CIEE Global Exchange Scholarships

washington dc students from abroad

The CIEE Work & Travel USA program provides university students the opportunity to immerse themselves in American culture by living and working in a U.S. community during their summer break.  The CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship Program – funded by CIEE and supported through generous donations from host employers – gives international students who otherwise would not be able to participate, the opportunity share this experience.

CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship participants come from countries in which cultural exchange is uncommon, and/or from countries in which there is a deficit of trust between governments or peoples. Participants themselves come from underserved populations. This includes gender, racial, ethnic, and religious minorities, as well as disabled students or those with financial limitations. Not only does this achieve important public diplomacy goals, but it also promotes vital U.S. national and economic security interests.

Program: Student program will vary in length, depending on sending country dates, university schedule, and job availability. Average program length is 12 weeks, not including the permitted travel period.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CIEE Work & Travel USA program provides university students the opportunity to experience the American way of life in a unique and exciting way during their university summer break. As a CIEE participant, students are able to work for up to four months and then, if they like, take up to 30 days to travel to the places they’ve always dreamed of.

While in the United States, participants work at non-skilled seasonal jobs, such as waiting tables in a restaurant, working in a shop as a cashier, operating rides or serving food in an amusement park, or working in a hotel or resort. Jobs range in locations across the United States, from U.S. National Parks, mountain and beach resorts and popular amusement and theme park areas. Participants with advanced-level English will have a wider variety of positions that they will be eligible to interview for, while participants with intermediate-level English will have a limited number of positions that they will be eligible for.

As a sponsor, CIEE provides visa sponsorship, pre-departure orientation information, in-country support, the required phone SEVIS registration upon arrival, as well as travel insurance coverage. At a minimum, CIEE will have monthly contact with all participants to ensure student health, safety and well-being, as well as program satisfaction. Students also have access to a 24/7 phone number, that they can use to contact CIEE in case of an emergency.

To take part in the CIEE Work & Travel USA program students at a minimum must:

  • Be between 18 and 30 years old
  • Be registered as a full-time student at a university or other institution of post-secondary education. The degree/diploma course in which students are registered must be at least two years in duration. Students in post-graduate courses that are less than two years (i.e. masters courses), are also eligible
  • Be able to successfully interact in an English-speaking environment, have sufficient English proficiency to navigate daily life, read and comprehend materials, and know how to obtain assistance when necessary
  • Demonstrate an interest in engaging with U.S. culture and communities

For additional details around the CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship selection and eligibility, please see the review criteria.

The CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship program is seeking candidates who represent the qualities and/or populations in their home country as described below.

Financial need – candidate should have a socioeconomic status where a scholarship enables participation (for example low-income families)

Underserved population – candidate should represent an underserved population in their country (for example racial, ethnic, gender or religious minorities, disabled students, etc.)

Global perspective – candidates should be eager to enhance their social abilities and leadership qualities while also willing to reach across cultures to build their skills as global citizens

Selection notes: Ideal candidates must be independent, mature, flexible, communicative, and ready to engage with the new environment. Candidates must also be responsible, responsive, and flexible on host employer job type and location. While the CIEE Work & Travel USA program does provide an excellent opportunity for students to improve their English skills, students seeking solely academic experiences may not be the strongest fit for this program. Students nominated for the CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship can also be high achievers academically, and this program gives them a chance to focus on social and cultural skills to enhance their global perspective.

For the 2020 winter season, CIEE is delighted to offer Exchange Scholarships for students who would not otherwise be able to participate in this important cultural exchange. Scholarship award coverage will vary based upon criteria selection and funding. The scholarships will cover some or all of the following fees. Please reach out to [email protected] to learn more about available funding.

  • CIEE Work & Travel USA program fee
  • Job placement fee
  • Travel insurance
  • Required SEVIS U.S. immigration fee
  • U.S. visa application fee
  • Round trip transportation costs to their host employment site
  • An stipend to cover travel incidentals and expenses upon arrival to the United States and before their first paycheck

For scholarship consideration, each candidate must fully complete and submit the online CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship Nomination form including required attachments (passport scan and resume/CV) and signature. Please contact [email protected] for more details around the nomination process.

Students can expect to undertake non-skilled work in a seasonal environment. Typical seasonal job types include front desk clerk, sales associate, server, host, ride attendant, and resort worker. Students may work at a U.S. National Park, a mountain or beach resort area, or a popular amusement/theme park in a variety of U.S. states. Students with stronger English skills will be eligible for a wider variety of positions. Students should expect to work an average of 30 hours per week.

Students receive a thorough CIEE job profile outlining host employer job duties and pay rate, transportation options, housing details, and local area information. Students should familiarize themselves with their job profile information and feel confident that they are prepared to succeed and participate in all duties required of their position and commit to an entire season at that location. Students will then undertake interview for their jobs with either a CIEE representative or host employer. CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship students will also have specific support contacts at CIEE during their program and housing support through their host employer.

CIEE works to match student job interest, English proficiency, and availability (Department of State permitted work dates and university break dates) with available host employer jobs. CIEE staff will discuss program expectations to ensure that students are prepared to succeed in their roles in the U.S. While students’ location and job type preferences will be taken into consideration, students should remain flexible in accepting their offered interview placement as positions are limited to host employer availability.

Once students pass their interview and are hired by a U.S. host employer, CIEE will finalize their job placement and process their DS 2019 forms. These forms will be shipped to the local embassy and students will then apply for visa interview appointments. Upon receipt of visa approval, CIEE will confirm travel dates with students and arrange travel to the U.S. Once students are hired, they will also be in touch with their host employer directly to discuss housing and arrival details.

Yes, CIEE Access Scholars will be required, as a part of their scholarship, to submit an essay or video six months after their program completion. The CIEE Work & Travel USA program is a public diplomacy initiative that promotes cultural exchange and positively impacts tens of thousands of international students each year. By connecting and engaging with Work & Travel USA participants post program, we can collect their stories that demonstrate and highlight the positive benefits of their program participation.

Cultural exchanges are at the forefront of our programs and we offer programming that complements and expands the cultural focus of Summer Work and Travel to offer participants a more comprehensive experience in the United States. We truly believe that we can create meaningful experiences for participants and help them to become engaged global citizens. CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship students will also have opportunities to connect with each other on social media platforms like Facebook. Here they will find resources and information about their program.

Civic Leadership Summit Work & Travel USA participants selected to attend the Civic Leadership Summit are awarded an expenses-paid conference in Washington, DC during their programs. Selected Fellows participate in events and activities focusing on intercultural awareness, civics, and social entrepreneurship. Our goal is to empower Fellows to become leaders and changemakers in their home countries and communities upon their return from the program. CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship participants will be encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity!

Connect USA This series of nearly 40 regional events are open to over 8,500 of our Work & Travel USA participants hosted across the country. CIEE Global Exchange Scholarship participants will receive invitations and will be encouraged to participate in these local events near their employer sites.

Culture Guide USA Each month all Work & Travel USA participants receive monthly newsletters that provide information on local attractions through customized Top 10 Things to Do e-mails. We want to provide all of our Work & Travel USA participants the encouragement necessary to experience the summer of a lifetime and learn as much as possible about life in the U.S.

employee skiing in usa

I found myself surrounded by a multiplicity of cultures, attitudes, languages, discovering other perspectives in life and trying new things that I am not used to, and that made me dedicate my time – with a culturally diverse community – to build very special bonds and lifelong relationships, and also to represent my community and deliver goodwill.

