A little bit about South Luangwa

Very few places in Africa can offer the unique combination of South Luangwa National Park's open, grassy plains and mature, mesmerizing woodlands, crowned with the pristine, impressive Luangwa River. This area's reputation for abundant wildlife and unspoiled vegetation is well earned, so whether driving around or walking through, the intense beauty calls to you from every corner.

South Luangwa National Park is the highlight of eastern Zambia. Known to locals as simply 'the South Park,' it was initially founded as the Luangwa Game Park in 1904, and converted to one of three game reserves in 1938. The impressive park covers an area of about 9050 square kilometers of the Luangwa Valley floor, and lies anywhere from 500 meter to 800 meter above sea level. With its western and northwestern edge bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment, and the southern border lined with the meandering Luangwa River, there's no shortage of dramatic and fascinating topography in this stunning game-rich park.

luangwa valley safari

It is easy to understand why the symbolism attached to valleys is similar across cultures and continents. They are places that represent life and beauty – inspiring artists, poets and musicians. For the more practically-minded, valleys are sheltered places of safety, guarded by mountains and made fertile by rivers and streams flowing from their slopes. Luangwa Valley is the perfect African example – a vast Zambian wilderness; a playground for tourists seeking an authentic, unfussy safari experience.

It is rugged unspoilt, and best explored on foot in the company of some of Africa’s best guides.

Luangwa Valley

A river runs through it

Life in the Luangwa Valley centres around the Luangwa River and its rich floodplains that spill over into the surrounding plains, savannas and woodlands. The eponymous river is one of Zambia’s most extensive, rising in the north-eastern corner of the country and meandering south-west before flowing into the Zambezi River. As part of the tail-end of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the ancient tectonic forces that shaped the landscape laid the foundations for spectacular scenery. The magnificent Muchinga Mountains form an escarpment that plunges some 700m to the valley floor, which reaches a width of up to 100km wide. The river changes its course regularly when in flood, creating new oxbow lakes and hairpin bends for the hippos to occupy in their hundreds.

There are four national parks within the Luangwa Valley: South Luangwa National Park (SLNP), North Luangwa National Park (NLNP), Luambe National Park (Luambe NP) and Lukusuzi National Park (Lukusuzi NP). These are surrounded by numerous unfenced Game Management Areas and, with the Mid-Zambezi Valley, the ecosystem covers a relatively undisturbed 70,000km 2 of wilderness.

The rich and vibrant habitats are home to some of the highest densities of wildlife in Zambia. According to the Zambian Carnivore Programme , this section of eastern Zambia boasts the largest lion population in the country and the second largest population of African painted wolves. The region is also home to a Luangwa endemic: the Thornicroft’s giraffe ( suspected subspecies of the Masai giraffe) . Other Zambian specialities include the Cookson’s wildebeest (a subspecies of the blue wildebeest) and the Crawshay’s zebra (a subspecies of the plains zebra).

luangwa valley safari

On foot in the valley

Luangwa is often referred to as the home of the walking safari, and the region was among the first places on the continent to offer walking safaris. Game warden, conservationist, and travel-pioneer Norman Carr famously believed that it was impossible to know an area without exploring it properly on foot. Generations of expert guides have followed in his footsteps, trained to embrace the same ethos and appreciation for the wild as the first walking guides.

There is a twinge of adrenaline heading out on foot into the presence of Africa’s most revered (and potentially dangerous) animals. The genuine value, however, lies in the complete nature immersion. For most, the ordinary human senses are dulled by overstimulation and frenetic schedules. So, it is almost astonishing how, when in the company of an expert guide, it is suddenly possible to revert to a far more primal state of awareness. The sudden amplification of sound, smell and touch (and fear) can be profoundly grounding.

What is more, the Luangwa Valley is a biodiversity hotspot. Rather than hoping for an encounter with a big animal (which will likely happen regardless), revel in the small things. Appreciate the morning light catching the dew of a perfect spider web or marvel at the tenacity of a dung beetle in action. Stop to admire the intricate network of veins in an elephant track and the careful construction of a batis nest or run a hand over the rough bark of an ancient ebony tree. The magic of the Luangwa Valley is so overwhelming that it takes time to soak in fully.

Luangwa Valley

South Luangwa National Park

The largest of the valley’s four national parks, SLNP, is also the most popular (though it remains almost entirely unspoilt and operates at relatively low tourist densities). The Muchinga Escarpment borders the 9,059km2 (90,000 hectare) park along its western and northern edges, while much of the infrastructure centres around the Luangwa River and its many tributaries. As a general rule, the Mfuwe area is the park’s busiest, and sightings can become somewhat frenetic during the high season. The Nsefu sector of the park is quieter and more remote, offering a more exclusive feel.

Along with enormous herds of elephants and buffaloes, SLNP is renowned for its dazzling leopard sightings, and visitors are regularly treated to more than one leopard in a day. SLNP is also home to one of the most well-known elephant herds in the world. These brazen pachyderms famously return year after year to snack on the wild mangos in Mfuwe Lodge. The herds merrily stride through the reception area, oblivious to the amazement of guests and staff (or perhaps simply accepting it as their due).

Just before the start of the rainy season in November, the park’s skies are filled with flashes of pink as the carmine bee-eaters return for the summer. These gloriously coloured birds nest in holes excavated in sandbanks, and appreciative guests can while away the hours at a hide watching the flashing colours as the birds prepare for the breeding season. (Have a look at this wonderful trip report for an account of a South Luangwa safari)

Luangwa Valley

North Luangwa NP

North Luangwa National Park is far more remote, and visitors here are unlikely to encounter another tourist group in the entire 4,636 km 2 (46,000 hectares). The road network is relatively sparse, and the camps are rustic and fully immersive, designed to be dismantled during the rainy season.

