View fireworks, savor delicious street food, and experience tradition
Festivals are deeply rooted in japanese culture. be sure to plan your visit so you can join a festival. .
Japan’s four seasons are very distinct and are full of nature and seasonal fun no matter what time of year it is. Festivals are often focused around nature, whether it's a plea for it to settle down or to show gratitude for its natural gifts. Some very famous festivals are in celebration and admiration of things like flowers and snow. They are also community building events, with some that are on a national scale and others that just take place in the local area. Festivals always bring out the best in people. Be sure to time your trip accordingly so you have the chance to partake in one of Japan’s many festivals.
Spring (March-May)
The Mito Plum Blossom Festival in Ibaraki takes you to a dreamy meadow of blossoming pink and white plum trees. This festival is held from February to March, and one of the biggest in eastern Japan, and its 3,000 plum trees coming back to life are a hats off to a long, cold winter.
If you're up for some early spring skiing, head to Echigo Yuzawa Onsen in Niigata, and watch skiers descend the slopes holding torches at the Echigo Yuzawa Snow Festival . Don’t miss out on the entrancing fireworks display, relaxing onsen, and delicious street food either.
March-April
In Aomori, the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival boasts 2,600 trees, some of which are over 300 years old. They are best viewed at night when there is a beautiful illumination of Hirosaki Castle.
The Takayama Spring Festival is less dedicated to the cherry blossoms and more so to music and the float-like centerpieces called “Yatai.”
If you’re looking for a more eclectic experience, check out the week-long Kamakura Festival . Horse riding, archery, dancing, and an outdoor tea ceremony are all highlights of the festival. The traditional Shizuka no Mai dance performance is based on the story of Lady Shizuka, a prominent figure of Japanese history and literature.
If you're a summer person and can't wait for the warmer weather, the Sanja Festival is the place to be.
Lively parades with mikoshi (portable shrines) and elaborate shrines come together in this event in Asakusa of Tokyo.
One of the biggest festivals in Japan, the Hakata Dontaku Festival typically unites 30,000 participants and attracts over two million guests every year. The main attractions of this festival are the performances and parades.
Summer (June-August)
The Atsuta Festival in Aichi offers a robust combination of lantern displays, delicious food, and dancing. Held at a nearly 2,000-year-old shrine, this is a great opportunity to explore unique Japanese traditions.
This culture filled event inspired by the times of feudal Japan, the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival , is a great way to see some interesting samurai reenactments, drum performances, and a spectacular parade.
The Gion Festival is a massive event in central Kyoto that's been going on since 869. There are plenty of things to enjoy like parades, family heirlooms on display, huge floats, and lively night parties. A word to the wise, you will want to book your accommodation months in advance.
July-September
A bustling, dance-packed event known as the Gujo Odori Festival is a celebration that takes place from July to September in Gifu. Just go with the flow and learn one of the 10 different dances.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival attracts more than 3 million guests with its huge 3D papier mache floats. It's a great opportunity to dance, but you have to be in costume. Head up to Aomori in the beginning of August for this 5-day event.
Tokushima has a great dance festival as well, called the Awa Odori Festival . There are many different performances, and you can even join some of them without registration. This festival is the heart of the area, and much heritage is involved in its production.
Autumn (September-November)
Originally created to appease the winds and pray for safety from natural disasters, the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival combines music, folk tales, pageantry, and mesmerizing dance moves that make for an elegant experience.
The Kakunodate Festival uniquely joins the hands of Buddhism and Shinto in this rare, dramatic event. Clashing floats, music, dancing, and artistry collide to make the festival come to life. Musical battles between floats in a historic Edo town makes for quite the experience.
The Kawagoe Festival features unique floats that are all very intricately decorated and each contain a doll that represents a legendary figure.
The Nagasaki Kunchi is a great place to experience a dragon dance that has been inspired by Chinese culture. You can also try some interesting festival food called “hashimaki,” which are basically okonomiyaki rolled around chopsticks.
As it gets colder and the leaves start to change color, the Fujiwara Autumn Festival in Iwate is an amazing sight to see. At the Chusonji Temple, the colorful chrysanthemums are put on immaculate display. You won’t want to miss out on the breathtaking beauty and parade at this 3-day event.
Winter (December-February)
An event founded on history, as well as a plea to rid Japan of disease, is the Kasuga Wakamiya Onmatsuri Festival . This is a great opportunity to get your fill of incredible music performances and feudal Japan, as you will see participants dressed up in ancient Japanese attire.
“Namahage” are a kind of spirit that somewhat resemble demons wearing masks and costumes. They are frightening, but they are actually benevolent spirits that bring good fortune to families. Paying tribute, men dress up like them at the Oga no Namahage on the Oga peninsula of Akita. Head there to experience this exciting event on New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s in Japan is remarkably festive, but the Toka Ebisu Festival at Imamiya Ebisu Shrine in Osaka around January 10th is considered to be even more exciting than New Year’s day, with crowds of people praying for prosperous business in the year to come.
Additionally, the Yunishigawa Kamakura Festival in Tochigi takes place from late January until early March and is famous for its nighttime illumination of its kamakura snow huts.
One internationally famous festival you don't want to miss in early February is the weeklong Sapporo Snow Festival . The snow sculptures have gained fame, and rightfully so. Some of the impressive works of art are the size of buildings, and some are expert recreations of famous anime characters among other things.
Further south in Kyushu at the beginning of February, the Nagasaki Lantern Festival boasts streets filled with lanterns.
Something different
Turn up the heat by attending Japan’s Fire Festivals, one of which is the blazing Nachi Fire Festival on July 14th in Wakayama. The highlight of this festival is when participants carry twelve blazing portable shrines that resemble the Nachi Falls .
Late spring is the setting for flower festivals. One of the big spring flower festivals is in Hitachi Seaside Park of Ibaraki when the nemophila blanket the fields in a stunning baby blue. There are also lots of events showcasing regional food at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo, and Japan's conference centers and forums play host to all kinds of events from tourism forums to presentations of the latest technology.

