Blue skies over the city of Kingston, Jamaica. Caidrro@Unsplash

Dynamic and Vibrant

Kingston bike tours.

Kingston, Jamaica's capital, is a city of vibrant energy and cultural richness, placing it firmly at the island's beating heart. With a population of just over a million people, Kingston is known as the world’s least populous cultural capital due to the disproportionate influence it exerts on music, arts and culture on the international stage.

The city of Kingston was purely agricultural land until its foundation as Jamaica’s capital in 1962, after which it grew at an incredible rate to accommodate the influx of interesting people and exciting ideas that flourished in this dynamic city.

The birthplace of both reggae and Bob Marley himself, Kingston knows how to party! The city’s irresistible atmosphere beckons with endless entertainment options, from clubs and bars to festivals and concerts. The city also offers a panoply of galleries, museums and historic sites, from the National Gallery of Jamaica to the historic Port Royal, once the stronghold of swashbuckling pirates. Or, if your holiday is set at a slower pace, soak up the sun on the white sands of Lime Cay's beaches and savor the sumptuous seafood and Caribbean cooking that dominates the city's gastronomic landscape.

Just a little way out of the city, however, lies a paradisal national park that offers a truly unforgettable bike tour experience. Beginning at the peak of the Blue Mountain, take a downhill MTB tour through lush tropical rainforest and witness a kaleidoscopic sweep of birds, butterflies and plants pass by as you ride. You'll pedal past vast coffee plantations before stopping to bathe under the sparkling spring waters of one of the park's many waterfalls.

Take your holiday in Kingston to the next level as you immerse all your senses in the mountain’s awesome natural beauty on an exhilarating bike tour, allowing Kingston’s carefree charisma and colorful charm to capture your heart and your imagination.

Nice to Rough Trail Surfaces

The trails in question are generally well maintained but include sections with everything from nice surfaces of fine gravel or stone dust to rougher surfaces of grassy dirt. The trail surfaces on the old rail lines between Ottawa and Kingston that are intended for cycling use are mostly flat. Though the trail authorities do work on the trail regularly, please be prepared for rougher sections including potholes and other potential obstructions.

Introductory. The rail trails are easy, mostly flat, stone dust/packed gravel surfaces. Distances each day are short, so this itinerary is suitable for beginner cyclists. In wet weather, parts of the trail may be muddy. Please note that there is an unavoidable section of road cycling leading into the town of Smith's Falls on this tour. Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). Cyclists will be expected to know how to fix a flat tire and make basic adjustments to their bicycles using the included repair kit. Sometimes route finding, losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of it as the vast majority of our first time travellers will attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding is updated regularly and we provide a 7-day service hotline in the event of any problems.

Know before you go

Safety equipment.

Make sure your bike is equipped with the following: a bell or horn, a white front light, a red rear light or reflector, white reflective tape on the front forks and red reflective tape on the back forks.

Also consider safety flags, a rear view mirror and reflective clothing. Cyclists under the age of 18 are required by law to wear a helmet while riding a bike, however it’s a good practice for everyone!

Rules of the road

Review the cycling safety guidelines by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). It is also important to understand the rules of the road before heading out and cycling on roadways.

E-Bikes in Ontario

E-bikes are bicycles that have a battery powered motor to assist with peddling. While no licence is needed to operate a e-bike, you do have to be over 16 years old to operate one. It is also important to keep your e-bike maintained and to brake earlier than you would when riding a standard bike.

TESTIMONIALS

Melanie s. from england, u.k..

My sons and I thoroughly enjoyed our bike tour with Jeff. We hadn't ridden for a while but Jeff put us at ease with the bikes first.

Jeff has a very detailed knowledge of Kingston which we found very interesting and engaging. Kingston is stunning and the route Jeff took us on was beautiful and gave us a really good taste of all that Kingston had to offer. Looking at Kingston by bike was so enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would do it again. My teenaged haven't stopped talking about it since. I would highly recommend this tour. Thank you so much Jeff.