Eya, from Tunisia

This program means a lot to me since it’s my first time to travel and meet people from different backgrounds. This opportunity made me realize how important it is to accept the differences between people in order to make the world better place for all of us.

Ahmed, from Gaza

We come from different countries, culture, belief and background but that didn't stop us from making a strong bond. Now we face-time every single day (in English!) because we miss each other a lot I didn't expect to make such amazing friendship.

Kenzer, from Nicaragua

CIEE Work & Travel USA has helped me learn from the people I worked with. I realized that for one to succeed you need to put great value on every person you work with and respect them. This experience has also taught me that we can all co-exist in harmony if we looked beyond our regional, racial or religious affiliations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is included in the cost of my program?

The program fee that you paid for your program includes your SEVIS payment, your mandatory health insurance, your orientation and program materials, 24 hour emergency support services, initial job placement, your signed work agreement from your employer, courier fee of documents to your home country and the administrative fees to process your DS-2019 form. Your program also includes the monthly check in email from your sponsor verifying that your program is on track and you are receiving a satisfactory experience.

There may be additional fees charged by your Foreign Partner Agent (if applicable) and may include a registration fees, application fee, interview/screening fee, English Eligibility tests, translation of school documents, etc. and other documents as necessary/required.

Can I stay longer than the 30 extra travel days?

No. You are allowed up to 30 days from the end date on your DS-2019 form for travel purposes only. You are also required to purchase an insurance extension before you begin your travel period. Working during the 30 day travel period is STRICTLY prohibited. You are not allowed to miss the start of your university classes according to your university’s official academic start date which may result in travel days that are less than 30 days. Your university cannot grant you generous leave to avoid this regulation. This is strictly prohibited. Not returning to your home/ school country on time may result in problems obtaining future visas to the U.S.

How much money do I need to bring to the U.S.?

Typically, after you begin working there is a one to two week waiting period before you will receive your first paycheck. This waiting period will vary by employer, so be sure to ask how long you will have to wait to begin receiving paychecks. Some employers will let you begin working before you receive your Social Security number and some will not. These are questions to ask your employer before you depart for the U.S. It is your responsibility to bring enough personal funds with you to the U.S. in order to pay for your housing deposits, rent, food and other expenses. GEC will not loan money to you or make these payments for you. You are required to bring at least $1000 USD with you. Depending on the cost of your housing deposit, rent, food and the time it will take to receive your first paycheck, you may need more than $1000. We suggest you bring $1500. We recommend you bring an international credit card. Most places in the U.S accept Visa and MasterCard. USD travelers checks are accepted at most businesses as well.

Can GEC extend my visa?

No. GEC cannot extend your program after you have arrived in the U.S. Your visa was approved by the U.S. embassy in your home country based on the official summer vacation dates of your university and your original vetted job offer. Program extensions are not granted even if you have a new job offer that allows you to work longer than what was offered to you in your original work agreement. This means you may have a shorter J-1 Work and Travel program than the 4 months allowed by law.

I'm not interested in cultural activities. Is it okay if I don't participate in them?

No. The purpose of your program is for cultural exchange. You must participate in cultural activities while in the U.S. Cultural activities can include touring the city where you are living, visiting museums, attending a U.S. sporting event, visiting amusement/ theme parks, attending a concert, and many, many other activities. If you are having difficulty with cultural activity ideas, please contact GEC for assistance.

What is program sponsorship termination?

GEC is your J-1 visa sponsor. You must have a sponsor for the entire time you are in the U.S. under the J-1 visa program. If you violate the terms and conditions and the regulations of your program (not validating your program, not reporting to your employer, not updating your address within 10 days of any change, not answering your monthly monitoring questionnaires, working at a second or replacement job without GEC’s written permission, etc.), your program sponsorship will be terminated. Termination means that you no longer have a sponsor in the United States, and you are required to make immediate arrangements to leave the U.S. and return home. Your SEVIS record will be marked accordingly. Program termination has a serious negative impact on your record and may affect future return visits to the U.S. Don’t let this happen to you. Comply with the terms and conditions and regulations of your program.

Why does GEC need to contact me monthly?

Regulations state that sponsors MUST maintain MONTHLY contact with all sponsored students for the program duration. We will send monthly email reminders to you requesting that you log into your GEC record and confirm your reported SEVIS address, seek input from you regarding your work opportunity, and will ask for feedback in regards to your health and safety. It is your REQUIREMENT to complete these monthly monitoring questionnaires. If no response is received by us, we will attempt to contact you by phone, through your employer, through your Foreign Partner Agent (if applicable), or as a last result, through your Emergency Contact listed on your application. Failure to respond to these monthly monitoring requirements WILL result in the termination of your program. Your health, safety and well being are of our highest concern and that of the U.S. Department of State thus the reason for the implementation of this regulation.

Jobs & Work Abroad Programs

Browse international jobs and find the position for you..

Work abroad programs are a great way to earn more than just money. The list of advantages is practically endless: broadened horizons, new skills, improved independence, new friendships (and business relations), a new language added to your repertoire, and a boost to take your career dreams to the next level. You’ll be having so much fun overcoming new challenges and having new experiences that your job abroad won’t even feel like work; rather, it’ll be like one crazy (paid!) adventure.

So how do you even get a job abroad ? Well, you’ll want to start by finding the destinations where you can legally work abroad and then start your job search. Or, you can find a job that allows you to work abroad, and they will often sponsor your work visa.

You can also get a job overseas with no experience ! In fact, teaching English abroad is the perfect job in that particular scenario. However, if teaching isn’t your true calling, you can either apply for international positions while still at home, or apply for a work visa abroad and figure things out once you arrive.

Here’s how to get a job abroad:

  • Choose a destination. Places like Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland grant Working Holiday Visas to citizens of certain countries and who meet an age requirement. If you want to work abroad for a year or permanently, then you’ll want to secure a job offer prior to applying for work visas abroad.
  • Choose your field. Sometimes, it’s easier to figure out what kind of job you want prior to choosing the destination. The demand for certain positions is higher in some countries than others, which will make your job search a lot easier (or more challenging).
  • Apply to open job opportunities. Once you know where you want to go and what kind of job you want overseas, then it’s time to start applying to work abroad programs! The length of this process will vary depending on your qualifications and prior experience, and perhaps even your proficiency in the local language.
  • Apply for a work visa. Once you find your job, then you can apply for a work visa. Most likely, you’ll need to show proof of a job offer in order to qualify. There should be someone at your new workplace who is in charge of assisting you with planning your trip abroad.

The best types of jobs abroad depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Do you want to only work for room and board? WWOOFING is for you. Are you okay with working odd jobs here and there in order to fund your travels around the world? You can find short term and seasonal work on orchards, vineyards, and farms in countries like Australia and New Zealand. Or, if you want to start a permanent career abroad, nurses, program developers, software engineers, marketers, and teachers are needed all over the world.

