Generally, if you want to visit ( and not live in ) the United States you must first obtain a visitor visa . Travelers from certain countries may be exempt from this requirement. For more information, please see the U.S. Department of State website .

If you want to travel to the United States for reasons other than business or pleasure, you must apply for a visa in the appropriate category. Extending Your Visit

If Customs and Border Protection (CBP)  authorizes your admission to the United States at the designated port of entry, you will receive a stamped Form I-94, Record of Arrival-Departure . If you wish to stay beyond the time indicated on the Form I-94, you may apply for an extension by filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status , with USCIS.

If You Lose Form I-94

You may apply for a replacement Form I-94 by filing a Form I-102, Application for Replacement/Initial Nonimmigrant Arrival/Departure Record .

USA Tourist Visa – Visitor Documents

The following documents are needed for a tourist visa for the USA.

There is no guarantee that the tourist visa will be issued even if you bring all the documents and evidence. Present only valid documents. Fraud or misrepresentation can result in a permanent ineligibility for a US visa.

You will need the following documents to obtain a USA tourist visa:

• Current  passport as well as old passports
• One photograph
• Confirmation page of online submitted  Form DS-160 with CEAC barcode.

Non-Immigrant Intent

Applicants for visitor visas must show that they qualify under the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The presumption in the Act is that every applicant is an intending immigrant. Therefore, applicants must overcome this presumption by demonstrating that:

• the purpose of their trip is to enter the United States temporarily for business or pleasure or medical treatment; 
• they plan to remain for a specific, limited period; 
• they have a residence outside of the United States and they intend to return abroad at the conclusion of the visit.

The prime criterion of the issuance of a visitor visa is if the applicant is able to convince the consular officer that the applicant truly intends to return to his/her home country after a temporary stay in the United States. It is impossible to specify the exact form of such documentation as each applicant’s circumstances vary greatly. Each applicant must keep in mind that the interview will focus on his or her credibility and not only the documents presented. 

It is generally difficult for young people to present strong ties. In such cases, the consular office may consider the applicant’s education status/grades, long-range plans, parents’ status, prospects in the home country, previous travel to other countries, etc.

Supporting US tourist visa documents

Most of your documents are for showing that you will return to the home country after your temporary stay in the United States. e.g., proof of work, proof of property, bank deposits, family ties, etc.

Please note that it is not mandatory that you gather each and every document listed here. There is no specific list prescribed by the government. However, the more documents you take, the better it is for you.