Telisa P. from Morgantown, KY

The Kingston Bicycle Tour is a must do if you visit Kingston and want to know the history of the city, interesting facts, places to visit or if you just love the beautiful architecture of all the limestone buildings. Jeff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

The route is easy to manage even by a novice cyclist like myself.

My favorite part about the tour was the stories! Jeff is the best kind of historian - the story-telling kind. He paints word-pictures that make you feel like you've been transported back in time. He speaks of historical events as if he were recounting them first-hand, all the while never compromising the facts. He respects history. It's also inspiring how he brings you to an appreciation of the city's architecture. He reveals how the mortar, brick, stone and architects of the homes and monuments weave together to make up the fabric of the city. He casually draws out the rich history, juicy details and unknown tidbits of nice but, otherwise, unassuming buildings hiding in plain view. He's also super nice and humble and really cares about you.

When I’m travelling and visiting cities, I prefer to have a city tour by bike and to be honest, the bike tour of Kingston Bike Tours was the best ever. The guide was very enthusiastic, told a lot (not too much) about Kingston’s history, its architecture, he showed the different styles of the houses, and explained a little about the harbour. He took plenty of time to answer questions, and was not worried about “being back on time”. He chose quiet roads for biking, so we didn’t have to worry about the traffic. It was very enjoyable, and I gained valuable information about Kingston and its people. When you’re visiting Kingston, the bike tour is very recommendable!

Anne W. from Toronto

This tour was a fantastic way of not only seeing the beautiful city but hearing fascinating historical facts and intriguing stories of the area and seeing places we otherwise would never have seen or noticed. A great experience of getting exercise, learning facinating things and enjoying the great outdoors. beauty of the great outdoors.  I can't think of a better way of seeing the city! I wish every town had bike tours and a guide like Jeff.

We very much enjoyed our tour. Jeff was not only a very educational, but a gracious host. We fell in love with with your wonderful city. The pace of the ride was very doable For those who do not have bike riding as the main sport or formal exercise. The education included history , architecture and restaurants , it offered a great variety. We would definitely recommend anybody to take advantage of this unique opportunity since your city provides such wonderful weather and temperature to be outside and explore this quaint , wonderful waterfront town.

The Kingston Bike Tour is excellent! Jeff loves his city and that shows in his commentary. You'll learn important historical facts, but also lesser known but fun and interesting local stories that will make you laugh and make you think. I had a great afternoon

The tour is is an excellent way to experience downtown and surrounding Kingston. Probably the best thing is Jeff.  Jeff is totally into the whole experience. He likes doing this. It is obvious. This is not a job or or a chore. He wants to provide a great experience and he delivers in spades. Well worth the time and money.

John C. from Scotland, UK

I've lived in the UK for the past three decades. Whenever I visit a city there or in Europe, I try to arrange an open-top bus tour to get my bearings - including a good overview of relevant history and culture.  When I saw Kingston Bike Tours, I thought that it might be equally useful and enjoyable. Henceforth, I will, in the first instance, look for a bike tour! But I'll do this with the knowledge that Kingston Bike Tours is exceptionally special. Jeff has taught and coached for most of his working life - and he has clear talents. His tour is well-conceived: from United Empire Loyalists to The Tragically Hip. Even the bikes have been well-considered. Jeff provides California Cruisers which leave you comfortably in an upright position, so that you can relax and survey the views which the city has to offer. Kingston is a gem. It's been Jeff's adopted home since the early 90s, and his passion for the place is infectious. By the time that you've completed the tour, you'll be convinced that you've been taking a gentle spin through a new, but somehow familiar, city with your best mate. Could you really ask for more?

THANK YOU, Jeff, for your warm hospitality and commitment to accommodating us, even on a drippy day! Your in-depth portraits painted of old, current and future Kingston were so very interesting to learn about. You have a lot of knowledge (under that bike helmet), and fit the role perfectly, making it a fascinating journey!

We were having so much fun with you, it didn't even feel like exercise.

Nice trick, Jeff!!

