PXG PGA TOUR Pro Luke List snags his second career title, while PXG Korn Ferry Tour Player Paul Barjon secures another win and his PGA TOUR card

Scottsdale, AZ  – PXG Tour Professionals swept the men’s tours over the weekend, officially lighting up the leaderboards across the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours. 

PXG PGA TOUR Professional Luke List came through in a big way on Sunday, triumphing in a 5-man playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship. This is List’s second career win on the PGA TOUR, following his victory at Torrey Pines last year.

“Luke is always a fun player to watch, and he certainly did not disappoint this weekend. He earned his place in the winners’ circle, adding to an incredible year of seven wins for PXG’s tour players,” said PXG Founder and CEO Bob Parsons.  

“This is the best I have played all year,” Luke List offered. “I feel like everything – from my swing to my PXG golf clubs – is really dialed-in. This win is further affirmation for me that the hours and the grind has been worth it.”

Over on the Korn Ferry Tour, PXG Tour Professional Paul Barjon carded 14-under to clinch a three-stroke victory at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance. The win launched Barjon from No. 45 to No. 8 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, locking up his 2024 PGA TOUR card.

“I couldn’t have planned for a better way to finish out the season. I truly appreciate everyone who has stood by me this year, including my wife, coach, and the team at PXG, to make sure I was equipped and ready to play my best,” shared PXG Tour Professional Paul Barjon. 

Barjon was among several PXG Tour Professionals who received their PGA TOUR cards over the weekend, including Jake Knapp, Patrick Fishburn, Ryan McCormick, and Kevin Dougherty. 

“What a great finish to a good season for Paul Barjon,” Parsons stated. “With today’s hard-earned victory, Paul joins four other PXG Troops in receiving their PGA TOUR cards for the upcoming season. Kaboom baby!”

Kim, a graduate of PXG’s College Golf Program, won the Epson Tour Championship. Both Ladies earned their tour cards for the upcoming season following their outstanding victories.

PXG 0317 T Irons Review

The PXG 0317 T irons use hollow body technology to give better players more forgiveness.  High spin and excellent distance consistency.  Extremely solid feel.

Introduction

While most of the OEMs are coasting into the offseason, PXG is giving golfers something new to get excited about.  Their popular T iron – absent from the 0311 GEN6 launch earlier this year – has moved to the 0317 line geared toward better players.  In this review, I’ll explain how the new PXG 0317 T is unlike any previous T iron and why it deserves a look from all skilled golfers.

In the bag, the look of the PXG 0317 T irons is in line with the 0317 ST [review HERE ] and 0317 CB.  It’s actually closer to the ST, though it is slightly thicker, particularly at the top of the blade.  The back features PXG’s Precision Weighting Technology and the myriad of milled surfaces that PXG has become known for.

The PXG 0317 T irons are available in two finishes: chrome (seen here) or Xtreme Darkness.

At address, the 0317 T is slightly larger than the 0317 CB [review HERE ], but it’s still a compact iron.  The top line is thin and gently rounded to appear even smaller.  Interestingly, the offset specs of the T irons are the same as the CB and ST in the 6-8 irons, there’s slightly more in the long irons, but there’s actually less offset in the scoring irons .

Sound & Feel

Going back to the first generation, PXG’s hollow body irons have always had a signature bouncy feel off the face.  That feel is still present in the 0311 XP GEN6 irons [review HERE ], but it’s absent from the 0317 T irons.  The reason is a new polymer inside the head.  Where the P and XP irons use XCOR2, the PXG 0317 T irons are filled with S COR material .  That S stands for stability, which is evident in the feel.

At impact, nothing about the feel of these irons would let you know that they’re hollow.  The feel is solid and connected , just like a traditional forged iron.  Also true to their mission, these irons deliver a superb, rewarding feel on center.  There is good feedback through the hands, though it doesn’t scream out for your attention.

Striking a Tour-quality ball with these irons produces a quiet “thud” that complements the feel.  As with the feel, you can hear some differences between pure strikes and mishits, but they’re not glaring.

Performance

Since its introduction, hollow body iron technology has given players more forgiveness and more distance.  The PXG 0317 T irons mark the first time that it’s being used purely to boost forgiveness and consistency .  What drives this performance change is the material inside the head.  PXG’s 0311 GEN6 P and XP irons [review HERE ] use XCOR2 which is designed to make the club face more explosive.  The 0317 T uses S COR to stabilize the face and improve consistency.