• Photocopies of the first page, last page and remarks pages of your current  passport . 
• Applicants who do not have sufficient funds of their own to support themselves during their proposed stay in the United States must present credible evidence to show that they will be supported thereby some interested person; such evidence should reflect the ties between applicant and sponsor which form the basis for the latter’s assurances of extending support. You should present all original documents  sent to you by your sponsor in the USA.  If someone is sponsoring you, you don’t have to show enough financial means by yourself to take care of your expenses for your trip to the US However, you should still take the property, employment/profession, and financial documents, as described below, to help you prove the strong ties to the home country.  As much as possible, avoid getting the affidavit of support from people who own small businesses such as gas stations, grocery stores or motels. Consular officers believe that these people employ people illegally and may employ you also. You are supposed to be going as a tourist, and not for work.  If you have photographs with you and the sponsor is in them, please carry them. 
• Self-Sponsored Applicants Self-sponsored applicants may show evidence of financial resources through property, employment/profession, and financial documents, as described below.  For parents visiting a child resident in the US, you need to provide the documents listed in the ‘Identification, Relationship and Legal Status Documents’ section in  sponsor documents . 
• You have a residence outside of the US that you do not intend on abandoning. This can be shown via deeds to real estate. These help to persuade the consular officer that you have strong ties to your home country and are likely to return there.
• Proof of property such as a house, shop, godown (warehouse), etc. Take the original ownership papers. If you have a loan on any of these properties, the original papers may not be with you. In that case, take whatever documents you have.  Also take the property estimate given by the Chartered Accountant that may include items such as land, flat, jewelry, etc. in addition to the real estate property.
• Photographs of your house, office, factory, shop or other properties. 
• Personal affidavit(s) regarding the property. Business owners should show how much they earned last year. Indicate ties such as having elderly parents you need to take care of or a child whom you need to help after your return with wedding arrangements. Also, describing the nature of the trip and details of the itinerary  is helpful. Sample affidavit for father Sample affidavit for mother   It is better to make a separate affidavit for each person, rather than a combined one for both of them. These affidavits cannot be on stamp paper, but instead on the CA’s letterhead.
• If you are employed, get a letter from an employer that shows the details of your position, salary, length of employment, the period of authorized vacation; and the purpose of your US trip. Also, carry pay slips from the three most recent months.
• If you are retired and get a pension, your pension book. 
• If you own a business, bring the company registration certificate and its income details.
• If you are running a business in partnership, bring your partnership agreement. 
• If you are employed or have a business, bring your visiting card (business card). 
• If you hold any social or professional designations in the home country, bring proof related to that. 
• A No Objection Certificate (NOC) letter and Leave Sanction letter if the applicant is in Government service or with any of the Armed Forces.  If you are employed in a private place, your leave sanction letter.  Sample No Objection and Leave Sanction Letter  
• If you hold any post or designation in professional, religious, or fraternal organizations, proof of the same. e.g., lions club president or secretary, trustee of the temple etc. 
• Latest income tax returns for last 3 years (i.e., Form 16 or Form 2D). You should take the originals.  Some people pay income tax only in the year in which they are applying for the visitor visa, even if they never paid income tax in their entire life. They think that if they show that they are paying income tax, they will get the visa. It is not that simple. 
• Some bank balance for at least a few months before going for a visa. Please note that simple bank letters showing simply the bank balance is not acceptable. You have to also take the past few months (say 6 months) of statements with you, or the pass book. 
• Other financial papers e.g., bank fixed deposits, shares (demat account statements), life insurance policies, bonds, etc. 
• Family photographs of close family.
• Documents about the family (e.g.,  marriage certificate ,  birth certificates  of any children, etc.) 
• Your family tree chart that shows your close relatives’ names, ages, professions and the addresses. 
• If you are applying alone and if your spouse has been to the US before, bring the original passport of your spouse, but only if your spouse is currently not visiting the US
• If you have traveled outside of the home country in the past, your photographs taken during your visit(s) are recommended. 
• If you have traveled to the US earlier on any visa and came back to your home country on time, show the proof as per stamps in your passport or copies of plane tickets or boarding passes. 
• If you have been to the US earlier and applied for an  extension of stay , you must present a Form I-797 Extension of Status Approval Notice during your subsequent visa interview. 
• If any of your close relatives have been to the US and have returned on time, proof of the same.
• Cover letter highlighting the nature of the visit, reason for travel, an outline of your plans in the US and explaining why you will return to the home country (family ties, employment, or similar binding obligations). Preferably, it should be written in bullet points and be less than 1 page. Sample   Major tourist places in the US
• Optionally, include letters of invitation from relatives or friends in the United States whom the applicant plans to visit, a confirmation of participation in group tours, an invitation to an event such as a printed wedding invitation, or an invitation to attend a graduation, etc. 
• For children below 14 years of age, the  original birth certificate , and, if applicable, parents’ valid visas.  Birth certificates or marriage certificates of adult applicants are not required. 
• List of names, addresses, and phone numbers of all the persons whom you are going to visit or stay with. 
• Air Tickets If they ask for a return air ticket, tell them it will be purchased after the visa is issued. Don’t show a one way air ticket in any case.
• Visitor Medical Insurance If they ask for  visitors medical insurance , you can purchase it from  Insubuy . It is not mandatory to get visitors insurance before getting the visitors visa. 
• Dependents joining their spouse abroad need to carry their original  marriage certificate  and entire wedding photo album along with the spouse’s visa copy. 
• Criminal/court records pertaining to any arrest or conviction anywhere, even if you completed your sentence or were later pardoned.
• Purpose Specific Documents   Gather these additional documents, if applicable, for the specific purpose of your visit. 
• Additional documents for young persons
• If there are variations in the names in different documents, prepare a One and the Same Person affidavit.  Sample one and the same person affidavit  
• It is not possible to list all documents that anyone may need in any situation. Therefore, even if some document is not listed here, and you think that it would be helpful to show your genuine purpose to visit the US or it can show your close ties to the home country that will force you to return, please carry those documents.

South Korea Tourist Visa: Requirements and Application Process

A South Korea tourist visa is required for all nationalities that are not visa-exempt. The official code for the ordinary tourist visa is C-3-9. You can start the visa application online but you must visit a South Korean embassy in person to submit the documents.

Tourist visa validity

The single-entry tourist visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

The double-entry tourist visa is valid for 6 months.

The multiple-entry tourist visa can be valid for up to 5 years but has additional requirements including prior travel history to South Korea and as such isn’t an option for first-time travelers.

Duration of stay

Single-entry visas allow up to 90 days but double-entry visas only up to 30 days at a time.