Our Kingston Bike Tour was the highlight of our mini holiday.  We thoroughly enjoyed the super comfortable bikes and the gentle pace we kept throughout the tour.  Jeff, the amazing owner and our tour guide, was very personable and super knowledgeable about Kingston's history, sharing facts and lore while he led us around many historical sites of interest, including Kingston's beautiful waterfront trail.  Jeff's gentle, easy style, lively interaction, and easy banter made this event a very memorable one for us. We highly recommend this bike tour to visitors and residents alike, as all would learn much of the history of this area while at the same time, would enjoy a fun time with a great "Ambassador on Wheels" for Kingston!  We hope to repeat this tour in the future just to relive this enjoyable experience

Carol K. from Guelph

My husband and I booked a bike tour with Jeff at the last minute during a weekend in Kingston and it was definitely the highlight of our trip! From the very moment of meeting him, until the time we said our goodbyes, he gave us incredible insight and knowledge into Kingston's history and charm. Not only did we learn a lot about the city, but we also had some meaningful conversations with Jeff. He's incredibly kind, super friendly, and has a really great sense of humour. It was more like getting a tour of a city from a friend! He also took some lovely pictures of us! Thank you Jeff. We hope to see you again soon!

If you do one thing in Kingston I would recommend this bike tour! My husband I went on the tour and found it really fun and interesting. Jeff took us on a 2 hour tour of Kingston and told us all about Kingston, past and present. The bikes are comfortable and easy to ride and Jeff is very kind and engaging. Of all the things we did on our  overnight mini vacation, this was by far our favourite part of our trip!

Alex W. from Bromont

My girlfriend and I would highly recommend Kingston Bike Tours to anyone visiting the area who's remotely interested in history and looking for a new way to discover the city. Jeff was very knowledgeable and friendly and he shared info and facts in an interesting and enjoyable way. The cruiser bikes used were comfortable and well-adapted for the mild riding done. In addition, the duration of the tour was well worth the money. Definitely 10/10!

Anna C. from Vaughan

Jeff made sure we were comfortable with the bikes and pace of the tour. The tour route was very enjoyable and easy to follow along, while Jeff’s friendly and knowledgeable expertise was fantastic. We had a great time! Thank you!

I enjoyed the Kingston bike tour with Jeff very much. It is a lovely ride with a greatly knowledgeable Kingstonian. I highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kingston.

Great way to " experience " the beautiful city of Kingston and see the main attractions up close in two hours! Jeff  was a wonderful  local guide,  patient, informed and  even  highlighted areas that we  had a personal interest in seeing.   Thanks for the memories Jeff - we look forward to taking  your tour again!

We're on trip advisor experiences, trevor c. from calgary.

Yesterday was my lucky day as I had a personal tour with Kingston Bike Tours.  Jeff has a great knowledge of the local history and his enthusiasm for the subject shines through. The route is lovely with stops along the way to appreciate the buildings and scenery.  My bike was comfortable and perfect for cruising along the tour.  Jeff was punctual, friendly, and even did research into a few of my obscure questions after the fact. I hadn’t planned on taking the tour, but saw the sign and signed up. Very glad that I did!

The three hour bike tour seems to have flown so fast as we were enjoying every stop along the way. The best part is Jeff's a really good story teller. I was hooked on all the information and stories he had to say. All in all it was beyond what I expected from the tour!! If you're looking to book a tour, book a bike tour. The sights, the information and the stories were great! Kudos  to this excellent service!

See what riders from Canada and around the world are saying about Kingston Bike Tours!

The best Philly bike trails to explore small towns, food destinations, and breathtaking vistas

Leave the car at home and take these bike trails to beautiful small towns, parks, and vistas in the Philly region.

Two cyclists take advantage of the surprisingly cool fall weather by biking on the Schuylkill River Trail in Oaks, Montgomery County in 2018.

Babbling brooks, eco-friendly parks, and food excursions await at the end of some of Philly’s best biking trails.

