The Final Solo Tour

Final Solo Tour

Rick recently completed a tour of the U.S. and South America with a series of solo piano concerts for the last time in 2024. Rick, who has become almost as well known for his intimate piano shows as his prog rock extravaganzas, has decided that after a career spanning over 50 years, he is calling a halt to lengthy American one-man show tours, in order to concentrate on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians.

As an exclusive gift for fans, on these shows Rick premiered a brand new piece of music, "Yessonata", a 30 minute instrumental work featuring YES themes and melodies, woven into sonata form.

Rick says, "I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday – but there is so much to fit in before then that I'm having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date. I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it's time to call it a day. I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion. The plan is not to perform at the same venue twice throughout this period, so whatever venue you are hopefully thinking of coming to, it will be the last performance there – and I am taking this opportunity of thanking everyone and anyone who has supported me over the last 53 years!"

More dates later in 2024 will be announced in due course, please do not contact the site asking about future dates.

Please also read Rick's further statement about this tour.

Yuletide Christmas Show

Yuletide Christmas Show Banner

After an overwhelming response when The Rick Wakeman Yuletide Christmas Show went on sale at the start of March, additional dates have now been added: London Lyric Theatre (25 November), Stoke-on-Trent Victoria Hall (3 December) and Cheltenham Town Hall (19 December).

As previously announced, after a year off, Rick Wakeman’s traditional Christmas tour returns in November and December 2024 with an all-new show.

" There's an old expression which goes 'If it ain't broke, then don't fix it' ", says Rick, " and in most cases, that's absolutely correct. However, I've decided that in spite of the success of the tried and tested formula for my solo Christmas tours over the last few years, it's time for a rethink, and so the one-man show becomes a three-man show – well, two male and one female, to be entirely accurate. "

With a stage set-up of two keyboards and a grand piano, Rick will be joined by two very special guests: his son and fellow keyboard player Adam Wakeman and Mollie Marriott, daughter of the late Steve Marriott, both of whom performed so brilliantly with him as part of the English Rock Ensemble on his Return Of The Caped Crusader tour in February.

The tour will start in Portsmouth on 23 November 2024 and then visit High Wycombe, St Albans, Folkestone, Leicester, Basingstoke, Evesham, Croydon, Bradford, Worthing, Ipswich, Bexhill, Poole, Guildford and Bath before concluding at London's Cadogan Hall on 20 December.

The new line-up will give Rick much more range and flexibility in the material he is able to perform, which will be a mixture of old and new from his back catalogue, some traditional Christmas songs and an unexpected piece of audience participation!

Expect hilarious banter from Wakemans Senior and Junior, as Adam tries to control his father's gentle 'unwokeness', fabulous soaring vocals from Mollie and virtuosic performances from a pair of musicians widely acknowledged as two of the most outstanding keyboard players in the business.

Rick says it will be an evening of festive fun with a difference. Adam says he's worried what his father means by that. Mollie says, whatever, she'll probably side with Rick, as he's paying the wages! In other words, a Christmas show not to be missed!

Tickets for the additional three shows will go on sale at 10am on Friday 26th April.

No tour currently scheduled.

Rick Wakeman Announces Farewell Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Rick Wakeman is hanging up his sequined cape after one final U.S. tour. “I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday,” the prog rock keyboardist said in a statement, “for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s May 18th! — but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now, and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.”

The first leg of the tour kicks off March 19 at the Ridgefield Playhouse, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. It wraps up March 29 at the Egg in Albany, New York, but will return to the States later in the year after a South American run. “I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day,” Wakeman said. “I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion.”

Wakeman joined Yes in 1971 and played on many of their most beloved albums, including Fragile and Close to the Edge . He quit the band in 1974 and returned for brief stints in 1976, 1990, 1995, and 2002. He teamed up with original Yes singer Jon Anderson and “Owner of a Lonely Heart”-era guitarist Trevor Rabin in 2016 to form ARW, which eventually changed their name to Yes Featuring John Anderson, Trevor Rabin, and Rick Wakeman. The group quietly dissolved in 2018.