In my testing, the PXG 0317 T irons produced very consistent distances .  Unlike the current P and XP irons, they’re not longer than my gamers, but they more frequently produce the result that I want.  Also, unlike some hollow irons, I didn’t get any jumpers – those perfectly struck shots that end up flying beyond their expected distance.

Per PXG, the 0317 T irons have an MOI that’s 14% higher than the 0317 ST and 11% higher than the 0317 CB.  This is due to the hollow body design pushing more weight to the perimeter of the club.  The MOI is further boosted by a 15 gram internal tungsten weight.  I noted in my review of the CB that it is noticeably more forgiving than the ST, and the 0317 T is a significant step up from the CB.

Another notable feature of the PXG 0317 T irons is their high spin .  I saw mid-iron spin rates about 5% higher than average in my testing.  Higher spin is part of what keeps the distances in a more traditional range.  It’s also essential for holding firm greens and hitting controlled shot shapes.

If you’re thinking of building a combo set with two or three of the 0317 models, it’s important to note that there are some loft differences.  The 0317 CB and 0317 ST share the exact same loft structure.  The PXG 0317 T irons have the same length and lie specs, but the lofts are one to two degrees stronger throughout most of the set.

Finally, the 0317 T irons feature PXG’s Precision Weighting Technology .  The weight in the center of the club head allows PXG fitters to dial in your swing weight .  While finding the perfect swing weight is very important on its own [learn more  HERE ], PWT allows this to be done without moving the center of gravity .  Club builders often modify swing weight by adding weight in the hosel, but this can drag the sweet spot toward the heel.  PWT allows you to have a centered sweet spot and the perfect feel.

It’s unlikely that the PXG 0317 T irons will eclipse the 0311 P and XP among recreational players overall, but for highly skilled golfers, this is the most exciting application of PXG’s hollow body iron technology.  Golfers no longer have to choose between forgiveness and a more traditional loft structure.  If you’re ready for the best of both worlds, visit your PXG fitter to give these a try.

Wow. I’m playing the CB’s now and love them. Are the T’s producing higher ball speeds off face? More distance than the CB’s? There’s mention the T’s are slightly more forgiving than the CB’s, this accurate? My thinking is to head to my PXG location, go through the motions. Perhaps blend 6-7, maybe 8 iron in the T’s and stick with the CB’s 9-PW. I don’t want/need a super hot face in my approach shorter irons. Nice review.

I didn’t see a big difference in ball speed, but the T is more forgiving.

Matt, how was the gapping on the long end? I see PXG has just a 2.5 degree loft difference between the 4 and 5 iron, and just 3 degrees between 5 and 6 — but they seem to have tried to offset that loft bunching by going with longer-than-usual differences in the lengths of those clubs. I think that’s an approach PXG takes with lots of their irons. And if I remember correctly, you praised the gapping of the Ping i525s, which took a similar approach. Just curious if you noticed any bunching or anything that would concern you?

Good question. On quality strikes, I had no issue with the distance gapping. I think some players may see bunching if A) they have a bit less speed B) they don’t get fit or C) they’re borderline in terms of their ball striking.

Would you say the T’s are targeting the same players as the CB’s?

The T is more forgiving, but overall, yes, they’re targeting similar players.

I currently play Srixon Zx7’s. How would you describe the soles of T’s? Did you like the turf interaction? You commented on increased spin, were you satisfied with the spin and flight of the long irons (4 & 5)? Would you place these irons in the same category as a Zx7 a zx5 or somewhere in between? Thanks!!

The soles are fairly thin; I liked the turf interaction, very player-ish. Yes, the flight of the long irons is excellent. These are easily as compact as the ZX7 and as forgiving, possibly more forgiving.

Matt, for those who keep their clubs for 8-10 years at a time before changing them out how would you compare the forgiveness of these irons to a set of better-player irons from 5 years ago/10 years ago/20 years ago/30 years ago? This may seem like a dumb question to many but I suspect there are quite a few of us who have a 10-year-old set of irons that even though our games may not be quite what they were could still play a set like these T’s due to the increase in forgiveness in modern-day clubs. Say an old set of AP2’s compared to the PXG T’s.