This park is not suitable for solo exploration, and permission to enter must be secured from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Services ahead of time. Though elephant and leopard sightings are not as common as in SLNP, there are large prides of lions accustomed to people on foot .

Forty years ago, Zambia had one of the largest black rhino populations in Africa, with around a third of them found in the Luangwa Valley. In 1998, they were declared extinct in Zambia due to rampant poaching. With increasing efforts to secure SLNP and NLNP in particular, the North Luangwa Conservation Programme has released 25 black rhinos into the park since 2003, effectively re-establishing a viable population.

The woodlands of the escarpment offer the best chance of spotting both sable and roan antelope, as well as unique birding opportunities. Over 400 different species of birds have been recorded in both SLNP and NLNP.

luangwa valley safari

Luambe National Park

Situated between NLNP and SLNP, Luambe NP lies on the eastern side of the Luangwa River and, at less than 300km 2 (30,000 hectares), is one of Zambia’s smallest national parks. After decades of neglect and a shortage of resources, a 2014 report found that the park held just 5% of its wildlife potential. Fortunately, things have turned around in recent years. The Luambe Conservation Project was created to restore the park to its former glory as one of the most biodiverse parks in Zambia.

As a result, the wildlife is gradually recovering, and visitors have the entire park to themselves. There is only one camp currently offering accommodation in Luambe, consisting of five comfortable safari tents. Not only are tourists treated to Zambian-style rustic luxury, but they can also witness the restoration in action. From monitoring camera traps and tracking African painted wolves to tagging vultures and recording nesting patterns of the carmine bee-eaters, guests are welcomed as an essential part of the conservation recovery process.

Luangwa Valley

Lukusuzi National Park

Lukusuzi NP is the fourth and final national park considered to be part of the Luangwa Valley. Situated to the southeast of Luambe, the park is devoid of infrastructure, facilities, or accommodation. A single dirt track traverses the park, but even this is only traversable in a 4X4 vehicle during the dry season. Little is known about the state of the park’s wildlife populations.

Luangwa Valley

The when, why and how

Luangwa Valley is best experienced during the dry season, especially for novice safari-goers. From around May until October, all camps are fully operational, and wildlife sightings are best as animals congregate around the remaining water. From November onwards, the rains arrive and turn the valley’s black cotton soils into a sticky sludge that not even the most experienced drivers will be able to navigate. Only a handful of South Luangwa’s lodges remain open during the wet season. Most bush camps are packed away, only to be resurrected in a flurry of activity at the start of the following dry season. Those lodges that do remain open during the green season, when birding is spectacular, take advantage of the water by offering river trips and boat cruises.

Accommodation options range from budget camps (only in or bordering SLNP) to more luxurious and exclusive lodges and private villas. However, true to form for Luangwa Valley, even the most expensive lodges share the authentic, down-to-earth tone that epitomises the Zambian safari experience. It is an approach that recognises that the real grandeur lies in the scenery, the wildlife, and the stories. Why waste time fussing with canapes when you can watch the sunset with your feet soaking in the cool waters of the river, swapping tales of the day’s sightings?

From The Guest Book

Mwaleshi’s walking safaris offer a truly unique and magical safari experience. The camp is just the right side of rustic – authentic and comfortable bush living in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Mwaleshi river.  An afternoon dip in the river with a glass of wine is an absolute must!

The guides and camp staff are exceptional – some of the most friendly and knowledgeable we’ve met anywhere on our travels. It’s obvious how much they truly care about their guests. Chef James turns out delicious lunches and dinners (fresh salads, grilled meats, chicken satays), exactly the kind of thing you fancy after several hours of bush walks. We moved on to another camp afterwards and wished we could have had Chef James with us!

If you’re up for an adventure on foot and interested in experiencing a totally different kind of safari, we highly recommend Mwaleshi. You’ll get closer to the animals than you think — and that’s a pretty incredible feeling!

(Mwaleshi feedback from Expert Africa )

“Nothing ever seemed too much trouble and we truly felt very welcome. The guiding, the cuisine and the accommodation could not have been better. We loved every minute of it and so enjoyed meeting you and getting to know you.”

“Dear John and Carol and the rest of the team,

We had the wonderful option to be able to stay with you for a few days on our first trip to Zambia, and on arrival we were made feel very welcome. The whole experience was just out of this world. Your staff were wonderful and all the activities that we participated in were very well organised and we enjoyed them thoroughly. It was wonderful way to be introduced to Zambia. We found it very hard to leave.”

Exactly what we requested – we asked for remote and we got it. On game drives there were no other vehicles other than Tafika vehicles in that part of the National Park. For those spending more time there than we did, there were lots of activities available, microlight flight, walks, bicycle safari as well as game drives.

Food excellent – we really appreciated the home grown vegetables at every meal.

The Coppinger family were always around, making you feel very welcome and it gave it more of a feel of staying in their home and not an impersonal hotel. The staff were always welcoming, drive guides extremely knowledgeable and always ready to pass on information and to personalise it with their own experiences.

(Tafika feedback from Expert Africa )

“Dear John, Carol, Heather, Bryan and Team- especially Amon and Mcooper for superb guiding (and bad jokes) Just to say how much we enjoyed our few days at Tafika. The setting is stunning, the level of guiding must be the best in Africa, and the ethics of Remote Africa’s attitude to responsible tourism is to be highly commended.”

After a great morning walk we were welcomed by Alex and his team.

Overlooking the confluence of the Luangwa and the Mwaleshi river, Takwela enjoys an unrivaled position in North Luangwa. The infrastructure is authentic but first class quality.

