The best cycling routes in Mallorca

A paradisiacal island sunning itself in the Balearic Sea, you’ll soon find that cycling in Majorca is one of the best ways to explore. With a mountainous eastern coast, you can put your thighs to the test and climb sweeping switchbacks with immense sea views. After a pause at the top to mop the brow and glug some water, your descent will be exhilarating to the max.

An utterly fantastic place for two-wheeled explorations, cycle routes in Majorca can be flat, steep and everything in between. Kid-friendly trails wind along stunning coastlines with ample beaches and ice cream stops. Much of the terrain inland has only low hills, providing the perfect balance between climbs, views and descents that won’t be obstacles for most keen riders.

With an unbeatable climate, clear seas and innumerable trails, cycling in Majorca is a slice of paradise.

Plan. Save. Navigate. Your best adventures await.

Cyclists have become an ever-increasing sight across this Mediterranean island’s diverse landscape. There are two very good reasons; bike rides in Majorca come in every shape and size, and the weather is astounding all year round.

Never been on two wheels before? You can learn on flat, peaceful trails. Took home the gold at the last Olympics? You’ll find ideal routes for your ability. On Spain’s second-largest island, the cycle routes in Majorca can be traffic-free dirt trails or smooth tarmac switchbacks where drivers are respectful and used to hordes of cyclists. After all, this is an island where pro teams train.

In the north, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are a haven if you’re after serious climbs, views and descents. The very north has spectacular routes including riding up to Cap de Formentor, with its lighthouse and phenomenal vistas. Cycling in Majorca truly comes into its own as you ride through the mountains along the coast and you can always end the day at the beach for a well-deserved rest.

When flatter trails call, you’re well catered for. Much of Majorca’s interior is low-lying and the central plain from Alcudia Bay to Palma makes for wonderful, gentle adventures.

Cycle through history

If you’d like to see fascinating historic sites as you pedal your merry way around Majorca, you’ll certainly be pleased. With 14th century Bellver castle, 13th century Santuari de Lluc monastery and many extraordinary caves, to name a few, there are plenty of historic objectives to swing by.

Preparing for Majorcan cycling

Majorca has an exceptional climate for cycling. Mild winters and warm shoulder seasons bring cyclists in their droves to explore and train on the island. Summer gets hot, but with a sea breeze, morning and evening rides can be wonderful. The most popular cycling season is March to May. Autumn has lovely temperatures but sees more rain.

Always remember to take good water supplies with you, as the sunny island can quickly lead you into dehydration. Sunscreen is another must, including one small enough to carry. Snacks are always beneficial, but you’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants filled with glorious seafood, lunches and ice cream to keep you going.

Our Tour recommendations are based on thousands of activities completed by other people on komoot.

Day 1: Palma de Mallorca Arrival Day Accommodation: Hotel BQ Augusta

Arrival at leisure in Palma de Mallorca.

Day 2: Palma de Mallorca – Ses Salines Route: 63.4 km/39.4 miles Elevation: +367 m/+1205 ft Accommodation: Hotel Ca’n Bonico

Today, you’ll enjoy a beautiful flat ride to warm up your legs!

You’ll begin by cycling out of Palma and around the bay of the same name, and continue towards the southern part of the island, cycling through bucolic agricultural scenery, dotted with historic mills and farms. As you reach the sea, you’ll enjoy dramatic coastal views, historic lighthouses and military outposts, and plenty of opportunities to cool off on white sand beaches.

If you fancy a bit more cycling once you arrive in Ses Salines, you can visit the famous Platja Es Trenc, a beach renowned for its crystalline waters, or the Cabo Salinas lighthouse for fabulous ocean views.

Day 3: Ses Salines – Artà Route: 80.1 km/49.8 miles Elevation: +925 m/+3034 ft Accommodation: Hotel Casal d’Artà

On today’s route, you’ll enjoy hilly roads with very few cars, lovely landscapes and indigenous Mediterranean forests, as well as your first Mallorcan switchback climb!

You have two potential routes for today: along the cliffs of the coast, or through the flowery fields of inland Mallorca.

Just beyond the town of Felanitx, you’ll face a challenging climb up to the Sanctuary of San Salvador. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over southern Mallorca and the Balearic Sea!

If you would like to extend today’s route once you arrive in Artà (or the start of tomorrow’s route), you can add a beautiful extra climb of about 9km up to the Ermita de Betlem for fabulous views over the Bay of Alcúdia.

Day 4: Artà – Port de Pollença Route: 42.4 km/26.3 miles Elevation: +274 m/899 ft Accommodation: Hotel Mar Calma

Today, you’ll explore the authentic Mallorcan inland before cycling along the beautiful Bay of Alcúdia, before reaching the ancient walled city of the same name. We highly recommend a stop here to take a stroll around the picturesque old town, and enjoy a fantastic lunch.

From Alcúdia, you’ll cycle along the Bay of Pollença before arriving in the popular seafront town.

Day 5: Cap Formentor Loop Route: 38.5 km/23.9 miles Elevation: +1280 m/4199 ft Accommodation: Hotel Mar Calma

Built by Italian engineer Antonio Parietti, the winding road that runs between Port de Pollensa and Cap Formentor commands astounding views at every turn. The challenging route and typical Mallorcan switchbacks are a cyclist’s dream. Away from the port, you’ll discover a rugged wilderness of great natural beauty. On a clear day, you might even see Menorca, some 40km in the distance.