Allowed number of entries

There are three types of South Korean tourist visas – single-entry, double-entry and multiple-entry.

You can enter South Korea from any international airport or seaport with a tourist visa.

When to apply

The processing time varies greatly between South Korean embassies. In general, allow at least a few weeks for the issuance of a tourist visa after your first visit to the embassy. 

• Earliest: 3 months before traveling
• Latest: 3 weeks before traveling

Tourist visa extension

Extensions to the tourist visa are possible but not easily granted. You must apply in person at the Seoul Immigration office. Extensions are approved only on a case-by-case basis.

South Korea Tourist Visa Requirements

Who requires a tourist visa

All non-visa-exempt nationalities require a tourist visa for South Korea.

If you are visa-exempt, you do not require a tourist visa instead you require a K-ETA to travel to South Korea.

Documents required

The following documents are required for the tourist visa.

• Passport valid for more than 6 months
• Completed Visa Application Form (Form #17)
• Two passport-size photos (1 digital photo for online form)
• Bank statement for the last 3-6 months

Depending on the nationality and the embassy where you apply, you may be required to submit additional documents such as the below.

• Proof of employment (employment letter, salary slips, etc.)
• Income tax returns (1-3 year ITR depending on whether employed or self-employed)
• Proof of long-term residence (if applying from a country other than the country of citizenship)
• Proof of property ownership
• Family book or marriage certificate

Photo requirements

The photo for the tourist visa must meet the following requirements. 

• Must be of size 35×45 mm, with the face taking 25×35 mm
• Must be against a plain, evenly lit and light background, without any marks or creases
• Must have taken within the last 6 months
• Mist be looking directly at the camera
• No sunglasses or hats, except for medical/disability reasons
• Facial features are not covered from the bottom of chin to the top of forehead
• Full face is visible without any shadows
• Full face, eyebrows, eyes, nose, or mouth must not be covered, but covered ears are permitted.

The visa fee varies significantly depending on the type of visa, the location where you apply and your nationality.

In most general cases, the single-entry visa fee is 40 USD, double-entry is 70 USD and multiple-entry is 90 USD. The fee is payable in local currency in cash.

In some countries, South Korea has outsourced visa processing to Visa Application Centers such as VFS Global. Visa Application Centers charge their own service fee for handling the visa applications.

The fee is higher, lower, or exempted for certain nationalities. You can find the complete list on the Korea Visa Portal . 

Processing time

Applications are reviewed by a particular embassy so processing time is not universal. Some embassies process tourist visas in 4 days, others in 7 days, some in 14 days or more.

The official guidance is to apply at least 3 weeks in advance of traveling to allow sufficient time for the issuance of your tourist visa.

In countries where the application process is outsourced to Visa Application Centers, express processing is available for an additional fee.

How to apply for South Korea tourist visa

South Korea’s tourist visa application process is partially online. You will have to fill out an online form but you will have to visit the embassy in person after to submit your documents. 

Below is the general process of applying for a South Korean tourist visa at the embassy. 

• Step 1: Complete the e-form online

Step 2: Visit the diplomatic office

Step 3: wait for visa processing, step 4: receive visa issuance email/collect passport, step 1: complete the e-form online.

Follow the below steps to fill out the e-form online.

• Go to the Korea Visa Navigator page and select your country. Pick “Short Term visit” and “90 days or less”.
• Scroll to the bottom and select “Ordinary Tourist C-3-9”.
• You will see multiple streams. The first stream on the list is for travelers visiting South Korea for tourism. Click on “e-Form (Visa Application)”.
• Read through the procedure guidance page and click “Fill out the e-Form”.
• Select the South Korean diplomatic office that you intend to visit, upload a face photo and complete the form.

After you complete the form, print the file with the barcode on it. You will receive an email with your application number. If you displace the barcode file, you can find it by entering your details on the Check Application Status page .

Prepare the printed visa application form (the one with the barcode) and attach copies of the other required documents. 

Visit the South Korean embassy or consulate that you picked during the application.

Formally submit your application in person at the embassy. Pay the visa fee in cash.

Check your email regularly in case the embassy requests additional documents. The visa process can take anywhere from 4 to 14 working days depending on the embassy. 

Receive Confirmation of Visa Issuance or Visa Grant Notice. Retrieve it online and print it before traveling to South Korea. 

If the embassy or consulate of South Korea still issues visa stickers in your country, you will have to collect your passport or request to mail it to you.

NOTE South Korean embassies no longer issue visa stickers inside passports. Stickers are still being issued in countries where visa application centers handle the process but this is going to be phased out soon.