Lunch was excellent as were the table companions.

congratulations to Alex & co !

A delightful place to stay with a lovely view of a small riverbed from the upstairs bedroom and the animals that wandered down to it, including baboons and a large group of giraffe. You would never know unless they told you that everything is set up at the start of the season and pulled down at the end, it is all very solid with wooden furniture that has to be carried in and out.

We had an excellent guide in Moffit for whom nothing was too much trouble and Amon was superb scout who shared his tracking skills on our search for lion.

The kitchen visit is not to be missed and the food was excellent; the vegetables come across from the main camp. We were left to imagine how the fridge is carried in and out every season – no easy task!

Smaller animals were also worth seeing – elephant shew and a delightful small Scops owl which visited every evening while we were having dinner.

Kirsten moved to Zambia first and started the lodge that opened in 2006, while Peter followed a couple of years later. They both call South Luangwa their home.

Testimonials

Before we visited Nkonzi I was very nervous of sleeping in a tent with wild animals roaming freely outside at night. But once we arrived  I was completely put at ease by the camp staff...

It may only have been 3 days but it was packed with fun and rich rides! Gavin, thank you for the extra miles you have gone to accommodate us and make our trip extremely memorable.

For me, the highlight was the one-day expedition drive in the Park, just us and the animals, no obvious impact from humans. We also had excellent sightings of leopard and the night time dinners at the camp

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, sample trip, wild luangwa valley, “8 night safari with frank steenhuisen to experience the wild luangwa”, safari rating.

A safari focussed on exploring the undiscovered secrets of the Luangwa Valley along with private guide Frank Steenhuisen. Combining both the wildlife rich South Luangwa National Park & the wild and remote Luambe National Park.

Itinerary in Brief

4 Nights Kafunta River Lodge

4 Nights Kazikizi Camp

leopard mother cub luangwa zambia photo safari

Zambia is an undiscovered gem in Southern Africa that is rich in both wildlife and natural beauty. It is the place to go for a traditional and authentic African safari with a personal and rustic touch. Zambia is a country full of colour and life, and South Luangwa is the most iconic and famous wildlife hotspot found within the country.

The Luangwa Valley boasts not only an impressive diversity of life, but also large concentrations of some of the more iconic animal species, which Africa is so very famous for. With the Luangwa River snaking its way through the centre of the valley, it becomes one of the last water sources for all wildlife living in the area, making it ideal for game viewing. We should expect to see many herds of elephants frequenting the river, huge concentrations of hippos (the highest density of any park in the world!) as well as the many big cats which hunt along the banks of the river. The Luangwa Valley is also known as the VALLEY OF THE LEOPARD and is one of the best areas in the world to find and view these magnificent cats in the wild!

This WILD LUANGWA SAFARI is aimed at those whom have heard or seen some of the beauties that the Luangwa has to offer and would like to not only visit the area, but really experience it in all its different forms. Frank’s goal for this trip is take you on a journey to two different National Parks along the river, explaining in detail the complexities and intricate relationships of all that is natural, while still exposing you to the incredibly warm and welcoming locals who work in the carefully selected camps you will visit. The trip will see you comfortably accommodated, well fed and well looked after. However, the core of this safari is centred around the wildlife and wilderness the valley has to offer. We start off in the busier Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa National Park for a strong dose of wildlife, but soon after – we venture far north into the more remote Luambe National Park where we don’t expect to find many other tourists but rather a more authentic and real wilderness experience.

Detailed Itinerary

1st,2nd,3rd & 4th nights: kafunta river lodge.

Kafunta River Lodge is a classic Zambian safari lodge and combines all the essentials for a great safari. Here you will find the rest and peace you need after an exciting day on safari, in combination with personalised service and a warm welcome by the team.

Each of the luxury private chalets and the main lounge & dining area overlook the game rich flood plain. Beyond the plain is the Luangwa River and one of the best game viewing areas of the magical South Luangwa National Park. Kafunta River Lodge is situated on the edge of the Park making for easy access and is open from April to early January.

The eight private safari chalets have been built on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs. They are tastefully decorated with African style and charm. All were refurbished in 2014 to a high standard. Additionally, there are two luxury suites which feature a private deck, an upstairs viewing veranda and a luxurious bathroom.

5th, 6th 7th, 8th Nights: Kazikizi Camp

The camp is located on the edge of a lagoon overlooking the Luangwa river. The area is a magnet for herbivores that feed on the short grass and thus is also the hunting grounds for the predators that call this secluded section home. This is the most productive wildlife section in Luambe National Park although the focus will be on enjoying the true wilderness experience and remoteness of this fantastic park.

Accommodation at Kazikizi Camp is in en-suite rustic chalets all of which enjoy a spectacular location beneath the trees on the banks of the lagoon. The camp has only 3 rooms, so it is very intimate and small. Dinners and other meals are often enjoyed out in the open under the stars which is absolutely magic!

Varied wildlife activities are on offer, including waking up early morning and walking straight out of camp for a walking safari along the river, just an awesome experience! Delicious, home-cooked food is served under a large African Ebony tree, or on the moonlit riverbank, and there’s a delightful campfire to retire to after dinner.

SAFARI IN ZAMBIA'S FAMED LUANGWA VALLEY

Situated far from all the major cities, the Luangwa Valley has been spared from masses of tourists, leaving it unspoilt and undiscovered.

This area consists of 9,000 sq Km of lush riverine vegetation, with arguably the most diverse range of wildlife in Africa, and fantastic for bird watchers. Walking safaris were pioneered in the Luangwa Valley. The Luangwa Valley is the southern extension of the Great Rift Valley that stretches from North Africa down to the Zambezi River.

