Bab Al Nojoum Al Mugheirah Resort is set within 45 hectares of beautifully managed park and reserve in the breezy coastal town of Mirfa. It’s located 160 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi city, so is a 90-minute car ride away for holidaymakers seeking a unique experience.

“It’s an environmentally friendly tourist destination where people can enjoy their stay and at the same time experience activities that enrich their knowledge,” says Ahmed Al Shaikh Al Zaabi, director of delivery at Modon Properties, which developed the resort.

The nature reserve has 20 gleaming Airstream trailers and 20 converted cargo containers that are being used as cabins. The Airstreams feature a king bed with an option for a pull-out sofa, while campers can also choose between a one-bedroom cabin, which fits up to three adults, and a two-bedroom cabin for up to five adults. All cabins have their own sun deck and plunge pool, while both accommodation types feature a fully stocked kitchenette, bathroom, outdoor seating area, fire pit and grill. While all dwellings are equipped with air conditioning, campers are encouraged to use it minimally.

“We want to provide the most authentic outdoor adventure experience and reconnect our guests with nature,” says Siddharth Mehra, Al Mugheirah Resort's camp manager.

On the property, camp hosts are referred to as “dream makers”, as they pride themselves on tailoring an individualised experience for each camper. Upon arrival, guests receive a personalised guide compiled around booking information and special interests. The resort offers a host of activities and excursions, including biking, farming, falconry, watersports, horse riding and cooking classes. Children are incentivised to get involved, too, with a passport booklet of their own for which they can collect stamps for each activity completed and redeem them for treats.

Location-based experiences are also on offer. Abu Dhabi has an estimated 3,000 dugongs, the second highest population in the world after Australia, and most are found in the waters just off the coast of the western region. “Dugongs are protected animals and they are actually seen in the waters not too far from here. As part of our efforts to create one-of-a-kind experiences, we have our own boats that will take guests into the water to spot these majestic animals,” says Mehra.

Simply being on the property is a treat for nature watchers as the reserve is brimming with wildlife such as urial sheep, sand and mountain gazelles, foxes and several types of birds.

A lap pool overlooks the ocean

Sustainability is at the heart of Al Mugheirah Resort, informing everything from the way food is sourced to how people move around the expansive property. Procurement trips to the local fish market provide fresh menu items and serve well as excursions for culinary enthusiasts. Campers can choose to have the catch of the day prepared for them by a chef at their private BBQ pit or do it themselves.

Other facilities include battery-operated club cars, an education centre where movies and documentaries are screened, a cafe serving drinks and desserts, as well as a full-service restaurant. The Oasis is an outdoor pool deck complete with a lap pool situated on a ridge overlooking the ocean. Guests can settle in poolside with refreshing cocktails and light Mediterranean bites.

With all-inclusive packages, modern amenities and natural treasures, Al Mugheirah Resort is a premium environmental getaway. “The most important message I want to convey is that this is an eco-friendly destination showcasing the environment of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, and we want to sustain it while enjoying it at the same time,” says Al Zaabi.

Al Mugheirah Resort is offering promotional rates for its standard and full-board stays until December 28; an overnight stay in an Airstream is between Dh600 and Dh730; a one-bedroom cabin costs Dh900 to Dh990 per night; and a two-bedroom cabin is priced between Dh1,200 and Dh1,320. Full board includes breakfast, a community dinner and guest activities.

Responsible Travel

The seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates , including Abu Dhabi, are known for their hard commercialization and top business affairs. Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, is an ultra-luxurious business and travel destination. With Maseratis and Mercedes running on roads like an everyday car, and high rise buildings populating every street, Abu Dhabi has a very soft side that consists of reserves for endangered animals, a mangrove national park, and educational programs to teach the importance of wildlife protection. When visiting Abu Dhabi, don’t just enjoy its luxe dinings and fine palace-like hotels, instead be a responsible traveler. Here are a few ways you can contribute to sustainability -

  • Instead of using plastic bottles, compromise on the taste and use the absolutely safe-to-drink tap-water of Abu Dhabi
  • Walk Not only is it good for health, Abu Dhabi has some of the best walking spots like the Al Emarat Park, Corniche Walkway, The NAtional Zoo and so many!
  • Use the public transport system like buses and metro instead of hiring your own car. Traveling together with the locals will give you an insider view of what life in Abu Dhabi is like.
  • Opt for eco-friendly hotels. Abu Dhabi is best known for its luxurious hotels that tourists can’t wait to enjoy. What most tourists don’t know is that Abu Dhabi also has many eco-friendly hotels that are no less than other luxury hotels to make you feel special.

Air Quality and Pollution

Abu Dhabi has moderate to slightly flawed air-quality. The air is contaminated with two types of pollutants, PM2.5 and PM10, both of which are very harmful to human health at higher levels. The primary contaminant is PM2.5, which has a group of 56.2% as a daily average. The leading cause of pollution is the high level of industrial smoke and cars running in the emirate . When these industrial smokes combine with fog at night, it creates smog that causes hazy vision in the day. Abu Dhabi has been conducting a program called “Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week” since 2008 to educate people about the need to control air pollution. However, it received a significant blow when the World Bank’s report in 2018 listed Abu Dhabi as “the city with the worst air,” leaving far behind China and India.