Your options for working abroad will depend on your nationality. You’ll want to find the easiest countries to get a work visa for citizens of your home country, since the process of applying for work visas can be drawn out and complicated. For Americans, it’s exceptionally easy to get short term work visas in New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. However, as previously mentioned, you can get sponsored for work visas almost anywhere as long as you have a valid job offer beforehand.

There are lots of reasons for working overseas ! Perhaps the earning potential is much higher in a country abroad than at home. Or maybe there are better job opportunities overseas in your chosen field. Or maybe, like so many of us, you just really want to be able to live abroad sustainably! Being able to work abroad means being able to travel and immerse in new cultures indefinitely—and that sounds like a dream come true to us.

14 things to know about Global Entry

Caroline Tanner

Editor's Note

If you're a frequent international traveler, you've likely come to depend on Global Entry as a way to return to the U.S. without waiting in the often-long U.S. Customs and Border Protection line.

Global Entry can help you clear customs in minutes. If you depart from one of 15 preclearance locations , you can even clear it before physically reentering the U.S.

Becoming a Global Entry member can take time due to the difficulty of securing an in-person appointment . However, enrolling in the program is still worthwhile. Although it launched over a decade ago, it's evolved, especially since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

Here's what to know about applying for or renewing Global Entry , including how to get application fees reimbursed , what to expect during the interview process , how to use it and how to deal with potential delays.

Using credit cards to get Global Entry for free

global work and travel usa

Though CBP charges a $100 nonrefundable application fee for a five-year membership, many credit cards reimburse these fees by issuing a credit every four years. If you have more credits than you need, you can also use credits to cover memberships for friends and family members.

A variety of low-annual-fee and premium cards offer this benefit, including:

  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card ($95 annual fee; see rates and fees )
  • United℠ Explorer Card ($0 introductory annual fee, then $95)
  • Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card ($95 annual fee)
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® ($550 annual fee)
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® ($595 annual fee; see rates and fees )
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express ($695 annual fee; see rates and fees )
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express ($695 annual fee; see rates and fees )

Most credit cards that offer an application fee waiver also allow you to cover a Global Entry membership for someone else. So, if you have an unused Global Entry credit on your Amex Platinum, you could charge another person's Global Entry fee to your card to reimburse the purchase.

Tips for getting a Global Entry interview appointment

Once you apply and get conditionally approved for Global Entry, you must schedule an interview appointment; this process has been delayed over the past few years due to an application backlog .

For example, after being conditionally approved, it took me four months to secure an interview at my home airport.

After you're conditionally approved, log in to your Trusted Traveler Program dashboard to schedule an in-person interview at an enrollment center.

What to expect during your Global Entry interview

global work and travel usa

For your interview, you'll need a valid passport(s) or permanent resident card and proof of residency, such as a driver's license with your current address, a mortgage statement or a recent utility bill.

The interview should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes. During it, you'll be asked a few questions verifying your identity and related to your application, including your recent travel history. The final step is to give your fingerprints and take a photo.

You should receive your Global Entry card and Known Traveler Number seven to 10 days after your interview. Use this KTN for both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck since Global Entry includes membership to TSA PreCheck .

Activate your card within 30 days of receiving it, although CBP says you don't need your physical card to pass through Global Entry kiosks at the airport.

How to use the Global Entry kiosk

Once approved, using the Global Entry lane to reenter the country should be relatively easy, though the kiosk works differently based on location.

Historically, you would use your fingerprints, answer questions, take a photo and then hand the printout you receive to a CBP officer.

However, in some locations, that process has evolved to where you don't do much of anything other than let the machine scan your face in a paperless Global Entry process .

Very young children may be too squirmy to scan reliable fingerprints. In this case, you might receive a crossed-out printout to show to the CBP officer.

Enjoying TSA PreCheck as a perk of Global Entry

global work and travel usa

As mentioned, a five-year membership to Global Entry also includes five years of access to TSA PreCheck as long as you add your KTN to your airline reservations when booking. You can also add it when checking in for your flight online or at the airport.

Though I've never been denied TSA PreCheck, it is not 100% guaranteed for every flight. In any case, you should have TSA PreCheck almost all the time you have Global Entry. Just make sure that the name matches the name on the ticket and that you've entered your membership numbers into your ticket purchase or frequent flyer account(s).

US citizenship isn't required to use Global Entry

Global Entry is available to non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents . Citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Bahrain, India, Colombia, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Panama, South Korea, Switzerland, Singapore, Taiwan and Mexico can apply.

Canadian citizens and residents are also eligible through the Nexus program , which provides prescreened travelers with expedited processing services when entering the U.S. and Canada by plane, car or boat. It also provides access to Global Entry kiosks when arriving via one of eight Canadian preclearance airports in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Alberta.

If you're a U.S. citizen who visits Canada often and is contemplating Global Entry, consider getting Nexus for expedited customs when entering Canada. Clearing Canadian customs and immigration can take a while, especially at certain airports. Once you have Nexus (as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident), you also get Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.

Nexus is half the cost of Global Entry ($50 per adult and free for children younger than 18). To enroll in the program, you must go to an enrollment center along the Canadian border.

For more information about how citizens from other countries can apply for and get approved for Global Entry, see the requirements and information from CBP . For example, the application process for U.K. citizens involves registering through the U.K. government and paying a fee of 42 euros before applying through the U.S. Trusted Traveler Programs website and paying a $100 fee to the U.S. government.

Completing your Global Entry upon arrival is possible

global work and travel usa

If you can't find an interview or would prefer to make the process more seamless, you can try enrolling on arrival upon returning to the U.S. from an international trip. The service allows conditionally approved applicants to avoid a formal interview at an enrollment center to finalize their applications; they can instead complete the enrollment at the airport.

This service is currently available at more than 50 airports globally . To enroll on arrival, you need your U.S. passport (which you'll already have if returning to the U.S. from abroad). Also, verify if any other proof-of-residency documents, such as mortgage statements and rent stubs, are needed to complete the interview. A full list of accepted support documents is available on the CBP website .

If open, this service allows you to complete your Global Entry enrollment interview as part of the immigration process when arriving at the airport after an international trip. To do this, plan to follow signs in the airport for the "Enrollment on Arrival" lanes — and be sure your flight arrives during hours when interviews are offered.

A CBP agent will complete your Global Entry interview during your admissibility inspection. If you don't see any signs for this, ask a CBP agent.

Completing your Global Entry upon departure is now an option

As of February , conditionally approved applicants can complete the interview process for Global Entry in Dulles International Airport (IAD) when departing on international flights.

Enrollment on departure is available daily at Gate B41 in Terminal B from noon to 8 p.m. for travelers at IAD who have been conditionally approved for Global Entry.

Global Entry renewal delays are common

A Global Entry membership lasts five years and expires on your birthday that fifth year. To keep using it, you must renew it before the expiration date noted on your card.

Members have experienced excessive delays associated with renewals dating back to mid-2018, but there are additional delays post-2020.

Aim to renew your membership well before it expires to avoid any delays.

Because of the delays, CBP has extended the time you can use your benefits after your Global Entry membership expires to two years. However, you must submit your renewal application before your membership expires to qualify for this grace period.

Families must separately enroll kids for Global Entry

Parents can't bring their babies or children through the Global Entry kiosks with them unless they are separately enrolled in the program; this means you'll have to pay the $100 enrollment fee for each child. You must also schedule and attend an interview with your minor, even for babies who can't talk.