Are you in Japan in July 2024? The summer is by far the best season if you want to experience one of Japan’s lively matsuri festivals. These festivals are held all over the country, so you have to be a bit lucky to be in the right spot at the right time, but let us make it easier for you to run into one of these vibrant celebrations. Here is an overview of 10 of the best Japanese festivals in July 2024!
1. Hakata Gion Yamakasa (Fukuoka)

If you’d like to see some vigorous action during a matsuri, the Hakata Gion Yamakasa in Fukuoka is a great festival. In the early morning of July 15th just before sunrise 7 teams of float carriers start racing the kakiyama floats through a 5 kilometer long course at a high tempo and whichever team does that the fastest wins the race. Even though it is early in the morning, there is always a large audience because it is so spectacular to see the men exerting themselves to the max. If you can’t make it on that morning, you may still be able to see one of the practice runs between July 10 and 14, and between July 1 and 14 you can see larger floats exhibited throughout the city including 2 at Hakata Station.
When : July 1 (Sat.) – July 15 (Sat.), 2024
Where : around the Hakata Station area, start point at the Kushida Shrine
By far one of the most famous festivals in Japan is the Gion Festival which has been held by the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto since the 9th century. Its inception was caused by an epidemic at that time when people wanted to put the gods in a better mood. The festival’s pinnacle is a 3-km long parade of mikoshi floats, one of them bearing a local boy who was chosen to be the divine messenger that year, that proceed through an area east of the Kamo River on July 17th, but festivities are already held from July 1st so even if you are in Kyoto a bit too early you can still catch some of the festival’s traditional but lively atmosphere. The roads are closed to cars, and you can enjoy the many food stands and typical Japanese festival games. There is even a second smaller parade that takes place on July 24th if you can’t make it to the main event.
When : between July 1 (Sat.) – July 31 (Fri.) 2024, with a main event on July 17 between 9 am – 1 pm. Second smaller parade on July 24th.
Where : Oike, Kawaramachi, and Shijo streets in Kyoto
Minamichita is a peninsula in the south of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture , and normally it is not really on the radar of non-local tourists, but during one of the last weekends of July an interesting event takes place. It is the Toyohama Red Sea Bream Festival, during which huge breams that are made of bamboo and cotton are carried through the town’s streets after which they are brought to the seaside to fight. By doing this, the locals hope that the gods will provide them with a bountiful catch for the year to come. You can watch the spectacle from the sides of the streets along with around 5000 others who flock to the small town to see the spectacle.
When : Usually late July, likely the 27th and 28th *We will update the dates for 2024 when it’s officially announced
Where : best viewing spots are east of the Toyohama intersection on route 247 just before noon, and from about 12.30 pm at Toyohama Fishing Port
Every year on July 14th, a fiery Shinto ritual takes place at the well-known Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine in the forests of Wakayama . Twelve very large torches are carried down a path leading from the shrine to the waterfall to purify the route for the spirits that follow afterwards. The torch bearers don’t just carry the torches quietly, the procession is accompanied by religious chanting while they wield the torches around spreading the smoke far and wide.
When : July 14
Where : Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine
The Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture is renowned for its beautiful natural sights and quiet picturesque villages, but between July and September the peace and calm of the summer nights are regularly ‘disturbed’ by Kiriko festivals. These are regional festivals that feature Kiriko, which are very large lanterns that are used to light up the portable shrines that are taken around towns during all kinds of small local festivals. There are around 200 festivals each year on the peninsula where Kiriko are on display, so if you travel around the area during that time you are bound to run into one. Check out the official website here for more information.