Respect the Culture

Abu Dhabi is a famous destination around the world; hence it is common to find people from different cultures and religion here. However, the UAE’s official religion is Islam, and when a country has a specific official religion, it is necessary to follow some important rules so that the local traditional believes, and views are not disrespected. Some of these are -

  • If you are a non-Islamic visitor then you might not be familiar with different rules that apply when entering a mosque. Men and women are required to dress in proper decent clothing that covers their arms and legs as much as possible. Women are also required to wear a stole to cover their head, hair and neck (like a hijab does).
  • As UAE is a very conservative land, certain things normal for westerners such as cross-dressing your gender, public display of affection, drinking/getting drunk on streets, unmarried couples staying in the same hotel room, rude gestures while driving, greeting with left hand, speaking ill of the royal family, and having pork are all ethically rude as well as unlawful.

Ecotourism, biodiversity and nature conservation might not be your immediate thought when exploring the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to the glitz and glamour of the cosmopolitan cities portrayed on the covers of glossy campaigns.

However, with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launching The UAE National Ecotourism Project , across all seven Emirates, this is all about to change.

The desert is unmistakably an extreme environment yet, is still home to a diverse range of flora and fauna stretching across land, air and underwater. There are 43 protected areas in the UAE spanning 14% of the country and a selection of these are open to the public. Many are free to visit and all of them provide visitors with unique experiences and, perhaps more importantly, the opportunity to surround yourself with elements of the natural world.

Special attention is focused on areas where turtles are known to return with extra precautions, awareness and education a high priority to ensure the best possible safety during nesting season.

One such protected area, which is open to the public, is the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary , a 2,002h area listed as a RAMSAR Wetlands of International Importance. The passion Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi has for preserving the natural environment and educating youth of its value and importance is evident through the short presentation he gives on arrival to the sanctuary. Visitors are then invited to assist with weighing, measuring and recording the vitals of the hatchlings before being escorted to the beach, just on sunset, to assist in their safe release at the water’s edge.

Visiting the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is free of charge and the restricted times are due to the ongoing balance of protecting the natural ecosystem and providing the opportunity for visitors to benefit from the tranquil atmosphere the wetlands create.

More information can be found on the EAD website .

Entry to Al Wathba Wetlands

You might be surprised to learn just how much time people spend on the water considering the UAE is initially recognised as a nation surrounded by endless deserts and towering sand dunes.

Seasoned travellers understand the best way to experience a country is to behave like locals and, let me assure you, in a country blanketed by powerful heat during the summer, the locals gather around the water at every opportunity. Water sports are a favourite pastime and for those who enjoy combining recreation activities with nature experiences, a visit to the Eastern Mangroves wetland reserve is a definite must.

Eastern Mangroves

There are organised tours you can join where experienced guides will educate and answer questions along the way – the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency has provided a list of respected and well-established operators here . Kayaking is another popular mode of transport however, if you are looking for something a little bit a different, hiring your own Eco Donut to explore the Eastern Mangrove Nature Park, is a fun option.

The Eco Donuts are operated 100% off-grid, powered by the solar panels positioned on the roof and are easily manoeuvred by the most novice of seamen – including children! They are available for hire in an area where motorised boats aren’t permitted, making the adventure incredibly safe for all ages. Onboard you will find designated space to store snacks and beverages for an onboard picnic or, you can park at one of the jetties along the way where you can sit, or explore, a little more on foot.

Eco donut boats are a fun way to see the Eastern Mangroves National Park in Abu Dhabi

The Eco Donuts comfortably seat 6 people and are available for hire for 30 minutes to 2 hours. More information can be found on their website .  (Also keep your eye out for online specials and vouchers which make the adventure even more affordable.)

Indoor experiences to enjoy in the warmer months, the falcon hospital.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Tourism isn’t the driving force behind the Falcon Hospital as their primary focus is diagnosing and treating injured falcons within their state-of-the-art intensive care clinical examination rooms and operating units.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) has enjoyed many awards since its establishment in 2007 including, most recently, the 2018 Middle East Responsible Tourism Award and the 2017 World’s Responsible Tourism Award for the second consecutive year – and it is easy to see why.

The hospital is opened for organised tours which begins with a visit back through history focusing on the important role and heritage of Falconry in the Middle East. The local guide, in our case, had a friendly and interactive approach and seemed happy to share his vast knowledge as led by questions from the intimate sized crowd.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital - close inspection of one of their patients

The 2-hour tour begins in the more formal rooms and moves directly into the main examination room where you are invited to watch a simple procedure of a ‘pedicure’ or ‘feather repair’ on one of the admitted falcons. Photos are encouraged and there is even an opportunity for an obligatory hold of one of the majestic animals. The tour includes both indoor and outdoor holding areas as well as the secluded moulting rooms. At the time of our visit, there were 200 falcons hospitalised on the grounds with 1800 recorded releases to date.

Due to the success of the Falcon Hospital, the facilities have also been extended to treat critically injured cats and dogs and also provide accommodation for them in a five-star pet hotel. There are also adoption and foster care options available on site.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is open to the public from Sunday to Thursday with a 10:00am or 2:00pm tour start time and bookings need to be made in advance. The Saturday tour is only available at 10:00am from October 1 st to May 31st. More information can be found on the website .

