Michelle Wright Shares Thoughts On Her First-Ever Co-Headline Tour ‘The Great Canadian Roadtrip’, Career Highlights + More
Kat Harlton
Photos provided via PR team
Acclaimed and award-winning country artists Doc Walker , Jason McCoy , and Michelle Wright , are excited to hit the road for their first-ever co-headline tour, The Great Canadian Roadtrip .
Kicking off in October and continuing into 2024, The Great Canadian Roadtrip Tour will be making stops across Canada, including performances in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba .
Part of the tour’s epic lineup is one of Canada’s most recognized and awarded female country singers, Michelle Wright . In 1992 she became the first Canadian artist in the modern era of country music to have a Top 10 hit in America, a #1 video on CMT‐USA, and to win a major US music industry award (the Academy of Country Music Top New Female Vocalist Award in 1992).
Michelle has graced concert stages around the world and accepted more than forty major awards, including her 2011 induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2022, she released her latest studio project, Milestone and celebrated the 30th anniversary of her hit album, Now & Then .
I had the opportunity to chat with Michelle about her musical journey so far, what fans can expect from The Great Canadian Roadtrip tour and more.
Kat: Can you share with us a bit about yourself and your music journey so far?
Michelle : I grew up on a farm in the small town of Merlin, Ontario. My mother and father were also country singers and musicians on a local level. They both had their own bands, and although they divorced when I was very young, I remember watching my mom going off to her gigs on the weekends, and if I was at my dad’s, he would be doing the same. This led me to my own musical journey, which started when I was 12 years old, playing the drums. Then I started playing guitar and played in a few bands in high school until I went on the road after college, where I played club six nights a week until I got my record deal with Arista Nashville. Needless to say, that was the break I needed. It allowed me to record several albums and travel the world sharing my music and having the time of my life.
Kat: You recently announced that you will be hitting the road with acclaimed and award-winning country artists Doc Walker and Jason McCoy for The Great Canadian Roadtrip Tour. How does it feel to head out on your first-ever co-headline tour with these amazing other artists?
Michelle : I’m thrilled. This is, in fact, my first ever co-headline tour, and to be able to do it with these guys is something I’m really looking forward to. We have shared the same stage many times throughout the years with our own bands, but performing together night after night on this tour is so exciting for me. Jason is now the newest member of the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame, which means we now have two Hall of Famers, and I predict future Hall of Famers Doc Walker on the same stage. It is going to make for a fantastic show.
Kat: What can fans expect from The Great Canadian Roadtrip Tour kicking off this October?
Michelle : This is going to be a very special night of music and storytelling. There will be hit songs that the fans know and love a few new songs, and a lot of fun.
Kat: In 2022, you released your latest studio project, Milestone and celebrated the 30th anniversary of your hit album, Now & Then. Can you share the inspiration behind Milestone and how your music has evolved since your first hit album?
Michelle : Writing and recording new music is always a part of my vision, and with the 30 th anniversary of the release of Now & Then approaching, which had my breakthrough single “Take It Like A Man” on it, we wanted to get back into the studio to celebrate. We re-recorded “Take It Like A Man” along with nine other songs. A few of the songs such as “Faithless Kind,” “Lovin’ This Day,” and “I’m With You” I have held onto for a number of years waiting for the right album to include them on, and this was it. I’m very proud of this record and so glad we recorded it. The fans have been celebrating along with me, and I really appreciate it. There has no doubt been an evolution in my music since I first started recording. I am recording more of my own songs, and my voice has evolved as I have grown as a singer and songwriter.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
Michelle : Songwriting is the most challenging part of what I do. I’m so thankful for the great co-writers I get to work with who help me put my thoughts and feelings down in song and not be too hard on myself. I always want to write and record the best songs I can.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?
Michelle : That’s a difficult question to answer. I have been fortunate to experience so many great moments in my career. Signing my record deal with Arista Nashville. That’s what really started it all for me after playing clubs six nights a week for nine years and hoping that would happen. Singing the Canadian anthem at the World Series. Doing the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Becoming a member of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame” Winning Top New Artist at the ACMs (Academy of Country Music) in America. Being named Female Vocalist of The Year at the CCMAs and the JUNOs. Being named Entertainer of the Year at the CCMAs.
