Nerves on the first tee – we’ve all had them. Even two-time major winners such as John Daly.

We’ve long become accustomed to JD hitting tape-measure drives, which is what made the following swing so startling. On Friday, the 57-year-old got off to an inauspicious start, topping his opening tee shot during the first round of the 2024 Hoag Classic, a PGA Tour Champions event held at Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, California.

We’ve pretty much seen it all from The Wild Thing during his rollercoaster career but topping his opening tee shot may have been a first. Daly looked anxious to hit and nearly did so before the first-tee announcer had a chance to call his name. Daly backed off the tee shot when his name was announced and re-started his routine. Daly made “Grip it and Rip it,” a household catchphrase among golfers and led the PGA Tour in driving distance 11 times, but Long John was short of the forward tees with his dribbler off the tee, at least on this occasion.

Daly, who has been struggling with injuries all season, shot 74-75 and was in last place out of the field of 77 heading into Sunday’s final round. Earlier this season, Daly needed an injection in his left hand after his osteoarthritis flared up, and he shot 87 at an event in Morocco. But no matter what, Daly always entertains. The video below shows his one-of-a-kind pre-round warm-up routine. Unfortunately, it turns out he wasn’t ready to roll this week, unless they were referring to his opening topped shot, which is destined for a long future in golf bloopers. Here’s hoping better days are ahead for Big John.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — John Daly held on to win the Insperity Invitational on Sunday for his first PGA Tour Champions title.

Daly bogeyed the final three holes for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke victory over Kenny Perry and Tommy Armour III.

John Daly gets first PGA Tour Champions victory at Insperity Invitational

Long john has been on the senior circuit for a while, but this is his first win.

He kissed the painted umbrella on the grass honoring Arnold Palmer as he walked up the 18th fairway, and then he two-putted from 60 feet for his first PGA Tour Champions victory. John Daly took home his first grand prize on the senior circuit by shooting 69 in the final round of the Insperity Invitational to beat Tommy Armour III by a single stroke.

Daly shot scores of 68 and 65 to open the tournament and finished at 14 under overall.

Daly, who many presumed would rock the senior tour because of how long he still is off the tee, has struggled to this point. In his first 21 events, he did not notch any top-10 finishes. Until Sunday.

Rocking American flag pants Sunday, Daly got his first official victory on any tour since 2004 when he won the Buick Invitational. He did it the easy way, too. After building his lead early, Daly finished bogey-bogey-bogey to shoot the 69.

"Some guys come out here and win right off the bat, get the monkey off their back, but now I can say I'm a champion on the PGA Tour Champions," Daly told the PGA Tour after his win . "It's really cool and hopefully I can keep this confidence going."

PGA Champions Tour: John Daly wins first tournament in 13 years at Insperity Invitational

John Daly won a tournament wearing American flag pants.

JOHN Daly ended a 13-year drought when he posted his first victory on the 50-and-over Champions Tour, scoring a one-stroke triumph at the Insperity Invitational in Texas.

Cutting an unmistakeable figure in red, white and blue American flag pants, Daly tapped in his winning putt from one inch to finish at 14-under-par 202 at The Woodlands outside Houston.

“It’s awesome,” Daly told Golf Channel after being doused in champagne on the 18th green.

“Hey, a win’s a win. I hung in there and did the best I could. It wasn’t pretty at the end but I got it done. That’s all that matters.”

Coming down the final hole, Daly gave tribute to the late Arnold Palmer, kissing the Palmer flag logo on the fairway and saluting the heavens.

Daly closed with three bogeys in a row but fired a final-round three-under par 69 to win the 54-hole event with a 14-under par 202 total at The Woodlands, edging US compatriots Kenny Perry and Tommy Armour III by a stroke.

Daly, nicknamed ‘Wild Thing’ by the British tabloids in the 1990s due to his hard-partying lifestyle, won five times on the PGA Tour, including two major championships, the 1991 PGA and 1995 British Open.

Daly was the longest hitter on tour for the first part of his career, in an era before metal-headed drivers became commonplace.

The 51-year-old Daly became eligible for the Champions Tour last April. He had not won on the PGA Tour since 2004, losing a playoff to Tiger Woods at the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship.

LONG SHOT Daly went from ninth alternate to major champion at the 1991 PGA. Photo from PGA Tour Archive via Getty Images.

John Daly will always be remembered for being one of the great Cinderella stories in the history of golf. In addition, it’s doubtful we will ever see a two-time major champion who fits the description “a man of the people” more emphatically than J.D. When I caught up with him in April at the Insperity Invitational, where he tied for second, he had a full-length beard that had him looking more like Santa Claus than the raw-boned kid from Arkansas who 30 years ago this summer stunned the world by winning the PGA Championship as the ninth al- ternate into the field. J.D. is 55 now, and this past year has been a tough one, as he revealed he has been battling bladder cancer. But his colorful demeanor, big game and commitment to helping others remain intact.

