Order Your Indiana Trip & Fuel Permits

Out-of-the ordinary service for your out-of-state trips.

If one of your vehicles is traveling interstate and isn’t registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP), you’ll need to order a temporary trip permit. 

An Indiana trip permit is needed if your vehicle is traveling out of state and any of these apply:

  • Your vehicle isn’t registered under IRP
  • Your vehicle has 3 or more axles
  • Your vehicle has a gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.
  • Your tow vehicle and trailer have a combined gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.

Fueling Your Company’s Compliance

If your vehicle doesn’t have an IFTA decal and license for the states or Canadian provinces it’ll be travelling in, you’ll likely need a fuel permit for that vehicle. 

You need an Indiana fuel permit if your vehicle is traveling out of state and any of these apply:

  • Your vehicle is not registered under IFTA
  • Your power unit has 3 or more axles
  • Your power unit has 2 axles and a gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.

Trip Permits

A temporary permit is needed if the following vehicles cross state lines without International Registration Plan (IRP) credentials:

Vehicles with gross weights, combined gross weights, or registered weights over 26,000 pounds;

A vehicle that has 3 or more axles regardless of weight.

Fuel Permits

A temporary permit is needed if the following vehicles cross state lines without IFTA credentials and license for the states or Canadian provinces it'll be traveling in:

Vehicles with 2 axles and gross weights, combined gross weights, or registered weights over 26,000 pounds;

A power unit that has 3 or more axles regardless of weight

Specialty Permits

A mileage permit may be needed when operating in KY, NM, NY, OR, & CT. Highway Use Tax (HUT) permit may be needed when traveling in New York. Other specialty permits may include a Georgia amber light permit, a New Jersey alcohol permit, or a Florida loading zone permit.

2022 Indiana Code Title 9. Motor Vehicles Article 18.1. Motor Vehicle Registration Chapter 13. Department of State Revenue Registrations and Permits 9-18.1-13-5. Trip Permit; Violation

Sec. 5. (a) A trip permit may be issued for:

(1) a vehicle that could be operated in Indiana for a period of seventy-two (72) hours instead of full registration; and

(2) both interstate and intrastate travel.

(b) A trip permit may not be used to evade full registration.

(c) The department of state revenue or agents for the department of state revenue may issue trip permits under rules adopted under IC 4-22-2.

(d) A person that uses a trip permit:

(1) for a period greater than seventy-two (72) hours; or

(2) to evade full registration;

commits a Class C infraction.

Indiana IRP & IFTA (IN Trip & Fuel)

The Indiana DMV offers 72 hour trip permits authorizing travel in Indiana for any vehicle that is subject to the International Registration Plan (IRP) and 5 day fuel permits for any vehicle that is subject to the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) but is not registered under these programs.

Do I Need a Trip and/or Fuel Permit?

Required for carriers based outside of Indiana that do not have IRP plates or an IFTA sticker.

Must have prior to entry into Indiana and is valid in Indiana only.

State Pricing for Trip Permits

Indiana Trip Permit - $60.99

Expiration Time - 72 hours, upon expiration of 72 hours from the effective time shown, this permit is void.

Coast2Coast and the State of Indiana does not provide refunds once permit is issued.

State Pricing for Fuel Permits

Indiana Fuel Permit - $95.99

Expiration Time - 5 days, upon expiration of 5 days from the effective time shown, this permit is void.

When is an IRP and / or IFTA Permit Required?

Carrier operates in two or more jurisdictions.

The power unit licensing weight is 26,001 lbs., or higher.

The power unit has more than two axles regardless of licensed weight.

The power unit is used in combination and the said combination is 26,001 lbs. or higher.

Permits are vehicle specific.

Permits are valid for 72 hours/3 days [trip] and 5 days [fuel].

Permits are mandatory before entering into other jurisdictions for vehicles that are non IRP/IFTA registered and do not meet the size/weight limitations.

Trip Permits

A trip permit is a temporary permit issued in lieu of IRP credentials for registered vehicles to operate in a non-IRP registered location. Permit must be obtained before entering the other jurisdictions.

Fuel Permits

Carriers must hold a temporary fuel permit before entering a jurisdiction in which they are not permitted to operate in a location without an IFTA decal and license.

You must obtain an oversize permit or overweight permit from TxDMV if your vehicle and/or load exceeds Texas legal size and weight limits . Customers may apply for, and self-issue selected single-trip and time-based permits through TxPROS.

Oversize and Overweight Permits

To permit a vehicle with over-dimensional (oversize) or overweight must obtain an oversize/overweight permit authorizing the movement of the vehicle in other jurisdictions.