Entry Procedure at the Border

Before going to the immigration counters, make sure to complete the paper Arrival Card. The airline staff will give you one onboard or you can grab one from the immigration. 

Present your passport along with the Visa Grant Notice and the Arrival Card to the immigration officer. Get stamped in and enter South Korea.

Documents Required for a Schengen Visa Application

When applying for a visa to Europe, you will have to submit some required documents as part of the Schengen visa application process .

The Schengen States have created a list of the required documents for each purpose of entry into this territory, and these requirements are approximately the same for a stay in each of them.

In this article, you can find a checklist of the generally required documents to obtain a Schengen Visa, as well as the specific required documents for each visa type. In addition, you will also find a short brief for each requirement and its specifications.

What Documents Are Needed to Apply for a Schengen Visa?

The following list of documents are required for any short-term Schengen visa application:

• Visa application form . Fully completed and signed.
• Two recently taken photos must be attached.  Both photos must be taken within the last three months, according to the visa photo requirements. You can easily get a Schengen visa-compliant photo online at  MyBiometricPhotos.com
• A valid passport. Not older than 10 years, and it should be valid for at least three more months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen area. Older passports with visas on them (if you have any).
• Round trip reservation or itinerary . It must include dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from the Schengen area. You can use the visa consultation services like this one . • Travel insurance policy . • Proof of paid visa fee .  €90 for adults and €45 for children from 6 to 12 years old.
• Employment contract.
• Current bank statement of the latest 6 months.
• Leave permission from the employer.
• Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary.
• A copy of your business license.
• Company bank statement of the latest 6 months.
• Income Tax Return (ITR).
• Proof of enrollment.
• No objection letter from the School or University.
• Pension statement of the latest 6 months.
• A confirmation of Employment letter, no older than three months, from their spouse’s employer stating the position held within the company and the starting date.
• Spouse’s valid passport.
• An official marriage certificate.

What Documents Are Required for Schengen Visa for Minors?

The parents / legal guardians of minors applying for a Schengen visa must submit some extra documents for the underage applicant:

• The minor’s birth certificate.
• Application form signed by both parents.
• Family court order – in cases where only one parent has full custody of the child.
• Certified copies of ID/passport of both parents.
• A notarized parental authorization – signed by both parents/guardians if the minor will be travelling alone.

The embassies and consulates will check if your documents are genuine and issued by official institutions. If for some reason, the embassy or consulate suspects you provided fraudulent documents, your visa application will be rejected.

Can The EU Embassy/Consulate Ask Me for Additional Documents?

Yes, embassies and visa centres can ask you to submit additional documents not included in the checklist. This is because the document checklist is a general guideline and cannot account for individual circumstances. Apart from all the aforementioned documents, depending on the Schengen visa type you are applying for, several additional documents should be submitted as well.

Can Someone Else Submit My Documents on My Behalf?

It’s mandatory you submit your documents on the day of your Schengen visa appointment by yourself since you have to submit your biometric data. But, in case of an emergency, you cannot physically visit the embassy or visa centre; you may authorise someone else to apply on your behalf— provided you’ve already given your fingerprints for a previous Schengen visa application. In that case, you need to prepare a written authorisation signed by you or give power of attorney so that person is officially allowed to submit the documents for you. Please note that you may be required to notarise your visa application.

Do I Need to Submit Original Documents?

Most Schengen embassies require original copies of documents. For your passport, you must submit the original travel document along with a photocopy, while some embassies may also ask for certified copies of other documents (marriage certificate, family certificate, etc.).

Do I Need to Submit My Biometrics?

Yes, you must submit your fingerprints at the embassy/consulate/visa centre on the day of your visa interview. Ten digital fingerprints will be required (if applicable) and stored in VIS (Schengen Visa Information System). However, you must submit your biometrics only if this is your first visa application or if five years have passed since you last submitted your fingerprints.

Note: Children under 12 do not need to submit their biometric information.

Can I Staple My Documents?

If the embassy or consulate where you apply for your Schengen visa does not specifically mention stapling your documents, please do not do so. You can use paper clips to separate or attach any additional documents, but do not staple or glue them unless specifically requested.

How Do I Organize My Schengen Visa Documents?

There is no set way how to organise your documents for your Schengen visa — all embassies have different requests. Some may ask you to arrange your documents starting from your application form and followed by your passport, while the rest are in no particular order. But, some other embassies may ask you to put your passport and identity photos first, followed by the application form. If there are no particular instructions from your application centre or embassy, make sure you have all the required documents and arrange them in a logical manner.

Do I Need to Translate My Documents?

