I chanced upon an old Emirati man brewing gahwa, traditional Arabic coffee, in his shop. With a welcoming smile, he offered me a cup. The rich, cardamom-infused coffee was unlike anything I’d tasted before — it was a flavor of history, culture, and the warm hospitality Dubai is known for.

Perhaps one of the most memorable experiences I had in Dubai was a desert safari. The journey started late in the afternoon, our 4×4 deftly maneuvering the dunes, the cityscape replaced by an endless expanse of golden sands – it was my first taste of dune bashing, and the adrenaline rush was absolutely exhilarating!

But the true magic began after sundown. As the sun sank, staining the sky with shades of crimson and gold, we were led to a traditional Bedouin camp. Set under a sky lit with a million stars, it was like stepping into a different world. The warm, inviting glow of the bonfire, the aromatic smell of BBQ, the soft melodies of Arabic music filling the air – it was enchanting.

I decided to try sandboarding, it was a fun, unique challenge! After working up an appetite, I joined others around the buffet, loaded with traditional Emirati dishes, the taste of succulent grilled meats, and the refreshing sweetness of Arabian dates still lingers in my memory.

And then there was the Tanoura dance. As the dancer twirled in his colorful skirt, telling stories through his movements, I felt myself getting lost in the rhythm, the culture, the beauty of it all. As the evening wound down with a session of star-gazing, I remember feeling a sense of calm and contentment.

The desert safari wasn’t just a tour, it was a journey, a captivating tale of Dubai’s past and present, and an experience that touched my soul.

It is kind of a pun, since the average scorching-hot temps of summer months have not yet receded in the beginning of September, and the added high humidity levels do a good job of amplifying the feeling of entering a sauna every time you go outside.

• Is September still hot in Dubai? Yes, and objectively so: The usual day temperatures are fluctuating somewhere around +38°C / 101°F.

Of course, it’s way more tolerable than the temperatures of the three months preceding September. Summer months in Dubai can only be described as hell on Earth, where no living being can survive a walk in a not air-conditioned area.

How hot is Dubai on a run-of-the-mill September night? When the sun finally settles behind the horizon, both UAE residents and Emirate visitors start to show their noses from their climate-controlled dwellings and the city comes back to life. For people who are bad with numbers: Imagine you’re swimming in your morning cup of coffee. It’s also the most famous emirate (despite not being the actual capital of the UAE), and its accolades are commonly known in every part of the world. Can you imagine that just a century ago, the city was a mere fishing village with population of no more than a few hundred people?

Now Dubai is a hub of glitz and glamour (just watch a couple of episodes of The Real Housewives of Dubai to get the full scope of lavish lifestyles the well-to-do emirate residents practice and preach), as well as a scientific forefront of all the latest discoveries happening in areas ranging from space exploration to microbiology.

Visiting Dubai in September seems like a great opportunity to combine city-style vacation (hitting the clubs, Michelin-star restaurants, and shopping till you drop) with a beach getaway. And let us tell you, beaches in Dubai are something else entirely! • Sharjah and Ajman

Located just an hour away from Dubai, these two emirates feel like an entirely different world.

They sport more spacious beaches with a lot fewer people. Hotels here are less expensive, but still uphold a level of luxury service. The majority of the hotels are very kid-friendly, providing ample entertainment and food options for little ones. Because of that, we advise you to look into booking your vacation in a resort inside either Sharjah or Ajman if you’re traveling with children. Or if you just want to getaway somewhere that’s quiet, peaceful, and far away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai.

If local tourist attractions might seem too dull for you, you can always get one of the many tours that will take you to either Dubai or Abu Dhabi’s best locations in record time. Yet before do not forget to check out a couple of new places like Rain Room installation and House of Wisdom (which is a library and museum) in Sharjah and to kayak at Ajman’s Al Zorah Nature Reserve to see pink flamingoes!

Most of the people staying at either Sharjah or Ajman claim that their vacations’ vibes are very chill, leaving them feeling like they’re miles away from civilization. While it’s true that these emirates carry more of a historic allure, when compared to the bigger UAE cities, they’re not in any way recluses of the modern world. Truth be told, any city will feel outdated and regressing into the past when compared to Dubai. Have you seen its Museum of the Future ?

• Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost emirate out of all the UAE. Its inherent flair is most closely related to that of Turkey’s all-inclusive resorts.

The emirate is great for people who love to be dropped off at a resort and then picked up only when the time is up. Resorts here can be compared to small cities, where you can find anything you could possibly need while on vacation.

Despite the fact that there’s not much to see and experience outside resort limits, it’s what’s inside that counts: Pearly white sand beaches, crystal clear water (pretty shallow by the shoreline, great for kids), top-notch dining options, and overall luxurious accommodations. Lots of well-to-do clans choose Ras Al Khaimah resorts for their family vacations, as the plentiful children entertainment options and fun animators can guarantee the parents a relaxing time away from their usual duties.

Ras Al Khaimah in September means starting the day early with a tanning session, followed by a swim, and a couple of mimosas (as this part of the Emirates is totally okay with alcohol consumption).