What have I learned along the way? I could write a book with what I have learned along the way, but I believe it’s very important to surround yourself with good, honest, hard working people with integrity. I also think it’s important that you set the example of what you expect. You have to work hard and keep showing up. You also have to hang in there if you can through the peaks and the valleys because there will be both if you’re lucky. I’ve been able to do that with the support of my husband and good people on my team throughout the years who helped me keep my dream alive. In a lot of ways, I’m having the best time of my life when I am on stage with my band and doing the shows for the fans.
Kat: What else are you currently working on now, and what else do you have planned for the remainder of this year?
Michelle : I am on the road through the end of October. November and December is filled with songwriting appointments as we prepare to go back into the studio in January of 2024.

Michelle Wright's first co-headline tour coming to Chatham
Merlin native Michelle Wright has been performing on stage for more than four decades, but she will be experiencing a first when she heads out on tour in October.
Article content
Michelle wright's first co-headline tour coming to chatham back to video.
The country singing star will be joining the award-winning duo Doc Walker and two-time CCMA male vocalist of the year Jason McCoy as they embark on their first-ever co-headline tour dubbed the Great Canadian Roadtrip.
The tour kicks off Oct. 11 in Wingham with stops in Guelph and London, before arriving in Chatham on Oct. 14.
“I’m really excited about bringing my first co-headline show to the beautiful Capitol Theatre in Chatham, and look forward to seeing everybody,” Wright said in an interview with The Chatham Daily News.
The Canadian Music Hall of Fame member said she is well-acquainted with Doc Walker’s Chris Thorsteinson and Dave Wasyliw along with McCoy. Wright said she did some shows with Doc Walker in the summer and has known McCoy a long time.
The tour is going to see the performers on stage together for much of the show, she said.
“We’re going to perform on each other’s songs and other times just by ourselves,” Wright said.
“It’s going to be like a singer-songwriter vibe . . . where we’re all kind of hanging out and telling stories about our music and our songs,” she said.
“I feel like, on one hand, we’re drawing from a very similar audience but on the other hand, there’s no doubt we’re each going to be able to meet some new fans.”
Wright will be hitting the Capitol Theatre stage just days after being one among 12 local residents inducted into the Heroes Wall of Fame by the Chatham-Kent arts and cultural network on Oct. 11.
However, she won’t be able to be part of the induction event, because the Great Canadian Roadtrip tour opens the same night in Wingham.
“I did a little video to say thank you, because it’s really so special,” she said.
However, Wright added there might be something happening at the Chatham show so she can express her appreciation for the honour to the audience that night.
Although she’s performed across the world, Wright said, “I just love to get out there and do shows and certainly coming home to Ontario is always a thrill.”
Last year, Wright released her most recent album Milestone, which features new music and a remake celebrating the 30 th year of her smash hit Take It Like A Man being released.
“It’s great to share some of the new songs and just reminisce about all these years that I’ve been on the road and travelled the world,” she said.
The tour also will make stops in Brantford, Lindsay and North Bay in October before resuming early next year with numerous shows across Western Canada.
“It’s just so exciting,” Wright said of the tour.
She added the goal is to see it continue across Canada.
The Chatham show hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.chathamcapitoltheatre.com .

The Heart Radio host posted a gorgeous photo from his wedding day with Michelle to mark the day which was captioned: "Best 9 years of my life. Happy anniversary babe."
Michelle looked radiant in a bespoke white mermaid gown designed by Galia Lahav at Browns Bride which featured a Queen Anne neckline, lacy capped sleeves, and a fitted bodice.
The tulle mermaid skirt of her gown had an ethereal quality and the former Coronation Street actress upped the ante on the glamour front with a beehive half updo with long tumbling waves. Meanwhile, her new husband looked dapper in black tie.

The couple's famous pals flooded the comments with well wishes for Mark and Michelle on their special day. Happy Anniversary loves," penned fellow Corrie alum Catherine Tyldesley, while popstar and new dad Olly Murs quipped: "Still annoyed I never got the invite," with a winking face emoji.