THE GREEN PLANET

The Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet provides the opportunity to connect with elements of nature, including animal encounters, within a tropical rainforest setting. The facility is built around a magnificent tree, which is the largest indoor, man-made and life-sustaining tree in the world and houses over 3,000 plants and animals.

There are three distinct sections which begin the story starting with the forest floor, where you are met by animals such as the Archer Fish. Move on up into the mid-story layer where you might be lucky enough to hold a Python, then continue to spiral up to the top of the canopy which is directly below the spectacular bio-dome.

Along the way you might see the iconic Sloth just ‘hanging around’ and there are plenty of parrots and other fascinating birds, including my personal favourite the Toucan, to entertain and delight visitors of all ages.

The Green Planet Dubai - outside view of the building

Keep your eye out for organised educational talks through-out your visit, allow plenty of time to wander around all the display cabinets and get involved with the interactive educational equipment which all provide insight into the daily activities one could expect to find in a rainforest.

Ecosystem Education at The Green Planet Dubai

The care and knowledge shared by the award-winning and highly educated staff is second to none and it is hard to imagine any of the animals within the new-age zoo-like enclosure to be anything other than happy and content with their surrounds.

The building itself holds a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certificate due to its energy-conserving results and the consistent temperature range of 24-27 degrees Celsius, makes it a perfectly comfortable haven for visitors. Even the waterfall uses recycled water and the sound of running water adds to the effectiveness created by this ecosystem immersion.

Resident Sloth at Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet is open from Sunday to Wednesday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Thursday to Saturday from 10:00am-8:00pm. Tickets are sold up to one hour before closing however, I would recommend you allow a couple of hours to really enjoy all the available experiences. More information can be found on their website .

DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

In continuing with the thoughts of David Attenborough where he insists “no one will protect what they don’t care about” suggests the idea that aquariums provide an opportunity for the general public to experience, connect and better understand, the importance of our oceans.

You can’t help but be impressed the instant you walk through the 48 metre long Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tunnel on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall.   No matter how often you see it, be enthralled by the spectacular 10-million litre aquarium tank which, in true UAE style, is one of the largest suspended aquariums in the world.

This truly spectacular setting proudly accommodates around 140 diverse species of aquatic animals, is home to the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks in the world, as well as many other species of sharks and rays.

Underwater World 05

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo take the initiative to introduce educational presentations throughout the centre with the intention to provide insight into the habits and behaviours of all the marine animals who call the ocean home. The aquarium offers visitors plenty of opportunities for interaction including the cage snorkelling experience or a shark dive.

For the slightly less brave of visitors, a ride in the glass-bottom boat, where you can assist in feeding the giant trevally, is something our family highly recommends.

Keep an eye on notices and announcements throughout your visit as there are many other presentations and feeding opportunities during the day which are suitable for a full range of age groups.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is open from 10:00am till 12:00pm Midnight with the last admission at 11.30pm – but please, do yourself a favour and allow longer than 30 minutes for your visit.

There is no denying that virtual reality (VR) technology can take us on multiple journeys without even leaving the comfort of our home although, those seeking out adventure understand it’s the submersion which makes you feel alive. Spending time in the outdoors can provide the necessary elements needed to relax and rejuvenate your soul and connect with the living planet stirs feelings of empathy and compassion. These feelings are crucial for humanity during a time when global warming is at the top of the agenda and the list of endangered and vulnerable animals is ever growing.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Pura the first eco resort in Abu Dhabi is now open.

Head on over to Jubail Island to immerse yourself in nature and be pampered in style.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Abu Dhabi does it again, the Capitals first eco retreat,  Pura  is now open on Jubail Island. This adults-only hideaway offers a laid-back escape where the focus of each stay is its nature-filled surrounds.

abu dhabi eco tourism

The retreat takes its name from the popular Costa Rican phrase “Pura Vida” – which translates from Spanish to “pure life”. The eco-focused hideaway also follows the Costa Rican lifestyle, which is all about slowing down and enjoying life’s little pleasures. It’s exactly this essence that Emirati owner Ibrahim Al Mannaee is trying to capture at Pura.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Reachable via a sandy, single-track road that winds for around three kilometers through  Jubail Island’s  mangroves, Pura Eco Retreat is housed in a gleaming white villa with a bright turquoise roof. As you are shuttled along the road towards the retreat, it’s impossible not to notice the distinct change in the air.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Each of the exterior walls of Pura’s main building has a huge purple wildlife mural, painted by artist Fatima Al Hammadi. Inside the glass entranceway is a sleek minimalist lobby where guests check-in. For Al Mannaee, the retreat is a place to highlight Abu Dhabi’s natural archipelago landscape. “Abu Dhabi is made up of over 200 islands, but how many of us have actually experienced those private islands,” he says.

abu dhabi eco tourism

While island-living is very much the highlight here, guests at Pura are not expected to fend for themselves in a nature-filled wilderness. Instead, butlers are on hand to show people to their rooms.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Golf-buggies transport visitors to their dome-shaped suites where a well-stocked welcome pack awaits. A king-size bed offers scenic views of the surrounding mangroves and all rooms come with coffee-making facilities.

