Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers

I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.

These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.

Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes

I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!

The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.

In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.

Travel Themed Coasters

Travel themed map stone coasters are a great way to add a bit of travel decor to any room. We especially love that these can all be personalized or customized as much as you want. The map design is decoupaged to the stone tile and treated with commercial grade paver sealant on both front and back, and felt backing is applied to the bottom of the coasters.

Custom Travel Slide Lamp Shade

Can you imagine turning your family slides into a gorgeous decoration for your home? That’s exactly what the team at BlinkLab are doing, with their magnificent lamp shades . A great conversation piece and a perfect way to repurpose all those family slides.

Each shade requires 64 standard cardboard mounted photography slides which are affixed together to form the round lampshade. Then a diffusion material is attached to the interior of the shade which gives the slides a beautiful glow and a crystal clear view of the images.

Keep your keepsakes, travel documents, or valuables in this hollow secret safe book that will hide in plain sight on your bookshelf. It is a h ardcover copy of a real book (we have To the Ends of the Earth: The Selected Travels of Paul Theroux ) with its original dustcover that has been hollowed out so there is an inside opening that is 4 7/8 inches wide x 8 long x 15/16 deep. Inserted magnets keep it closed even when it is standing upright.

You can actually get a hollow safe in a number of book titles (including custom requests) and size and shape of hollow can be changed. We have To the Ends of the Earth: The Selected Travels of Paul Theroux, and the one pictured is a collection of stories by Robert Louis Stevenson.

If you want to bring a smile to someone’s face, send them a letter in one of these atlas envelopes . These u pcycled atlas map pages have been handcrafted into letter-sized envelopes. They measure at 9 1/2″ X 4″ although a variety of sizes and recycles papers are available and you can also request custom orders.

We love that these are so well-made and are also making good use of discarded atlases and maps. I still write letters to my grandmother and these travel themed envelopes make it more fun to send a letter. Jennifer has some great products in her store, Paperette Shoppe .

Antique Style Map Pencil & Pen Holder

Add a traditional vintage feel to your desk with these beautiful pencil and pen holders . This little bicycle dish is really cute. This handmade bowl is made of white earthenware clay. The letters and design were stamped with dark brown ink – this one has a bicycle design on outside and word “Wanderlust” along the inner rim. The bowls are fired and covered with a lead free, clear glossy glaze and they can be customized with various colors and larger sizes are available.

Travel Themed Wall Decals 

Each vintage travel stamp  decal is made of high quality self-adhesive matte-finish vinyl. They are also available in a number of colors and sizes, and decals can be customized. They can be applied to many types of clean, flat (or lightly textured), and dry surfaces such as walls, doors, windows, mirrors, wood, and plexiglass. 

We applied these to our bedroom wall in our last bedroom, and enjoyed seeing them every morning when we woke up. We applied these carefully and slowly following the included directions and had no problem. We were also able to remove them a few years later when we moved with no issue.

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

I’ve always wanted to travel the world as a kid my dream job was to be a doctor overseas. I’m a bit sad that I’ve never ventured outside of the United States. My favorite is definitely the book safe! This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!

Stacked Travel Chests

I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.

Suitcase Shelves

I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!

Travel Coasters

If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.

My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!

Wall Clocks

This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.

Word Art and Hangings

You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.

For a limited time, guests who add the Princess Plus package or Princess Premier package to their cruise booking will have that cruise count twice towards loyalty level tier achievement in the Captain’s Circle loyalty program.

Guests sailing on any Princess cruise that departs between August 1, 2024 and December 1, 2024 who add the Princess Plus package OR the Princess Premier package to their booking.  The Princess Plus or Princess Premier package must be added to the booking at least 2 days prior to embarkation day.  All guests, (this includes all U.S. and all non-U.S. resident guests) who meet these criteria are eligible.

Russia’s Golden Ring Cities: the best 10 day itinerary

Due to the current situation, I advice against travel to Russia at the moment. All affiliated links related to Russia have been removed. But I have decided to keep my posts about Russia as it remains a beautiful country. I hope that circumstances change and that travel is possible again in the near future.

In this post about Russia’s Golden Ring cities I will share the ultimate golden ring itinerary. One of the most picturesque and historic parts of Russia. This is the Russia you imagine, with rural villages, wooden houses and onion domed churches set amidst picturesque landscapes.