Mark and Michelle's life together
The stars enjoy doing life together. Mark marked Valentine's Day in February with the sweetest snap from a private meal he enjoyed with his brunette bombshell bride.
"My Valentine, my love, thank you for being you," Mark captioned the post which saw Michelle in a slinky black shirt and rocking a killer high ponytail.
Life in Australia
The couple also jetted off to France in January for a picture-perfect skiing holiday with Mark's family. The Brassic actress looked so stylish in fitted skiwear featuring a chic puffer coat in a black and white houndstooth print.
Mark and Michelle have swapped the snow for the sun in recent weeks as the Our Girl star continues to work down under. They were seen visiting a winery in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales on one of Michelle's down days.
The actress has kept fans entertained with her off-duty style during her time in Aus. Michelle looked effortlessly cool in a pair of highrise denim shorts and a pistachio green crochet top as she enjoyed the April bank holiday from Bondi Beach.
We were also blown away by her catsuit moment where she rocked a slinky blue zebra print look with an oversized bow detail on one shoulder.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:
We walked over the bridge where I got a better photo of the Kremlin to enter metro station to travel the one stop back to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. This cathedral has a fascinating story. It is Moscow's largest Orthodox cathedral. It was built between 1839-1883 as a memorial to those who fell fighting Napoleon's army in the War of 1812.
At its entry, the marble walls are covered with inscribed names of those whose lives were lost. For more than a century, it was the city's largest single structure, dominating the city skyline. In 1931, a few seconds demolished what had taken 50 years to build, following Stalin's orders.
The marble from the church and other valued materials and objects were stripped and removed to be used elsewhere, such as for creating art in the Metro stations. During Khrushchev's time, one of the world's largest outdoor swimming pools was built.
In recent years, the decision was made to rebuild the Cathedral; this time it took only 5 years at a cost of $150 million. While the city provided most of the funding, when the decision to rebuild was announced, the rubles poured in from the general population. Once again, photos were not allowed, but my friend bought a booklet, and she kindly let me use it so you can see its elaborate interior.
What you probably DO know about this cathedral is that the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest concert inside the church in 2012, resulting in their arrest and jail time for 3 of its members.
After my friend selected her icon from the gift shop, it was time to bid our favorite Muscovite guide farewell. Our Moscow guide has restored my faith in her generation. So wise and compassionate she is. She was extremely perceptive about our preferences and needs.
As my friend noted to me last night after we got back to our room, there wasn't a problem our guide didn't solve with calm and timely effectiveness. After she presented both of us with gifts tied with satin ribbon, she walked us across the plaza in front of the cathedral to our waiting cab. She told my friend that she reminded her of her own "Baba" and that she would send my friend a picture of her to show the resemblance.
Even with this affection on her part toward my friend, I know our guide would have delivered the same excellent guide service to us, topped with abundant grace and sensitivity. These characteristics are a part of her inner soul. Our positive regard of Moscow is because of our guide.

Frank Lloyd Wright Houses: 9 Homeowners Share Their Honest Experiences Living in the Architect’s Creations
By Katherine McLaughlin
When I first moved to New York, I made just one stop while trekking from Indiana to Brooklyn: Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. Arguably the most iconic of Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses, I spent most of the tour admiring the cantilevered rooms, listening to the sound of the waterfall below, and wondering what it would be like to live in a home designed by the American architect . Though my experience was confined to a 1.5-hour tour, even in that short period, I felt like something shifted. I could only imagine what his work would inspire when it became part of one’s daily life.
For some people, this is their reality. Every morning and night, Wright’s work shelters and comforts them—and has profound impacts on the ways they view the world. Below, AD speaks with nine homeowners about living in one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses and how the experience has shaped them.