Unbeknownst to many, there are hundreds of miles of interconnected bike trails throughout the region, according to John Boyle, who’s worked as director of research and advocacy at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia for the past 20 years.

“From Mercer to Gloucester counties in New Jersey and through Philadelphia and the four collar counties, there’s literally a network of bike trails that are blooming,” he said. Understanding local bike trail networks make day trips all the easier.

There are a few key trail systems any cyclist should know when planning a day trip or longer ride in the Philly region: the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT), the Circuit Trails network , and the East Coast Greenway . Think of these trail systems as starting points that will lead to other networks along the journey, including the Delaware River Trail , Chester Valley Trail , Pennypack Trail , Wissahickon Bike Trail and the Delaware and Raritan Canal Trails , said Anya Saretzky, the project manager for the local Circuit Trails network , which is a part of the Rails to Trails conservancy national bike trail network.

“My first recommendation for a really short trip is The Schuylkill Banks in Philadelphia. You can go out on the Schuylkill Boardwalk, which is really gorgeous with a great view of Center City . From there you could go up to the art museum and look at Boathouse Row,” Saretzky said.

Through Philly’s bike trails, picturesque landscapes and destinations are around every corner, with a vast network that continues to expand. Plus, many of these trails are close to public transit for an easy trip back home.

Short, easy bike trips around Philadelphia for beginners

Schuylkill river trail to manayunk through norristown.

Start : The Schuylkill Banks at📍2501 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19103

End : Norristown Transportation Center near📍73 E. Lafayette St, Norristown, PA 19401

⌚ 1-2 hours

Taking the Schuylkill River Trail from Philadelphia up to Norristown is the perfect for beginners because “Plan B” for the trip back to Philly can be SEPTA ’s Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail line , said Boyle. Cyclists can hop off the SRT at any time in East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough, Conshohocken , or Norristown, each with their own dining, nature, and cultural scenes.

“The best choice [for beginners] is the Schuylkill River Trail as it gives you lots of options not just from Philly, but for anyone who lives near the Schuylkill between Pottstown and Philadelphia,” Boyle said. “This trail will give you variety and it’s very accessible by public transit.”

Pennypack Trail to Fox Chase Farm or All Aboard Cafe

Start : Pennypack on the Delaware Park 📍7801 State Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19136

End : Fox Chase Farm 📍8500 Pine Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19111 or All Aboard Cafe 📍940 Fetters Mill Rd., Bryn Athyn, PA 19009

🚲 8 to 12 miles

This beginner bike trail begins in Northeast Philadelphia along the Delaware River and takes you through Pennypack Park, a 10,000-acre city park with nature, history, and recreation, such as The Dell Music Center, swimming pools, and the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust , said Boyle. Plus, there are farms and orchards throughout the area, like Fox Chase Farm. Montgomery County will soon complete a connecting trail right to SEPTA’s Fox Chase Regional Rail line for easier city access.

“You’re going through this deep forest with a babbling brook beneath you, the Pennypack Creek,” Boyle said of his favorite beginner bike ride. “Right in the middle of the trail, there’s a food truck — All Aboard Cafe — next to the Bryn Athyn post offices. That area has become the center of social life in Bryn Athyn and on warm days people hang out in this little park by the post office and have lunch at this food truck.”

Cooper River Trail through Camden, Collingswood, and Haddonfield

Start : Ben Franklin Bridge at 📍5th and Race Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19106

End : Challenge Grove Park near 📍Park Blvd. & Caldwell Rd., Cherry Hill , NJ 08034

🚲 10 miles or less

⌚ 1 to 1.5 hours

Ride over Philly’s century-old Ben Franklin Bridge to get to Camden’s waterfront with attractions, nature, and recreation. From exiting the Ben Franklin Bridge in New Jersey, the Cooper River Trail is a mile bike ride away on Camden’s streets. Take the trail along Cooper River Lake, passing parks, restaurants, and shops.