Over the past six years, Wakeman has focused largely on solo tours, though he says he’s ready to move onto other ventures after this last tour. “The plan is not to perform at the same venue twice throughout this period,” he says, “so whatever venue you are hopefully thinking of coming to, it will be the last performance there – and I am taking this opportunity of thanking everyone and anyone who has supported me over the last 53 years!”

The Royal Albert Hall is the perfect venue for Rick Wakeman. They are both old, respected London Institutions. They have both enjoyed star-studded existences. The Royal Albert Hall has seen Freddie Mercury, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Paul McCartney and so many others pass through its doors and on to the stage of the lush, velvet seated auditorium.

Wakeman has sessioned with David Bowie, T.Rex, Cat Stevens and Black Sabbath, but is best known as the keyboardist for progressive rock outfit, Yes, working on their albums Fragile (1971), Close to the Edge (1972), and Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973), before kicking off a highly successful solo career in 1974. He has recorded over fifty albums since then, among the more revered of these being 1984, Time Machine and Night Airs.

There is an air of regard that feels befitting at the Royal Albert Hall, as Wakeman takes to the keyboards and riffles out some classics from his long-standing career. There is a sense of allure that memorialises the glory days of glam and there are many hands waving along to all those years in retrospective.

What a wonderful show. It was a great mix of storytelling and music. Rick would talk for a few minutes, a story about his career or life, a joke or two, tie it back to the songs he was introducing and then play a couple of songs. Simple set up, just Rick and a grand piano.

The music was great and simply amazing to see Rick play the piano. Honestly, I had forgotten what a talent he has. And I never knew some of the music that he made as a session player.

He was warm and genuine in his talks. No opening act, show was about 2.5 hours long. Just a great night. If he is coming to your city, don't miss this show.

Beautiful show from a very talented artist.

These piano versions of many great songs were absolutely amazing.

In between songs, Rick was telling the audience various stories that happened to him in his life.

These were absolutely hilarious and this show was like a stand up comic combination with a piano concerto together.

I recommend this to everyone.

You must see this unique concert.

A lifetime experience.

Pure analog heaven. He had fun and played well. Toward the end of the show the keytar came out and he challenged Trevor to a duo duel. Ripping good time. Thanks for following through with this project.

He continues to be a master keyboard player. His wit and jokes were very good. I would have enjoyed hearing an electric keyboard of songs as well. He's lived life his way and you have to appreciate that.

YES Keyboardist Rick Wakeman Announces Final US Solo Tour

"I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day"

YES Keyboardist Rick Wakeman Announces Final US Solo Tour

YES keyboardist Rick Wakeman has announced that he will embark on a farewell US solo tour, revealing the first leg of dates for this spring.

Billed as “The Final Solo Tour,” Wakeman’s last one-man dates will take place throughout 2024, including two North American legs. The first batch of US dates kicks off March 19th in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and runs through March 29th in Albany, New York.

A Live Nation ticket pre-sale for select dates begins Wednesday (January 24th) at 10 a.m. ET using the code SPOTLIGHT . Fans can also look for deals or get tickets to sold-out dates via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

The concerts will see Wakeman performing “YES music and other favorites,” including a new piece entitled “Yessonata” — a 30-minute instrumental featuring “YES themes and melodies, woven into sonata form.”

A press release stated that Wakeman was stepping away from solo performances in order to “concentrate on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians.” Shared the rock legend in his own statement:

“I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday – for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s May 18th! – but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.

Close to the End: Ex-Yes Keyboardist Rick Wakeman Announces Final U.S. Solo Tour

by Matt Friedlander January 23, 2024, 6:02 am

Former Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman has announced that he will embark on his final solo tour of the U.S. and South America in the spring. The trek, which has been dubbed “An Evening of Yes Music and Other Favorites,” will begin with a March 19 concert in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Videos by American Songwriter

The U.S. leg of the trek features nine confirmed shows, and will run through a March 29 performance in Albany, New York. The outing will include a March 27-28 stand at the popular Wolf Trap venue in Vienna, Virginia.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer also will play an April 3 show in Mexico City before heading to South America for six concerts. That leg is mapped out from an April 6 concert in Santiago, Chile, through an April 15 performance in Curitiba, Brazil.

