Fly Fishing Patagonia | Argentina & Chile

Why choose fly fishing in patagonia, patagonia fly fishing trips, our fly fishing lodges in patagonia, do i need a visa.

Argentina & Chile – No Visa is required for US Citizens, Canadians or European Union passengers for Argentina, just a valid passport.

How do I get there?

Argentina – To get to any of the Lodges in Argentina you will first need to travel to the main hub which is Buenos Aires (Ezeiza International Airport – EZE, Ministro Pistarini Airport). There are direct flights from Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York in the United States and many of the main cities in Europe also have direct flights (Madrid, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, etc.) Once you arrive to Ezeiza we recommend staying one night in Buenos Aires to get to know the city and to be able to catch your local flight to the Lodge you are going to. To get to the Lodges your flight will most likely depart from the Local Airport (Aeroparque – AEP, Jorge Newberry Airport). Please contact your trip coordinator so that they can recommend best flights to take. Local airline in Argentina is Aerolíneas Argentinas.

Chile (Futa Lodge) – Most of our clients fly-in through Buenos Aires, Argentina first and then fly into Esquel Airport (EQS) and cross the border by land. The land transfer from Esquel Airport to Futa Lodge is approximately 2 hours. You will go through migration and customs by land and then continue your drive to the Lodge. You can also fly in through Santiago de Chile (Santiago de Chile International Airport – SCL, Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport), from there you will have to take a flight to Puerto Montt (Puerto Montt Airport, PMC) and from there another short flight to Chaitén (Chaiten Airport, WCH). The land transfer from Chaitén to Futa Lodge is 2 hours approximately. If you are thinking of taking the second option get in touch with your coordinator so that they can recommend operators and flights.”

Do I need a Fishing License?

All of our destinations require a fishing license. We will ask you for the necessary information so that we can get the Fishing License prior to your arrival.

What should I pack?

Prior to your arrival we will be sending you information on the fishing program including a recommended packing list.

Do you provide loaner fishing equipment?

There are quality fly rods, reels and fly lines available at the Lodges for you to use if needed. Please advise us of your need for a rod/reel prior to arrival to ensure availability. A charge of $125 will be billed to you in the event a rental rod is broken (this covers the cost of shipping and repair). Flies and leaders are also available for purchase at the lodges.

Who will meet me at the airport?

For all our locations a lodge representative will meet you upon your arrival to the local airport holding a sign with the Lodge name so that you can identify them easily. If you are delayed or miss your flight, please let us know.

Can I combine trips?

If you are joining us at our Argentina or Chile lodges, you can easily add to your sporting adventure by combining your trip with either more fishing adding other species, or with a stay at one of our fine bird hunting lodges for the best Cast & Blast experience in South America. If you are interested in adding variety to your sporting life, look no further than David Denies Bird Hunting and Red Stag Patagonia. All three brands are owned and operated by the same company, The Kautapen Group, and each operation is dedicated to making your outdoor experience fun, memorable, and productive.

fly fishing trips patagonia

Spring time is a great time to be here for those who like all types of fishing. The water is high and clear; the Andes Mountains will still be covered in snow, and the green valleys filled with wild flowers. Streamer fishing is a good option; fishing with sinking tips can be very productive during the day. At certain times of the day, twitching big dry flies can make the fish angry and aggressive. You will find hungry fish that haven´t seen a fly for a while and will chase your fly out from under the banks. In certain rivers, you can find rainbows feeding below the willows, which are easy to catch on dries. Temperatures are usually in the 70´s.

fly fishing trips patagonia

The rivers are at the best water level and dry fly fishing is great. You will be fishing mayfly and caddis hatches during the morning, and in the afternoon, hoppers, beetles, ants, and crickets will make for a fun fishing day. The size of the tippet starts to matter, so 3x to 5x will be used. Temperatures are usually between the 70 to 90.

fly fishing trips patagonia

Tourism starts to decrease in the fall, and it is a great time to be in Patagonia. The days get cooler, which brings good mayfly hatches and trout start feeding on the surface again. Foam lines get a bunch of trout lined up looking towards the surface. Browns start to migrate back to the rivers to spawn, so the chances of a trophy brown increase. Fall colors in Patagonia are amazing and you will also see herds of red stag after a good day of fishing. Those who have the chance to come at this time of year will really understand the tranquility and beauty that this place has to offer. Temperatures are usually in the low 60´s.