Comparing the T to a similarly sized iron from 10 years ago, you’re going to notice a significant jump in forgiveness.

Is there any similarities between the T and p790s? I last played the gen 4 p model as well but went to the p790 due to head size. Felt the p model was a little chunky. Thank you

“Any similarity” – yes, sure. Do I think they’re similar clubs? No. The P790 is built for distance, the 0317 T is not.

You’re likely to see a substantial difference in distance.

Matt, I have noticed the 790s loft is 2.5 degree less than the 0317Ts. Could this makes the distance better than the 0317Ts?

Yes, for most players the 790s will be longer through most of the bag than the 0317 T, but it’s important to recognize that every player has a “loft limit” where they will stop hitting the ball farther and may actually lose distance.

Question: I’m thinking about purchasing the 0317 T irons. They feel wonderful and consistent in my fitting. However; I have a fall off in distance as my swing speed is about 80-82 mph consistently. Subsequently, I am thinking about strengthening the loft by a degree or two. Does “messing” with the loft negate the advantages of spin and height? I’m assuming it will and thus reduce the advantages that come with this iron. My other option would be to simply “club up”. Or else, just pass on these beauties as my swing speed is too slow. “If it ain’t got he swing it don’t mean a thing”.

I’m generally not a fan of altering iron lofts because it affects sole interaction as well as the engineering of the loft/CG combination. I would advocate for clubbing up or getting into some speed training. Alternately, you could look to the PXG GEN6 irons for more distance.

Hi Matt, thanks for the review. I’ve read the reviews on the new Titleist T150 but I’m curious to hear your answer. Comparing the 0317T to the T150, would you say they’re about equal in terms of forgiveness? Would you say they have a very Similar feel as well?

I think the 0317 T is more forgiving, though they’re not worlds different.

I kinda wish you were my stockbroker! I listened to your “tips”….I am now playing PXG 0317 T irons, no modifications, AND, SWAG “The BOSS” putter…my score has never been this low of my shots feel so good and accurate!. I imitated your “portfolio” and wow! I thank you for doing all of this work. I went through 3 fittings…They were all just “OK” Truth, IMO, is on the course. At 73 they immediately put me in GI clubs…thick soles, strong lofts, etc. In truth, the Hot Metals worked well and I’m glad I used them and got my confidence back. I then tried the PXG at the center…it didn’t go well. BUT, I knew that these were the clubs for me. I found a beautiful set…all standard loft and lies on EBay with MMT 70 gm shafts.

I hit them on the range, got my numbers and then went off to my two favorite course. The distance numbers were exactly the same as the Hot Metal despite the difference in loft. The dispersion was excellent and the loft with the shaft was a good 15% higher. The feel was, IMO, much softer, the sound, much better, and the stopping power muc. The improved. On the HM I was fit for 95 gm Recoil. I’m hitting my 7 iron at 80+ mph, and distance in the air is about 155. My gapping is excellent. I’m using a 54 and 58 wedge, a 7 wood and a driver. I’m able to hit my 5 iron about 180 AND I can actually hit it consistently! No 4 iron. & wood 180-210, driver 215 to 245…sometimes even further with a good backwind : )

I opted for the BOSS as I just need that extra bit of stability…Handsome TOO looks better, IMO, but The Boss ain’t too shabby.

'Perfect couple': Russia's dependence on China and what happens if Beijing abandons Moscow

After the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been actively building up relations with China, trying to show the West a new Eastern alliance as opposed to NATO and the European Union. RBC-Ukraine analyzes whether Beijing sees it this way, whether Russia can be called dependent on China, and what will happen if Xi Jinping stops supporting Putin.

In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Beijing to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping once again. The program of the trip was not much different from the previous two visits since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with Putin talking about the brotherly friendship between Russia and China, and Xi talking about the demonstrative cooperation between the two great powers.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, the Kremlin began looking for situational allies. But while rogue countries like Iran and especially the DPRK are not taken seriously by global geopolitical players, China is a powerful ally. Therefore, Moscow is trying to create the illusion that its aggressive actions are supported by good neighborly relations with Beijing. At the same time, China itself does not seek to demonstratively take sides but rather maintains peacekeeping neutrality.