Wakeman is planning to announced additional North American dates later in the year.

Tickets for Wakeman’s U.S. and South American solo shows are available via various outlets, including StubHub . At StubHub, orders are 100% guaranteed through the site’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

During the tour, Wakeman will premiere a 30-minute instrumental piece called “Yessonata.” Described as “an exclusive gift for fans,” the work will weave Yes themes and melodies into sonata form.

“I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday—for those of you who wish to send me a card, [my birthday is] 18th May!” the 74-year-old musician noted in a message on his official website, “but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.”

Wakeman continued, “I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day. I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion.”

The keyboardist has decided to stop doing solo tours so that he can spend more time concentrating on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians.

Prior to the solo tour, Wakeman has scheduled a nine-date U.K. trek in February called The Return of the Caped Crusader that will feature him performing with his group the English Rock Ensemble. The two-part concerts will showcase Wakeman’s new arrangements of classic Yes songs, as well as his 1974 concept album Journey to the Centre of the Earth .

The U.K. tour is plotted out from a February 15 show in Glasgow through a February 28 gig in Bristol.

See the full routing of Wakeman’s solo tour below. Fans of Wakeman will not want to pass up on this opportunity to see the classically trained prog-rock legend play what may be his last solo concert in your area.

Don’t wait – these tickets are likely to go quickly. Head to StubHub now to see if tickets are available to a show near you!

Rick Wakeman will take his Music And Stories tour on the road in the USA in March and April

Rick Wkaeman

Rick Wakeman  has announced he will be taking his Music And Stories live show over to America for a run of live dates throughout March and April.

The evening promises a mix of Wakeman's music from throughout his career, from some of his best-loved material with  Yes , his own solo career and from his time working with the likes of David Bowie , and will be punctuated by anecdotes and reminiscences of his life.

Wakeman will also be bringing along a few electronic keyboards to add variety and texture to his set. “I’m looking forward to ringing the changes with the addition of keyboards, which is a bit of a departure from my traditional ‘piano shows’, but will give me the opportunity to vary the setlist," he says.

“It’s always so enjoyable playing in America,” Wakeman  adds. “At every show, I see old friends and hopefully, make new ones.”

On his official website , Wakeman recently announced a new set of live solo dates in North and South America, which he noted would mark the start of his last-ever concerts as a “one-man show”. The statement however, suggests that the keyboardist will not be retiring yet, noting that he will spend the future “[concentrating] on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians”.

To clarify any confusion, Wakeman took to X to explain: “In March I perform 9 shows in the USA which will be the beginning of the very last one man show tours there. The main bulk of shows will be in October [and] November [and] if demand is there, may carry on into 2025.”

just to put the facts straight …..In March I perform 9 shows in the USA which will be the beginning of the very last one man show tours there. The main bulk of shows will be in October & November & if demand is there, may carry on into 2025. — Rick Wakeman CBE (@GrumpyOldRick) January 23, 2024

In the statement on his website, Wakeman stated that he had always intended to stop touring by his 77th birthday, writing: “I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday – for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s 18th May! – but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date. I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day.”

To commemorate the musician’s final solo tour, he will premiere a new piece of music during the performances. Entitled ‘Yessonata’, the 30-minute work will weave melodies from Yes material into a cohesive sonata form.

Rick Wakeman has announced the long-delayed follow-up to 2019’s sell-out ‘The Grumpy Old Rock Star’ tour with ‘The Even Grumpier Old Rock Star’ tour of North America.

Having made his name creating prog rock extravaganzas, in his solo shows Wakeman – who was recently awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II – returns to his roots with a program packed with virtuosic piano performances and hilarious anecdotes, inspired by his 50-plus-year career.

Repertoire will range from his solo works and his stints in the band Yes through to his early days as a session musician playing keyboards on such classics as David Bowie’s “Life On Mars”, plus surprises like his unique interpretations of Beatles hits and many more memorable tunes, adapted for the grand piano. And all of this glorious music is punctuated by riotous reflections on his life and the people he’s met along the way.

