I feel really bad as I went on this trip a few years ago however, since the pandemic, I've seen images of NZ and it reminded me of my amazing experience. I really can't praise Flying Kiwi highly enough. Everyone from the staff who helped me with my online booking to everyone throughout the 3 week trip. You really feel like a family, everyone is so nice and welcoming. I have too many highlights to mention. NZ is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. When we are past the Covid-19 pandemic please book a place and go. You won't regret it.

Matthew Gray, Summer Blast South Island Tour, 2018

New Zealand Central Otago Lake Landscape

The all-natural theme park

New Zealand is an adventure sports junkie's dream. The Tolkien-worthy landscape seems tailor made for adrenaline, and the country that invented bungee jumping takes their adventure seriously. A magical landscape of wild snow-capped mountains, shining lakes, and roaring rivers serves as a giant playground filled with world-class "tramping," skiing, and rafting. When you're done, marvel at the thermal wonders of Rotorua or set out in search of whales and dolphins. While there may be more sheep than people, the friendly English-speaking Kiwis will make you wish there were more of them.

What people love about Active Tours in New Zealand

Everyday was different. A well planned out tour giving a rich experience. You want to know what Maori culture is in a short time? This is it!!!!!!
One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
This tour is excellent for anyone wanting a quick trip to see all the major spots in the South Island. Heaps of amazing activities that you can do. Highly recommend going for walks at each spot to find all the hidden gems. :)

Who Are Backyard Roadies?

The team behind it.

Backyard Roadies is a small, locally owned and operated tour operator that is passionate about showing travelers the best of New Zealand. We are the only 100% NZ-owned and operated small group tour operator. We’re a small team that is passionate about showing off the best of our backyard to the world! Unlike the big corporate tour companies, we’re not driven by money or profit! Our core values are based around connection – with the land, with ourselves, and with the people.

Traveling on a Backyard Roadies tour means getting on an authentic, grounded, and awesome road trip led by a team of passionate and enthusiastic guides . We are dedicated to helping other small tourism businesses and communities around the country. In the wake of COVID-19 where larger corporates and multinational travel groups pulled back, we dove in head first to rediscover and connect with New Zealand, from the Far North to the Deep South – all the people, places, and stories in our own Backyard.

Feedback from our guests

Backyard Roadies overall was a great experience. I felt the tour guides Hannah and Jason truly cared, were responsible, took interest and owned up to their role. The whole concept of it not being a “party bus tour” but more of an experience to see, connect and learn was a key reason for me to choose BR and it really made a difference.

Annabel, 29,

United kingdom.

I think it was probably one of the best 10 days of my life. I have met the best people, in the most incredible place, experiencing the most amazing things. I have faced so many fears and pushed myself out of my comfort zone so much – all with the kind encouragement of the group and Ben. I will treasure the memories of this trip forever

This trip has been a blast I have loved every second of it and I wish I could do it all over again! The accommodation was really good at every stop the drives were beautiful I loved all the places we stopped and explored. Ben is the most fun tour guide and he was so passionate and enthusiastic about showing us the South Island .

Daniel, 28,

I’ve had the most amazing time with Backyard Roadies and have created so many memories. The itinerary has been bang on and everything I wanted to do before coming to the North Island, was included. I also liked how it wasn’t a really big group, therefore you are able to form bonds and friendships with the other people on tour easily.

Celina, 28,

The South Island explorer trip was so good! Ben was amazing throughout the whole experience! He told us some interesting and quirky stories and history about majority of the places we went to and was very helpful with what to do and see during the travels. Also really liked that Maori culture-related activities was included. Would go again!!

Claire, 26,

Hannah was very kind and caring! She always makes sure everyone is okay. It was a pleasure to travel with her. The fact that we were in a small group was very nice. The itinerary gave me a great overview of the North Island in a few days.

I had the best time on this trip and did things I never thought i would do. I have met people that I will be friends with for life. I loved everything about this tour including all the scenic drives and adventures along the way. Our Tour guide Ben was absolutely amazing showing us through his beautiful country.

Katerina, 22,

I’m so glad that I went on my first solo trip with Backyard Roadies! Ben was the most amazing tour guide, every day was packed full of new adventures and experiences. The small group size was also really great! Would recommend this to everyone

I enjoyed every second of this trip. I’ve met some amazing people. Due to the small size of the group  we became pretty close really fast. The Tour Guide was not only the driver and organiser she was a part of the group and the little family we formed aswell. I think I don’t have to talk too much about the country, it is just stunning and with you guys we already saw a lot.

Best travel agency I’ve ever been travelling with! I’ve travelled Australia with an agency and liked that experience too. But it is by far not comparable to backyard roadies. Feels like travelling with friends as even your guide become like a family as they’re all super kind, trustworthy and helpful.

It was a great experience. Ben – the tour guy showed great passion about the country. It made the whole trip amazing and more fun. Can’t wait to travel with you guys again! Thanks for everything!

Natasha, 27,

This has been an amazing experience! Meeting all the different people and experiencing NZ as a family style road trip. Ben was an outstanding tour guide who made the trip 10x better than I could have imagined. He helped push ourselves to complete activities we wouldn’t usually try.

Patrick, 28,

Overall experience has been fantastic. Ben has been a fantastic tour guide. Very approachable and always answered any questions I had. He was fantastic at suggesting activities for us to do in our spare time and has been great at getting the group to bound together. A great tour guide.

