Boyzlife speak to Natalie Boare

Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy have told ITV News Meridian "it was such a whirlwind" when they first started out in Westlife and Boyzone.

They were talking at The Hexagon theatre in Reading, as their Boyzlife tour hits theatres across the South East.

Brian says: "I think for both of us, we never expected when we started how big it was going to be. I think we all had dreams of what we wanted to do.

"I think for me personally my dream was just to be in a band and perform."

Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden were in two of the biggest boybands of the 90s and the noughties, Boyzone and Westlife.

Between them they've had multiple number one singles and sold millions of records worldwide.

In 2016 the long term pals decided to come together to form a new band, Boyzlife.

On being back on stage again, Keith told Natalie, "If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life."

As well as new music, fans can expect some of the classics from Boyzone and Westlife weaved into the setlist.

Brian says: "If you look at the songs we wrote when we were kids, they would have been inspired by young love or young relationships or things in your life.

"It's a lot easier when you get older and more experienced to find things to be inspired to write about."

When asked if they ever annoy each other he added: "There's lots of times when we are both in good moods and they are great weeks but like any other family we have our days when we're in different moods and we can get on each other's nerves a bit."

Boyzlife the tour is headed to Bournemouth, Oxford, Southend-on-Sea, Folkestone, Guildford, Portsmouth and Dartford.

This is an amazing show with amazing music. You will not be disappointed by the energy and engagement of Brian with the crowd! The show was great, there were 2 warm a comedians before Brian, the 1st was very good although he had no theme except to pick on 1 guy in the front row. He was not able to ad anything else to his act beside picking on 1 person. The 2nd guy I don't even remember what he said, made no impression at all.Brian McFadden had a show, a theme - he was great and I enjoyed the show and would recommend people to go to see him again for a great night out.Brian was awesome! He is better live than on CD. We will be going to his shows whenever we can...wouldn't miss it!

The singer-songwriter and TV Presenter from Ireland, Brian McFadden started his career as a member of ‘Westlife’ in 1998 but is now touring the UK as a member of Boyzlife with plenty of exciting plans for the future.

Boyzlife’s Brian McFadden: ‘I’d probably have stayed with Westlife if we’d taken a six month break’

Brian McFadden admits he likely wouldn’t have walked away from Westlife if the group had taken a short break in the early ‘00s.

The boyband dominated the charts with a string of No. 1 hits following their 1999 debut, but five years into their success Brian departed the group in favour of a solo career.

Don't Miss...

Boyzlife announce 2025 uk tour celebrating boyzone and westlife’s biggest hits, boyzlife drop latest single ‘all this time’ from new album ‘old school’.

Now, he’s joined forces with Boyzone’s Keith Duffy for their new duo project Boyzlife and, ahead of the release of their LP ‘Old School’, he looked back on his early success.

Speaking in the May 2022 issue of Retro Pop, the singer-songwriter confesses: “There was a lot of it that wasn’t enjoyable. Because [Boyzone and Westlife] were almost like companies; they weren’t just a band going out and having fun.

“There were so many people – managers, record companies – and they were huge machines. “There were bits that were joyful, but there was a lot of work. There were a lot of people making money from it. So everyone just constantly wanted to just keep going and going.”

He adds: “I probably would have stayed with Westlife a lot longer if we had sat down and said, ‘Let’s take six months off, and let’s smell the roses and enjoy all the success we’ve had’.

“Maybe things would have been different… I’m sure with a lot of bands that had been around in our era, they probably would have lasted a lot longer if they had just stepped back and taken a break.”

Keith had similar experiences when life with Boyzone was “not fun anymore,” however he remains optimistic. “It doesn’t mean it can’t be fun again – you just need a break,” he muses. “You need a rest. You need to gather your thoughts. You need to spend time with your family and your loved ones, maybe go on a holiday, do something different…

“There’s never a need to be final and dramatic [and say], ‘It’s over, it doesn’t work anymore…’. It’s just tired, so have a break and then come back to it. Go and do other things; it’s something you can always go back to.”

Westlife’s Markus Feehily ‘temporarily stands down’ from tour due to ill health

brian mcfadden tour 2022

Irish singer Markus Feehily has announced he will “temporarily stand down from all Westlife touring” until he has recovered from various “health challenges”.