Goetsch-Winckler House (Okemos, Michigan)
When Nate Meyer was a child, his parents took him on a family trip through Pennsylvania. His dad—a longtime admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright houses—was particularly keen to visit residences by the architect while in the area and brought Meyer to Fallingwater. “That was a defining moment in my childhood,” he remembers. But after visiting Kentuck Knob, one of the Wright’s Usonian homes in Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania, Meyer’s fate was sealed. “I was asking my dad about this the other night, and he told me that after seeing Kentuck Knob, I said to him, ‘I have to live in a house like [that].’”
A historic photo from 1941 shows the Goetsch-Winckler House shortly after construction.
Last December, when he and his wife purchased the Goetsch-Winckler house in Okemos, Michigan, the proclamation came to fruition. “Call it a bucket list item, but I never really expected it to actually happen,” he says. Before the pandemic, he and his wife were living in San Fransisco, but, like many whose jobs became more flexible, they decided to leave the Bay Area to buy a home in a more affordable area. “I always knew ever since I was a kid that I really wanted to live in a home that was architecturally significant,” he says. They ultimately landed in Michigan in a home designed by Francis “Red” Warner (a student of Alden B. Dow, who was a student of Wright). They’d spent the past two years restoring the residence, but when the Goetsch-Winckler house came on the market, it was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. “The value of our primary residence had gone up significantly because of the work we’d put in, so we were able to leverage that equity into being able to make an offer,” he explains.
The interiors of the Goetsch-Winckler House today
About an hour and half from their primary residence, the Goetsch-Winckler house is now their weekend retreat. “It really feels like an active participant in nature; you’re not disconnected from it,” Meyer explains. “The feeling of the breeze, the sound of the birds, and this house also sits on top of the hill, so when you look out the southern windows, you almost feel like you’re just floating on trees.” He says they feel a bit like the Kaufmann family, who commissioned Fallingwater as their weekend getaway. However, the fact that it’s not their full-time residence may be preferable. “It was built in the 1930s and isn’t really made for the 21st century: It’s poorly insulated by today’s standard, laundry is a real challenge, there’s no air conditioning, the hot water pressure is quite low, and there’s bugs,” he explains. “I think if we lived here all the time, we might come to resent it. This way, we’ve struck a really great balance.”
Ultimately sharing the residence with others, which they often do through private tours, is his favorite part of owning the home. “We didn’t buy the home as an investment; we bought it because we love it,” he says. “We’re so fortunate that we get to experience it. I want others to feel this, to be inspired by it.”
The Parker House (Oak Park, Illinois)
The Parker House could be described as a Victorian house with a Wright flair.
Designed in a Queen Ann style, the Parker House might not look like a Frank Lloyd Wright design upon first glance. Crafted in 1892, it is one of the architect’s earliest creations, and one he worked on while still employed as a draftsman at Adler and Sullivan. Nonetheless, “There’s no escaping Wright’s presence,” says Glenn Burr, who owns the home with his wife, Katie Sweet. “There’s so much to come from his work, and you get to see and experience the very beginning.”
The couple and their twin children moved into the house in August 2022, after relocating from Dallas to be closer to family. “The moment I saw it, I thought, That’s a pretty slick house,” Sweet remembers. “The kitchen was lovely, there was a ton of light, and enough space for my family.” When the couple toured the home, their twins immediately began running around the third floor, which helped solidify Sweet and Burr’s interest more than the idea that it was a Wright design. “It just seemed like it was made for living,” Sweet adds. “It just so happened to be a Frank Lloyd Wright home.” They made an offer and purchased the property shortly after.
The Parker House was one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s earliest designs.
In the summer, the residence fills with light and warmth to such a degree that it’s almost sad to have to close the shades at night to get their young kids ready for bed. “At 8 p.m. darkness is only just starting to creep in and there are spectacular sunsets to the Northwest and you just get immersed in it,” Burr says. Understanding Wright’s lifelong quest to integrate homes with nature makes this quality even more outstanding. “Even at the early onset when he was still coming up, you can figure out who he was,” Sweet adds. “It’s almost like intel into his brain.”
One of the most special parts about owning the home is getting to meet others who are moved by Wright’s work. “We own a house that belongs to something much greater,” Burr adds. “It’s really fascinating to have people connect to your home from all over the world.”
