Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said, “Working on A Chorus Line in 2021 at Curve was one of those once in a lifetime moments, and to have another opportunity to re-visit our acclaimed production and share it with a wider audience is something we could never have dreamed of. All great shows need exceptional new artists to reinterpret them for the generation to enjoy and in Ellen Kane’s world class choreography, Michael Bennett’s extraordinary piece is invigorated through Ellen’s sensational work. Being able to share this production with audiences in Leicester once more, ahead of visiting the home of dance Sadler’s Wells and then on tour across the UK, reuniting Carly Mercedes Dyer as Cassie and Adam Cooper as Zach is the icing on the cake.”

A complete guide to all the songs in 'A Chorus Line'

Face the music and the mirror with Marvin Hamlisch and Ed Kleban's timeless score in A Chorus Line , which is playing at Sadler's Wells this summer.

Julia Rank

A Chorus Line returns to London this summer as part of a UK tour. Nikolai Foster’s fresh production features original choreography and stars Adam Cooper and Carly Mercedes Dyer in the key roles of director Zach and auditionee Cassie.

Marvin Hamlisch’s score is quintessentially ‘70s, yet timeless. The score features passionate solos and patchwork-like montage numbers. Hamlisch started his career as a rehearsal pianist on the original Broadway production of Funny Girl (he and Barbra Streisand became lifelong friends). He went to Hollywood, where he won Oscars for Best Song and Best Original Score for The Way We Were , starring Streisand.

A Chorus Line was Hamlisch’s first Broadway score, for which he won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Award. He is one of only two people to have achieved the feat of an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award) sweep and a Pulitzer (a record he shares with Richard Rodgers). His other Broadway scores include They’re Playing Our Song , The Goodbye Girl , and Sweet Smell of Success .

The witty, character-led lyrics are just as integral to the show's success. Record producer and teacher Ed Kleban was something of a one-hit wonder as a lyricist. The biographical musical A Class Act features a selection of his unproduced songs. Winners of the Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre include Jason Robert Brown, Robert Lopez, and John Weidman.

Revisit the songs or get to know them for the first time ahead of your visit. Each one really is singularly sensational!

Opening: I Hope I Get It

We’re plunged right into the action, a cattle call audition where instructions are barked by director/choreographer Zach: “Step, kick, kick, leap, kick, touch... Again!” The auditionees are filled with self-doubt as they try to keep calm and even momentarily let themselves hope for the best. All of them need this job and are prepared to dance their hearts out – they aren’t aspiring to be stars, just to land a chorus spot. At the end of the number, the surviving 16 form a line, holding their 8x10 headshot photos. This is no ordinary audition. In fact, it’s going to be more like group therapy as Zach questions them about their personal and professional lives.

I Can Do That

The first auditionee to be put under the microscope is Mike Costa, the youngest of a family of 12. Mike tells the story of how, as a small child, he watched his sister’s dance classes and when she didn’t want to go one week, he ran seven blocks to step in and never looked back (“And so I stayed the rest of my life / All thanks to sis / Now married and fat”). An upbeat tap number with vaudevillian elements, it’s probably the most positive song in the show.

At the Ballet

One of the line-up’s more mature members, outspoken 30-something Sheila is scolded by Zach for her prickly attitude. He asks her about her mother. She starts abrasively (“Daddy always said that he married beneath him…”) before she softens, remembering how “Everything was beautiful at the ballet…”. She’s joined by Bebe and Maggie, who have similar memories attending ballet classes “Up a steep and very narrow stairway / To a voice like a metronome… it wasn’t paradise but it was home.”

Bebe also had a complicated with her relationship with her mother, who told her she’d grow up to be very attractive: “Different, she said, with a special something / And a very, very personal flair”. Bebe wasn’t fooled – after all, “Different is nice but it sure isn’t pretty / Pretty is what it’s about”.

Maggie, the sweetheart of the group, explains that her parents had her in an attempt to save their marriage, but, unsurprisingly, it didn’t work. She took refuge in her fantasy life dancing around the living room with "an Indian chief" representing the father she never had. Her high E soars. You may well find yourself choked up.

Newlyweds Al and Kristine step forward. Poor Kristine is completely tone deaf and Al helps her through this fast-paced comedy number. It must be much more difficult than it looks to perform!

Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love (Montage Part 1)

A montage that explores the messy experience of puberty – everyone has something to say! Connie never grew beyond 4-foot 10-inches and Paul had to keep his sexuality a secret. Like the opening number, it melds together song, dialogue, and dance in an organic whole.

Nothing (Montage Part 2)

A zinger of a monologue sung by the witty Diana Morales. Transferring to the High School for Performing Arts to pursue her acting ambitions, she encounters pretentious drama teacher Mr Karp, an adherent of Method Acting. Diana does not get along with this style of teaching (“So I dug right down to the bottom of my soul to see how an ice cream felt / … And I tried to melt”) and is bullied by Karp and the other students. Eventually, she goes to church to pray to the Virgin Mary, who encourages her to find another plan.

Mother (Montage Part 3)

More mother issues, featuring lovely melody for Maggie singing to her absent mother. And in terms of teen crushes, Robert Goulet is out, Steve McQueen in.

Give Me the Ball (Montage Part 4)

Greg recalls awkward incidents at school. Ritchie recalls that he thought he would become a kindergarten teacher. Adolescence is over and life has begun?

Dance: Ten; Looks: Three

Most of Val’s solos in the montage numbers concern her lack of development in the chest area. She’s taken action by undergoing plastic surgery (“T--s and a-- / Bought myself a fancy pair / Tightened up the derriere / Did the nose with it / All that goes with it” and suddenly she’s getting a lot more interest, professionally and personally. She’s certainly a convincing saleswoman. This number is irresistibly catchy and upbeat in tempo, but pretty bleak in sentiment – that’s what makes it so clever. The objectification of the female body and the pressure to conform is an all-too timeless theme, and it will be interesting to see how this number is staged in the new production.

The Music and the Mirror

We haven’t mentioned Cassie yet, Zach’s ex-girlfriend and the seventeenth candidate. Having had some success in featured roles but damaged by a disastrous attempt to break into Hollywood, she’s returning to her roots, trying for a chorus job for which Zach deems her unsuited – she’s too good and too much of an individual. Finally getting a chance to speak to him one to one, she starts gently but becomes increasingly assertive. A true tour de force of solo song and dance.

The hopefuls are put through their paces with the show-within-a-show’s key chorus number, a celebration of the unseen and unnamed leading lady’s talents (“One smile and suddenly nobody else will do…”). The instructions going around in their heads are vocalised – all the details that make the chorus’s contribution appear effortless.

What I Did for Love

While practising the tap combination, Paul falls and suffers a career-ending knee injury. The dancers talk about what they plan to do when they too can no longer perform. Diana sings the show’s poignant and philosophical 11 o’clock number, in which they conclude that “the gift [of dance] was ours to borrow” for the time granted to them, and they have no regrets for pursuing this difficult and often punishing vocation as they head towards tomorrow.

One (Reprise)

The final eight are selected. Each cast member get their moment in the spotlight as they take their bow. Their individual rehearsal outfits are replaced with identical gold costumes as they form a seamless ensemble celebrating the unseen stars. A bittersweet finale indeed.

A Chorus Line

The first London production of the iconic musical 'A Chorus Line' since the original 1976 Drury Lane production is dazzling audiences at the London Palladium. Based on the 2006 Broadway revival, director Bob Avian and choreographer Baayork Lee recreate Michael Bennett's timeless story of a group of dancers' struggle to gain the chance of a lifetime - the chance to dance. As each dancer steps up to the line, their individual story is told in an honest and genuine fashion, and the audience see the hope and desperation as their lives are laid bare for all to see. John Partridge, Leigh Zimmerman and Scarlett Strallen star in this award-winning revival production that is not to be missed.

What the audience said…

Scarlett Strallen's performance was simply outstanding. In 50 years of theatre going, I feel she is one of the greatest stars on the British stage. A true leading lady who has taken the West End and Broadway by storm! Enough said....

Captivating from start to finish. The band are superb, the choreography is stunning - Never before have I been to the theatre and believed what I saw so wholly - the cast's portrayals were raw, passionate and real, in particular Zimmerman and Strallen. 2 hours of theatrical brilliance - the most powerful and compelling musical I've seen.