However, TSA PreCheck benefits extend to children in your family who are up to 12 years old, so you can all use the expedited lane together when traveling domestically.

Families can use Mobile Passport to create additional profiles for family members, and up to four people can submit a single customs declaration form. If your family doesn't leave the country often, that may suit your needs better than Global Entry.

Extra fees aren't required for children who apply for Nexus (and, by extension, Global Entry) with their parents or for children linked to the parent's SENTRI profile. SENTRI allows expedited passage into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico via SENTRI-specific lanes but also grants access to TSA PreCheck lanes at airports within the U.S. and overseas territories.

You can update your Global Entry when you get a new passport

If you get a new passport, you can update your Global Entry profile to match your new passport by logging in to your TTP account and finding the section marked "Update Documents." Once you pull up the documents section, enter your new passport number to attach it to your Global Entry membership.

Should you have a name or immigration status change, you must go to a Global Entry enrollment center to process that change, but appointments aren't necessary to complete these changes. Show up with the necessary documentation confirming the change and give the reason for your visit to a CBP agent. They'll process the change during your visit.

If you have two U.S. passports , you must change the number in your profile to match the passport you're using for international travel.

Global Entry cards are considered valid federal IDs

global work and travel usa

You don't need to travel with your Global Entry card to use the Global Entry kiosks when arriving at U.S. airports. However, it is a valid form of identification that can serve as a legal alternative ID if you lose your driver's license or state ID.

There are certain times — such as flying to the U.S. from Canada or arriving in the U.S. through a cruise ship port, including Port Everglades — when you may need to show your Global Entry card to access those lanes. The card can also come in handy for travelers who live in a state where the driver's license is not Real ID compliant , as it can serve as an alternative form of valid ID at the airport.

TSA PreCheck cannot be upgraded to Global Entry

If you already have TSA PreCheck and want to enroll in Global Entry, you'll still have to go through the normal enrollment process since you cannot upgrade a TSA PreCheck membership.

Should you need help deciding between the two, consider how often you travel abroad. If you frequently head overseas, you would benefit from paying the extra $15 (TSA PreCheck costs $85) to get the perks of Global Entry membership.

Is Global Entry worth it?

Global Entry can help you avoid long wait times when returning from an international trip.

Although it costs $100 and requires an in-person interview, signing up for Global Entry will likely save you time if you are a frequent international traveler.

U.S. Seeks to Join Forces With Europe to Combat Excess Chinese Goods

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen warned that China’s industrial strategy posed a global threat that requires a united response.

  • Share full article

A close-up shot of Janet Yellen during a hearing.

By Alan Rappeport and Liz Alderman

Alan Rappeport is traveling with Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen in Germany and Italy this week. Liz Alderman is the chief European business correspondent.

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said on Tuesday that the United States and Europe needed to work together to push back against China’s excess industrial capacity, warning that a wave of cheap Chinese exports represents a grave threat to the global economy.

Ms. Yellen’s remarks, delivered during a speech in Germany, highlighted what is expected to be a central topic of discussion when the Group of 7 finance ministers meet in Italy this week.

“China’s industrial policy may seem remote as we sit here in this room, but if we do not respond strategically and in a united way, the viability of businesses in both our countries and around the world could be at risk,” Ms. Yellen said at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, where she received an honorary doctoral degree.

China’s excessive production of green energy technology has become a pressing trans-Atlantic concern in recent months. Officials in President Biden’s administration have grown increasingly worried that his efforts to finance domestic manufacturing of clean energy and other next-generation technologies will be undercut by China, which is churning out steel, electric cars and solar panels at a rapid clip.

The Biden administration is now looking to Europe to help the developed world prevent the kind of China shock of the early 2000s, which helped decimate manufacturing in exchange for cheap goods. Last week, Mr. Biden increased tariffs on some Chinese imports, including levying a 100 percent tax on electric vehicles. He also formally left in place levies on more than $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that President Donald J. Trump had imposed.

The United States hopes that a united front will convince China that its largest trading partners are prepared to erect trade barriers that will prevent Chinese electric vehicles, batteries and panels from dominating Western markets.

Ms. Yellen emphasized on Tuesday that the United States was not trying to carry out an anti-China policy, but said China’s actions posed a threat to the global economy that warranted a coordinated response.

She pointed to China’s push to dominate clean energy technology and other sectors, saying that ambition “could also prevent countries around the world, including emerging markets, from building the industries that could power their growth.”

The trend toward protectionist policies is likely to become another point of contention between China and the world’s most advanced economies. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, derided Mr. Biden’s decision to impose new tariffs on Chinese goods last week as a “political maneuver.”

“We hope the U.S. can take a positive view of China’s development and stop using overcapacity as an excuse for trade protectionism,” Mr. Liu said.

The new U.S. tariffs could put additional pressure on Europe to erect trade barriers of its own to prevent China from redirecting more of its exports there. Europe’s officials are already considering additional levies on Chinese cars, which pose a particular threat to Germany.

About 37 percent of all electric vehicle imports to Europe are produced in China, including Chinese brands and ones made by Tesla and German automakers with plants there. Europe is the world’s second-biggest E.V. market, and imports there skyrocketed last year to $11.5 billion, from $1.6 billion in 2020.

The European Commission is investigating whether Chinese state subsidies intended to help the country’s companies make cheap cars are damaging Europe’s auto industry. The sector provides nearly 14 million direct and indirect jobs in Europe, and the six million cars that it exported last year generated a trade surplus of more than 100 billion euros.

Europe’s investigation could result in preliminary duties on Chinese electric vehicle imports as soon as July, though any tariffs are likely to be far lower than the 100 percent imposed by the Biden administration. But unlike Europe, which is already importing cars from China, the United States has erected several barriers to prevent Chinese E.V.s from coming to its shores.

Europe’s investigation into China’s subsidies and whether they merit tariffs has aggravated a political divide. Some countries, such as Germany, which is Europe’s biggest maker of electric cars, have been against an investigation. German officials are wary of pressing penalties that might incite Beijing to shut out German carmakers such as BMW and Volkswagen.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a speech in Stockholm last week, “We should not forget: European manufacturers, and also some American ones, are successful on the Chinese market and also sell a lot of vehicles that are produced in Europe to China.” He added that at least half of electric vehicles imported to Europe from China were Western brands.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, has been pushing for “de-risking” Europe’s relationship with China. Her approach is backed by President Emmanuel Macron of France, who hosted his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this month and has urged Brussels to step up protection against what his administration sees as unfair Chinese competition.

The Brussels investigation has focused less on whether China is dumping large numbers of cars into Europe and more on how subsidies have allowed E.V.s made by BYD, Geely and SAIC, the three biggest Chinese E.V. makers, to offer cut-rate prices. The Chinese government has criticized the European Union for not investigating Western brands with factories in China — including Tesla, which exports more E.V.s from China to the European Union than any other producer.

The Rhodium Group , an independent think tank that focuses on China, said that to compensate for Chinese state subsidies, the European Commission would have to impose duties of up to 50 percent on Chinese E.V.s. But the group suggested that such a move would be unlikely in Europe unless officials took a more “drastic” review of World Trade Organization rules, and suggested that tariff rates of 15 to 30 percent were more realistic.