The 24-city ‘Even Grumpier Old Rock Star’ tour will kick-off on Thursday, October 14 in Derry, New Hampshire at the Tupelo Music Hall and continue through November. Tickets go on sale starting Friday, June 25 at 10 a.m. local time. Visit the artist’s official website for further information.

Professional musician, keyboard player, songwriter, broadcaster and raconteur, Wakeman’s career started as a much-in-demand session player, who performed on recordings by David Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed, Al Stewart and hundreds more artists. His big break came in 1971 when he joined Yes, who went on to become the most successful prog rock band in the world, but Wakeman has also always gone his own way outside the framework of that group.

In the 1970s, he achieved chart-topping success with solo albums such as Journey To The Centre Of The Earth , The Six Wives Of Henry VIII and The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table , which cumulatively sold over 10 million copies in North America alone.

He has written several film scores, amongst them two for director Ken Russell ( Lisztomania and Crimes Of Passion ) and two ‘Harry Palmer’ movies starring Michael Caine ( Bullet To Beijing and Midnight In St. Petersburg ), and in the U.K., has built up an impressive reputation as a witty guest and host on shows like “Grumpy Old Men”, “Countdown”, “Watchdog” and the comedy cabaret show “Live At Jongleurs”.

In 2017, he made British chart history when his Piano Portraits record became the first solo piano instrumental album to enter the U.K.’s Top 10 on release — a feat he then repeated with last year’s Piano Odyssey . Both records feature tunes that have a special connection with Rick’s personal musical journey and his subsequent tours, in which he performs a selection of tracks accompanied by hilarious memories and anecdotes have been instant sellouts in the U.K.

Rick Wakeman announces ‘The Final Solo Tour: An Evening of Yes Music and Other Favorites’

rick wakeman us tour

An all-new show featuring highlights from Rick Wakeman’s career with Yes and his solo work, including the premiere of the brand new Yessonata

The ultimate keyboard wizard, Rick Wakeman CBE, will be embarking on a tour of the US with a series of solo piano concerts for the last time in 2024. Rick, who has become almost as well-known for his intimate piano shows as his prog rock extravaganzas, has decided that after a career spanning over 50 years, he is calling a halt to lengthy American one-man show tours, in order to concentrate on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians.

As an exclusive gift for fans, on these shows Rick will be premiering a brand new piece of music: Yessonata, a 30- minute instrumental work featuring YES themes and melodies, woven into sonata form.

Rick first started establishing a reputation as one of rock’s most original and proficient keyboard players in the late Sixties, when he worked with the likes of David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, Al Stewart, Elton John and other artists too numerous to mention, as a much-in-demand session player. He stepped out of the recording studio and into the limelight when he first joined the Strawbs and then YES, helping to make the latter the most successful progressive rock band in the world by contributing to seminal albums such as Fragile and Close To The Edge.

But outside of YES, Rick was really able to unleash his creativity with a series of groundbreaking concept albums: The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which have been performed in large-scale shows featuring bands, orchestras and choirs.

However, he is equally at home as a solo artist in up close environment of concert halls, performing music on a piano – both his own and tunes that have a special resonance for him – and recounting wickedly funny stories taken from the length of his career. In recent years, he has added a rack of electric keyboards to ring the changes and enable him to enlarge his live solo repertoire.

Now, for the last time in 2024, Rick will be taking to the road in the US with an all-new solo piano and keyboard show, featuring the premiere of a stunning new work. Don’t miss this final opportunity to enjoy an evening of great music and hilarious stories, delivered by one of the truly legendary figures of rock music.

A STATEMENT FROM RICK:

“I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday – for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s May 18th! – but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.

I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day. I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion.

The plan is not to perform at the same venue twice throughout this period, so whatever venue you are hopefully thinking of coming to, it will be the last performance there – and I am taking this opportunity of thanking everyone and anyone who has supported me over the last 53 years!”