The South Luangwa National Park is the Luangwa Valley’s most accessible and popular Park. The country side in the South Luangwa National Park is spectacular in its rugged beauty, and the conditions are idea for the thriving wildlife as well as bird species for which there are over 400 different types. This is also one of the best places in the world to see leopard. The Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest are also two animals that are unique to this region and are found nowhere else in the world.

luangwa valley safari

The North Luangwa National Park is a secluded bush paradise. It shares the same wildlife and vegetation as the South Luangwa National Park, however, it is renowned for its great buffalo herds and huge lion prides. Few places in Africa can compete with the North Luangwa National Park when it comes to exclusivity and remoteness.

Most of Zambia’s best safari camps are found in the eastern section of the South Luangwa National Park. Permanent Safari Lodges are the main basis for Safari activities, however, there are numerous seasonal bush camps situated in remote areas that offer an unrivalled safari experience, although it is strongly recommended that only experienced safari goers consider these camps as they are not for the faint hearted.

In the dry season, hundreds of hippo gather below camp and the resident leopard are almost nightly visitors to the camp. The 4 en-suite tents overlooking the river are spacious with a focus on allowing guests the chance to feel like they have escaped to a lost world.

In summary, Luambe Camp offers:

*This experience is only available to those who choose to stay the full 4 nights*

This experience is aimed for the adventurous and for the explorers who want to totally immerse themselves in this pristine and remote wilderness area. Our first guests who experienced the sleep-out fell asleep to the call of a leopard followed by the distant roar of lions.

Our Luambe  sleepouts are generally run on your second or third night in the park where instead of heading back to camp after your afternoon game drive, you will be taken to a your secret sleep out site where you will spend the night. A bush dinner will be served at the sleep out site and ablutions will be within walking distance to your net. Your guide and scout will always be nearby, ensuring you get a peaceful nights sleep under the starry Zambian sky.

What safari activities are available at Luambe?

Visiting hides and enjoying a walking safari are our preferred ways to spend the mornings in Luambe. These activities are particular enjoyable when the air is still cool, the bush is awakening after the long night and the light is soft. We sometimes conclude our walking safari with a surprise bush breakfast in a shady spot too. The late afternoon is a great time for game drives . Your evening game drive will always include a special spot to stop, stretch the legs and with a sundowner in hand, watch the pinky sunsets over the park. We then drive back in the dark with the spotlights looking for nocturnal wildlife before returning to camp for dinner.

What is so special about Luambe National Park and how easy is it to get there ?

Luambe National Park i s located on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River, halfway between  South  and  North Luangwa National Park. It is one of the oldest protected areas in Zambia and was first given national park status in 1938. Nevertheless, because of its remote location on the eastern bank of the Luangwa river, the Park has remained essentially unchanged – largely because it’s off the beaten track, a secluded, tranquil place not covered by the usual tourist routes.

The easiest way to get to Luambe would be to fly Mfuwe Airport via Lusaka.

A member of the Luambe Camp team will then meet you at the airport and transfer you into camp. The airlines currently  flying into Zambia are: Emirates  via Dubai,  Ethiopian Airlines ,  Airlink ,  Kenya Airways  and  Air Tanzania .

You’re just 3 steps away from visiting the Luangwa

You may be wondering what the process is from the moment you enquire to when you start traveling?

Send us an enquiry with your preferred dates and number of travellers .

Is Luambe the only place you intend on visiting? Maybe a multi-camp package would be a bette option.

Do you need assitance with flights, be sure to let us know.

Once your dates are confirmed , we will send through a provisional booking summary with details of when your deposit and balance of payment is due.

A month prior to travel, we will request personal details from your such as flight arrival / departure times and. dietary requests.

We will collect your from Mfuwe Airport (or wherever you are coming from) and transfer you into camp for the duration of your stay. Will will then transfer you back on the day of your departure.

Guest Review

Fabulous Flatdogs- a gateway to the wondrous Luangwa We came back to Flatdogs after 10 years and spent 2 wonderful nights there. It was and is one of our favourite places to visit and we had an amazing experience. We stayed in chalet 2b which was huge with its own kitchenette although we didn’t use it as there is an all day restaurant available with a long menu list and daily specials all freshly made, beautifully presented and delicious. The pool area is lovely with views over the river. Jess, Ade & Harold were fantastic hosts as were all the staff who were excellent and it felt like home away from home. Our guide was Yotam and he was brilliant as we saw lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes and wild dogs amongst others as well as a lion eating a kill and the interaction between him and the lionesses, being stuck in an elephant traffic jam, and watching hyenas firstly steal a leopards kill and secondly eat a buffalo that was stuck in the mud. The Luangwa is a stunning place to visit. Harold also kindly took us the Project Luangwa sponsored school (Flatdogs is a donor) and it was heartwarming to meet the boys that we sponsor and the coordinator Mable and to hear the effort and the drive behind the project to provide sustainability to the area. Flatdogs was a wonderful trip and we hope we can fulfil our vow to be back every year! Crescentmoon November 2021, Tripadvisor

  • Luangwa Valley

One of Africa’s most successful conservation initiatives, the Luangwa Valley is a prime wildlife sanctuary.

One of the major tributaries of the great Zambezi River.

No trip to Zambia is complete without a visit to the Luangwa Valley. One of Africa’s most successful conservation initiatives, the Luangwa Valley is a prime wildlife sanctuary, with incredible concentrations and varieties of game and birdlife that have made it world famous. This is the landscape of the ‘Real Africa’, with herds of antelope roaming the plains and countless predators ensuring dramatic game viewing at its finest.

luangwa valley safari

One of the four largest rivers in Zambia

The Luangwa River which flows through the valley is one of the major tributaries of the great Zambezi River, and one of the four largest rivers in Zambia.

