The Jungfrau 3 Day Travel Pass (Switzerland)

Our visit to Switzerland was part of a road trip where we arrive from Lake Como in the Italian Alps before forwarding on to Chamonix and the French Alps. In Switzerland, we do rush through other attractions along the way including Titlis and Brunni in Engelberg, but our main attraction was the Jungfrau region where we base our travel from Interlaken Ost station. To make the most of our time there we go with 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass ( current prices here ) which gives us unlimited use of many trains and cablecars starting from Interlaken (by far one of the best things to do in Interlaken). We do stay slightly out of the way in guesthouses which cost us roughly 50 Euros per night but this is one of the many perks of driving. Otherwise, accommodation and hotels in Interlaken are significantly more expensive ( hotel list here  or other Jungfrau hotels here ).

Interlaken to Jungfrau Tickets

So our base of travel at Interlaken Ost station is recommended by most where it’s easy to reach and has tons of not-so-expensive parking available. The station is also the main ticketing office for the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass and we are given a whole bumpf of stuff at the ticketing kiosk. The most important pieces are the passes (obviously), and the map which is shown below. This shows the routes included in the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass where the red line routes are all free whereas the black is not. There is one dashed red line to The Jungfraujoch train and Top of Europe Route which indicates it comes at half-price with the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass. Jungfraujoch tickets are definitely worth taking.

Train and Cablecar Map for 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass on Jungfrau Railway

Jungfraujoch Train (Top of Europe)

We buy the half price Jungfraujoch Top of Europe tickets at the kiosk and pay the extra (5 francs per person each way) for seat reservation. It is now around 09:30 and already many of the Jungfrau trains are fully booked for the day. It is best to get in early and get this attraction out of the way first. It is worthwhile. So we jump on the train from Interlaken Ost and travel to Kleine Scheidegg which is the base station for the Jungfraujoch Train to the Top of Europe. Without our reservation we would have been waiting some time… Anyway, for the best views sit at the right side of the Jungfraujoch train.

Along the way, as the train tunnels through the Jungfrau mountains, there are two intermediate viewpoint stops (Eigerwand and Eismeer) before it reaches the final Jungfraujoch station which is the highest railway station in Europe (hence Top of Europe). So I will write this attraction up in full as there’s a lot to it but to sum it up there are viewpoints, snows to frolic in, and other attractions such as glacier tunnels to explore. Definitely do it, but do note that it may be hard to breathe for some who have not yet acclimatize to these heights (altitude sickness). I was one of these although it may be due to my childhood asthma or general fitness which borders on terrible.

Fanfan Wilson Travel Blogger 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass on Jungfrau Railway

Harder Kulm (Interlaken)

This is one of the easier attractions on the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass so we squeeze it into the end of the first day where there’s really not much time after Jungfrau Railway to the Top of Europe. Where, including queueing and travel the Top of Europe, it does take up a good half day. Anyway, Harder Kulm is a simple viewpoint over Interlaken and the base for the funicular train is found just a short walk from Interlaken Ost station. Just follow the path past the train station, away from the car park, and continue until you find a bridge crossing the adjacent River. Cross the bridge and the funicular station is right in front of you.

The trains to Harder Kulm run every 30 minutes and the best views are found at the back of the train (although they aren’t great, to be honest). We rush ahead from the top station and have the viewpoint bridge to ourselves until the crowds arrive. The views here are over Lake Thun and Lake Brienz found on each side of Interlaken. The same lakes do have boat crossings for tourists but, unlike the 5-day pass, they aren’t included in the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass. We don’t stay long here and are on the next train down again.

Harder Kulm Viewpoint Bridge on 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass on Jungfrau Railway

Männlichen (Grindelwald)

The next morning we would take on our first hike along the Männlichen Royal Walk which is something I don’t find out until I am there. I am actually clueless to every attraction over the three days and pretty much follow Fanfan around and photograph. I am now accustomed to this style of travel and actually prefer it as every destination is unexpected and I’m not involved in planning or chasing schedules. But I would have liked to know in advance about this hike. Actually, this route isn’t shown on the old maps (it’s a black line above) but it’s apparently included now on the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass.