Russia’s Golden Ring cities are a world away from Moscow. The capital is there to impress you. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes less so. However, Moscow is only one face of Russia. 

Around Moscow you will find Russia’s Golden Ring. A circle of ancient towns from the medieval period that played an important role in the development of the Russian state and the Russian orthodox church. Most of them are on the UNESCO world heritage list because of their ancient monasteries, cathedrals and kremlins. 

Some of Russia’s Golden ring cities are possible to visit as a day trip from Moscow. Others are a destination in itself. They are all connected by public transport and traveling in between them is pretty straightforward and easy.

This Golden Ring itinerary will be a highlight of your trip to Russia and will bring you to the most beautiful Golden ring cities. 

Russia’s Golden Ring cities

There has been a big debate which cities are included within Russia’s Golden Ring. Therefore the Soviets made an official list with Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Some Golden ring itineraries also include smaller towns like Uglich with its ancient Kremlin or Alexandrov, the former residence of Russian princes.

Although each Golden Ring city has its own charms, the architecture is somewhat similar. You will see colorful onion domes, intricate frescoes, and ornate decorations, showcasing the unique Russian style. Therefore it would not make sense to include all of them in your Golden ring itinerary.  

After some background research I decided to focus my own Golden Ring itinerary on the Golden Ring cities of Sergiev Posad, Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Russia’s Golden Ring itinerary   

Day 1 – 4: moscow.

Any Golden ring itinerary starts in Moscow. Russia’s crazy and chaotic capital. Personally, I didn’t particularly like Moscow, yet it is fascinating and has lots of interesting things to do. 4 days in Moscow would be enough to see its major attractions like the Moscow metro , the Red square and the Kremlin . 

Moscow offers a great introduction to Russia and it is a good way to start your Golden Ring itinerary.   

Day 5: Sergiev Posad

Sergiev Posad is either an easy day trip from Moscow or a stop over on your way to Rostov Veliky and Yaroslavl.

Sergiev Posad is probably one of the most important Golden Ring cities, because it is the seat of the Russian orthodox church. In other words, it’s like the Vatican of Russia. It all started with Saint Sergius. He was a hermit that lived in the forests around Sergiev Posad.

Other monks joined him and soon Saint Sergius became their spiritual leader. He built a small wooden church in 1337 and this is how the holy Trinity monastery started. Later Saint Sergius was declared the patron saint of Russia. After that the monastery grew into one of the most important monasteries of Russia. 

The complex has several churches and cathedrals. Each with beautiful and ancient frescoes. It still is an active place of worship and even if you are not religious, watching a Russian orthodox mass is an enchanting experience.

Although this is not included in this Golden Ring itinerary, Sergiev Posad is also a good place from where you can make day trips to the other Golden Ring cities of Alexandrov and Pereslavl Zalessky. 

Alexandrov is where tsar Ivan the terrible lived for 16 years and has an ancient Kremlin with a dark history. It was the center of Ivan’s state policy to repress the elite. Pereslavl Zalessky also has some ancient churches and monasteries. Both are connected by train or bus from Sergiev Posad within an hour. 

Logistics     

How to get there : The easiest way to get from Moscow to Sergiev Posad is by train. I recommend taking one of the frequent local trains that leave almost every hour from Moscow’s Yaroslavsky train station. The journey takes 1.5 hours.

You can continue continue from Sergiev Posad by train to Pereslavl Zalessky (1 hrs), Rostov Veliky (2 hrs) or Yaroslavl (3 hrs) or return to Moscow on a day trip. 

Day trips : Alexandrov, Pereslavl Zalessky

Where to eat : Varenichnaya 9

Day 6 – 7: Yaroslav

Yaroslavl is a rather big town with a scenic location on the Volga river. It’s history goes far back to the 11th century when it was an important economic center in the region. Ivan the Great loved Yaroslavl and the town joined the Moscow state in 1463.  

It’s historic center is on the UNESCO world heritage list , because it is a good example of the city reform plans of Catherine the Great. Although some of its churches and monasteries are older, most buildings are from the 18th and 19th century. 