In the meantime, Chinese electric vehicle makers, including BYD and Great Wall Motor, are setting up factories in Hungary to build cars that would be viewed as European-made products, which could raise trade issues eventually with the United States.

The Biden administration is watching with similar concern as Chinese car companies invest in factories in Mexico, which could potentially be used to enter the U.S. market.

Following her speech, Ms. Yellen told reporters that the United States and countries in Europe have different concerns when it comes to commerce with China and, as a result, they could use different tools to address them. But she added that because many of the concerns about China’s heavy subsidization of exports are broadly shared, it is “more forceful to communicate to China as a group.”

The approach by the United States and Europe to work together to confront China does pose the risk of retaliation, inflaming trade tensions that could weigh on the world economy. Chinese officials said last week that they would respond to the new trade measures imposed by the United States.

In an interview with The New York Times this week, Ms. Yellen argued that the new U.S. tariffs were targeted and that she did not believe that China wanted to escalate tensions.

“I anticipate some response on China’s part, but my hope is that it’s moderate and proportional,” Ms. Yellen said.

U.s. travel joins rep. joyce for “travel works” power hour in gettysburg.

Roundtable with travel, business leaders underscores travel’s essential contributions to local region

PRESS RELEASE May 29, 2024

GETTYSBURG, PA -

The U.S. Travel Association conducted a “ Travel Works for America ” Power Hour with U.S. Congressman John Joyce and more than 20 Gettysburg travel and business leaders on Tuesday, May 28, demonstrating the tangible impact that travel has on the local region and businesses.

“Travel is essential to the global competitiveness of the U.S. and is critically important to communities like Gettysburg, which rely on travel to power the economy and workforce,” said Tori Emerson Barnes, U.S. Travel Executive Vice President for Public Affairs and Policy. “We appreciate the opportunity to join Congressman Joyce for a discussion on how Congress can further support the growth of travel to his district and throughout the United States, as well as the leadership of Destination Gettysburg, who were instrumental in bringing us together.”

“Destination Gettysburg was proud to host Congressman John Joyce for an important conversation with our leading tourism stakeholders. Tourism is a vital industry in Gettysburg and Adams County, annually attracting over 3 million visitors, generating more than $735 million in visitor spending, and creating approximately 5,000 jobs,” said Karl Pietrzak, President and CEO of Destination Gettysburg. “Through Congressman Joyce’s efforts, our region benefits from federal support of local tourism, ensuring continued investment in this essential industry.”

Tuesday’s Power Hour agenda included discussion of critical topics such as the need to lower wait times for U.S. visitor visas – especially for first-time applicants, which exceeds over 400 days on average in key markets – as well as reducing wait times for travelers at U.S. Customs at gateway airports.

Participants also discussed the need to permanently expand the H-2B worker visa program, especially in support of the small and seasonal businesses that depend on temporary workers; the benefits to travelers of innovative facial identity verification technology at TSA airport checkpoints; full funding for the new Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Travel and Tourism at the U.S. Department of Commerce; and the importance of Brand USA, the official destination marketing organization for the United States.

The hour-long discussion was followed by a tour for the congressman and participants of the Mansion House 1757, where the Travel Works Power Hour roundtable was held.

U.S. Travel Association is the national, non-profit organization representing the $1.3 trillion travel industry, an essential contributor to our nation's economy and success. U.S. Travel produces programs and insights and advocates for policies to increase travel to and within the United States. Visit ustravel.org for more information.

GameStop shares have surged after a Reddit account that drove the 2021 meme stock mania shared its position in the video game retailer.

The chain's shares were 90% higher at $46 each as of 9.11am after Keith Gill, who goes by DeepF------Value on Reddit and Roaring Kitty on YouTube and X, reappeared online on Sunday night.

He posted a screenshot of what appeared to be his portfolio holding a significant amount of GameStop common shares and call options.

Reminder: A call option is basically a contract which allows a buyer to purchase stock at a specific price until a certain date.

The Reddit trading crowd's favourite trader holds five million shares of GameStop worth $115.7m as of Friday's closing price, according to the account screenshot.

The account also showed a position of 120,000 call options in GameStop with a strike price of $20 that expire on 21 June that were purchased for about $5.68 each.

GameStop shares closed Friday at $23.14.

Mr Gill's first return to social media three weeks ago sparked an eye-popping rally in GameStop with shares more than doubling in May alone.

At the time, he simply posted a picture of a man in a chair leaning forward, but that was enough to trigger a buying frenzy among amateur traders.

The investor was a former marketer for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance.

In 2021, through YouTube videos and Reddit posts, he encouraged a band of retail traders to squeeze out short selling hedge funds in GameStop.

The action got so wild at one point that brokers had to restrict trading in the stock as it blew up their clearing house margin.

By Katie Williams , Money team

We've all learned how to be more conservative with our money amid an increase in the cost of living - but it's still important to treat ourselves now and again.

And there's some science behind that happy feeling you get when you make a new purchase, as  consumer psychologist Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd  explains in the first of four features on the psychology of shopping running this week.

What happens to our brains?

When we buy something, our brain releases endorphins and dopamine. Such a release can give us a sense of pleasure, albeit momentarily, Dr Jansson-Boyd says.

You might be more likely to continue buying things if you think that temporary feeling of pleasure is important, she adds, though she notes for some even just the experience of shopping can trigger the dopamine, without anything being bought.

Buying sale items increases dopamine

Dr Jansson-Boyd says purchasing items at a reduced price can increase your dopamine level.

When shoppers see a product they like with a price they perceive as "fair", they experience a level of satisfaction in the part of the brain associated with the anticipation of pleasure, she explains.

However, if the price is perceived as "unfair", the insula - a part of the brain that registers pain - is typically activated.

The negative impact of dopamine

It's also important to note dopamine can have negative influence on spending behaviours, Dr Jansson-Boyd says.

For example, when buying chocolates, the release of dopamine generates what can be thought of as a reward-seeking loop.

This means that a person experiences repeated craving of a dopamine rush and repeatedly buys chocolates to experience the dopamine rush. This can lead to unwanted spending.

"As you can imagine, such 'craving' can also lead to fairly serious consequences if the spending is done on gambling or drugs," she adds.

So are there 'healthier' alternatives to get that release?

As Dr Jansson-Boyd mentioned previously, window shopping can trigger a surge of dopamine without you needing to buy anything.

Other non-shopping activities such as eating healthily and listening to your favourite music can also trigger a similar release, she says.

Can you get out of chasing the dopamine rush?

Being aware is a good start, says Dr Jansson-Boyd, as it may "put the brakes on the shopping".

But she notes that if the chasing of dopamine becomes an obsession, then seeking professional help is best as the consequences can be "serious".

"However, if it is not of a serious nature then training yourself to think pragmatically about the shopping helps.

"For example, if you find that you are keen on 'special offers', then make sure you are equipped with information about whether you are getting a genuine bargain," she says.

She also recommends taking a step back, going for a cup of tea or visiting another shop every time you see something you want to buy.

Dr Jansson-Boyd says: "If you still want to go back to the item, perhaps you really do want it. However, in many cases you will find that you forget about it entirely or that you are not that fussed."