Wildlife conservation in this area dates back to the late 19th Century when the British South Africa Company, established by Cecil John Rhodes, was in charge of the administration of this land and put a ban on hunting of hippos, buffalos and many other species which today are bountiful in the valley. The region is home to 60 mammals including elephant, lion, wild dog, buffalo, hippo and antelope, as well as over 400 bird species and as a result is a spectacular African safari destination.

20 Safari Camps In South Luangwa National Park

- This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure.

There are many national parks in Zambia, but the South Luangwa National Park is one of the most stunning. From the landscape to the wildlife, a safari in the South Luangwa is an unforgettable experience. The South Luangwa National Park is more popular than its counterpart the North Luangwa National Park because it is more accessible. You can reach this national park by road (from Lusaka via Chipata) or by air to Mfuwe Airport.

South Luangwa National Park is an incredible place to safari because of the abundance of wildlife. The Luangwa River and its lagoons attract incredible wildlife including four of the ‘Safari Big Five’: elephants, leopards, buffalo and lions. You can also be in with a chance of seeing wild dogs. Like any safari at any destination, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed but if you go at peak time (between July and October) chances are you won’t be disappointed. The South Luangwa National Park is a wonderful destination but the safari camp you choose really does make a difference to your stay. For accommodation for all budgets check out these 20 best safari camps in the South Luangwa National Park.

1- Mufwe Lodge

2- kafunta river lodge, 3- three rivers camp, 4- kapamba bushcamp, 5- time + tide chinzombo, 6- chikunto safari lodge, 7- bilimungwe bush camp, 8- nkwali camp, 9- puku ridge camp, 10- sungani lodge, 11- kakuli camp, 12- tafika camp, 13- shawa luangwa camp, 14- flatdogs camp, 15- luangwa river camp, 16- robin’s house, 17- marula lodge, 18- croc valley lodge, 19- thornicroft, 20- lupande lodge, 20 best safari camps in south luangwa national park, luxury $$$$.

Mufwe Lodge’s iconic advertisement photo is of an elephant walking through the lobby of the lodge.

In fact, these huge families of elephant’s meander through the lodge in late October and mid-December to eat mangos from the large tree on the grounds of the property.

Mufwe Lodge offers stylish comfort with a strong connection to nature.

It’s even been voted the ‘Best Lodge in Zambia’ on several occasions.

One of the best things about this lodge is that it’s located just within the national park.

Right in front of the lodge there are two lagoons.

These lagoons are home to a plethora of hippos.

There are 18 thatched chalets perched on wooden decks.

Right from your room you will be able to see elephants, hippo and maybe more if you are lucky.

Mfuwe Lodge provides game drive, walking safaris, community visits, spa treatments, sundowner rides into the bush and they also specialise in photographic safaris led by a professional.

Kafunta River Lodge is a stunning safari camp that faces the Luangwa River, fractionally outside the bounds of the national park.

When you first enter this luxurious safari lodge you will be instantly drawn to the deck area that overlooks the floodplains and the Luangwa River.

There is a large circle communal seating area with a fire pit with incredible views.

There’s no ruffing it here, guests will surely safari with style.

There are lounge chairs, a swimming pool, the Fig Tree Spa, a skilled chef and even a wildlife hideout to take pictures of animals without them spotting you.

They offer all the classic Zambian safari experiences including photography safaris.

They also have packages that include safaris in the South Luangwa at Kafunta River Lodge and trips to Lake Malawi beach across the border.

If you are looking to safari with sophistication look no further than Kafunta.

The stunning Three Rivers Camp is set at the confluence of the Lusangazi, Kapamba and Luangwa Rivers.

It’s a wonderful natural setting for a safari lodge.

You don’t technically even have to go out on a game drive to see wildlife as the camp faces a lagoon that’s full of life.

This tented campground sits under sausage trees which provide the perfect amount of shade from the hot summer sun.

One of the special things about the accommodation at this camp is that they offer star beds.

Each private accommodation has a semi sheltered bed where you can relax in the day or watch the stars and hear leopards growling in the night.

A typical day at Three Rivers includes a 5:30 wake up call, morning tea, morning safari, a buffet brunch, afternoon tea, a night safari and a four-course dinner.

south luangwa lions

As the name suggests this bushcamp is situated on the Kapamba River.

Zambia experiences a rainy season between mid-November and April.

Kapamba is one of only two bush camps in the area that is open between April and January.

While it’s not the optimal time for wildlife viewing because of the dense vegetation it is still an interesting time to visit.

This bushcamp has four spacious thatched chalets raised on decks.

The central living and dining area sits under matumi and sausage trees and there’s a wonderful deck and swimming pool.

It’s the perfect cosy, modern yet rustic setting for a safari holiday.

They offer game drives, night drives, walking safaris, sundowners, spa treatments and specialised photography safaris.

Another excellent safari camp in South Luangwa is Chinzombo by Time + Tide.

Set on the banks of a meander on the Luangwa River, Chinzombo epitomises safari luxury.

Chinzombo is named after a local tree that surrounds the camp.

The property takes all its inspiration from nature from the materials used to build the lodge to the services provided.

There are six spacious safari tents each with its own private pool, soaking tub, and of course panoramic views of the river.

When eating dinner on the lodge’s private deck just know that they will have grown most of the produce themselves.

They offer day and night game drives, walking safaris, in-room spa treatments, sleepouts under the stars, boat safaris, local culture tours, and activities just for the kids.

Chikunto Safari Lodge

Located inside the South Luangwa National Park, Chikunto Safari Lodge looks out over a large meander in the Luangwa River.

The whole area is surrounded by rolling plains and plateaus.

Chikunto prides itself on being an eco-friendly camp.