After this initial string of dates, Rick will be taking the tour to South America in April, but will return to North America for the second leg later in the year.

via Rick Wakeman / Youtube

In a press release, Wakeman said:

“It’s always so enjoyable playing in America. At every show, I see old friends and hopefully, make new ones.”

Wakeman’s concert will include piano arrangements of songs from all of his albums. It will feature music from Wakeman’s early career as a session musician on songs like David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” as well as choices from his solo catalog, “quirky covers,” and music from Wakeman’s time with Yes.

Wakeman hopes to bring a few electronic keyboards along with the grand piano setup, which he says “will allow me the opportunity to modify the set list,” unlike his past solo tours.

Wilson & Wakeman – Arena vocalist Damian Wilson and Black Sabbath keysman Adam Wakeman – have become one of prog’s most creative duos, with a chemistry that’s unrivalled. Latest album Can We Leave The Light On Longer? finds the pair exploring topics from AI to absent friends via some of the most heartfelt and tear-jerking songs Prog has heard in a while.

It’s 11am and there’s mayhem on the other side of the Zoom call. Tuning in from the former’s home studio in Buckinghamshire, Adam Wakeman and Damian Wilson are in fits of giggles, faux- bickering, and have set up an elaborate show for this interview.

Wakeman asks if he can move Wilson’s acoustic guitar as he’s concerned about its preservation, which he then picks up and tumbles onto, behind Wilson, with much comedy clanging. Wilson, meanwhile, has a cassette player that he’s fiddling with, and keeps pressing play on a tape titled The Best Of Rick Wakeman – a prop for upcoming live shows that’s designed to irk his bandmate.

Prog is having flashbacks. At Cropredy in 2019, when the duo were post-show and tiddly, this interviewer was playing a Mary Poppins role in bringing the performers down from near-levitating in a Portakabin, just like the I Love To Laugh scene from the 1964 movie.

When you’re around them, even screen-to-screen, the chemistry is like lightning. Best of friends, brilliantly entertaining, they can write a decent tune or two. They met nearly 30 years ago via their mutual musician-producer friend Fraser T Smith – when Wilson was moving from Landmarq to Threshold, with Ayreon guest spots and a spell touring in Les Misérables on the horizon – and gelled for life.

“I went to your house and you had a floor-to-ceiling PA in your room,” Wakeman reminds Wilson. “I thought, ‘Imagine what he’s like on the road. This guy means business.’ Then we started writing and rehearsing together.”

This led to forming prog metal act Headspace – but not all songs were made for a full-throttle, floor-to-ceiling PA type of presentation, and the pair aren’t just about tomfoolery and high jinks. Over eight years together as a duo, deeper ideas have emerged through their mainly acoustic piano-and-guitar style, from 2016’s Weir Keeper’s Tale , 2018’s The Sun Will Dance In Its Twilight Hour and the recently-released Can We Leave The Light On Longer?

With all these things being used against us, the lack of freedom is apparent. Somebody’s got an awful lot of power

It was written and recorded in the rare downtime when Wakeman wasn’t playing with Black Sabbath, or the unexpectedly popular Blue Note-style Jazz Sabbath, and between Wilson’s engagements with Arena, Kayak’s Edward Reekers and his own One Knight Only band shows. The album is about “life, and the chaos that makes us human,” Wilson says. “It’s also asking, ‘Can we experience life just a little longer?’”

The opening track, Artificial Intelligence , is about something extremely worrying to Wilson. “I don’t understand why we’re giving so much information out about us so freely, everywhere,” he says. “And it’s not just the information, it’s the connection with algorithms, facial recognition and AI, where everything comes together. We’re producing a fantastic prison for ourselves.

Every day we’re using AI (whether we realise it or not), and in itself it’s not harmful. But in the wrong hands... “We’re being played heavily all the time,” he continues. “We’re getting wise to this now. I think of my dad having this scammer a week before he died, but he was great with it. His bank account could have been cleared out... but he had nothing in it, just enough to cover costs for his funeral.”