Therefore Yaroslavl is an interesting mix reflecting different time periods. Most important, it has a variety of things to do that go beyond its ancient churches and monasteries. Although they are well worth a visit, you might by now, already suffer from an overdose of religious monuments on your Golden Ring itinerary.   

Highlights of Yaroslavl include the scenic walks you can take along the Volga river embankment, feasting on dumplings in the first Soviet pelmeni restaurant (Podbelka) and filling your stomach with delicious Russian pies at Shtolle. For Soviet enthusiasts, there is also an impressive House of Soviets, a Lenin statue and a small monument to Tereshkova, the first woman in space.   

Yaroslavl is also a great base to make some day trips to the more scenic and rural Golden Ring cities. Rostov Veliky and Kostroma with its picturesque ancient kremlins are about an hour away by train or bus. A bit further is Uglich. 

Sights : Walking along the embankment, Church of Elijah the prophet, House of the Soviets, Annunciation cathedral, Saint john the baptist church, Tereshkova monument, Lenin statue, Monastery

How to get there : Yaroslavl and Moscow are connected by train in 3 to 4 hours. 

Day trips : Rostov veliky, Kostroma, Uglich

Where to eat : Buffet number 1, Shtolle, Podbelka

Day 8: day trip to Rostov Veliky

My time was limited and therefore I could only make one day trip from Yaroslavl. I chose Rostov Veliky.

Together with Suzdal it was one of the most picturesque places on my Golden Ring itinerary. Even better, it lacks the touristy atmosphere from Suzdal and its Kremlin was one of the most beautiful I have seen. Add the scenic location on the Nero lake and the picture perfect image of Rostov Veliky is complete.

Rostov Veliky is small though. Outside of its Kremlin and the nearby Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery there isn’t much else to do. Which makes it perfect as a day trip from Yaroslavl or even Moscow (3+ hours by train). 

The 16th century Kremlin is somewhat of an anomaly. Most Kremlins were built to protect the city’s most important buildings. Rostov’s impressive Kremlin walls were made more for show than anything else. The wide gates would allow any enemy to enter easily. 

The kremlin has several ancient cathedrals, a courtyard and a peaceful garden. From the Kremlin it’s a scenic walk along lake Nero to the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery

How to get there : From Yaroslavl it is about 1 hour by train or bus to get to Rostov Veliky. From Moscow it will take more than 3 hours to get there. 

Where to eat : Alyosha Popovich near the Kremlin serves delicious traditional Russian food for reasonable prices.     

Day 9 – 10: Vladimir and Suzdal

Vladimir and Suzdal both developed in the 13th century. Vladimir as an administrative and economic center and Suzdal as the religious heart of the region. Together they are on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the white monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal .  

Vladimir is one of the oldest cities in Russia’s golden ring and was founded by prince Vladimir. It soon became the capital of Russia and enjoyed great wealth and prosperity. It was a golden age in which most of Vladimirs white stone cathedrals and palaces were built. That was until the Mongols destroyed Vladimir in 1238.

Nearby Suzdal is slightly older, but lost its political power to nearby Vladimir. It remained an important religious center though with more monasteries and churches than any other town near Moscow. 

Personally, I found it to be one of the most picturesque places in Russia’s Golden Ring. There is a rural rustic atmosphere that makes it feel like you are travelling back in time.

However, something needs to be noted here. It’s partly a Soviet creation. As they wanted to focus on Suzdal’s tourist potential the Soviets did not allow the construction of new or high rise buildings. They even moved wooden structures from other parts of Russia to Suzdal.

The result is that Suzdal is very touristic, but also very pretty. Furthermore, the historical significance of its 11th century Kremlin and 16th century monasteries is no less. Suzdal’s Kremlin is even older than the Moscow kremlin . 

Suzdal has enough things to see and do for a full day trip from Vladimir or Moscow. A lot of people skip Vladimir, but its historic center is also well worth a visit. Some of its ancient cathedrals survived the Mongol invasion.

How to get there : From Yaroslavl to Vladimir there is no direct train connection. You could either take two fast trains (Yaroslavl – Moscow, Moscow – Vladimir) or a direct bus. There are only a few direct buses and the journey takes 5 hours.

From Moscow to Vladimir there is a high speed train to Vladimir that takes less than 2 hours. 