The 43-year-old from Sligo, who recently had surgery, said “my recovery must now become my absolute priority at this time”.

The singer revealed that he has “had ongoing medical problems” since he went for surgery in August 2020 and subsequently developed “severe sepsis”.

He mentioned it was “physically and mentally a very difficult time” for him and said it was “traumatic” to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) during Covid 19 lockdown restrictions after he developed the life-threatening reaction to an infection that he was told would “require immediate emergency surgery.”

He “became very ill” again in late 2021 before he had more surgery in May 2022 which was followed by another round of surgery which he said “took place recently” and “went according to plan.”

In a statement to Instagram, he said: “It is with the upmost level of regret that I must now temporarily stand down from all Westlife touring until a time that I have had the chance to fully recover from the turbulent journey I have been through as an individual.

“Believe me, I wish things could be different! I would like to thank you so very much for your support and understanding of me and my health over the past few years.”

He added: “To Shane (Filan), Kian (Egan) and Nicky (Byrne), I love you three and I know you’ll knock it out of the park.

“I’ll be there with you in spirit for each and every show whilst you continue to fly the Westlife flag around the world.

“To all the medical staff who held my hand and kept my spirit lifted (you know who you are!), my heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every one of you.

“I’m so devastated that I won’t be there to celebrate the upcoming concerts with you and the 3 lads.

“I hope you know and understand that I should have been there (I was so excited to be there!) and that I look forward to seeing you all again to make some more magic in the future.

“But for now, I have to make the right decision for my health and wellbeing, for my family, and for myself as a person.

“Please don’t worry.”

Bandmembers Egan, Byrne and Filan sent their well wishes to their friend and “brother”.

A statement posted to Westlife’s Instagram story said: “We would like to take this opportunity to send our brother, best friend and fellow bandmate, Mark, so many well wishes as he takes the necessary time he needs to recover.

“Mark has been so strong in continuing to show up on stage despite going through such a turbulent time with his health and we completely respect that he must now focus on getting better so he can return to the stage when he is fit and well to do so!

“In the meantime, we will continue to fly the Westlife flag higher than ever for you guys. Love Kian, Nicky and Shane.”

Westlife’s The Wild Dreams Tour began in 2022 and the group have upcoming dates in America, Canada and South America this March.

The band, alongside former member Brian McFadden , found fame with Westlife after forming in 1998.

They disbanded in 2012 after 14 years of success, but reunited in 2018 without McFadden – who left the band in 2004.

In August 2022 they sold out London’s Wembley Stadium for their first ever performance at the venue.

Feehily appeared as Robobunny on celebrity singing show The Masked Singer in 2022 and came third place.

Brian McFadden: 'Golf Still Needs To Be More Inclusive For Women'

The former Westlife singer believes there is still a somewhat stuffy nature to the game despite a sudden boom in participation

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Brian McFadden

Brian McFadden has a message for the hordes of young girls who helped him become a superstar as a member of the chart-topping Irish group Westlife: “Take up golf. You’ll love it”.

No-one could ever doubt McFadden’s own passion for the game. The five handicapper is practically a permanent fixture on the pro-am scene at DP World Tour events, and has bought a big stake in the fast-growing Druids golf wear company. McFadden’s two teenage daughters are also keen golfers, but he would love to see a lot more girls taking up the sport.

He said: “I absolutely love playing golf, and being around golfers. But if there’s one thing I wish for the sport, it is that it would become more inclusive. To most young people it is still too stuffy, and far too time-consuming. Those are the issues we need to address to safeguard the future of the game.

“I think the European Tour – or the DP World Tour as they are now – have been brilliant in pushing formats like the Super Sixes competition, joint events for men and women, and some absolutely fantastic social media content.

“But we need to do a lot more . It’s like cricket with the T20 and Big Bash competitions – we need to get kids hooked onto things like the Super Sixes, par-three competitions, nine-hole events, two or three club challenges, all that stuff.

“And we do need to relax the dress code, because that is what gives golf its stuffy image. I can quote you a personal experience from one of the clubs where I’m a member. I was playing a round in strong winds, and I turned my baseball cap around to play my shots, because it was in danger of blowing off, and then turned it back round the right way.

“But the next day a letter went out to every member saying there had been a complaint about someone wearing his cap back to front, and that practice was one the club wanted to discourage. My name wasn’t used, but everyone knew who they meant. But come on, is that something you need to complain about? Get a life!

