It was misleading, at the application, it's looks like it will be Suzanne Vega concert. But it was some unknown band that Suzanne Vega took a little part (she read a text)

Very disappointed...

Waist of money

Amazing show.

Suzanne was brilliant and so was the band.

Played the 2 albums and some extra tunes, many people shouted for “Marlene on the wall” and she made that wish come true.

Suzanne Vega is so talented, she had the crowd spellbound! Her voice is like an angel, and even though her accompaniment was superb, she didn't really need to do anything but sing. She has written so many beautiful songs, you can tell she was born with a wonderful gift. I was so moved by her performance, I would recommend her to everyone! Even her setups between the music was clever, it was nice to know the history of the songs. I liked her new songs just as much as the older hits. Great show!!

LATEST NEWS

The 2024 tour follows a busy year of touring in 2023 that saw Vega perform extensively in the U.K., across Europe and in the U.S. Her 2024 dates will treat audiences to a career spanning evening that will include a first listen to songs from a forthcoming album. Vega will be accompanied by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard.

Of Vega’s performances The New York Times notes that she “is attentive to the realm of the unseen.” Finding Connecticut lauded a recent concert as “nothing short of mesmerizing, weaving tales through her soulful songs in a cozy setting that allowed for a deep connection with the audience.”

Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has written and recorded numerous songs that have become part of the contemporary music vernacular, including “Luka,” “Marlene on the Wall” and “Tom’s Diner,” an a cappella piece that was remixed by U.K. electronic dance duo DNA and became a major club hit.

It remains an oft-sampled and covered standard by artists across the musical spectrum. Her albums, including her self-titled debut, follow-up Solitude Standing and 99.9F have sold millions of copies worldwide.

Vega’s most recent release, the career-spanning album An Evening of New York Songs and Stories (Amanuensis/Cooking Vinyl) was hailed by the Associated Press as “an excellent Vega primer, an artist who still merits being on your radar no matter what your hometown may be,” while Stereogum raves that the album is “a stripped-down, intimate tour through her songbook, highlighting her rich voice and novelistic approach to lyrics.”

Suzanne Vega – An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories

Suzanne will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner, Luka, and more!

Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion, Vega’s distinctive, “clear, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago.

Artist Information

Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the early 1980s folk revival when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has been known for performances that convey deep emotion, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

Vega’s most recent album, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories, was released in 2020. A live recording, it incorporates familiar songs like “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner”, deep cuts from her catalog and a cover of “Walk On The Wild Side” by her late friend, Lou Reed. The mix of repertoire also features “New York Is My Destination” from Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers, Vega’s 2016 album from her one-woman play about the Southern gothic novelist Carson McCullers. A filmed version of Vega’s play had its world premiere at the SXSW festival in March 2022 and features songs by Vega with music by Duncan Sheik.

Vega’s debut album was co-produced by Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye and achieved platinum status. “Marlene on the Wall” was a surprise hit in the U.K. and Rolling Stone included the record in their “100 Greatest Recordings of the 1980s.”

1987’s follow-up, Solitude Standing elevated Vega to star status. The album was nominated for three Grammys (including Record of the Year), sold three million copies worldwide and included the hit “Luka”. The album’s opening song was an a cappella piece, “Tom’s Diner,” about a nondescript restaurant near Columbia University. Without Vega’s permission, it was remixed by U.K. electronic duo DNA and bootlegged as “Oh Susanne.” Suddenly Vega’s voice was showing up in the most unlikely setting of all: the club. She permitted an official release of the remix of “Tom’s Diner” under its original title, which reached #5 on the Billboard pop chart.

