19 Reasons to Visit Georgia in Spring: Wildflowers, New Wine & Easter Traditions

From wading through wildflower meadows and observing fascinating Orthodox Easter traditions to drinking new season wine and eating special dishes, spring is a blooming good time to visit Georgia .

In Georgia , the months of March, April and May are filled with special festivities, spring traditions and pre-summer rituals.

The whole country has an upbeat post- winter feel – it’s hard not to be happy when the cherry blossoms are blooming and the church bells are ringing.

A woman admires pink blossom flowers in Batumi, Georgia.

Yes, the weather can be wet and unpredictable, and there are a few sacrifices you’ll have to make. Heavy spring rain and snow melt can lead to swollen rivers and landslides in the mountains, making some routes even more treacherous. Even if the roads open early, I highly recommend you save places such as Tusheti and Khevsureti for summer.

In my opinion, the pros of visiting Georgia in spring outweigh the cons. Areas that become crowded during summer are still nice and quiet in spring, there are wonderful Easter traditions on show, and the markets are overflowing with vibrant fruit, veg and new season wines.

Here are 19 good reasons to visit Georgia in spring plus a few travel tips.

Which month is best for visiting Georgia in spring?

When it comes to the weather, spring is a bit of a mixed bag. Temperatures and conditions vary dramatically from the cities to the mountains and the coast.

March in Georgia

March is a transition month in Georgia and the weather is always a bit taciturn. Generally speaking, temperatures sit at around 7-12 degrees Celsius in Tbilisi , Batumi, Kutaisi and the lowlands, while the mountain regions are still frosty.

Snowfall remains steady at the ski resorts throughout March, making this one of the best months for skiing and snowboarding in Georgia . Some high mountain areas including Tusheti, Khevsureti and potentially Upper Adjara are inaccessible.

March snow in Tbilisi and Kutaisi is not unheard of! Or it might be sunny and warm – it really is difficult to predict.

April in Georgia

April is the definitive start of spring in Georgia. Days are noticeably warmer – the mercury rises above 10 degrees Celsius in Tbilisi and stays there – while nights are still brisk. Cherry and magnolia trees start to bloom in the cities and beyond.

Kutaisi, Batumi and the west of the country are a little warmer still (up to 20 degrees), but always a little rainy. Heavy showers and storms are common in Tbilisi, too.

May in Georgia

By May, temperatures reach the mid-20s in Kutaisi and Tbilisi. Hiking trails start to become available at lower elevations, and by late May or early June, the road to Tusheti opens.

May is traditionally the wettest month of the year in Georgia, so you should always be prepared for rain.

19 special things to do in spring in Georgia

Georgia throws off her winter coat, a whole host of special activities and events to welcome spring. Here are a few of my favourite things to see and do.

1. Bask in cherry, peach & magnolia blossoms

Pink spring flowers in front of a statue in Batumi, Georgia.

Georgia might not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of cherry blossoms, but there is a surprisingly large number of cherry trees (plus peach and almond blossoms, and beautiful magnolias) here.

Tbilisi’s parks are festooned with white and pink blossoms in spring. The big tree outside Cafe Leila in the Old Town is an icon and a personal favourite of mine.

Other places to see the blossoms in Tbilisi include:

  • The Botanical Garden (especially the Japanese Garden)
  • Rike Park (near the Bridge of Peace)
  • 9 April Park (opposite the Presidential Palace)

The most famous blossom tree in Georgia is located in Kutaisi , at the end of the Red Bridge outside the aptly named Hotel Magnolia. It’s said that spring has not truly sprung in Georgia until this tree shows off its bountiful blossoms!

A magnolia tree frames the Rioni River and houses in Kutaisi.

You can also see tons of blossoms in Batumi, including in the small park outside the theatre (pictured above, with the statue of Ilia Chavchavadze).

Wisteria trees bloom all over Georgia, too – including inside the National Botanical Garden in Tbilisi (check out these gorgeous photos taken in spring 2024) and in Kutaisi city.

The two photos above were taken near my local hardware shop in Kutaisi! Wisteria blooms a little later than the peach, cherry and magnolia trees – towards the middle of spring.

2. Go searching for wildflowers

Fields of wild poppies in Marneuli, Georgia.

The Caucasus region is a biodiversity hotspot , with more than 1,600 endemic plants – including many that flower. Certain parts of Georgia are synonymous with wildflowers, and in spring you can see gorgeous colours in several areas.

Popular wildflower spots include:

  • Poppy fields near Marneuli (pictured above)
  • Wild orchids near Bakuriani
  • Chamomile fields near Algeti National Park

Other areas at higher altitudes come into bloom a bit later. Svaneti’s flowery meadows and the incredible wildflowers in the Didgori Valley , for example, blossom from June onwards.

Wildflowers can be found on the high-altitude Javakheti Plateau all through the summer months. Find more places to see wildflowers in Georgia in my guide.

Though they are not wildflowers, the peach and almond blossoms in Kakheti are also very beautiful. There are a lot of fruit orchards around Gurjaani , particularly in the village of Chumlaki, and for almond blossoms you can visit the regenerative farm in Udabno.

The best time to visit Kakheti for the blossoms is in the final days of March. I took the two photos above in the second week of April, as the last flowers of the season were falling.

3. Visit David Gareja & Vashlovani National Park

Craggy peaks and colours in Vashlovani National Park.

The arid semi-deserts south and south-east of Tbilisi are among Georgia’s most unique landscapes . Especially in contrast to the fertile Alazani River Valley and the high peaks of the Greater Caucasus, which are not all that far away!

April/May is the ideal window to visit this part of the country as the open, barren land is not yet too hot (temperatures soar in summer, making it very hard going).