When : between July and September 2024
Where : various towns throughout the Noto Peninsula
The Tenjin Festival of Osaka is one of the 3 greatest festivals of Japan, so if you are thinking about attending, get ready for crowds and merriment all around. Held since the 10th century, this festival is celebrated to honor the Tenmangu Shrine’s deity of scholarship, Sugawara. His spirit is paraded through the streets with all kinds of festivities taking place to entertain the spirit (and the people). The area becomes a frenzy of kimono-clad people dancing to the traditional sound of the flutes and drums, and the procession even continues into the river as a river parade. The festival closes with a large fireworks display on the river while the illuminated boats are still there, making for a fantastic sight.
When : July 24 and 25, with the main festivities taking place on July 25 throughout the day until 9 pm (The fireworks show has been canceled due to the pandemic)
Where : Tenmangu Shrine and surroundings in Osaka
The purpose of the Gujo Odori, a dance festival in the rural Gifu prefecture that stretches over nearly the whole summer, is to bring the people together regardless of their background or social class. It is in this spirit of inclusivity that everyone is encouraged to participate in the dance, even if you have no idea how to do it. There is always someone who’s happy to teach you the movements, and none of the 10 different dances are very difficult or at a high tempo. To really feel like a part of the scene, you can rent a yukata (summer kimono) and even wear traditional geta shoes, although this is not mandatory. Almost all evenings between mid-July and early September there is a Gujo Odori dance going on somewhere in the prefecture, attracting tens of thousands of people throughout the period.
When : between mid-July and the first week of September with a peak during Obon in mid-August
Where : on different locations each day, check their calendar for updated information
Kumagaya in Saitama prefecture , famous for its silk production in the past, is easy to reach by train from Tokyo in less than one hour and between July 20th and 22nd it is very much worth the trek up north. The whole area around Kumagaya Station turns into one big festival terrain during the Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri that attracts many hundreds of thousands of visitors for its vibrant, energetic atmosphere with plenty to feast your eyes and mouth on. The festival’s main attractions are the elaborately decorated floats that became so beautiful because of the rich merchants who had a hand in making them want to show off their wealth in the floats. As its name implies, hand fans (uchiwa in Japanese) are handed out by shops wanting to promote their wares, so you can keep yourself cool when you get too hot while dancing to the traditional music.
When : July 20-22, with one of the highlights happening at 6 pm on July 22 with all the floats gathering on Festival Square
Where : around Kumagaya Station
If you like fireworks, attending one of the largest fireworks festivals in Japan should definitely be on your bucket list. The Sumida River Fireworks Festival in Tokyo is held in the last week of July. The event kicks off at 7pm and runs for about 90 minutes. Make sure to get there a little bit early to find a perfect spot to view the fireworks from.
When : July 27 (Sat.) 2024
Where : along the Sumida River near Asakusa, Tokyo. If you are looking for a less-crowded spot with still a decent view you can go to Shiori Park or Oyokogawa Water Park
Compared to other festivals around the country, with only 3,000 fireworks, the Nagoya Port Fireworks Festival seems relatively small. However, the scenic location still attracts over 300,000 people every year. This a fairly simple fireworks show but one that should not be missed if you happen to be in the area. The demonstrations use creative colors to maximize the show despite the smaller size.
When : July 15th, 7:30
Where : Nagoya Port