Abu Dhabi is a capital of the United Arab Emirates in every sense of the word: Culturally (that’s where the sister-museum of the Louvre stands), historically, and economically.

Tourists usually come here to expand their knowledge of the Emirates and to seek the thrill of many adventures the city has to offer. Abu Dhabi is where the ultra-modern city skyline is mixed with lush oases of greenery; where the wonderfully preserved Arabic architecture, in all its pompous glory, co-exists with crazy-looking giant attractions of theme parks. Pay a visit to the Ferrari World to see the impressive distinction of adventure and the neighboring historical sites.

Beach vacation here is not a priority, and the local beaches aren’t as impressive and infrastructurally developed as those of Dubai. Still, in the evenings, the Corniche waterfront promenade is where life happens in Abu Dhabi. Go out there and watch the best-dressed and unbelievably rich people stroll along the shoreline in their iconic luxury brand ensembles. Ah, the joy and envy of people-watching!

Fujairah is as different from the other emirates on our list as the usual Instagram post is from reality, but not in a bad way!

Geographically, it’s the only emirate that faces the Gulf of Oman and not the Persian Gulf, creating a much milder climate. The surrounding mountains contribute greatly to the weather abnormalities of the region, and you can feel it right away. Fujairah is usually a few degrees colder than Dubai, for example.

The emirate is for people who are tired of the pretentiousness that exudes from other Arabic megapolises: In Fujairah, skyscrapers give way to mountains, and luxury shopping to snorkeling by the reef together with brightly-colored fishies.

Most of the resorts here are all-inclusive, which is a good thing, since there’s nothing much to do outside their limits. Fujairah is not as crowded as the other emirates, but not for the lack of nice experiences, — the location of the emirate is a tricky one. It sits off the beaten track, and the journey here, while not impossible, is longer than to other emirates. In our opinion, it’s a good thing, since those who cover the distance are rewarded with almost untouched nature and locals who aren’t yet looking to take advantage of the naïve tourists.

Each emirate has something that will make you want to spend your September vacation inside its limits (or explore the neighboring cities on day trips), so, ultimately, to each their own. You decide whether you want to stroll around Abu Dhabi’s museums, go on a shopping spree in one of the Dubai malls, or hunker down in one of the luxurious resorts of Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah (choosing the one based on the quantity of children activities or the climate and time spend on the road).

In the evenings, go down to the restaurant and enjoy the delectable meals accompanied with soul-touching live music; or, if you want a little more action, — head to the bar, grab a drink, and join a party! Leave at least one day to explore the neighboring historical Al Fahidi district, famous for being home to Al Shindagha Museum , which was definitely a highlight of our latest trip to Dubai! • 5* Park Hyatt Dubai — the ultimate indulgence of any traveler, this hotel has everything: Lush green territory filled to the brim with colorful flowerbeds and made alive by birdsong, a huge lagoon with an artificial, yet outstandingly delightful white sand beach, a golf course, and an attentive personnel. Yes, this hotel is among the top luxury Dubai hotels, and it (literally) comes at a hefty price. And yet, the level of service and attention to the smallest details that make your stay a relaxing getaway in the middle of the city’s hustle and bustle are worth every penny, in our opinion. If you (God forbid) don’t have a clue where to start experiencing the lavish lifestyle as the Park Hyatt’s guest, we’ve got you covered: Go down to the lagoon and watch the sunset, and then, as the weather gets a little chilly (by Dubai’s September standards), head over to a lounge by an open fire. Ah, the dream! One can easily spend an entire month like this. Cheapest room: $1600/week stay

Must-do UAE experiences in September

As we’ve managed to establish above, Dubai’s September weather, especially the late part of the month, caters not only to laying on the beach, but also to exploring the city on foot. Personally, we managed to walk at least 10k steps a day, continuously discovering hidden gems of this city.

Visiting Dubai in September, even the first half of the month, seems like a good idea because, unlike other emirates, it’s not all about beach-style vacations. There are so many places to visit in Dubai, and, thankfully, most of them have air-conditioning.

Dubai is a multifaceted place, where history and innovation are so closely intertwined that one cannot exist without the other. Keeping this in mind, here’s our list of must-visit places one should consider exploring when in Dubai:

• Burj Khalifa — the world’s tallest building draws hundreds of tourists each day to its viewing decks for a chance to see the emirate from above. A few of the floors, namely 124, 125, and 148, are open to the public for $42, depending on the website you use to purchase them. And let us tell you: The price could be higher for the awe-striking 360-degree view of Dubai that opens up from the decks. This activity isn’t for people who suffer from vertigo: The city looks more like an anthill when you look at it from above (through glass floors, no less!), which adds a degree of unease to the whole experience. Pro tip: To get the best view of the tower itself, head on over to the rooftop of the Burj Club, which gives you spectacular vantage point of both the Tower and the Dubai Fountain. Relax by the pool, or, if your visit coincides with a Saturday morning, stay for a BBQ brunch — an experience sought-after by Dubai residents (this should tell you a lot about the impeccable quality of both food and service).