Simply stunning. This was by far one of the best things I have seen in the West End this year. I loved the energy of everyone onstage and was blown away by the simplicity. Some incredible performances, everyone worked together and pulled it out of the bag. Have already booked to see it again!

I did enjoy this musical and it was nice to see something a bit lower key at the London Palladium. There was very little set, but the show didn't really need it. The band were excellent and the whole show was loud and exciting.

Brilliant show - most of the cast were good but I did feel a little bit let down by Strallen in the role of Cassie. Her acting was quite wooden and you didn't believe in what she was doing. Jon Partridge gave a good performance. Shame he wasn't actually onstage more!

This show wasn't really what I was expecting - lots of dancing but actually I did enjoy it. I'd make sure you go to the toilet before as it is quite long with no break!

This was a really good show. I enjoyed seeing the musical and thought it was a nice change to the other shows currently in the West End. Some of the cast were excellent, but some were not as vocally strong. The dancing was excellent. Would recommend this show to everyone!

I went to see it last week and it was fantastic! All members of the cast are incredibly talented. I would recommend everyone to go and see it!

critic-star-2.0

Wasn't that impressed really. Totally overpriced. John Partridge was not in it when we attended either. Been to the Westend a number of times and this is rated one of the least value for money.

critic-star-1.5

Saw this last week. Hated it. Boring. Would have left at intermission but they don't have one. Wished I could get my money back.

Saw this yesterday and loved it, can't stop singing the songs. Going to watch the DVD again today.

Saw it this evening, first time I'd seen the production- the cast are fantastic, with a stripped back feel it was really different.. Enjoy!

Theatre promotion, review: a chorus line. curve leicester.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

To say that Curve’s production of A Chorus Line is just ‘ One Singular Sensation’ is numerically wrong and definitely reductive. As a fabulously redefined stage production of a Broadway and International musical theatre classic, this Made at Curve staging and presentation has brought together much more than one solitary singular sensation. It is plurally sensational: namely everything from the stellar cast to the unique direction of Nikolai Foster, incredible stage design by Grace Smart and the stunning choreography by Ellen Kane. Then there’s the fabulous sound design by Tom Marshall and the wow wow wow lighting design of Howard Hudson. Oh boy, that phenomenal lighting design by Howard Hudson! ‘One moment in his presence and you can forget the rest, for this guy is second best to none, son.’

But then, returning to the original argument, if we consider the number one and its other broader interpretation as a symbol of unity then this show embraces that notion of being joined together not only in the dancers’ stories unfolding on stage but that all important human and, very often emotional, warm mutual invisible but palpable embrace of audience and theatre creatives backed up by everyone working backstage and FOH at Curve. Without that, where would we be? And this production demonstrates that love and unity in spades.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

The main cast is comprised of the brilliant triple threat talents of Emily Barnett-Salter (Shelia Bryant), Ronan Burns (Bobby Mills), Adam Cooper (Zach), Bradley Delarosbel (Gregory Gardener), Carly Mercedes Dyer (Cassie), Lizzy-Rose Esin-Kelly (Diana Morales), Andre Fabien Francis (Ritchie Walters), Beth Hinton-Lever (Bebe Benzenheimer), Joshua Lay (Al Deluca), Kanako Nakano (Judy Turner), Jamie O’Leary (Mark Anthony), Tom Partridge (Don Kerr), Rachel Jayne Picar (Connie Wong), Redmand Rance (Mike Costa), Ainsley Hall Ricketts (Paul San Marco), Chloe Saunders (Val Clarke), Charlotte Scott (Maggie Winslow), Taylor Walker (Larry, Zach’s assistant), Eamonn Cox (swing), Hollie Smith-Nelson (swing) and Marina Tavolieri (swing). In this evening’s performance the ‘young ensemble’ are played by team Hamlisch.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

For what has always been considered an empty stage show with some mirrors and a white line running the length the stage, this spectacular Curve production uses the full width of its massive main house stage and even expands into the wings and part of the auditoria. This production of A Chorus Line also takes advantage of the height of the stage by bringing in and down banks of lighting used to incredible creative effect. The musically superb band under musical director Tamara Saringer are hidden on stage for most of the show and like in Curve’s previous Christmas show, West Side Story, they are briefly revealed to audience during one of the numbers.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

