'77 Wind & Wuthering Tour

Genesis' 1977 World Tour was in support of their epic album Wind & Wuthering released on December 23, 1976 in the UK and December 27, 1976 in the USA. The tour kicked off on January 1, 1977 at the Rainbow Theater in London and ended on July 3, 1977 at the Olympiahalle in Munich Germany. The tour had 97 shows and featured some firsts and lasts. This tour was the first tour to feature Chester Thompson behind the drum kit and if you were at that show on July 3rd in Munich Germany you saw the last show Steve Hackett ever played with Genesis. Wind & Wuthering is an album that features some of Genesis' most lush arrangements and cinematic songs. It is an album of incredible depth and power. The Genesis Show faithfully recreates the sounds of this incredible music and from this album and tour with stunning visuals as well as a few songs that even Genesis has never played live. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done once. Come experience this music live like you have never seen before with the The Genesis Show '77.

'81 Abacab Tour

Genesis' 1981 World Tour was in support of their album Abacab released on September 18, 1981, worldwide. The tour kicked off just a few days later on September 25, 1981, at LaMonumental, a bullfighting ring, in Barcelona Spain and ended on December 23, 1981, at The NEC Arena in Birmingham, England. The tour had 65 shows and 3 legs to the tour. The 1st leg was in Europe. The North American 2nd leg of the tour began on November 12, 1981, at The Dane County Coliseum in Madison Wisconsin and ended December 11, 1982, at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse NY. The 3rd leg of the Abacab Tour brought Genesis back to Europe for 7 dates in their home country of England starting on December 17th for a 3-night stint at Wembley Stadium. It was their first of many times playing Wembley Stadium. The finished up the tour with a 4-night stint at The NEC Arena. This was the first time Genesis opted to play the big arenas instead of all of the smaller venues they played in the UK on the '80 Duke tour. The Abacab Tour featured the return of Daryl Stuermer on guitar and Chester Thomson on the drums. By this time they had cemented themselves as permanent touring members. This tour was immortalized by the epic Three Sides Live album and Video which shows the band arguably at their peak as a live act. The setlist featured much of their new Abacab album but also showcased some of their classic fan favorites. The last night of the tour featured a first and a last. It would be the first time that Genesis played The Knife on the Abacab Tour but would also be the last time they ever played it live. The Knife closed the Abacab Tour. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done once or a few times. '82 Three Sides Live Encore Tour

Genesis' 1982 Encore Tour was in support of their iconic live album album Three Sides Live released on June 4, 1982, worldwide. The tour didn't kick off until August 1st, 1982 in Peoria Illinois an ran until September 30, 1982, finishing at the famous Hammersmith Oden in London England. The tour had 45 shows and 2 legs to the tour. The 1st leg was in the US and included the famous August 21st 1982 show at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia PA where they played in front of 58,000 screaming Genesis fans, their largest US crowd ever. The 2nd leg of the tour in Europe which began on September 3rd, 1982, at Charmilles Stadium in Geneva Switzerland. The Encore Tour again featured the return of Daryl Stuermer on guitar and Chester Thomson on the drums. The setlist was similar to the '81 Abacab Tour setlist but brought back some older fan favorites like Watcher Of The Skies and the epic Supper's Ready, played in it's entirety for the last time on this tour. Subsequent tours only featured fragments of the song. It should be noted that be noted that Peter Gabriel reunited with Genesis for one show in Milton Keynes billed as Six Of The Best on October 2nd 1982. Steve Hackett also made a guest appearance on 2 songs that evening. This show could technically be looked at as the last show of the Encore Tour but it featured a completely different setlist centered around the Gabriel era material. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour, not counting the Six Of The Best show. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done a few times. Come experience this music live as you have never seen before with The Genesis Show.

Flashback: Genesis Play ‘Duchess’ on 1981 ‘Abacab’ Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Genesis kicked off their reunion tour Monday night with an incredible show at Birmingham, England’s Utilita Arena. The set contained many of their biggest hits, including “Invisible Touch,” “Turn It On Again,” “I Can’t Dance,” and “Throwing It All Away” but also made room for deeper cuts like an extended instrumental passage from 1973 tune “The Cinema Show,” the 1991 fan favorite “Fading Lights,” and a medley of the Selling England by the Pound classics “Firth of Fifth” and “I Know What I Like (in Your Wardrobe).”