If you have a document issued in your native language, for example, your work contract or your medical certificate it must be in English or in one of the corresponding languages of the Schengen country. Any translated documents must be legalised or certified with an Apostille stamp to be valid for submission.

Will My Schengen Visa Be Denied if I Forget One Document?

If you forget important documents such as a travel insurance certificate, or photo identity, your visa may be rejected immediately. However, some embassies and visa centres may ask you to submit your application again with the complete documentation without denying your visa— this depends on the embassy and the document you forgot.

Will the Embassy Return My Documents if My Schengen Visa Application Is Rejected?

Some embassies will return your passport along with the other documents you submitted in case your Schengen visa application is denied. Other embassies may only return your passport but not the rest of the documents. Either way, if you want to re-apply for a Schengen visa, you need to assemble the required documents from the beginning, as those documents you already submitted will no longer be valid (e.g., your bank statements, travel insurance certificate, etc.).

Do I Need to Submit My Biometrics Again if My Schengen Visa Is Denied?

Generally, you must submit your fingerprints again if your initial visa application is denied and you’re applying for a new visa. This means you must visit the visa centre or embassy to submit your biometric data.

Can I Apply for a Schengen Visa Without a Passport?

You must submit a valid Schengen application with your passport. If, for any reason, you do not have a passport at the time of application, e.g., your passport expires, is lost, or is damaged, then you need to make sure you apply for a new passport in time so you can apply for your Schengen visa.

What Other Documents Do I Need at the Schengen External Borders Apart From My Travel Document With the Schengen Visa?

If you receive a Schengen visa, it does not automatically grant you entry into the Schengen zone. At the border, official authorities may ask you to provide additional documentation besides your visa and passport. For example, they may ask you to provide evidence that you have enough money to stay in the Schengen country. This is why most embassies recommend that you carry a copy of the initial documents you submitted for your visa.

Types of US Visitor Visa

To travel to America, you first need to apply for a US visitor visa , which is a temporary visa issued to a person who intends to travel to the country for the purposes of business, tourism, or both, or for medical treatment. 

Those traveling to the US for the purposes of temporary employment, education, religious work, etc., need to apply under a different visa category. There are two types of US visitor visas, so make sure to choose the one that best suits the purpose of your visit.

Business Visa (B1): A business visa is issued for the following purposes:

• Consulting business associates
• Negotiating a business contract
• Attending a scientific, business, or educational convention
• To settle an estate.

Tourism Visa (B2): A tourism visa is issued for the following purposes:

• Visiting family and friends residing in the US
• Medical treatment or procedures
• Tourism and leisure
• Participating in a music , sports, or social events, only if these activities do not result in any monetary remuneration
• Enrolling in certain recreational courses that do not count for credit towards a degree.

Documents Required for US Visitor Visa

The process of getting a visitor visa starts by filling up the non-immigration visa application form , DS-160 . You need to submit certain necessary documents along with the accurately filled application form. These documents include:

• Your original passport, which must be valid for at least six months after the completion of your intended visit to the US, along with all your old passports, if any.
• A digital as well as hard copy of your passport-sized photograph, according to the specifications set by the US government.
• The confirmation page that you have submitted the visa application form. 
• Proof of payment of the visa fee, as well as the original copy of your interview appointment letter.
• Documents verifying that you do not have any criminal history, in your home country or in any other country.
• Documents proving that you are financially capable of taking care of all expenses during your travels in America. Proof of financial ability can include recent bank statements, pay slips for the last three months, copies of your recent tax returns.
• In case you are visiting America to meet with relatives or friends or to attend an event, you will need to submit a letter of invitation or proof of the event.
• For those seeking medical treatment in the United States, documents from a doctor in their home country as well as a doctor and hospital in the United States accepting the person for treatment, must be attached.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas. 

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Following is the list of documents required for US Tourist visa for Indians.

A passport is a document that is required at the time of international travels. It is issued by the government of the country to verify the identity and nationality of the candidate.

The submitted passport must meet the parameters given below

• It must be original and genuine.
• It must be provided with a copy of the first and the last page.
• It must be valid for 6 months ahead of the span of stay.
• It must have minimum of two blank pages for the visa stamp.
• It must not be torn, ripped, split, or damaged in any kind of way.

One cannot cross international boundries without the passport. It is considered a criminal offense otherwise.

An old passport is a passport that has expired or is completely stamped. In the visa processing, it is required to track the travel history of the applicant.

If available, the old passport must also be provided meeting the given criteria

• If the traveller has an old passport, it must be submitted along with the latest passport.