Optionally, you can consider doing this ride in the evening, to watch the sun set into the ocean from the lighthouse.

Day 6: Port de Pollença – Port de Sòller Route: 89.8 km/55.8 miles OR 47.6 km/29.6 miles Elevation: +2157 m/7076 ft OR +1090 m/3575 ft Accommodation: Hotel Aimia

The pure climbing starts today! The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sa Calobra and its fabulous switchback road, one of the most beautiful routes on the whole island, prove why Mallorca is a superlative cycling paradise. Enjoy an adrenaline-fulled 10km of descent down to the crystalline waters of Sa Calobra beach. The road includes more than ten 180º turns, and even a full 360º turn known as the nus de sa corbata (the necktie knot!), in which the road passes underneath itself!

From Sa Calobra beach, you can either cycle back up to the top and continue on to Port de Sòller by bike, or take a boat from Sa Calobra to Port Sòller (boat tickets priced separately; please consult us for options).

Day 7: Port de Sòller – Estellencs Route: 43.8 km/27.2 miles Elevation: +1100 m/3610 ft Accommodation: Maristel Hotel and Spa

Today you will cycle along a coastal road with beautiful panoramic views of the north coast of Mallorca. Every village along the way is worth a stop for the different perspectives that they offer of the spectacular Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range.

Day 8: Estellencs – Palma de Mallorca Route: 74 km/46 miles Elevation: +1664 m/5460 ft Accommodation: Hotel BQ Augusta

Your final ride of the week is a stunning combination of coastal and inland cycling. The route takes you through the charming little villages of south-west Mallorca. We recommend the diversion to the picturesque coastal village of Saint Elm, a lovely spot with crystal clear water, surrounded by lush countryside.

Day 9: Palma de Mallorca Departure day

After breakfast, our tour will come to an end.

We hope you had a great time discovering the beautiful island of Mallorca.

If you need any help with your onward plans, please feel free to contact our Bike Spain Tours team!

Hotel Can Bonico

mallorca spain bike trips

This hotel is located in the center of the town of Ses Salines, in the South of Mallorca. It is a typical Majorcan Stately house built in the thirteenth century.

Hotel Ca’n Bonico has been carefully converted and renovated into a luxury hotel. It was very important for us the fact of preserving the original structure and details. For example, the tower from the thirteenth century, which was used as a prison, has been turned into a private library. Ca’n Bonico is still owned by the Bonet family, direct descendants of the first owner, a noble knight who fought beside King James I

Hotel Casal d’Artà

This cozy hotel, with newly and brightly designed rooms at the traditional Majorcan village house, is located in the heart of Artà’s historical city .

All rooms have a bathroom with bathtub or shower, WC and bidet, heating and air conditioning, minibar and a safe, some rooms have tv. The sunny rooftop terrace has a stunning view all around to the castle of Sant Salvador and over the roofs of Artà even until the coast of Majorca’s northeast. +More Info

The trip, with the routes made by you, exceeded our expectations, the places and roads are spectacular, mixing the coast and the cities, with roads and places with a lot of tradition. The most spectacular was the Sa Calobra stage through the Serra de Tramuntana, it was spectacular, because we had a huge storm with rain and wind in the sector of Puig Mayor, which we will not forget. Very remarkable weather, despite the heat, the breeze and the effect of pedaling does not feel or make it unpleasant.

Camille Mack-Mumford

The route is very clear, and that’s the most important credit. Suggest to add more sightseeing tips and restaurants. The bikes were great! Very easy to paddle and the seats are comfortable. It was tough to ride in the heat everyday. But in the end of the day, there was always a perfect beach in the end of the day waiting for us to dive in. That was so awesome. Also, Majorcan people are generally very friendly and warm, we received lots of help on the way. I’d like to thank Bike Spain staffs, Edgar and Sabela, always giving us the help In time. A great memory.

Cycling in Mallorca: where to go, what to ride

Heading to cycling's most popular island? Here's all you need to know...

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Image shows riders cycling in Mallorca

Why go to Mallorca?

  • When to go and how to get there
  • What to take?
  • Where to stay
  • Where to ride

Mallorca is, along with other Spanish hotspots like Girona , the Costa Blanca and the Canary Islands one of the go-to destinations for riders looking for some sun and smooth roads for a cycling holiday for spring riding abroad.

A frequent training camp base for Ineos Grenadiers , Astana , Canyon/SRAM and - whilst we're at it - most of the pro peloton at one time or another, the Balearic Island is a popular host for amateur clubs and teams as well.

Spring is the most popular time to visit, and in the months between February and April it's near impossible to ride on the island without coming across several miniature pelotons made up of pros, amateurs or groups that are somewhere in the middle.

Considering a visit? Here's what you need to know...

Firstly - if you need convincing as to why you should make Mallorca your destination of choice, it's because you can almost always expect a trio of good weather, mixed terrain and (largely) understanding drivers.

When to go to Mallorca for cycling and how to get there

With its Mediterranean climate, Mallorca gets hot mid-summer. That means the best times to visit are spring, when many riders are chasing sun as they look to up their form for summer and shake off the winter doldrums, or autumn when they're hoping to stretch their summer season by a week and hold onto their form going into winter and the unenviable mix of wet roads and the turbo .