One of the best day trips from Tbilisi in spring is to David Gareja cave monastery and the rainbow hills of Udabno. Some parts of the monastery are closed, so make sure you read up first on what to expect .

For a multi-day overlanding adventure, Vashlovani National Park – with its dramatic gorges and mud volcanoes – is a perfect choice for spring.

4. Catch the end of the ski season in Gudauri or Bakuriani

The Kobi Gudauri cable car runs through a mountain valley beneath Mount Kazbek in Gudauri, Georgia.

Georgia’s winter sports season lasts until mid-April most years, with March being one of the best months overall for skiing and snowboarding.

Sometimes winter arrives late (as it did in 2022/23) and there wasn’t much snow until February. In early spring, there’s a higher chance of good snow coverage and more runs being open.

Popular ski resorts Bakuriani and Gudauri stay open through to April, while the slopes in Svaneti and Upper Adjara – which are even higher – might even keep welcoming guests into early May.

If you find yourself in Gudauri, be sure to ride the Kobi-Gudauri Cable Car for majestic views of Mount Kazbek (fingers crossed for clear blue spring skies!).

5. Hike in Borjomi, Lagodekhi or Kazbegi, a must-do in spring in Georgia

Gergeti Trinity Church viewed from behind a grassy hill in spring in Kazbegi.

While the high mountain regions of Tusheti and Khevsureti remain closed off in spring, there are plenty of hiking opportunities in the lowlands.

One of the best things about visiting Tbilisi in spring is that the landscapes around the city are verdantly green. By late June, everything is already parched and grey.

Hiking trails in Svaneti and Racha don’t open until June (or the last week of May at the very earliest), but trekking should be available in the Juta Valley and Truso Valley near Kazbegi from the start of May onwards. For Tusheti, you will have to wait until the end of June or start of July.

I once did the Gergeti Trinity Church hike in April – it was a little brown, but the cooler weather made it very enjoyable.

Two more national parks – Borjomi-Kharagauli in Southern Georgia and Lagodekhi in Kakheti – are particularly well-suited to spring hiking. Borjomi is all pine forest, while Lagodekhi is a subtropical rainforest with cascading waterfalls and beautiful rivers. It’s best to visit the latter from April onwards when the water levels recede.

In spring you can enjoy most of these day hikes around Tbilisi , with Rkoni (near Gori ) and Birtvisi Canyon in Kvemo Kartli being particularly perfect.

6. Lounge in an open-air hot spring

A woman sits in a sulfur pool in Vani, Georgia.

Spring is the ideal time to visit Georgia’s natural hot springs and open-air mineral water pools. There are dozens of them across the country, ranging from icy cold to scalding hot. Nothing beats a steamy sulfur bath session on a cool spring evening.

Beyond the famous Tbilisi Sulfur Baths , you can find natural pools tucked away in the mountains and forests, and even unusual sulfur ponds in the middle of farmers’ fields.

My favourites include the sulfur spring near Vani and the cascading sulfur waterfall at Nokalakevi – both of which are easy to reach on a day trip from Kutaisi.

7. Visit the Batumi Botanical Garden

A man stands on a green tree bridge inside Batumi Botnical Garden.

Speaking of easy hiking trails… Batumi’s Botanical Garden – one of the oldest and largest in the region – is a must-do in spring. You’ll find the walking paths and easy forested trails are much quieter compared to summer. Flowers are blooming, and beekeepers are tending their hives.

Batumi is normally quite rainy during the spring months, but the weather does stabilise a bit towards the end of the season as summer approaches. The city is much more pleasant outside of the high season when the population swells with summer tourists – and by May, it might even be warm enough to swim.

If you’re in the area, also consider a visit to the Dendrological Park in Shekvetili, which is similarly lovely in spring.

8. Bird watch in Javakheti or Kolkheti

A man looks through a telescope while birdwatching in Georgia's Javakheti region.

The months of April and May are prime birdwatching time in Georgia, when many ornithologists flock to the country to observe endemic and migratory birds.

The ‘big five’ for birders are the Caucasian snowcock, Caucasian black grouse, Caucasian chiffchaff, great rosefinch and Güldenstädt’s redstart – but there are dozens of species that nest in Georgia, from choughs to larks, bearded vultures to golden eagles, ad even peregrine falcons.

Believe it or not, Georgia even has flamingos!

A favourite spot for birdwatching is the sparkling Javakheti Protected Areas , where sparkling lakes are framed by the peaks of dormant volcanoes. Up to 140 species of birds can be observed here, starting from April. If you’re in the area, stop by the unique Doukhobor village of Gorelovka , where turquoise houses painted with floral motifs are spring incarnate.

Kolkheti National Park on the Black Sea Coast, with its winding waterways and incredible wetlands , is also a top choice. Even if you’re not interested in birds per se, cruising this Amazon-like landscape in a powerboat – Georgian style – is a truly unique experience.

9. Attend midnight Liturgy for Orthodox Easter & observe other Easter traditions

A woman lights a candle at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

Spring in Georgia revolves around Orthodox Easter, which is by far the most significant religious holiday of the year. Unlike Christmas and New Year which is always a riot of parties and fireworks, Easter is a family oriented event and is much more subdued.

Easter falls a week or so later than on the Roman Catholic calendar. Red Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Bright Monday are all public holidays in Georgia, and some smaller restaurants and shops – plus museums – are closed.

The best way for outsiders to get involved in the festivities is by joining the midnight mass, which starts from around 11pm on the Saturday evening and goes until the early hours of Easter Sunday morning. You can hear resplendent chanting and take part in the ritual of walking around the church three times. Sameba Cathedral in Tbilisi hosts the biggest event, but every church in the country holds mass so you can join from anywhere.