Under Nikolai Foster’s bold vision and direction and Ellen Kane’s inventive and original choreography this dazzling production takes (and keeps to some degree) the idea of the ‘Broadway gypsy dancers’ coming forward from their straight line up to tell and sing their anecdotal stories and then splinters and reconstitutes itself in all kinds of directions. So now, that theatrical iconography of A Chorus Line is reinvented to create a whole, brand new, and exciting way of experiencing the show. Many of the recognisable numbers such as ‘I Hope I Get It’, ‘At The Ballet’ and ‘What I Did For Love’ get instant rounds of applause for their performances and stage presentation. The finale blows the roof off the theatre in ways that will make your jaw drop and your eyes well up with tears of appreciation for the genius of theatre craft both of song and dance and gobsmacking technical chutzpah. Curve have a huge Christmas hit on their main stage and you don’t have to travel to Broadway to see it.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

A Chorus Line was developed around 1975 from US show dancers’ own stories of difficult childhoods, their struggles to make it in show biz, obsessions with dance, coming to terms with their sexuality, alcoholic parents, the pleasures and humiliations that greeted them as they tried to realise their dreams of finding work in a tough and beleaguered mid-seventies’ Broadway and more. Also, A Chorus Line was the first Broadway musical to deal matter-of-factly with homosexuality. This is seen and heard in a few dancer revelations tonight but none so poignantly as delivered by Ainsley Hall Ricketts as Paul San Marco. You can’t hear a pin drop during Hall Ricketts’ tremendously moving monologue.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

This new vision of Curve’s A Chorus Line has brought in fresh ways on concentrating on the actor’s anxieties and autobiographical stories by filming them up close and live so that we see their faces enlarged on the back of the stage. This clever camera led idea, used economically and person specifically, has the effect of visually illustrating to us the grilling of the dancers and the exposure of their inner selves as either confident, or otherwise, in tense dance audition situations. Sometimes this also leads to hilarious confessions blurted out in desperation.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

In a show, that definitely deserves a re-visit or two in order to fully take in the myriad of things happening on the stage, there are some stand -out performances from the stunningly talented cast. They are all so engagingly and energetically expressive in their acting and dance work, it’s a hard job to single anybody out. All the actor’s characters and pairings come across as very well drawn and authentically performed. However, the stand-outs, for us, are Carly Mercedes Dyer as Cassie, Beth Hinton-Lever as Bebe Benzenheimer, Adam Cooper as Zach, Kanako Nakano as Judy Turner, Emily Barnett-Salter as Sheila Bryant, Lizzie-Rose Esin-Kelly as Diana Morales, Ronan Burns as Bobbie Mills, Charlotte Scott as Maggie and Chloe Saunders as Val Clarke.

Edd Lindley’s costume designs are an innovative nod to the 1970s and yet current. His designs have deliberately moved away from the familiar A Chorus Line parade of leotards and leggings and leg warmers.

a chorus line uk tour 2022

The original 1975 game-changing production of A Chorus Line was conceived, choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett. The show book was by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and co-choreographed by Bob Avian. If they could see this Curve production here in the cultural heart of Leicester their collective creative hearts would burst with joy. It’s totally absorbing and the audience leave the theatre tonight exhilarated after giving the production a thoroughly well-deserved full house, everybody standing – standing ovation. They’ll be singing and dancing all the way home. Well, we were!

“Love’s what we’ll remember. Kiss today goodbye and point me t’ward tomorrow…”

The history-making sensation returns to the Mac-Haydn stage! Winner of 9 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, A Chorus Line explored the realities of life as a professional theater dancer in an entirely new way, redefining the parameters of musical theater forever.

Read the Reviews

A Chorus Line takes us inside the pressure cooker of a final casting call for a new Broadway musical. Our dancers are asked to give everything they have in the hopes of realizing the dream they have worked their whole lives for. This turbulent, true-to-life depiction of the performer’s experience is the ultimate love letter to the stage, highlighting the personal hardships, triumphs and failures that surface when we pursue our aspirations.

Coming to the Mac-Haydn stage for only the third time, this A Chorus Line will be an experience like no other. Intimate and visceral, you will feel like part of the audition. Featuring such classic hits as “What I Did for Love,” “One,” “I Hope I Get It”, this masterpiece of live theater will resonate with anyone who has ever pursued a dream, and inspire those who have not.