abu dhabi eco tourism

In keeping with the Pura Vida lifestyle, guests are encouraged to digitally detox, which is why there’s no Wi-Fi in the domes. Instead, there are lots of complimentary activities to keep guests entertained.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Activities include fat biking, kayaking, yoga, stargazing, birdwatching and more. Further along the shoreline, there’s a private beach and access to the water – exclusively for those staying overnight.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Al Mannaee is hopeful that this close connection with nature, coupled with the home comforts that travelers want during a staycation, will entice people to visit. “We would like people to experience a different side to Abu Dhabi, Pura offers the chance to experience a rustic camping style experience, but in full comfort and close to the city”, Al Mannaee said.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Breakfast is taken on the terrace behind the main villa. A private oval-shaped pool backed by the mangroves sits beside a terrace where food is served under billowy white shades.

abu dhabi eco tourism

On the platform behind this spot, beanbags and easy chairs have been set up to encourage people to sit, pause and drink in the view. This is also where yoga classes take place, giving guests the chance to practice their asana right on the mangroves’ edge.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Beyond this terrace is the main dining area. Dinner bookings are also available for the general public, but reservations are essential. The seating areas and tables have been crafted from wooden pallets with brightly colored, locally made table runners and cushions covers.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Overhead, lampshades created out of fishing baskets reminiscent of those used by local fishermen swing in the breeze and there are a few open tepee-style tables set out on the sand.

abu dhabi eco tourism

The team plans to collaborate closely with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi to ensure activities fit with the natural environment. They have also been involved in planting more mangrove trees in the surrounding waters.

Within touching distance of Jubail Island’s mangrove forests, Pura gives visitors a front-row seat to nature’s beauty. Staff can provide binoculars for wildlife spotting, and there’s certainly no shortage of opportunities.

abu dhabi eco tourism

More than 90 different types of birds frequent the forest including flamingo, herons, dunlin and whimbrel. The threatened greater spotted eagle is also a regular visitor to the shoreline. And the birds are not the only creatures that call this place home. Inside the mangrove canopy are frogs, seagrass, spiders and countless species of fish.

abu dhabi eco tourism

With exceptional dining, rustic style living available just a short drive from the city, what are you waiting for. Leave the kids and the laptops at home and come unwind with nature.

Soak up the island way of life with the added luxury of a clean conscience at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort  in Abu Dhabi, the first hotel in the Middle East recognised and awarded by The Oceanic Standard for its revolutionary plastic-free and sustainable initiatives. Our mission is to blend luxury and sustainability seamlessly, and we’re immensely proud to have been recognised with this prestigious Ocean Champion badge.

The first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates

The resort has been the first hotel in the United Arab Emirates to set up an on-site water filtration system, reducing energy usage and transport. The team believes that hotels and resorts must join in the fight to preserve our planet for future generations and recognise that going green doesn’t necessarily mean cutting out the luxuries. Becoming as sustainable as possible will not only benefit the earth, but also our collective conscience.

Recognition from The Oceanic Standard

The Oceanic Standard is an international NGO that works to verify and spotlight eco-friendly hotels the world over. Hotels that make a significant effort to reduce their environmental impact are awarded for their efforts, to encourage a positive shift in the industry. Many elements of each hotel’s practices are assessed, both on the surface and behind-the-scenes, and these include single-use plastic consumption, food waste management, sustainable food procurement and the use of non-toxic products. Here at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island, we have taken important actions to promote environmental health and we’re delighted to be celebrated with an Ocean Champion badge.

Steps towards sustainability

During your stay, you can enjoy personal care products that are non-toxic or packaged in bulk containers or glass containers instead of single-use plastic. The resort is partnered with Trust Your Water, a Dubai-based water management company. We’ve taken steps to improve our single-plastic usage, from refillable shower amenities to swapping plastic straws for eco-friendly wheat straw alternatives. We ensure takeaway containers are made with fibre-based materials and cloth laundry bags. Other eco initiatives launched at the resort include our extensive in-house recycling scheme, greywater recycling, environmentally friendly thermostats in guest rooms and marine degradable packaging for toiletries.

Supporting local sea-turtles and humpback dolphins

A recent study conducted by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) found that over 700 humpback dolphins live close to the coast of Abu Dhabi, making it the largest known population in the world. You can also enjoy an eco-tour through the nearby Saadiyat mangroves to view these beautiful creatures in the wild, as the humpbacks are often seen hunting in the wetland forests that border the sea. Sea turtles have long been a protected species in the Gulf, and you can find seven different species in the surrounding undisturbed beach at the resort, including the endangered Hawksbill. 16 things to know before going to Abu Dhabi

Natasha Amar

abu dhabi eco tourism

With tips on packing, etiquette and safety, here's what you need to know before going to Abu Dhabi © frantic00 / Getty Images

With its rich cultural heritage, sublime landscapes, interesting museums, contemporary architecture, vibrant food scene and kind-hearted people, Abu Dhabi  is a delight.

