meghalaya tourism itinerary

Mawsmai Caves

Formed out of limestore, Mawsmai Cave is a well lit cave located at a distance of 6 kms from Cherrapunjee. You can walk upto 150 metres inside the cave and the rest of the cave is not open for visitors to enter. Upon entering the cave, you’d be able to spot unique flora and fauna, streams and eventually the cave will get narrow and off the reach. Mawsmai Cave is a very popular place of interest and you should definitely not miss it out. You do not need a guide to enter this cave.

meghalaya tourism itinerary

Arwah Caves

Arwah cave is one of the hidden wonders in Meghalaya. You’d need to take a detour from the main road and cover a muddy path to reach Arwah Caves. There is a beautiful bridge which leads you till the entrance of the cave. Do ask a guide to accompany you to this cave as there are no marked trails, this being a rather offbeat destination. You’d be welcomed by a sharp descent right after you enter the cave, after which your walk will be quite a challenging and adventurous one, followed by crawling through narrow holes and sharp edges. You can expect to spot limestone structures and fossils inside the cave. A visit to Arwah caves would undoubtedly be quite a thrilling one.

After a whole day of exploring Cherrapunjee, get back to your hotel or homestay in Cherrapunjee (refer to the recommendations on accommodation ) and preferably sleep early on this day. The next day would involve a lot of walking and a visit to the most awaited and talked about place of the trip.

Day 4 : Cherrapunjee – Tyrna – Nongriat

  • From the Taxi Stand in Cherrapunjee, book a private cab for Tyrna Village, which would cost you about INR 500.
  • The taxi would drop you off where the steps for downward hike to Nongriat start.
  • It is advisable to take a porter if you have heavy backpacks or luggage. A porter will charge you about INR 500 for one way.

Travel Time : Cherrapunjee to Tyrna – 45 minutes; Tyrna to Nongriat (trek) – 2 hours

Double Decker Root Bridge

The 2 hour downward hike is going to be a very scenic as well as adventurous one. You’d be crossing many suspension bridges and root bridges along the forest trail. The Double Decker root bridge would be the highlight of your trip to Meghalaya and is without a doubt one of the 5 Reasons to Visit Shillong . Sit by the Double Decker root bridge and soak in the raw beauty of nature; this place will exceed your expectations in all possible means.

Waterfall and Pools

You can opt to hire a guide to take you around the village. The Rainbow Waterfall is a gorgeous waterfall, which is a short hike away from the village. Ask your guide to take you to natural pools in the village. Most of these pools are not traceable and is only known to the locals. Hence, you would not find any resource on the internet about these and this is what Nongriat is all about – discovering beautiful spots by yourself.

Spend the night in a homestay and engage in conversations with the locals around bonfire. This too is an experience in itself.

Nogriat Guest House – +91 8575787340 / +91 9774765508

Day 5 : Nongriat – Cherrapunjee – Dawki – Mawlynnong

  • On this day, you’d be required to trek back to Tyrna from Nongriat. The trek can get quite tiring. Again, it is advisable to hire a porter if you are not comfortable to walk with your luggage. It could take anywhere between 3 to 4 hours to reach back to Tyrna depending on your pace and fitness.
  • From Tyrna, book a cab till Cherrapunjee or hop onto a shared cab.
  • Book a taxi to take you to Dawki and then drop you at Mawlynnong. This would cost you between INR 2500-3000.
  • It is usually difficult to find a taxi in Mawlynnong for sightseeing or heading to Dawki and hence this is the most feasible way to include both the places in your itinerary.

Travel Time : Cherrapunjee to Dawki – 2.5 hours; Dawki to Mawlynnong – 1 hour

Dawki, a tiny hamlet in the border of India and Bangladesh is famous for its crystal clear river waters, views of Bangladesh plains and boat rides. Upon reaching, you’d feel as if you’ve arrived at a place where time has frozen. The calmness of the river, the beauty of the hills and the plains of Bangladesh visible at a faraway distance, would make you fall in love with the place at once. Do not miss out on taking a boat ride over the waters of Umngot river. If the Double Decker root bridge trek is the main highlight of your trip, the boat ride at Dawki is definitely going to be the second best experience!

meghalaya tourism itinerary

After spending a couple of hours in Dawki, head over to Mawlynnong and spend the night in one of the bamboo cottages in the village.