I purchased two pairs of shorts from Nike a year ago. I shortly after returned them for a refund as they didn't suit me. Nike are saying I can't be refunded due to them not receiving the returned items. Even though I have supplied the Royal Mail proof of postage. Lee F

Scott Dixon, from The Complaints Resolver , says Lee is very unlikely to get a positive outcome in this case.

"The problem is that you have left it so long to resolve the issue. It's highly unlikely (virtually impossible) this can be resolved for that reason - you cannot leave a complaint on missing goods in transit for a year and expect a remedy."

Though there's unlikely to be a positive resolution here, delivery issues are common – so Scott has walked us through people's basic rights when things go missing…

Your contract is always with the retailer, not the courier firm, to ensure that your order is safely delivered, says Scott. If it hasn't turned up, the first thing you need to do is to contact the retailer.

"It is their legal responsibility to make sure the item is safely delivered to you under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. They should contact the courier – who they've entered a contract with - and let you know what has happened to your item.

"S29 (2) of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 states the goods remain at the trader's risk until they come into the physical possession of the consumer, or a person identified by the consumer, to take possession of the goods."

The retailer can either refund you or rearrange for the goods to be delivered, says Scott.

If this doesn't work, raise a chargeback with your bank or credit card provider within 120 days of your purchase or payment to get a refund.

"You need to push hard on chargebacks and cite 'breach of contract' under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, as chargebacks are often rejected on the first attempt," says Scott.

"Your bank or credit card provider will reverse the payment and give the retailer an opportunity to present their case.

"Retailers don't like dealing with chargebacks as they are problematic and costly to resolve."

What if you leave delivery instructions?

This could see you lose all rights.

Scott explains: "If you give specific instructions to the retailer for the item to be left in the porch, 'leave in shed at rear' or another designated safe place, and it is stolen, then you are responsible because the retailer and courier have simply followed your instructions."

You have a 14-day cooling off period for all non-bespoke items under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Scott says: "A retailer will usually provide a returns label or a website link to their returns policy, and give instructions for you to return goods. Usually a retailer will engage a courier firm for returns - be it Royal Mail, DHL etc etc."

This often involves dropping the item off at a local convenience store, where labels are scanned.

"Convenience stores often say you will get a receipt by email. This isn't always the case, leaving you high and dry if the goods go missing in transit," warns Scott.

To protect yourself, Scott says you should follow the policy courier firms use when they deliver goods to you: take a photo of the goods at the point of handover and insist on a receipt.

"This is your proof if you need to dispute lost goods in transit," he says.

"The retailer will push back in these cases when goods are lost in transit with a fob off saying it's not their fault and the responsibility lies with the courier, which is blatantly untrue."

Scott says the retailer engaged the courier firm to safely return the goods and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies.

"Remember, your contract is with the retailer – you're following their return instructions. So this is on them.

"You need to push hard on this and cite 'breach of contract' under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to get a full refund.

"If you hit a brick wall, simply raise a chargeback with your bank or credit card provider and cite 'breach of contract' under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to dispute the transaction."

As a last resort you can take your case to the Small Claims Court in England and Wales - or use the respective legal routes in Scotland and Northern Ireland .

What if a company doesn't provide specific returns instructions?

Your contract is then with the courier - but much of the above still applies with them. S49 Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that every contract to supply a service is to be treated as including a term that the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill.

Interest rates are likely to be cut in the eurozone this week despite inflation accelerating in May.

The European Central Bank is expected to move on Thursday, before both the US Fed and the Bank of England.

The decision is important for mortgage holders and savers - and potentially holidaymakers - in the UK because the country doesn't exist in an economic bubble.

Markets currently expect the BoE to wait until August or September - but what happens on Thursday could shift that.

Laith Khalaf, head of investment analysis at AJ Bell, explained earlier this year: "There is some safety in numbers for central banks, because of the exchange rate effects of pulling away from the herd. Cutting rates too far ahead of others can lead to currency weakness, and additional inflationary pressure as a result.

"Leaving it too late can do unnecessary financial damage to the domestic economy."

As Mr Khalaf suggests, if the BoE doesn't quickly follow it may be good for UK holidaymakers, who could find their pound buys more should the euro endure a period of weakness.

The main ECB rate is currently 4% - and a cut is still widely anticipated despite inflation accelerating from 2.4% to 2.6% last month.

ECB officials have warned of an uneven path back to the target of 2% inflation.

Interest rates are kept high to encourage saving over spending - when this happens, price rises tend to slow.

In the UK, the base rate has been kept at a 16-year high of 5.25% since last autumn - though inflation is now at 2.3%, within touching distance of target.

The next rate decision here is on 20 June.

If there is a surprise in Frankfurt this week, it would likely have a negative impact on the market and perhaps set back expectations of a BoE cut.

Shoppers at Shein are being warned of a new phishing scam that threatens their personal information and money.

The scam sees customers receive an email that offers them a Shein mystery box and encourages them click on a link to claim their prize.

However, clicking on the link takes users to a fake site which allows cyber criminals to gain access to personal details.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, has warned shoppers: "Whilst Shein does offer legitimate mystery boxes during promotions or special events, the way to know if they are legitimate is to recognise the website you are directed to.

"The website you are directed to by scammers mimics Shein's, and the obvious way to indicate this is the URL, which is different from the official website."

How can you spot a fake Shein website?

  • The domain name for Shein is shein.com and any variations to this should be considered untrustworthy. You should also make sure the site has "https" URLs and lock icons;
  • Check for a legitimate contact page with company addresses, customer service numbers and employee information;
  • Search for online reviews of the website from a trusted independent source;
  • Pay attention to images edited poorly as Shein uses professional photography for all of its products;
  • Be cautious of prices that seem more than 50% lower than Shein's real pricing;
  • Look out for spelling and grammar errors throughout the site.

Spending a fair chunk on going to see your favourite big artist is not new - but it certainly feels like concert prices have entered a new stratosphere.

Fans of Bruce Springsteen have paid upwards of £120 for "rear pitch" standing tickets for his May 2024 tour, while some expressed disappointment recently over the £145 price tag of standing tickets for Billie Eilish's 2025 UK leg.

And while you could have nabbed Beyonce or Taylor Swift tickets in the UK for £50 (before fees) if you took a "nosebleed" seat, these had limited availability and quickly sold out. General admission standing tickets for Swift's Eras tour - which comes to the UK next week - started at £110.40 and those at the front had to shell out £172.25. It didn't stop there - by the time many fans got to the front of the online ticket queue, the only tickets left cost upwards of £300.

So what's behind rising ticket costs? These are some of the reasons...

Fans willing to pay for big spectacles

Simply put, ticket prices would come down if people voted with their feet.

Matt Hanner, booking agent and operations director at Runway, said prices at the top level had "risen considerably" - but the increase was partly being driven by demand.

"We're seeing a lot more stadium shows, greenfield, outdoor festival-type shows which are now a staple of towns around the country," he said.

"There's a growing number of people that are happy to spend a large chunk of their disposable income on going to a major music event."

Jon Collins, chief executive of LIVE, the trade body representing the UK's live music industry, had a similar view.

He said there were more large-scale shows and tours now than ever, and there was "massive appetite" among music lovers for "bigger spectacles".