Fredrick House (Barrington, Illinois)
It took the McArdles two years to restore the Frederick house.
When Dave McArdle and his wife, Joyce, first met in high school, their dates often consisted of touring Frank Lloyd Wright houses throughout Oak Park and River Forest. Later, when they eventually got married and were looking for a home to start a family in, they learned that Wright’s 1901 Frank Henderson house was for sale in Elmhurst, Illinois. Though it needed a lot of work, it was within the couple’s budget. “During the renovation, we discovered that there was a real need for a formal way that Frank Lloyd Wright homeowners could share their experiences and resources to maintain and restore their homes,” Dave says. “Along with other Wright homeowners, we founded the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy .”
The pair sold the Henderson house after five years and spent the next 20 or so years in a custom home designed by E. Fay Jones (a previous Wright apprentice) in Illinois, before eventually moving to Florida. Then, “One of our real estate colleagues in Illinois contacted us about a Wright home for sale in Barrington Hills, the Fredrick House. Our colleague had heard of rumors of plans to bulldoze it,” Dave says. Sensing another Wright opportunity, the couple bought the home in 2016 and spent two years restoring the dilapidating home.
The exterior of the Frederick house
“As lovers of architecture, Joyce and I always get a certain rush of excitement when we tour a great architectural home,” Dave says. “However, actually living in a work of art affects how you see and feel details on a daily level.” The couple say they constantly notice the way Wright played with light and it makes them look deeper at the element even when not in the home. “Since every element of a Wright home is integrated with all other building elements and with its surroundings, we notice other patterns and rhythms in life and are more aware of when things become ‘out of sync,’” Dave adds. However, the pair say that—aside from living surrounded in beauty—they appreciate the community they’ve met of fellow Wright aficionados. “Especially when [we meet] the few remaining original owners who met and worked with Wright. The stories of this creative genius are so fascinating.”
Frank J. Baker House (Wilmette, Illinois)
Inside the Frank J. Baker house
When Eric Bauer first toured the Frank J. Baker house in Wilmette, Illinois, he knew it would be somewhere he could spend the rest of his life. “I walked into the living room, and I said ‘Amy, I could see myself dying here,’” he tells AD. Built in 1909, the Prairie-style home represents one of Wright’s last remaining two-story homes with a T-shaped floor plan, a layout he was experimenting with at the beginning of the 20th century. Eric and his wife, Amy, had been looking for a new family home for them and their two daughters, and when the Wright home hit the market, the pair were immediately taken. Though they knew it would take work—which spanned a whole 18 months—the family has now been comfortably living in the home for two years.
For them, being in the house has changed the way they look at architecture and design. “There’s so much thought [from Wright] about the perspective of where you are in that room, and I never really appreciated that before,” Amy says. The home’s nuances that only become apparent after knowing it on such an intimate level—like the subtle changes in the views to the ways the light enters the room—have deepened their appreciation for the architect’s vision. “Wright was also so thoughtful about how people flowed into the house and guiding you naturally into the flow of the home,” Amy says. “We have that great compression and release style that he’s well known for, and it’s true that it guides you through the space.” In their home, the ceilings feel low as one walks into the foyer, but they quickly expand into a grand living room space. “And that sort of takes your breath away,” she adds.
The kitchen of the Frank J. Baker house
However, the pair say there is also a certain amount of pressure that comes with owning a Wright design. With the ultimate goal being to honor the architect’s vision, it’s easy to question whether the right decisions are being made, particularly as it comes to restoration and renovation. “I felt so nervous to open the house up originally, because I was afraid that people would have an opinion that we did something wrong,” Amy says. Ultimately, they’ve received positive feedback from guests and friends and family alike. “We sometimes open the house to tours, and people have been very complimentary, they love seeing a Wright house being used as it’s intended,” Eric says, explaining that there are photos on the wall and toys around the home. Of course, that only adds to the charm. “There’s spirit to the house,” Amy concludes.