Budget Stays : Mawlynnong Bamboo Cottage | Dame Homestay| Umpohliew Homestay

Mid-ranged Stays : Areca Cottages | Streamside Cottage

Day 6 : Explore Mawlynnong & transfer to Shillong

This day would be dedicated in exploring the Asia’s Cleanest Village, a sleepy town, full of soul.

meghalaya tourism itinerary

Mawlynnong is a quiet retreat that you will never regret going to. Tourism has evolved in this village on the principles of eco tourism. You’d spot thatched khasi huts along the way, bamboo dustbins all throughout the village and every house containing beautiful gardens adorned with pretty flowers.

Living Root Bridge

Visit the single root bridge in Mawlynnong. If you think that after visiting the Double Decker root bridge in Nongriat, this would not be worth your time, then you are absolutely mistaken. All the living root bridges in Meghalaya are unique in their own way and totally worth your time. Hike to this bridge in Mawlynnong to encounter nature’s wonders coupled with age old traditions.

meghalaya tourism itinerary

Balancing Rock

In the outskirts of the village, there is a huge rock which is naturally balanced on another smaller rock. This has now become a popular place for visitors. It is said that the rock has stayed in the same position for centuries and also has some religious significance among the Khasi Tribe. Stop over at this place to have a look at the mysterious phenomena.

Bangladesh View Point

Head over to the Bangladesh Viewpoint to have a panoramic view of the plains of Bangladesh. Reaching this place involves a hike, so decide for yourself whether you’d want to visit this place or not.

Try to cover these places by 12pm so that you could have a quick lunch and head back to Shillong the same day.

Travel Time : Mawlynnong to Shillong – 2 hours

Spend the night in Shillong.

Start from Shillong post breakfast, by 7 am so that you reach Guwahati by 11am.

Travel Time: Shillong to Guwahati – 3 hours

It’s preferable to have your flight booked post 3pm. Else, it becomes a rush and you wouldn’t want to take a risk for sure.

Best Meghalaya Itinerary: 1 week and 10-day itinerary planning 2024

meghalaya tourism itinerary

Are you looking for the ultimate Meghalaya itinerary?

I have suggestions for both 1 week and 10 day trips to the Indian state known as the abode of the clouds .

If you are a nature lover or an adventure traveler, you should add Meghalaya to your India travel bucket list. Though the Northeast of India is often over looked when travel planning it is a hidden gem with plenty of the beautiful places to explore.

Meghalaya Itinerary: 1 week

If you don’t have a full 7 days like I outlined below, I’d stick to just Shillong and Cherapunjee for Meghalaya highlights.

Day 1: Arrive in the Abode of the Clouds

After you land there’s no need to stick around Guwahati – you should head straight to the state’s capital, Shillong.

  • Fly into Guwahati Airport .
  • Hire a car to drive you to Shillong (100 kms and about 3 hours)
  • Stop at Umiam Lake viewpoints along NH 40, Shillong-Guwahati highway for panoramic views of the long lake. This is on your way into town from Guwahati so you don’t need to go out of your way.
  • If you landed early enough to stop for lunch at Umiam Lake, enjoy a meal at Ri Kynjai , a lakeside resort with a restaurant and views of the lake.
  • Check into a hotel in Shillong for two nights. 📍 Recommended hotel: Vivanta Meghalaya Shillong

Panaromic view of Umiam Lake from Shillong-Guwahati highway with a sunset in the background.

Day 2: Shillong Highlights

Shillong earned the nickname “The Scotland of the East” from the British because the rolling green hills around the city reminded them of Scotland’s landscape. While there is a lot to do in the city, I personally think the best things to do include nature. If you have time, you can also add another day to check out more of the city.

  • Visit Elephant Falls in the morning. If you’re traveling with a friend or significant other, take a cute couple photo like the locals do.
  • In the afternoon, head out of town to check out the sweeping green views of Laitlum Canyon .
  • Enjoy dinner at one of the best restaurants in Shillong , such as Rynsan.

Laitlum Canyon, a top tourist place in Meghalaya

Day 3: Cherapunjee (Sohra)

Cherapunjee is one of the wettest places on earth and all that rainfall creates some magnificent waterfalls, caves, and more. Read more about the Top Things to do in Cherapunjee .

  • Drive from Shillong to Cherapunjee . It’s about 55 kms and Google Maps says it will take you 2 hours, but due to traffic and the road conditions you should plan for 4 hours on the road.
  • Check into your hotel and eat lunch there. 📍 Recommended hotel: Polo Orchid Resort
  • Drive to the viewpoint for the Seven Sisters waterfalls. Here seven separate waterfalls plunge from the rocky cliffside side by side. Their names pay homage to the seven northeastern states of India.
  • Next stop at Dainthlen Waterfall , where you’ll get a unique view from the top of a plunging waterfall.
  • Then drive to where you start the trek down to the magical Wei Sawdong waterfall. This was a highlight of my time in Meghalaya. The tiered waterfall is about a 30 minute hike (and climb!) down into the forest. The difficult sections where you need to navigate bamboo ladders are well worth it! The picture below doesn’t do the beauty of this location justice.