“Biking over the Ben Franklin Bridge is a really cool experience,” Saretzky said of a bike trip to Camden’s waterfront. “Check out Cooper’s Poynt Park , it’s right along the Delaware waterfront and that there’s a beautiful view of Center City and the river, plus there’s a playground if you bring kids.”

Planning a bike trip around Philadelphia

Before embarking on a bike trip, it’s essential to plan your route, pack appropriately, and inspect your bike’s tires and brakes.

Mapping out a bike trip route

For planning a bike trip route, the Rails to Trails conservancy has two online resources to simplify the process. Use these tools alongside your phone’s GPS as needed:

The Circuit Trails : The regional bike trail network provides map tools, directions, and resources on dozens of possible bike trips in the area. Visit circuittrails.org for basic resources and a list of bike trips , then use their interactive map tool to plan a route at dvrpc.org/webmaps/thecircuit .

TrailLink : This national trail network offers an interactive map to plan routes, along with history on trails, nearby destinations and activities, and parking and public transit options. Cyclists can leave reviews to get more personal summaries of each trail.

What to pack for a bike trip around Philadelphia

Lots of water . That’s the #1 rule when riding long distances, said both Boyle and Saretzky. The Adventure Cycling Association recommends drinking close to 1 liter (32 ounces) of water for every hour of cycling.

Additionally, it’s crucial to have a fully charged phone when on a bike trip in case of emergencies.

Here’s a starter list for packing a bike trip bag :

Water: 32 oz. portable water bottle, plus extra.

Snacks: granola, cereal bars, fruit, etc.

Portable phone charger and phone charging cable

Inspect your bike before a long trip

Check your bike’s tire pressure and brakes before the next trip is ruined a mere 15 minutes into the ride.

If you’re unsure on how to do it, bring the bike to a local shop. See a comprehensive list of local bike shops at bicyclecoalition.org/shops . Boyle and Saretzky suggest identifying a few shops along your next bike trip route in case you need emergency repairs.

5 of the best road trips and long-distance cycling routes in Slovenia

Mark Baker

Take a driving or cycling tour through Slovenia with these top routes © Adam Wrobel / Shutterstock

Slovenia is often called small.

And while it’s true the Central European nation ranks 24th in size out of 27 EU countries, this is a positive for drivers and cyclists. In the course of one visit, you can see many of Slovenia ’s most picturesque villages, pristine forests, vineyard-covered foothills, karst landscapes, and seaside towns, and shoot a lifetime’s worth of majestic photos.

What many travelers learn as they drive or ride around Slovenia: the country may be compact on a two-dimensional map, but it’s a 3D heavyweight. The topography is dense with stunning mountain ranges – their peaks reflected in alpine lakes fed by rivers that roll across undulating hillsides and merge with the Adriatic Sea.

The key to a drive or a cycling excursion here, regardless of season , is to take your time and soak in Slovenia’s quiet byways. Allow yourself to be as free as the open road. Here, we’ve outlined three scenic trips for exploring by car, and two long-distance cycling journeys. The distances provided are not direct between the start and end points; they assume some diversion from the main route and allow you to explore more of each region.

Two hikers follow a path leading to a wood cabin in a rocky landscape

1. Alps to Adriatic road trip

Best road trip to sample everything Kranjska Gora–Koper; 300km (185 miles), allow 1–2 days

Summer or early autumn is the best time for this “Greatest Hits of Western Slovenia” journey that combines the highlights of the Julian Alps , the karst region and the Adriatic coastline. The trip starts near Kranjska Gora, and winds its way through the mountainous Triglav National Park and along the luminous, turquoise Soča River before breaking through the hills at vineyards and ending up at Koper on the Adriatic. You can do it all in a day, but there’s so much to see en route, you could easily stretch it into a week.

From Kranjska Gora, follow main road no 206 south into the national park and snake your way up and down the 50 breathtaking hairpin turns of the Vršič Pass , Slovenia’s highest mountain pass, at 1611m (5285ft). Continue along the same road, moving deeper into the park until you reach the whitewater-rafting mecca of Bovec . Turn south along main road 203 to the historic town (and now culinary hot spot) of Kobarid.