J.A. Sweeton House (Cherry Hill, New Jersey)
In the dining room of the J.A. Sweeton house
To say Dan Nichols’ journey to owning a Frank Lloyd Wright house was written in the stars might be extreme, but it is certainly a full-circle story. When he was in grade school, his family would make shopping trips to Sears, passing a unique house on the way that Nichols always admired. “I thought it was the coolest-looking home,” he says, adding that, at the time, he didn’t even know it was designed by Wright. As he grew older and learned more about Wright, he only become more enthralled with the visionary’s work. So much so, that Nichols became an architect thanks to Wright’s influence and even proposed to his wife at Fallingwater. Still, “The idea of living in a Frank Lloyd Wright house, I just figured that the opportunity would not present itself,” he says. “I never really thought about it seriously.”
The exterior of the J.A. Sweeton house
But one day, that unexpected chance came. He and his wife had designed and built a home in central Pennsylvania, but decided to move closer to Philadelphia to be near aging family. It was at this time that the J.A. Sweeton house hit the market. “It was in a condition where we could afford it because it needed work,” he says. At 1,500 square feet, the Usonian home is the smallest Wright design in New Jersey, and he built it for a family that didn’t have a large budget (something the architect would often accommodate to). “It’s registered in more humble materials, but it has the spatial qualities of a Frank Lloyd Wright house,” Nichols says. “And I still feel the richness of that. ”
Though he says his home doesn’t require any more work than any other older house, a Wright design does ask for certain care. “You don’t come into a house like this and look at the latest thing in a magazine or HGTV and say, ‘I'm going to go do that to this house and paint everything gray or do a farmhouse kitchen,’” he says. “You try to live with and respect the character of the house and work with it rather than against it.”
Dorothy G. Turkel House (Detroit, Michigan)
The exterior of the Dorothy G. Turkel house
Dale Morgan and his partner, Norm Silk, were ready for a modernist change when they bought the Dorothy G. Turkel house 16 years ago. “We lived in a very traditional Mediterranean house,” Morgan says. “We decided that we wanted to do something contemporary and modern.” Coincidentally, two decades before being handed the deed, the pair had visited the Wright home and thought they’d never live in a property like it. “Tom Monaghan, [the founder of Domino’s Pizza,] owned the house, and we came over to tour it one night,” he says. “We were not impressed because it was in [a] terrible condition, the roof leaked…everything was wrong with the house, and we thought we would never live in a house like it.” But twenty years later, both the couple and the house had seemingly changed, and the timing was finally right.
“Living in it is wonderful,” Morgan says, adding that people are often surprised by how warm and inviting the space is. Still, true to Wright’s vision, the home’s constant dialogue with nature is the real allure. “The garden just pulls you out, it’s like a vacuum,” Morgan says. When guests come over, they’ll often tour the home and walk through each room, then immediately want to go sit on the terrace. Even when indoors, the outside is always calling. “We have a 500 small-scale windows, which are about a 24-inch square, and [they] control your vista and your sight line almost like a microscope,” Morgan says, adding that it provides endless opportunities to watch animals, birds, and plants grow and thrive. However, this also means that keeping the garden in near-perfect condition is almost as important as keeping the house in good shape. “Because the microscope is going everywhere, if there’s a dead plant or pieces of papers blowing around in the yard, you become totally, totally aware of it.”
The music room in the Dorothy G. Turkel house
One of the couple’s best moments in the house took place shortly after purchasing it, when the pair invited over friends and family for a party. “One of our neighbors came into the music room and tears just started brimming down her cheeks. She said it was the most beautiful space she’d ever seen,” Morgan recalls. The guest, who described herself as an atheist Jew, told the couple that the room made her feel like there must be a God. “It’s very interesting, the emotions that are evoked as people pass through different spaces in the house,” Morgan says.
Curtis and Lillian Meyer House (Kalamazoo, Michigan)
The Curtis and Lillian Meyer house is often classified as a hemicyle Usonian.
It took Doug LaBrecque 15 years to restore the Curtis and Lillian Meyer House, a hemicyle Usonian home just outside of Kalamazoo. “I always wanted to retire in Michigan,” he says. “I bought it in 2003, and it was affordable at the time.” He worked with Taliesin architect Lawrence R. Brink and Wright specialist architect John Eifler to refurbish the property. It paid off, as the home was recently awarded the Wright Spirit Award , which “recognizes efforts of extraordinary individuals and organizations that have preserved the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright through their tireless dedication and persistent efforts.”