Chinese and Russian approaches to West: Difference

Back in Soviet times, it was hard to imagine that in the twenty-first century, the Russian President would host the Chinese leader with caviar and sturgeon and that Beijing would sing 'The Volga River Flows' during the Kremlin's visit. At that time, Russian-Chinese relations could hardly be called good neighborly, as evidenced by posters of that era with inscriptions such as 'Repulse the Beijing Aggressor!'.

As time passed, China more or less established relations with the United States, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the newly formed Russia needed a strong ally. In the 1990s, Moscow was still broadcasting rather pro-Western narratives, and at that time, according to various sociological studies, Russians were more suspicious of the Chinese than the Americans.

While Beijing was finally establishing itself as one of the strongest economies in the world, anti-Western sentiment was gradually growing in Russia. All things considered, this became the basis for the current, as Xi Jinping himself calls them, exemplary relations between Moscow and Beijing.

But there are several key differences between China's attitude toward the West and Russia's attitude toward it. While the Russian Federation claims to be at war with almost the entire collective West, China shares the Western arena, says Iliya Kusa, an expert at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future.

"They do not consider the West a military enemy, and they are not going to fight it. Moreover, they would not want to. Plus, they consider Europe a partner. And, judging by Xi Jinping's recent European tour, confirms this position that the United States is their main rival. They see Europe as a necessary partner with whom they want to be friends and with whom they link the future of their economic development," Kusa says in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine.

At the same time, both countries are in ideological rivalry with the United States. For China, it is a tradition to act as a so-called counterweight to America, a major geopolitical player that wants to be taken into account and respected. Russia generally strives for the same thing but chooses radically different methods. While Beijing backs up its ambitions with economic development and diplomacy, Moscow uses exclusively militaristic rhetoric. That is why Putin's visits to Xi do not lead to anything radical-China is not taking sides, trying to play the classic role of global mediator.

"And in this regard, they are no different from most countries of the so-called global south. This fits very well with their foreign policy logic, which is that China should come to global influence by unarmed means, like the United States. For this purpose, they need to improve their reputation, and image, and be more active in the political sphere," Kusa says.

Moscow, on the other hand, is trying to build a different picture of the dialog with Beijing - full support, understanding, and alliance. In this way, Russia wants to show Washington, first and foremost, that its coalition with China is a powerful answer to Western NATO, the EU, and other influential alliances. It is not for nothing that in almost every speech Putin emphasizes the current unipolarity of the world and his desire to turn it into a multipolar one, forgetting to clarify that the main field of influence should still be in Moscow.

In this context, the Kremlin's efforts to pretend that it is an equal partner with China look rather silly. When Putin comes to Beijing, the Russians create a picture that he has come to their great ally, and they discuss together how to confront the West. The Chinese version is likely to be about world peace. It is very clear here that China does not view Russia as an equal state, but rather as a junior partner in all respects and nothing more.

Moreover, it cannot be argued that the Chinese, while not criticizing Russia for its expansionist policy, support it. According to experts, it would have been better for Beijing if there had been no war at all. China's current rhetoric does not involve itself in any large-scale geopolitical conflicts. But at the same time, for the Chinese, Moscow appears as a battering ram, exposing weaknesses within Western alliances. And China has an interesting opportunity to observe this from the sidelines. In addition, joining the anti-Russian sanctions could be interpreted as submission to the will of the United States, and secondly, it would mean the loss of one of its trading partners. At the same time, according to Ukraine's Ambassador to China Pavlo Riabikin, more and more Chinese want Ukraine to defeat Russia.

"Speaking about Chinese sentiments and understanding of the reasons for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I would not say that everyone in China believes that Ukraine or NATO was provoking Russia. More and more Chinese are drawing their conclusions and want to defeat the aggressor. Of course, there are also many who, despite the obvious facts, support Russia," Riabikin says in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine.

However, China is one of Russia's main allies in the war against Ukraine. Moscow, under the yoke of sanctions, was forced to reconfigure its market and direct its flows to the East. Therefore, after the start of the Russian invasion, Sino-Russian trade and economic relations have strengthened. In addition, Beijing supports Russia's military sector, but not through direct supplies of its equipment, but through safer methods.

Market relations: Is Russia so dependent on China?

The Russian-Chinese partnership today affects several areas at once, from trade and economic to political. Moscow is using this trump card to its fullest potential.

