a convenient train to Hiroshima Station.

When you arrive on Miyajima, you’ll want to walk to your hotel to drop off your bag and then immediately go get dinner. Everything closes early! Our hotel had to call around to find a place that was open at 7pm, but the ladies at Okonomiyaki Kishibe served up delicious food in as homey a setting as you can imagine.

The next day and a bit will give you an opportunity to step back in time on Miyajima Island, one of several islands in Hiroshima Bay. Even if you’ve never heard of it, you’ve probably seen photos of its famous “floating” torii gate! It’s an icon of Japan. The logistics of incorporating Miyajima into your itinerary can be tricky but there are a few reasons why you should consider it.

While most other places you’ll visit on this Japan itinerary for families are fairly well developed cities, Miyajima Island remains a quiet, rural area full of cultural and natural highlights. The ancient Itsukushima Shrine is still largely preserved today. While nearby Hiroshima was devastated by the A-bomb, Miyajima was spared other than some debris found nearby.

Much of the island’s developed area is accessible on foot, though you can opt for a ropeway (cable car) to reach the beautiful summit of Mt. Misen. Miyajima is a great place to enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring or fiery red maple trees in the fall.

Keep in mind that Miyajima is an island with a population of just 2000 people, and most visitors are day trippers. That means you won’t find a ton of restaurants or stores open once the sun goes down, but you’ll also be able to experience the island’s true magic away from the crowds!

Thanks to its very traditional nature, Miyajima island is a great place to try out staying at a ryokan – a typical Japanese guest house. We had a wonderful stay at Miyajima Kinsuikan , which included a large family room with very comfortable futons set up each night, a yukata for everyone (several kids’ sizes available), unlimited access to the wonderful onsen (geothermal bath) in the basement and a seafood-heavy bento-style breakfast that is typical of the region.

On the last point, I’ll say that the staff tried hard to accommodate our dietary needs but definitely didn’t understand due to the language barrier. I ended up taking the kids to Starbucks (yes, Starbucks!) a block away so that we wouldn’t start our days hungry. If you have dietary restrictions and plan to stay at any ryokan in Japan that offers breakfast, it may be best to tell them what you will eat rather than what you won’t – in retrospect if I had said “only rice, salmon, eggs and vegetables” that probably would have been easier for everyone.

But enough about breakfast… Today’s itinerary will seem jam-packed as you read through it, but it really isn’t. You’ll be able to enjoy much of what the island has to offer and feel relaxed while doing it!

One important tip: if you want to walk under the torii, be sure to check the tide schedule in advance. You may need to shift the order of some things around. When we visited, one of the low tide periods lasted for much of the afternoon with just a few inches of water directly under the torii. Prepare for the ground to be very mucky though!

Spend your morning at this fantastic tea ceremony and calligraphy class . It’s a wonderful opportunity to get a taste of some traditional aspects of Japanese culture. There are three parts to the experience. First, your family will be dressed in fancy kimonos by the team of experienced ladies. They have a huge range of styles and sizes to choose from, and adult women in particular will get to experience alllll the layers.

Once you’re properly dressed, you’ll participate in a tea ceremony with the head of the cultural center. She clearly explains each step and its significance. You’ll also get some unique chocolates along with the matcha!

Finally, your family will learn some basics of Japanese calligraphy and choose a character to write on your own souvenir! Since you’re already fully dressed, you can also step outside to. the zen garden and have the staff take some photos for you. They took photos of us during the activities as well and shared them via AirDrop – they aren’t professional, but it’s nice to have them included at no additional cost. This was one of my favorite activities to do in Japan with kids. The organizer suggests a minimum age of 6 years old, though I think that for most kids it’s better for 8+.

It’s time for lunch, so head back to Miyajima’s main shopping street – just follow the crowds one block in from the coast. There are plenty of inexpensive options to take away from kiosks, and we opted for delicious cups of fried chicken that we enjoyed in a peaceful courtyard. You’ll also find various options for seafood, momiji manjū cakes and more! If your kids haven’t exhausted their souvenir budget yet, there are plenty of opportunities here as well.

Continue on past the commercial part of town to visit Itsukushima Shrine. It’s a beautiful and serene place with more than a thousand years of history. Like most shrines it’s just a few dollars to enter and you can move as quickly or slowly along the one-way path as you’d like. There isn’t much written information provided on-site, but you can read up in advance here for a fuller understanding of the complex and its history.

When you exit the shrine, look for signs for the Miyajima Ropeway. This is the cablecar that will take you to the summit of Mount Misen, which dominates the island’s landscape. It’s a somewhat steep 15 minute walk to the ropeway station at Momijidani, so if anyone in your family has limited mobility consider taking the free shuttle bus from Momijidani Park – more info here .

The ropeway is a fun activity for kids and parents alike! You’ll transfer mid-way to reach the summit, where you’re treated to spectacular views of Hiroshima Bay and its islands. We enjoyed the view from Shishiiwa Observatory but if you want to hike another 20 minutes you’ll arrive at Mount Misen Observatory and enjoy additional views.