In the kitchen of the Meyer house
“I was trying to restore it to its original splendor, and that goes with a lot of responsibility, both artistically and financially,” he explains. With most of the renovation work in the past, he says the home promotes a certain type of existence. “The house sort of tells you how to live,” he says. “I live differently when I’m there.” Though LaBrecque says he’s not a morning person, when in the Wright home, he finds himself getting up early. “The sun comes in sort of like a sundial, and I get up, have my coffee, sit and watch the birds. That’s my routine,” he says. “It makes you live alongside nature.”
Practically, the house doesn’t have much storage, so he says it nudges him to live more minimally and avoid collecting unnecessary items. However, like the Bauers, LaBrecque agrees there is a certain anxiety that comes with the responsibility of owning and honoring the late architect’s work. “You’re always worried about messing it up,” he explains. “You don’t want to screw it up.”
Laura Gale House (Oak Park, Illinois)
Inside the Laura Gale home
Andrea Kayne’s favorite memory of living in the Laura Gale House—which she bought with her now husband in 2017—was the day they got married. “It was just us, our kids, and my really good friend who married us, and I felt like the house was this container that just brought us all together,” she says. “There’s something about the windows and lights…it was super special.” Both Kayne and her husband, Andy Mead, had been previously married, and when looking to combine their families, the Laura Gale House felt like a picture-perfect scenario. “I remember Andy and I took a walk along the street and we passed the house and thought it would be a dream to live there.”
Lucky for them, the property hit the market soon after, and the pair were able to scoop it up. Located in the Oak Park neighborhood just west of Chicago—a unique enclave full of multiple Wright designs from the early years of his practice—the home is often regarded as one of his most influential Prairie-style houses. Featuring cantilevered balconies and roofs, Wright later described the home as a progenitor to Fallingwater . “We just loved it,” Kayne says. “There were rooms for all our kids—it’s actually much bigger than it looks on the street—and we loved the cantilevers.”
The Laura Gale home is often credited as a progenitor to Fallingwater.
Since moving in, the family feels at peace in the property. “We don't have any window treatments because the windows are so magnificent…and they really bring the outside in,” she says. “It makes you appreciate every kind of sky, every kind of light.” The drawbacks of the home are more minor inconveniences than major considerations. During bad weather, Kayne says she sometimes wishes they had a garage, or when the whole family is gathering it would be nice if there was a bit more elbow room in the kitchen. Of course, there’s also maintenance—but that’s true for any home. “I don’t mind the work,” she says. And though Wright houses are sometimes critiqued for not meeting the standards necessary for modern-day living, Kayne explains that the house is extremely comfortable for their needs. “I know people say [Wright’s] houses aren’t practical, but it doesn’t feel that way for us. We live in every square inch of the house, and it works really well.”

As Paramount’s British series “ A Gentleman in Moscow ” hopes to break into the highly competitive limited series races, the show has submitted for 20 Primetime Emmys , including lead actor for star Ewan McGregor and supporting actress for Mary Elizabeth Winstead .
Popular on Variety
McGregor has garnered five Emmy nominations throughout his career across multiple categories. Along with his lead actor (limited) win in 2021 for “Halston,” he’s been nominated in the same category for the anthology “Fargo” in 2017, in addition to guest drama actor for “ER,” narrator for “Highlands: Scotland’s Wild Heart” and as an executive producer last year for “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
Speaking to Variety about his prolific career in Hollywood , McGregor said, “I love making movies. I always dreamed of being a movie star. Then I was in movies. Every time I would sit there at the premiere, I couldn’t believe I was up there [on screen]. I still have that, I guess, but I don’t know what it means exactly.”
Winstead, who’s married to McGregor, also spoke candidly regarding the long search for a project for them to work on together after FX’s anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2018, saying, “I really didn’t expect it to be as great of a role as it ended up being. I just felt so lucky.”
