Norwegian fjords

Oslo - bergen, dates: 13/07/2024 to  20/07/2024.

Guest Speaker

This is where nature has shaped its most majestic masterpieces… Majestic fjords bordered by monumental cliffs cutting into the coastline of the North Sea, legendary lands featuring fascinating fauna, vertiginous waterfalls tumbling from immense rock walls. Norway will open its doors to you for a unique 8-day journey from Oslo to Bergen, through these ancestral lands, home to myths, conquest and geological wonders.

The Norwegian capital grows distant. Its ochre brick buildings disappear, giving way to the spellbinding setting of Oslfjorden, featuring lush green islands scattered with hundred-year-old oaks, herbaceous shorelines and red wooden houses.

After a port of call in the charming historic Swedish city of Göteborg , you will set sail again for the historic and wild southern tip of Norway. In Arendal , once known as the Venice of the North because of its many canals, you may take the time to contemplate this intact and preserved immense space, composed of conifer forests and long pebble beaches; these bear testimony to the retreat of a huge glacier, around 12,000 years ago, which left an enormous amount of rock behind. Then, in Stavanger , plunge into the fantastic universe of the legendary and emblematic Vikings, who were explorers and traders but also pirates. Here, an immersion into the Iron Age awaits; you will discover the ancestral traditions of these larger-than-life characters as you visit a reconstructed traditional village or emblematic sites.

The fjords region , the highlight of your odyssey, is approaching. Beneath a misty sky, you will see the imposing dark rock walls of these natural wonders, whose calm waters were explored by Viking drakkars almost ten centuries ago. These geological treasures will immerse you in a universe that is as inhospitable as it is captivating. Lysefjorden and its mythical Preikestolen , a majestic pulpit-shaped cliff: these all offer a unique, stunning and unforgettable experience; Nordfjordeid with its Viking relics, Geiranger with its legendary fjord, the only one of its kind to be listed by UNESCO, Hellesylt with its impressive cliffs and waterfalls: all offer a unique, breathtaking and unforgettable experience.

During a final port of call, you will be able to visit Alesund Fall in love with the Art Nouveau architecture of this historic city, which is surrounded by a ring of rocky islets, enchanting fjord inlets and majestic mountains. It lies anchored opposite Giske, the home island of Rollo, the great Viking chieftain renowned for his many Nordic expeditions to Normandy.

As a grand finale, this enchanting interlude will come to an end in Bergen , founded by the Vikings almost a thousand years ago and famous for its seven mountains overlooking the city centre and its Hanseatic wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For culture, the national gallery shelters the largest Norwegian collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures open to the public. Authentic and welcoming, this city of canals, edged with many green spaces, has a rich maritime history, making it Sweden’s most important port. Going beyond its commercial influence, “the cultural capital of Scandinavia” is a perfect blend of historic monuments, neo-classical architecture and eco-districts featuring modern urban spaces. In the old Haga district, you can peruse hippy-chic fashion boutiques and bohemian cafés in the ground floors of traditional wood houses. On the hills of the city, fall under the spell of the Lutheran Masthugget Church, a sumptuous 18th-century building.

A port city located on Norway’s southern coast, Arendal is considered as the municipality enjoying the best climate in the country. This town in the Sorlandet region has also long been renowned for its iron ore mines: their operation in the 19th century produced a particularly resistant magnetite ore. The Raet National Park, the only protected area on the eastern coast of Norway, is not far away; here, you will fall in love with its raw nature, with silver and emerald reflections, dotted with immense coniferous forests and long pebble beaches.

At the far end of the country, stands the harbour town of Stavanger , with its warm, friendly atmosphere. A friendliness you’ll notice in the little old town cobbled streets, which has some 170 old wooden houses, as well as in its modern city centre, always bustling. Strategic place during the Viking era, you will be able to discover a recreated traditional village as well as the famous Swords in Rock, three granite swords standing 10 metres (33 ft) tall, symbolising the last victory of the King of Norway Harald I, in 872.

16 July 2024 - Sailing in Lysefjorden

Arrival 16/07/2024 Departure 16/07/2024

Very close to Stavanger, the quiet waters of Lysefjorden stretch out over around forty kilometres, beneath impressive rocks. Admire the world-famous site of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), a majestic cliff in the shape of a pulpit that rises to more than 600 metres above the waters. A bit further on, Flørli , from the top of its 4,444 steps, is the world’s longest wooden stairway, whereas the Kjerag, with its mythical boulder wedged between two rock faces, provides an unusual and unforgettable spectacle.

Nordfjordeid

17 July 2024 - Nordfjordeid

Arrival 17/07/2024 midday Departure 17/07/2024 evening

Nordfjordeid is a small town lying south of Alesund, nestling in one of the arms of the Nordfjorden and its wild and magnificent shores. Between valleys with abundant vegetation and mountainous terrain, nature here offers a 360-degree view which was conducive to the early settlement of Viking communities, judging by the large number of tombs, among the country’s largest and richest. You may get to deepen your knowledge of the Nordic culture and traditions at Sagastad , a surprising museum with interactive exhibitions and home, among other sights, to the Myklebust , one of the world’s largest Viking ships, measuring 30 metres (98 feet) in length.

Surrounded by a multitude of islands, fjords and majestic mountains, the town of Ålesund surprises many visitors. In fact, it is internationally renowned for its Art nouveau architecture . After the terrible fire of 1904 which reduced a large part of the town to ashes, Norwegian architects inspired by the Art nouveau style contributed to its reconstruction, with a very picturesque result. Not far from Ålesund, you will also discover Giske , the native island of Rollon, the great Viking leader who commanded the Norse expeditions to Normandy, or the beautiful island of Godoy and the village of Alnes, which offers a grandiose panorama over the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding islands.

