Cabin pressure: 1.4 million holidaymakers forget passports

09 February 2019

Britons more likely to check holiday weather than travel documents

sainsbury's travel insurance policy document

British holidaymakers are routinely turning up at airports without their passports causing holiday headaches before they have even seen an inflight menu.

A new study from Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Insurance reveals that 1.4 million (2) holidaymakers have forgotten their crucial travel documents before leaving the UK. In fact Britons admit they are more likely to check their holiday destination weather than their passport the week before they travel (64% vs 52%). Sainsbury’s Bank is urging holidaymakers to make sure they have all the relevant documents before they leave home as travel insurance policies do not typically cover forgotten passports.

A further 2.7 million (3) people have seen dream trips turn to disaster by missing flights at the start of their holiday. With the study finding 2.3 million (4) people also go away without travel insurance, holidaymakers need to spend time planning ahead to ensure their getaways get off to a flying start.

Holiday hazards lead to people feeling stressed (47%) and upset (31%) and one in 10 (11%) admitted they felt like they had ruined their holiday.

Preparation is key to minimising stress at the security gate. More than a third (36%) of people do as much online preparation as possible and prepare everything in advance (32%). And nearly one in 10 (8%) holidaymakers turn to calming activities such as meditation to combat travel trauma.

Karen Hogg, Head of Insurance at Sainsbury’s Bank , said: “Holidays should mean a break from the stress of everyday life. Making sure you have all of your travel documents in place, and with you when you leave the house is as important as having good quality travel insurance in place.  It’s worth noting that insurers are unlikely to cover you if you’ve left your passport at home.

“With recent issues such as flight disruption at airports and adverse weather conditions in parts of Europe, you may want to ensure that your travel insurance policy provides disruption cover, particularly if you have connecting flights. We offer a range of insurance policies to cover different travel needs.”

Students are guilty of leaving planning to the last minute and are most likely to miss flights and leave their travel documents behind (10%). Families typically make it to their destination stress-free but are more likely to leave valuables such as medicine and jewellery at home (8%).

Sainsbury’s Bank offers five top tips on travel preparation

  • Schedule a diary reminder: Write on your wall calendar or put in a diary reminder in your phone to check all travel documents at least a couple of weeks before you travel.
  • Locate your passport: It’s easy to put your passport in a ‘safe place’ and forget where it is. Don’t get caught and check your passport before you pack your suitcase. Don’t forget many countries need a visa such as an ESTA if you’re going to the States and you will need to have at least six months remaining on your passport for many countries. If your passport is damaged you may also be refused travel.
  • Check cover for travel disruption: Check your travel insurance policy covers for any unforeseen changes to your holiday plans, such as being unable to get home due to poor weather.
  • Consider weather woes and more: Make sure you leave in plenty of time to get to the airport, especially in adverse weather conditions. You should also check if your travel insurance policy covers you missing a flight as a result. If you’re heading to the slopes this year, check your travel insurance has winter sports cover and also covers weather delays, road closures and lift passes.
  • Create a checklist: Holidays can be stress-free with a good checklist. Create a to-do list at least a week before you travel so you don’t leave anything you need behind.

Every holidaymaker should consider travel insurance before they go away and Sainsbury’s Bank offers Nectar card holders up to 20% discount on travel policies. Customers can find out more online at https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/insuring/ins_travelinsurance_trv , to get a quote and pick the right travel cover to suit them.

Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance Review

Links marked * are affiliate links..

In this Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance review, we’ll be taking a closer look at what the company has to offer you in the area of travel insurance.

We look at the kind of travel policies Sainsbury’s offer, checking what comes as standard with the policy and what you need to pay extra for. We’ll also look at any special offers the company have with regards to Nectar points.

Types of Travel Insurance Sainsbury’s Offer

As most of us know, supermarkets don’t just sell food anymore. These days they sell a range of other products and services, including financial products like Travel Insurance. But what kind of cover do Sainsbury’s offer and is it any good?

The first thing to note is that Sainsbury’s offer three different types of travel insurance cover. These are single trip, annual trip and extended stay. Let’s look at each in a little more detail.