1. Aizen Festival: Japan's Oldest Summer Festival
The Aizen Festival is held in June at Aizendo Shomanin Temple in Osaka's Tennoji Ward. It's famous as Japan's oldest summer festival and dates back some 1,400 years.
Aizendo Shomanin Temple, also affectionately known as Aizen-san by the local residents, is a spot where visitors come to pray for good health in the summer—historically a time of the year when epidemics spread easily.
The festival highlight is a traditional event known as the Hoekago Parade. During this event, young women (Aizen musume) dressed in summer kimonos called yukata, sit on a seat in a box (kago) and are carried by a group of people by means of two poles. The parade winds it way through the crowd in gorgeous fashion while people call out for business prosperity.
On the afternoon of June 30 the parade leaves Tennoji Park for Aizendo.
Food Stalls: Many stalls are typically set up on the temple grounds. Fireworks: Not held.
The 2024 Aizen Festival is scheduled to be held from Sunday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 2. For details please see the official website (Japanese).

The Hiranogo Summer Festival is held at Kumata Shrine in Osaka's Hirano Ward. It's famous as one of Osaka's leading danjiri festivals, and it annually attracts more than 300,000 people.
The highlight is the evening of July 12 and 13. Elegant danjiri (decorative parade floats on wheels) representing nine neighborhoods from the former Hiranogo area make their appearance!
The nine floats compete in a pulling contest as they travel along Nanko-dori Street and head to the precincts of Kumata Shrine.
Food Stalls: 50 to 100 food stalls are typically set up. Fireworks: Not held
The 2024 Hiranogo Summer Festival is scheduled to be held from Thursday, July 11 to Sunday, July 14. For details please see the official homepage (Japanese).
3. Taikodai Festival: See 7 Magnificent Taiko Floats!
The Taikodai Festival is held at Kanda Shrine in Kaizuka City. This summer festival has a history of about 280 years.
As the festival's name suggests, it features a large taiko drum sitting on a portable shrine (mikoshi). Each of these gigantic drum floats weigh about 1.5 tons.
The floats carry both taiko drummers and children. It's an amazing sight to see them parade around the shrine with enthusiastic chants! Then, the night is illuminated by lanterns creating a magnificent atmosphere.
Food Stalls and Fireworks: Not available
The 2024 Taikodai Festival is scheduled to be held from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, July 14. For details please see the official homepage .
4. Tenjin Festival: One of Japan's Three Main Festivals
The Tenjin Festival is an annual event that's held at Tenmangu Shrines located in every part of Japan. Osaka's Tenjin Festival is famous throughout the country and has a history dating back more than 1,000 years!
The highlight of the festival is Funatogyo, or the water procession, which is held on July 25. More than 100 boats come and go along the Okawa River (north of Osaka Castle) amid the sounds of taiko drumming and energetic chants!
One of the charms of Osaka's summer is the pyrotechnical display. About 1,300,000 people come to watch the 3,000 votive fireworks.
Food Stalls: Available Fireworks: Held at sunset on Thursday, July 25, 2024
The 2024 Tenjin Festival is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25. For details please see the official homepage (Japanese).
5. Sumiyoshi Festival: See a Large Mikoshi Go Across a River!
The Sumiyoshi Festival is held at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Osaka City's Sumiyoshi Ward. The festival is also known as Oharai, and it holds a ceremony to purify all of Osaka. This 3-day event attracts 300,000 people!
The main highlight is Mikoshitogyo, a parade of mikoshi portable shrines held on August 1. This parade starts at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine and continues along a five-kilometer stretch until it reaches Shukuin Tongu Shrine. The powerful sight of the mikoshi being carried across the Okawa River is truly impressive!
Food Stalls: Yet to be decided for 2024 Fireworks: Not held
The 2024 Sumiyoshi Festival is scheduled to be held from Tuesday, July 30 to Thursday, August 1. For details please see the official homepage .
Otaue Shinji (June): A Rice-Planting Ritual To Pray for a Good Harvest
Otaue Shinji (Sacred Rice Planting) is a traditional rite that's held at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine on June 14. It's performed in order to pray for a bountiful harvest.
This ritual is also performed at shrines throughout the country. However, at Sumiyoshi Taisha, the ceremony is known for not being simplified, and its scale is also magnificent. There are performances by shrine maidens and rice-planting dances by children.
September: A Bright Red Sorihashi Bridge and Full Moon Stand Out
Kangetsu-sai (Moon-Viewing Festival) is a Shinto ritual that's held during the evening of the Harvest Moon.
This ritual is known for the beautiful magical atmosphere created by the full moon and the famous Sorihashi Bridge—a symbol for Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.