Perhaps the most surprising moment came midway through the night when they broke out “Duchess” from 1980’s Duke . The song, which was their first track to utilize a drum machine, tells the story of a singer named Duchess who once played to enormous audiences, but falls on hard times in her later years.

“Time went by,” Collins sings. “It wasn’t so easy now, all uphill, and not feeling so strong/Yes, times were hard/ Too much thinking ’bout the future and what people might want.”

Collins is in a very different situation than Duchess since he remains a huge draw on the road with both his solo shows and with Genesis, but he’s faced some significant health problems and personal issues during the past few years, making it hard not to draw some comparisons between their situations. These parallels made the ending of the song (“She dreamed of the times when she sang her songs/And everybody cried for more”) particularly intense on opening night.

Genesis last played “Duchess” on the 1981 Abacab tour. Their shows at the Savoy Theatre in New York City and Long Island, New York, in November 1981 were filmed for the Three Sides Live movie. Check out footage of “Duchess” from the film right here.

The lineup of Genesis on the road right now has Collins’ son Nicholas behind the drum kit instead of longtime touring drummer Chester Thompson , but is otherwise identical to the one seen in Three Sides Live . The band is coming to America in November and December for a run of 21 East Coast arena shows. The tour wraps December 15th at TD Garden in Boston, and Collins has suggested that Genesis may end forever at that point.

That would be a huge disappointment for fans on mainland Europe, Australia, South America, Asia, and the West Coast of America who will miss out on the last chance to see them. To quote “Duchess,” they are “crying for more.” Let’s hope Collins changes his mind and decides to keep the show on the road throughout 2022.

But first of all let’s talk about the motives for the Three Sides Live-tour (this is the unofficial title of the tour), which found their roots in the release of the double-LP with the same title in June 1982. The fourth side was supplied with songs originating from the recording-sessions for Abacab respectively for Duke - except in England. The British fans got something special with pressing live-material of older tours on the B-side of the second record. Unusual and unique in the history of the band is the fact that they decided to let a (promotion-) tour follow directly after the release of this live-album. At any rate it’s hardly to ignore that the English version of Three Sides Live has obviously given the incentive to dig up even old classics again and to play them live. Additionally there was an official announcement, Genesis would like to pay tribute to the 10th anniversary of Supper’s Ready and therefore they have included this song in the set. At this place we’d like to give way to the presumption, Genesis wanted to compensate the (after the Abacab-tour very disappointed) fans with the selected songs of the 70s.

1

Concernig the stageshow there haven't been any technical inovations for once, which should come to light at the concerts. The already at the Abacab-tour tested Varilites have of course been used again and some unforgettable moments got created in this way together with the dry ice. Very fascinating effects got created by the application of black light besides. The audience got more than just a couple of colour-spotlights hung up at the top of the stage. The scenery, which acted upon the spectators, was an optical perfectly mounted event, which didn't just accompany the music, but strenghtened its effect.

2

But this shouldn’t be the end of the particularities during that year. On 10th November 1972 Genesis had played in the legendary Marquee Club in London. On 27th September 1982, nearly 10 years later, this holy halls should be again the scene for an unusual concert. Unusual for that reason, as the group performed under the name of The Garden Wall (one of the two schoolbands, genesis originated from). When the fans got wind of this show, the tickets got certainly in great demand. A lot slept in front of the entrance of the theatre, and the next morning there has been a long queue of waiting fans. Already at 10.30 a.m. the concert was sold-out. Only fivehundred people have had the chance then to get into the club, and there’ve been of course hundreds on this day, who came away empty-handed. But there shouldn’t be any reason for them being disappointed. As the absolute climax of the year 1982 heralded. Genesis played again a concert together with Peter Gabriel!

4

50,000 fans from all over the world did come to the Concert Bowl of Milton Keynes to see the "reunion" of Genesis and Peter Gabriel. before this festival started John Martyn, The Blues Band and Talk Talk performed. At 7 p.m. sharp Tony, Mike, Phil, Chester and Daryl got on stage. Then a coffin, carried by four undertakers, could be seen in the spotlights. The coffin opened, and Peter climbed out off it in the "Rael"-outfit, to start the concert immediately with Back In N.Y.C..

Genesis Reunion Dream Set Lists: Roundtable

When Genesis  announced a reunion tour , most fans rejoiced — after all,  Phil Collins ,  Mike Rutherford  and Tony Banks hadn't played together since wrapping their 2007 Turn It On Again trek. But in a development highlighting the divided nature of this band's fanbase, other fans complained.

