Papagayo beach in Lanzarote is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It’s located on a wild area on the southern tip, where you can find stretches of golden sand and turquoise water. To enjoy the wild beaches of Papagayo, access is via a bumpy track, on foot or by boat. Here’s our guide to planning your visit , with photos, tips and a map.

Why visit Papagayo beach in Lanzarote?

Is papagayo worth a visit.

Absolutely. Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island ‘s main attractions . Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. Only at the last cove, Papagayo beach, can you find a few buildings. See for yourself:

Papagayo area

Papagayo is the name of a specific beach. But it is also used to refer to the whole area east of Playa Blanca. This is the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).

The area covers several beaches:

• Playa de Papagayo
• Playa de Mujeres
• Playa del Pozo

It is also a historic site of the island’s conquest. You can find wells and a cross commemorating the history of the Norman conquerors (Jean de Bettencourt) who built a chapel and castle in the early 15th century.

How to get to Papagayo beaches by car

• There are no paved roads, but you can get there via a track to the Playa Mujeres parking lot or the Papagayo beach parking lot.
• Several km of bumps and holes (and an entry fee of around €3)
• Note that you are not normally allowed on unpaved roads with rental cars , even with four-wheel drive (check your contract). So, if you have a problem on these trails, you’ll have to pay for towing and everything else.
• Despite limited access, large parking lots fill up fast

• A small car is all you need.
• But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
• There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

Our favorite option is the hiking trail.

• Generally easy to walk, just down to a beach and back up the other side, it’s sometimes harder to see (but not much).
• No shade – bring water and sunscreen.

Enjoy a Catamaran outing: Admire Lanzarote from the sea, enjoy a paella in front of the magnificent scenery and swim in front of the volcanoes. But beware, there’s no access to the beach. Papagayo beach

Let’s start with the officially named Papagayo beach. It’s actually the last beach in the area, which is a beautiful cove that seems to close in, creating a protected area (which is great when it’s windy). The great thing is that you can easily walk around to admire it from different angles.

You can also walk on the other side, past the restaurant, for a better view of the sands of Papagayo beach.

And in the distance, you can even see the island of Fuerteventura, as you can see in the photo below.

On the beach

Then you can head down to the beach to enjoy the protection from the wind.

Unlike other beaches, the cliffs are very steep, so there are stairs to get down. The sand is golden and the waters emerald green. You can relax on the sand, take a dip in the bay or play on the rocks.

However, in high season, you may have trouble finding a place for your towel.

Bars and restaurants in Papagayo

There are no facilities on the larger front beaches, but at Papagayo you can find 2 buildings. These are snack bars. The view is very pleasant, but the music in both establishments was too loud for our taste.

It was nice to enjoy a bit of shade and a refreshing drink.

Playa del Pozo, Papagayo’s neighbouring beach

Near Papagayo, Playa del Pozo beach is a large area of golden sand with beautiful rocks to photograph. With steep cliffs at both ends, you can find an area to be protected from the wind and find some shade.

What’s a little different about this beach is that there are small sand dunes at the back. You can see them in the photo below. And in front of you, you can see the white buildings of Playa Blanca and the volcano of Montana Roja.

Playa Mujeres, beach closer to Playa Blanca.

Playa Mujeres is the second most famous beach in the region. It’s a 400 m-long stretch of golden sand with turquoise water. A parking lot has been built right next to the beach. And it’s the closest on foot to Playa Blanca. This is one of our favorite beaches in the resort .

Because it’s long and wide, there’s more space for everyone to enjoy the sand and sun.

Papagayo hike

We think it’s really worth doing the hiking trail. The views along the water are superb, especially with the hills of los Ajaches behind.

Papagayo Lanzarote – Map

Near the last resort of Playa Blanca (the all-inclusive Sandos Papagayo Beach ), the start of the trail is clearly marked by information panels with a simple map of the area:

Below you can see the Sandos Papagayo Beach resort and the start of the promenade on the left.

Difficulty of walking

The trail is mainly gravel and sometimes sandy. We recommend wearing appropriate footwear for better grip. As you can see from the photo below, there are numerous trails in all directions. But you can always see the direction you’re going in, so choose the path that seems most direct.

But most of the time, the Papagayo hiking trail is like that, so quite easy and pleasant.

Historic photos of Michigan Central Station show heyday of old Detroit train depot

After decades of abandonment and decline, Michigan Central Station is nearing its grand reopening .

After six years of construction and renovation that began after Ford Motor Company purchased it in 2018, the old depot will open its doors to the public for tours beginning June 6.