For it, we follow a network of cable cars and viewpoints leaving Wengen and arriving to Männlichen, later to forward on again to Grund. In between we of course do the Männlichen Royal Walk which would be our first and only “hike” during our time in the Jungfrau region, and it’s more of an upward stroll than anything. It takes no more than 30 minutes up (with a bunch of breaks between), and 10 minutes back. Arriving back we then take the cable car to Grund which was by far the better of the two cable cars with fantastic mountain views along the way. Then, from Grund, we take a quick train to Grindelwald.

Viewpoint at top of Männlichen Royal Walk on 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass

First Cliff Walk (Grindelwald)

“First” is actually the name of a minor summit, in case you’re confused. It is also known as the First Cliff Walk by Tissot simply because the watch company Tissot sponsored it. Anyway, First Cliff Walk is reached by a cable car from Grindelwald, although this cable car is not found near the main Grindelwald station. Instead we need to trek through the town centre, pretty much in a straight line, following signposts, and it’s really not so far. Roughly eight minutes. The cablecar brings us to the base for entry to the First Cliff Walk where I regrettably stay behind while Fanfan goes it alone. Something I hadn’t realised the previous day is that sunburn is a lot worse at higher altitudes because there’s less atmosphere to block the sunlight. The snow and freezing temperatures had fooled me.

So I had been roasted at the Jungfrau Top of Europe tour the previous day and now the sun was trying to finish me off. I was also tired having been up since 5am to watch the Brexit result. Anyway, I wait behind while Fanfan potters off to the First Cliff Walk which is a summit trail with a 40-metre long suspension bridge and 45-metre long observation platform, as shown below. I am left behind for no more than 20 minutes so it’s really not hard to reach and seeing the photos I do regret not following along.

First Cliff Walk Bridge and Observation Platform on Jungfrau Travel Pass

Schynige Platte

We would start our days from Interlake Ost at around 9am to 10am, then we would return at roughly 6pm. So the days are really quite long, and it’s mostly travel between attractions which takes up the time. On our return journey we find ourselves at Wilderwil station waiting for a connection to Interlaken Ost. With still time to spare we decide to jump on a different train to Schynige Platte which is one of the lesser attractions available on the Jungfrau Three Day Travel Pass. I really didn’t want to go but Fanfan was still eager and it did look more leisurely than most. The train was also quite adorable.

Unfortunately the train climbs the mountainside not much faster than walking speed. A brisk jog at the most and what was meant to be a quick attraction took up a couple of hours. Even the old folk look less than impressed. We were on the second last train of the day and we were two of only five people on the journey. The train could probably fit a hundred so it’s really not the most popular of attractions. I actually spent much of the first half of the upward journey writing this post, but the second half does get better as it opens out to views over the two lakes of Interlaken, and eventually mountains. Reaching the top we just get back into the train and travel back down again. In hindsight it was one of the more enjoyable rides as I don’t really have to do anything.

View From Above Over Schynige Plattes on the Jungfrau Railway Pass

Jungfrau Weather (Cancelled Plans)

The third day, as expected, was not a great day. Through the night before there were electrical storms where lightning flashed almost constantly outside our bedroom. It was like nothing I had seen before and I was honestly scared to open the curtains of our top floor hotel room. But bad weather was something we anticipated and it is easy to check  weather conditions beforehand through live cams  at each attraction. This entire Switzerland trip was in fact delayed due to weather forecasts and we ended up on an impromptu road trip through northern Italy. With only two days of weather forecast through the entire weeks of us being in the region and we had already made the most of them during the first two days of the 3-Day Jungfrau Travel Pass.

Fortunately, we covered most of what we had planned and our itinerary for this third day was little more than pottering through the quaint rustic towns of Lauterbrunnen and Murren. Instead, we travel away from the bad weather and to the old town of Lucerne with its lakes and bridges. It was a worthwhile substitute and I don’t feel our limited time went to waste. Adding up the individual attraction prices  we definitely saved a fair bit.