Arrival 20/07/2024 early morning Disembarkation 20/07/2024 at 08:00

Located at the end of Byfjord , Bergen was the capital of Norway in the 12th and 13th Centuries and has preserved some very beautiful monuments from the time when it was home to royalty. Wandering through Bergen’s streets means going back in time, in search of the hidden treasures that have been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO . A veritable openair museum, Bergen is home to a thriving artistic community of painters, potters, jewellers. The Bergen cable car offers you a splendid panorama over the port and the surrounding fjords. Do not miss the visit to the old quarter with its narrow streets, a testimony of the power of the hanseatic League that controlled trade in Northern Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.

In the footsteps of Stavanger's past

In the footsteps of Stavanger's past

Stavanger and its surroundings have played a leading role in Norway's maritime history for centuries, from the time when the Viking kings battled in Hafrsfjord, through to the period of the “white sails”, the steamships and to today's modern super tankers.

From the pier, drive passing rich agricultural countryside before arriving at Ullandhaug, with its reconstructed farmhouses from the Iron Age and an introduction into life during that time. In one of the low houses with turf roof, learn more about the living conditions around the year 500. Learn how Norwegians lived their life at this time - a local guide will demonstrate how they made flour or wove their clothes.

After the visit, re-board you coach and drive toward a viewpoint nearby Ullandhaug hill, and enjoy a magnificent view over Hafrsfjord , where the Viking king Harald Haarfagre (the Fair-haired) defeated in 872 the last of the regional princes, and founded the Kingdom of Norway by uniting the 29 small kingdoms under one crown.

Here you will have a photo stop at the Sword in Rock , a monument made of three Viking swords more than 29 feet (9 m) high forced into the ground, recently raised to commemorate this event.

To the east, the fertile farmland of Jæren with the Ryfylke Mountains forms the background. Before your return to the ship, you will have the option of strolling through Old Stavanger and the charming, picturesque and well preserved wooden houses in narrow lanes, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The houses were originally built for seamen, craftsmen and businessmen. Old Stavanger is today considered unique and its rehabilitation and conservation is the city's most important project.

  • This tour involves walking on muddy paths and some inclines at the Iron Age Farm. We recommend you to wear comfortable walking shoes. Should you choose to visit Old Stavanger at the end of the tour, you will return to your ship independently.

Utstein Monastery & music recital

Utstein Monastery & music recital

Utstein Monastery is situated on Mosteroy Island. Up to 1992, going to Mosteroy Island had to be done by boat. Today, the drive is via an underwater tunnel almost 3 miles (5 km) long that goes down to nearly 700 feet (210 m).

On Mosteroy Island, the land is fertile and peaceful with grazing sheep and cows. Wonderful green colours, in all the splendid shades which only soft sea air can create, surround you on your way to Utstein Monastery, the best-preserved monastery built in Norway, and you can easily understand why the Viking kings chose to settle here.

From the 13th century onwards, Augustine monks lived here in the peaceful countryside. The Reformation in 1537 put an end to monastery life, and the king's vassals took over the property. In 1937, Restoration works began that ended in 1965.

After the guided visit, the tour ends with a short music recital in the chapel (15 to 20 minutes). One cannot but feel the peace in these surroundings. The old beeches are still standing in the garden, spreading their great crowns over the group of old buildings.

After the visit and recital, return to the pier and your ship in Stavanger via the same route.

  • This tour involves approximately 25 steps to negotiate at the monastery.

Nordfjordeid walk & Sagastad

Nordfjordeid walk & Sagastad

Walk past Malakoff , the old military camp which is now used to host an annual rock festival for the past 20 years for up to thirty thousand people. Pass several memory stones where the locals pay their respect to the soldiers who died in the different wars. Especially the statue «Sørgande Mor», by Dyre Vaa, the grieving mother, depicting the mothers` loss due to a war.

Continue and discover other sites of interest during your stroll such as the old wooden houses with green gardens in between, the church of Eid , the Opera House . While on the walk, you will be treated with a local cinnamon bun and a cup of coffee or tea.

Then, reach Sagastad and the Myklebust Viking Ship , Norway’s largest viking ship that had ever been found has been reconstructed. The ship is exhibited in the Sagastad Visitor Centre where the ship was found. There is a digital and a physical exhibition about the Vikings, the findings and boat building traditions.

  • This excursion involves walking approximately 2 ½ hours on mostly flat ground. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and a windproof jacket.

A fantastic spectacle awaits as you enter a world of naked rock, ice and snow. Your route continues on up Mount Dalsnibba to a height of 4,930 feet (1,495 m) from where you will have an exceptional view (weather permitting). At this altitude, all the snow-capped peaks cast light on a scene that appears inaccessible.

You will then take a break for lunch in local restaurant. After lunch, you will head to the summer ski resort of Tystigen to capture the stunning panorama. Drive along the shores of Lake Stryn, the emerald-green colour of which is so typical of the area, due to the melting Jostedalen glacier that you will see further on. Giske & Godoy islands

Giske & Godoy islands

From the pier, you will start the tour with a short panoramic city tour through the Art Nouveau district of Alesund. The city's architectural character is in fact the result of a catastrophe - the great fire in 1904 and those young architects who participated in the rebuilding of the city were inspired by the Art Nouveau style.

Then you will drive up to Mount Aksla from where you have a beautiful view of the city, the islands and the Sunnmore Mountains.

Leaving the city you will drive through some of the world's largest undersea tunnels connecting the islands with the mainland. Today the approximately 6,300 inhabitants have a 'ferry-free connection' with the rest of Norway. To reach the islands you must traverse bridges and undersea tunnels, the longest being 2.5 miles. Reach Giske Island , which had a unique position during the Viking period.