Abu Dhabi fosters a sense of unhurried living where people take the time to chat. They’ll even go out of their way to show you around an art gallery or point you in the right direction should you find yourself looking for a certain bakery in a maze of backstreets.

With a sizable expat population in the UAE , Emiratis are no strangers to Western culture, but familiarizing yourself with Abu Dhabi’s cultural norms and etiquette makes every interaction more respectful. These practical tips can help you plan your itinerary and know what to expect in terms of weather, general health and safety.

1. Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world

Abu Dhabi is the kind of city where you could forget your wallet or passport in a taxi or mall food court, and you’re almost certain to find it there or have it returned to you by someone, cash and cards intact. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are uncommon. It’s generally safe for everyone to walk around late at night.

2. Plan to spend at least four days in Abu Dhabi

Spread over 67,340 sq km (26,000 sq miles), Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate in the UAE. Besides the Rub al Khali (the world’s largest continuous sand desert), it’s home to rugged mountains, a 700km-long (435-mile-long) coastline and nearly 200 islands – all offering diverse experiences that are best savored on an itinerary that doesn’t feel rushed.

While you’ll find museums, shopping malls, skyscrapers, theme parks and mangroves in Abu Dhabi city, the emirate is also home to Al Ain, where fortresses, oases, ancient tombs and mountains offer an unexpected glimpse of the UAE’s history. Traveling around Abu Dhabi slowly gives you the chance to venture out to the verdant oases of Liwa and admire the gigantic orange-red dunes of Rub Al Khali, a 2½-hour drive from the capital.

Kayakers paddle through waters surrounded by mangroves with city skyscrapers in the distance

3. Pack clothing and shoes for the outdoors

To fully appreciate Abu Dhabi’s wealth of outdoor experiences, it’s worth crafting an itinerary that includes activities like cycling along the Corniche , kayaking through the tidal lagoons of Jubail Mangrove Park , practicing your golf swing among saltwater lakes and sand dunes at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and exploring the mighty dunes around Liwa Oasis by fat bike.

Depending on the season, pack clothing, shoes, a hat and a day pack for outdoor excursions and activities. Compared to the mild weather in the city and coast, temperatures in the interior region (such as the desert and mountains) can reach extremes. So, it’s a good idea to bring layers, especially if you plan on visiting between November and March. In summer, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen make it easier to bear the heat and humidity.

4. Get around by taxi with the Abu Dhabi Taxi app

If you plan on getting around Abu Dhabi by taxi, download the Abu Dhabi Taxi booking app ( App Store and Google Play ) on your smartphone in advance. You’ll thank yourself for doing so instead of trying to hail one on the street in 40°C (104°F) weather.

The app connects you to the nearest available taxi, which usually arrives at your location in under 10 minutes. You can also book a wheelchair-friendly taxi using the app. You’ll need to specify your pick-up and drop-off location, which means that you’re less likely to get lost, even when trying to reach a hole-in-the-wall biryani restaurant in Downtown Abu Dhabi.

Alternatively, for use in the wider country, download and use the UAE-based  Careem smartphone app to book rides.

5. Hop on the free shuttle or take the public bus

The complimentary Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus service connects eight routes around the city and attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi , Qasr Al Hosn , Qasr Al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . These modern air-conditioned buses are wheelchair-accessible and are an excellent way to explore Abu Dhabi Island, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.

To travel on public buses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, buy the prepaid Hafilat Smart Card at the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station or any branch of the supermarket chain Lulu Hypermarket. Load money onto it using the recharge machines at bus stations. To pay, scan in and out on the validator in the buses. Bus journeys cost Dhs2 plus 5 fils per km.

People in swimwear and people wearing clothes that cover their bodies fully enjoy time on the beach

6. Dress appropriately to blend in with the city’s residents

Choose to dress according to the setting of your planned activities for the day. To be respectful while visiting a museum, the markets in Al Mina or cultural sights such as Qasr Al Hosn and Wahat Al Karama , wear opaque clothing that is not body-hugging, covers your shoulders and falls well below the knee. This is also the appropriate way to dress while visiting Al Ain or smaller towns in the Liwa Oasis.

At religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, both men and women who are not modestly dressed in loose, opaque clothing that covers their arms and legs are asked to wear a robe over their clothes (you can buy one from a nearby shop, if there are none to borrow). At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Abrahamic Family House , women will need a scarf to cover their heads.

To dine at a restaurant or visit a mall, dress as you would in any other city, keeping in mind that the locals are always well-groomed. Feel free to show off your style at nightclubs and bars that are located inside hotels.

For women, swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable at hotel swimming pools and public and private beaches. That being said, you’re more likely to see women in one-piece swimsuits and modest swimming attire on public beaches that aren’t located in expat-heavy residential areas. Female travelers might find it useful to carry a scarf or a shirt to cover their shoulders and arms if needed.

7. Respect privacy when photographing public spaces

While photographing sights around Abu Dhabi, pay attention to where your lens is pointed. Don’t take photos of people, especially women and children, without permission.

In the UAE, it’s illegal to photograph or take videos of people without their consent and share them on social media. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be arrested for taking a photo of an attraction where other people also appear, wait until they have moved out of the frame. Never attempt to zoom in and take portrait-style photos (of recognizable faces) without explicit consent.