From here, pick up main road 102 heading south, following the Soča River, in the direction of Tolmin. Bear right on main road 103 through the heart of the Goriška Brda’s vineyards, to the modern city of Nova Gorica. You could easily spend days in Goriška Brda, sampling the wines and touring pretty villages like Šmartno. From here, follow the H4 highway that merges with the A1 expressway to take you down to Koper. A slower journey follows main road 204 out of Nova Gorica and passes through lovely, medieval villages like Stanjel.

Planning tip: Don’t try the Alpine portion of this tour in late autumn and winter (from October through March) as the Vršič Pass is closed for the season.

2. Sava Valley road trip

Best road trip to understand the region Kranjska Gora–Brežice; 200km (125 miles), allow 2 days

A drive along the Sava River takes adventurers diagonally from Slovenia’s far northwest corner to a southeastern nook nestled against Croatia . Historically this is one of Europe’s most important waterways; it spans Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. For travelers, exploring this cultural corridor is essential for understanding the country and the region generally.

Starting at the Sava’s source, near Kranjska Gora. From here, follow main road 201 east along the river. Pick up the busier E61 highway that passes near Lake Bled , where mountains frame its oft-ogled island church that give you, perhaps, the best photo op of your life. Follow the route beyond the pretty town of Kranj to Ljubljana , where the city center buzzes with open-air markets, cafes, watering holes, and sublime restaurants.

North of the capital, main road 108 rejoins the Sava and parallels the waterway eastward for around 60km (36 miles), passing through riverside hamlets, to the town of Zidani Most. Pick up main road 5 for another 40km (25 miles) to Krško and then beyond, following the main A2 motorway, to Brežice in the Posavje region, where vineyards and castles merge on the riverbanks to complete this Central European fairy tale.

Traveling Slovenia on a budget? Here are our top money-saving tips

3. Thermal spas road trip

Best road trip in eastern Slovenia Maribor–Maribor; 400km (250 miles), allow 3 days

As you head east into the Pannonian Plain, dominated by the Sava and Drava Rivers, the geology begins to change. Here, the limestone Alps have been replaced by thermal waters at every turn. The Romans discovered these Slovenian treasures centuries ago. Today, the adjoining health and  wellness spas , many with long years of tradition, take you from stressed-out to relaxed and robed in the span of a visit. There’s no prescribed circuit here, simply the chance to see and soak at one of the country’s many  natural health resorts along the drive.

Start and end your loop in Maribor , Slovenia’s second-largest city. From there, cruise south in the direction of Ptuj , and the city’s elegant Terme Ptuj . Continue south to the historic spa at Rogaška Slatina , with waters known round the world for their curative properties. Terme Olimia in the nearby town of Podčetrtek, began as a wellness center in the 1960s, but has since expanded to include more water slides per capita than anywhere else in the world.

The drive north and west toward the city of Celje brings you closer to another batch of wellness retreats. Terme Dobrna , north of Celje, is the oldest working spa in Slovenia and shows no signs of aging. The Celjska Koča , south of Celje, is a family-focused adventure park perfect for parents who want to squeeze in wellness. Thermana Laško has a well-deserved international reputation for luxury. Dramatic Rimske Terme sports Roman-inspired baths and wellness treatments. On the return to Maribor, detour in the direction of Rogla, to pop in at Terme Zreče , tucked into the long-running hills of the Pohorje range.

Planning tip: To get the most out of this trip, plan to stop at one or two spas along the route and book rooms and treatments in advance online.

4. Gourmet cycling route

Best bike trip for sampling fine food and drink Soča Valley–Maribor; 480km (300 miles), allow 1 day per stage (16 days for the circuit)

The  Slovenia Green Gourmet Route (SGGR), launched in 2021 to coincide with Slovenia being chosen as Europe’s Gastronomic Region , takes cyclists to vineyards, Michelin-starred restaurants and family-run bistros as it stretches from the country’s western edge to its eastern end. The route is built along 16 day-long stages that can be done as one long trip, or simply piecemeal, depending on your interests (note the stages require at least a moderate level of fitness). The SGGR offers serpentine climbs to typical Slovenian perched villages and along rivers to castles hanging from bluffs. And though this isn’t a car road trip, you are rolling on wheels to the same spots, just with more human-touch accessibility.