Wei Saw Dong waterfall, one of the best things to do in Cherapunjee

Day 4: Living Root Bridge Trek

Visit the village of Nongriat and trek to the Living Root Bridges . This beautiful hike is challenging but worth it! I’d reserve a whole day so you can take your time and enjoy every step (literally, since you’ll have to climb up and down over 3,500 stairs).

  • Start your day early by driving down to Tyrna village where the hike starts from.
  • Hike down to the single decker Living Root Bridge . Cross it and enjoy sitting on the rocks while you admire the ingenuity of the bridge with the calming sounds of the babbling river running below it.
  • If you’re up for a challenge continue to the double decker Living Root Bridge . Just remember you’ll need to return the way you came (back up the steps!) so it’s even more difficult on the way back.
  • Take rest breaks at the small shacks where you can buy water, juice, soda, chips, and Maggi to help you recharge.

Insider tip: You can rent walking sticks from locals by the entrance to the hike, I highly recommend doing so. The sticks offer much needed support going up and down the many stairs.

Day 5: Shnongpdeng & Umngot River

Most Meghalaya itineraries may recommend Dawki, but I’d advise against stopping there and, instead, continue on to the village of Shnongpdeng to see the Umngot River in all its glory.

  • Drive from Cherapunjee to Shnongpdeng (92 kms and about 5 hours).
  • Take a kayak out on the river and then take the guided canoe . (You can of course do one or the other but I recommend both to really enjoy the crystal clear water).

Insider tip: The time of year you are traveling matters greatly when planning to see the Umngot River which is famous for its crystal clear water . You’ll need to visit between October and March to witness the clear water. During rainy season, the dirt gets kicked up in the river and it becomes murky.

Overhead view of the Umngot River in Shnongpdeng with a single rowboat in the crystal clear water in Meghalaya India.

Day 6: Mawlynnong

This village was once dubbed the “Asia’s Cleanest Village” and is known for its cleanliness and eco-friendly practices.

  • Spend the morning exploring Mawlynnong , including stopping by the Living Root Bridge and taking a guided tour to learn more about the ways of living locally.
  • Drive back to Shillong (78 kms and about 5 hours).

Day 7: Travel day

If you only have a week, this concludes your Meghalaya itinerary. Depending on the time of your flight you can enjoy the morning exploring a couple more Shillong sights or head straight to Guwahati Airport.

  • Go for a stroll around Ward’s Lake and/or take a paddle boat out on the lake.
  • Drive from Shillong to Guwahati Airport (about 100 kms and 3 hours).

Ward's Lake in Shillong with the lake in the foreground and the bridge and park in the background. A couple paddle boats in the lake.

Meghalaya Itinerary: 10 days

If you have another few days to spend in Meghalaya, you’ll enjoy exploring some more off the beaten path places. Follow the itinerary for 1 week through Day 6 and then continue with the below suggested itinerary.

Day 7: Jowai

Located in the heart of the West Jaintia Hills , Jowai is situated 66 kilometers away from the bustling city of Shillong. Serving as the headquarters of the Jainta Hills district, Jowai is a gem yet to be fully unearthed on the traveler’s map of Meghalaya.

  • Drive from Shnongpdeng to Jowai (about 60 kms and 3 hours).
  • About halfway through the drive stop at Krang Suri waterfall.
  • Next stop at Phe Phe Falls . This two-tier waterfall takes about 30 minutes to walk to.
  • Check into your accommodation. 📍 Recommended stay: Odyssey Stays Jowai

Day 8: Jowai

  • Visit Tyrshi Falls , which is only a short walk from the road.
  • Visit the Nartiang Monoliths . Located in the quaint village of Nartiang, these towering stone sentinels offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Jaintia Hills.

Day 9: Jowai – Shillong

  • Drive from Jowai to Shillong (about 65 kms and 3 hours)
  • Enjoy a nice dinner at the Heritage Club in Shillong. Be sure to check out their deck area with a view of city and rolling hills in the distance.

The valley view from one of the best restaurants in Shillong, the Heritage Club.

Day 10: Travel Day

This concludes your Meghalaya itinerary. Depending on the time of your flight you can enjoy the morning exploring a couple more Shillong sights or head straight to Guwahati Airport.

Meghalaya Itinerary: FAQs

Answering some additional questions about traveling in Meghalaya.

How many days are enough in Meghalaya?

