Well I had pretty awesome seats so I got an up and close experience and after waiting 30 plus years to see him then months after a cancelled show I wasn't disappointed.. Of course I wish he played more of my absolute favorites he did give me a real satisfying fix of in my opinion some of his best shit... Although I wish I could hear clearer the banter he exchanged with the crowd or maybe it's cause he was mumbling for he looked like he was semi inebriated well a bit more then semi.. I wasn't disappointed.. Maybe cause I was also more then past semi...and yes I'm referring to my lady boner and party lubricants combo .. Worth the money.. The wait... The exhaustion felt next day after the hype wore off and life resumed

Morrissey at the Royal Albert Hall, 7th March 2018

This was my seventh time seeing the Mozfather live and, having needed a telescope to see him last time I went (at the O2), this time I had splashed out on a good seat. I treated myself, in other words, and I'm glad I did, because being up close really made the evening. And not just for the photos and videos I took, but for the details ... the looks on his face, the hand gestures. All of that. You don't get it from the back of an enormodome, even with Jumbotrons to help. But anyway. After a quick perusal of the merchandise stall (offering scarves, fans, badges and pillowcases as well as the obligatory t-shirts, none of which featured contemporary photographs of Moz), I took my seat early and, if I'm honest, with a little trepidation. Reviews of earlier shows on the tour had been mixed, with The Guardian very much determined not to enjoy themselves. Also, I'm often a little unsure how gigs in all-seater venues will play out - often, the atmosphere is different, I think. Less of a spark. And I was concerned that, although my ticket clearly said "Morrissey plus special guests", I had read that the support act was a film show, not a band... At precisely 8.15pm the pre-show back-drop picture of the late Peter Wyngarde as Jason King disappeared, and the film show started.

To be honest, "film show" is over stating it a bit. YouTube clips spliced together is more accurate. But it was an eclectic selection - with links to the clips used where possible, the montage included: early Ramones; Something Here In My Heart by 60s girl group The Paper Dolls; Tatu covering How Soon Is Now? on a German retread of TOTP; The Sound Of The Crowd by The Human League; Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud by James Brown; a spoken word Candy Darling clip (I think); Dionne Warwick singing Don't Make Me Over; a drag artist joking about nationality; The Sex Pistols singing God Save The Queen; a 60s-looking civil rights speech for racial equality that I couldn't ID; Sally's Song by Amy Lee; a Germaine Greer talking head spot; a clip from L'Insoumis of Alain Delon reclining into his Queen Is Dead sleeve art pose (which got a big cheer); It's The Same Old Song by The Four Tops; Jet Boy by The New York Dolls ... and probably more besides. Throughout this, the bloke sitting next to me kept looking up the songs on Shazam - when he couldn't get a match for the James Brown track, I had to lean over and help him out. He even Shazam'ed the Sex Pistols track, surely one of the least ambiguous tracks of the last fifty years. But I digress.

At precisely 8.50pm the screen that all this had been projected on was whipped down, and out strode Morrissey and his band. He cuts a substantial figure these days, does Moz - not fat but no longer the skinny, callow figure of yesteryear. Middle-aged spread comes to us all if you we eat too many pies, even vegetarian pies. And the fabled quiff is largely a thing of the past, a victim of a receding hairline. But he is still magnetic on stage, owning the space. Dressed top to toe in dark clothes, a string of beads and a dangling key fob completed Morrissey's look. The band, by contrast, were all in white shirts. The stage was lit with neon prefect badge shapes, a nod to the Low In High School theme.

After opening strongly with The Last Of The Famous International Playboys and I Wish You Lonely, the audience was treated to the first of many asides from a pleasantly chatty Moz: "So amazingly, I'm still alive. The question is, are you?" This was followed by Jacky's Only Happy When She's Up On The Stage, which slowed things down a bit, before a stomping Suedehead, which sped them back up again. The crowd, predictably, went wild for this, even though many of them weren't alive when it was released.