The SGGR is one of several recent  Slovenian itineraries that freely provide information so adventurers can explore the nation's culture, food and active possibilities on their own. Starting from  Kobarid , in the Soča Valley, the route hugs the Italian border, before heading east through the capital, Ljubljana, to the pastoral Sava River. The final stages require a train journey and then spin along the Drava River to Maribor. Trading a seatbelt for a bicycle helmet means you’re traveling like a Slovene, earning your vittles and wine after rewarding days in the saddle.

Planning tip: See the website for a description of each stage; be sure to reserve accommodations and meals in advance to avoid rolling up to find everything’s already booked solid.

5. Primeval Forest bicycle loop

Best bike trip for getting out into the woods Kočevje–Kočevje; 145km (90 miles), allow 4 days

More than 60% of Slovenia is covered in trees, yet the  Kočevsko region — in the southeast of the country — is considered to be Slovenia’s nature capital. The four-stage Slovenia Green Kočevsko Cycle Loop, which starts in Kočevje, about 60km (36 miles) south of Ljubljana, gives cyclists a chance to pedal through the area’s virgin and UNESCO-listed stands of ancient beech and fir that foxes, bears, lynx and deer call home. The panoramas aren’t bad either. From atop the Dinaric Alps, vistas include eagles, hawks and the Kolpa river, which runs along the Croatian border.

Planning tip: Consult the  Kočevje Cycle Loop website for descriptions of each of the four stages. Rent bikes and pick up more info at the Bearlog Hostel in Kočevje.

King County approves use of e-bikes on regional trails

cycle trips kingston

As more people swap their old bicycles or cars for electric bikes, the 175-mile network of paved trails in King County may become less a place for a weekend adventure and more of an integral piece of the region’s commuter transportation network.

The Metropolitan King County Council last week passed the biggest update to county park rules since the 1980s. Aside from tweaks shortening the length of leashes dogs must be kept on and updating criteria the parks director uses to set fees, the changes include new rules allowing e-bikes and e-scooters on regional trails, as well as the approval of a study that could open up the trails to riding after dark.

When the changes take effect later this month, the county’s vast network of trails — from the celebrated 27-mile Burke-Gilman Trail to the little-known 3.6-mile East Plateau Trail — will be governed by the same rules the state, Seattle, and Snohomish and Pierce counties have for trails allowing e-bikes and e-scooters.

King County’s 215 miles of unpaved, backcountry trails will remain off-limits to such vehicles.

Council members and trail advocates say the new e-bike rule will unlock the network’s potential in the region’s growing multifaceted transportation system.

Eastside Councilmember Claudia Balducci said the pieces of a connected bike network don’t exist in the way they do for automobiles, from driveway to highway.

Opening up the trails to e-bikes could help change that.

“An analogy for the super highway is the graded, paved, separated trails” in King County, Balducci said. Expanding bikeways also empowers transit use, she said, since bikes can connect the “last mile” between transit station and home or work.

Her sentiment was echoed by trail advocates.

“Regional trails are transit infrastructure. Full stop. They are key pieces to expanding our transportation network,” said Katherine Hollis, executive director of Eastrail Partners, a nonprofit focused on completing the county’s 42-mile Eastrail Trail. “They’re already here. They’re being used. We need to work on how we make these trails for everyone.”

Kelli Refer, executive director of Move Redmond, said her advocacy group recently made a map showing how bicyclists and pedestrians can connect to Sound Transit’s recently completed light rail 2 Line, which she said showed “how obvious our trail system is to help people access light rail and other transit options on the Eastside.”