"Regarding the assistance that China provides to Russia, it is worth mentioning the high level of political contacts, the development of practical cooperation in many areas, and the increase in trade volumes - all of which allow Russia to feel confident in the international arena, to have a wide market for its goods, especially energy resources, as well as a source of supply of the necessary products," Riabikin says.

After the West imposed sanctions on trade relations with Russia, effectively isolating it from its market, China became one of Moscow's most important partners. This resulted in a record level of trade between Russia and China in the first year of the war. Its amount exceeded $190 billion, an increase of almost 30%. The trend continued in the following period. The Kremlin, of course, played up this, calling the increase impressive and claiming that this was what they had been seeking.

The main share of trade between Russia and China is in energy resources: oil, gas, and coal. In 2022, this group of goods accounted for more than 70% of total supplies to China from Russia. At the same time, Russia exports the same oil to China through gray schemes, such as the shadow tanker fleet. It uses it to bypass the price ceiling of $60 per barrel. Today, the Chinese market accounts for about 40% of energy exports. Before the war, it was 20%, meaning that Russia began to depend on China here as well.

Another area of cooperation is automobiles, and here we can also talk about dependence. "The Russian market is almost completely monopolized by the Chinese. After the war broke out, many Western automakers simply left the market and did not supply their cars, at least not directly to Russia," Kusa notes.

But the most important thing for Ukraine is military technology. China is not flooding the Russian military-industrial complex with its equipment, but it is doing a lot to help Moscow circumvent sanctions. Thanks to Beijing, the Russian Federation can obtain dual-use goods using Chinese companies as proxies or through banal smuggling.

In this regard, China helps Russia more than others because it can allow a large amount of sanctioned goods to pass through. But Beijing would not share military technology directly, as there is too much danger of being on the sanctions list itself.

It is not yet possible to talk about Russia's total dependence on the Chinese market - Moscow is still trying to diversify its trade flows, and China is approaching trade with Russia cautiously. But this does not exclude the fact that without Chinese assistance, it would be much more difficult for the Kremlin to feed its war machine.

Will Russia survive without China?

Xi Jinping has very clearly outlined his red lines in Russia's war against Ukraine. The first and foremost is a ban on the use of nuclear weapons. "If we try to define the red line, I think it is indeed the use of nuclear weapons. Let us recall that Russia's verbal nuclear blackmail in 2022 subsided after China declared not only the inadmissibility of the use of nuclear weapons but also the threat of their use," Riabikin says.

The last thing China needs is a nuclear conflict - it doesn't fit their peacekeeping rhetoric and will force them to intervene. Another less obvious red line from Xi is to localize the military conflict and prevent it from escalating into something larger. But this line also intersects with nuclear blackmail.

"They would not want the war in Ukraine to go beyond the region, to destabilize the region, to affect more countries. In their opinion, the more countries are involved in the war, the greater the risk of a major war and, in fact, the use of nuclear weapons," Kusa says.

Russia, according to analysts, is afraid of China and ideally would not want to depend on it, but has no other choice. If we imagine that Moscow crosses the red lines or China decides that it is now more profitable for it to join the Western majority and start supporting Ukraine at least in the political arena, Russia will have a hard time.

It will take Moscow some time to find new trading partners and reorient the market. Some of Russia's flows may be able to be transferred through Central Asia. That is, the sharp absence of Chinese support will certainly not work immediately, but it will inevitably lead to a collapse for Russia - the corridor of possibilities will narrow significantly, the amount of resources needed for the war will decrease, and, accordingly, the Russian army will either have to take a stand in a blind defense and forget about any offensive, or urgently initiate negotiations.

Unfortunately, this probability is very small. China will not deviate from its current rhetoric, at least not in these circumstances. "Over the past two years, Russia has committed thousands of crimes - the Bucha massacre, nuclear blackmail, the blowing up of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam, shelling of civilian infrastructure, the killing of civilians, women, and children - none of which has shaken Beijing's cooperation with Moscow. That is why I would not indulge in vain illusions but would proceed from the realities. In the political sphere, all the leading international relations have long been determined, and their positions are unlikely to change," Riabikin adds.

Experts call China's confrontation with the United States more inert and based on a certain ideology than sworn. Today Western countries are not doing enough to convince Xi Jinping to leave Russia. Meanwhile, it is possible that China's refusal to engage in such an alliance could be one of the decisive factors in Ukraine's victory.