Old Town Lucerne in Summer and Lake Bridge in Switzerland

Jungfrau Sightseeing

Mountains and extreme sports do come hand-in-hand and one of the more common sights would be the paragliders who swoop down from the mountains and cliffsides. There are classes and it is possible to be strapped in with instructors for your own flight, but we also saw people merely just turning up and jumping off cliffs. At Männlichen some fella just turned up with this big bag strapped to his back. He empties out a parachute and opens it along the ground. After roughly 10 minutes of clipping and strapping on his safety harness and whatnot, he takes a run up and just jumps off a cliff. It’s ridiculously easy looking.

There’s also a lot of cowbells. These are all over Switzerland where you’ll typically hear the cows before you see them. There are also goat bells and sheep bells. Lots of bells.

Summary of Jungfraujoch Ticket Options

All prices shown are for adult return tickets in 2024. ^Indicates prices for peak season travel 1 June to 31 August. Slightly lower fares apply outside peak season. °Valid from 1 May to 31 October only. #Indicates fares ex Interlaken.

What is Jungfraujoch?

Mount Jungfrau is one of Switzerland’s most well-known mountains and, together with the Eiger and Mönch, it forms an impressive triple-peak.  Mount Jungfrau is located in the Bernese Alps and rises to 4,158 metres above sea level.

The ‘joch’ part of the name Jungfraujoch refers to a pass or saddle between two mountains, and this is what is referred to as the Top of Europe.

Jungfraujoch (altitude 3,454 metres) is home to Europe’s highest railway station, Jungfraujoch station, and it also offers stunning views of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau – Aletsch landscape.

How to get to Jungfraujoch

Jungfraubahn

There are two ways you can reach the Top of Europe (Jungfraujoch).

The first, and traditional, method is to take the Jungfraujoch train ( Jungfraujoch bahn in German) which involves a series of regional trains from Interlaken (or intermediate stations) and then the Jungfrau train operated by Jungfrau Railways.

The Jungfraujoch railway route climbs steadily up the mountain alongside alpine pastures before making its final ascent to the summit via a 7-kilometre long tunnel carved through the mountain.

Just before the summit is reached, the train makes a five minute stop at Eismeer Station (Sea of Ice).

Here passengers can disembark and look out the specially-situated windows on the platform, and on a clear day, take in the magnificent views of the Eiger and Monch.

It’s incredible to think that this railway line has been in operation for over 100 years.

The second, and newer, option is to take the Eiger Express cableway from Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier and then connect to the Jungfrau train for the final leg of the journey.

Of course, trains connect every 30 minutes from Interlaken to Grindelwald, making it a seamless journey.

Your choice of route is as follows:

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald by train

  • Interlaken to Grindelwald Bahnhof- 33 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
  • Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg – 34 minutes – operated by Wengernalp rack railway
  • Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch via Eiger Gletscher – 44 minutes – operated by Jungfrau Railways

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald by train and cableway

  • Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal – 29 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
  • Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier – 15 minutes – operated by Eiger Express cableway
  • Eiger Glacier to Jungfraujoch – 26 minutes – operated by Jungfrau Railways

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen by train

  • Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen – 22 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
  • Lauterbrunnen to Wengen – 14 minutes – operated by  Wengernalp rack railway
  • Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg – 25 minutes – operated by Wengernalp rack railway

Jungfraujoch train information

Interior of Jungfrau train

Travel time

In both the instances shown above, the Interlaken to Jungfraujoch (or Jungfraujoch – Interlaken) travel time is two hours.  You can choose to disembark at any of the stops along the way and reboard a later train.

All passengers are required to disembark at Kleine Scheidegg and board the Jungfrau train for the final leg of the journey.

The train to Jungfraujoch operates 365 days a year.  There are twenty trains per day from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, departing at 5 minutes past the hour and 35 minutes past the hour from 06:35 until 16:35.  The final train from Jungfraujoch – Interlaken departs at 18:43.

You can view a Jungfraujoch Timetable here .

Seat reservations

All carriages are 2nd class and offer ‘free seating’ meaning you can sit in any available seat.

However, if you are travelling during the summer months, it is highly recommended that you purchase a seat reservation for the sector from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch and return.

Passengers who hold a seat reservation are entitled to separate boarding and, whilst no specific seats are allocated, a seat is guaranteed on this sector.

This means you can nominate the exact time you wish to travel from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch and return.

Seat reservations cost CHF 10 per person return and can be purchased at the station prior to commencement of your journey.