“The whole dress code is something we need to address. What Tyrrell Hatton did by wearing the hoodies at Wentworth was spot on. Let youngsters dress the way they feel comfortable. But even though the R&A have said clubs should allow jeans, I'd draw the line there. That’s just a personal thing though – have you ever tried swinging a club wearing jeans?

“But let’s get them started early. I started playing when I was six or seven with my dad. You only get a few good days of summer in Dublin, but we’d play in all kinds of weather. Dad would come off work at 5pm, and we’d play on a nine-hole public golf course. I was bitten by the golf bug straight away.”

Brian McFadden

McFadden started playing golf when he was seven back home in Ireland

McFadden, 41, is doing his bit towards providing clothes young golfers will embrace. He has bought a big stake in Edinburgh-based golfwear manufacturers Druids – who have enlisted his partner, Danielle, to design their female range.

McFadden explained: “The Druids thing was quite funny. It started with them contacting athletes and musicians and guys on the pro-am circuit, and sending them free gear, to see if they liked it. They’re Irish guys but based in Scotland, and I thought it would be nice to support them.

“Anyway, they invited us up to play Dumbarnie near St Andrews, and the guys were all in matching gear. Danielle was with me, also playing, but there was nothing for her, so she felt a bit left out.

“So later we sat down with Lewis Jones, who started the company, and talked about Dani designing a ladies range for Druids. She spent the next six months designing the ladies stuff, and it went from there.

“Dani wasn’t a designer, but she had clear ideas of what she wanted. She felt a lot of women’s golf gear was a bit samey, and a bit stuffy, and a lot of it was aimed at the older market.

“She wanted to do a range that would stretch across the whole market, and appeal to young, athletic kids as well as the older players.

“In our family we’ve got relatives in their late 60s who play golf, Dani obviously plays, and my daughters play. So we had three generations to use as sounding boards. And all three were saying yeah, I’d wear that.

“It’s getting pretty big, and I wear the Druids stuff all the time. I just wish I could do my bit by playing a bit better!”

Brian McFadden has revealed he hasn’t spoken to his former Westlife bandmates for 12 years

brian mcfadden tour 2022

Brian McFadden has admitted he hasn’t spoken to his former bandmates in Westlife for 12 years.

The 41-year-old says he has lost touch with Shane Filan, Markus Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne since going on a night out together in the US.

Today's top videos

Story continues below.

He told the podcast Secure the Insecure with Johnny Seifert, Brian explained: ‘The last time we were all in the same room was when I was living in LA and we went for dinner.

brian mcfadden tour 2022

‘I was about 28, so we haven’t even spoken in about 12 years ago. The boys were in town shooting a music video.

‘We went for dinner then the boys came back to my house. That was the last time the five of us were together.’

Brian was in the band for six years in the group but quit just weeks before their fourth world tour.

brian mcfadden tour 2022

At the time he told fans he wanted to spend more time with his ex-wife Kerry Katona and their two children, Molly and Lilly-Sue.

He later tried his hand at a solo career and most recently Brian has been promoting his new music alongside Boyzone’s Keith Duffy as part of their supergroup, Boyzlife.

Westlife went their separate ways in 2012 before reuniting six years later.

brian mcfadden tour 2022

They are due to play the Aviva stadium in July as part of a massive UK and Ireland tour.

However, Brian made it clear he is not on bad terms with his former bandmates: ‘It’s not a negative thing. It’s not like we fell out or anything like that.

‘You separate and go your own way. You think you’re going to keep in touch but you don’t, your lives go in different directions. That’s what happened to us.

‘If I saw any of the boys now I’d sit and have a pint and it’d probably be like we saw each other yesterday.

‘There’s animosity, there’s no badness, there’s no negative feeling towards each other.

‘It’s not like we fell out and we’re not friends any more, we’re just not in contact any more.

‘That’s kind of what happens in life, you just move on. It’s not always a bad thing.’

Jaylon Johnson was defined by what he didn’t have; now he has more than enough

Jaylon Johnson finally emerged with a contract extension from the Chicago Bears in March.

The Bears asked him to come to Halas Hall to announce the $76 million deal with $47.8 million guaranteed, the second-highest amount ever given to a defensive back. Johnson was willing, but only if the team commissioned a private jet to fly him and his loved ones from his hometown of Fresno, Calif. The Bears agreed.