8. Learn the local greeting and phrases

English is widely spoken but you’re likely to be greeted with the Emirati greeting “as salam alaykum” . Transcending the casual courtesy of an English “Hello”, it translates to “peace be upon you.” Responding with “walaykum as salam” and using “shukran”  (thank you) in Arabic will earn you the appreciation of locals.

9. Familiarize yourself with the rules of social interaction

When meeting an Emirati of the opposite sex, don’t reach out for a handshake. Wait for them to offer their hand first; it is likely that instead you will be greeted with a smile and them placing their right hand on their heart as a mark of respect – you should respond the same way.

Physical contact among members of the same sex is common, usually as handshakes (always with the right hand) when you’re getting acquainted. Emirati men may also greet each other with a nose-to-nose kiss or cheek-to-cheek kisses, with the latter also being common among Emirati women.

10. Be aware of the rules of non-verbal communication

In Emirati culture, non-verbal communication is important, so be conscious of your body language, especially in formal situations. Whether in a majlis , an Emirati home, or a government office, don’t sit with your knees crossed over each other, or with one leg resting on the other knee such that your foot is pointing at or your sole is facing someone – as both are insulting.

Pointing at someone with your index finger, beckoning with it, or wagging it while emphasizing your point is rude.

Use your right hand to accept or offer something, such as a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) or money, and to eat (the left hand is reserved for the toilet).

Rude gesturing (showing someone the middle finger) and hurling profanities is illegal and can lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation.

11. Behave appropriately during Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a time of prayer for Muslims who fast from dawn to sunset. For those not fasting, food and drinks are readily available during the day at restaurants and cafes in shopping malls, hotels and elsewhere.

The law requires that non-Muslim visitors only eat and drink (including water and chewing gum) at restaurants and designated spots (such as mall food courts) out of consideration for those fasting. Most non-fasting residents maintain discretion as a matter of social courtesy. You will not be arrested for sipping water outside on a hot day, but do your best to do so out of sight, and be ready to apologize if required.

Don’t blast loud music in public places – use headphones instead. Modest dressing in clothes that cover the shoulders and legs is appreciated.

12. Know the code of conduct at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an active place of worship where physical contact between visitors, even when posing for a photograph, is inappropriate. Don’t touch, hold hands or have an arm around your companion while having photos taken – security will approach you and ask you to delete the photo. You’re not allowed to gesture (so no victory signs or thumbs up). Don’t attempt to lie down on the exquisite carpet while taking photos inside the prayer halls.

13. Public displays of affection are frowned upon

Kissing, hugging and other public displays of affection are frowned upon, and prohibited at religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These days, holding hands does not raise eyebrows, but use your judgment according to the setting. It’s probably okay to do so in a shopping mall or at the beach, but not at the fish market or the Abrahamic Family House. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Abu Dhabi.

14. There is no tolerance for drunken behavior

In Abu Dhabi, alcohol is available at licensed restaurants and bars, and consumption of alcohol in unauthorized locations (such as a public beach) is illegal. While it's perfectly acceptable to have a good time, there is zero tolerance for rash, loud and aggressive behavior as a result of having had one too many. That means swearing, rude gestures, picking fights or causing a public nuisance are all illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines.

15. Don’t drink and drive, even over short distances

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime in the UAE and can result in imprisonment and fines upwards of Dhs20,000, should you find yourself in an accident. If you plan on drinking, leave the rental car behind and take a taxi instead.

16. Make note of emergency numbers

In case of emergencies and the need for rescue, evacuation or urgent medical assistance, contact Abu Dhabi Police on 999.

Kalba Mangrove - Sharjah

Dubai: If you are looking for travel choices that bring you closer to Nature and are easy on the pocket, the UAE has several options that you can consider. From mangroves to fossil dunes that are millions of years old, to discovering endangered species that are being rehabilitated in the UAE, here are all your options.

1. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve

The reserve is part of the larger Al Marmoom area and open to visitors. It houses the largest population of Arabian Oryx in Dubai. The area also has plenty of desert flora and fauna, which includes the Sand Gazelle (Reem in Arabic), Arabian Gazelle (Aldmani in Arabic) and a diverse range of bird and reptile species.

Dubai Municipality has built eight bird hides at the reserve for bird watching, which are mostly located near the lakes. You can view over 200 different migratory and local bird species that are present in Al Marmoom. If you want to catch a glimpse of the Arabian Oryx, there is an Oryx Platform, which is a viewing point near the Expo Lake in Al Marmoom.

Al Marmoom is only accessible by car, and you would need to do a little bit of off-roading if you wish to reach the popular spots like the Al Qudra lakes or the conservation reserve.

You can take any of the following roads in Dubai to get to the Al Marmoom desert area: 1. D63 Al Qudra Road – This road takes the visitors directly to the Al Qudra lakes. 2. 8. Soak in nature at Jubail Mangrove Park

When the weather cools, one of the most serene places to do explore nature in the capital is on Jubail Island.

Start at the Jubail Mangrove Park , where you can wander over the waterways via a winding boardwalk, with various trails to choose from depending on how long you want your walk to be. Keep an eye out for local birds, fish and animals as you wander, stopping at the park’s floating platform for a better view of life under the water.