How’s your health? Your bladder cancer diagnosis in September 2020 has a lot of people very concerned about you.

We’re getting there. I’m feeling OK. We caught it early, which is great. I’ve had two rounds of chemo, and the last test shows the cancer at the moment is benign. I go back for testing in October, and if it’s benign at that point, I go back for testing once a year for five years.

It has been 30 years since that magical week at Crooked Stick and the 1991 PGA Championship. What’s the first thing you think about when it comes to your mind?

I think of the Boys & Girls Club. It’s been 30 years since I became involved with that, and it happened because I won at Crooked Stick. We’ve done great things with that not only in Russellville and Dardanelle in the Arkansas River Valley, but others as well. We’ve poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into them over the years, and they’ve made a difference. I’m proud of that.

The story of your winning is so rich.

It’s one of the great underdog stories in all of sports. Take us back and put us in the middle of it. When did you get the phone call that you had a chance to get in as the ninth alternate?

We were in Memphis, and I had just bought a house in Germantown, Tenn., with my first wife, Bettye. We weren’t married yet. I had just taken out a loan for a BMW. I had made $162,000 on the PGA Tour in 1991 and had secured my card for 1992. Life was good, and I was really happy. Then Nick Price called to tell me his wife, Sue, was ready to have their baby and that he was withdrawing and that I might get to play at Crooked Stick. Nick offered to have his caddie, Squeaky—that’s Jeff Medlin, who passed away in 1997—caddie for me. I was like, “Oh, man, yeah.” We drove 10 hours to Indiana on Wednesday and got in at 1 a.m. on Thursday. The light on my hotel phone was blinking, and I got the news. I had made it into the field.

Your game obviously was in very good shape.

On my second hole of the first round, Squeaky looked at me a little surprised and said, “Man, you hit it good.” He caddied for Nick Price, one of the best ball-strikers ever, so he would know. I said, “Yeah, and I’m hitting my driver really good.” I was pounding it, and straight, too. Squeaky said there was no trouble on the course I couldn’t carry, and I formed my strategy right there. I told him we were going to hit driver every time, and I did.

The distance you drove the ball got everyone’s attention. From my place in the CBS booth, I remember our commentators raving about your power.

It wasn’t just the driver. On the first par 5 I played, my tee shot left me 202 to the hole. I asked Squeaky, “What would Nick hit here?” Squeaky said, “A cut 4-iron, or a big, hooking 5.” I said, “Give me the 8-iron.” I hit it pin high and Squeaky, in that high voice that gave him his nickname, said, “OK, we’re four clubs longer than Nick. Got it.” I remember club selection being real easy after that.

You shot 69 in the third round and finished with a 71 to win by three over Lietzke. The scene of you coming up 18, pumping and waving your fist, revving up the fans, is indelible to this day.

You followed that opening 69 with a 67 to take a one-shot lead. Do you remember who you played with? Bob Lohr and Billy Andrade during the first two days—super guys. Bruce Lietzke in the third round. Bruce was an awesome ball striker, a lot shorter than me but a machine. He just didn’t miss fairways. The final round I was paired with Kenny Knox. Bruce was one hole ahead.

The story quickly became about you, this unknown coming out of nowhere to contend at a major. Did you feel the pressure?

I didn’t care. All I knew was that the fans were loving it, and they were behind me in a huge way. Saturday night, I had to ice my right hand. I had high-fived so many fans going from green to tee and signing autographs, it was killing me.

It was such a blur. Four days seemed like a minute. It didn’t hit me until I got to Colorado for The International the next week. The crowds outside the clubhouse were packed, waiting for me to come out, and the tournament hadn’t even started. Only then did I realize that what I’d done at Crooked Stick was a big deal.

Would you call it the greatest moment of your career?

To be honest, winning the British Open in 1995 at St. Andrews was more special. By then, there was pressure to win again. Life had changed. The history of St. Andrews and being surrounded by the blue-collar people like me who came out over there really got to me. It was just different than Crooked Stick and harder to do, so big picture it meant more. But I don’t know how you compare these things.

One thing that impressed me at Crooked Stick was what you did when you received the winner’s check for $230,000. You were far from a rich man at that point in your career, yet you donated $30,000 to the family of a man who had been killed by lightning earlier in the week. Where does your big heart come from?