The famous Gange - Rolv, or Rollo, was born on Giske. This great warrior conquered Normandie in 911 and became the ancestor of William the Conqueror, sire to the English Royal Family. The old marble church at Giske was built as a family chapel for one of most powerful families. The church is built in the Norman style and is a typical product of the architecture prior to 1200. In 1756 the church was restored. The local artist Jacob S. Giskegaard created the new interior including a new pulpit, and a new alter piece.

Continue your visit proceeding to Godoy Island and Alnes village located on the seaside. You will see a typical fishing village with a well-preserved and picturesque architecture. Its main attraction is its lighthouse . You will get the opportunity to climb up its stairs (87 steps) to enjoy a beautiful look-out to the Atlantic Ocean and the surroundings islands.

After this visit, you will return to your ship.

  • For this excursion, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes. Appropriate dress is recommended to enter religious sites (shoulders and knees must be covered). Please note the church may be visited from exterior only due to ecumenical services.

City walk & Art Nouveau museum

City walk & Art Nouveau museum

Ålesund, the largest town on the northwest coast of Norway, has a spectacular setting: stretching over three islands, near the ocean and backdropped by impressive mountain-peaks. The town centre was destroyed by a fire in 1904, but rebuilt shortly after in the characteristic Art Nouveau architectural style of the period. Today Ålesund has a population of approximately 40,000, but the town centre is relatively small and easy to cover on foot.

From the pier, you will start on foot with a visit to the Art Nouveau museum , located in the old pharmacy building. The museum provides interesting insight into the fire of 1904 and the creative Art Nouveau period.

After your visit, you will continue your walking tour. Your guide will put particular emphasis on presenting the importance of fisheries in Norway's biggest fish export harbour and, of course, you will be shown a multitude of examples of the picturesque Art Nouveau style that has made Ålesund famous.

The tour will continue uphill to the quaint little park at the foot of mount Aksla . Here, you will find exotic trees and plants as well as a memorial stone dedicated to the German emperor Wilhelm II, for whom the main street in town is named after. Furthermore, you will see the statue of the Viking "Gange-Rolf" who sailed from Ålesund to what is today Normandy (France), named after the Norwegian settlers. From the park, you could choose to continue to ascend mount Aksla, where your will be rewarded for your efforts with a spectacular view . Or you could wander about in the park or just sit and have a rest before the return to the pier and your ship.

  • This tour involves approximately 2 miles (3 km) of walking over even, paved and cobblestone surfaces with inclines. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the rain. This tour will operate in all weather conditions. A parent must accompany children under the age of 16. The tour is limited to 50 participants.

Alesund by e-bike

Alesund by e-bike

Don your helmet, hop on your e-bike, and set off to discover hand-picked highlights in this enchanting city!

E-biking is just like traditional cycling, but with less pedaling thanks to the bike’s electric motor. After a full briefing, your guide will lead the way as you cruise into the streets. Glide around the heart of colorful Alesund , which is renowned for its unique Art Nouveau style. Hear the story of the fire that destroyed the town in 1904 and admire the intricate façades of the buildings that rose from the ashes, embellished with dragons and flowers, and crowned by a forest of spires and turrets. Make the most of your bike’s motor and head up to a viewpoint on Mount Aksla . From here, soak up a breathtaking vista spanning Ålesund, the surrounding mountains, the sparkling fjords, and the distant Sunnmore Alps.

  • An e-bike and helmet will be provided. Participants are required to have previously ridden a normal bicycle. The excursion involves 2 ½-hour cycling. Participants must be at least 4’9” tall (150 cm) and weigh under 242 pounds (110 kgs). Pregnant women, those with back problems, and children under age 12 are not permitted. We recommend you wear a wind/waterproof jacket, flat shoes, and sunglasses.

Day 4 – Oslo

Breakfast at the hotel and morning at leisure, followed by check-out.

King Harald the Hardruler founded Oslo 1050 A.D. In the year 1624 the town was destroyed by fire and the Danish/Norwegian king at the time, Christian IV, decided to rebuild the city under the walls of the fortress of Akershus dating back to 1299.  He named the new town “Christiania”, a name that was used right up to the year 1925 when it was decided to take back the original name “Oslo” which means the estuary of the river Lo.

Start your Oslo journey with a lunch in a local restaurant, perfectly located in Norway capital city. After lunch, your guide will lead you by foot through the past historical buildings as the City Hall with its two impressive towers, which stood ready for the city’s 900 years’ jubilee in 1950. Norway's most distinguished artists contributed to the decorations of this modern landmark.

You will also discover the National Theatre with the statues of the writers Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnson in front. Then, you will pass the Royal palace that Karl Johan built and head up the main street “Karl Johan” named after King Karl Johan Bernadotte, the king of Sweden/Norway in the first half of the 19th century. At the far end the original University buildings from 1913 and Parliament “Stortinget”.

Finally, you will walk to Oslo’s newest building completed in 2008 – the Opera House. You will experience the award-winning modern architecture and take a walk on the harbour.

The tour will end at the pier for embarkation.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

5 of the best fjord cruises from Bergen

Set among majestic mountains and home to colourful wooden houses, Bergen is the gateway to Norway’s breathtaking fjords.

The town of Balestrand can be visited on a full-day cruise of the Sognefjord

The city itself is charming, but it’s taking a cruise that really lets you see the nearby fjords in all their grandeur.

Prepare to be captivated by cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs and serene glacial landscapes, all while cruising through clear turquoise waters.

Taking a fjord cruise from Bergen is honestly a pretty extraordinary experience that will leave you in awe of nature’s wonders. But what kind of trips are available, and how do you get started?