Collins, who has battled numerous health issues in recent years, will likely perform while seated — similar to the set-up on his recent solo tours . Meanwhile, former members  Peter Gabriel  and  Steve Hackett  aren't part of the jaunt — meaning the set list will probably lean at least somewhat away from prog and toward pop. The Facebook groups and Twitter threads have been full of lively (and often heated) debate.

Now five UCR writers are throwing their voices in the mix. Below, we tackle four tour-related subjects: our dream set lists, what solo songs might work during the shows, what tracks could feature a Gabriel/Hackett cameo and what album would be best front to back onstage.

What's your dream 20-song Genesis set list?

Ryan Reed :

Keep in mind, this isn't my list of 20 favorite Genesis songs. It's also not my dream set list for a lineup featuring Gabriel and Hackett. I tried to keep in mind what songs would work best for the current group, though I still threw in some proggy favorites and left-field choices that they'll obviously never play again.

"Mama" "Behind the Lines" "Abacab" "Back in N.Y.C." "Domino" "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" "Dance on a Volcano" "Man of Our Times" "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" "Duchess" "The Musical Box" "Firth of Fifth" "Evidence of Autumn" "The Carpet Crawlers" "Supper's Ready" "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers…"/"…In That Quiet Earth" "It" "Paperlate" "No Reply At All" "Follow You Follow Me"

Matt Wardlaw :

Genesis has such a fantastic catalog, and I think there's always a feeling that they could go deeper with the setlist than they do. Like so many groups and artists, they're in a difficult position with a lot of hits they have to play, while also looking to satisfy the longtime fans who want more than that. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Nic Collins indicated that there are some interesting possibilities on the table. He mentions the difficulty of learning the last 10 minutes of "Supper's Ready," as one example. So how deep will they go? History suggests they'll probably play it safe. But they could take a page from the  Rush  playbook and have a few rotating set lists to spike in some rarely (or never) played material. The following set list mixes essential hits with some more ambitious picks.

"Mama" "Abacab" "Follow You, Follow Me" "Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea" "The Carpet Crawlers" "Watcher of the Skies" "Dancing With The Moonlight Knight" "Supper's Ready" "No Son of Mine" "Land of Confusion" "Keep It Dark" "On The Shoreline" "Tonight Tonight Tonight" "Ripples..." "Firth of Fifth" Drum Duet (Nic and Phil) "Los Endos" "Invisible Touch" "I Can't Dance" "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"

Nick DeRiso :

It’s a little more Collins heavy than I might have liked, but that's the era they’ll inevitably focus on.

"Turn It On Again" "The Carpet Crawlers" "Firth of Fifth" "Home by the Sea" "Deep in the Motherlode" "Eleventh Earl of Mar" "Ripples..." "Watcher of the Skies" "Driving the Last Spike" "Man on the Corner" "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" "No Son of Mine" "Supper's Ready" "Mama" "Your Own Special Way" "Keep It Dark" "The Knife" "Domino" "Afterglow" "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight"

Rob Smith :

"Squonk" "In the Cage" "The Carpet Crawl" "Afterglow" "Mama" "One for the Vine" "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" "Firth of Fifth" "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" "Supper's Ready" "...The Musical Box (Closing Section)" "The Cinema Show" "Dodo"/"Lurker" "Abacab" "Misunderstanding" "Your Own Special Way" "Hold On My Heart" "Home By the Sea" "Second Home By the Sea"

Encore: "Turn It On Again"

Three sets and an encore. First set is built around a lot of  Seconds Out , which I love dearly, with a couple other songs (like "Mama" and "In the Cage") slotted in. Prog City, and it'd be really cool. While the people interested in just the hits head out for beers, the rest of us storm the Gold section and take their seats.

The second set is built around "Supper's Ready," for the hell of it.

The third set has shorter songs and ends with the "Home By the Sea"/"Second Home By the Sea" tandem from the '83 record . "Turn It On Again" is the encore, because of course it is.

Allison Rapp :

(in no particular order) "The Musical Box" "Watcher of the Skies" "For Absent Friends" "That's All" "I Can't Dance" "Domino" "Dance on a Volcano" "Ripples..." "Back in N.Y.C" "Lilywhite Lilith" "White Mountain" "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" "Follow You Follow Me" "Supper's Ready" "Fireside Song" "The Knife" "Dancing with the Moonlit King" "No Son of Mine" "Since I Lost You" "Carpet Crawlers"

If Genesis agreed to play one song from the members' solo/side projects, which would work best?