I came from a small town in Arkansas and didn’t have much growing up. I’ve always felt for the little guy out there, kids especially. On Saturday I read the news about the guy dying. I learned he had been on the course watching me and was struck by lightning as he got back to his car to leave. He was 39. It was such a sad thing to read about, especially that he had two young daughters. I guess it stayed with me because I did make that $30,000 gift. Years later, I went back to Indiana to play in Fuzzy Zoeller’s charity tournament and met the family I’d helped. One of the man’s daughters became a doctor and the other became a lawyer, and they have kids of their own. It made me feel so good, and it’s why I’m involved with charities to this day.

What is the most misunderstood thing about you?

People think I’m a slob, but I might be the neatest guy on the planet, in an almost OCD way. My shirts have to be hung in order, color-wise and have to hang a certain way using a particular type of wood hanger oriented in a certain way. I vacuum and do dishes like a maniac. It drives my girlfriend, Anna, a little nuts.

RECOVERY ROAD Daly says he doesn’t plan to shave his beard until he has been cancer-free for six months.

Mike Ehrmann

Any regrets about your career?

I shouldn’t have chased the money like I did. I’d go overseas and play for three weeks, then fly back and play five in a row in the U.S. I was tired a lot, and I think it kept me from winning more. Fuzzy, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus all warned me about that, but I didn’t listen. The ironic thing was, I’ve never been obsessed with money. To me, it was about winning trophies. But damn, when an appearance fee overseas guarantees you’re going to make triple what you could make here, it’s hard to turn down.

What does money mean to you today?

Not a damn thing.

You have five PGA Tour wins, including two major championships. Should you be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame one day?

I wish the fans could decide that rather than a committee. If it were up to the fans, I probably would make it in. A committee, I’m not so sure.

Bryson DeChambeau and his pursuit of distance is a big story. What are your thoughts?

The way he uses science is cool, and I can’t help but imagine him and me in my best years having a distance rivalry—a smart kid from California doing it through equipment, nutrition and physical conditioning, and a redneck from Arkansas doing it my natural way. It would have taken the excitement about driving the ball to another level.

Who’s longer, Bryson or John Daly?

If Bryson were hitting a balata ball and persimmon driver, the John Daly of old would fly it 40 yards past him. On the other hand, if the 1991 version of me were using the modern clubs and balls alongside Bryson, he would fly it 40 by me. See, our swings and technique are different and tailored for the equipment of our time.

Everyone is pulling for you to get better. We want the John Daly story to continue for years to come.

Months ago, I started growing a beard and promised I wouldn’t shave it off until I had a clean bill of health. After the test in early April showed the cancer was benign, Anna asked me to shave off the beard. I told her no; we had to wait until the test in October came back clear. So if you see me with a clean face on Halloween, you’ll know it’s all good.

PGA Championship: John Daly withdraws before second round after rough start, thumb injury

John daly, citing a thumb injury, pulled out of the pga championship on friday morning.

After a rough opening day at Valhalla Golf Club, John Daly called it on Friday morning.

Daly withdrew from the PGA Championship ahead of his second round due to a thumb injury. It’s unclear how severe that injury is, or if Daly injured his thumb while playing on Thursday.

Daly struggled on Thursday at Valhalla. He opened with three straight bogeys and went 7-over on his front nine. He finished with an 11-over 82, which dropped him almost to the bottom of the leaderboard completely.

In true Daly fashion, though, he was enjoying himself out on the course.

I overheard the volunteer with John Daly’s group say that he went through two packs of cigarettes, four Snickers bars and two Cokes today at Valhalla. Had to share. — Gabby Herzig (@GabbyHerzig) May 16, 2024

Daly, 58, now largely plays on the PGA Tour Champions and rides in a cart due to injuries. He won five times in his career on the PGA Tour, including at both the 1991 PGA Championship and the British Open in 1995.

Daly has one PGA Tour Champions win to his name, back at the Insperity Invitational in 2017. He’s made seven appearances on that circuit this season, but he hasn't finished better than 65th.

Daly has not made a cut at a major championship since 2018.

Daly would have had to mount an incredible comeback on Friday in order to make the cut this week. Xander Schauffele put up a course-record 62 on Thursday , which gave him a three-shot lead over the field at 9-under. Play was delayed on Friday morning by about 90 minutes after a fatal accident outside of the course. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler was arrested in a separate incident, too, though he was released and returned in time to tee off in the second round .

Defending Champion Koepka gets Practice Round in with John Daly

Past PGA Championship winners Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023) and John Daly (1991) shared a special moment on Wednesday, playing a practice round together. Despite the significant age gap and the fact that Koepka was just a one-year-old when Daly won the Wanamaker Trophy, the pair have forged a close friendship over recent years.

"JD is the man," Koepka said. "I've always loved being around him. He's gotten close with my dad, as well. What was it, Bethpage? Him and my dad hung out for a while, and my dad got to come out and watch me until probably about the back nine.”