Quick take: our 3 favourite cruises

  • See Bergen’s famous waterfront from a Viking-style ship on this tour
  • Take an epic cruise to the pretty village of Flåm , and then the train to Oslo
  • Get up close and personal with a huge waterfall on this fun cruise

Why start in Bergen?

Fjord cruises offer a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate some of Norway’s prettiest fjords.

But what makes Bergen the ideal starting point for your fjord cruise?

Bergen is a beautiful town from which to start your fjord cruise

Well, the location is important. Situated on the southwestern coast, close to some of the best fjords in Norway, Bergen is THE hub for organised fjord cruises.

These fjord cruises have gained tremendous popularity among tourists, especially those visiting from abroad, and lots of restaurants and hotels have sprung up to cater to their needs.

Not only that but the city offers a treasure trove of cultural and historical attractions to explore before or after your cruise. You can stroll through the Unesco-listed Bryggen Wharf, with its vibrant Hanseatic buildings that tell stories of the past, or visit the lively fish market for a taste of local flavours.

And don’t miss the chance to take a funicular ride up to Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes.

For more on what to do in Bergen, read our Bergen guides .

The Geirangerfjord is often cited as Norway's most beautiful fjord.

Which fjords can you visit from Bergen?

These are the main fjords that you can visit on a fjord cruise from Bergen:

  • Sognefjord : Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord is home to majestic cliffs, tranquil waters and charming villages like Flåm and Balestrand. (Flåm can also be visited on this epic train trip ).
  • Hardangerfjord : With its orchards, waterfalls and the famous Trolltunga rock formation , Hardangerfjord is a well-known fjord that presents a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
  • Geirangerfjord : A Unesco World Heritage Site, Geirangerfjord boasts dramatic mountain peaks, waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters and the Bridal Veil, and the charming village of Geiranger. It is often considered one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.
  • Nærøyfjord : Another Unesco World Heritage Site, Nærøyfjord is a narrow fjord renowned for its steep cliffs and pristine natural surroundings.

Which cruise should you join?

First, decide on the duration of the cruise to fit your schedule and preferences.

Also consider the size of the vessel, as smaller ships often provide more intimate rides, and think about which kinds of things you want to see on the trip. Some cruises only take a quick tour around one fjord before returning to base, while longer ones allow you time to stop and explore.

You should definitely take into account the time of year, as the landscapes and weather conditions vary hugely from season to season. Summer (May to early September) is really the best time. There’s never any guarantee of sunshine in Bergen, but at least there is plenty of daylight.

For more on the fjords and which ones to visit, read our guide to the 16 best fjords in Norway .

Highlights Cruise serenely along tranquil lakes, and embrace their cool and peaceful ambiance. Be amazed by the grandeur of the steep cliffs, majestic mountains and vast open natural landscapes that unfold before your eyes.

What to expect on a fjord cruise from Bergen

It’s pretty simple! Most day cruises leave from the one of the piers along the central harbour in Bergen.

See Bergen's Bryggen Wharf on a fjord cruise.

Once you’re on board, prepare for a captivating opportunity as you sail through iconic fjords like Sognefjord or Hardangerfjord.

Cruises typically take a few hours, though some last a full day, providing ample time to take in the majestic landscapes and savour the views.

Some cruise boats also have a rooftop deck, onboard dining and wildlife viewing opportunities, so check the description before booking to ensure your preferences align with the offerings.

Top tips for a fjord cruise from Bergen

And finally, for a smooth and enjoyable fjord cruise experience, here are some practical tips to bear in mind:

  • Bring layered clothing, including a waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes for walking, and sunscreen.
  • Don’t forget your phone or camera to make sure you capture the best pics of the stunning landscapes on your Norway cruise .
  • The best time to go on a fjord cruise is during the summer months of June to August when the weather is milder and daylight hours are longer. However, be prepared for crowds during peak tourist season.
  • Book in advance! Fjord cruises can be popular, so book your tickets in advance to make sure you get on the cruise you want.
  • It sounds obvious but if you’re prone to sea-sickness, bring sea-sickness tablets!
  • Follow safety guidelines. This means listening to the crew’s instructions, staying within designated areas, and being careful when near the edges of the boat.

My First Trip to Norway, With A.I. as a Guide

Can artificial intelligence devise a bucket-list vacation that checks all the boxes: culture, nature, hotels and transportation? Our reporter put three virtual assistants to the test.

A train rolls past a small, quaint red wooden building with a quiet road in front of it. In the distance are trees and snow-capped mountains.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

The assignment was clear: Test how well artificial intelligence could plan a trip to Norway, a place I’d never been. So I did none of my usual obsessive online research and instead asked three A.I. planners to create a four-day itinerary. None of them, alas, mentioned the saunas or the salmon.

Two assistants were, however, eager to learn more about me in order to tailor their initially generic recommendations, which they had spewed out within seconds. Vacay , a personalized travel planning tool, presented me with a list of questions, while Mindtrip , a new A.I. travel assistant, invited me to take a quiz. (ChatGPT, the third assistant, asked nothing.)

Vacay’s and Mindtrip’s questions were similar: Are you traveling solo? What’s your budget? Do you prefer hotels or Airbnbs? Would you rather explore the great outdoors or pursue a cultural experience?

Eventually, my chat sessions yielded what seemed like well-rounded itineraries, starting with one day in Oslo and moving on to the fjord region. Eventually, I locked down a trip that would combine the assistants’ information and go beyond a predictable list of sites.

This time around, my virtual planners were far more sophisticated than the simple ChatGPT interface I used last year on a trip to Milan. Though it offered more detailed suggestions for Norway, I ended up ditching ChatGPT in the travel-planning stage after it repeatedly crashed.