Reed: "In the Air Tonight" would obviously go down well — it fits perfectly with the quiet-to-loud dynamics and creepy aesthetics of "Mama" and other early '80s favorites. But since I'm just that guy, I'd probably go with something more obscure that still fits their trio vibe — probably a Banks track like "Lion of Symmetry" or "This Is Love." (Obviously I know they, including Banks, would laugh at the idea of playing that stuff.)

Wardlaw: It seems highly unlikely, but if they were to go down that road, I'd love to hear "Silent Running" from Mike + The Mechanics , "Angel Face" from Tony Banks' solo work — both seem like songs that Collins could tackle vocally. From a "hit" perspective, one could make a strong case for the Mechanics' "The Living Years" getting the best audience reception. For Collins' own catalog, why not keep it loose and fun and go with "Sussudio"?

Smith: I don't follow Rutherford or Banks as solo artists, so I'd go with one of two Collins numbers: either "I Missed Again" from  Face Value  (which sounds like an  Abacab  outtake, and may very well have been) or "Inside Out" from  No Jacket Required  (which, if the drums are mixed properly, would be a real boomer live).

DeRiso: Anthony Phillips — “Which Ever Way the Wind Blows,” a song that began sessions for his long-awaited post-Genesis record, The Geese & the Ghost , and notably featured Rutherford. Steve Hackett — same deal: "Shadow of the Hierophant” also found Rutherford sitting in on a project which arrived while Hackett was still a frustrated member of a group quickly winnowing down to the current trio format. Peter Gabriel — "Solsbury Hill," despite the fact that it’s actually about leaving all of this behind.

Rapp: I'm partial to Gabriel's So album, and I'm also a firm believer in the idea that if you're a big enough band, you owe the audience at least a couple of hit songs per concert. I think the band as a whole could do something pretty cool with a rendition of Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." It could be arranged in a million different ways to highlight the other members.

If Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett agreed to a live guest spot on one song, what would you pick?

Reed: Anything from the Gabriel era would be incredible, but I'd pick "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight." It's already a perfect showcase for both the former members, and the singer already teased a portion of the song during his solo tour with Sting . Wouldn't that be fate?

Wardlaw: It would be a powerful moment to have the pair come out during the encore and guest on "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." That's probably the most obvious one — and I think you'd have to put it in the encore to not derail the rest of the show, because how do you follow that? "Watcher of the Skies" in that same position would also be awesome.

DeRiso: "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight,” by a mile. A typically sweeping early Genesis epic, this track provides a sharp commentary on contemporary England to the accompaniment of a prosaic piano signature from Gabriel and counterpoint 12-string guitar figures by Hackett. Then things go thrillingly haywire. It might be their most important close collaboration.

Smith: Man, pick any of the classic Gabriel-era stuff. "The Carpet Crawlers," "The Music Box," "Supper's Ready,""Firth of Fifth," "In the Cage." I realize I just listed five when asked for one. Let's go with "Supper's Ready," because it's 25 or so minutes, and I'd want that moment to last as long as possible.

Rapp: It seems to me that the most logical album to pluck from for a Gabriel/Hackett appearance would be Nursery Cryme , and maybe it would be inviting unnecessary chaos, but I'd definitely give them a shot at performing "The Musical Box." I love the dual 12-string interplay between Banks and Rutherford. (Although perhaps Gabriel could skip the fox costume this time.)

If this lineup decided to play one album from start to finish, what should it be?

Reed: It wouldn't really make much sense for the trio lineup to play any full albums from the Gabriel era — even if I (like a lot of fans) would enjoy seeing it. My favorite post-Gabriel album is probably  Duke , partly because it balances their proggy and poppy sides so well, so I'd pick that.

Wardlaw: For the Collins/Rutherford/Banks lineup, Invisible Touch is probably the most viable move as far as a potential ticket sales driver. But if we're still dreaming, A Trick of the Tail top to bottom would be fun — or Duke !

DeRiso: Unfortunately, they couldn’t pull off  A Trick of the Tail , the best album of the immediate post-Gabriel era, since Hackett is long gone. So we’re left with the best Genesis album after that – 1981’s  Abacab . And it’d still be pretty great. After all, no classic-era prog-rock band, not even Yes , found a more perfect balance between what they’d always been about and this new decade’s sounds and innovations.

Smith: After our first roundtable , I went back and listened to  Abacab  and  Duke , just because I hadn't heard either front to back in a while, and they're two of the best records the three-man lineup made. I'd probably go with  Abacab , because it's probably the punchier of the two, and the songs are great.