I recommend a full week because many of the highlights of Meghalaya take time to travel to. They are spread out and the roads to get to them aren’t in the best shape for easy/smooth driving so you’ll want to ensure you have enough time to get around.

The minimum time I would spend in Meghalaya is 5 days. And with a full 2 week Meghalaya itinerary you’ll get the complete “off the beaten path” experience.

What is the best time to travel to Meghalaya?

The abode of the clouds is best enjoyed with the clouds! Between the end of May to the end of September is best . Although it’s monsoon season, it’s also the best time to see the gushing water streams that transform the nature scenes in the surrounding area.

October to March the rainfall is much lighter and the weather cools down . October may be the perfect shoulder season month as you’ll get the end of the rains but still have the lush green landscapes the rains brought out.

If Shnongpdeng is a “must-see” of your Meghalaya itinerary, I’d say October is a good time because it’s the first month after the monsoons that the water of the Umngot River is likely to be crystal clear.

Is Meghalaya worth visiting?

Yes! Meghalaya is a unique travel destination with lots of hidden gems and beautiful landscapes to explore. There’s so many amazing places, landmarks, and historical sites to see in Meghalaya .

TL;DR: Best Meghalaya Itinerary: 1 week and 10 day

Whether you have one week or more in Meghalaya, nature lovers and adventure seekers will have plenty to explore. If you only have time to explore one place, I’d recommend making it Cherapunjee because of the abundance of natural beauty there. If you have time to drive to more remote locations, then you should explore the hidden gems amongst the Garo Hills . Regardless, I know you’ll have an unforgettable time in the abode of the clouds!

Meghalaya Trip – Is it safe to visit Meghalaya?

Walking around Langkawet

Meghalaya is perhaps one of the safest states that we have visited. The people are friendly and will always be ready to help you.

Meghalaya is also one of the safest places for women to travel. Being a matrilineal society, crimes against women are not much seen here. I have travelled solo in Meghalaya in remote places like Tura without any fear. Meghalaya is one of the states where I feel quite at home during solo travel as well.

How to Reach Meghalaya?

What is the Best time to visit Meghalaya?

Kongthong Meghalaya Tourism

Meghalaya has a tropical climate. The best time to visit is the winter months from October to March. But if you want to see the waterfalls in their full glory, visit at the end of the rainy season or just after it, i.e between August to the beginning of October.

Meghalaya is one such place in India that is beautiful in all the seasons. While our favourite time to visit is during the monsoon, the other seasons are equally enchanting. When you want to go for a Meghalaya trip actually depends on what you want to do.

April to June (Summer)

The weather is agreeable during this time and the temperature remains cool. Summer is definitely a peak season for a Meghalaya trip. This is a good time to go outdoors and explore. This is also a good time to do caving. However, the waterfalls will have less water. The Seven Sister Waterfalls in Cherrapunjee can be hardly seen during this time. It looks like small strips of water cascading down the mountain cliff, during the summer.

July to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon arrives in Meghalaya in June itself. However, from July it is peak monsoon. Since Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, it receives a lot of rainfall. Monsoon in Meghalaya is simply beautiful. Everything looks lush and green and the waterfalls get a life of their own. The clouds and fod renders a mystique and charm to the place.

Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram are particularly beautiful during this time. However, you will probably not get the clear water at Umngot River at Dawki during this time. Caving is also not recommended during this time.

In short, if you love to travel during the rain, we would definitely recommend you for a Meghalaya trip. However, be prepared for bouts of showers every now and then. Also, do carry your rain wear during this time.

October to November (Autumn)

This is one of the best seasons to visit Meghalaya. The rains have stopped, but the after effects of rain are still there with greenery everywhere and lively waterfalls. The weather is sunny and cool, perfect for outdoor activities and treks.

December to February (Winter)

The weather remains comfortably cold; however, the days are a bit warm. The mornings are usually foggy. Winters are also a good time to explore and do all the outdoor activities like trekking and caving. This is also a good time to visit Dawki. You will see the crystal clear waters of the river for which Dawki is so famous for.

Places to visit in your Meghalaya Trip

1) shillong.

Meghalaya travel Guide

Shillong, the capital of the state is a busy, trendy and energetic city with a vibrant population. There is a lot of British influence in the architecture of Shillong. With the beautiful hills around and the number of lakes, Shillong is referred to as the ‘Scotland of East’ . Police Bazar is the busiest point in Shillong with a busy marketplace. Most of the major hotels in Shillong are found around Police Bazar. You can use cozycozy to find a cheap accommodation for your trip to Meghalaya. Shillong has some fine cafes that also offer music. Shillong is the place of music lovers.

Cherrapunjee was said to be the wettest place on earth before Mawsynram took over. Naturally, the place is amazing during the monsoons.