There are other Orthodox traditions that you can observe in Tbilisi and around Georgia. On Palm Sunday (Bzoba), look out for sprigs of boxwood being sold on the street. Traditionally people buy these fronds (sometimes sold in little woven baskets) and take them to be blessed by the priest before displaying them at home for Easter.

In the weeks before Easter, look out for paska, a dense and dry fruit cake , being sold at bakeries. Another tradition is dying eggs red with madder root and displaying them at home with green wheatgrass.

You will see these items sold on the streets and in markets all over Tbilisi and beyond.

10. Watch the Berikaoba parade in Kakheti

A mosaic in Tbilisi depicts the springtime Berikaoba ritual.

Once celebrated across the country, Berikaoba is still observed in a couple of villages in Kakheti region, with the biggest and most colourful events in Didi Chailuri, 65 kilometres east of Tbilisi. The festival has pagan/pre/para-Christian roots and is marked at the beginning of spring to symbolise abundance, rebirth and fertility.

Berikaoba has some similarities to the Surva Festival in Bulgaria . For the one-day celebration, townsfolk don elaborate costumes and menacing masks and parade down the village’s main street. Chidaoba wrestling matches, feasting and folk music are also part of the fun.

In Tbilisi, there’s a statue dedicated to Berikaoba near the Clock Tower and Baratashvili Bridge, and a Soviet-era mosaic that depicts the festival.

The dates for Berikaoba change every year. In 2024, Berikaoba falls on March 17.

11. Join the scrum at Lelo Burti in Guria

A crowd of people gathered for the Lelo Burti festival in Georgia on Orthodox Sunday.

Lelo Burti is an incredible spectacle – and it only takes place one day a year on Orthodox Easter Sunday in one village, Shukhuti in Guria, around an hour’s drive west of Kutaisi.

Lelo Burti is a full-contact, rugby-like sport that sees two villages, Zemo and Kvemo Shukhuti, go head to head. They use a 15 kg ball made from sand and dirt soaked in wine. The aim of the game is to carry said ball 500 metres over to the rival village’s stream. Whoever crosses first is declared the winner and that village holds the trophy for the next year.

Live music, food, and a market with local produce are also staged as part of the celebrations. I attended Lelo Burti in 2022 and made a video about it – you can watch the short film here .

While you’re in lovely Guria region , be sure to stay a few extra days and explore the tea fields, which are popping green in spring.

12. Celebrate Gviriloba in Kutaisi

A group of children playing traditional folk music and dancing on a stage at the Kutaisoba Festival.

Special ‘day of’ festivals are held across Georgia throughout the warmer months for different cities, towns and villages. The first major festival of the year, Gviriloba AKA Kutaisoba, takes place in Kutaisi every year on May 2.

Gviriloba celebrates all things Kutaisi, with live music and pop-up markets showcasing Imeretian wine , food and local handicrafts. It normally takes place in the city centre.

A pot of chamomile flowers on the street in Kutaisi, Georgia.

This tradition goes back to the beginning of the 20th century when Kutaisi schoolgirls sold chamomile (gvirila) flowers on the streets to raise money for the tuberculosis hospital.

The flower is a symbol of the city (notice how it’s painted on the zebra crossings?). That’s why you’ll see many festival goers with white flowers pinned in their hair and girls dressed in retro school uniforms handing out little bunches of flowers.

13. Sip vino at the Zero Compromise natural wine festival in Tbilisi

Bottles of Georgian wine on a table at a vineyard in Kakheti.

When spring arrives, winemakers crack open last year’s clay qvevri for the first taste of the previous harvest.

It’s an auspicious time of year in Kakheti, where the majority of Georgia’s vineyards are located. A few Kakheti wineries , including TEMI, offer qvevri opening experiences and allow you to taste wine directly from the clay vessel.

In the vineyards, you can see the grape vines starting to bud.

Zero Compromise is one of several wine festivals that takes place in Tbilisi every spring. This year, dozens of winemakers – all members of the Natural Wine Association – will gather at Artarea on May 9 and 10 to show off their latest wares.

It’s a big wine weekend, with the New Wine Festival held on May 11, and the inaugural Sherekilebi Wine Salon on May 12.

Find more information about buying tickets here on the 2024 Zero Compromise event Facebook Page .

14. Do a ‘first flush’ Georgian tea tasting

A woman pours Georgian tea from a glass teapot into cups on her farm in Guria region.

Not only is spring one of the best times of the year to drink Georgian wine (see the next item on this list), it’s also the time to try Georgian tea. Not that you needed an excuse for either!

Tea grows abundantly in Western Georgia. The first of three annual harvests happens around the middle of April, when the first buds of the year are plucked. Spring flush tea is naturally sweet and nutrient-dense, with a smooth and delicate taste.

Two excellent places for a tea tasting are at Komli in Guria and the Renegade Estate near Kutaisi. Both have tea plantations so you can observe the full bush-to-pot process before sampling the goods. If you can’t make it out west, request to try spring teas at the Bitadze Tea Shop and Museum in Tbilisi’s Sololaki neighbourhood .

15. Eat chakapuli, a special springtime stew

A dish of Georgian Chakapuli, a stew of lamb, green plum and tarragon.

Several Georgian dishes are synonymous with springtime, but none is more important or beloved than chakapuli. This ambrosial stew is traditionally prepared with lamb and has a very unique flavour profile thanks to the addition of tarragon (lots and lots of tarragon). White wine and unripe, tart green plums are also in the mix. Essentially it’s springtime in a bowl.

Chakapuli is eaten almost everywhere, but it is closely associated with Kakheti in Eastern Georgia. These days you can order it any time – but if you happen to be in Georgia around Orthodox Easter, these are the best weeks of the year to try it.