They have five luxury tented suites that make you feel like you are immersed in nature.

The whole lodge is built on raised stilts to allow nature and wildlife to be as undisturbed as possible.

Take a dip in the pool during the day, sit by the campfire at night, enjoy freshly brewed coffee in the morning and of course head out on an awesome safari.

This lodge offers day and night safaris, walking safaris, and boat safaris.

Another safari camp from The Bushcamp Company is Bilimungwe.

Bilimungwe is an ideal destination if you are searching for an intimate safari experience as there are only four reed and thatched rooms available.

The accommodation at Bilimungwe is perfectly perched on a deck overlooking a watering hole.

And what do you get from a watering hole in South Luangwa?

Lots of animals! From herds of elephants to an array of birds and smaller animals like tortoises, there’s always something going on.

The lounge area of the camp is built around a termite’s mound under the shade of a large winterthorn tree.

Enjoy breakfast with views of the Luangwa River and an evening spent around the fire pit listening to bush coming alive at night.

They offer day and night game drives, walking safaris, private guides, and specially adapted photographic safaris at Bilimungwe.

Part of Robin Pope Safaris, Nkwali Camp offers simple elegance and comfort for the duration of your safari holiday.

There are six spacious chalets, all of which can be fully opened at the front to reveal awe-inspiring views of the river.

An added room bonus are the outdoor showers.

There’s nothing better than cooling off with a shower under the trees, listening to the sound of monkeys playing in the trees.

Due to its location on the eastern side of the Luangwa River, game drives start with a boat trip across the river.

They offer all the usual safaris as well as a range of boat excursions during emerald season (from December to April) when the South Luangwa turns into a green jungle.

south luangwa safari vehicle next to elephants

Puku Ridge is a small and intimate camp that provides eight semi-tented suites all with wrap-around views, private plunge pools, bathtubs with a view, outside showers, and a private deck.

The camp’s main area has an open-air lounge and campfire where guests like to sit out at lunchtime or in the evening.

For activities take a game drive in one of their 4×4 luxury vehicles.

A day at Puku Ridge usually starts early with a four-hour game drive and then back out again in the late afternoon.

Afternoon safaris are nearly always rounded off with sundowners including a cocktail of your choice and snacks before returning to the camp.

In need of more animal sightings then head back out for an evening safari.

Puku Ridge also has a wonderful photographic hide.

This is a wonderful place to photograph the resident herd of elephants.

This family-owned and operated safari lodge is located on the southern banks of the Luangwa River.

This lodge prides themselves on their close-knit community, with almost everything you see in the lodge being created by the family or local people.

The camp is stylish and elegant, yet it still retains its safari ruggedness.

They might call the seven rooms “tents” but the presence of canvas doesn’t mean luxury disappears.

Private decks and plunge pools help give that lavish feel.

In the main part of the lodge there is an indoor and outdoor seating area and lounge.

If you are one of those that likes to stick to a routine on holiday, there’s a well-equipped and air-conditioned gym just a short walk from the main deck.

Photographers may also strongly consider booking a stay at Sungani as there’s a dedicated photography studio with 27” Apple desktops with Adobe.

Whether you are watching animals from the safari van, the boat, on foot or in the hideout, Sungani Lodge provides a professional and informative safari experience throughout.

Mid-scale $$$

south luangwa buffalo

Kakuli Camp is brought to you by Time + Tide who have camps across Zambia.

Kakuli means ‘old buffalo bull’, this was the nickname given to Norman Carr who pioneered the walking safari.

Their bright and airy safari rooms embrace the outdoors and make the most of the panoramic views that surround the lodge.

Fancy an outdoor shower in nature? Well, your room will have an inside and outside shower.

Their elevated main lounge area looks out over the river and the year-round lagoon.

It’s the perfect place for guests to congregate and chat about their sightings of the day.

The camp also has a resident lion pride, a seasonal colony of vibrant carmine bee-eaters and an unparalleled leopard sighting record.

As well as the common safaris they also offer wildlife hides and special sleepouts that are run by Time + Tide across their camps.

south luangwa national park bird

The Luangwa River separates Zambia’s Muchinga Province from Eastern Province.

Tafika Camp is on the banks of the river on the Eastern Province side.

Tafika’s location is such that it allows guests access to three diverse habitats: the Luangwa River, the salt pans and Mutanda plains.

The salt pans are wonderful for spotting crowned cranes (Uganda’s national bird) from August onwards.

Safaris in this area are game rich on both sides of the river.

Tafika Camp offers four people vehicles for their safaris for a more enriched wildlife viewing experience.

As well as the traditional South Luangwa safaris there is also a hideout at the camp for excellent wildlife photography.

They also offer cultural visits to Mkasanga village where you can meet and get to know the warm and friendly Zambian locals.

Something that people love at Tafika Camp is the food, especially the chef’s homemade coal baked bread and the fresh vegetables from the garden.

Green Safaris operate several lodges in the South Luangwa as well as the Lower Zambezi.

With their green ethos at the heart of every visit one of the unique things about this camp is their silent safari vehicle’s.

Though safari guides and drives are skilled at working in harmony with animals, safari vans are noisy compared to the silence of the bush.

Shawa’s fleet of vehicle’s are all electric!

Shawa also provide walking safaris carried out by expert guides who will provide you with information on just about anything you see or think of.

When you are back at the camp head straight into the camp plunge pool to cool down.

The accommodation at Shawa includes couples’ tents and family tents.

Their tents are incredible.

You really feel like you are sleeping outside with the tent’s sides opening to allow you to walk onto your private deck.

For an unforgettable safari that is affordable and sustainable head to Flatdogs Camp.