Continuing to battle preconceptions, she teamed with producer Mitchell Froom for 1992’s 99.9F, the sound of which inspired descriptions like “industrial folk” and “techno folk.” Certified gold, 99.9F won a New York Music Award as Best Rock Album. In 1996, Vega returned with the similarly audacious Nine Objects of Desire, also produced by Froom. In 2007, Vega released the Grammy award-winning Beauty & Crime, a deeply personal reflection of her native New York City in the wake of the loss of her brother Tim Vega and the tragedy of 9/11. Vega’s love for the city shines through as both its subject and its setting, and she mixes the past and present, the public with the private, and familiar sounds with the utterly new—just like the city itself.

The state of generative ai in hollywood: a special report, warner bros. discovery's nba hopes may hinge on elusive 'fourth package' of games, popular on variety.

But there was plenty to latch onto for anyone for whom that material might have seemed a little esoteric. She harked back to “classic” McLorin Salvant sets with a set list that included “One Step Ahead,” a song she’d learned via Aretha, even if you wouldn’t mistake their respective arrangements; “Alfie,” an example of the reimagined Bacharach that frequently makes its way into her shows; and “Riding High,” a lesser-revived Cole Porter classic that occasioned solos from different members of her trio, including her perennial pianist, the masterful Sullivan Fortner. The latter musician could often be found between songs leaning over to his right, clearly attentive to what McLorin Salvant was saying, and it eventually became clear that — besides perhaps being perpetually delighted by his frontwoman — he was looking for clues about what was coming next, since hers are not solidly set-in-stone setlists.

McLorin Salvant is not nervous to throw her own very poetic compositions in amid the numbers she draws from the fringes of the Great American Songbook. “Fog” in particular was a great one, drawing down to a typically sotto voce ending as her band dropped away to leave her as lonely as described in the lyrics. Her performance veered away from jazz more toward the classical sounds typically heard in Disney Hall as she took on a gorgeous song by the 17th century Elizabethan composer John Dowland. Also lending itself more toward formality was a selection from “The Three Penny Opera,” with the singer opening it up to a big, rowdy roar.

But the most bravura part of the set came when she pulled an audible audible and decided to close things out with a two-part sampling of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” which her audiences are sometimes lucky to get one excerpt from, but not two. The soul-scorching “Being Alive,” dramatic climax enough for a show like this, was succeeded by the more comedic — and exhausting — “Getting Married Today,” a multi-character mini-opera for which McLorin Salvant was breathlessly prepared to belt or spit out all of the parts, male baritone and female soprano alike.

That would have seemed like the definition of unfollowable (and a few handfuls of patrons who apparently came just for her exit during the intermission). But McLorin Salvant established prior to the break just “how excited I am to listen to Silvana,” a compliment that was returned by Estrada in the second half when she remarked that her predecessor on stage was “probably my favorite singer, and one of the most genuine human beings I’ve ever known.” Estrada then went on to extol McLorin Salvant as the type of singer who transmogrifies into different types of mystical creatures over the course of a show, “then (is) human again.”

Starkest at the very start, Estrada began her set with a striking, a cappella “Tonada de Ordeño” before picking up her signature accompaniment, a small, guitar-like, but four-stringed instrument called the Venezuelan cuatro, and being joined by a small cadre of musicians that included electronic keys and viola. Her bottomlessly belty voice speaks of anguish and earnestness, but amid that immaculacy, you could hear that Estrada is not just paying lip service when she says that she was also influenced by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and some of the same bluesy sirens that had an effect on McLorin Salvant.

Two left turns proved to be highlights of Estrada’s set. She turned to English-language material just once, for a somewhat faithful but jazzed-up cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” that brought her whole band into the pop oldie’s formerly a cappella scheme. And, as everyone on hand might have hoped, she brought McLorin Salvant back onto the stage. The two powerhouses clasped hands for part of their performance together as they dueted on “Gracias a la Vida,” a song that was a staple of the catalog of Mercedes Sosa, the great 20th-century Argentinian singer. (It’s a song Kacey Musgraves also recorded on her next-to-latest album.) Estrada took the lower part and let McLorin Salvant go high, though clearly either singer could master any part of any harmony. The lovefest extended offstage, with an audience giving thanks for them saying gracias.