Eat it in the wine region or (if you’re lucky enough to score an invite) in a family home. Otherwise your best bet is a restaurant in Tbilisi that specialises in Kakhetian fare, such as Kakhelebi on Beliashvili. Some places including Living Vino in Sololaki do a special vegetarian-friendly version with mushrooms.

16. Buy malina martskvi by the bucketload

Raspberry strawberries, a spring delicacy in Georgia.

Malina martskvi or ‘raspberry strawberries’ are a spring phenomenon that everyone gets excited about. When these babies appear at the bazari market , you know the spring-summer fruit season is about to begin.

In Russian, ‘malina’ means raspberry and in Georgian, ‘martskhvi’ means strawberry. As the name suggests, these miniature strawberries are something of a hybrid (though not actually) – smaller and sweeter than regular berries. They are little flavour bombs.

You can usually find them in markets in Tbilisi and beyond from late April onwards. The going rate is around 3-5 GEL per kilo. They do spoil quickly, so you have to eat them fast (or if you can, freeze them for later).

17. Join the street festival in Tbilisi on Independence Day

May 26 is Independence Day in Georgia and an official public holiday. It commemorates the adoption of the Act of Independence in 1918, which ushered in the short-lived Democratic Republic of Georgia.

Events are held around the country in commemoration. In Tbilisi, part of Rustaveli Avenue is closed off for a big food and craft market, live music and a fireworks display.

18. Mark Victory Day in Vake Park

Vake Park, a large green space with a WWII memorial and a commemorative fountain in Tbilisi, Georgia.

May 9 is a national holiday in Georgia, and in other countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union . Victory Day commemorates the USSR’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.

While other countries mark Victory in Europe Day on May 8, in this part of the world the holiday falls a day later – the reason being that the German Instrument of Surrender was signed late in the evening, on May 9 Moscow time.

It’s estimated that more than 700,000 Georgians served in the Great Patriotic War – and more than half of them perished on the battlefield. Thus Victory Day is a sombre affair in Georgia.

There are WWII memorials scattered all over the country and on this day, people from the city/town/village will usually gather there to pay tribute to those who never returned home by laying flower wreaths.

The main Victory Day event is held in Tbilisi’s Vake Park at the foot of the Great Patriotic War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

19. Observe the incredible Tusheti Transhumance

A flock of sheep walks along a river surrounded by snow in Georgia's Kakheti region.

The high mountain road to Tusheti is completely sealed off in winter and reopens every year at some point in late May, marking the official start of the season. Families who winter in the Alazani Valley return to their high-altitude villages, and shepherds lead their flocks back up to pasture.

As soon as the notorious Abano Pass is navigable, shepherds hit the trail, travelling by horseback with a caravan of dogs and horses and their huge flocks of sheep – which stretch out like a white ribbon along the steep mountain roads.

Known as the Tusheti Transhumance, this annual migration cycle is incredibly taxing and for those who are lucky enough to observe it, utterly beautiful. Some smaller tour companies and independent guides organise special transhumance experiences where tourists can observe the migration safely.

The road to Tusheti normally opens to traffic a few weeks later in June. Come October , families do it all again – only in reverse.

What to pack when you visit Georgia in spring

  • Warm clothing – including a jacket for nighttime
  • Waterproof shoes – especially if you plan on hiking
  • A foldable rain jacket – it’s a good idea to carry one with you at all times, even in the cities
  • A travel umbrella – it’s very unusual to see a Georgian man carrying an umbrella, but tourists are excused from this strange custom
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat – essential for late spring especially
  • Allergy medications – if applicable, see note below
  • More hints and tips in my Georgia Packing Guide

More spring travel tips

Spring can be unpredictable so you’ll definitely want to plan ahead and have a Plan B in case the weather doesn’t agree with your schedule.

Use yr.no to check the forecast, and if you’re driving around Georgia , stay updated about road closures or dangerous conditions using the Geo Road Facebook page (they also have a hotline).

If you suffer from allergies, be aware that there is often a lot of pollen and floral debris in the air towards the end of spring. This is true in Tbilisi and Kutaisi as both cities regularly experience gusting winds (Kutaisi especially).

Such great ideas, makes me excited for Spring ( although it will be a longer wait here in Boston ). The tiny doors are so cute and I always love to find fun murals. Looks like Atlanta has some great street art.

Great list. I love strawberry picking and would love to find all those tiny doors. Such a great list.

So many nice things to do in the springtime! I would really like to try strawberry picking.

Oh, I didn’t realize Georgia could be so much fun! I love everything quirky, so I think I’d enjoy the tiny doors and the botanical gardens.

Walk in the Botanical Garden

Spread across 128ha (52 acres) of land, the garden features more than 3,500 kinds of plants, both from the country and the world. Here, you can explore various pavilions, a few waterfalls, mounting bridges and more.

The territory of the current Tbilisi Botanical Garden used to belong to a royal garden back in the day. However, it transformed into a series of arboretums over the decades. The estimated date of its foundation is 1845, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens from the post-Soviet era.

Visit the two must-see museums in Tbilisi

Art lovers will enjoy a trip to the National Gallery of Georgia

Even though Tbilisi is home to many different museums , there are two that you need to visit during your trip. One is the Archaeological Treasury, which displays valuable goldsmith artefacts that were discovered during an archaeological expedition across the country. Svetitskoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are the main sights you’ll want to visit here. The first is an example of religious Medieval Georgian architecture, and it is adorned with beautiful frescoes. Jvari Monastery, located on the hill overlooking Mtskheta, is believed to be the place where St Nino, one of the men who brought Christianity to the country, installed a wooden cross during the fourth century.