Fancy shows mean higher costs - with staffing, the price of the venue, transport, artists' needs, insurance and loads more to factor in.

Of course, all these things are affected by inflation. Collins said ticket prices also factored in the rising costs that had hit every venue from the grassroots scene to major arenas.

"You've got a couple of different factors - you've got the spectacle of the show and the production cost and everything that goes into the ticket price. But then you've also got the fundamentals," he said.

The cost of venue hire has increased "significantly" in the past couple of years due to electricity and gas price rises, he added.

"You've got the increase in the cost of people… very justifiable costs like increases in minimum wage and living wage. At every stage of the process we've got these cost increases that will all push through the pressure on the ticket price."

Are artists being greedy?

How much money artists really earn off live touring is of interest to many - but the music industry is generally reluctant to release details.

The people we spoke to suggested it was not as simple as artist greed because, as we mentioned earlier, there's a lot to pay for before anything reaches their bank accounts.

The Guardian spoke to anonymous insiders about this topic in 2017. Its report suggested that between 50-70% of gross earnings were left for promoters and artists. The piece also cited a commonly quoted figure that the promoter takes 15% of what is left and the act will get 85%.

It all depends on the calibre of the artist and how much work the promoter has had to put in - they could end up with a bigger share if it was a hard push to get the show sold.

The people we spoke to said music acts and their teams would discuss the ticket price, and the bigger the act, the more sway they have - but it's ultimately set by the promoter.

Taylor Swift - arguably the biggest popstar on the planet right now - is personally earning between $10m and $13m (£8m - £10.5m) on every stop of her Eras Tour, according to Forbes. She is reported to take home a whopping 85% of  all revenue  from the tour.

But it's worth pointing out, too, that she's been known to be generous with her cash, having given $100,000 bonuses to the dozens of lorry drivers working on the tour.

What have other artists said?

Some artists have been critical of the high ticket prices being demanded by others.

Tom Grennan told ITV two years ago that he had seen "loads of artists putting tickets out that are way too expensive for the times that we are in", adding that he wanted people to enjoy shows without worrying if they could pay their bills.

Singer-songwriter Paul Heaton was also praised for capping ticket prices for his tour with Jacqui Heaton at £30 in a bid to tackle music industry "greed" and help people during the cost of living.

British star Yungblud recently announced his own music festival, Bludfest - saying the industry was too expensive and needed to be "shaken up".

"I believe that gigs are too expensive, festivals are too expensive, and I just wanted to work to create something that has been completely done by me," he told Sky News.

Meanwhile, frequent Swift collaborator Jack Antonoff has said "dynamic pricing" by ticket sale sites such as Ticketmaster was also an issue when it came to cost.

He told Stereogum that he wanted artists to be able to opt out of the system - which basically means ticket prices increase when a show is in demand - and be able to sell them at the price they choose.

On its website, Ticketmaster describes its "Platinum" tickets as those that have their price adjusted according to supply and demand.

It says the goal of the dynamic pricing system is to "give fans fair and safe access to the tickets, while enabling artists and other people involved in staging live events to price tickets closer to their true market value".

The company claims it is artists, their teams and promoters who set pricing and choose whether dynamic pricing is used for their shows.

Ticketing website fees

As well as dynamic pricing, "sneaky" fees by online ticket sites are also causing issues for live music lovers, according to the consumer champion Which?.

A report from the group last month said an array of fees that isn't seen until checkout can add around 20% to the cost of concert and festival tickets.

Which? has urged a crackdown on the "bewildering" extra charges, which include booking, "delivery" and "transaction" fees, venue charges and sometimes charges for e-tickets.

The Cure lead singer Robert Smith tweeted that he was "sickened" after fans complained last year about processing fees  on Ticketmaster that wound up costing more than the ticket itself in some cases.

Responding to the Which? findings, Ticketmaster (which was far from the only company named) said: "Fees are typically set by and shared with our clients… who all invest their skill, resource and capital into getting an event off the ground. Ticketmaster supports legislation that requires all-in pricing across the industry."

Live Nation and Ticketmaster sued over 'dominance'

The US government is suing Ticketmaster owner Live Nation over allegations the company is "monopolising" the live events industry.

Justice department officials said it was unfair for the firm to control around 70% of primary ticketing for concerts in America.

Live Nation has been accused of using lengthy contracts to prevent venues from choosing rival ticket companies, blocking venues from using multiple ticket sellers and threatening venues that they could lose money and support if Ticketmaster wasn't the chosen seller.

Live Nation said the lawsuit reflected a White House that had turned over competition enforcement "to a populist urge that simply rejects how antitrust law works".

"Some call this 'anti-monopoly', but in reality it is just anti-business," it said.

And it said its share of the market had been shrinking and its profit margin of 1.4% was the "opposite of monopoly power".

The lawsuit "won't solve the issues fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees and access to in-demand shows", the company said.

"We will defend against these baseless allegations, use this opportunity to shed light on the industry and continue to push for reforms that truly protect consumers and artists."

As well as reportedly controlling most of the ticketing market, Live Nation also owns and represents some acts and venues.

Canadian artist Dan Mangan told Moneywise this was enabling the company to take "more and more of the pie".

He said when venue rent, equipment and other costs were taken into account, lesser known artists could take as little as 20% of ticket sales.

Another major cost on tickets in the UK is VAT (value added tax).

At 20%, it's pretty hefty. It was brought down to 5% and then 12.5% as the live music industry was hampered by COVID, but returned to the pre-pandemic level in April 2022.

The charge puts the UK "out of step" with other countries, Collins said.

"In competitive major markets like France, it's 5%. Germany it's 7%, Italy it's 10%. Sales tax in the US is typically 6% or 7%. So we are significantly out of step with other markets when it comes to how much VAT we charge on tickets," he said.

Touring now bigger source of income for major stars

With the decline of physical products and the rise of subscription listening, artists are earning less from making music - and income from live shows has become more important for the biggest stars.

Writer and broadcaster Paul Stokes said major stars who would have toured infrequently in the past were now willing to put on more shows as it becomes increasingly profitable.

Some artists will even pencil in multiple nights at huge venues like Wembley Arena, he said - something that wouldn't have been considered two decades ago.

"When Wembley was built and they said 'we'll be doing regular shows' you'd think 'are there acts big enough to fill this massive stadium?'

"It's become absolutely part of the live calendar that artists will come and play not just one night at Wembley, but two or three every every summer."

Stokes said this demand has also prompted the scale of shows that we've become used to seeing, featuring expensive production and pyrotechnics.

Not being felt evenly

While a night out seeing a platinum-selling artist is likely to be an expensive affair, industry figures are also keen to point out that the escalation in ticket prices isn't necessarily happening at a lower level.

Collins said that while major stars were putting on arena shows, there would be plenty of other live music taking place at the same time, "from the free pub gig to the £10 ticket at the grassroots venue, to the £30 mid-cap".

"There's an absolute range of opportunities for people to experience live music, from free through to experiencing the biggest stars on the planet," he said.

But concertgoers choosing to save their cash for artists they're more familiar with may have led to a "suppression" of prices for lesser-known acts, Hanner noted.