Flatdogs doesn’t just claim to be sustainable, it is the first lodge or camp to be awarded the Fair Trade Tourism certificate in Zambia.

There are a variety of accommodation options at the camp.

There are family friendly chalet rooms, traditional safari tents, the private crocodile nest, and an incredible treehouse.

Their treehouse is open air overlooking the watering hole and it’s ideal for honeymooners.

They offer morning, afternoon, and night drives as well as walking safaris.

You will be amazed by the skill of your guide, who doesn’t need a radio to find animals, just their tracking knowledge.

south luangwa deer

Nestled under an ebony grove next to the Luangwa River, the Luangwa River Camp is in an area rich with wildlife.

The Luangwa River Camp has five bush suites that have adorable, thatched roofs.

The rooms are complete with ensuites, some with sunken bathtubs. All chalets look out towards the river.

The camp offers game drives, walking safaris and seasonal boat tours.

Emerald season is the time to appreciate nature from the water.

They also offer some excellent discounts for the Emerald season that you should consider, especially if you have been on a traditional safari before and want to experience something different.

Another facet of Robin Pope Safaris is Robin’s House.

Located next to the Luangwa River, this is a private house with two large ensuite bedrooms.

It’s an ideal secluded safari retreat for family or a group of friends.

Owing to the nature of a safari experience many safari camps do not allow children under the age of 12 but children of all ages are welcome at Robin’s House.

This private house has a plunge pool, a private chef and offers all the experiences that Nkwali Camp provides.

a bloat of hippos lying on the sand in south luangwa

If you are searching for a budget friendly safari lodge, then consider Marula Lodge.

This is a camp that caters for a variety of budgets and comfort styles.

For backpackers there’s a mixed dormitory that sleeps nine people.

There are also chalets that come in luxury, standard and family sizes.

Then one of the most affordable but private options is a riverfront tent.

There are six tents that arguably have the best view right in front of the river.

You can literally see hippos from your bed!

These tents are basic, it’s a tent-like structure sitting on concrete but inside there is a bed and bedside table.

The bathroom is open-air around 10 metres away behind the tent.

At night time you will need to shout for a guard to escort you in case there’s a resident hippo going for a stroll.

Taking a walking safari with the guides from Marula Lodge is a highlight of anyone’s trip.

They are knowledgeable, fun, and enthusiastic.

Their guides in the vans are also skilled at spotting and tracking animals.

Take a safari with Marula Lodge and it’s likely that you will be able to spot the intriguing wild dogs (of which there are only an estimated 6,600 left in the world).

Situated next to Marula Lodge, Croc Valley Lodge isn’t as scary as it sounds!

Croc Valley prides themselves on their affordable safaris, an experience that has for so long been for the more affluent.

Whether you are a backpacker, camper, overlander, family, individual or group there’s an accommodation and game drive option for you at Croc Valley.

They have riverfront tents that come with a full board option.

There are also chalets with a self-catered kitchen.

Then there are the turtle rooms which sleep 2, 3 and 4 people and are bunk bed style.

Finally, there are the eco tents which are basic but super affordable and you can also bring your own tent and camping equipment.

They offer game drives, walking safaris, village tours, and even tribal textile and art safaris (kids love this).

They also provide a free taxi service to visit Mulberry Mongoose which is a handcrafted jewellery company located next to a well-trodden elephant walkway.

Thornicroft Lodge

In the same area as Marula and Croc Valley there is Thornicroft Lodge.

Thornicroft offers a plethora of safari activities for the whole family.

There are game drives (morning, afternoon, and night), day safaris to Nsefu Sector (one of the richest parts of the South Luangwa), guided walks to the village, birding safaris, walking safaris, and bicycle tours.

At the lodge there’s lots to do.

There’s a swimming pool, table tennis table, pool table, a kids play area and a foot trail to the local lagoon.

If you are traveling with younger children Thornicroft is a great place to consider as it is suited to kids and even has a Kids Cadet Program.

There are river view chalets, bush style chalets and tented chalets.

Directly behind Thornicroft Lodge set back from the river is Lupande Lodge.

The lodge might not overlook the river, but it does have its own little watering hole.

If you are looking for excellent service and unmatched prices, then Lupande Lodge is the place to be.

This lodge doesn’t have a large social media and internet presence but like many things in Zambia it’s recommended through word of mouth.

Locals and Zambian residents find this to be a great place to enjoy a safari that won’t break the bank.

They offer game drives and walking safaris and their guides really know where to find the animals, with a particular proclivity for lions.

Absolute Zambia Safaris

Ultimate South Luangwa & Victoria Falls Safari, Zambia

Fly to Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, before taking a picturesque flight to South Luangwa National Park. This wildlife sanctuary, dubbed one of the world’s best, is home to more than 60 mammal species and 400 bird species. Take a walking safari into the bush to get closer to the wildlife, or look for the Park’s iconic leopards. Travel to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls after your safari. There are various viewing spots, but those seeking an adrenaline rush might try swimming in the Devil’s Pool, which is located right on the edge of the 100-meter-high falls.

South Luangwa National Park

With its lush vegetation, the South Luangwa National Park and the Luangwa River attract a large number of animals. Elephant and buffalo herds abound, as do major antelope species such as impala and puku. Common waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, kudu, grysbok, oribi, reedbuck, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, sable, and roan are among the other antelope species. The area’s leopard watching is superb, with species like Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest found nowhere else on the planet.

Lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs are the principal predators in South Luangwa Park. The Luangwa River’s dry season, when all game is compelled to congregate along its banks, is an unforgettable experience. The local lion prides are fed by large hippo populations, while yellow baboons and Defassa waterbuck give contrast to their southern cousins, and even the endangered wild dog thrives.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will leave an unforgettable impression on you. April or May are the best months to visit if you want to see the falls at their most spectacular. The water levels are at their highest point of the year in April, but the geological formations of the falls are at their most pure in the dry season (particularly October and November). The wildlife is also great, and there are numerous safari possibilities in the area, especially between May and October.