Vacay’s premium service, which starts at $9.99 per month, included in-depth suggestions and booking links, while Mindtrip, which is currently free, provided photos, Google reviews and maps. During the trip itself, each delivered instantaneous information by text and always asked if more specific details were needed. Sadly, only ChatGPT offered a phone app, whose information I found to be outdated (the $20-per-month premium version is more current).

I’m not alone when it comes to turning to A.I. for help: Around 70 percent of Americans are either using or planning to use A.I. for travel planning, according to a recent survey conducted by the Harris Poll on behalf of the personal finance app Moneylion, while 71 percent said using A.I. would most likely be easier than planning trips on one’s own.

I decided to find out for myself in Norway.

A whirlwind day in Oslo

After I landed at Oslo Airport, all three assistants directed me to the Flytoget Airport Express Train , which got me to town in 20 minutes. I was delighted to find my hotel adjacent to the central railway station.

Choosing accommodations had not been easy. I was looking for a midrange boutique hotel, and the A.I. assistants generated many options with little overlap. I went with Hotel Amerikalinjen , Vacay’s recommendation, which it described as “a vibrant and unique boutique hotel in the heart of Oslo.” Its location was the main draw, but overall the hotel exceeded my expectations, blending comfort and style with the 20th-century charm of its building, which once housed the headquarters of the Norwegian America Line shipping company.

For the one-day Oslo itinerary, the assistants were in agreement, packing in the city’s top sights, including the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Royal Palace , the Nobel Peace Center, Akershus Fortress and the Munch Museum. I shared my location and asked each assistant to restructure the itineraries to start from my hotel. But when I gave in to my own research instincts and pulled up Google Maps, I saw that the order they suggested didn’t make sense, so I plotted my own path.

By the time I got to Frogner Park at midday, I had already covered half of the sights, and after walking past more than 200 sculptures by the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, I was happy to sit down and admire his granite monolith of entwined humans.

For lunch, the assistants recommended high-end restaurants in the bustling waterfront neighborhood of Aker Brygge . But I wanted a quick bite in a more relaxed atmosphere, so I ditched A.I. and walked to the end of the promenade, where I stumbled upon the Salmon , a cozy establishment where I started with salmon sashimi that melted in my mouth and finished with a perfectly grilled fillet. How had my assistants not mentioned this place?

Next on my list was the Nobel Peace Center, the Opera House and the Munch Museum. The assistants had not recommended prebooking tickets, but fortunately, I had done so, learning, in the process, that the Peace Center was closed, a crucial bit of information that A.I. did not relay.

It was chilly for mid-June, and as I walked along the harbor promenade toward the Munch Museum, I spotted small floating saunas, which my assistants had not included. I went back to the ChatGPT phone app for recommendations. Even though I was eager to try a floating sauna, where people warmed themselves and then plunged straight into the frigid waters of the Oslofjord, I took ChatGPT’s suggestion and booked the Salt sauna, which is where I headed after spending a few hours at the Munch Museum, with its extensive works by the Norwegian artist and its sweeping views of Oslo’s harbor.

At the Salt cultural complex , a large pyramidal structure on the water, I was relieved that swimsuits were a requirement. In Scandinavia, saunas are usually taken naked , and earlier, I had asked ChatGPT for the etiquette at Salt, but it failed to give me a definitive answer. After sweating it out with around 30 strangers in Salt’s main sauna, I dipped into a cold-water barrel tub and then tried the smaller sauna options, which were hotter and quieter. It was the perfect ending to a long day.

Waterfalls, lush valleys, raging waters

oslo bergen cruise

Each of my assistants had different ideas on how to reach the fjord region. ChatGPT suggested taking a seven-hour train ride and then immediately embarking on a two-hour fjord cruise, which sounded exhausting. Mindtrip suggested taking a short flight to Bergen, known as the “gateway to the fjords,” and setting out on a cruise the next day, which was perhaps more efficient, but would also mean missing one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Vacay also recommended a train ride.

After conversing with the assistants, I decided on a shorter train journey (six hours) that would deliver me to Naeroyfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage site with lush valleys and thundering waterfalls. But to figure out the logistics for transport and accommodation, I needed live train timetables, which I found on my own, and information on hotel availability that none of the assistants had.

At this point, I was desperate for human guidance to navigate the region’s expensive and limited accommodations. This is where the pictures and reviews on Mindtrip were useful, helping me to understand that I would be paying premium prices for the spectacular setting of a mediocre hotel.

The train ride from Oslo to Myrdal was breathtaking: rolling hills, mountain villages, fjords, waterfalls. But nothing prepared me for the majestic one-hour Flam railway ride that followed. Vacay had described it as an “engineering marvel” with a breathtakingly steep descent as it passes picturesque villages, dramatic mountains, raging rivers and pounding waterfalls, complete with a dance performance featuring a mythological spirit known as a huldra.

The next morning I boarded a Naeroyfjord cruise, recommended by Vacay, on an electric, 400-person vessel. I was surprised by the serenity of the fjord. Later I learned from a tour guide that I had been lucky to visit when there were no large cruise ships. It was hard to imagine an ocean liner maneuvering through the narrow, windy fjord, but when I asked ChatGPT, it told me 150 to 220 cruise ships squeezed through the fjord each year, a detail that I felt the travel assistants should warn travelers about.

The cruise ended in the village of Gudvangen, where rain made me cancel a hike to a waterfall and instead try my hand at ax-throwing in the Viking Village Njardarheim. The assistants had told me that there were buses that left town every four hours, a time frame that had worked with my original hiking plan, but now I was stuck. Thankfully, I took note of the A.I. disclaimers to check all information and found an alternative shuttle bus.