Electric bikes have technically been around since the 1890s. But modern e-bikes, equipped with rechargeable batteries and high-tech motors that allow riders to go upward of 20 mph for 25 to 75 miles, are a fairly new phenomenon becoming common in the world’s cities, especially in geographically challenging areas like Seattle with its steep inclines.

In the U.S., e-bikes accounted for 18% of all bikes sold in 2023, up from 2% in 2016, according to Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.

Their dominance is more pronounced in Europe, where e-bikes account for 57% of bike sales in the Netherlands, 48% in Germany and 28% in France, according to Bike Europe, an industry publication.

Some state and city lawmakers, and bike advocates, are trying to goad the American market with incentives. According to data from Portland State University’s Transportation Research and Education Center, more than 100 active or proposed incentive programs exist nationwide, offered by governments, utility companies, universities and employers.

Ten states have such programs, either actively doling out incentives or in the works after legislative approval. On Wednesday, Minnesota briefly launched its income-based rebate program offering up to $1,500 toward purchasing an e-bike, but shut it down due to technical issues for an indefinite time.

Washington legislators approved a rebate program in 2023 providing $300 off e-bikes, with an additional $900 off for people with low incomes, but it has yet to be launched. Hannah Weinberger, spokesperson with the state’s Active Transportation Division, said in an email that the program “will likely take several more months” before it’s ready, and encouraged people to buy an e-bike without the rebate if they could afford it.

The average price of an e-bike is between $2,000 and $3,000, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Studies have shown that e-bike owners drive less and bike more.

A study published in Transportation Research in 2017 described the results of a trial in the U.K., where participants were loaned e-bikes for six to eight weeks. They rode, on average, 15 to 20 miles a week, and reduced their car mileage by 20%.

Another study in the same publication from 2020 found that people increased their daily bicycle use from 1.5 to 6 miles, after buying an e-bike, and said the e-bike “has a strong potential to shift people from motorised to active transport.”

Many types of e-bikes

E-bike popularity has led to a raft of new federal and state rules, mainly focused on speed and safety. To meet federal regulations, bicycle manufacturers developed a three-tier classification system for e-bikes.

Class 1 limits speeds to 20 mph, and the motor only provides power when the rider is pedaling, also known as pedal assist.

Class 2 also keep speeds to 20 mph, but allows the use of a throttle, no pedaling necessary.

Class 3 have top speeds of 28 mph, but only by pedal assist. This class of bikes is intended for long-range bicyclists and is generally not meant to be used on urban trails. Most states limit these bikes to people 16 and older.

King County’s new rules restrict the type of e-bikes allowed on regional trails to classes 1 and 2, and speeds will be limited to 15 mph.

Federal law doesn’t allow e-scooters on trails built with federal dollars, so the vehicles won’t be allowed on parts of the 11-mile East Lake Sammamish Trail, and the still incomplete 16-mile Lake to Sound Trail between Renton and Des Moines. E-bikes, however, are allowed on those segments.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council members discussed an amendment from Balducci — whose district includes the Eastrail Trail and the 2 Line — that would expand the hours the county’s trails are open, currently set from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset.

The county will study expanding the hours, examining safety and legal constraints, as well as how much it would cost to light the trails for use after dark.

Balducci said the study’s results could influence the upcoming King County parks levy, a six-year levy that accounts for 80% of the county’s parks budget and is expected to be on the ballot for voter renewal in November 2025.

“There are a number of hurdles we’d have to overcome to expand trail hours,” she said. “When people get injured on our trails there’s a liability issue. The county can be hit up for a lot of money if trails are used for transportation and someone gets hurt.”

But Balducci said limiting the hours hobbles the trail network’s prospect as a commuter system.

“We routinely talk about trails as being roads or highways or even superhighways for nonmotorized means of transport,” she said at the meeting. “But for people who depend on this growing trail network to get to work, school or do trips with transit, this is not possible, especially when you think about the middle of winter when the sun rises around 8 a.m. and sets before 5. Our roads are open 24/7 and our trails are barely open eight hours during the winter.”