The Takatsuki Festival is a civic event that attracts 100,000 people every summer.
It features many highlights including a Bon Odori Parade performed by skilled dancers, held along Keyaki-Odori Street in front of Takatsuki City Hall and at the Takatsuki Arts Theater. There's also a spectacular parade filled with performances by the Takatsuki Firemen's Band.
The festival is held at various venues throughout the city, and can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.

The Hassaku Festival is held at Aguchi Shrine in Sakai City. It's a historic festival that's been around for more than 600 years.
It's highlighted by four distinctive floats known as "Futon Daiko." Futon Daiko is a large float with a taiko drum on top. These are often seen in the Kansai Region and are carried by groups of people by means of two long poles—just like the mikoshi portable shrines are.
The elegantly decorated Futon Daiko is carried by about 60 people. The sight of this float making its way to Aguchi Shrine is simply dynamic!
Food Stalls: Yet to be decided for 2024, but stalls were set up in 2023. Fireworks: Not held
The 2024 Hassaku Festival is scheduled to be held from Friday, September 8 to Wednesday, September 13. For details please see the official homepage (Japanese).

Mozu Hachimangu is a shrine located next to World Heritage Site, Daisen Kofun.
The Mozu Hachimangu Fall Festival , held in conjunction with the Harvest Moon, is visited annually by more than 100,000 people.
The highlight of this festival is a votive event in which Shinto-shrine parishioners from nine towns carry a Futon Daiko . The taiko drum really stands out with its fine workmanship which uses expensive ebony and rosewood!
Food Stalls: Many stalls are typically set up on the shrine precincts. Fireworks: Not held
The 2024 Mozuhachimangu Fall Festival is scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. For details please see the official homepage (Japanese).
9. Kishiwada Danjiri Festival-Colorful Floats and Lively Shouts!
It's been said that Kishiwada City's Kishiwada Danjiri Festival first started about 300 years ago as a prayer for a good harvest.
The city is divided into two separate districts and the festival is held twice: once in September and also in October. September's version is considered to be more famous.
There are powerful and energetic performances you won't want to miss! This includes the narimono-gakari who beats the taiko drum and plays the flute atop the danjiri float, and the daiku-gata (carpenter) who performs an elegant dance on the roof of the float.
The top highlight of this event is "yarimawashi"—a maneuver in which the danjiri float negotiates the intersection at a 90-degree angle. This four-ton float is pulled through the streets amid energetic shouts and cries.
Food Stalls: Many stalls are typically set up. Fireworks: Not held
The 2024 Kishiwada Danjiri Festival is scheduled to be held from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15, and also on October 6 (Sunday), 12 (Saturday), and 13 (Sunday). For details please see the official homepage .