On my way to Bergen, I decided to stop in the town of Voss, famous for extreme sports like skydiving and spectacular nature. All the A.I.-suggested hotels were booked, but a Google search led me to the lakeside Elva hotel , which had delicious farm-to-table food. I suspect it didn’t make the A.I. shortlist because it was new.

I ended my trip in Bergen, which, despite being Norway’s second-largest city, maintains a small-town charm with its colorful wooden houses and cobblestone streets. With only half a day to explore, I followed Mindtrip’s short itinerary, starting with a hearty lunch of fish and chips at the bustling waterfront fish market and ending with a funicular ride up Mount Floyen for panoramic views of the city and fjords. The A.I. dinner suggestion at the Colonialen was perfect: cozy vibe, live jazz and locally sourced dishes.

The bottom line

None of the A.I. programs were perfect, but they did complement one another, allowing me to streamline my travel decisions.

Overall, Mindtrip — with its polished, dynamic interface that allowed me to cross-check details with maps, links and reviews — was my favorite. While it gave some good recommendations, Mindtrip needed more prompting than Vacay, which offered a wider variety of suggestions in more detail. Unfortunately, Vacay doesn’t save chat history, which I discovered halfway into my planning after closing the website’s tab on my browser.

The biggest drawback was the absence of phone apps for Mindtrip and Vacay, which led me to rely on ChatGPT’s basic A.I. assistant when I needed on-the-spot guidance. Mindtrip, I’ve since learned, is planning to debut an app in September.

Still, there were times when I desperately craved the human touch. Before setting out on a trip, I always contact friends and colleagues for recommendations. This time, as part of the A.I. experiment, I refrained from reaching out to a Norwegian friend until after my trip, only to find out that we had both been in Oslo at the same time.

That’s one element of travel that I doubt A.I. will ever master: serendipity.

Welcome to Norway

It’s only fitting that your Norwegian adventure begins in Bergen, Norway’s cultural and artistic hotspot. Your hotel is located in the heart of the city with the rest of the day or evening spent at your leisure exploring Norway’s second-largest city.

In many ways, Bergen is like a medieval living museum. Founded by King Olaf III in 1070 AD, Bergen was Norway’s capital for many years. As you wander its cobblestone streets and alleyways, you’ll note how this bustling city has lost none of its heritage and historic charm.

Depending on how much time you have, you can take a funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen. At the summit, you’ll be able to take in spectacular views of Bergen, its neighbouring fjords and surrounding mountains.

For dinner, what better place to go than the fish market in the city centre? There, various indoor stalls cook fresh seafood on the spot for you, filling the air with appetite-arousing aromas.

Exploring Norway’s cultural hub

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll go on a guided sightseeing tour of Bergen. Enjoy visiting well-known sites such as Nordnes peninsula, medieval Håkon’s Hall, the Renaissance-era Rosenkrantz Tower, and 12th century St Mary’s Church, known as Mariakirken in Norwegian.

Your tour will also take in the UNESCO-listed buildings in the Bryggen district. Once the haunt of 14th century Hanseatic League traders, these colourful wooden wharves now house artisanal boutiques and galleries ideal for souvenir shopping.

The tour will end at the pier where your ship, MS Trollfjord, is waiting to depart by mid-afternoon. Once we’ve welcomed you aboard and you’ve settled into your cabin or suite, you’ll meet your Coastal Experience Team. You’ll get to know each member of the team well as they give lectures and organise onboard activities for you throughout your voyage.

Grab yourself a drink in the ship’s two-storey panorama lounge and meet your fellow guests. As the ship sails from Bergen and into Hjeltefjord, your scenic adventure along Norway’s coast is underway.

Perfect panoramas

Molde is the capital and commercial centre of Romsdalen, which sits on the southern coast of the Romsdal Peninsula. We’ve stopped at this port many times before on our Coastal Express route, but this time we’ll be making a much longer stop, so you’ll have all the time you need to get your fill of the town.

There are optional activities organised by your Coastal Experience Team that add to your experience of Molde. Accessible nearby on an optional excursion is the Atlantic Road, an icon of the Norwegian coast that often features in Hollywood movies.

If the weather is favourable and time permits, join us on an optional hike up to Varden viewpoint for the best panoramic views of the area. Gaze at the town from above at a height of 402 metres above sea level and admire the 222 snowy peaks across Moldefjord.

If you prefer to stay closer to the ground, you can pop into the Romsdal Museum, one of Norway’s largest folk museums about ten minutes away from the town centre.

An ancient fishing town

The Vikna archipelago is a chain of around 6,000 islands, islets and skerries. The largest of the chain, Inner-Vikna, is where we’ll make our next stop. We aim to dock at the port town of Rørvik around mid-morning, remaining there most of the day.

The town and its surrounding areas have a long history, with burial mounds found there that date back to ancient times. The area’s maritime legacy is well-documented across Rørvik’s many museums, particularly The Norwegian Coastal Museum. Time travel through the history of Rørvik on an optional guided tour across three of the town’s key museums.

Similarly, at SalmoNor visiting centre, you can take a tour of a modern salmon farm and find out more about the Norwegian aquaculture industry that supplies the world with tasty Nordic salmon.

Another major export is cod, and the town even has an annual Cod Festival in March. This species of fish is especially common in the waters of the archipelago during winter, so why not indulge yourself in some fresh cod cakes while here.

iconic_m1r71e

Village life and fjord nature

The administrative centre of a municipality with the same name, Lødingen is a village on the southwestern shore of Hinnøya, with a population of under 2,000. This is a port that our ships used to visit on one of our earlier coastal routes and returning here is a kind of homecoming for us.