"Everyone's short of disposable income because there's a cost of living crisis. [Artists' and promoters'] core costs are going up as well, so it's more expensive for everyone. That fear of pricing people out is just being compounded," he said.

"I think [that] has definitely led to prices being suppressed [at the lower level], when really they should have been going up."

With May in the rearview mirror, here are the key money dates for your calendar in June.

1 June onwards - benefit changes

While benefits rose 6.7% from 8 April for many claimants, those who had their last assessment period before then will have had to wait until June to receive the new, higher rate.

The exact date in June when that payment is made will depend on when you were assessed.

Also from 1 June, all people claiming Housing Benefit alone will be asked to claim Universal Credit instead within three months of receiving the letter.

Failure to do so could result in you losing your entitlement.

1-2 June - Heathrow disruption

Hundreds of border force officers at Heathrow Airport are striking until Sunday in a dispute over rosters.

More than 500 of its members working on passport control at terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 are taking action.

Disruption is expected over the weekend as families return to the UK at the end of the half-term holiday.

5 June - new banknotes

Banknotes featuring the face of the King will enter circulation across the UK.

Notes that feature the portrait of the late Queen will remain legal tender and will co-circulate.

The new banknotes will only be printed to replace those that are worn and to meet any overall increase in demand.

10 June - £500 cat fines

All cats over 20 weeks old in England must be microchipped by 10 June.

You could face a £500 if you miss the deadline and don't get your cat microchipped in the following 21 days.

The law does not apply to the rest of the UK.

16 June - Father's Day

As the day dedicated to dads and father figures approaches, it may be worth remembering to put some cash aside to treat them in mid-June.

19 June - inflation data released

We'll get May's inflation data in the monthly drop from the Office for National Statistics.

This will give us the clearest indication of whether the Bank of England will lower interest rates.

Remember, the Bank's target is 2% (April's headline rate was 2.3%), so the closer we get to that number the better.

20 June - interest rate decision

Another Monetary Policy Committee meeting at the Bank of England will determine whether we finally get a drop in interest rates.

Many economists predict a cut from 5.25% will happen in August, but June isn't ruled out.

27 June - doctors' strike

Junior doctors in England will begin a five-day strike at 7am over pay.

The last strike by junior doctors led to 91,048 appointments, operations and procedures being postponed.

30 June - meter readings

Not a fixed date - more of a reminder.

From 1 July, the energy price cap will fall by £122 per year.

Your provider will do most of the work, but you can help keep your bill accurate by submitting meter readings (unless you have a smart meter) ahead of this date.

The big topics covered in the Money blog this week that got you commenting were...

  • Manchester United giving staff who don't want to come into the office a week to resign
  • Raheem Sterling offering to pay for 14 people to go to university
  • Fines for pebble-taking tourists on beaches
  • The standing charge rising despite the energy price cap being cut

Let's start with the two football-related stories.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, new part-owner of Manchester United, sent an email round on Tuesday offering all non-playing staff the chance to resign (with their annual bonus paid early) within the week if they do not like his plan to stop working from home ...

Some praised his decision...

Well done Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Finally, somebody who has the guts to stand up and end this 'working from home' nonsense! edwinbasnett
Sir Jim has got it right, decisions are decisive and provide clear expectations and an option to get out. WFH doesn't work at the levels seen following COVID, I'm sure it does for some but many take advantage and it's far more difficult to manage. Tel

Others not so much...

Thankfully there's not quite so stark an ultimatum from my employer, but I am planning to leave soon. It's a nonsense commuting to an office where I then engage with other colleagues over Teams/Zoom. Jim
Who wants to work for a **** like that anyway with that attitude? No filter

Earlier in the week, we learnt Raheem Sterling will financially support 14 students through university.

Applications for the Raheem Sterling Foundation Scholarship Programme - which closed on Thursday - were open to students of black, African and Caribbean heritage from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds to help bridge the equality gap.

This will be the second year the Chelsea forward will assist successful applicants at King's College London and the University of Manchester.

Sterling is a credit to sport, football and his heritage. I hope more footballers will join him and his endeavours. Judy
This is brilliant - I have never understood why professionals in many fields do not give more back to their communities. Just a visit to their old primary school could turn a bright light on for so many kids. Why don't many more do it? Old white woman
Well done Raheem Sterling for financially supporting 14 students who would like to attend university. Sometimes professional football players get a negative press but this is amazing, well done. Anthony G

Away from football and to Cumbria - where beach-goers have been warned they could face a fine of up to £1,000 if they remove pebbles or shells across the area.

You said...

Why aren't the same rules applied to stop Southern Water dumping all their s*** into our seas. They take millions of pounds from normal people who trust them to process it correctly. Anti s outhern water
So that means the thrill of going to the beach and collecting a few shells is stopped. What about the scallop shells used in restaurants and supermarkets? What about the sacks of shells sold at garden centres? What about the tonnes of sand used every day etc etc? JR
Has the world gone mad? £1,000 fine for taking pebbles home from a beach? I think most children take a few pebbles home with them.  Bob

Many of you responded to last Friday's announcement that while the energy price cap would fall in July, standing charges - the set amount you pay for gas and electric each day regardless of use - would be going up.

Martin Lewis's explanation of it can be read here...

Here's what you said...

Are there any regulations for energy supplies regarding the standing charge? Every time the unit price drops my supplier raises the standing charge. SianW
Our energy bills have dropped, now the heating is off. However, the high daily standing charge means my bills are off the starting blocks even before the switches are flicked. Come the winter the price cap will rise again - not unlike profiteering in wartime. Porthy
My standing charges are almost three times what they used to be. I've cut back on my usage to the point I pay more a month in standing charges than I do usage so having the unit price drop makes little impact. P hunt
The energy companies have ripped us off for the last two years. The daily standing charge has to go. The shareholders have had real good dividends over the past few years, and therefore must pay for the people that can't pay their bills, because of the bonuses they have received. michael rogers

Global Entry Mobile App Now Available in More Airports

WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today that the Global Entry mobile application can now be used at eight additional airports, enabling more trusted travelers to complete their arrival processing on the plane instead of waiting in line to use a portal.

“CBP has prioritized Global Entry arrival to enhance the speed, accuracy, and security of the arrival process for trusted travelers,” said CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller. “CBP officers are often the first to welcome trusted travelers when they arrive home, and we want to continue to find ways to improve that experience through new technologies and innovations while maintaining the highest levels of security.”

Travelers may now use the app at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport, Nashville International Airport, Houston International, Kansas City International Airport, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and Toledo Express Airport. The app will be available to Trusted Traveler Programs members flying into all 77 U.S. international airports by the end of fiscal year 2024. A list of U.S. airports that currently accept the GE mobile app can be found here .

The Global Entry app is available to be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and can currently be used at 53 international ports of entry in the United States and all Preclearance locations. Upon landing at any of these airports, Global Entry members can complete their entry processing before leaving the plane, and then bypass the Global Entry portals to speak with a CBP officer.

Global Entry is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler Programs , and is used at land, air, and seaports of entry into the United States at all major airports and all Preclearance airports. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before initial enrollment. To maintain Global Entry members as low-risk travelers, any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges. More information on Global Entry and CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs is available here .

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is America's frontline: the nation's largest law enforcement organization and the world's first unified border management agency.