One of the unique festivals where participants parade with painted bellies is the "Hokkai Heso Matsuri ," held annually on July 28 and 29 in Furano , Hokkaido. Located in the center of Hokkaido, Furano is considered the "navel" of the region. The festival aims to strengthen the bonds between parents, citizens, and participants through this symbolic "navel." It has become one of the major events in Furano , set amidst its beautiful natural surroundings.
The festival takes place in the shopping district in front of Furano Station in Hokkaido. Participants paint faces, called "zubara," on their bellies and parade with their stomachs exposed, dancing to the rhythm of the "Hokkai Heso Ondo" chant, "Iijanai ka, Iijanai ka" ("Isn't it great, isn't it great"). The impressive artwork on their large bellies is truly a sight to behold!
This festival originated during Japan's period of rapid economic growth in the 1960s. The idea emerged in Furano City, with residents expressing a desire for a new event that everyone could participate in. During discussions for the annual August commerce festival, someone suggested incorporating a dance themed around the city's central marker stone (symbolizing the center of Hokkaido), using the "navel" as a concept. The first event was held on August 15, 1969, with preparations including the lyrics and composition of the "Hokkai Heso Ondo," choreography for the dance, and the creation of the "zubara" belly paintings. The debut featured 301 dancers, with 290 in yukata and 11 with painted bellies.
In 2024, the festival theme is "Dance at Night ~56th Summer ~." A highlight is the Hokkai Heso Dance Competition, where participants paint faces called "zubara" on their bellies and dance. These unique belly paintings display a variety of expressions, bringing laughter to the audience. You can join in on the fun as spontaneous participation on the day is welcome (participation fee: 3,000 yen, subject to change), making it a perfect opportunity to watch or dance and create unforgettable summer memories in Furano . The venue also features the Heso Special Market, where local Furano restaurants offer their culinary specialties, along with taiko drum and calligraphy performances.
- Dates: July 28–29, 2024
- Location: Special venue on Shin-Aioi Street, Asahimachi 4, Furano, Hokkaido
- Admission: Free to watch / 3,000 yen for spontaneous participation (subject to change)

Held annually on August 26 and 27 in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, near the iconic Mount Fuji , the Yoshida Fire Festival is a spectacular event. With over 450 years of history, it is counted among Japan's three most unique festivals and Japan's top ten fire festivals. Recognized as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Yamanashi Prefecture, this festival is a standout event representing Fujiyoshida.
The Yoshida Fire Festival is celebrated by two shrines : Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine . The festival begins on the afternoon of August 26 at Suwa Shrine . By dusk, over 100 large torches, each standing 3 meters tall and shaped like bamboo shoots, are lit simultaneously, turning the town into a sea of fire that continues late into the night. On August 27, mikoshi (portable shrines ) are carried through the streets in a grand procession.
Originally, the festival was a celebration of Suwa Shrine . According to legend, when the deity of Suwa was fleeing from pursuers, the local residents welcomed the deity with torches. Seeing the torches, the pursuers mistook them for reinforcements and fled, allowing the deity to stay in the area for a while. This event is said to be the origin of the festival, held to honor the Suwa deity, although the exact details remain unclear.
A highlight of the festival is the breathtaking sight of over 100 large torches being lit around 6:30 PM on the 26th. The road, illuminated by these torches over a distance of about 2 kilometers, creates an enchanting scene that leaves spectators in awe. The torches burn brightly into the night, enhancing the festival's lively atmosphere. As a sacred event, the festival also features numerous shrine officials and traditional Kagura performances (dances and songs dedicated to the gods), offering a uniquely Japanese experience.

The National Kokeshi Festival, celebrating the charming kokeshi dolls, is held in Miyagi Prefecture . This traditional festival features works from artisans of 11 kokeshi lineages primarily from the Tohoku region. It began in 1948 to commemorate the establishment of a monument for the kokeshi enthusiast, Kaname Fukazawa. Renamed the National Kokeshi Festival in 1953, it will celebrate its 69th edition in 2024.
Kokeshi are wooden dolls crafted with the skilled techniques of lathes and kanna (wood shaving tools), a tradition that has been passed down since the late Edo period. Originating as souvenirs from the hot spring regions of Tohoku, they developed unique shapes and decorations specific to each area. Among the various traditional kokeshi, "Naruko Kokeshi" are primarily made from mizuki (dogwood) wood. A distinctive feature of Naruko Kokeshi is their ability to make a "kya-kya" sound when the head is turned. Their warm wooden texture and charming, gentle expressions provide a sense of comfort. The National Kokeshi Festival aims to promote the beauty of traditional kokeshi, providing a venue for artisans to gather, hone their skills, and foster the growth and development of this traditional craft.
At the venue, you can enjoy a variety of activities including an exhibition of award-winning works from the National Kokeshi Festival competition, live demonstrations by artisans, sales, and a paid painting experience. The festival draws many kokeshi enthusiasts. On Saturday night, the Naruko Onsen town hosts a festival parade, featuring the elegant "Naruko Dance" performed in kokeshi-patterned yukata. The parade includes large papier-mâché kokeshi over two meters tall and mikoshi adorned with kokeshi designs, creating an evening filled with kokeshi-themed excitement.
At the same venue, you can also visit the Naruko Lacquerware Exhibition and the Edo Shitamachi Craftsmen Exhibition from Taito Ward, Tokyo. Naruko Onsen , one of Japan's premier hot spring areas, boasts seven of the ten types of hot spring waters found in Japan. In addition to the festival, you can enjoy hot spring hopping, offering a full experience of kokeshi, hot springs , and Japanese culture.