Sainsbury’s Single Trip Travel Insurance

Sainsbury’s single trip cover does exactly what it says on the tin, in that it provides cover for one trip during the year.

It’s possible to get cover just for yourself or you can also get it for your partner, family or even for a group of people. You can also specify what area of the world you will need the cover for. It could be the UK, Europe or the rest of the world. This may help you to save money on your quote.

To provide cover for people of all budgets, Sainsbury’s have three different levels of cover you can choose from. The cover levels offered are Silver Cover, Gold Cover and Platinum Cover.

Some of the key benefits that come as standard with the single trip policy are things like medical emergency expenses, cancellation costs, personal baggage cover, personal accident cover, gadget cover, personal money, mugging cover, end supplier failure and travel disruption.

The level of cover you opt for – Silver, Gold or Platinum – will decide the financial limits for each event which may occur. For an in-depth look please see the chart below.

sainsbury's travel insurance policy document

There are also optional benefits which you can add to a policy for an extra cost. These include enhanced gadget cover, golf cover, wedding cover, cruise cover, winter sports cover and a vehicle hire excess waiver. You can again see details of the levels of cover involved on the chart below.

sainsbury's travel insurance policy document

The good thing about having these policy benefits as add-ons – rather than as standard in the policy – is that it can save you money by not paying for things you don’t need.

There is no upper age limit with the Sainsbury’s single trip cover.

If you’re a Nectar card holder then you can get 20% off when you get an online quote.

Sainsbury’s Annual Trip Cover

If you plan to take more than one trip this year, then Sainsbury’s annual multi-trip cover may be a good solution for you.

Annual trip cover could help you to save time and money by not having to sort out separate policies for each trip you take.

There are no limits to the amount of trips you can take in a year with a Sainsbury’s Annual trip policy. That being said, each trip will be limited to 92 days in length (if you opt for platinum cover).

Again, there are 3 different levels of cover you can take out. These are Silver, Gold and Platinum cover. Each of these levels of cover comes with different monetary limits on the amount you can claim for each eventuality.

Sainsbury’s top level of cover – their platinum cover – offers unlimited medical emergency expenses. It also comes with up to:

  • £7,500 of cover for the cancellation of your trip
  • £3,000 personal baggage cover
  • £50,000 personal accident cover
  • £750 of gadget cover
  • £750 for personal money
  • £500 mugging cover
  • £2500 end supplier failure cover
  • £7,500 for travel disruption

Optional benefits you can add to Sainsbury’s annual trip cover include:

  • enhanced gadget cover
  • wedding cover
  • winter sports cover
  • vehicle hire excess waiver

Obviously these will come at an extra cost.

sainsbury's travel insurance policy document

Sainsbury’s Extended Stay Cover

Finally, let’s look at Sainsbury’s Extended Stay cover.

Up until now the cover options we’ve looked at have only covered trips of up to 92 days. This has also been dependant on which level of cover you are interested in.

Sainsbury’s Extended Stay Cover covers you for trips of up to 548 days with Platinum cover or 365 days with Silver or Gold cover. This can be great if you’re thinking about taking a year out to go travelling or something similar.

The image below outlines the claim limits for each level of cover. Again, you can get up to 20% off an online quote if you’re a Nectar Card holder.

sainsbury's travel insurance policy document

Extra Benefits for Nectar Card Holders

You’ll already know from reading this review that Nectar Card holders can get up to 20% off when they get a quote online for Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance.

There is another benefit available for Nectar Card holders, though. This comes in the form of a points boost! Sainsbury’s are currently offering double Nectar Points on any shopping or fuel you buy at Sainsbury’s when you take out an annual travel insurance policy with them.

As we can see, Sainsbury’s offer a broad range of cover options with their Travel Insurance policies. You can choose from Silver, Gold or Platinum cover, meaning there is a choice for all budgets. They also let you choose from a range of optional extras from winter sports cover to enhanced gadget cover, meaning you only pay for the policy benefits you need.

On top of this, Nectar Card holders can get up to 20% off when they get a quote online. They also get double points on their Sainsbury’s shopping and fuel all year when they take out an annual policy.