In March and May, maximum temperatures vary from 17 to 22°C, then 23 to 19°C in October and November. December, January and February are cooler but still see highs of around 15°C - though this is variable; the island has seen snow in these months  so planning your trip in the off-season proper is a bit of a risk.

cycling in mallorca

Average rain days a month vary from one to seven through the year, so though you might see a couple of wet days, it shouldn't last too long.

If you'd like to time your visit to coincide with an event, then check out the Mallorca 312 sportive .

This epic sportive is an annual affair which takes place in April each year. Initially, it circumnavigated the coastline - but the route has since been changed to allow for closed roads. You can ride 312km or 167km, and this event sees the island pretty much taken over by cyclists. It gets booked out early though.

For travel, the capital Palma houses an airport - flight times from the UK are usually around two and a half hours.

Palma is about 60km from Pollença, where a lot of riders base themselves. When travelling in small groups, we have typically hired a car, whilst on large group excursions we'd organise a transfer with bike box trailer.

What to take for cycling in Mallorca?

The first question is ' do I take my bike or hire one '? Either option will work - there are plenty of hire services and if you're not staying long this can work out cheaper than paying for the carriage of a bike box by an airline.

It cuts out the hassle and worry, too - but does mean you'll be riding an unfamiliar machine, although you may be able to hire that dream bike that you've always wanted to ride.

If you do take your own bike, pack shoes and pedals in your hand luggage so you can hire if there's any delay in your bike arriving - this can happen when there are many bikes on one plane (can, not should).

In terms of kit, check forecasts of course, but bear in mind that it'll be chillier on the top of climbs and on descents. Essential items include all manner of warmers ( leg, knee , arm ), a gilet and packable jacket which will provide you with an extra layer for descents and cafe stops. Check out our ten tips for cycling in the mountains .

Some rides include tunnels - so be sure to pack ideally a set of lights and at the least a rear.

Where to stay when cycling in Mallorca

The longest route around the entire perimeter is 312km - North to South is 75km and East to West is 100km.

Most riders visiting the island will have the opportunity to explore a pretty hefty percentage of its attractions during their stay. However, where you choose to base yourself will of course influence your riding itinerary.

The vast majority of cyclists set up camp in the Northern coastal towns of Port de Pollença and Alcudia.

The key attraction of this area is that it sits close to the edge of the Tramuntana Mountains - the highest point of which is the tip of Puig Major. Whilst evidently there are plenty of adjacent climbs, the area also offers flat roads along the coast and some undulating countryside routes as well.

Whilst Port de Pollença houses the base of the famous 'lighthouse ride' to Formentor, Alcudia can provide some historical ambles around town to explore the 14th century walls. The two are separated by around 10km of sea front so it's not much odds.

An alternative base is Port Soller, which is a little further down the coastline. The busy town can provide plenty of restaurants and a more energetic evening vibe. However, nestled in a bay, the only way out is to ascend one of three climbs - Col de Soller, for example, is 7.4km and six per cent or you could opt for Puig Major at 13.9km and six per cent. No day will start easily.

Areas to avoid are dotted along the South coast - such as Magaluf, Palmanova and s'Arenal. These areas host quite a different holiday experience, and you might struggle to get enough sleep to facilitate your next day's riding plans.

Since Mallorca is an island frequented by cyclists, you won't encounter any struggles finding a hotel or apartment that is bike friendly. Many advertise their bike lock ups, and even work with local shops to provide hire options.

CW has enjoyed many stays at the Duva Hotel, in Port de Pollença, which provides a hearty buffet breakfast and dinner, locked bike cages and a spa with indoor and outdoor pools (the later is ideal for a make-do post ride ice bath).

Similarly, you're not going to struggle finding a bike shop, hire bike or tour guide in Mallorca. There are a fair few providers offering package deals that include board, food and led rides, some with coaching and planned intervals thrown in too if you're training with a specific purpose.

Where to ride in Mallorca

The key attractions in Mallorca are of course the climbs - but you might want to add in a couple of flatter days, too.

Since Port de Pollença and Alcudia are the most popular towns for cycling bases, we've started most ride distances and routes from there.

Sa Calobra is probably the most famous ascent on the island. It's a road to nowhere (except a couple of cafes at the base) - so the only real reason for descending is to go back up.

cycling in mallorca

The 9.5km climb carries an average gradient of seven per cent, with an array of sweeping hairpin bends towards the top.

It's a good idea to try to get to Sa Calobra early in the morning; wait until later in the day and you may find your descent hampered by coaches carrying tourists.

Getting there usually involves a fair bit of climbing in itself. If you're based in Port de Pollença and Alcudia, the route out and back can come to around 80-100 kilometres, though you might prefer a loop like this .

Climbing out of the coastal towns, you'll begin with the 7.5km Col de Femenia (six per cent) - this is a perfect way to wake the legs up for the longer trials ahead.

Near the top of the Col de Femenia you'll find the Respol petrol station. Pause for a refuel, before beginning the road to Sa Calobra. There's another 5km slog before the long descent to the sea - after which you'll have no choice but to retrace your tracks back up the beast.