5 Best Safari Tours In Zambia, Africa

Z ambia has been my home for over 30 years and one of the things I love most about the country is its amazing safari destinations. With its pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and exceptional conservation efforts, Zambia has emerged as one of Africa’s best safari spots. Whether you’re looking for the Big Five or just seeking the unspoiled African wilderness, Zambia has it all.

Let’s head on an adventure together, through the heart of Africa, and explore five of the country’s top safari destinations. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty of Zambia.

1. Lower Zambezi National Park

Game drives, fishing, and canoeing .

The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Africa’s greatest wildernesses featuring 2,542 square miles of unspoilt nature. With no paved roads, it’s rare to encounter another safari vehicle, and night time here is all about sitting out by the fire, under a sky full of stars.

The Zambezi, Africa’s fourth longest river, forms the boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park.  The area is an incredible wildlife sanctuary — herds of elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and over 400 different bird species. Most of the wildlife is concentrated along the river, so a great way to experience the park is to board a boat, or drift silently past the riverbank in a canoe. You’ll see plenty of hippos peeking curiously above the water’s surface. Look out for the magnificent carmine bee-eaters who nest in the riverbanks from September to November. The river is also home to the coveted tiger fish — highly prized by serious sport fishermen.

Where To Stay: Sausage Tree Camp is the epitome of bush chic, set in a stunning location along the Zambezi River right in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable; the rooms are well designed, opening onto private plunge pools that overlook the river; and the cocktails are so good you may never want to leave!

2. South Luangwa National Park

Game drives.

The 3,500-square-mile South Luangwa National Park is renowned as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations, with 60 animal species and over 450 different species of bird. Often referred to as “The Valley of Leopards,” the main predators here are leopard, lion, spotted hyena, and wild dog — with the leopard population among the densest in the world. Expect to see large herds of elephants, sometimes up to 70 strong. South Luangwa is also home to the endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest, and the near-endemic Crawshay’s zebra.

The best way to see South Luangwa’s wildlife is on a morning or afternoon game drive from your lodge. Expect early wake-ups as most morning drives set off at around 6 a.m. You’ll return to camp for a middle-of-the-day siesta and then head out again in the afternoon; the animals are more active at these cooler times of day.

Where To Stay: Shawa Luangwa is a small, eco-friendly bush camp overlooking the Luangwa River in one of the park’s most untouched areas with excellent year-round game viewing.

3. North Luangwa National Park

Walking safaris.

The remote, 2,880-square-mile North Luangwa National Park is synonymous with walking safaris. The beauty of this park is the opportunity to experience Africa as it once was — wild and untouched. No game drives are permitted in a majority of the park and access is primarily for walking safaris. You’ll leave the four-by-four game-drive vehicle at camp and set out on foot with your guide and an armed park ranger. You’ll walk among elephants, antelope, zebras, and even the occasional predator, always maintaining a safe distance from the magnificent wildlife. In addition to strong populations of buffalo and elephants, there’s a number of black rhinos, making it the only Big Five park in Zambia.

Where To Stay: Remote Africa Safaris operate two camps that specialize in guided walking safaris. For the more adventurous, the Samala and Ituba Community Camps offer self-catering, and for the intrepid, there’s the Amatololo Experience , a self-drive camping route.

4. Kasanka National Park

Bats and beyond.

Kasanka National Park is one of Zambia’s smallest national parks. But it’s one of the country’s hidden treasures and has an incredible 480 bird species and 114 mammals; there is a lot for you to see.

Kasanka is best known as home to the annual migration of straw-colored fruit bats — the largest bat migration in the world and, in fact, the world’s largest mammal migration. From October to December each year, about 10 million bats descend on a tiny patch of forest in the park. They migrate from thousands of miles away, some from as far away as West Africa. The migration is one of the natural world’s best-kept secrets; even scientists don’t know exactly where the bats come from or where they go when they leave the park.

Beyond the bats, Kasanka gives you excellent opportunities to find and photograph one of Africa’s rarer antelopes, the shy, secretive, and semi-aquatic sitatunga. The park is home to more than 500 of them, making it Africa’s densest and most visible population of sitatunga! The elusive blue monkey and the little-known Kinda baboon also call Kasanka home. It’s unlikely you’ll encounter either of these species anywhere else in southern Africa.

Where To Stay: Kasanka has two basic lodges — Wasa and Luombwa — and a seasonal self-catering tented camp.

5. Liuwa Plain National Park

Wildebeest migration.

The 2,274-square-mile Liuwa Plains National Park in Zambia was once the traditional hunting ground of the Litunga (King) of the Lozi people. Liuwa Plain is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa but yet it’s hardly known. Each year in November, with the start of the rainy season, massive herds of blue wildebeest, 45,000 strong, migrate to Liuwa Plains, often mingling with zebras along the way. It’s an incredible sight to witness.

Other unusual antelope found here include oribi, red lechwe, steenbok, duiker, tsessebe, and roan. Predators include wild dogs, lions, and hyenas. The bird life is abundant and the dramatic lightning and storms at the start of the rains make for spectacular views and fantastic photography opportunities.

Where To Stay: King Lewanika is the only permanent camp in Liuwa Plain National Park. It has six stylish, open-front safari tents that are the epitome of luxury.

As a safari destination, Zambia is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets — an amazing, game-rich, unspoilt destination. On safari in Zambia, you’ll get a taste of the real Africa: wild and untamed.