After this, there was a bit of a pause whilst Moz dispensed with the line of security at the front of the stage who were spoiling the devoted's view, and complained to unseen crew member Max about a spotlight giving him a headache. When it was turned off, he remarked, "Now you can't see me, which is pretty perfect." This was followed by recent album track When You Open Your Legs, before another aside between tracks: a propos of nothing, Moz appeared to say something like, "Please believe me, I'm not. People are extremely ignorant. They can't be controlled, so don't control them." Was this a reference to Der Spiegel's recent portrayal of him? We may never know.

Slightly unexpectedly, for me at least, Munich Air Disaster 1958 was next, complete with archive footage of Busby's Babes projected on the back screen. "We miss them," Moz concluded. This was swiftly followed by Home Is A Question Mark, for which Jesse Tobias unleashed an electric 12-string and I got a sudden bout of guitarist's envy. After My Love, I'd Do Anything For You, the stage lighting switched to red and yellow as a clue for what was coming next. "This song is delightful," said Moz. "About slavery and servitude in Espana." After which the band launched into The Bullfighter Dies, accompanied by fairly explicit video footage of bulls being stabbed by matadors (during the verses) and matadors being gored (during the "hooray, hooray" chorus). The point was well, if graphically, made.

The only real lull in the show followed, with a slightly flat run-through of If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me. Quite a lot of people went for drinks. Not me though. So I was there to see the cover of Pretenders' track Back On The Chain Gang that followed (backdropped with Chrissie Hynde's yearbook photo), and Moz introducing World Peace Is None Of Your Business by saying, "We invented democracy. We invented free speech. I think it's time we got it back."

The next track was a personal favourite, Hold On To Your Friends, at the end of which (slightly bizarrely) Moz signed some vinyl for people in the front row, whilst the crowd chanted his name. Then pianist Gustavo Manzur teased an elongated version of the piano intro to In Your Lap before the band launched into Everyday Is Like Sunday and the crowd combusted. This was the first in a run of five blistering tracks: Jack The Ripper was next, with the stage bathed in red light and smoke; then came recent single Spent The Day In Bed, quite a singalong for the crowd; this was followed by live favourite Speedway, which has lost none of its power; and then, the only Smiths track of the night, How Soon Is Now?, ending with drummer Matthew Ira Walker letting loose on the gong and timpani.

This might have been the obvious point at which to end the main set, but no. Who Will Protect Us From The Police? and I'm Not Sorry followed, before the band lined up to take a bow. Then they slipped off-stage, only to return minutes later, for Morrissey to say goodnight with "As always, be good to yourself, be kind to animals and look after each other. And that's it really." Moz had changed his shirt, donning a plain white number that, predictably enough, was thrown into the crowd at the end of the sole encore track, a thumping Irish Blood, English heart. As the band scooted off-stage, Jesse launched a plectrum into the crowd too, but not many noticed - they were too busy forming a polite but determined scrum around the shirt.

And then the house lights came up and it was all over. I have to tell you, I felt ecstatic. As I've already said, sitting so close to the action made a real difference and changed, for me, what might have just been Morrissey singing into Morrissey performing. And although I'd taken my proper camera, rather than rely on my phone, I came away feeling I wanted an actual souvenir, a keepsake more substantial than digital photographs ... so I bought a set of Moz lapel badges from the merch stall on the way out. As I trudged through a dark Hyde Park to Lancaster Gate tube, I reflected that this was, if not the best I had seen Moz, certainly in the top three.