Puig Major / Col de Soller loop

Puig Major (climbed from Soller), at 10.6km with an average grade of six per cent, is the longest climb on the island.

On a day that you've got fresh legs, you can combine it with an ascent of the Southern side of the Col de Soller (4.9km at five per cent - which is much more gentle than the Northern side at 7.3km at six per cent), using Soller itself as a perfect pit stop. Just be careful of the tram lines that can play havoc with skinny tyres.

Once you're up and over Puig Major, with its long sections of painfully straight road, you'll be rewarded with stunning views. The descent is a long, extended affair during which you'll see flashes of the Gorg Blau reservoir - a sight that should bring life back to weary legs.

There's a great example loop here to give you some route inspiration.

Cap de Formentor

The ride to Formentor is typically considered to be a 'recovery day' ride, being about 60km from Alcudia and less from Pollença.

However, it's not flat at all - starting with a 3.7km climb (Coll de sa Creueta), followed by a descent and then a gradual rise all the way to the lighthouse at Formentor.

Whilst the ride is by no means easy, the views are absolutely breathtaking, and it's that which makes the lighthouse ride an unmissable experience.

cycling in mallorca

There is a small cafe at the top, but you might be better off rolling your way back and enjoying a more moderately priced coffee by the coast.

There are several long tunnels on the way to the lighthouse, so you will need lights.

Petra flat day out

Whilst the Formentor ride is far from a flat amble, the ride to from Port de Pollença/Alcudia to Petra can be. Indeed we have often used this as a mostly flat day out ideal for more social rides or even skills training days.

The route out to Petra consists of plenty of undulating and flat roads. The place itself is a fairly sleepy town, with a courtyard where you'll find a selection of cafes - including the  Bar Restaurante Es Casino  which serves particularly good large slabs of cheesecake.

Not far from Petra is Sineu, too - a town which plays host to an outdoor velodrome which is open to the public 24/7. If your legs are feeling fresh, this easy spin of a day makes for a perfect opportunity to test out your form with a flying lap.

If you want to add a little bit of spice en route back, you could try this  110km route  - which finishes with with an ascent of Coll de sa Batalla.

The climb up to Lluc from Sineu is a 'tester friendly' shallow climb at about five per cent over 8km, and you'll get to enjoy the descent from Lluc back into Pollença.

mallorca spain bike trips

Head to this Mediterranean cycling hub to ride across a variety of majestic landscapes and experience local Spanish culture.

The rugged island of Mallorca was a well-kept secret until professional cycling teams (Team Sky) discovered it was the perfect winter training destination. It’s no surprise why cyclists are drawn to this Spanish paradise, given its temperate climates, European cultural influences, dramatic mountains, and breathtaking Mediterranean backdrop. Expect challenging days with mountain ascents balanced by mellow, rolling inner-island rides featuring significantly less climbing. No matter the route, you’re guaranteed spectacular views and café stops for espresso, pastries, or traditional Spanish treats. Off the bike, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the local Mallorcan culture and experience the traditional food and wine of the region.

  • Six days of guided, supported rides through mountains, vineyards, and along the rugged coastline.
  • Stay at The Petit Hotel Alaró in the quaint village of Alaró
  • Eat chef-prepared, daily meals featuring Mallorquin and Mediterranean cuisines.
  • Wine tasting at a local vineyard.
  • Climb to Cap De Formentor, a lighthouse perched on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea
  • Traverse the entire island to reach Sa Calobra, considered a European bucket list climb.

Mallorca Spain Cycling Trip

Everyone comes to Mallorca for cycling, but some of your favorite memories may be of the local food. Every morning starts with a casual breakfast and espresso before heading out on the day’s adventure. Our chef prepares Mallorquin and Mediterranean cuisine featuring authentic Spanish food, serving family-style dinner.

Accommodations

Set at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains , The Petit Hotel Alaró has been our Mallorca base since 2018. Far from popular tourist spots, the small town of Alaró is quaint, with narrow cobbled streets and traditional Spanish charm. The proximity to the quiet countryside and beautiful mountain roads makes this bike- and hike-friendly hotel a fantastic home for the week. Settle in with a Spanish red wine in the flower-filled courtyard and indulge in authentic, chef-prepared meals.

Today’s Ride: Arrival Spin

22 miles & 2,100′

Cap de Formentor

We kick off our week with one of the trip’s highlights: cycling to the Cap de Formentor, a lighthouse precariously perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. We start the ride from Petit Hotel Alaro, make our way over to the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, and head up the first Col of the day, Col De Sa Batallia. The climb is forested and is one of our personal favorites. After the climb, we only have a couple of kilometers uphill before enjoying one of the most magnificent descents on the island, the Col D Femina. The descent will take us to Pollenca, and we will enjoy a few flat kilometers before heading towards the Cap De Formentor. We’ll pedal along a newly paved out-and-back road to reach the island’s northernmost point, where we’ll find the lighthouse and spectacular views. We’ll follow the same route back to Playa Formentor, where we will end our ride with a picnic lunch and swim at the beach. We will shuttle home from Playa Formentor.