PATAGONIA ON THE FLY will give guests the opportunity to plan their trip depending on the type of fishing they like most and their fishing experience. The variety of water is so extensive; rivers like the Chimehuin, Alumine, Collon Cura, Malleo, Caleufue and Limay offer some of the finest fishing in all of Patagonia, with great hatches of mayflies, caddis, stoneflies and incredible minnow runs, willow worms, terrestrials and pancora crabs. Guests can choose to spend their days fishing from drift boats or wading the productive waters. Staying in the Estancias, they will get to fish the best waters at the best time of the day, have short drives, which gives guests the opportunity to get back to the lodge if it´s necessary, and non-fishermen can enjoy the beauty these Estancias have combining days with hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, and more.

Nicolas Schinocca

Born in San Martin de los Andes. At the age of 11, he caught his first fish on a fly rod and since then has spent all of his summers fishing the amazing Patagonian rivers and lakes with his father and brothers. Fishing and skiing became his passion. A full-time fishing guide since 2008, Nico has always looked for new fishing areas to explore. Before joining the Ski Patrol at Chapelco, he used to guide on the Amazon for Golden Dorado during the winter months. A day with him on the river will be a blast and many bent rods.

Argentina Fly Fishing Lodges

Where the Fish are Wild, Strong, and Fast

Argentina’s vast, mountainous, and open landscape creates a sharp contrast to the lush and temperate rainforest environment that characterizes the majority of neighboring Chile. The country is noted for its rich culture, friendly people, an abundance of excellent food (arguably the finest steak in the world), amazing Malbec wines, and of course, an impressive variety of freshwater gamefish that are wild, strong, and eager to take a fly. With an expansive line-up of fishing options, a strong network of established lodges, and experienced guides and outfitters that know their waters like the back of their hands, Argentina is a great choice for adventurous anglers eager to experience the finest in freshwater fly fishing.

Jurassic Lake Lodge

Step into a realm where reality bends and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Join us at Jurassic Lake for an immersive once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience like no other during our exclusive “30 anniversary Eclipse Week” from September 28 to October 5, 2024.

Thirty years ago, the last annular eclipse graced the skies of Argentina. That same year, rainbow trout were introduced into the waters of the Barrancoso River. Now, exactly three decades after that cosmic event, it repeats right over the sky of Jurassic Lake.

Is it mere coincidence?

At our lodge, the celestial cycle unfolds, and we extend an invitation to partake in its mysteries. Whether you choose to immerse yourself in the universe’s energies or simply reflect on the passage of time, we honor the visionaries who transformed this locale into the world’s premier trout fishing destination.

Witness how daylight turns into surreal twilight around us, and most importantly, observe the impact of the “ring of fire” on the behavior of the fish as they are suddenly immersed into twilight. Questions emerge as we venture into the realm of the unknown.

Will they become more active?  Confused?  Aggressive?  How will they react when light returns? Nobody knows…

fly fishing trips patagonia

During the eclipse, the behavior of trout may undergo some fascinating changes. As the celestial event casts its ethereal glow upon the waters, trout may become disoriented or confused by the sudden shift in light levels. Some may retreat to deeper waters, seeking refuge from the unfamiliar conditions, while others may become more active, drawn to the mysterious energy of the eclipse.

Trout are known to be sensitive to changes in their environment, and the sudden darkness of an eclipse could trigger a feeding frenzy as they take advantage of the cover provided by the twilight. Alternatively, some trout may become more cautious and wary, making them more challenging to catch.

Overall, the eclipse presents a unique opportunity for anglers to observe and interact with trout in a rare and extraordinary setting. Whether the fish become more active or elusive during the eclipse remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the experience will be unforgettable.

Secure your spot for this extraordinary fishing week from September 28 to October 5, 2024, a prime time week where the convergence of natural wonders and legendary fishing awaits.