Wakeman admits that if an AI-sampled message request for money came through from his daughter, currently travelling around Cambodia, he’d rather send cash than not. “What concerns me more is the political side of things,” says Wilson. “With all these things being used against us, the lack of freedom is apparent. Somebody’s got an awful lot of power.”

Other topics on the record are more personal. As is customary, Wakeman sings on two numbers. November ’s inspiration is a step-parent with dementia, looking at the world from their point of view. The Man From The Island comes from Wakeman’s teenage memories.

“I went to school on the Isle Of Man, for about three years,” he says. “My dad was always away. There was loads of music on the island; and when I was 16 I got myself into a band with Anglin Buttimore and two other guys. This is where I cut my teeth, playing three, four, five nights a week.

You know you’ve got a good, powerful song if you’re bent over your guitar in floods of tears

“Anglin passed away in 2020. It took me ages to finish the song for him, but it was a bit like therapy and I wanted it to be good. I actually finished when Damian and I were on tour on the Isle. I played it the night it was completed and Anglin’s wife Jen was there.”

“It was amazing,” says Wilson. “I was side-of-stage and said to him, ‘You’ve literally just written that, and you’re going to perform it? OK.’ But he got me [clutches chest]. It was a beautiful rendition… much better than on the album!”

Wakeman then added the talents of a local community choir thanks to his old school friend Mandy Griffin, a singing teacher and music director. “I wanted a hymn-like part at the start, and Mandy gathered her crew. Then Dave The Chem – no one has a surname on the Isle, and he used to run the chemist – recorded it for me and sent it over.”

Let’s Talk also employs a church and gospel sound. “That’s a break-up song,” says Wilson. “It’s heartbreak and tragedy... isn’t it funny how our best friends can then become our worst enemies? I love music and I refuse to have malice enter it. So whatever might have happened, after the initial emotions, I’ll throw that malice away.”

“This is what we have with our music,” Wakeman says. “The songwriting is genuine, even if it’s not a direct experience of ours.”

“You know you’ve got a good, powerful song if you’re bent over your guitar in floods of tears,” Wilson nods.

This was for listeners who don’t go for Sabbath or the heavy stuff we do

He details “his own mindset” with Multiplicity – “I’m not diagnosed with anything, but I have a child in my head as well as the reasonable, rational side, and I don’t need it labelling” – and speaks of his nephew with Hero , who took his own life in 2023. “Adam was absolutely amazing on this,” he says. “In support as well as songwriting.”

It might not be a tear-jerker, but the jaunty The Battle Of The Bare Knuckle Fighter is dedicated to their friend and dance music DJ Paul Spencer, aka Dario G, currently being treated for cancer. “It’s got trumpet on it, which he plays,” says Wilson. “Paul’s a real fighter, and part of that is his amazing positivity.”

Leaning into self-improvement, Turn Your Life Around is about “the spirit of the road,” making a case for ‘it’s never too late to make a change.’ “I thought that was about my neighbour shouting at Damian when he pulled his van up on his driveway,” Wakeman says.

“The van I’m living in...” Wilson says. Ah yes, let’s circle back to Cropredy in 2019 when, just before the festival, Wilson’s houseboat sank on the Thames, with all his stuff on board. “I just managed to dive in and get my guitar,” he remembers. Home sweet home is now his “rustbucket” Mercedes Sprinter.

“I can hear you coming from miles off,” says Wakeman. “And the next sound I hear is my neighbours locking their sheds.”

Oh, the banter, it continues, especially with some mickey-taking from Wakeman around Wilson’s track, Addlestone , where he recalls his childhood in Surrey, riding wild horses and trying to impress older girls.

Laughter aside, what was the aim for Can We Leave The Light On Longer? “This was for listeners who don’t go for Sabbath or the heavy stuff we do,” says Wakeman. “I think it’s our most personal, yet encompassing, album yet. Lyrically, listeners can pull different things from the songs, but it’s been more of a window into what’s been going on in Damian’s life and the people that are close to him.”

“But the best songs are our songs,” Wilson says. “I always want my music to connect with a listener. But the reason for these albums is my continuing connection to Adam. That’s the most important thing.”