At the news conference, nine of his people — including father John Johnson Sr., mother Carmella Warren Johnson, brother, housemate and trainer Johnny Johnson, agent Chris Ellison and girlfriend Janessa McFadden — accompanied Johnson. He walked in wearing a long-sleeved Prada shirt with mother-of-pearl buttons and hand-crafted fringes on the shoulders. The red-and-black pattern looked like it came from an exotic butterfly.

Johnson had prepared an opening statement. Then he amended it. “My spirit was like, you can’t do that without talking about what you went through,” he says. “You have to put it all out there.”

He started the news conference by thanking God, then said abruptly, “I went to therapy last season for sexual addiction .”

Nobody knew he would say that, not even the people he brought with him. And few could understand why.

This wasn’t a contract signing as much as a metamorphosis.

For a while, Johnson was defined by what he didn’t have — interceptions, a new contract and self-control.

In early 2022, the Bears hired a new general manager and head coach. Johnson, a second-round pick in 2020, didn’t show up for voluntary offseason workouts. When mandatory workouts began, he had been demoted to second string. He regained his starting spot quickly, but some hard feelings lingered, especially while Johnson acclimated to coach Matt Eberflus’ push for more intensity.

Since his rookie training camp, Johnson has not been shy about questioning or challenging authority, and that has not changed over time.

“Clearly, I was one of the top guys on the team, so with that should have come a sense of respect,” Johnson says. “I shouldn’t have had to prove myself in everything. Don’t play with me. We’re grown men. I didn’t feel valued from the coaching staff.”

Takeaways are priority No. 1 in Eberflus’ defense, and given that Johnson had no interceptions and missed six games with injuries in 2022, “they were probably questioning what I could do,” he says.

Bears rookie Theo Benedet brings athleticism from Vancouver to the NFL

Johnson had just one interception over 39 games in his first three NFL seasons, but part of his problem may have been that he’s so sticky in man-to-man that quarterbacks avoided throwing to the players he covered. “He’s got elite quickness,” Eberflus says. “He has elite ability to stay attached to receivers. And he’s uber-intelligent.”

The Bears’ faith in him remained in question. Johnson was hoping for an offseason contract extension. There were talks, but the two parties remained far from a middle ground. They agreed to see how Johnson played in the early season and revisit it.

In the spring of 2023, Johnson was baptized. The church has always been a part of his life. Years ago, he had “Proverbs 16:3” tattooed on his arm: “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”

He didn’t need to be baptized, but he wanted to be.

“I didn’t want to keep being what I say is a lukewarm Christian, reading Bible verses but living your life a different way,” he says. “I wanted to make a commitment and an outward expression of my faith to the world.”

He also needed to redirect himself. He had been unfaithful to Janessa, his girlfriend since 2021. Again. And he was watching a lot of pornography.

Johnson says he lost his virginity at 16 and then adopted the mindset that more is better. In high school, he was a four-star recruit. In college at Utah, he was all-conference. Things came easily for the big man on campus.

“Playing a manly sport drew girls to me,” he says. “It wasn’t hard to go to a party, get a number and have sex. I got lost in a sense of who I was created to be versus whatever felt good to me.”

Johnson graduated in two and a half years, and the Bears drafted him in the second round in 2020. As a pro, he was afforded an unhealthy combination of time and celebrity.

“I could just have fun, sleep with whomever I wanted,” he says. “Anytime there was nothing going on, it would revert to girls. It got to the point where I wasn’t able to shake it.”

He justified it. He wasn’t doing anything different from a lot of people like him.

He downplayed it. Nobody was getting hurt, right?

By the summer of 2023, Johnson started to see more clearly. He wouldn’t want his 4-year-old daughter, Zaveah, to end up with someone who behaved like him. McFadden was special, he believed, and he didn’t want to lose her. He was ashamed.

Chicago Bears 2024 schedule: Spotlight shines on Caleb Williams early, often

Finally, he admitted to himself and to McFadden that he had a problem. He spent an hour or two in therapy almost every week during the season. It was, however, a struggle. He had to tear down walls, talk about his childhood and accept blame.

What he was going through had nothing to do with football.

And everything to do with football.