There are specially trained rangers on hand to answer any questions you may have about this sprawling mangroves habitat and you can also hop on a kayak to see some of the more hidden sections of this million-square-metre area.

If all that fresh air whets your appetite for a nature-inspired sleepover, book a room at Pura Eco Retreat , Abu Dhabi's first eco-resort. Here you can spend the night in a nature-surrounded dome with unrestricted access to Abu Dhabi’s mangroves or if you're not looking for a staycation, book a table to enjoy dinner by the waterside.

9. Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque needs to be on every Abu Dhabi itinerary. Dominating the skyline as you approach the capital, it’s one of the world’s largest mosques and has an open-door policy encouraging visitors of all faiths to come and see inside, and gain a deeper understanding of the emirate’s cultural and religious beliefs.

The sprawling landmark can hold up to 55,000 people at a time, and hourly tours are free of charge. The mosque took 10 years to build and has 82 white marble domes, 1,096 amethyst-and-jasper-embedded columns, gold-plated Swarovski chandeliers and a courtyard featuring one of the largest marble mosaic artworks in the world.

10. Turn up the tempo on Yas Island

Crank up the action with a visit to Yas Island. Less than an hour from Dubai, this is the place to go for theme-park action in Abu Dhabi. If you’re coming for the weekend, the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is a great place to stay as guests get free theme-park tickets included with each booking.

Take your pick from world-class theme parks including Ferrari World Abu Dhabi , which is home to the world's fastest roller coaster, and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi which is made up of five lands – Metropolis; Gotham City; Cartoon Junction; Dynamite Gulch and Bedrock, all packed with rides, experiences, attractions and interactive games.

Spend a few nights on the island to really unwind; you'll have your choice of several five-star hotels including Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island, The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. All of the hotels have gorgeous swimming pools, private stretches of beach and some top-notch places to dine.

While you're there, keep your eyes peeled for hawksbill turtles that nest on the beaches at certain times of the year, and there have also been dolphins spotted off the coast.

12. Make a night of it at Coya Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi often gets a reputation for being quiet and more family-oriented. And while it certainly does tick both those boxes if that's what you're looking for, there's also plenty of upscale restaurants and decent nightspots if you're seeking a more grown-up affair.

If you're looking for something more active, there's several children’s play areas, cycle lanes and pedestrian pathways and free sports facilities, including five volleyball courts, two football pitches and three playing fields.

Rent a speedboat to see the Abu Dhabi skyline from the water or enjoy a bite to eat al fresco at the several cafes and restaurants dotted along the walkway. And if you walk to the very top of the Corniche you'll be at Emirates Palace , which is the place to go if you want to tick off sampling a gold-dusted cappuccino from your bucket list.

15. Savour the views from the Observation Deck At 300

While Dubai might be home to the world's tallest building, Abu Dhabi isn't afraid of heights, either. Observation Deck at 300, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers , is the city's highest building. Perched 282 metres above the city, the glass-fronted restaurant is on the 74th floor of the hotel and offers amazing views of the capital with vistas over the Arabian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace.

Telescopes are available for zeroing in on any specific parts of the view you want to see in more detail, and if you time your visit for sunset, you're in for a treat. If tiny sandwiches, delicate cakes and hot-toasted scones are something you enjoy, the afternoon tea allows visitors to drink in the city views alongside a freshly brewed cuppa and a tiered platter of treats.

Abu Dhabi has emerged as the fastest-growing emerging ecosystem in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, achieving a 28 per cent growth in ecosystem value, according to the 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report ( GSER ) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network.

The report, launched during London Tech Week, highlighted the rapid development of the emirate’s startup landscape, driven by significant activity at Hub71, the city’s global technology ecosystem.

GSER 2024, renowned for its quality-controlled dataset on startup ecosystems, analysed over 4.5 million companies across more than 300 entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems.

The report ranks the top 40 global ecosystems and emerging ecosystems while providing deep insights into startup trends worldwide.

Abu Dhabi: Performance highlights

The emirate’s ecosystem value soared to $4.2bn between July 2021 and December 2023, marking a 28 per cent compound annual growth compared to the previous two-year period.

The capital’s ranking improved by 15 spots from the previous year, placing it in the 61-70 group. Total early-stage funding during this period amounted to $284m, while total venture capital funding from 2019 to 2023 reached $1.06bn.

Additionally, the GSER recognised the emirate’s achievements in various categories within the MENA region. It ranked…

  • Second in performance: Measuring the ecosystem’s size and performance based on accumulated tech startup value
  • Fifth in funding: Assessing innovation through early-stage funding and investor activity
  • Fifth in talent and experience: Evaluating long-term trends in performance factors
  • Among the top 10 in knowledge: Focusing on innovation through research and patent activity
  • Among the top 15 in ‘bang for the buck’: Measuring the runway tech startups acquire from a VC round
  • Among the top 15 in affordable talent: Assessing the ability to hire tech talent

The report also highlighted the emirate’s strengths in the fintech, agtech and new food, and climate tech sectors, citing the density of talent, support resources, and startup activity.

The emirate’s strategic location and Golden Visa programme were highlighted as significant factors attracting startups.