The fascinating experience of Cherrapunjee is the visit to the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. The route from Tyrna is the easier one to reach Nongriat, but you have to descend as many as 3500 steps to reach the village. Once you are at Nongriat, the trouble will seem nothing compared to the views and hospitality you will receive there. It is advisable to stay for a night at Nongriat if you wish to do the Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek .

4) Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong Asia's cleanest village

Mawlynnong is declared to be the cleanest village in Asia . The place is around 80 km from Shillong and a trip to Mawlynnong and Dawki can be done in a day keeping your base at Shillong. The village is extremely clean and well-maintained, having bamboo dustbins at places. With greenery all around and colourful flowers and orchids blooming, Mawlynnong simply looks amazing.

Attractions in Mawlynnong: There is another single decker Living root bridge in Riwai village. There is a balancing rock that you can visit. The Skywatch is a tall bamboo structure that allows you to climb atop and have gorgeous views of the Bangladesh plains from there.Mawlynnong Asia’s cleanest village

Once you reach the place, you can see rolling green plains, dense forests amidst the backdrop of blue skies. You can get a shared sumo to Mawphlang as well. There are accommodation options at Mawphlang in case you want to stay there for the night. A sacred grove is a small forest area considered sacred by the Khasi tribe. The sacred grove usually has a number of medicinal plants and herbs and exotic plant species.

Attractions in Mawphlang: The sacred grove, Khasi Heritage Village.

Mawphlang is also the starting point of the David Scott Trail .

Meghalaya travel Guide

All the beautiful pictures of reflections of country boats on crystal clear water that you have seen are probably taken at the Umngot River in Dawki. Situated on the border of Bangladesh, Dawki is the last town on the Indian side before the Bangladesh border. You can reach Dawki by a shared Sumo from Bada Bazar in Shillong.

You can stay at Dawki or move forward to Shnongpdeng, another beautiful hamlet on the banks of Umngot River. There are a number of homestays at Shnongpdeng and camping options are also available at both Dawki and Shnongpdeng .

Attractions at Dawki & Shnongpdeng : A number of water activities like country boat ride, scuba diving, cliff jumping and fishing.

Know the People of Meghalaya

Babu Derma of Khasi community in Kongthong village

Places become livelier because of its people. Meghalaya is no exception. The place is the home to three tribes – Khasi, Jaintia and the Garos. The Khasis occupy the Khasi hills of central Meghalaya, the Garos occupy the western Garo Hills while the Jaintias occupy the Jaintia hills of eastern part of the state.

At present most of the tribes have embraced Christianity, but they have not forgotten their age-old customs. A common trait of the three tribes in Meghalaya is that they predominantly follow a matrilineal system where lineage and inheritance are passed through women of a family. The state has a liking to music and that can be seen in numerous rock bands.

All the three tribes are quite close to nature. They have preserved their ancient forests and groves. Their harmony with nature can be seen in the numerous root bridges that are found across the state.

Wangala Festival Tura Meghalaya North East India

The people are also quite fond of music and dance and that can be reflected in their festivals. The Khasi and Jaintia tribes praise nature, land, waterfalls, hills and rivers in their songs. The Garo folk songs are mostly based on agriculture, marriage, daily life and special events.

What to Eat in your Meghalaya Trip?

Pork roast - places to eat in Cherrapunjee

If you are a foodie, then you will definitely love Meghalaya.  Jadoh is the staple food in the Khasi region and is easily available. Various preparations of pork, fish and chicken are also available here.  If you want some great Khasi cuisine in Shillong, I would recommend you to head to Trattoria. This is a small eatery in Police Bazar and serves delectable Jadoh and other Khasi dishes. Food is relatively cheap in Meghalaya.

Jadoh in Meghalaya

You can also check out the cafes in Shillong. They serve great coffee and food items.

For the rest of the tourist destinations, there are small restaurants and eateries all along where you will get good food. Do not expect fancy restaurants in these places other than Shillong. In the smaller places and villages, you will probably stay at homestays and your food will be arranged by your homestay.

Vegetarian fares are also available in Meghalaya. Please note that Meghalaya, like the other northeastern states, are predominantly non-vegetarian. So in most of the places, you will get a variety of non-veg items. Vegetarian items will be present, but you might not get a variety there.

Khasi cuisines

Rice is an important part of their diet. They make a preparation of sticky rice and have it for breakfast. Lunch and dinner also comprises of rice.