Onboard facilities

None of the trains operating from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch have snack bars and the Jungfraubahn from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch does not have toilets on board.

Wheelchair accessibility

All trains operating on the Jungfraujoch line are wheelchair accessible. If you or a companion are in a wheelchair, you should advise staff at the station from which you depart so that someone is waiting to assist you to change trains at Kleine Scheidegg.

Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher

An alternative means of reaching Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald is now available.

Opened in December 2020, the Eiger Express Cableway operates between Grindelwald and Eiger Glacier.

The cable way, which covers a distance of 6.4 kilometres, whisks passengers to the Glacier station in just 15 minutes, where they will connect with the Jungfraujoch train for the final leg of the journey.

Passengers who travel from Grindelwald – Jungfraujoch via the cableway will reach Top of Europe 47 minutes faster than those who travel the entire journey by train.

The Eiger Express consists of ultra-modern cabins with 26 seats. Each cabin offers 360-degree panoramic views.

A continuous service operates daily from around 8am to 4pm. The cableway is Closed for maintenance for five days in early to mid-November.

Where to buy Jungfraujoch Tickets

I always like to buy my Jungfraujoch tickets in advance as that means I’ve got a large expense out of the way and it makes my day-to-day trip budget easier to manage. You can, however, purchase tickets at any railway station in the Jungfrau region.

If you’d like to pre-purchase your Jungfraujoch ticket (remember, tickets are fully refundable up to 24 hours prior to travel), I recommend you use the following authorised ticket sellers:

  • Regular return ticket from Interlaken – BUY HERE
  • Regular return ticket from Lauterbrunnen – BUY HERE
  • Regular return ticket from Grindelwald – BUY HERE
  • Discounted Jungfraujoch ticket for Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card holders – BUY HERE

For holders of a Jungfrau Travel Pass, Berner Oberland Pass or Eurail Pass , you should purchase your supplement for the Jungfraujoch train at any station in the Jungfrau region.

Things to do at Jungfraujoch Switzerland

Whilst the spectacular train ride to reach Top of Europe is the reason most visitors make the trip, there are plenty of Jungfraujoch activities to enjoy at the summit, too.

Below you’ll find details of the various exhibitions and attractions on offer at Top of Europe.  If you are visiting Jungfraujoch in summer, there is the added bonus of the Snow Fun Park activities.

All other exhibitions and attractions are open 365 days a year unless otherwise noted.

Aletsch Glacier

Aletsch Glacier

One of the highlights of any trip to Jungfraujoch is the opportunity to view the incredible Aletsch Glacier. The highest glacier in Europe, Aletsch Glacier stretches for 23 kilometres from the Jungfrau to a plateau above the Rhone Valley.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is two kilometres wide at its widest point and is one of the most breathtaking views you’re likely to see.

Jungfraujoch Ice Palace

Created in 1930 by mountain guides using picks and saws, the Ice Palace features an incredible display of ice carvings.  Regularly changed – they do melt, even at -3℃ – you might see a bear, a penguin or even an eagle.

Alpine Sensation

Jungfrau Top of Europe Alpine Sensation

Connecting the Ice Palace and the Sphinx Hall, a 250 metre long tunnel showcases the history of the Jungfrau railway and the development of tourism in the Alps.

A moving walkway will transport you through the exhibition but be warned – it’s very cold in here so bring warm clothes.

Lindt Chocolate Shop

No visit to Switzerland is complete without a chocolate tasting experience so why should it be any different at Jungfraujoch?

Not only can you try and buy delicious Lindt chocolates at the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven at Top of Europe, you can also turn the handle of the mixing machine and watch a virtual chocolate-making display.

Sphinx Observatory

Sphinx Observatory, Top of Europe

Principally an international research station, visitors to Jungfraujoch can enjoy the stunning views that the Sphinx Observatory offers.

An elevator, which climbs 108 metres in just 25 seconds, whisks visitors to the viewing platform where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding Alps.

Top of Europe Shops

Looking for the perfect gift or a memento of your visit?  The Top of Europe shops offer a great selection of clothing, watches, pocket knives and other souvenirs.

They also stock a selection of essentials that you might have forgotten to pack including sunscreen, gloves and hats.