With no outlet, this is by far and away the best location allowing anglers to stack up big numbers of trout every day. The Trip, Day 72: Australia (including Tasmania)

fly fishing trips patagonia

Alberto Rey  is a longtime Upstate New York steelhead guide, 2021 Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year, and a Distinguished Professor for Research and Creative Activity at the State University of New York at Fredonia. He and his wife have embarked on a round-the-world trip, and they have generously agreed to share occasional updates from their travels.

It is difficult to encapsulate my thoughts about our travel in Australia because of our many experiences during our 18 days in Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and Hobart (Tasmania). I have tried to write daily summaries on Instagram and Facebook to document the trip more fully. These entries for the Orvis blog provide a more reflective overview of specific locations, videos and  artwork created.

fly fishing trips patagonia

We have always tried to balance our days between the cities and the countryside. Although every city is unique in what it offers to the visitor, to experience the true character of a region, we’ve found that we need to explore its natural environment. It is as enlightening, if not more so, to explore the coastline, the rainforest, the reefs and rivers as it is to experience the museums, opera houses, historical landmarks, and restaurants. Fly fishing becomes an integral way to connect with these environments. The more time you spend on the water, the more likely you will be to bond with the environment and increase your odds of having memorable experiences. Hiring a fly-fishing guide can be a critical step toward experiencing the hidden treasures and subtleties that each river possesses. Because we had limited time in each location and wanted to take full advantage of our trip, we always hired guides (when available) and have never been disappointed with that decision.

fly fishing trips patagonia

There is a tendency to believe that since you’ve traveled thousands of miles, you should catch a fish relative to the size of your travel effort. The reality I have experienced is that not all streams hold trophy-sized fish and even if they do, there is no guarantee that you will catch one due to countless reasons, most of which might be out of your control. Luckily, each river possesses its own beauty and uniqueness that makes it unlike any other stream you may have fished before. I have always found it important to travel and fish with high hopes and low expectations.

In Tasmania, our guide, Jason Barrett of Miena Fishing Village, provided a full-service experience by picking me up at the hotel; providing waders, boots, and fly-fishing gear; and then driving us two hours to our fishing location on the Tyenna River. Jason put me on the most productive and attractive stretches of the river while positioning me in the exact spots, so I could cast to the residential fish without spooking the rest of the fish on the beat. One of the most memorable moments of the trip was when the rarely-seen platypus came over to us and repeatedly swam a few feet from me as I fished.  Although the fishing was not easy due to slippery rocks and lethargic fish, we still managed to have a memorable trip and landed many fish.

fly fishing trips patagonia

On the Australian mainland, in Cairns, I was surprised to learn of the generous number of fresh- and saltwater fly-fishing opportunities that were available. I was fortunate to secure a last-minute fly-fishing trip to the Hinchinbrook Channel with John Snell. As in other locations around the world, rain and high winds (20 knot winds) had limited our fishing options. The Hinchinbrook was our only option, and it provided the opportunity to wrangle with some trophy species, including barramundi and GTs along with several other saltwater species.

John met us early in the morning towing his 18-foot Hewes skiff, which he had shipped in from the previous owner in Alabama. This sleek, fast boat allowed us to fish many different mangrove outcroppings throughout the day, as the conditions changed with the tides. Additionally, the boat provided protection from the saltwater crocodiles that also ply these waters. A large barramundi hit my fly as soon as my line touched the water, but I was caught off guard and was not able to hook the fish. It seemed like a promising start to the trip, but even though John continually sped us to what had recently been productive spots, it took another six hours and hundreds of casts before I landed my first fish.  After that point, others were landed and more fish were missed. In the end, the channel was incredibly beautiful. I added a couple of species to my list of fish caught, learned a few new fishing techniques with innovative flies, and convinced my wife to take on the role of videographer.

fly fishing trips patagonia

We continue to feel fortunate that we are in good health and good spirits.  The anxiety that plagued past trips, seems to have evaporated through the sheer repetition of traveling. Although we have been traveling for 72 days, we still can’t wait to see what is around the next bend or what new experiences the next stop will provide.