Explore Georgia’s popular wine region

Covered in lush greenery, Kakheti is the most famous wine region in Georgia

Kakheti is known as the most famous wine region in Georgia. It has many vineyards that offer tours of their chateaux, factories and grounds. However, do not narrow your itinerary to just those vineyards; the region is famous for its beautiful cities and historic sights. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of Signaghi, and admire breathtaking views over the Alazani Valley. Take in the colourful timber houses with red rooftops, and enjoy the Caucasus Mountains in the background as you walk the remainder of the city wall.

On your way to Kakheti, make sure to take a small detour and visit the cave town of David Gareja. Located in the desert part of the country, the site shares a border with Azerbaijan. Founded by one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers, who spread Christianity in Georgia in the sixth century, the site is a marvellous place to explore.

Admire waterfalls in Tsalka

The emerald-green waterfall in Tsalka is a beautiful sight

The Dashbashi Canyons, located in Tsalka, are some of the most beautiful natural landmarks in the country. The emerald-green waterfall is a beautiful sight to see, no matter the time of year. Spring and summer here are a bit chilly, but the area is rich in lush green surroundings.

Stroll through the Rabati Fortress

Make sure to visit the Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia

Akhaltsikhe is home to the Rabati Fortress, a Medieval castle complex built in the ninth century. The town was previously called Lomisa, but the name supposedly changed in the 12th century. Open to visitors year-round, Rabati Fortress is particularly unique because it has Catholic, Muslim, Jewish and Orthodox places of worship sitting harmoniously in one spot.

Get lost in an ancient cave town

Vardzia is one of the most well-preserved cave towns in the country. Founded in the second half of the 12th century, the cave complex stretches along a cliff for 500m (1,640ft). Besides wandering through those caves, you can explore the Church of Dormition that still hosts a beautiful collection of frescoes .

Plan a perfect getaway to the Black Sea

Explore the Black Sea coast of Batumi, Georgia

Batumi is more of a summer destination for many locals, and, as such, the city gets quite busy and overcrowded. So, if you like to visit places in the mid or off-season, visiting Batumi in the spring is not a bad idea at all. The prices are much lower, while the weather is still warm and sunny. Stroll down the Boulevard, and admire different statues and historic monuments, and try the famous adjaruli khachapuri (a Georgian cheese bread).

15 Best Places to Visit in Georgia — From Charming Mountain Towns to Sandy Beaches

The best places to visit in Georgia range from bustling college towns to barrier islands with wild horses and unspoiled beaches.

georgia places to visit in spring

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

While the state of Georgia may be synonymous with peaches and resounding chants of “Go Dawgs,” it’s also a region filled with history, charming small towns , bustling cities, and an incredible amount of biodiversity. There’s a high chance you’ve found yourself passing through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — it is the busiest airport in the world , after all — but you’ll need to make your way outside of the terminals in order to experience the quaint bookstores of Savannah and the adrenaline-pumping hikes in Tallulah Gorge. During the hot, muggy summer months, nothing beats a dip in Lake Oconee or an oceanfront breeze on Tybee Island .

With so many amazing places within Georgia’s nearly 60,000 square miles, it can be hard to narrow down your must-see list — so we did it for you. From the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains to the picturesque beaches of the Golden Isles, here are the best places to visit in Georgia.

Starcevic/Getty Images

Famous for its highly walkable Historic Landmark District, Savannah is one of those rare cities that’s just as beautiful in person as it is in stylized, perfectly lit pictures. Its cobbled streets, tree-lined squares and parks, and gorgeous 18th and 19th-century buildings make it one of the South’s most photogenic cities — not to mention, its culinary scene is one of the best in the region. Be sure to grab an espresso from The Paris Market Cafe , pick up a new novel from E Shaver Booksellers , go on a ghost tour , and tuck into a meal at Chef Mashama Bailey’s The Grey .

You don’t need to be a die-hard University of Georgia fan to visit Athens, although we wouldn’t recommend going during football season if you’re rooting for the other team. Outside of sports, the college town has a lively music scene, numerous craft breweries, and a variety of family-friendly activities, including the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and Bear Hollow Zoo .

Lake Oconee

lillisphotography/Getty Images

A boat day is the perfect antidote to Georgia’s humid summers, and you’ll find plenty of respite from the oppressive heat on Lake Oconee. Halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, the man-made lake offers opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, and water sports. It’s also the backdrop for the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee , which hosts the Lake Oconee Food & Wine Festival every year.

Cumberland Island

Frank Staub/Getty Images

Accessible only by ferry or boat (although public docking is temporarily prohibited), Cumberland Island is one of the most majestic places on the East Coast . Wild horses, historic ruins, long stretches of untouched beaches, marshes, and maritime forests can be found on the 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated wilderness. Its remoteness and sheer beauty were, no doubt, two of the reasons it served as John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding locale in 1996.

Pgiam/Getty Images

It’ll take more than just one trip to hit all of Atlanta’s hot spots, so return visits are recommended if you want to see everything the capital city has to offer. First-timers, however, should make sure to reserve tickets to the Georgia Aquarium (the largest aquarium in the United States), have a meal at Ponce City Market , check out a Braves game at Truist Park, and stop by the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park , which includes the home where the Civil Rights leader was born, the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the resting place of both King and his wife, Coretta Scott King.

chadscc/Getty Images

You’ll only need to drive about an hour north of Atlanta to make it to Dahlonega, the site of America’s first gold rush and the setting of quite a few Christmas movies . The small town lies in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its charm leaks into every aspect of the area — from its art galleries and boutiques to its various wineries and vineyards. Dahlonega is also in the heart of Georgia’s wine country, boasting incredible spots like Cavender Creek Vineyards & Winery , Wolf Mountain , and Montaluce Winery & Restaurant .