What to see : Golden gate, Old Vladimir museum (water tower), Borodin blacksmith workshop, Annunciation church, Demetrius cathedral

Where to eat : Mint owl, Pelmenj

Day trips from Vladimir : Suzdal

Logistics Suzdal

How to get there : To get from Moscow to Suzdal you first need to get to Vladimir. In Vladimir you can go to the bus station that is conveniently located across the train station. There is a bus to Suzdal every 30 minutes and the journey is little less than an hour

What to see : Deposition of the robe convent, Alexander male monastery,Monastery of Saint Euthymius, Pokrovski monastery, Kremlin

Where to eat : Chaynaya, Gostiny dvor

After Russia’s Golden Ring cities

This Golden ring itinerary of Russia stops in Vladimir. After that you can either return to Moscow or continue your journey in Russia.

From Vladimir it is only 3 hours to Nizhny Novgorod. It is not part of Russia’s Golden Ring cities, but also has an old Kremlin and is nice to visit.

When to visit.

Russia’s Golden Ring cities are so scenic that every season has it’s own charms. I was there in winter and the thick blanket of snow only made it more like a fairytale.

Obviously spring is lovely with its blooming flowers and autumn brings beautiful colors in the trees. Summer is the peak tourist season in the Golden Ring cities, as the weather is generally warm and pleasant. However, it can get crowded, especially in July and August. This is also when many festivals and events take place, providing an opportunity to witness traditional celebrations and cultural performances.

Accommodation in Russia’s Golden Ring cities

Where to stay in moscow.

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus stand for clean and professional hostels with a mix of dormitories and a limited number of double rooms for good prices. They are often located close to one of the Moscow metro stations making travel in Moscow easy. There is one near Kurskaya and one near Paveletskaya (dorms only).

Vinegret hostel : Vinegret hostel is a clean and nice budget hostel with an excellent location in the heart of Moscow. It is right near Arbatskaya metro station on the famous arbat street. From there you can walk to the red square in only 30 minutes.

Axel hostel : Axel hostel has great budget dormitories with lots of privacy. It has a central location within walking distance of Kitay Gorod.

Where to stay in Sergiev Posad

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus is one of the few hostels in Sergiev Posad. It has clean dormitories and double rooms. It’s a great budget option, but a bit far from everything. That said, it is still within walking distance from the center.

Guest house Shishkina : If you have a bit more money I can recommend the central Guest house Shishkina. The double rooms are lovely and still in the budget category.

Where to stay in Yaroslavl

City hostel : I stayed at City hostel. It’s a great budget place that is centrally located. The rooms were clean and the people were very helpful, despite the language barriers

Zolotoye Koltso : Zolotoye Koltso hostel has great reviews for its small, but clean and cheap rooms and dormitories in the centre of Yaroslavl.

Where to stay in Vladimir

Hostel Belyy Topol : I stayed in hostel Belyy topol. Although the staff didn’t really speak english, they were very helpful. The rooms were clean and the location was very convenient near the train station and in walking distance of the historic sights. 

Hostel Vishnya : Hostel Vishnya is another hostel with good reviews near the train and bus station. It has both dormitories and private rooms for reasonable prices. 

Samovar hostel : Samovar hostel has a scenic location within Vladimirs historic center. It has good reviews because of their clean and spacious dorms and private rooms. 

Where to stay in Suzdal

Suzdal has lots of accommodation options. There are no real backpacker hostels, but you will find some budget guesthouses. 

Patchwork guesthouse : Patchwork guesthouse is a simple guesthouse with a couple of small, but clean double rooms. It is within walking distance of the main sights and has a very friendly and helpful owner

Viktoria Guest house  : Viktoria guesthouse is a good budget option not far from the center with clean rooms

Wow- Russia is definitely one of those countries you need to visit in the winter! The architecture is just so stunning with the white snow!

Winter Palace

Undoubtedly, the Winter Palace is a famous attraction of Saint Petersburg and a must-stop on your visit to Russia .

Being one of the greatest royal residences of the world, today this outstanding palace is one of the 6 buildings housing the Hermitage Museum.

The site incorporates the largest collection of paintings in the world. There are over 3 million works of art and world culture artifacts, and if you only stop by each object for a minute or so, it would still take you several days to get through the main hall! It is not easy to comprehend, you have to see it for yourself!