Snow Fun Park

Snow Fun Park, Jungfrau - Top of Europe

There are plenty of fun snow activities to be enjoyed by all ages at the Jungfraujoch summer Snow Fun Park.  Activities available include snow tubing, sledging, skiing, snowboarding as well as the Tyrolienne flying fox.

All-day tickets, which cover all activities, can be purchased, or you can buy tickets for individual activities.

Prices for Snow Fun Park activities (prices still to be confirmed for 2024) :

Open : Middle of May until middle of October

Omega Hole in One golf

Fancy yourself as a pro golfer? If you can prove it by hitting a hole in one at the Omega Hole in One, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful Omega Swiss watch!

CHF 10 entitles you to three attempts at hitting a hole in one.  Tee off in the snow towards the Aletsch Glacier – land the ball in the hole 75 metres away and you’re a winner.

Open: in good weather from July to October

Jungfraujoch Restaurants

Restaurant Eiger, Jungfrau Top of Europe

All that activity and high altitude (remember, the Jungfraujoch height is 3,454 metres above sea level!) is bound to make you hungry.  Fortunately, there are plenty of dining options at Jungfraujoch.

Restaurant Crystal

Open year round, Restaurant Crystal is an a la carte restaurant offering a delicious array of meals.

Restaurant Aletsch

Lighter, but no less tasty, meals can be enjoyed year round at Restaurant Aletsch.

Restaurant Bollywood

If you prefer a more relaxed, self-service style eatery, Restaurant Bollywood should be your choice.  Offering a selection of authentic Indian dishes, the restaurant is open from early April to the end of October.

Grab a snack, a pastry or a coffee at the Coffee Bar which you’ll find in the entrance hall of the Jungfraujoch railway station. Open year round.

Enjoy a cold beer, a hot chocolate or an aperitif year round at the Sphinx Bar located next to the Sphinx Observatory’s terrace and overlooking the Aletsch Glacier.

How long should you spend at Jungfraujoch – the Top of Europe?

Jungfraujoch map

I recommend you spend at least three hours at Jungfraujoch. The Top of Europe complex is built on a number of different levels and it takes some time to visit the Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation and Sphinx Observatory.

If you go outside and visit the Snow Fun Park, you will be walking on snow so you won’t want to rush and risk falling over.

Try to put aside a whole day for your visit so that you can experience all the activities and exhibitions, and enjoy a leisurely lunch, without being rushed.

Jungfraujoch opening hours

Jungfraujoch is open 365 days a year.

Jungfraujoch Weather

The Jungfrau train travelling near Kleine Scheidegg during winter

At 3,454 metres above sea level, you can expect the Jungfraujoch temperature to be cool! The average temperature is -7.9°C, so dress accordingly.

A couple of tips about the weather:

Jungfraujoch conditions can be very different to the weather conditions in the valley.  I’ve been in Lauterbrunnen when it has been raining and overcast but by the time I’ve reached Jungfraujoch, it’s been gloriously sunny with not a cloud in the sky.

Weather conditions can also change very quickly in the mountains so you should be prepared for rain even if it’s not expected.

A great way to check the current weather conditions at Top of Europe is to watch live images from one of the Jungfraujoch webcams which are located in Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Wengen, amongst other places.

Local Tourist Offices, railway stations and some hotels display the webcams. Jungfraujoch is the region’s most popular excursion so it is easy to find out the current weather conditions.

Final Thoughts

I hope you have found this guide to visiting Jungfraujoch Top of Europe helpful. You now know where to buy Jungfraujoch tickets, how often the trains run, what to do at Jungfraujoch – and much more.

To summarise, Jungfraubahn tickets can be purchased individually, or discounted tickets can be purchased by holders of the various travel passes available.

Independent travel is popular but guided tours from Interlaken, Zurich and Lucerne are also available.

Alpine sensation

A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250 metre long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. Not only because of the frosty temperatures, but also because of the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. 30 memorial tablets bear witness to this. The music on the way also gives you goosebumps: It brings back to life the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Even if visitors are more comfortable today than the miners were – they feel relieved when, at the end of the experience, they can pose in front of the giant snow globe and say: I made it!