Hub71 and other government bodies praised

Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71, emphasised the emirate’s conducive environment for startups: “Abu Dhabi’s rise as a leading startup ecosystem in the region is a testament to the opportunities it offers entrepreneurs worldwide. Its favourable environment creates funding and commercial prospects and establishes the foundation for startups to scale. This is exemplified through Hub71 which has seen its startup community grow over the past five years as more startups identify Abu Dhabi as a launchpad for their global expansion.”

The report credited key ecosystem players, including Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), Mubadala Investment Company, ADQ, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), startAD and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), for fostering a supportive regulatory and operational environment.

Incentives such as 100 per cent foreign ownership have attracted significant foreign investment and numerous global headquarters to Abu Dhabi.

Marc Penzel, founder and president of Startup Genome , remarked: “Thanks to the excellent work of Hub71 , Abu Dhabi is one of the rare places where everyone comes together to create a world-class startup ecosystem at an incredible pace. Whether it’s digital assets, cleantech, or other fast-growing opportunities, Abu Dhabi should be on the radar of any entrepreneur with outsized global ambitions.”

Abu Dhabi has ranked as the fastest-growing emerging ecosystem in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, marking a 28 per cent growth in ecosystem value in the 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network, launched during London Tech Week.

GSER, which uses the world’s most quality-controlled dataset on startup ecosystems, analyses data from more than 4.5 million companies across more than 300 entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems. It provides compelling new insights and deep knowledge about startup trends around the world and ranks the Top 40 global ecosystems, emerging ecosystems, and an expanded regional ranking.

As part of Startup Genome’s analysis of the UAE’s capital city, including the growing startup activity at Hub71 , Abu Dhabi’s global technology ecosystem, GSER 2024 found that Abu Dhabi continues to be the fastest-growing emerging ecosystem in the MENA region. The ecosystem created $4.2 billion in Ecosystem Value from 1 July 2021 to 31 December 2023, representing 28 per cent compound annual growth compared to 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2021 period. Ecosystem Value is a measure of economic impact, calculated as the value of exits and startup valuations.

Abu Dhabi’s ranking jumped 15 spots compared to the previous year, landing in the 61-70 group and Total Early-Stage Funding between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2023 is $284 million and total VC Funding for 2019-2023 is $1.06 billion.

In addition, Abu Dhabi was ranked #2 in the MENA Ecosystem in Performance, which measures the size and performance of an ecosystem based on the accumulated tech startup value created from exits and funding, #5 in the MENA Ecosystem in Funding, which measures innovation through early-stage funding and investor’s activity, and #5 in the MENA Ecosystem in Talent & Experience, which measures long-term trends over the most significant performance factors.

Other ranks attained by the emirate include posting within the Top 10 MENA Ecosystem in Knowledge, which measures innovation through research and patent activity, within the Top 15 MENA Ecosystem in Bang for Buck, which measures the amount of runway tech startups acquire, on average, from a VC round, within the Top 15 MENA Ecosystem in Affordable Talent, which measures the ability to hire tech talent, as well as being highlighted in the FinTech, AgTech and New Food, and ClimateTech sectors for their density of talent, support resources, and startup activity. Also spotlighted were the Golden Visa and Abu Dhabi’s strategic location, which were cited as reasons a startup should move to the ecosystem.

Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71, said: “Abu Dhabi’s rise as a leading startup ecosystem in the region is a testament to the opportunities it offers entrepreneurs worldwide. Its favorable environment creates the funding and commercial prospects and establishes the foundation for startups to scale. This is exemplified through Hub71 which has seen its startup community grow over the past five years as more startups identify Abu Dhabi as a launchpad for their global expansion. As the Startup Genome report shows, Hub71 is fulfilling the vision of our leadership to maximize the potential of disruptive ventures that are transforming society with impact.”

The report highlights Abu Dhabi’s key ecosystem players including Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) , Mubadala Investment Company , ADQ , the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) , startAD, and Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) , which are contributing to a favorable operating and regulatory environment and offering unique incentives, such as 100 per cent foreign ownership to attract foreign investment and startups into the economy. Leveraging collaborations among these key ecosystem players, Abu Dhabi is facilitating the soft-landing of startups from around the world, enabling access to capital and commercial opportunities. Numerous companies are relocating their global headquarters to ADGM, among them US-based digital asset security firm Andalusia Labs and South Korean blockchain company Neoply. Hub71 hosts a community of more than 315 startups that have collectively raised $1.5 billion.

Marc Penzel, Founder and President of Startup Genome, said: "Thanks to the excellent work of Hub71, Abu Dhabi is one of the rare places where everyone comes together to create a world-class startup ecosystem at an incredible pace. Whether it's digital assets, CleanTech, or other fast-growing opportunities, Abu Dhabi should be on the radar of any entrepreneur with outsized global ambitions."

GSER is driven by a consortium of representatives from more than 40 countries and looks at the current state of startup activity and related investment, providing insights and guidance to public and private leaders on how to foster thriving startup communities, the number one driver of job creation and economic growth. Contributions from expert thought leaders and local key players further enrich the report's extensive, evidence-based findings, which are the product of more than a decade of Startup Genome's independent research and policy work.