It is claimed, that the color of the Palace has been changing throughout its history, from warm yellow to a more dense one and even was repainted in red brick color during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II.

Today the facades of the Palace are painted in an emerald-blue, white, and gold colors - nothing but a true treasure on the banks of Neva River, reflecting the majesty of the Russian Empire.

Did You Know? In the times of her rule, Catherine the Great was in need of her own hideaway to rest from public pressure. So she ordered the construction of a new wing of the palace, which she suitably named “the Hermitage.”

Saint Michael's Castle

The unusual architectural phenomenon, the Saint Michael's Castle, is located in the very heart of Saint Petersburg .

This place is claimed to be one of the oddest highlights of the city because of the legends and mysteries associated with it. It’s believed that the spirit of the emperor Paul I is still roaming around the castle's walls.

All the facades of the Mikhailovsky Castle are different. The contemporaries called the interiors of the Palace a miracle of luxury and taste.

Designed by the outstanding architects and sculptors of that time, the ceremonial residence of the emperor also served as a museum of ancient, European, and Russian art. Later, it was transformed into the Army Engineers School and renamed to the Engineer's Castle.

Nowadays, the Mikhailovsky Palace hosts a branch of the Russian Museum. There is a permanent exhibition of the art gallery and the exposition dedicated to the history of the Castle.

Unusual Wall Hue As one of the castle's legends says, the walls got an unusual crimson color after Anna Lopukhina, Paul I's favourite, dropped a glove at a ball. The Emperor liked the color, which meant that the court began to give it preference. Later, Paul sent the glove to the architect as a sample and now we can the result of such life happenings.

Grand Kremlin Palace

The Grand Kremlin Palace , who haven’t heard of it? When on a tour to Moscow , don’t miss a chance to visit its territory and museums. It once served as the residence for Moscow's tsars, today this brilliant complex of rooms and palaces is open for tourists.

Visiting the Palace can be compared with travel back in time as it conserves the spirit of different epochs of Russian history.

Initially, the Palace served as the Moscow residence of Russian emperors and their families. At the present time, the President's inauguration, state ceremonies and hospitable receptions of foreign leaders take place in the lavishly decorated halls.

The composition of the Grand Kremlin Palace is quite peculiar. The territory includes the earlier Terem Palace, nine churches and over 700 rooms.

The luxurious interiors of the halls represent the blend of old Russian, Eastern and Italian architecture so the visit to this gorgeous palace will be a memory of a lifetime.

• All the Kremlin towers have their own names, except for two. These two towers are called the first nameless and the second nameless.
• The Moscow Kremlin is the largest medieval fortress in the world, with an area of more than 27 hectares.
• During the great Patriotic war, only 15 bombs fell on the territory of the Kremlin.

The Nikolaevsky Palace

Located not far away from St. Isaac's Cathedral , the Nikolaevskiy Palace in St. Petersburg it represents a huge neoclassical edifice, built for the Imperial family. The Palace was constructed for the third son of Nicholas I. In 1894 the building was transformed into the Xenia Institute for Noble Young Ladies.

The Nikolaevsky Palace is an architectural ensemble consisting of several buildings and each of them has its own decorative appearance. The simultaneous use of several styles, such as classicism, Italian renaissance, and baroque, adds some special charm. The building is beautifully decorated with sculptural ornaments, columns and pilasters of Ionic and Corinthian orders.

Today the Nikolaevsky Palace bears the name of the Palace of Labour (Dvorets truda) and a large part of the building is rented to commercial enterprises.

The Catherine Palace

A real gem of architecture, the Catherine Palace , is a place that is impossible to cross out your travel list and is a must-visit during St. Petersburg tours . A pompous baroque Palace has a more than 300-year history.

Located 25 km south of St. Petersburg in the town of Pushkin (former Tsarskoye Selo), the Imperial residence was admired by Empress Catherine and played the role of the main center of court life. The Palace oversaw the fanciest balls and masquerades in the country.

The Grand Palace is the compositional center of the Tsarskoye Selo Park. Blue-and-white facades are richly decorated with golden moldings and figures of atlantes, caryatids, and lion masks. All in all, this architectural masterpiece will immerse you in the times of Imperial Russia and is definitely worth your attention.