Each of Georgia’s Golden Isles has a distinct personality, and Sea Island is, by far, the grandest of the four. Resort reservations are required to get past the gates (unless you’re a Sea Island Club member), but once you do, you’ll find complete paradise. The Cloister at Sea Island is probably the most recognizable sight on the 5-mile-long island, but there are also pristine beaches, championship golf courses, a tennis club, and a world-class clay shooting school.

Jekyll Island

rodclementphotography/Getty Images

In the winter months of the Industrial Age, the Rockefellers, Morgans, and Vanderbilts (among other wealthy families) ventured to Jekyll Island . Today, its draw is still strong, thanks to its stunning landscape, culinary feats, and concerted effort to preserve the land. Whether you’re staying at the storied Jekyll Island Club Resort or pitching a tent at the Jekyll Island Campground , the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the otherworldly Driftwood Beach deserve spots on your itinerary.

Ralph Daniel/Explore Georgia

When the mountains are calling, a trip to Blue Ridge, Georgia just might be the answer. Like many mountain towns, Blue Ridge has a thriving arts scene as well as seemingly endless outdoor activities. If you’d prefer to explore the area by train, hop on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway at the historic depot downtown for an out-and-back adventure along the Toccoa River.

Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest

Laura Clay-Ballard/Getty Images

Georgia’s mountains refuse to be overshadowed by its spectacular beaches, so it’s no wonder millions of travelers make their way to the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest every year. Encompassing nearly 867,00 acres, the national forest is home to miles of freshwater streams and rivers, waterfalls, numerous campgrounds, and plenty of space to hike and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Every spring, fans of the “greatest game ever played” descend upon the city of Augusta and, more specifically, the Augusta National Golf Club. Washing down one of the famous pimento cheese sandwiches with an Azalea cocktail is basically a requirement of attending the Masters, but you can also find quintessential Southern cuisine outside of the golf club. Frog Hollow Tavern , Beck’s , and Abel Brown Southern Kitchen & Oyster Bar frequently make the “best of” Augusta restaurant lists.

Tybee Island

Melissa Kopka/Getty Images

A 20-minute drive will take you from Savannah to Tybee Island, one of the best beach towns in the South . Here, you’ll find miles of bike-friendly beaches, unparalleled sunsets, and Georgia’s tallest (and oldest) lighthouse. House rentals are easy to find, but if you’re just visiting for the weekend, book a room at the historic, recently renovated 17th Street Inn .

Tallulah Gorge State Park

Tallulah Gorge State Park is rife with heart-pumping activities, including hiking along the two-mile Tallulah Gorge. One of the most popular trails includes a staircase descent to an 80-foot suspension bridge crossing over the Tallulah River. If you’re there in the autumn, your views of the powerful river and waterfalls will be accented by the colorful foliage that covers the region.

25 miles of shoreline outline Georgia’s Lake Rabun, an isolated body of water surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. While the phrase “stepping back in time” may be clichéd, it’s also accurate — especially if you take into account the flotilla of vintage wooden boats that traverse the lake.

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Annalise Kaylor/Getty Images

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is located in the southeastern corner of Georgia, just north of Florida. The 680-square-mile wilderness can be explored by foot or by boat (guests can rent canoes and kayaks), but no inch of the refuge is the same. No matter which area you choose to visit — the forested cypress swamps or the wet "prairies" — you’ll probably see at least one of the 15,000 alligators who call the Okefenokee Swamp home.

National Center for Civil and Human Rights

Courtesy of The National Center for Civil and Human Rights

Atlanta's 42,000-square-foot National Center for Civil and Human Rights is conveniently located across from Centennial Olympic Park, in the same plaza as the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola. This museum promises a deep dive into the U.S. civil rights movement and an overview of other human rights struggles worldwide, making it one of the most informative and impactful things to do in Georgia.

The museum is grounded in the history of Atlanta – the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and home base of two vital civil rights organizations – and its civil rights gallery explores African Americans' fight for racial equality across the nation. Interactive exhibits on the entrance level and upper level allow you to participate in a simulated lunch counter sit-in, watch King's "I Have a Dream" speech and hear oral histories from the Freedom Riders on a reconstructed bus that was firebombed in 1961. The upper level also houses a gallery designed to walk visitors through various human rights campaigns and activists, while the lower level is dedicated to displaying King's personal artifacts and papers.

Visitors marvel at the multimedia experience of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where news reels and other primary sources bring history to life, and recommend spending around two hours there. Travelers caution, however, that some content – indicated by signage in certain exhibits – may not be appropriate for young children.

Address: 100 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30313

Stone Mountain Park

Top things to do in Georgia

At more than 3,200 acres, Stone Mountain Park , the most-visited attraction in Georgia, offers fun for visitors of all ages, including adventure courses, the world's longest-running laser show, a 5-mile railroad excursion, two golf courses and a Swiss cable car that takes travelers to the top of the mountain. The park is particularly known for its massive Confederate Memorial Carving, a 3-acre sculpture of three Civil War figures from the South that measures larger than Mount Rushmore. Amid calls for the monument to be removed, the park board has approved the creation of an on-site museum exhibit, set for completion around 2025, to provide context about the history of the world's largest Confederate monument and its ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

Visitors say they love the park's picturesque hikes and Historic Square, a collection of original 19th-century buildings, but warned there are separate fees for entering the park and enjoying its various attractions. You will have multiple choices for lodging in or near the park, including Stone Mountain Inn, the Atlanta Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort or a campground, but since Stone Mountain Park is less than 20 miles northeast of Atlanta, you can also opt to stay in the city and drive to the attraction.