Wow. Morrissey has been my favourite artist for a long time. But last night just exceeded my expectations by far. He played two of songs by The Smiths, firstly I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish. The vocals he has are just amazing, truly truly brillaint. He did How Soon Is Now and the atmosphere was incredible. He did some brilliant songs from his new album Low In High School my favourite being I Wish You Lonely. He also did Suedehead, Everyday Is Like Sunday and Jack The Ripper which were all absolutely fantastic. At one song there was a digereedoo being played and the rest of his band were very active with the crowd. Morrissey himself was lovely and charming and spoke to the crowd a lot. But the moment for me was Speedway. He played it before he came on for his encore, I was so so sure that he wasn’t going to play it and then I heard the Speedway noise. I lit up and just could not believe I was hearing my favourite song. He left some parts of the first verse blank and that was so amazing to hear the crowd sing. I cried throughout and cried after. He was so beautiful and it was the best experience of my life so far.

The venue itself was really good and where Morrissey was positioned was brilliant because we were stood on the side and still had perfect view. And I’m quite small.

Experimental rock duo KRISTEENYOUNG has been fired as the supporting act for Morrissey’s current U.S. tour. The dismissal stems from remarks made by frontwoman Kristeen Young on stage during Tuesday’s show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, according to a statement posted on the group’s MySpace page. “Unfortunately, the statement has been perceived as being profane (when, actually, one of the two words in question is a scientific term found in junior high, health class text books, and the other word, I feel most would agree, is lightweight slang) or defamatory. What I said was part of a thread of stage statements I made throughout our set,” writes Young. According to reports at morrissey-solo.com, some audience members were chanting “Morrissey” during Young’s set, to which she replied, “Morrissey gives good head, I mean, er, cunnilingus…” “[The statements] were metaphorical and overstated to make an artistic point,” writes Young. “The ‘offending’ statement, in particular, was in no way a literal statement, and was very much in keeping with the tone of my writing in general. I reach for beauty and intelligence in my lyrics, but try to retain a bit of the everyday in them. Maybe the statement was a bit TOO everyday. Maybe I misjudged… but I meant no harm. I love Morrissey with all of my heart, soul, body, spirit, to the core of my existence and always will.” KRISTEENYOUNG has supported Morrissey for many of the 170 shows on the tour since March 2006, including all U.S. dates in 2007. As of the Oct. 26 show, the new opener will be San Antonio rock outfit Girl In A Coma, named after one of the Smiths’ most famous songs. Representatives for Morrissey declined to comment on the change.

It promises to be an evening of mistletoe and whine. In one of rock’s unlikeliest couplings, Sir Cliff Richard has agreed to perform as Morrissey’s “special guest” at the former Smiths frontman’s New York show.

Sir Cliff, 73, the clean-living, pro-Royal, pillar of the entertainment establishment, will support the militantly-vegetarian, anti-monarchist Morrissey at the 19,000 capacity Barclays Center in Brooklyn this June.

Morrissey, 54, has signed up another UK singing legend, Sir Tom Jones, as the special guest for his Los Angeles show in May. In a statement, Morrissey said he was “honoured and thrilled” to have Jones and Richard on the bills.

The pairing with Sir Cliff intrigued Morrissey fans. Both singers left ground-breaking bands, The Shadows in Cliff’s case, to become iconic solo artists.

Their common thread appears to be Elvis Presley. Morrissey wrote in his autobiography of his fascination with the early rock n’roll pioneers and both quiff-bearing singers have aped Elvis’s visual style and rockabilly sound, during their career.

Morrissey and Cliff have displayed an enigmatic approach to their sexuality. The Mancunian singer and the deeply Christian Cliff were assumed to be celibate for long periods and though both have lived with male companions neither wishes their sexuality to be categorised.

Tom Jones will support Morrissey during his performance at LA's Sports Arena

They have their political differences however. Sir Cliff, the first rocker to be knighted in 1995, was delighted to perform at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012. Only this week Morrissey attacked the “thickwit” Prince William for hunting wild boar and stags in Spain.

Sir Cliff, who eats turkey and chicken as part of his Blood Type diet will have to abide by Morrissey’s “no meat” backstage strictures.