The worst insurance out there. Stay away!!

Bad, inhumane and robotic service at Sainsbury's Home Insurance It is a shame that I cannot give half a star. The only service they provided was picking up the phone after multiple attempts and persistent request to pay for a penalty for a direct-debit debacle. The only excellent service came when I decided to cancel my insurance. It appears that the workers are happy for the clients to go elsewhere, so they only reiterate words on the website about the insurance. There is no room for any humane exchange and attempts to understand the policy holders. Note, I was not making a claim. I was only attempting to resolve an issue with the direct debit from by bank which resulted in an unsuccessful direct debit to sainsbury's insurance. In this same month, the same thing happened with other companies, including EE and none of them automatically applied a penalty. The other companies only attempted again at a later date and it worked. Sainsbury's should focus on selling groceries, which is what they are good at. The worst service ever to a policy holder who has never made a claim in 5 years.

Please do not use Sainsbury’s Bank…

Please do not use Sainsbury’s Bank Travel insurance. My son had a terrible accident whilst abroad and the hospital he was taken to by ambulance would not touch his insurance as they say that the insurance company currently apparently owe them over £300,000. I really don’t want anyone else to go through a similar experience. There are 3 UK companies they will not touch for this reason. I had to fly out and took out insurance with Avanti. The hospital said that if anything happened to me whilst there, I would be covered as Avanti are good.

Sainsburys travel insurance was taken…

Sainsburys travel insurance was taken out for our holiday to Amsterdam last September, we had to cancel this as both went down with Covid. These are underwritten and claims handlers are Great Lakes and CSA We were refused a claim twice, they said the first time we weren’t covered for covid. The second time they told us we didn’t provide a certificate to say we couldn’t travel. Even though we’d passed on details of our gp to the insurance co. as they said they didn’t give out certificates for covid anymore. They said they could write to them. We’d provided photos of our positive covid tests in front of the time and date on our computer. Anyway, wanted to give people a heads up that we took our plight to the Financial Ombudsman and we’ve just found out we’ve won our case. So the insurance company has to pay us plus interest. So don’t give up!

I still can't believe that I received this renewal quote (Car Insurance) from Sainsbury Bank but there it was in an email nonchalantly and in a way that they seemed proud of themselves telling me that my renewal cost will be a total price £836.32 and reminded me that last year's total price was £267.70. FYI, I've not made any motor claims for 20+ years. That's an extortionate increase of 312%!!! Disgusting and downright criminal!!

Stay well clear

Stay well clear. My wife's phone got stolen while abroad. We couldn't register an account on the portal and had to argue with a CS person to get them to help me. Once logged in, the portal had incorrect contact information for filing a gadget claim. I then discovered gadget insurance is outsourced to Taurus who are an absolute circus when we finally managed to contact them. A phone is pretty much an essential part of life these days. If it gets lost/stolen abroad and you are insured by Sainsbury's/Taurus, you will be waiting 2+ weeks for a replacement - Minimum! Urge you to look elsewhere.

Most appalling service and claims process…

Most appalling service and claims handling i have ever experienced. Ryanair are faster at paying out, and that's saying something. Sainsbury's have outsourced all claim handling to a 3rd party .. CSA Ltd claim handling .. they have a 3 week turn around on literally any email exchange, so a simple 1 item clarification resets the clock .. im now at 6 weeks .. and they also tried to weasel out of the delay payment saying it wasn't delayed for 12 hours ! .. Boarding cards submitted , clock started yet again on 3 week SLA ... Sainsbury's brand image ruined for me, and will never buy their insurance for travel, car or shop in their supermarket again - Truly appalling for what should be a premium brand! Sainsbury's CEO you need to get this outsource off your books and reign in the appalling service!