We’ll dock at around midday, using Lødingen as a base for a few hours to explore more of Hinnøya island, Norway’s largest island south of Svalbard. Wander the streets near the port and admire the traditional red fishing huts, or rorbuer, that line the shore. As you walk, you’ll likely notice the calming atmosphere that village life brings.

The highlight of this visit has to be the breathtaking fjords and mountains that the Norwegian coast is so famous for. Branching off of Andfjord, Gullesfjord cuts into the north side of Hinnøya, bordered by pristine mountain ranges. The area is popular among campers, who stay on the campsite or in cabins and fish for cod in the fjord during winter.

From Lødingen, you can join a handful of optional excursions, including a fishing trip with a local, an immersive Sámi experience to learn more about their culture and history, or a visit to Dampskipsbrygga, Lødingen’s former wharf.

iconic_shutterstock_1272590674

The city of Northern Lights

Alta is one of the bigger coastal towns we visit, with a population of over 10,000 people. A particularly famous part of the town is Alta River, one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. Here, large salmon are regularly caught, with some even weighing up to 24 kg. You won’t regret trying some fresh grilled salmon in one of the local restaurants.

At 70 degrees north, this town is still far above the Arctic Circle. The area is known for particularly good Northern Lights visibility, so keep your camera ready. If the skies are clear and the conditions are right during the winter season, you should be able to get some amazing shots of the lights dancing above you.

You can learn more about this incredible natural light show on a guided tour of the town. The Northern Lights Cathedral even has an exhibition showing how Alta became the epicentre for ground-breaking research of the Aurora Borealis between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Increased snowfall in the winter allows for some truly authentic Arctic excursions. The snow and climate of Alta also creates the perfect conditions to build and maintain the Igloo Hotel, located on the banks of river Alta.

During winter, you’ll have the option of visiting and touring the world’s northernmost ice hotel, built out of snow and ice every winter and carved with different artistic themes by local sculptors. Head to the hotel’s ice bar, decorated with handcrafted ice sculptures and order a drink in an ice glass – no ice cubes needed.

norway_honningsvag_northern-lights_reisegraf

The northernmost point

You have a full and exciting day to look forward to in Honningsvåg. The northernmost city on the mainland, Honningsvåg’s landscape is quite distinctive, with barely any trees or bushes. This far north, winters are long and snowfall is high, so get ready for some fantastic winter scenery and activities.

Feel the snow crunching under your snowshoes as you hike across the plains. You might even be able to try your hand at ice fishing, a beloved winter tradition in the far north. Get a taste of the local delicacy, king crab, which is caught in the waters around Honningsvåg and served year-round. Admire local art in the Once Upon a Dream art gallery, and don’t miss the Honningsvåg Church. This is the oldest building in the area, dating back to 1885.

The highlight of any trip to Honningsvåg is a visit to the North Cape. This is one of the northernmost points of mainland Europe, which we will access by snowmobile during the snowy winter months. Standing near the northern edge of Norway and looking out over the Barents Sea under the polar night sky is a truly special experience. Add the ethereal Northern Lights dancing in the sky above, and you’ve got a sight you’ll never forget.

The cape is marked with a famous globe monument, which demands a selfie or two… or five. When you’re ready, head inside North Cape Hall to warm up, and learn about life in the High Arctic through a short film and a variety of exhibits.

Having reached the northernmost point of our voyage, we’ll turn around and begin going south as we sail away in the evening.

iconic_gettyimages-1203337962

The gateway to the Arctic

Today you’ll get the chance to see the Arctic Capital itself. Often called the “gateway to the Arctic”, Tromsø is Norway's northernmost university city, and the ideal place to enjoy some proper winter activities, like dog sledding and snowshoeing.

Sitting around 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø experiences Polar Night for just over a month in the winter, and will give you a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

This urban city is buzzing with life, with everything from trendy restaurants and cafés to boutique shops selling local crafts and produce, and even high fashion. MS Trollfjord will be in port here for the whole day, giving you plenty of time to both join optional excursions and explore the city yourself.

Some of the exhilarating activities on offer will get you closer to nature and Tromsø’s wildlife. Go on a mini polar expedition, as you cross the snowy Arctic on a sled pulled by husky dogs. Or be immersed in Arctic serenity as you enjoy an unforgettable view of orca and humpback whales playing in their natural habitat.

For a cultural fix, learn to knit with the locals and satisfy your curiosity about daily life north of the Arctic Circle on an excursion to meet the local Sommarøy people.

Lofoten island

Lofoten islands and our historic birthplace

Today, we explore Lofoten, a striking group of islands that rise out of the Norwegian Sea. As soon as you see the towering peaks around you with fishing villages clinging to their sides, you’ll understand why this island chain is so often praised as one of Norway’s most stunning locations.

We can’t visit the area without spending some time in Stokmarknes. This historic town is part of Vesterålen, an archipelago just northeast of Lofoten. Of all the places we visit, this one is particularly special to us. It was here that the Original Coastal Express was founded in 1893 by shipping pioneer Richard With.

The Coastal Express soon became a lifeline for Norway’s remote coastal communities, and fittingly, our legacy has been immortalised in the place where it all began. Standing on the waterfront, you’ll find our 1956 ship MS Finnmarken, encased in a glass building like a ship in a bottle.

This is Hurtigrutemuseet, the museum that chronicles our history as Norway’s leading coastal exploration cruise line from start until now. On a guided tour, you can explore the retired vessel and experience the atmosphere of a past era.

We’ll dock in the town of Svolvær in the afternoon. Located on the island of Austvågøya in the south of Lofoten, Svolvær is the biggest town of the archipelago, humming with shops, restaurants, galleries, and cafés to enjoy. You can also admire views of the Svolvær Goat, a nearby mountain named for resembling a goat and its horns.