You’ll either take the ropeway back down or hike it – the choice is yours, and may depend on how long the line for the ropeway is! We waited for about 30 minutes shortly before the last descent of the day and honestly it might have been faster just to walk down. We stopped at Niwa Cafe for dinner, which was a great choice!

End your evening with a relaxing soak in the onsen at Miyajima Kinsuikan. You’ve earned it after such a busy day!

Since this is a fast-paced 10 day Japan itinerary, you’re just going to pop into Osaka on your way from Miyajima Island to Kyoto. The good news is that the trains are very efficient so you’ll have a big chunk of the day to explore!

You’ll take the ferry back to the mainland and then a train to Hiroshima station. From there it’s easy to pick up a bullet train to Osaka. In total, travel time is around 3.5 hours. Once you’re in Osaka and Kyoto, the  Kansai Thru Pass is very handy as it covers all of the local rail and bus lines that aren’t already included with your Japan Rail pass .

With just a day in Osaka, you won’t be able to do everything unfortunately. One of the best things to do in Osaka with kids is pay a visit to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan . When it opened in 1990 it was the largest aquarium in the world! While it no longer holds that title it’s still a site to behold. There are incredible creatures here including while sharks, and the spiraling design continuously reveals more and more wonders.

If you’re visiting Japan in spring, be sure to check the schedule for the March sumo tournament – typically held during the second and third weeks. You’ll want to buy tickets well in advance, but I highly recommend attending if you can! Sumo is a unique experience and deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. The environment is family-friendly and many visitors bring food from local convenience stores, as concessions are minimal inside the stadium.

Another great option is to reserve a table at the Osaka Pokemon Cafe – check the calendar 31 days in advance. It can be very hard to get a table (we tried!) but thankfully there are other Pokemon things to do in Japan to entertain kids of all ages.

While you’re in Osaka, walk around the famous Dotonbori area to see the lights and spectacle. You can grab dinner nearby if you’re able to find a table without a huge line – there are some amazing options nearby for beef and seafood! If all else fails, check out the standby of CoCo ICHIBANYA for delicious curry.

Wrap up your day by taking the train from Osaka to your Kyoto hotel . It’s only about an hour, though it’s the end of a long and transit-heavy day.

Days 9-10: Kyoto

You’ve reached the final leg of your family Japan itinerary, which is bittersweet. Kyoto is a wonderful place to conclude your trip because it feels so distinctly Japanese (with a thick overlay of tourists, to be completely honest). It’s truly a great city and such a unique place to spend a few days since it retains the traditional architecture and vibe of pre-war Japan.

A quick note on where to stay in Kyoto: there are lots of excellent hotels, and it’s much more compact than Tokyo (for example). But in Kyoto you have two excellent opportunities to stay in a Pokemon themed room at Mimaru Kyoto Station and Mimaru Nishinotoin Takatsuji . We stayed at the latter because it was available, but the entire chain is extremely family-friendly. To say that my kids lost their minds from the surprise when we walked into our room is an understatement. If you can book one of those rooms, it’s 100% worth it.

Kyoto is a beautiful city full of ancient sites blended with modern culture. Follow our 2 day Kyoto with kids itinerary to learn exactly how to make the most of your visit!

If I had my druthers, we would have followed this longer Japan itinerary for 2 weeks of family travel. I’ve offered it here in case you’re lucky enough to visit for longer.

This itinerary covers roughly the same geographic area as the itinerary we did above but allows you to see more. Be sure to read the 10 day itinerary above – I’ll reference that in this expanded itienrary! Pay close attention to the overview, as there are some additional hotel stops and a slightly different transportation strategy.

Day 6-7: Disney

Day 8: Hiroshima

Day 9: miyajima island.

Day 10-12: Osaka*

Day 13-14: Kyoto *

Nights 6-7 near Disneyland:

– Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay

– Hilton Tokyo Bay

Nights 8-9 on Miyajima Island:

Nights 10-11 in Osaka*:

– Hotel Intergate Osaka Umeda

– Holiday Inn & Suites Shin Osaka

Nights 12-14 in Kyoto *:

*To decrease hotel moves, you can consider staying in Kyoto the whole time. Kyoto and Osaka are only about an hour apart, but you may wind up making the trip a few times because there are plenty of kid-friendly things to do in Osaka!

– Tokyo subway pass

– Disney Sea and Disneyland

– Universal Studios Japan

Days 1-5: Tokyo & day trip to Hakone

Spend days 1-5 as described above in the 10 day Japan itinerary for families.

Days 6-7: Tokyo Disney

On the morning of Day 6, transfer to a hotel near Tokyo Disney like Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay . While you could stay at a hotel elsewhere in Tokyo, it’s hard to beat the convenience of being right on the monorail! The quieter waterfront location can also be a nice respite after the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

Tokyo Disney includes both Disneyland and DisneySea. Many Disney lovers regard these as some of the best parks in the world, as they’re very efficiently run and include some unique rides you won’t find elsewhere. And the tickets are a fraction of what you’d pay to visit Walt Disney World! Buy your tickets in advance and just flash the QR code to enter.