On a sunny fourth quarter at Soldier Field, Johnson watched the eyes of Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer . Johnson hung back, waiting for wide receiver Davante Adams to break. As Hoyer cocked his arm, Johnson jumped the route, stepped in front of Adams and came up with the interception — his first in 28 games. He brought it back 39 yards for a touchdown, then intercepted another pass five plays later.

brian mcfadden tour 2022

The Bears reopened negotiations, but their respective opinions of his value still differed.

“Their offers were very disrespectfully low,” Johnson says. “The players they compared me to, there’s no way you can compare me to these players. One of them was ( Minnesota ’s) Byron Murphy.”

Johnson was frustrated, and not just because of his contract situation. The Bears lost seven of their first nine games after a 3-14 record the year before.

“We kept losing, losing, losing,” he says. “And then they weren’t showing interest in bringing me back. I wasn’t happy with the culture and how we were losing, so I asked for a trade.”

The Bears declined. Then in late October, as the trade deadline approached, he asked a second time. Chicago gave his agent, Ellison, permission to shop Johnson but said they would accept nothing less than a first-round pick in return, according to Johnson. Ellison says seven or eight teams were interested. According to Johnson, the Bills , 49ers , Raiders and Steelers were among them. The Bills and 49ers tried hard to strike a deal but ultimately were not willing to meet the Bears’ demands.

So the trade deadline passed, contract talks were tabled and Johnson committed to making the Bears realize he was worth what he thought he was.

“I didn’t want to talk about it anymore,” he says. “I didn’t want to think about it anymore. It was, let’s just go play football .”

Johnson finished the season with four interceptions — he dropped two more potential picks — 10 passes defensed and one touchdown allowed. He was voted second-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler and was given Pro Football Focus’s highest grade among cornerbacks.

On March 5, Chicago placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Johnson. Two days later, the sides agreed on terms for his four-year extension.

Everything continues to feel different for the Bears and Caleb Williams

They say money like his is life-changing, but it’s not like he bought a chateau on a cliff or a gold chain heavy enough to prevent a hot air balloon from taking off.

Teammates tease him because he still drives a Honda Accord.

“Hey, it’s sporty, clean, all black,” he says. “It gets me to and from where I need to go.”

The money is, however, affirmation. And so are words.

“Jaylon has exhibited everything we want in a Chicago Bear,” says Eberflus, who plans to use Johnson in new ways this season. “It’s how we draw it up in terms of him loving football, being a very talented player and having the desire to try to master his craft. He’s a really good teammate. And he’s one of ours.”

Falcons receiver Darnell Mooney , Johnson’s former teammate in Chicago, calls him the best cornerback in the NFL. “He always gives me problems,” Mooney says. “Every time I line up against him, I’ve got to be focused.”

At only 25, Johnson has become the elder statesman of the Bears’ secondary and a cornerstone of a young team. Johnson says his relationship with the coaching staff has improved over time. He’s pleased to be a Bear and invigorated by the challenge of living up to his contract, as well as earning the next one, which he will have a chance to sign before his 30th birthday.

Befitting his new status, Johnson has a new uniform number: 1. Johnson switched from 33 back to the number he wore in high school and college when it became available after the trade of quarterback Justin Fields . He says he loves the new vibe.

brian mcfadden tour 2022

Therapy did what he hoped it would, enabling him to regain control and enhancing his perspective. “I learned that giving yourself away should be sacred to someone you are going to spend the rest of your life with,” he says. Going public with his addiction may benefit others with similar problems, he believes, so he has no regrets.

His relationship with McFadden is in a good place, a really good place. Last month, he proposed. She said yes. He is convinced that her honesty and support are making him better. He loves the way she cares for his daughter. And in September, they are expecting a child.

He also is expecting more interceptions — at least five this season.

As far as Johnson could tell, his previous interception failures weren’t because of anything he did wrong. It was as if his karma was out of whack.

And then 2023 happened.

“He had a nice glow to him walking around last year,” says Mooney, who considers Johnson a brother. “He just had some lovely energy every time you were around him.”

Johnson says he wasn’t doing anything different on the field. “What changed was God gave me the opportunities,” he says.

He thinks he knows why.

“When you have your mind and spirit on a certain level, the physical takes over and doors start to open up,” he says. “As I was trying to improve who I am as a man, all of a sudden, things I was hoping for happened.”