Rapp: What it should be and what I would like it to be are definitely two different things. This is a pipe dream — I'm not even sure it would be physically or logistically possible — but if I got to choose, I'd want to hear The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway . Realistically though, it should probably be something a little less lengthy and a little more digestible, like Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance .

Neil Young and Crazy Horse cancel tour, Hollywood Bowl show: ‘A couple of us got sick’

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are taking a break from the road, canceling the remaining shows of their Love Earth tour.

Young announced the cancellation Wednesday on his website , citing the health of the Crazy Horse band members, which currently include him, band co-founder Ralph Molina, bassist Billy Talbot and singer Micah Nelson (son of country music legend Willie Nelson). “When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to stop,” the band wrote in a statement. It did not name which members were dealing with health issues and did not provide more details about the nature of their illness.

“We are still not fully recovered, so sadly our great tour will have a big unplanned break,” the statement continued.

Neil Young performs in Los Angeles, Calif., in 2023.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse turn back time at the Roxy

Fifty years after opening the venerable L.A. club, Neil Young and Crazy Horse reassembled, in all their ragged glory, to perform two of their classic albums.

Sept. 22, 2023

Crazy Horse announced its Love Earth tour in February. The “Down by the River” group played the Pine Knob in Michigan and were set to play several shows in Canada in July and the Hollywood Bowl in late September. Now it seems those shows are no more — though the band said it is open to playing those missed dates “as time passes when we are ready to rock again.”

“Health is #1,” the statement declared. “We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you … and for for us.”

The now-canceled tour launched with a San Diego concert in late April, a month after Young reinstated his music on Spotify after a two-year boycott. He withdrew his catalog in 2022 after taking issue with Spotify’s platforming of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” accusing the popular podcast of spreading medical misinformation.

Neil Young returns his music to Spotify, ‘except for the full sound we created’

Neil Young will return his music to Spotify, as other platforms are now “serving the same disinformation podcast features.”

March 13, 2024

In March, Young wrote on his website , “My decision comes as services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at Spotify.”

He added: “I cannot just leave Apple and Amazon, like I did Spotify, because my music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all, so I have returned to Spotify.”

Less than two weeks later, Joni Mitchell — who had followed Young’s lead in 2022 — also q uietly returned to the music streaming platform.

Mick Jagger, of The Rolling Stones, performs during a concert...

For most of the next two hours, Jagger nearly single-handedly carried the concert. He defied the limitations often associated with his 80-year age and refused to mail in a single verse. Questions about the Stones’ predictability, purpose and joyfulness aside, the physically fit singer continues to take performance as seriously as anyone in the business. He nailed his deliveries, projected enthusiasm, embodied determination and gave a master class in the art of animated dance moves. AARP, the tour sponsor, couldn’t have dreamt up a better advertisement.

Playing the 40th Chicago concert of their career and the first local gig without their late drummer Charlie Watts (who died in 2021), the Stones frequently needed the boost. The impossible task of succeeding Watts fell to the talented Steve Jordan, whose collaborative relationship with guitarist Keith Richards stretches back to the Reagan era. In a possible nod to Watts’ famously keen fashion style, Jordan sported a smart suit and black sunglasses. He knew the parts inside-out, though his approach — slightly busier and heavier, with less swing, glide and refinement than the jazz-leaning Watts — altered the rhythmic structures in ways obvious to anyone with a history of seeing the band.

Still, as they say, the show must go on. Nearly 35 years after they mounted a comeback trek that prompted some critics to crack wise about their ages in the context of rock ‘n’ roll, the Rolling Stones keep on keepin’ on, in spite of internal issues, health setbacks and mortality. In the face of endless, cliched stories that lazily incorporate their song titles (“The Last Time,” “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)”). Their persistence — along with their ubiquitous classics and iconic tongue-and-lips logo — have made the Stones the most widely identifiable rock group in history.

In many ways, the Stones are as much a brand as a band, and one that apparently never goes out of style. Modeled by chic young adults, the vast array of apparel hawked on their website gives fashion houses a run for their money. While Taylor Swift inspires headlines about boosting local economies and altering countries’ inflation rates, the Stones remain a box-office juggernaut that regularly grosses upwards of $10 million per gig. This after creating the blueprint for stadium tours in the late ’80s.