Lakeside Resort Langkawet

The food seems amazing, when I saw the food part I forget the rest haha. Looks really delicious and I would like to try it. I hope you had an amazing time there! Is it expensive to organize all that by your own?

taleof2backpackers

Yes, the food is amazing there and really cheap! We had a great time there and Meghalaya is not that expensive. It is definitely a budget friendly place.

Medha Verma

There’s a whole world out there in the east of India which remains unexplored by me and it is such a pity! I can’t believe I have been around the country, from the North to the West to the South but never made it to Meghalaya. I have, of course, heard a lot about Shillong and Cherrapunji but Mawlynnong also looks like a great place to go, especially the living root bridge! Also, the river in Dawki looks so beautiful, I’d love to take a boat ride across it.

Thanks Medha! It is true that north-east India is often overlooked by travellers and tourists. Things are gradually changing now and we are really happy to be a part of this change, however small it may be.

Kristie

Meghalaya looks like a fantastic place to go! India is a place I have not explored at all, but if/when we do, this state seems like someplace to spend a lot of quality time. And your pictures are lovely!

Thanks Kristie! Please do visit India and explore this part of the world!

Alexander

It’s good to see bloggers providing an honest opinion about places. Instead of things do to, places that are not to be missed and lesser known places. I do value it a lot, that is why we read travel bloggers.

That is true Alexander! Thank you so much. I am also a great fan of your Finland posts! 🙂

Just from your pictures, I can see why It’s one of your favorite places, and yes they are giving me a serious case of wonderlust – especially that waterfall – it looks incredible. We would definitely be on board to see the water falls. They are always so nice to see and leave us in awe. It is incredible that so many of these cities are ranked among the highest in average rainfall. I don’t know if I could live somewhere that rained that much. The whole area does look beautiful though.

Debjani

Everytime I see a post from North East , I feel that very less people has written in such details like you guys have done it . Great summary , wouldn’t call this as detailed as the readers should go to all your other north east post to know each places you have written before.

Thank you very Much for this! What a crazy detailed write!

Just 1 question though: do you suggest we book a cab for the entirety of the trip from Shillong itself? Or, do we book different cabs at different points? For example, 1 cab for shillong sight seeing and dropping to cherrapunji, 1 cab for cherrapunji Sight seeing and to transfer to Mawlynnong and then a separate sight seeing cab there?

What would the cost and comfort implications be? We have a 1 year old of a friend travelling with us, so want clarify.

Thanks again for this wonderful blog.

Hello Darshan, Thanks for reading our blog. I think it will be good to book a cab for your entire trip. The cost will come up almost same if you are on move every day. In that way, you do not have to think of the next transport option. Just a suggestion, try to book cabs from Meghalaya, and not from Assam. Have a wonderful trip!

Piush Goyal

Thanks for nice blog on Meghalaya. Is it possible to cover Meghalaya by Scooter/bike, rented from SHillong for entire trip of 5 days. Are roads comfortable in driving around ? or shared cabs/tour package is best option?

Hello! Thanks for writing to us. Yes, you can cover Meghalaya on rented scooty or bike. The r oads are pretty good between Shillong and Cherrapunjee. There might be some bad patches, but it is not difficult to ride and drive around Meghalaya.

Harshada Surve

By evening, check-in a colonial-style Khasi house/a beautiful and speckless homestay tucked away on a hill off the city center. Evening free to relax and explore. Finish your day with an authentic Khasi dinner in Police Bazar or at your homestay.

Today we will head deeper into the Khasi hills & towards the more gorgeous parts of Meghalaya. Today’s journey is full of places to see. By the end of the day, you would have visited the following places:

  • Elephant falls.
  • Mawkdok Viewpoint.
  • Wha Kaba falls.
  • Arwah Caves.

For the night, check-in to a simple and very hospitable Khasi homestay/guest house.

Today, you can either choose to visit the following places

  • Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven sisters falls).
  • Dainthlen Falls.[Time & weather permitting.]
  • Nonkalikhai Falls.

If you enjoy swimming, do not forget to bring your swim-wear with you, you will need them when you find the kid inside you unable to hold back from jumping in the turquoise blue natural pools.

Today, we start for Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village . But before we head there, we will take a detour towards the India – Bangladesh border at Dawki and experience the transparent waters of the Umngkot river. Today’s plan will look something like this:

  • You can go for a boat ride on the crystal clear waters of the Umngot river if you choose to.
  • Drive down to the Tamabil BOP and shake hands/interact with the jawans of Bangladesh Rifles.
  • Drive to Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village. It’s a beautiful drive from one ridge to another overlooking lush-green hill and deep cloud-covered valleys.
  • Check-in to a nice and simple home-stay not far from where the village overlooks the Bangladesh plains beyond a valley below.