The pairing however offers Sir Cliff a late chance to break into the American market, a feat he still craves. Dismissed as an Elvis copyist in the early-60s, Richard never repeated his UK chart dominance across the Atlantic although Devil Woman made the US top 10 in 1976. Morrissey, who is making a comeback from serious illness and will release a new album this year, remains a huge live attraction across North America. The singers are believed to have bonded when they met at a hotel in Kent in 2011.

The pairing prompted widespread Twitter speculation. One tweeter predicted a seamless segue from Congratulations (Sir Cliff) into Margaret On The Guillotine (Morrissey). “I hope Cliff Richard does a cover of I Have Forgiven Jesus (a top 2004 top ten single for Morrissey),” wrote another.

Sir Tom, 73, a former friend of Elvis who ended a 42-year run of Las Vegas shows in 2012, confirmed his appearance. “I will be Morrissey Official's special guest at his show at the LA Sports Arena on May 10th,” The Voice talent show just wrote on Facebook. “We hope to see you there.”

The Cliff show was called “the oddest line-up in the history of gigs.” However that honour may still be reserved for the 1987 London show in which Einstürzende Neubauten, the German industrial group which employed jackhammers to drill through stages, invited rockabilly revivalists Showaddywaddy to be their support act.

The concerts are Morrissey’s first shows since being forced to cancel more than 40 dates after suffering a bleeding ulcer, Barrett's oesophagus and double pneumonia. Kristeen Young, a Missouri singer discovered by Morrissey, will join the legendary performers on both dates.

Earlier this week, Sunday Times writer AA Gill's caustic review of Morrissey's Autobiography was named the Hatchet Job of the Year.

The “40 Years of Morrissey” tour will see the artist perform songs by The Smiths — who released their first single, “Hand in Glove,” in May 1983 — and tracks from his solo career, which began with 1988’s  Viva Hate. Morrissey is rocking up to Manchester Arena on Saturday, along with his support act Damien Dempsey.

The gig, which takes place on August 20, will be Morrissey's only UK date and will see fans travelling from across the country to witness the former The Smiths frontman.

This Manchester performance will be Morrissey's first in the city since 2012. Fans were left disappointed after the singer avoided his home town in a string of UK tour dates in 2015.

So what can fans expect at the Manchester Arena show? Well, thanks to his gigs in Europe earlier this month, we can take a guess at what he's got in store.

From stage times to set list, support acts to pre-gig drinks - here's everything you need to know about Morrissey's gig at Manchester Arena.

Who is Morrissey's support act?

morrissey tour support act

Morrissey will be joined by special guest Damien Dempsey - the Irish singer/songwriter who fuses folk and contemporary lyrics to deliver heartfelt songs with cutting social commentary.

The 37 year-old fought as an amateur boxer in his early life, before committing fully to music, citing Bob Marley as a key influence.

He describes his style of music as 'some reggae, fuse it with traditional Irish music, add in rock and folk and put it all through a grounded working class worldly aware yet caring consciousness, and you’re some bit of the way there.'

What are the stage times?

Doors open: 6pm

Damien Dempsey: 7.30pm-8.10pm

Pre-show video: 8.15pm-8.45pm

Morrissey: 8.45pm-11pm

What will the set list be?

Based on Morrissey's gigs earlier this month, we predict...

You Have Killed Me

You're The One For Me, Fatty

I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris

How do I get to Manchester Arena?

Manchester Arena is located in Manchester city centre, on the corner of Trinity Way and Victoria Street, and adjacent to Victoria Station.

There is a 900 capacity multi-storey car park on site (£14.50 for 4-5 hours) and approximately 3,500 spaces within 10 minutes walk of the venue. Visit ncp.co.uk for advance booking and more information.

morrissey tour support act

The arena is well served by public transport from buses (bus stops on Victoria Station Approach, visit www.tfgm.com for more information), trains (the arena backs onto Victoria Station) and trams (Sudehill tram stop is well within walking distance) and there is a taxi rank outside Victoria Station.

Check your journey details before travel at www.metrolink.co.uk or follow @MCRMetrolink on twitter.

Where can I go for a drink before the gig?