A variety of optional excursions are available from Svolvær, including winter fishing, paddling along the coastline in a kayak, or embarking on a bus tour to learn more about Lofoten’s history.

Distinctive Nordic nature

Surrounded by islands and water, Brønnøysund sits on a narrow peninsula that juts out of the mainland. Around 5,000 people live in this small town, many in colourful houses against a backdrop of gentle slopes and dramatic mountain peaks.

Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the harbour and take a walk along Havnegata. Drop into one of the pubs for a snack, or treat yourself to a meal in a local restaurant. Wander the visitors’ marina, or visit an 1870 Neo-Gothic stone church.

As we sail, look out for the Vega archipelago, a cluster of some 6,500 islands, skerries, and islets. There’s a UNESCO World Heritage Centre on the island of Gardsøy which showcases how highly prized eider down is harvested from the local eider ducks by providing little huts for them to build their nests in.

On an island south of Brønnøysund, you’ll find Torghatten mountain, recognisable by a natural tunnel that runs through the centre. According to local lore, the hole is the result of a troll who fired an arrow at a young woman who had rejected his advances. As the Troll King threw his hat to protect her, the sun began to rise, turning the hat to stone with a hole in the middle from the arrow.

On an optional excursion, you can take an hour’s walk up to the hole in the mountain. Peer through the tunnel and enjoy the view of the islands around.

iconic_aksla-alesund-norway-hgr-102276-photo_photo_competition_39l-original

A picturesque town

After a hearty breakfast on the ship, we’ll dock mid-morning at Ålesund, a town that spreads out across a string of islands.

As we approach the shore, you might first notice the distinctive style of architecture. Every detail of the buildings, from the bright colours to the rounded spires, was inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which was popular in the early 1900s. Almost the entire town received a makeover in the style when it was rebuilt after a major fire in 1904.

As you leave the waterfront, you’ll find yourself in a fairy-tale town, wandering narrow streets lined with unique houses. Opt for a walking tour of Ålesund’s distinctive Art Nouveau architecture, then taste some of the best small-brewery beer from the local area. You could also venture out of town for a scenic bus tour to Alnes, and experience the Saga Islands, a lighthouse, and countless tales of the Vikings.

If your camera’s memory card isn’t already full after this, you can get impressive photos of the archipelago from the nearby Mount Aksla viewpoint. The 418 steps leading there might look intimidating, but the views are well worth the effort.

Viking history

Journeying south along Norway’s west coast, we sail past some of Norway’s most famous fjords, none more so than Hardangerfjord.

At 179 kilometres in length, it is the second longest fjord in the country, and fifth longest in the world.

The stunning waterway is one of Norway’s finest. See mountain scenery everywhere you look, with the white peaks that tower over the fjord being reflected in the shimmering water below.

The region is famous for its apple products, from jams and juice to its award-winning cider, which one food writer described as ‘Nordic Champagne’.

Weather permitting, we may be able to dock at Rosendal or one of the other picturesque settlements that cling to the shores by the fjord. A small, charming village, Rosendal’s main highlight is the 16th century Barony, a manor famous for its beautiful rose garden and landscaped grounds.

We’ll reach Haugesund, the ‘Home of the Viking Kings’ in the afternoon. The nickname is inspired by sites such as St. Olav’s Church, built in 1250 by King Håkon Hå. There’s also Haraldshaugen, a national monument reputed to be the first king’s burial site.

Step back in time to the Viking Age with a visit to the fascinating exhibits at Nordvegen Visiting Centre, or step out on a walk with a local artist to learn about glassblowing, architecture and Marilyn Monroe! For a more adventurous and unique perspective on Norway’s Viking history, try the Viking Experience by RIB along the beautiful and narrow Norway strait.

The city of lighthouses

Located on the southern tip of the country, Kristiansand is Norway’s fifth-largest city. We aim to be at port from morning to late afternoon, giving you plenty of time to explore.

As you walk around Kristiansand, you might notice that the city is built on a uniform grid plan, with several straight roads running from the harbour all the way through the city. These roads are lined with architecture from different eras – evidence of the extensive rebuilding the city underwent after major fires in the 18th and 19th centuries and an attack during World War II.

Kristiansand is on a mission to become the most sustainable port in Europe. Find out more about this admirable goal on an optional excursion that includes a visit to Odderøya Island. Here, you can see beautiful views of the ocean and city and visit 18th-century military barracks that have been transformed into creative artist studios running several sustainable initiatives.

Kristiansand’s 20th-century military past is the focus of an optional excursion to Batterie Vara. Originally built as a German fort in World War II, it features the world’s second-largest cannon ever mounted on land.

Another optional excursion takes you to the working Lindesnes Lighthouse, which marks Norway’s southernmost point. See the beacon that has been guiding seafarers to safety on dark nights since the early 20th century and learn about the site’s long history, which goes all the way back to 1656.

Back on the ship, we’ll end our cruise on a high note with a farewell dinner. Take this chance to swap stories and show photos to your fellow travellers one last time.

Discovering Norway's capital

From the south to the north, and back down to the south, reflect on your journey as you watch our approach to our last port of call, Oslo, in the early morning. Say your goodbyes to the crew and disembark the ship into the capital, which marks the end of your travels with us.

You’ve sailed on the North Cape Line, exploring Norway’s coastal cities and villages all the way to the top of the European continent. During the journey, you’ll have experienced Norway’s varied climate, seen majestic mountains and fjords, and maybe gazed up in awe at the Northern Lights once or several times.

We hope you’ll cherish each of the memories of the North Cape Line that you’ll take home with you. Come sail with us again soon on another iconic voyage of our spectacular home: the Norwegian coast.