Lineup alterations aside, little regarding the Stones has changed since they released their last great album (“Tattoo You”) in 1981. The primary differences today concern the environment in which the group operates. The concept of selling out no longer exists. Rock ‘n’ roll ceded its dominance to hip hop and pop decades ago. Standalone artists overtook groups in terms of star power. Consider: You don’t even need all the fingers on one hand to count how many bands formed since the dawn of the 21st century can fill a hockey arena for two shows.

Indeed, the sense that the imitable combination of sound, interplay and chemistry that transpired on the grand if somewhat minimalist Soldier Field stage might soon be difficult to come by seemed lost on no one — including the last three core Stones themselves and their supporting cast, particularly longtime keyboardist Chuck Leavell and Chicago native Darryl Jones, whose full-bodied bass lines provided a steadying element when other aspects wavered.

Sticking to the center of the stage, tufts of white-and-gray hair struggling to emerge beyond his trademark headband, Richards occasionally appeared reticent and noncommittal. The 80-year-old looked as if he’d slowed. He struck noticeably sour notes on “Start Me Up,” adopted a perfunctory stance during his vocal lead on a flat “Tell Me Straight” and required several songs to find his footing. Yet Richards’ personalized technique — he navigated by feeling, read what the material demanded and reacted accordingly, ignoring timing and placement conventions — corresponded to a manner of disciplined improvisation that can only be shaped over decades of experience.

When it sparked, his rapport with fellow guitarist Ron Wood gave diehards visions of a more youthful past and newer fans a reason to savor the moments when the duo locked into a groove and held tight. Jabbing and scraping their instruments’ strings, Richards and Wood juggled decay and distortion and communicated with scuffed tones, squawking riffs and sharp, twangy fills. The grittiest of their output doubled as rude interjections (“Little T&A”), R&B rejoinders (“Tumbling Dice”), clarion calls (“Jumpin’ Jack Flash”) and booze-soaked lures (“Honky Tonk Women”).

Mick Jagger, of The Rolling Stones, performs during a concert on June 27, 2024, at Soldier Field. (Vincent Alban/Chicago Tribune)

As expected, the Stones leveraged familiarity to their advantage. Along with one fan-selected song (a watered-down “She’s a Rainbow”) and one dusted-off gem (a reggae-tinted “Get Off of My Cloud”), four songs from their recent “Hackney Diamonds” LP cracked a setlist anchored by the same hits the group has featured for eons. Nothing released between 1981 and 2023 made the cut. Yes, people pay big bucks to hear favorites. But why not tackle one of the other seldom-played numbers (“Bite My Head Off,” “Fool to Cry,” “She’s So Cold”) that lost the popular vote? Or toss a couple of known albeit deeper tracks into the mix?

Instead, the energetic and attitudinal antidote to the pervasive politeness stemmed from Jagger. Adorned in black jeans, and modeling an assortment of jackets and shirts, the livewire singer justified the presence of both the stage’s short runway and extended wings. He strutted, waggled, pointed, shimmied, shuffled, summoned, pouted, preened and vogued. His petite hips turned on an imaginary swivel; his loose shoulders flirted with joint dislocation; his restless hands flapped as if trying to shake off a tingling numbness.

Save for the 15 minutes he went backstage and let Richards handle the microphone, Jagger alternated between the roles as singer, cheerleader, MC, jokester — he deemed the evening’s presidential debate “Viagarapalooza” — and storyteller. He touched on the band’s first trip to Chicago in 1964 and fortune at meeting its idols (Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry) at Chess Records. He failed to mention that the studio sat about a mile from where he currently stood, or that the Stones recorded a batch of songs while there. Too bad the group didn’t play one of them as a full-circle tribute.

Keith Richards, of The Rolling Stones, performs during a concert on June 27, 2024, at Soldier Field. (Vincent Alban/Chicago Tribune)

The closest the Rolling Stones got to musically acknowledging the city’s blues impact on their fare arrived during a tease of “Sweet Home Chicago” amid a harmonica-laden run-through of “Midnight Rambler.” The circa-1969 tune emerged as one of the few that hinted at its original menace. Another, a long-fuse reading of “Gimme Shelter,” also of ‘69 vintage, benefitted from the fiery participation and soulful blare of backup vocalist Chanel Haynes.

“War, children,” Jagger and Haynes sang, conscious of the ominous warnings that followed. “It’s just a shot away.” For the briefest instant, all the years and wrinkles melted away, and the Stones were again ragtag British dissidents spreading and sounding an urgent alarm amid an ever-tumultuous global climate. Godspeed.