Set on the Mioka River, The Yusupov Palace is one of the few surviving residences of wealthy families. This location is most famous for one dramatic episode in the history of Russia - the assassination of Grigory Rasputin, who had a lot of influence over the last monarch family of Russia.

The Palace is often called the encyclopedia of St. Petersburg's aristocratic interior. This mansion preserves the front apartments, art gallery, home theater and luxurious residential quarters of the Yusupov family. It's no wonder that it was widely known throughout the nobility of St. Petersburg as balls and receptions, which amazed everyone with luxury and wealth, were constantly held there.

The Peterhof Grand Palace

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries Russian and European geniuses of architecture worked hard on building the majestic Peterhof Grand Palace , laid out on the order of Peter the Great. Often called the "Russian Versailles”, the exquisite palace-ensemble is a part of UNESCO World Heritage.

Decoration of the facades of the building, painted in bright yellow, is marked by restraint as there is nothing superfluous in it. The interior of the palace poses a myriad of halls such as the Blue Reception Room, the Dance Hall, the White Dining Room and so on.

Now, the Grand Palace is a unique historical and art museum with the collection of about three and a half thousand items, including paintings, fabrics, furniture as well as personal belongings of the former owners of the Palace.

The Peterhof Fountains: In total, there are 176 fountains in Peterhof. And about 40 kilometers of canals are laid to serve them. 18 ponds-reservoirs that supply water for the entire network of fountains cover an area of about 100 hectares with a volume of more than 1 million 300 thousand cubic meters..

1. Madonna Inn , San Luis Obispo

This larger-than-life motel ticks all the boxes: themed rooms housing treasured relics of Americana; a colour palette dominated by Barbie pink; floral shagpile; Disney-esque turrets; fuchsia tennis courts; and gold chandeliers. Sitting at the midway point between San Francisco and LA, a short drive from downtown San Luis Obispo and its surrounding wineries, it has attained cult status for its design since it opened in 1958, courtesy of owners Phyllis and Alex Madonna.

With seemingly more stage sets than a Hollywood backlot, this maximalist motel has 110 themed rooms in all, no two of which are alike. The Yahoo Room has a bed atop a wagon; the Caveman Room is swathed in rock with decorative clubs; and the Matterhorn Room features a vintage cow bell and the Swiss Alps rendered in stained glass. Come nightfall, rum punch cocktails garnished with glossy red cherries slide across the bar towards elderly regulars, many of whom have stayed in every room over the years, and the crop of young newcomers who have discovered the charms of the motel online. Don’t miss the adjacent steakhouse, where filet mignon and lobster tails can be enjoyed in a circular pink booth, under the watchful eye of gilded cherubs. From $200 (£159) per night.

2. The Victorian Mansion , Los Alamos

On the outside, this turreted inn in Santa Barbara wine country looks like a traditional B & B. But behind its mellow yellow exterior lies a secret kitsch interior. Six themed suites mean travellers can choose between drifting off in a Cadillac, a Roman chariot or a four-poster beside a life-size Egyptian sarcophagus. Over 200 craftspeople spent almost a decade creating this work of art. From $245 (£194), B & B.

3. Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa , Napa Valley

This nostalgic Napa hideaway looks set to revive the retro motor lodge for a new cohort of road-trippers. Originally built in the Wine Country in the 1940s, the roadside retreat has been updated with nature-inspired interiors, three geothermal pools fed by hot springs and a spa where guests can enjoy mud baths. From $248 (£196).

4. The Astro , Santa Rosa

A relic of the Atomic Age, the Astro was once part of a chain of space-themed hotels. Having eventually fallen from grace to a rent-by-the-hour low, it rose from the ashes in spectacular fashion in 2018. Interiors again nod to the 1950s, with white leather banquettes, record players and signs for defunct soft drinks. From $155 (£123), B & B.

5. The Ace Hotel and Swim Club , Palm Springs

This motel in the shadow of Palm Springs’ San Jacinto mountains has been offering weary drivers sanctuary since the 1960s, but in recent years it has become a destination in its own right. The mid-century mood is preserved with Flintstone-style boulder walls, while upgrades include spacious boho-chic suites styled like bell tents and raucous entertainment such as poolside drag bingo.