View the highly regarded Cyclorama

Top things to do in Georgia

Cycloramas – large paintings used for a kind of three-dimensional visual storytelling – were a popular form of immersive entertainment in the 1800s. Atlanta's Cyclorama constitutes a more than 130-year-old hand-painted rendering of the 1864 Battle of Atlanta that is longer than a football field and stands almost 50 feet tall. Created in 1886, it is one of only two cycloramas in the U.S. – the other can be found in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – and has been on display in Atlanta for 130 years.

In addition to the painting, the Atlanta History Center's "Cyclorama: The Big Picture" exhibit showcases a short film alongside related artifacts and technology to examine the untold stories of the painting and the ways Civil War imagery has shaped our perspectives. Past visitors loved seeing the massive painting, describing the piece as astounding. Entry to this exhibit is included in Atlanta History Center admission.

Kennedy Jr. wed Carolyn Bessette in a secret ceremony, Cumberland Island boasts more than 17 miles of white sand beaches off the southeastern coast of mainland Georgia. This destination is accessible only by ferry, which departs from the small mainland town of St. Marys, and reservations are recommended. Cumberland Island offers a range of things to do, from tours of the former Carnegie family home and other mansion ruins to outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, swimming, fishing and stargazing.

Three beautiful places in Georgia you might not know about to visit this summer

The temperature is rising, beckoning you to go back outside. Instead of heading to the same places you went during winter, why not explore some new places in Georgia?

Thrillist listed about a dozen of the most beautiful places in the Peach State, and we’ve written about many of them. Here are three you might not know about, though.

Rock City Gardens

Rock City is more than just rocks. The Rock City Gardens feature more than 400 native species of plants and trees, with something blooming all year.

Entry is currently timed in 15-minute intervals, and tickets range from $17.95 to $26.95 for adults, and $7.95 to $16.95 for ages 3-12. The Gardens recommend buying your tickets in advance , because slots can sell out quickly. Rock City is close enough that you might want to consider a Gem membership, which will set you back $99 for adults or $79 for ages 3-12. Don’t forget to bring your four-legged family members, sho are welcome.

Just 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga, this is also a great weekend getaway destination.

Carrollton Greenbelt

You’ve walked, biked or skated every inch of the Atlanta Beltline, but have you seen the Carrollton Greenbelt ?

With 18 miles of shared use path, the Greenbelt is the largest paved loop trail system in the state of Georgia. It connects neighborhoods with the city school campus, the University of West Georgia, the city parks and several commercial shopping areas.

Carrollton is near the Georgia line with Alabama and makes a great weekend getaway or short stay on the way to vacation in our neighbor state.

Radium Springs Garden

One of Georgia’s Seven Natural Wonders, Radium Springs Gardens is about three hours from Atlanta. The springs pump 70,000 gallons of clear, 68 degree water from an underground cave every minute.

Spend the day walking through a courtyard where the Radium Springs Casino once stood. The park features a restored terrace, new sidewalks, a casino garden and gazebos.

The gardens are in Albany, home of the Flint RiverQuarium . While there, you’ll be introduced not only to fish and reptiles, but also to dozens of birds native to the Flint River Basin . The best part is the price. The RiverQuarium costs only $9 for adults and $6.50 for kids.

11 fresh ideas for spring break in 2024

georgia places to visit in spring

Need a fresh idea for spring break this year? Try somewhere unexpected, like Big Bend National Park in West Texas © Kanokwalee Pusitanun / Getty Images

February is here. The weather is getting warmer (we swear!). Summer isn’t too far off. But first? Spring break.

After long nights and gray days, the wonderful tradition of escaping the grind to somewhere usually warm and always fun lets you shake off those winter blues and look forward to the idylls to come. And spring break means much more than just flights to Florida – a place we adore, but whose population swells a bit too much for our taste each spring.

Read on for a range of destinations that you might not have thought of for the annual March/April getaway. They’re all long on fun – without the raucous college partiers. Here’s our list of the best spring break destinations for 2024.

People take a picture on a side street in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, USA

1. Asheville, North Carolina, USA

Southern charm, a live-and-let-live creative community and plenty of outdoor possibilities make Asheville one of the USA ’s most appealing places to visit – for spring break and beyond. This small city in the Appalachian foothills has the highest concentration of breweries of any place in the country, while its award-winning food scene ranges from Southern classics at Tupelo Honey to mouthwatering Spanish tapas at local favorite Cúrate .

While in Asheville, it’s hard to resist a visit to the largest mansion in the US, the Biltmore . And active spring breakers will have plenty to seek out, too: you’re at the threshold of Great Smoky Mountains National Park – the most visited one in the entire country – with miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking or spotting wildlife like black bears, elk and red-bellied woodpeckers. Outdoorsy types can also take to the peaceful French Broad River for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

People look through a viewfinder among the cacti of the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona, USA

2. Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Unless you really like the desert sun, we’d recommend skipping Phoenix , Arizona in the summer months. But late winter and early spring in the Arizona desert ? Now we’re talking. Besides the sunny but not too hot weather, Phoenix offers plenty of options to unwind , whether your idea of spring break means getting your vitamin D while playing outdoors or soaking it up along with a few cocktails at your nearest bar patio.

While in town, admire the array of succulents, cacti and other native plants at the Desert Botanical Garden . In downtown Phoenix, stroll the Roosevelt Row Arts District, with stops at galleries and record stores. After you’ve caught one of Phoenix’s technicolored desert sunsets, hole up at late-night haunts with great rooftop patios like the Grapevine for karaoke, or Valley Bar and Crescent Ballroom for cocktails, live music, DJ sets or arty community parties.