Today’s Ride: Cap De Formentor

47-53 miles & 3,400 – 4,800′

Inner Island

We balance our bigger elevation days with more relaxed riding along the rolling terrain of the inner island, which has significantly less climbing. We’ll go deeper into the countryside and some small villages of Mallorca, with a few small gradual climbs along the way. Our main daily stop will be Sineu for espresso, pastries, and a few laps on the Velodrome.  After a cortado (small espresso with steamed milk) and pastry in Sineu, we make our way onto the Cami D’Muro, a small road turned into the main bike route across the island.

41 miles & 2,000′

Sa Calobra is an infamous ride when talking about cycling in Mallorca. This famous route is why many riders journey to the largest Balearic Islands. The road descends from the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains, traversing the island to the Port de Sa Calobra. The rollercoaster and hairpin turns are just one of many distinguishing features of this route. One turn loops under itself – one of only five turns that do this in Europe. The main climb ascends 2,000-plus feet on an out-and-back road, is considered a European classic, and is well known among professional cyclists and those seeking the most prestigious Strava KOMs. There’s a small cafe overlooking the climb where we’ll regroup and celebrate a massive accomplishment with an espresso.

Today’s Ride: Sa Calobra

34-73 miles & 4,600 – 8,800′

After a big day in the saddle, we’ll head out on a shorter ride with a relatively easy climb to the Randa monastery, built in the 13th century. We’ll enjoy a post-ride lunch at Cycling Planet in Alaro.

Today’s Ride: Randa

38-45 miles & 1,600 – 2,700′

The Coastal route is rugged, and if you look at the ride profile, it resembles a saw blade, with lots of 5k ups and downs. The climbs are not particularly long, but the flats are few and far between.  We’ll ride through the beautiful villages.  After Bunyalbafur, we have one final climb before a twisting descent towards Valldemossa. We will finish the ride in Valldemoosa, once home to one of the world’s most famous composers, Chopin. We will enjoy lunch before we shuttle home by van.

Today’s Ride: Coastal

43 – 67 miles & 5,500 – 7,500′

Adiós - Departure Day

Shuttles will run to the Palma de Mallorca airport all morning, with the last shuttle leaving at 11 a.m. Please email us your departure times.

For those who don’t depart early, you are welcome to go on an optional self-guided ride on a nearby route.

Located off the coast of Spain, the island of Majorca serves as an ideal setting for a bike tour. This loop tour of Majorca cycles around the entire island, visiting new, exciting sights and towns each day.

You'll be astonished by the natural beatuy! Standing on steep cliffs, overlooking quiet bays, you will feel the charm of Mallorca far away from its rich night life.

In the hills in the interior of the island, the wheels of the mills are turning gently, and you can hear the cicadas chirping in the grass. On this tour, you will cycle up and downhill – some nice climbs and descents await you. Perhaps those ups and downs are symbolic of the turbulent 2,000-year history of the largest Balearic Island? Both the coastal and the inland areas have their own charm and you will get to know each of them.

In the Dragon Caves of Porto Cristo, you will experience how creative, even bizarre, the architecture of nature can be. The picturesque fishing villages and shimmering salt lakes will revive your sense of romance.

And, of course, you will get many opportunities for swimming and sunbathing! "La Luminosa – The Enlightened One" is how Spainiards refer to Mallorca.

A great time to visit Majorca is in February, when you can see the island's almond trees in bloom .

Note: this itinerary is subject to change at Almond Blossom season, the first few dates of travel in February and March, due to some hotels being unavailable.

What an amazing trip, but beware of the hills!

We loved this trip. So, so, so glad we upgraded to the better bikes! If you don't LOVE BIG HILLS, make sure you get the e-bike (I'm not kidding!) The hotels were nice, but we were extremely disappointed when we realized after finishing one of the days' rides that we had 10k MORE to get to our hotel. We had a little difficulty with the route loading slowly in some areas, so we had to backtrack. Hint 1 - make sure you have international phone service so that you can access google to search where you should be just in case. Hint 2 - make sure you read the printed directions each night to find the next day's starting location because it won't be your hotel.

Great ride but a few concerns

First thing of concern is a water bottle, I bought my water bottle but the did not have a holder for the bottle I also am not sure of the conditions of the Nikes my back tire was low at the starts and had to be looked at before taking off The location for the paella was awful by the time we got there we were told they were closing and anytime we asked for a drink we were informed that we were keeping them open Also the paella was awful the chicken was ful with Bones The last town port de soller was absolutely gorgeous but the ride out was a concern to us and we opted not to ride All in all it was a great trip

Wonder-full!

We thoroughly enjoyed every day of our trip. The route was beautiful and took us through the interesting and diverse countryside. The app made navigation easy for our self guided tour and our manual bikes had enough gears to get us up the hills. We would highly recommend this trip.

Great ride but horrible bikes

We enjoyed generally the trip locations. Ride instructions were definitely a little fuzzy at times but generally good. The bikes were horrific. They had these heavy, equipment laden bikes that were meant for city riding and not going through the countryside. Not the type of bike meant for doing long hill climbs. Hotels were fine and had good locations, but again instructions to get to them were not great. We had to incur roaming charges to find one because the instructions they gave to find it would have put us the next town over.