Day 5 – Mawlynnong to Shillong

Wake up early and take a walk around the beautiful village with its hundred-year-old Church to see how everyone, from kids to elders, strive to keep even the tiniest bit of trash off the streets and everywhere else other than the dustbins.

Head back to your Khasi homestay to freshen up and the check-out.

Post breakfast, we will be visiting the single-decker living root bridge at the Riwai village. You might also want to visit the balancing rock on your way. Once back in Shillong, explore Police Bazar in the evening and enjoy the wide range of street – food there.

On the last day of your trip, take it easy. Check-out around 10 or so and then do some last-minute shopping from Shillong, if you haven’t already. On your way back to Guwahati, feel free to stop again at the Umiam lake or at the Umiam lake viewpoint before heading straight to the airport.

How to Plan an Awesome Trip to Meghalaya for 7 Days

Photo of Aditi & Deepak

Meghalaya is one of the most stunning places in India. It is like stepping into another world altogether. The name itself means 'Abode of Clouds', and true to its name, it is where clouds make their homes. If nature interests you, if new experiences are what you are looking for, if you are ready to be dazzled by starry nights, magnificent waterfalls and more, then you must definitely visit Meghalaya! In this blog post, we shall tell you how to plan an awesome trip to Meghalaya for 7 days.

Best time to visit Meghalaya:

The best time to visit Meghalaya is between the months of October to April. Blessed with a moderate climate all through the year, every season you have a reason to visit.

The route to be followed for a trip to Meghalaya for 7 days:

Guwahati - Shillong - Cherrapunji - Mawlynnong - Shillong - Guwahati

Detailed Itinerary for a trip to Meghalaya for 7 days:

Guwahati - Shillong

Arrive at the Guwahati airport, and hire a cab for transfer to Shillong. You can even pre-book a cab for the entire trip for your convenience. Today you can visit the pretty Ward's Lake. Later in the evening, you can head to some of the pubs and cafes in Shillong.

Ward's Lake

Shillong - Cherrapunji

Enroute, you can stop over at the pretty Elephant Falls.

The route from Shillong to Cherrapunji is very beautiful with some amazing views of the mountains. Enroute, you can try zip lining to set your adrenaline rushing as you go sliding down a rope between two mountains. The ziplining in Meghalaya is one of the best in the country, with its gorgeous placement and descent over lush green mountains.

NohKaLikai Falls

Nohkalikai Waterfalls Visit

Tried 'caving' ever? Meghalaya has some of the world's most magnificent caving networks, and today, you can head to one of those. It will be quite an experience as some of these are low at places, and you have to crouch, slither, walk, adventure your way through these caves. Krem Liat Prah is one of the known longest caves located in Meghalaya with a total length of approximately 31 km.

Nohkalikai Falls

Photo of NohKaLikai Falls, Meghalaya by Aditi & Deepak

Then you should visit the Nohkalikai Falls - India's tallest plunge waterfall and arguably the most photogenic as well. It falls from the top of a cliff to the base without a single break over the rocks. In the background, are the mountains and a wild, virgin jungle and it makes for a very exciting trek from the top of the mountain down to the falls. The sheet of water collects at the base in a small pool that is amazingly blue, and on a warm summer day, it is a lot of fun to sit with your legs in the water or swim in the shallow areas.

Living Root Bridge

Living Roots Bridges Trek

Today, you can trek to one of the most fascinating and extraordinary natural sights in the country - the Living Root Bridges . These bridges are a set of natural bridges formed by barks and trunks of trees that lie on either side of a stream.

Double Decker route bridge

Total time to go and return: 5 hours

It is a beautiful trek, and in your quest to reach there, you will pass through small pretty villages, past narrow streams, and a jungle. You shall also cross a rope bridge, below which lies one of the bluest natural pools you shall ever see.

Cherrapunjee

Cherrapunji - Mawlynnong

Heard of Mawlynnong? Asia's cleanest village. The village takes great pride in its cleanliness and you won't see even a leaf on the road. Mix with the villagers, eat lunch with them, climb up a tree house, sit on a hill, watch the magnificent views and take loads of pictures! Mawlynnong is beautiful.

Crystal Clear River

From the top of the tree house, you can even see Bangladesh and spot shooting stars! ????

Mawlynnong - Dawki - Shillong

Today, you can drive to the Dawki bridge over river Umngot. The river is crystal clear and you can see through the surface from the top of the bridge as well. It flows between India and Bangladesh and is a major tourist attraction in Meghalaya.

In the evening, head back to Shillong, and explore some more cafes and pubs in the area.