After you buy your tickets, be sure to download the Tokyo Disney Resort App. That will grant you access to the free Priority Pass system, which allows you to schedule return times for some attractions.

Before you go, read these helpful DisneySea tips and Tokyo Disneyland tips .

Spend day 8 visiting the A-bomb sites of Hiroshima . You’ll be spending this night (and the following) on Miyajima Island at Miyajima Kinsuikan , so if you don’t feel that visiting Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the right choice for your family you can go directly to the island and spend the afternoon at its excellent aquarium.

Spend day 9 on Miyajima island as described above. You’ll do a tea ceremony and calligraphy class in the morning, visit the Itsukushima Shrine shrine after lunch and then take the ropeway to the top of Mount Misen to enjoy stunning views of Hiroshima Bay.

Days 10-12: Osaka

While we only spent one day in Osaka, I wish we’d had longer to base ourselves there! Not only does the city have some wonderful family-friendly attractions but it also makes a great base for day trips.

On your way back from Hiroshima to Osaka, stop at Himeji Castle for several hours. It’s the most impressive castle in the country and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original structure was built in 1333 but what you see today dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. For a deeper look, book this excellent private tour of Himeji Castle .

Once you arrive in Osaka itself and settle into your hotel, head out to see the bright lights of Dotonbori and grab dinner. This would also be a great time to visit Pokemon Cafe if you’re able to get a table (reservations open 31 days in advance but there are occasionally walk in tables).

For days 11 and 12 you’ll have some tough choices to make! With young children, make the Aquarium Kaiyukan a priority – it’s really remarkable. If you’re visiting Japan with teens, tweens or older kids then plan to spend a day at Universal Studios Japan – it has favorites like Harry Potter World and Super Nintendo World and is extremely easy to get to if you stay at Hotel Intergate Osaka Umeda or nearby.

If you’re visiting Osaka in March, consider spending a few hours at the huge sumo tournament at Edion Arena!

Be sure to stop by A Happy Pancake for breakfast or lunch. They have both sweet and savory options, and their distinctively Japanese pancakes are the thickest and fluffiest you’ve ever seen! The Doyamacho location is the most convenient in Osaka (there are also outposts in Tokyo and Kyoto).

You’ll probably also want to squeeze in a day trip to Nara to see the famous deer of Nara Park. Don’t miss the “big Buddha” and the beautiful Kasuga Taisha Shrine while you’re there, along with cherry blossoms in the spring and bright red foliage in the fall. It’s exactly one hour each way using public transit, so if you feel tight on time you can go for just a half day.k

At the end of day 12, hop on a quick train to Kyoto to settle into your hotel for the last stop on your Japan adventure.

Days 13-14: Kyoto

Spend days 13 and 14 exploring Kyoto as described in our 2 day Kyoto itinerary .

Are you looking for an itinerary that’s a little slower, whether because you’re visiting Japan with toddlers or just prefer not to cram so much in? I’ve got you covered. In this itinerary you’ll only split your time between two bases and you’ll enjoy plenty of activities that are unique to Japan but still extremely little kid friendly!

To really level up this kid-friendly Japan trip, book your flights into Tokyo and out of Kansai International Airport (KIX) south of Osaka. You’ll save travel time and train fare since you really don’t need a Japan Rail pass for this itinerary!

Day 1-5: Tokyo with day trip to DisneySea

Day 6-10: Kyoto with day trips to Nara and Osaka

Nights 6-10 in Kyoto:

– DisneySea

– Nara day tour

Days 1-5: Tokyo with day trip to Disney

Follow our 4 day Tokyo itinerary for families to explore the city’s many facets, but break up your time with a day trip to DisneySea .

Days 6-10: Kyoto + day trips

Follow our 2 day Kyoto itinerary for families . Add in at least one day trip to Osaka to visits sites like Aquarium Kaiyukan and a day trip to Nara to see the famous deer. You might even have time to go to  Universal Studios Japan ! It’s even possible to take a day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima to pay your respects at the A-bomb sites , and some families may opt to send one parent to do that while the other pursues more kid-friendly options in Kyoto.

I’ve written up many helpful Japan travel tips , but I want to highlight a few here that are specific to visiting with kids.

  • Plan well in advance. Many hotel rooms are only rated for two people, so your options for a family will be even more limited if you wait too long.
  • Bring a folding car seat with you. While public transportation is excellent in Tokyo and between cities, you may want to take a taxi from the airport with your luggage after a long flight. We also found that Kyoto public transportation wasn’t nearly as robust.
  • Let your kids go wild in convenience stores! They’re a great place to grab unique candies, sandwiches for a picnic or even delicious fried chicken.
  • Get your kids involved in planning. Check out my son’s favorite things to do in Japan with kids .
  • Bring a portable charger (or two) since you’ll be using your phone all day long to take pictures, translate menus and look up directions.

I hope these family-friendly Japan itineraries have give you the confidence to plan your own adventure!