Ramona, 34,

My overall experience was great I really enjoyed it. Ben was fun and it felt like a big group of friends having a roadtrip together. Would recommend it to my friends

Amazing 10 days in the North with the group and hannah! She is a brilliant tour leader, ringing and arranging everything so we could fit all our optional activities around the included ones! Loved the Maori experience and the hangi, and enjoyed everyday!

I just absolutely loved this tour. Ben was the greatest person to have as our tour guide, as a friend and an older brother. He made this a lifetime-experience. His effort, his entertainment, his patience and passion. Please keep him forever.

It was a fantastic way to see the South Island and I will never forget it! The small group size really made my experience so much better and allowed us to make a little family.

Had the most amazing time, I got to do a bunch of fun activities at my own pace and had a ball! Getting to experience local New Zealand attractions and taking in the cultural parts were definitely a highlight of the trip, and something I wouldn’t have done if I’d planned this trip on my own.

Summer (December to February): This is the peak tourist season in New Zealand. The weather is generally warm, with average temperatures ranging from 20-30°C (68-86°F) in most regions. It's an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, water sports, and exploring the stunning beaches and national parks. Accommodation and attractions can be busier, so it's advisable to book in advance.

Autumn (March to May): Autumn in New Zealand brings milder temperatures, ranging from 15-25°C (59-77°F). The landscapes transform into vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, making it a picturesque time to visit. It's a great season for hiking, wine tours in regions like Marlborough and Central Otago, and enjoying scenic drives through the countryside.

Winter (June to August): Winter in New Zealand offers opportunities for snow sports enthusiasts. The South Island's ski fields, such as Queenstown and Wanaka, attract visitors from around the world. The North Island also has ski areas like Mount Ruapehu. Average temperatures range from 0-15°C (32-59°F) in most regions, but colder temperatures can be experienced in alpine areas. It's important to pack warm clothing and be prepared for occasional rainfall.

"Epic vacation! Looking to partake in adventure activities with other rad people in the most spectacular of settings? Sign up for a tour with Adventure Junkies. The South Island is full of endless stunning lakes and mountains. With these as your backdrop, you can zip line, raft (class 5 rapids), hike, kayak, skydive, bungee jump, rock climb, jet boat and bike to your hearts content....... your stellar guide, is professional, accommodating and organized. As a solo female traveler, I felt safe at all times. All accommodations were clean and comfortable...... one even had an outdoor hot tub. Russ brought us to charming spots for delicious breakfasts and lunches and always had recommendations for great places to grab post activity beers or dinner...... I was heartbroken to say goodbye to NZ and will definitely be returning for another Adventure Junkies tour, regardless of the fact that it is completely across the world from my home."

"Awesome Adventure! Russ took us on an action filled, 10 day adventure on the south island. We were comfortably driven all over the country. Due to his thorough planning of of this package, every aspect of the trip including the best activities, food and lodging were lined up and the trip went flawlessly. Off road biking, hiking, white water rafting, jet boating, zip lining were just a few of the days adventures. He told us about the country and took us places that only the locals would know. Russ bent over backwards to accommodate everyone and make this the trip of a lifetime. I would not hesitate of recommend Adventure Junkies to all my friends."

  • Brian, January 2019

"My husband and I went to Queenstown, we have been several times before, but this time was an incredible experience, adventure junkies made our trip so easy, and much more fun as it was all organised, we did so many different things. Our tour guide Russ was awesome really neat guy, if we were going to go to Queenstown again i will be doing this again for sure."

  • Cherie, December 2020

"Wow. Don’t miss these guys for a brilliant experience. I’ve travelled around the globe, last count about 35 countries and I have never had a more dedicated guide and service provider or a greater quality of service anywhere. Russ is the best! Amazing experiences, brilliant fun and a fantastic balance between casual and funny raconteur and professional guide. I bet you could do any of the experiences he provides and it would be magnificent. I did Routeburn canyoning, Rangitata rafting, multiple hikes, zip lining, etc all fantastic. Even time between gigs was fun. Great accommodations and wonderful attention to all the details with flexibility when needed. Hats off to you Russ. You Rock!"

adventure tours nz

Its a well kept secret but New Zealand is one of the best off road driving destinations in the world and certainly one of the most easily accessible. If you prefer four wheel driving and the back country, New Zealand has a range of off road driving opportunities which will amaze you. Imagine the clear fresh mountain air of the South Island high country, ever changing and stunning views, crystal clear mountain streams and off road tracks you don't have to share with anyone else except possibly some livestock and the occasional stockman.

Here at NZ Adventures you will experience first hand what New Zealand has to offer well off the well worn tourist routes. The azure blue water of the alpine lakes, the hardy fine wooled Merino sheep flocks, countless ranges of hills, some as emerald green as Ireland and other by way of contrast covered in waving tussock grasslands. On our west coast trips experience the dense rain forests lining the river valleys and surrounding the beautiful lakes.

The 2024 Men’s Health Travel Awards

The absolute best places for adventure, recovery, and relaxation.

THERE'S A WHOLE big world out there. With only so much time to explore it—even less if we're talking just vacation time—where do you go? Maybe you're into meditative retreats with morning yoga sessions, plant-based dining, and nightly aura cleanses. Or maybe snowboarding, mountain-biking, or free-climbing is more your thing. Or, perhaps, you're looking for something more vacation vacation—toes in the sand; a cold drink in hand. Whatever you're into, we got you.

Our expert team of editors and Men's Health advisors spent the last twelve months researching dozens of destinations, accommodations, and tours. We visited every one and narrowed our favorites into three categories— Active, Recovery, and Relax —so you can find the experiences that work for you.

Pack up. Ship out. This is the 2024 Men's Health Travel Awards.