BikeTours.com staff reply from Chloe October 17, 2019

Hi Bill, thanks kindly for the feedback. We appreciate you letting us know about the bikes being heavy and that the instructions could be improved. Most tours we offer are on hybrid touring bikes, and we can certainly understand they are often heavier bikes than most clients have at home. We'll surely pass your feedback onto the tour operator in order to improve their operations. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the ride and locations you visited regardless. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

Very enjoyable island loop

We hadn't been to Majorca before. This was a great way to explore it. The maps were excellent and the bikes were good quality city / touring bikes. The Euro-bike stickers on street signage are really helpful.

Beautiful place to cycle!

Majorca is truly a lovely island. Breathtaking coastal views and lovely pastoral scenery inland. Had some great lunches in the local towns. The arrangements were excellent. Good bikes, routes easy to follow, all hotels top-notch.

Great trip.

This was our first self guided tour. Almost everything was perfect. There are a couple of suggestions that may make the trip even better. Even though this was a self guided tour there were other people who were doing the tour at the same time. We saw them here and there but did not get to meet them and talk to them until 5th day at the luncheon. It would have been nice to have that lunch earlier so we could meet and interact sooner. We missed out on potential good friendship and interaction with others. The WiFi service was poor in most places. I use it regularly to stay in touch with family back home. The last place we stayed gave us individual wifi codes and it worked great. We would have loved to stay two nights at the Port de Soller instead of Can Picafort. That was the most beautiful area and we just did not have enough time to explore the area. The food was hit and miss but OK overall. I would suggest finding small restaurants with daily special menu for lunches. We had our best food on our trip in a little town in a very small restaurant. We will definitely do this kind of trips again.

Loop tour mallorca

The trip was fantastic, Euro Bike were alway available. The hotels were all 4 star. Every town we stayed in had points of interest. I have done a lot of biking in Europe & would use Euro Bike again. Only thing I would change is the option to be billed in Euros on my visa without a visa sèvice fee, other companies do this.

Met all expectations

Really a wonderful experience - with some shortcomings in navigation information and ability to contact local rep when needed, but still a trip that I would recommend highly.

  • ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Today you follow some of Mallorca´s most classic cycling routes, on quiet inland road and slightly hilly terrain, in the area around Sineu, Sant Joan and Petra. Shortly after the start you have the option to take a shortcut on dirt/gravel roads, but even if you follow the tamarc standard route the total of 36km is perfectly doable. If you want to extend the route to visit the etnographic museum Els Calderers and make a detour via Vilafranca de Bonany, mainly through vast farming areas. But again it´s possible to shorten this route extension by skipping the steep ascent (there-and-back) to the Santuari de Bonay, but the you will miss some superb views!

OPTION 1 36,2 km, ascent 442m, descent 443m

OPTION 2  route extension via Vilafranca de Bonany of 32,9 km, 69 km in total. Ascent 350m, descent 380m

Pleasant cycling route with gentle ascents and descents, mostly along local bike routes. The optional shortcut via wine estate Finca Biniagual makes your route just 45 km long ( versus 66 km for the complete circuit), avoiding one gradual ascent of 100m. There are plenty of villages along the way where you can stop for a drink or a meal at the Plaça and inmerse in village life.

OPTION 1 66km, ascent 569m, descent 568m

OPTION 2  shortcut via 45 km.

The standard route is relatively easy and very enjoyable as you follow mainly interior tarmac lanes with little traffic through the softly ondulating countryside. The overal ascent is similar to the last two days. However, the optional side-excursion for today to the three hermitages of Randa is very challenging but the views from Puig de Randa are truly spectacular.

OPTION 1 51 km / 32 mill, 456 / 457m ascent and descent

OPTION 2  extra 9,5km / 6 mill,  245m ascent/descent . Total 60,5km

Relatively short and easy route, mainly downhill ( except for a few hilltop villages you´ll have to traverse). After you pass Campanet, you peddle into a quiet valley, among carob and almonds orchards. And just one short section on a busier main road.

Challenge: 37,3km / 23mi, 391m ascent , 473m descent.

The cycling route has long flat sections, with just a few short ascents at the beginning plus a detour to the hilltop village of Muró. The roads are quiet, with the exception of one 2,5km section on a busy road (M13A, with wide shoulder). There is no way to avoid this busy section due to restricted access by private landowners. You also have a 4,5 km section on dirt tracks through the wetlands at S´Albufera Natural Park. Please remember that this is a birdwatchers' paradise. Be quiet and respect pedestrians ( walk your bike if necessary). The total route is 54km long with 2 possible shortcuts:

Challenge: 54km, 461m ascent and descent

Shortcut 1: 17km less ( total distance: 37km)

Shortcut 2: 20km less ( 34km in total)

On this cycling route you will have a chance to visit one/several lovely beaches as you cycle among farmed fields and along the coast. The minimum distance is 15,5 km ( if you just cycle from Pollença to Port Pollença) The maximum is 44km if you decide to explore the Alcudia peninsula and add the loop to Cala Sant Vicenç at the end. Optional ascent (on foot) to peak 'Talaia de Alcudia'.