Field of blue bonnets alongside Cerro Castella in Big Bend National Park, West Texas, USA

3. Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA

Deep in the heart of Texas , the skies don’t get wider and the nights starrier than in Big Bend National Park , the…star attraction of the wide-open western part of the state. And in early spring, a blue layer sets in, as thousands of wildflowers (depending on the year’s rainfall) make the desert bloom.

Lovers of the outdoors will find endless opportunities among the park’s 1250 sq miles (3237 sq km) of scrubland and low mountains – think hiking and camping, or even just (very) scenic drives. To best experience the park’s grandeur, arrange a day (or more) of paddling on the Rio Grande, through Santa Elena Canyon, where rugged limestone cliffs plunge to the narrow water below – a thrilling cathedral of nature.

People watch skateboarding at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California, USA

4. Los Angeles, California, USA

While you can find sun, sand and surf at countless spring break destinations, you’ll enjoy people-watching like nowhere else at the urban beaches of Los Angeles . Sun-kissed California girls and boys frolic in the waves of wholesome  Santa Monica , while colorful characters keep it real on the boardwalk of  Venice Beach . Insiders – and especially surfers – know to head further south to Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches for a more low-key scene. And the sprawling dunes of  Malibu provide a taste a nature just a few miles from the clamor of the city.

A woman hikes through snow at Hawaii Volcano National Park, Hawai‘i (the Big Island), Hawaii, USA

5. Hawai‘i (the Big Island), Hawaii, USA

Hawaii ’s largest island offers huge pleasures all year long. Yet March marks the end of the high season in this tropical state, and budget travelers can usually find (relative) discounts for getaways to the Big Island . Trek up toward snow-capped peaks , wander through a verdant Kona coffee farm and watch the island get just a little bit bigger at one of the longest-running volcanic eruptions anywhere in the world. Expect much more than a mere beach getaway.

A palm tree along a beach on Vieques, Puerto Rico

6. Culebra and Vieques, Puerto Rico

Off the east coast of pearl-like Puerto Rico , look forward to white sands, sparkling blue sea, slow living – and not an all-inclusive resort in sight. Tiny Culebra is home to the extraordinary expanse of Playa Flamenco , one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean ; at Playa Carlos Rosario , snorkeling with sea turtles is an experience you’ll never forget. Larger and skinnier yet just as languid, nearby Vieques has myriad beaches to traverse. Its crown jewel is Bahía Mosquito , an astonishing bioluminescent bay. Venture out on an after-dark kayak trip to witness one of nature’s best magic shows, as microscopic organisms glow in the dark below the surface, making the water glitter.

The Peak 2 Peak gondola passes over skiers on the slopes in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

7. Whistler, Canada

If skis appeal more than surfboards for a spring escape, head to the world-famous resort town of Whistler , British Columbia . Come March, the peak season wanes, and the mountains begin to offer up discounts to keep the momentum going. At this point in the season, the days are longer and the skies clearer – but months of winter weather have ensured a solid snowpack for run after run. For 360-degree views of the glorious scenery, take a ride in the Peak 2 Peak Gondola , a 2.75-mile (4.4km) feat of engineering that connects the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. At lower elevations, hikes through conifer forests might have you spotting the area’s black bears as they emerge from hibernation.

People sat on a boat watch a whale breaching at a safe distance

8. Southern Baja California, Mexico

Catch a plane to Los Cabos – then immediately head north, away from the cluster of tourist resorts. A short distance up the sparsely populated Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur , nature beckons. The weather is ideal in the spring, and the beautiful coastline offers the chance to see sea lions, kayak through turquoise waters, go whale watching (the season ends in March) and even help with turtle conservation, all of which will allow you to return home with ecological bragging rights rather than drinking stories.

Sunset on the beach at El Tunco, El Salvador

9. El Tunco, El Salvador

One of Central America ’s least visited but most intriguing countries, El Salvador has lately been attracting new attention from visitors from all over. This small but mighty place tempts with mountain hikes, sunny beach days and surfing galore – and with frequent nonstop flights between many cities in the USA and San Salvador , it’s easy to pack it all into an itinerary lasting just a few days.

The waves hit El Salvador’s rocky coast especially intensely at El Tunco, a small village that’s become a major stop on the world’s surfing circuit. At any given moment, dozens of surfers are catching gnarly breaks just beyond the shoreline. On land, sun-kissed visitors toast to an active day on the waves at the town’s lively collection of beachfront restaurants and bars.

10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Grab your passport, your sunscreen and the skimpiest bathing suit you own and head to one of South America ’s premier destinations. In addition to its famous beaches, Rio de Janeiro has something to offer every type of spring breaker: stunning panoramas, fantastic food and a variety of outdoor adventures that will make for a getaway to remember.

Set up camp on Ipanema Beach to see and be seen, or join the ranks of other tourists on Copacabana ’s hotel-lined oceanfront. Take the cable car up to Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) or bask in the colossal shadow of Cristo Redentor atop Corcovado by day. Then hit the bar scene in Botafogo or party to the sounds of samba in the clubs of Lapa by night. You might not want to come back home.

Tourists look at a pair of sea lions on the beach, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

11. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

How about an island getaway for spring break with crowds of tortoises instead of college kids? Remote yet worth every effort to get to, the Galápagos Islands , home to some of the earth’s rarest and most unique flora and fauna, are the answer for nature-loving, adventure-seeking travelers.

With a minimal human footprint, Galápagos (part of Ecuador ) has unmatched biodiversity – endemic species such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies roam the islands at ranges close enough to interact with. Go surfing, kayaking, biking or scuba diving near the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on Isla San Cristóbal , or snorkel alongside stingrays, turtles and the occasional shark at Devil’s Crown, one of the archipelago’s most outstanding marine sites. Most arrive at this most remote part of the world through a package tour – though adventurous travelers can put together their own itineraries , too.