Manchester Arena does have a bar on site, with a selection of draught beers, wines, soft drinks and spirits.

The Corn Exchange is an easy option for pre-gig eating and drinking. The new food hub is packed full of bars and restaurants, with a range of choices to suit any palate or price range.

Check out our guide to every restaurant in the Corn Exchange for further information.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, our tip would be the Northern Quarter, at the Tariff Street/Stevenson Square end, nearest to Piccadilly. There are some brilliant bars in that area serving a range of craft ales, wines and spirits as well as really great grub.

Morrissey Blames Support Act For Axed Tour

The former Smiths frontman has reportedly been unable to shake off a virus he says he caught from Kristeen Young.

Wednesday 11 June 2014 11:59, UK

Morrissey

Morrissey appears to be blaming his support act for a "horrendous cold" which has caused him to cancel the rest of his US tour.

The former Smiths frontman was taken to hospital after collapsing following his show in Boston on Saturday.

The singer announced the end of the tour, including his scheduled June 21 date with Sir Cliff Richard in New York, with "unimaginable sorrow".

A statement on his Facebook page said: "It is with great sadness that the remainder of the US Tour has been cancelled.

"The respiratory infection Morrissey contracted in Miami has worsened, and in the interest of making a full recovery, all further touring plans have been halted.

"Morrissey thanks his fans for their compassion, understanding, and well-wishes during this difficult period as he recuperates."

A message posted on True To You, a respected Morrissey fan site, said he fell ill after catching what Kristeen Young described as her "horrendous cold" in Miami.

"Morrissey received medical attention in Miami, and once again in Boston, but it was not enough to shake off the virus, the recovery time for which is too lengthy to meet the final nine shows of the tour."

Young was reportedly asked not to appear in a number of shows but has decided to leave the tour altogether.

When the date with Sir Cliff was initially announced, the Devil Woman singer admitted he could not name any Morrissey songs.

He said: "I couldn't tell you the titles. I've just googled him to see what kinds of crowds he plays to and what sort of show he did. I'm thinking, okay, it looks like a pop-rock show."

It is not the first time ill-health has forced Morrissey from the stage.

Last year he cancelled a string of US dates after suffering a bleeding ulcer, Barrett's oesophagus and double pneumonia.

morrissey tour support act

Morrissey has just announced two major outdoor summer shows: one in South London on July 9 and one in Leeds on July 12.

The former Smiths frontman will be performing at two of the country’s biggest outdoor venues, playing at Crystal Palace Park in London and Millennium Square in Leeds.

General tickets for the shows will go on sale on March 10.

In Leeds he will be joined by English rock band The Slow Readers Club, while his support act in London hasn’t yet been announced.

The Slow Readers Club Tweeted: “We’re buzzin to announce that we will be supporting Morrissey on 12th July in Leeds! We are huge fans of Morrissey and The Smiths and we can’t wait to share this experience with you.”

The outdoor dates are part of Morrissey’s 2023 European tour, which begins tomorrow in Paris. Morrissey will play in cities in France and Belgium before going on to play one date in London.

On March 19 he will be playing at London’s Eventim Apollo and there are still some tickets available for this performance for fans who cannot wait until July.

Last November the English singer-songwriter released single Rebels Without Applause which was his first new track since 2020. His last studio album, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, was also released in 2020. The album went to peak at number one in the UK ’s Independent Albums chart and number three in the UK Albums chart.

Morrissey currently has a new album in the works: Without Music the World Dies is set to be released in late 2023. Morrissey’s album Bonfire of Teenagers is also awaiting release. According to his website it is currently “available to the highest (or lowest)” bidder. The singer split from Capitol Records last December.

A statement on Morrissey’s website posted on February 13 said: “Capitol Records (Los Angeles) proudly promotes Sam Smith’s ‘satanism’; yet they consider the honest truth of Morrissey’s factual ‘Bonfire of Teenagers’ to be their biggest threat and they will not release it despite their contractual obligation and promise to do so.”