Originally built in 1913, Michigan Central Station was designed by the same architectural firms that worked on New York City’s Grand Central Station. The building had 10 gates for trains, and its 18-story tower held 500 offices. In the station’s heyday in the 1940s, more than 4,000 passengers passed through each day .

Among the original features of the station, the depot's waiting room was modeled after an ancient Roman bathhouse, with marble floors and high-vaulted ceilings. It also featured a restaurant, shoe shining station, lunch counter, barber shop and more.

The famous 'Home Alone' house is for sale: See inside the revamped home listed at $5.25 million

The iconic suburban Chicago house used in " Home Alone " is up for sale and could be yours – if you have at least $5 million to spare.

According to the Zillow listing , the 5-bedroom, 6-bath home located on 671 Lincoln Ave. in Winnetka, Illinois is for sale at $5.25 million. The house's exterior was used as the McCallister's family home in the 1990 Christmas classic "Home Alone," and the 1992 sequel "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister.

The house was built in 1921 and is over 9,100 square feet. It also features two laundry rooms, a gym, a private movie theater room and an indoor sports court.

The house was listed on Zillow May 24, and has already been viewed on the real estate marketplace over 500,000 times. It was previously listed and sold in 2012 for $1.585 million, making the current $5.25 million listing a 231.2% price increase.

Winnetka is located along Lake Michigan, about 20 miles north of Chicago.

The interior of the home today has a minimal and modern black-and-white style, and looks very different from the home in the movie where Kevin McCallister defended himself from burglars, which was decorated in a more classic Christmas style.

Nikki Haley Writes ‘Finish Them’ on Artillery Shell in Israel

Her visit came just days after Israel drew international condemnation for a strike that killed dozens of Gazan civilians in a camp for displaced Palestinians.

Nikki Haley, the former Republican presidential candidate and U.N. ambassador during the Trump administration, wrote “Finish them” on an artillery shell in Israel this week.

Danny Danon, Israel’s former ambassador to the United Nations and a member of the Israeli Parliament, shared a photo on social media on Tuesday showing Ms. Haley signing the shell. Her visit came just days after Israel drew international condemnation for a strike that killed dozens of Gazan civilians in a camp for displaced Palestinians.

“This is what my friend, the former ambassador Nikki Haley, wrote today on a shell during a visit to an artillery post on the northern border,” Mr. Danon wrote, declaring of the Israeli military, “The I.D.F. will win!”

Ms. Haley finished her inscription with a note that “America loves Israel always,” using a heart emoji for “loves.”

She signed the artillery shell not along the Gaza frontier, in the south, but near Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, with which Israel also has a longstanding conflict. She also visited a kibbutz where Israelis were killed on Oct. 7, and her public remarks focused on Gaza.

Her trip included meetings with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, as well as with Yoav Gallant, the country’s defense minister, and Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet.

Ms. Haley’s message on the artillery shell drew denunciations from some commentators, including the author and columnist Wajahat Ali, who said in a video on TikTok : “If you think that Biden and Democrats are terrible on Gaza — I think they’ve been terrible — just know Republicans will be far, far worse, and I give you Nikki Haley.”

In an interview published Tuesday by the Israel Hayom newspaper, which is owned by the Republican donor Miriam Adelson, Ms. Haley said Israel had done nothing wrong in its invasion and bombardment of Gaza since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people. And she said the United States should continue to support it unconditionally.

“Israel, they’re the good guys,” she said. “And you know what I want Israelis to know? You’re doing the right thing. Don’t let anybody make you feel wrong.”

Israel’s military operations have killed more than 36,000 Gazans, including thousands of women and children , according to the Gazan health ministry. Many of the casualties, including those in the tent camp on Sunday , have been caused by bombs provided by the United States. President Biden recently withheld an arms shipment out of concern that it would be used in an offensive on the city of Rafah, where displaced Palestinians are sheltering.

When asked in the Israel Hayom interview about civilians who crossed into Israel during the Oct. 7 attacks, she said: “The rest of the world can’t say, ‘Oh, be nice to the Palestinians,’ when these are some of the people who murdered their brothers and sisters.” She added: “They don’t know who to trust. That’s not Israel’s fault. That’s the Palestinians’ fault now.”

Ms. Haley’s comments are in line with her history of support for Israel and rejection of international criticism of its actions. As U.N. ambassador, she accused the United Nations of “bullying” Israel and led the U.S. withdrawal of funding for an agency that helps Palestinian refugees.

She recently fell back in line behind Mr. Trump after previously refusing to endorse him, and Mr. Trump suggested he might bring her onto his team “in some form.”