The Nagata Hyottoko Dance, a traditional performance passed down since the Meiji era, takes place in the Shiomi Nagata district of Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. To preserve this cultural heritage and promote regional revitalization and tourism, the Hyuga Hyottoko Summer Festival was established in 1984.
"Hyottoko" refers to a comical character often depicted wearing a mask with pursed lips. The name is believed to derive from "Hiotoko" ("fire man"), referring to a man blowing on a fire. The Nagata Hyottoko Dance, passed down in this region, is performed on various occasions to celebrate a good harvest and wish for prosperous business. It is also recognized as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Hyuga City.
The festival has an interesting origin story. Long ago, a couple named Hyosuke and Okame prayed every morning to the Inari deity for children. One day, a hungry priest ate the offerings, angering the deity, who appeared as a fox. However, the fox was captivated by Okame's beauty and began dancing to get her attention. Mesmerized, Okame, Hyosuke, and the villagers joined in the dance. This story inspired the creation of the dance performed at the festival.
The unique masks with their comical expressions and the writhing dance movements make this festival a one-of-a-kind, joyous event that brings smiles to everyone watching. For those who want more than just spectating, anyone who loves the Hyottoko Dance can participate, whether in a group or as an individual, regardless of age or gender. The participation fee is 1,000 yen per person, and registration is open from late May to late June.

One of Japan's three major fire festivals, the Yamaguchi Tanabata Lantern Festival, is held in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The city center is adorned with red lanterns, creating a beautiful sight as they light up the summer night. This festival is beloved not only by locals but also by many visitors.
The festival's origins date back about 600 years to the Muromachi period (around 1400). The Ouchi family, who ruled the area from their base in Yamaguchi Prefecture for 200 years, initiated this tradition. The 26th head of the family, Moriakira Ouchi, lit high lanterns made of bamboo to pray for his ancestors' souls. This act inspired a bon festival for families to honor their ancestors, a tradition that continues to this day. (*Bon festival: A Japanese event to welcome and honor the spirits of ancestors.)
Lanterns, made by constructing a frame with bamboo or wire and covering it with paper, were traditionally illuminated with candles. Before the advent of electricity, they were essential for lighting up festivals. During the Bon festival, from August 13 to 16, lanterns were displayed in front of homes as guides to help ancestral spirits find their way back. Today, many lanterns use light bulbs instead of candles and serve as both lighting and decorative elements.
During the festival, the central shopping arcade is adorned with countless lanterns, creating an enchanting tunnel of light. Various hands-on activities are available, including lighting lanterns, carrying lantern mikoshi, and writing wishes on tanzaku lanterns. This interactive approach ensures that visitors can actively participate and enjoy the festival. Additionally, booths featuring local Yamaguchi cuisine provide a delightful gourmet experience. (*Details for the 2024 festival are currently being planned.)
- Dates: August 6–7, 2024
- Location: Central shopping arcade, Kameyama Park Fureai Plaza, Ichinosaka River Traffic Exchange Plaza, Route 204, Yamaguchi City
- Participation: Open to everyone (advance registration required for lantern lighting and mikoshi carrying experiences)
- Notes: Parking is limited. Lanterns are lit with real candles; please be cautious to avoid burns (mikoshi lanterns use LEDs).

Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival, or “Sakura Matsuri,” is a centuries-old celebration marking the ephemeral beauty of the cherry blossoms. The festival spans several weeks from late March to early May, varying by region due to the geographical spread of the islands.
The sight of cherry blossoms blooming en masse across parks, temples, and riversides is a deeply ingrained symbol of spring, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life in Japanese culture. Cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka host some of the most iconic viewing spots, where hanami (flower viewing) parties bring people together under canopied blooms.
Insider’s Tip: For a less crowded experience, consider visiting lesser-known spots such as Hirosaki Park in Aomori or the Mount Yoshino area in Nara.
When to Travel: Late March to early April for most of Japan, extending into May for northern regions.
How to Get There: Major festival locations are well-connected by Japan’s extensive public transportation network. International visitors typically fly into Tokyo or Osaka, where they can use bullet trains, buses, or domestic flights to reach specific festival sites.

Fuji Shibazakura Festival is located three kilometers from Lake Motosuko. It is a festival that lasts for more than one month and features over 800,000 moss phlox flowers. Fuji Shibazakura Festival is a 1 ½ month long celebration that usually starts mid-April to the end of May. It is a festival that features the moss phlox flower with Mount Fuji in the background. There are over 800,000 moss phlox (shibazakura) planted throughout the area. The venue used is three kilometers away from Lake Motosuko, which is part of the Fuji Five Lakes. There are five varieties of moss phlox, which are Scarlet Flame, Autumn Rose, McDaniels Cushion, Tama no Nagare, and Little Dot. Amongst the pink fields there is a mound that is meant to be the shibazakura version of Mount Fuji. Once entering the park you will be taken flooded with an amazing field of shibazakura. The Panorama Footbath allows you to enjoy great views of the field while soaking your feet in hot water. The Fujiyama Sweets pop-up café is a place where you can see the field with Mount Fuji in the background while having some drinks and pastries on the viewing deck. If the café is not what you are craving then there is the Mount Fuji Gourmet Festival, which is run onsite. Here they have a wide variety of food stalls for you to choose from to satisfy your hunger. After taking your fair share of photos you can pay for a commemorative photo to add another memory. There is also a pop up post office where you can get a commemorative stamp or send a postcard with the exclusive mark to whoever you want. Of course there is a souvenir shop in the Fuji Shibazakura Festival that has limited special items like cherry blossom flavored goods. It is also the place to buy your very own shibazakura plant that you can take home with you. In the souvenir shop there are more goods available that is limited to only the Fuji Shibazakura Festival so it is best to not miss out on the opportunity. Please see below for tours that include Fuji Shibazakura Festival:

What our customers say
4.9 stars based on 525 REVIEWS
Ms. Miharu was great and also our bus driver (bus #81) for driving us to our destinations safe everyday. Miharu is very knowledgeable and comical, we really enjoyed her company and knowledge.
I cannot rave enough about this tour. Miharu and Joyce (subbed for 2 days) were our top notch hard working guides. I appreciate the history and interesting side stories were communicated on the bus, so at most locations we were able to explore on our own. The hotels, meals and coach were very comfortable & enjoyable. Everything was ready and prepared when the group arrived. The itinerary is well paced and full so you get your money's worth. The sushi making, Ninja throwing and Maiko tea ceremony & performance were so much fun and a compliment to just sight seeing. This was a very memorable trip with a great group of fellow travelers. All in all, a very well organized tour and I would not hesitate to book another with AJT.
One of our many highlights from this trip was our amazing tour guide, Ito. He went above and beyond immersing us into his amazing culture and making our experience unforgettable. We learned a lot from him and really appreciated his willingness to educate. He was flexible but also very organized, he made the experience hassle free. Overall, the tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for this meaningful journey.
We had a great tour guide (Miharu). Very sweet and knowledgeable she gave us alot of history but also insight into Japanese culture. It was an amazing experience with so many different places and activities.
The best decision we made was to book a tour through AJT. Our guide, Miharu, did an excellent job and provided information and history before we arrived at each stop on our tour. She kept the itinerary focused and gave us just enough time at each location to get a taste of it. We cannot wait to return to Japan and visit some new places.