The satanism comment seems to be a reference to Smith and Kim Petras’ Grammys performance. During the performance of their hit single Unholy, Smith wore a top hat with horns and the stage was lit up with red lights and lined with fire. Dancers wore long black wigs and Petras sung her verse from inside a cage.

Republican senator Ted Cruz criticized the performance, tweeting, “This is… evil”. Elon Musk also commented on the performance, tweeting: “If that’s satan, we have nothing to worry about.”

According to Morrissey’s website, Morrissey was also dropped by label BMG Records in November 2020.

“BMG have appointed a new Executive who does not want another Morrissey album. Instead, the new BMG Executive has announced new plans for ‘diversity’ within BMG’s artist roster, and all projected BMG Morrissey releases/reissues have been scrapped,” said a statement on Morrissey’s site.

“This news is perfectly in keeping with the relentless galvanic horror of 2020,” said Morrissey on his website, “we would be critically insane to expect anything positive.”

The Standard has asked Capitol Records and BMG for comment.

Morrissey tickets will go on sale at 10am GMT here

Good morning. Polls are open and voting is under way. Every scrap of data, from the local elections, to the polls, to where the party leaders are campaigning, suggests the election is going to be a record-breaking triumph for Labour and an all-mighty disaster for the Conservatives.

Keir Starmer’s campaign has pushed the same message that has summed up essentially everything he has said since, at the absolute latest, Labour’s conference in 2022: what do we want? Change! When do we want it? Not at a pace that frightens middle England! How will we pay for it? With some small token tax rises on “the rich”!

While Labour can keep the letter of its manifesto promises without further, broader tax rises, I am dubious that it can keep the spirit of them. What people really hear when Starmer talks about “change” is: the UK’s public services, particularly the NHS, will improve and start to work properly again. Those aren’t problems that can be solved merely by ending the VAT exemption for private schools or changing the tax arrangements of wealthy non-domiciled residents.

But for Labour that is a problem for another day. In the here and now, the party is heading for a sweeping victory. While one reason for that is Starmer’s decision-making, not just in this short campaign but since becoming leader of the Labour party, another reason is the decisions taken by Rishi Sunak since he became leader of the Tory party, and his maladroit election campaign. Some more thoughts on that below.

Thanks for sending in all your election questions ahead of our live Q&A event for subscribers at 1pm tomorrow. Sign up here .

Spinners and losers

Will the Conservatives’ worst-ever general election campaign end with its worst-ever general election result? Lucy Fisher reveals that the party’s own internal projections show it is confident it will hold just 80 seats with a further 60 “in play” — meaning that in the best-case scenario, the party would return only about 140 MPs, a record-breakingly bad defeat. That is also the story in the various election models released by the pollsters.

You are seeing a snapshot of an interactive graphic. This is most likely due to being offline or JavaScript being disabled in your browser.

morrissey tour support act

The biggest reason why these projections are all over the place is that the Conservative party is polling like a third party, and when you have three parties (the Tories, the Liberal Democrats and Reform) each with a vote share of between 10 and 21 per cent, first past the post can throw up very odd results.

One detail I was struck by in Anna Gross’s excellent write-up from Sunak’s battle bus was that Sunak, who was already campaigning deep in Tory territory a week ago, is now campaigning in seats with even larger majorities. He visited Beaconsfield, where in 2019 Joy Morrissey got 56 per cent of the vote even against the independent candidate Dominic Grieve, the area’s popular MP with a national profile, and Banbury, which has had Conservative MPs since 1922.

The Tory party’s position has visibly deteriorated even since the local elections in May, which were very, very, very bad for the party. It’s tempting to blame that solely on the party’s disastrous election campaign and how Sunak has conducted it. But Sunak’s poor campaign is inseparable from how he has governed.