🚨 Defending Champion @BKoepka has arrived at Valhalla 🚨 #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/X60kHL6DTn — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 13, 2024

The two text each other consistently to stay in touch. Amidst Koepka's intense preparation during a major week, the pair tries to play a practice round together. Last year, they played nine together ahead of the Open Championship. The time together provides a rare moment of relaxation for Koepka, 34, ahead of the PGA Championship.

"I've heard from just kind of the people around me, it's just different," Koepka said. "Like my demeanor and focus is just different [at majors]. I can't explain it. I don't really know how to or what I really do different.

"But everybody on the team can kind of see it and they kind of know I can walk right past them and I don't even know that they are there sometimes. It's just it's a grinding week. You've got to be fully locked in. I feel like you can't take one shot off."

Koepka will start his title defense off Thursday at 8:37 AM.

PGA Senior Championship, John Daly

John Daly attempted to play in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship this weekend, a week after missing the 105th PGA Championship . After 13 holes, he chose to withdraw from the tournament and took to Twitter to blast the PGA of America for their tee boxes.

“So hard to play tee boxes that are down grade. Golf course is great but I wish they would make their tee boxes level! We are not young anymore!! Some guys are ADA and we can not follow through on down hill tee boxes!! I’m sorry @PGA you are going the wrong way in golf but I love y’all. But you are making holes really really long.. St Andrew’s never had a downhill tee box. Quit while your NOT ahead…. Thank you 13,” Daly tweeted.

He included an image of his legs looking aged with his left knee appearing to be swollen.

The Senior PGA Championship is playing the Fields Ranch East course at the PGA’s new headquarters in Frisco, TX. However, the tee boxes did not match the 1991 PGA Champion’s standard.

As someone who has had a lot of injuries and is rehabbing a knee replacement surgery, Daly let the PGA have a piece of his mind. Of course, Daly’s eating habits likely don’t help him.

The 57-year-old is no stranger to being blunt. In 2018, he worked with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) because the US Seniors Open refused to give him a cart to use during the round, per GolfMonthly. His health continues to be in the news in recent years, with his bladder cancer diagnosis in 2020 and now having both knees replaced.

Daly competed in the first senior major of the year at the Regions Tradition, where he finished T65.

Did John Daly flip a golf cart at a PGA Tour Champions event last week?

Left: Getty Images; Right: @tcgillis on X

It has been a long time since John Daly was lighting up PGA Tour courses for big checks, but the two-time major winner and golf legend continues to find ways to grab our attention.

Just a few weeks ago, the 57-year-old Daly was filmed kicking perfect field goals on a football field — barefoot.

He's still got it. @PGA_JohnDaly took a quick field goal break during the @AscensionCCG Pro-Am 🏈🦶 https://t.co/U4K2tmMfsl pic.twitter.com/3lnJyn1EjT — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) September 6, 2023

But the latest incident happened on a golf course during a pro event. On Monday, former PGA Tour pro and current PGA Tour Champions player Tom Gillis posted a photo on X that shows a golf cart turned over on its side with several people gathered around it.

Most interesting is the person who is pictured standing inside the flipped cart. While we don’t have official confirmation, that person appears to be none other than John Daly.

Rubbing is racing! 🤦‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/fkKm3XlKK1 — Tom Gillis (@tcgillis) September 18, 2023

Beyond physical similarities (including the white/blond hair), the person in question is wearing what Daly wore during last Friday’s opening round of the Sanford Invitational at Minnehana Country Club in South Dakota.

Furthermore, a caddie is seen walking in the foreground with the name “DALY” splashed across the back of his caddie bib.

Daly has a long history of using golf carts in pro events. The PGA Tour Champions, which is restricted to players above 50, began allowing players to use golf carts in most events in 2006, and Daly makes use of that rule regularly due to health issues.

John Daly’s cart got stuck at the PGA Championship — and then fans came to the rescue

While carts are prohibited on the PGA Tour and at the majors, Daly was also granted a medical exemption to use a golf cart at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black due to osteoarthritis in his right knee that prevents him from walking too many holes.

That week on Long Island, even Tiger Woods couldn’t resist poking fun at Daly’s cart , joking, “As far as JD taking a cart? Well,” Tiger said, before pausing as a wide grin broke across his face. “I walked with a broken leg, so…”

This is not even the first time Daly was involved in a golf-cart incident at a pro event.

At the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, Daly was once again granted permission to use a cart. As Daly was leaving the par-3 17th hole during the opening round, his cart got stuck in a soft patch of sand . He only escaped with the help of some onlookers, who pushed the cart from behind until Daly was free.