OPTION 1: 15,5km

OPTON 2:  44km, 443m ascent, 443m descent

Your cycling trip comes to an end this morning after breakfast. Departure from the island or extra nights in the capital, Palma de Mallorca

Mallorca Bike Tours

To tour Mallorca by bicycle is to see why it’s considered the pinnacle of cycling for all types of riders. Mallorca is the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, a chain that includes Ibiza and Minorca, with all the tropical trappings: sun-drenched beaches, secret swimming coves, and seaside restaurants. But it’s the UNESCO-protected Tramuntana Mountains and excellent paved roads along the Mediterranean that make this a cycling paradise—plus stops in market towns and coastal communities constructed of sandstone before the bike tour ends in Palma.

Olives, sobrasada sausage, ensaïmada pastries, and seafood like langoustines and locally caught fish

Unique, locally produced wine varietals including Callet and Manto Negro and white wines like Prensal

What Guests are Saying

After Mallorca, I would definitely do another ride camp with Trek Travel; already making plans for the Greenville 7-day ride camp.

We’ll be back. We traveled to Girona after our Mallorca trip. We missed our Trek Travel guides helping us and guiding our exploration. Next time....

LOVED IT and loved our guides!! Definitely planning to do another trip in the future.

mallorca spain bike trips

Everyone in our group LOVED the trip. The routes, scenery, bikes and guides made it very special. This was our 5th Trek Travel trip and I would say that Mallorca had the best overall on the bike experience: epic scenery with mountains and coastline, nice roads, quaint towns and backroads through farms lands...Mallorca has it all!

mallorca spain bike trips

The routes were well thought out and strategically planned. The guides making me feel like a pro cyclist with all the support and food provided, I know that's their job. But the first class treatment from both of them, that's what I appreciate. That's what is going to keep me with Trek Travel for a long time.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly in to Palma de Mallorca (PMI).

You can find connections to this airport from many major European cities, although Barcelona, Spain is the closest (a 45-minute flight) and a great place to visit before and after your trip. A good website to visit for flights within Europe is www.SkyScanner.net or contact [email protected] to learn about our in-house travel services .

There are multiple ways to transfer to the Monnaber Hotel from Palma Airport. Car rentals are available and strongly recommended as our trip hotel is somewhat remote. Alternatively, taxis are plentiful and operate 24 hours a day from within Palma. Transfer from PMI to Monnaber Nou is approximately 75 euros for 1-4 passengers. Trek Travel recommends Mallorca Private Transfers shuttle service to the hotel. Reservations can be made here. You may also consult the Palma airport website at www.palmaairport.info for more transportation information.

Your Trek Travel staff will meet you at the Monnaber Nou Eco Hotel (Possessió Monnaber Nou, 07310 Campanet) at 11:00 AM on the first day of the Mallorca cycling trip. Upon meeting your guides and getting checked into the hotel, we will ensure you have a great fit to your Trek bike for the trip and give you a few pointers before you head off on a self-guided warm-up ride.

If you will be late for the meeting time, or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our hotel, Monnaber Nou Eco Hotel (+34 971 877 176), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to Monnaber Nou Eco Hotel in Campanet, for approximately 60 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:30 AM at the hotel. Please be sure to book transportation to your departure airport prior to the end of your trip.

The use of your Trek Travel bike ends at 11:30 AM on day of departure, and in some cases, may be needed for another guest arriving that day. Extensions may be available upon request but cannot be guaranteed before your trip begins.

What our customers say about us

Cycle tour with tapas for hen party.

An amazing thing to do to see the city and get about. We did it for part of a hen party - there were 7 of us. The tour was all off the busy roads along cycle paths which was great as a few of us were nervous. We saw the coast and the beach then back around the cathedral and to the old town for some tapas tasting. Our guide was Isabella and she was fun, quirky and interesting. She always stopped in the shade where she could, took lots of photos of us and kept us safe! Really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Sherbertemma1

Chester, reino unido, brilliant bike tour.

Jorn our guide was excellent. We joined a group tour with some other tourists in September . Bikes were well maintained and when one of our groups gears were not working it was quickly changed . Helmets and baskets were available too. Very informative and great fun. Quite flat so no massive exertion required in the heat. We didn’t do the tapas tour but our fellow Tourists did and we just joined for a drink. 3 hours well Spent with good local knowledge and much better than a hop on hop off bus. Very personal and we loved the nun cookie store !

Bexley, United Kingdom

I had preconceived notions of Palma, so wasn't overly enthusiastic about having a day here on our cruise. Nothing piqued my interest in the shore excursion options and I found these guys on Viator. So glad I did. I had a wonderful day and the old town is beautiful. James was such a lovely guy and really made the tour even more enjoyable. Tapas and wine was great, so I recommend getting that added extra onto the tour. Thanks, James!!

caitlinruns

Adelaide, australia, value for money bike ride.

Bikes were in very good condition, helmets provided but we had to ask. Had a great trip with Jorn who proved to be an interesting, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. I'd recommend him if you get a choice. The tapas and drinks was a nice way to take a break from the ride and get to know the other riders and Jorn. Everything that is to see in Palma is covered and it's history explained. We were on and off the bikes for around 4 hours - well worth the price. You don't need to be a regular cyclist to enjoy this ride. Much of the route is on cycle paths or very quiet back streets.

angelaJ4934JY

Perfect way to see the city.