It should be zero stars

It should be zero stars, but it won't offer that choice! I only wish i had read some of the reviews here before purchasing Sainsburys annual travel insurance. They say you can only judge an insurance company when you have to make a claim, well that’s where the zero stars come in! To get any regular reliable correspondence from these is at best impossible. I got asked to send three sets of information, once sent then I got asked for another batch of information [different from the first email]. These two emails took about a month to get through to me, since then “nothing”! I have sent numerous emails and have yet to have a reply, I have now given up and will never use or recommend Sainsburys travel insurance to anyone. This is the shortened version as I can’t be bothered to write everything down as it would take up too much time and space.

Had no issues claiming back

Whilst abroad I had painful toothache, after getting a quick dentist appointment I was told I needed a crown fitted. I made sure to call Sainsbury's Travel Insurance to make sure a) I was covered and b) what they needed to support a claim. After having the surgery, the dentist wrote the note detailing the issue and what I had done and I supplied this to Sainsbury's. It took around 1 month to get the money back but they paid with zero hassle. Really can't complain.

Absolute BS! Put in a claim, and I had to do submit a form via email to another insurance company which site doesn't work. I tried calling Sainsbury's bank and keep getting referred to the online portal which doesn't help at all. I now emailed them hoping to get a response. If I don't hear back about my claim in the next week I'm going to the ombudsman and small claims court

Avoid this company at all costs!

Non-existent Insurance & Abysmal Customer Service! I waited nearly two months for a response to my claim. After weeks of relentless follow-ups, I received nothing but false promises. It turns out the travel insurance offered by this company is nothing more than a waste of money and time. My flight was abruptly cancelled by the airline just a few hours before departure at 2am on a bank holiday. This left us stranded in a foreign country. Shockingly, the so-called 'cancelled flight' and 'delayed flight' policies were nothing but smoke and mirrors. Avoid this company at all costs! The combination of non-existent insurance coverage and terrible customer service is utterly unacceptable.

Very poor - AVOID Sainsbury's Bank Travel Insurance

Very poor - their Settlement Claims Agency is a scam. Bad decision on Sainsbury's Bank to ruin a trusted brand with an ineffective claims company. Email response time 6 weeks. Keep asking for the same information every time. Do me a favour, Sainsbury's Bank, and get CSA to pay up for a trip cut short because an airline cancelled flights on me at the airport. I've been waiting for 7 months. Disgusting.

Complete shambles of a renewal process... Didn't send out renewal reminder or price. I phoned and automated message said long wait and go to live chat.45 mins later they answered and sent the renewal but WITHOUT pre-existing conditions included. 45 min wait again for live chat only to be told you need to speak on the phone and RE_ENTER the pre existing....but I already gave you that last year. AND WHAT USE IS A RENEWAL QUOTE WITHOUT PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS Wasted 45 mins x 2 of my life and their staff time....and I still have not got a renewal quote ! LAUGHABLY BAD.

AVOID AT ALL COST

My daughter was stuck in Frankfurt after her flight was cancelled to Bogota with a 23hr delay - Called Sainsburys about 15 times - a nightmare to get hold of and no-one could tell us what was covered if she had to book different flight and what her options are. none of the departments could 'offer advice' on what her rights were. And apparently they only cover flights in and out of the country not the whole trip if you are getting connecting flights. How stupid is that what is the point of insurance? over 40mins to get through to the claims - gave up in the end and just changed the flights hoping for the best.

Easy refund procedure…

Took out Sainsbury’s Travel insurance and then realised I did not need it so soon. They allow you to cancel within 14 days for full refund unless insurance has been used. Process could not have been easier entered details requested and received an E mail confirmation that the refund had been accepted that same day.

Sainsburys insurance are a disgrace.

Sainsburys insurance are a disgrace. We paid for holiday cover, which included Covid and I have this in the key facts document. So when we had to cancel because my wife couldn't get out of bed I was reasurre that I had the insurance. NO! Because we cancelled the day before and the trip hadn't "started" they won't pay out, despite me calling to check before we cancelled and they said we were fine. It's just underhanded. They passed the claim to an administrator who initially asked for my bank details to make payment then inexplicably changed their minds and are now refusing to pay. Why would a massive brand like Sainsburys act like this, it does nothing for their reputation, a reputation that initially made me take out the policy in the first place. Awful, awful people. Avoid at all costs.