Take money. The party’s fundraising is lagging well behind the Labour party and previous election campaigns, which means, among other things, they are getting badly outspent in the digital advertising war.

morrissey tour support act

That lack of money means — as Anna reports — you have staffers griping that they have not been paid for six weeks because of the lack of funds, and many of the party’s communications lack professionalism and clarity.

(As someone who thinks an awful lot about what makes an email newsletter get redirected to someone’s spam folders, I’ve felt more than a twinge of professional pain looking at Tory party email communications, most of which look like Conservative aides are running some sort of challenge to hit as many marks of bad practice as possible.)

It’s true that it is harder for political parties to raise money when they are expected to lose an election. Modern requirements to disclose funding and its sources are a New Labour innovation, so we can’t say for certain how the Tory party’s fundraising today compares with 1964, 1970, 1992 and 1997, all elections when the Conservatives were expected to lose.

But we can compare it with 2001, when even the dogs in the street knew that Tony Blair was going to be re-elected. The Tory party under William Hague raised and spent more in that election than Labour and the Liberal Democrats. Blair was a more pro-business prime minister than anyone thinks Starmer will be. Perhaps if Sunak’s inner circle hadn’t had to spend quite so much time seeking donations in kind for the prime minister’s air and helicopter travel , and instead spent it seeking actual cash donations for the Conservatives, they wouldn’t be being out-fundraised now and their campaign would be better conducted.

A consequence of Sunak’s air travel is that he does not use the roads or rail that he oversees all that much. (While private companies provide the actual train services, they are so tightly regulated on everything from fares to timetables that the reality is they are run and controlled by the government.) I’m a great believer that leaders need to, to quote a phrase from this excellent 2022 profile of Mars’s outgoing chief executive , “eat their own dog food”. Ministers should use the public services they provide from time to time to get a worm’s-eye view.

Sunak’s lack of that view is surely part of why he has gone into an election with so little to say about public services, and with so many of them in a dire state. The backdrop of stories about the crisis in the UK’s prison system was always going to make this a very hard election for the Tories to improve their position. The NHS’s record-long waiting lists are, also, a huge problem for the government.

The lack of focus and grip on the condition of public services in England by the prime minister meant that he went into this election — in which he was always going to be targeting the wants and needs of asset-rich pensioners — carrying a threefold wound. The NHS, the part of the state that is used most by the older voters Sunak is trying to woo, is in a bad state of repair. The criminal justice system, whose failures those same people all read and hear about, is visibly in distress. And legal immigration is at record levels while Sunak’s own promise to “stop the boats” has not been kept.

Even if Sunak was the best and most charismatic campaigner the UK had ever seen, he was always going to struggle to win an election against that backdrop. But when you combine the prime minister’s shortcomings with the damage done to the Tory party’s reputation for economic competence by the Truss experiment, and the loss of goodwill caused by Boris Johnson’s lockdown-breaking parties, you have all the ingredients for a disaster for the Conservatives.

The only question is whether today will usher in a disaster the Tory party can recover from, or if we see the party suffer a blow so great that it permanently reshapes the whole of British politics.

Now try this

To all our readers running or campaigning in this election: I wish you good weather and well-behaved dogs. To everyone: I’m incredibly grateful for the election literature, direct mail (both via snail mail and email) and social media adverts you have sent me, all of which have sharpened my thinking and understanding of what is going on in this election.

I’ll be popping up on the FT liveblog from 10pm onwards. Until then I will be conserving my energy, aka lazing around all day listening to Shostakovich and playing video games. Inside Politics will be out at a slightly earlier time tomorrow morning to dissect the results.

A poll before you go: how many seats do you think the Tories will get? Vote here.

A statement from the former Smiths frontman himself added: “The thrill of this album was the speed under which it was recorded. Considering the knots of grief I had experience [sic] at the time, it made ‘Bonfire’ an incredible achievement for me.”

It has been almost a year since he announced ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers’, his first album since leaving his former label BMG . Last May, he said it would be “sold to the highest bidder,” however details of a label and firm release date are yet to emerge.