James was a fabulous guide, and he took us to the best spots in Palma, being informative every step of the way. Great personality and a lot of fun!! The bikes were in excellent shape, and when mine was just a little tweaky, he immediately made a stop and replaced it for me. We felt like natives as we discovered all of the history of Mallorca as well as the amazing architecture. The Convent of Santa Clara was a highlight, and we ended on a fun note with a drink at a local restaurant. Highly recommend this tour as a way to explore a beautiful city.

  • Choose the right gearing. You’ll probably be doing a lot of climbing while you’re cycling in Mallorca. Most riders will prefer a compact 50-34 chainset with a 11-28t cassette. A cassette with a 30 or 32 tooth sprocket would provide even more assistance on steep roads.
  • Get some training in before your trip . If you want to take on Mallorca’s most famous climbs, like Sa Calobra , Puig Major , and Col de Sóller , you need to be ready to climb gradients at 6-8%. Try and get some solid training in before your trip to make it more fun.
  • Bring spares and know how to use them : Essentials include spare tubes, tyre levers, and a pump or CO2 canisters, plus a puncture repair kit and versatile multi-tool. You may even want to bring a toolkit for larger repairs. Check our packing list here for more info.
  • Fuelling . Eat before you start climbing and keep a gel or high-energy snack in your back pocket. It can be worth bringing a supply of your favourite bars/gels with you to avoid the possibility of locally bought energy foods disagreeing with you.   Don’t leave eating until you’re starving: eat now for later.
  • Check your bike . If you’re taking your bike, have it serviced before heading to Mallorca to reduce the risk of mechanical issues ruining your holiday. If you’re renting a bike, take a look at our questions to ask before hiring a bike .
  • Sóller tunnel . Don’t try to ride your bike through the Col de Sóller tunnel under the mountain: bikes are banned!
  • Take care on the descents .  In particular:
  • Beware the potentially problematic combination of hot brakes and tight hairpins;
  • On many of our routes there is not a lot of traffic, but don’t assume there will be none, especially when you’re descending hairpins at speed…;
  • The craggy mountains are beautiful but can deposit debris on the road. Watch out for small rock falls that mean there are obstacles in the road – we saw a few.
  • Bike path etiquette . If there is a marked centre line on a cycle path, it’s two way. If there isn’t, assume it is one way. Also be aware of all the non-cyclists on the cycle route: skaters, runners, wind-surfers coming up from the beach…
  • Plan your routes before you visit . Our ultimate guide to cycling Mallorca contains loads of route ideas. We give you route profiles, descriptions, and videos, so you know what you’re letting yourself in for. You can even use our free GPX downloads.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route before you ride it . Take a look at the maps and route profiles, so you know what to expect and can be confident. It’s never a good idea to be solely dependent on the Garmin, in case it stops working! Consider how long each climb should take, where you plan to refuel and any shortcuts or important parts of the route.
  • Use lights. The tunnels on the way to Cap Formentor and on Puig Major aren’t lit and are very dark. Make sure you have lights back and front to make you visible and help you see… They will also come in handy if you end up starting a ride very early or taking longer than expected and riding home in the dark!
  • Animals. Watch out for random livestock in the road: we saw sheep, goats, and chickens. They can cause adrenaline racing moments, and not in a good way.

Best times to cycle

  • Start early: In the summer, Mallorca gets very hot, and it’s advisable not to cycle during the hottest time of the day. Start and finish your ride early.
  • Opening times : Remember that cafés don’t tend to open before 9 am and that some may be closed in the off-season for the main tourist industry (i.e. November – February).
  • Pack for all weather. Temperatures in the mountains tend to be around 5-7 degrees cooler than at sea level. Mountain weather can also change very quickly. We recommend you pack accordingly and take enough cold weather gear in case you hit a cold snap or get caught by a rainstorm in the mountains. For more information, check our packing list which has a checklist you can use.
  • Sunstroke is a real risk. Wear suntan lotion and drink lots of water to avoid sunstroke/heatstroke, which can hit you even in the cooler months. Be aware of the symptoms .
  • Cramp. This is a common problem when it’s hot. We always take electrolyte tablets for our water bottle; we find they help stave off cramp.
  • Slippery roads in the rain . If it rains, take extra care and allow for greater stopping distances. Roads in Mallorca contain more granite, so they don’t melt in summer. This means they are more slippery than you’ll be used to if you’re from a cooler country.

Other Mallorca tips

  • If possible, ride with a friend . This is always a good idea as if something goes wrong, there are people there to help you out. (Haven’t got any friends?! How about joining a group ?) Before setting off, it’s also sensible to tell someone where you will be going and when you think you will be back.
  • Take cash. Many cafés in rural areas won’t accept cards. Always take your phone in case you need assistance (but remember you won’t always have reception).
  • Know the law and stick to it:
  • Cyclists must respect the traffic rules and regulations that apply to other vehicles; understand the Spanish highway code before you set out.
  • You must wear reflective clothing which can be seen from at least 150 metres away and a helmet outside the city.
  • Don’t ride more than two abreast. If you ride two abreast, keep as far to the right as possible.
  • It’s single file only in areas where visibility is poor, or you’re holding up traffic.
  • Cycling is prohibited on motorways.

The new lights in the Formentor tunnel are such a great improvement. My first visit I had neglected to bring a light and was quite terrified screaming downhill through the tunnel in the dark.

Yes, they’re a huge improvement aren’t they! Thanks for sharing this.