You can also travel to Cherrapunjee by means of a shared sumo/alto. These shared vehicles may be found in Bara Bazaar. Keep in mind that, despite the fact that Sohra and Cherrapunjee are distinct places, they are both near each other.

Places to visit in Sohra

The tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Falls , can be seen from a height of 350 meters. A beautiful sight to see is a tall waterfall, which shoots straight off a cliff without stopping. You can follow a signboard that marks the route to the waterfall's mouth and head off on a hike to get there.

Mawsmai Cave is a well-lit cave located 6 km from Cherrapunjee and composed of limestone. The cave is accessible via an entrance point. In fact, there are 2 entrance points. You need to pay up at the ticket counter (approx. INR 100) and through a gate and onto a pathway that leads you to the entrance of the cave. The passage through the cave is undulating and would require manoeuvring around, hence, if you have arthritis or any health problems related to your foot, we'd recommend you skip this one. Upon entering the cave, you’d be able to spot unique limestone formations, and a small stream that passes through it, and eventually, the cave will get narrow and you would need to squeeze yourself out of it.

When you arrive at the exit of the cave (exit 1), you will notice another small signboard with 'Entrance 2' written on it to the second Mawsmai cave. You could choose to cave through it or not- that'd be your choice entirely. The Mawsmai Cave is a popular stop for tourists, so you should not pass it up. This cave does not require the services of a guide to visit.

The Arwah cave is one of Meghalaya's hidden gems. To get to Arwah Caves, you'll need to go off the normal path and cross a muddy field. There is a lovely bridge that takes you to the cave's entrance. As there are no established pathways, this destination is best visited with the assistance of a guide. After you enter the cave, you'll come to a severe downward slope, after which your trek will be both tough and exciting, followed by crawling over jagged rocks and sharp edges. Within the cave, you're likely to discover fossils and limestone structures. Arwah caverns would undoubtedly offer an exciting experience of a lifetime and thus is a must-visit.

After a hectic day of sightseeing in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), return to your hotel or homestay in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and try to fall asleep early. Day 4 would include a lot of walking and a trip to the most anticipated and discussed destination of your Meghalaya travel plan and itinerary.

Day 4: Cherrapunjee (Sohra) - Tyrna Village - Nongriat Village

Book a private taxi from the Taxi Stand in Cherrapunjee (Sohra) to Tyrna Village, which should cost about INR 500.

The taxi would leave you at the starting point of a steep downward trek to Nongriat.

If you have a lot of luggage or a big back, it is strongly advised that you hire a porter. For one way, a porter will charge you INR 500. It is also advisable to rent a long bamboo stick at the cost of INR 20 per stick, which will be a boon when trekking to and back from Nongriat.

Duration to travel from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) to Tyrna village?

  • About 45 minutes
  • Trek from Tyrna to Nongriat: About 2 hours.

Places to visit in Nongriat Village

The trek down will be quite beautiful as well as adventurous. You'll pass many suspension bridges (shaky ones) and root bridges on the forest path. The Double Decker living root bridge would be the highlight of your visit to Meghalaya and is without a doubt one of the primary reasons to have this trip. You can sit by the root bridge and marvel at its natural beauty and its surroundings; it will exceed your expectations in every way.

Waterfall and Water-Pools

There are various options for how you may spend your time at this place. You can hire a tour guide to show you around town, or explore on your own. The Rainbow Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall that is only a short walk from the village. Ask your guide to take you to natural pools in the village. The majority of these pools are unidentifiable and only known by locals. As a result, you won't find any information about these on the internet; this is why Nongriat exists - to discover beautiful locations on your own.

Spend the night in a homestay and converse with the locals around bonfires about life, traditions, culture, and the history of this place. This is also a unique unforgettable experience in itself.

Take a taxi to Dawki and then the same that will drop you off at Mawlynnong. This would cost you anything between INR 2500 and INR 3000.

When you get to this place, you'll feel as if time has come to a halt. The calmness and intense serenity of the river, the majesty of the hills and valleys in Bangladesh seen from a distance, and the peace of mind would instantly entice you to adore it. Don't pass up a trip on the Umngot River in Dawki . The boat cruise over the Umngot River will be the second-best experience if the Double Decker root bridge trek is your primary attraction.

Spend the night in one of the bamboo cottages in Mawlynnong after spending a few hours in Dawki.

To see its natural wonders coupled with ancient traditions and customs, trek to this bridge without amiss.

The Unique Balancing Rock

There is a huge rock that is naturally balanced on a smaller rock in the village's outskirts. This location has become a popular stopping point for tourists. It is claimed that the stone has remained in the same place for centuries, and it has religious significance among the Khasi people. Stop by this area to see the fascinating phenomena.

A view of Bangladesh