• The Dubai Fountain’s evening show is a sight you cannot miss: Being the world’s tallest performing fountain (now you get why Dubai is sometimes called the city of superlatives?), the sight of water splatters “dancing” to the music, changing colors, and generally hypnotizing the heck out of the onlookers, is the one for the books! The shows are on every evening, and they’re free (!). The performance starts at 6 p.m. and plays every half an hour until 11 p.m.
• Desert Safari — taking a jeep out on a desert safari in Dubai is an Arabic equivalent of getting on a scary-looking roller coaster, as the adrenaline you get from literally jumping over dunes in trucks is on par with that of a ride in a theme park, if not stronger. Pro tip: Choose the tours that fall on the second part of the day, so that you can watch the sunset in the desert and even walk on a slowly cooling sand without the fear of burning your feet. Depending on the added activities, be it camel rides or lunch, the prices differ greatly. Plan on spending at least $35 per person.

• Palm Jumeirah — one of the many artificially created islands by the coast of Dubai (don’t confuse it with its younger (and bigger) sister — Palm Jebel Ali — which is still under construction), Palm Jumeirah is a must-see place when you come to Dubai. You can actually walk around the island for free, which is a great thing for a traveler on a budget. Pro tip: To get the best view of the Palm, head up the Palm Tower, where an observation deck named quite predictably — The View at the Palm — sports spectacular 360 degree panoramas of the island, the water, and Dubai’s skyline. The view, in our humble opinion, is better than that from Burj Khalifa! The deck is located on the 52d floor, but if you want, you can have a more bone-chillingly extreme experience: Skydive over the Palm with a parachute. Can you imagine the cool pics and videos you’ll get out of the experience? Get on it if you want to get the reputation of a daredevil! The ordinary entry ticket to The View of the Palm starts at $20, which is a steal considered the pure spectacle of looking at the fascinating structures both on and surrounding the island.

• Aquariums — perfect for families with children, or just for adults who like to relax while looking at the fish (we don’t judge!). There are a few places to catch Zen energy when met with marine creatures, but the most notable is (of course) one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world — Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo . Located inside the Dubai Mall (every shopaholic’s dream, since there are more than 1200 shops!), it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions of the emirate. Pro tip: There are many experiences you can get inside the Aquarium, the most worth it, in our opinion, are a visit to the Penguin Cave, a glass-bottom boat tour, and a King Croc sighting. Another cool place to see the fish and other sea animals is the Lost Chambers Aquarium , located at the Atlantis , the Palm. The whole space is done in a style of a long-lost city of Atlantis, which adds a nice twist to the whole experience. Both of the aquariums’ entry tickets are not absurdly priced: You will pay around $30–$40 for a standard experience. Plus, hiding out in an air-conditioned, dimly lit spaces when the sun is at its highest outside is a great tip to enjoy your trip to Dubai in September.
• Museum of the Future — one of the newer tourist attractions of Dubai that has managed to get the world’s attention long before it opened: The Museum of the Future is one of the most daring architectural experiments that the UAE have undertaken in recent years. Unique in shape and design, the space isn’t just nice to look at: It’s what’s on the inside that’s even more impressive. Basically, you can look into the future of the world (namely, its state in the year 2071): Each component, be it space exploration, robotization, artificial intelligence, or preserving of the species, is mind-blowing, to say the least. Pro tip: Make sure to book the tickets a month or so in advance, as demand is always at its all-time high, even in September. General entry to the museum is $40 per person.

• Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi — given the close proximity of Dubai to Abu Dhabi, you can easily book a day trip to the capital of the UAE. The cherry on top of the tour is a visit to the pearly-white Sheikh Zayed Mosque , one of the rare instances when non-Muslims can enter the mosque’s premises. The building looks like something out of The Thousand and One Nights : No pictures, even professional ones, can do the mosque justice, as it’s simply too beautiful to be captured. Pro tip: Be mindful of your outfit choices, and try to respect the religious beliefs of the locals. Don’t wear anything too revealing (this applies to both men and women, by the way), and bring a scarf to cover the head upon entering the mosque (this part is ladies-only). Day trips from Dubai to Abu Dhabi range greatly, but the basic tour that gets you inside Sheikh Zayed Mosque will cost you around $70.
• Ain Dubai — the world’s tallest Ferris wheel, this tourist attraction is best looked at from one of Dubai’s beaches: Marina Beach being the prime spot to get a look at this giant beauty in its full glory. One ride takes about 40 minutes to complete, that’s how ginormous the wheel is. Surprisingly, it’s not a super scary experience: The pods have windows, the wheel turns extremely slow, and the 360-degree views of the iconic sail-shaped Burj Al Arab Hotel, the Palm Jumeirah, Burj Kalifa and other prominent Dubai structures will make you forget about the actual heights the ride takes you to. Pro tip: Unfortunately, Ain Dubai has been closed for maintenance since March 2022. However, the structure itself is impressive, so at least you can enjoy its view from afar.
• Dubai Miracle Garden — world’s largest natural flower garden and the ultimate family outing destination. Is Dubai Miracle Garden open in September? Unfortunately, the garden operates mainly during winter months, when cooler temperatures make more than 150 million flowers go into full bloom. However, we just couldn’t resist mentioning this attraction, as the sheer amount of beauty presented here can blow your socks off. Last year, the attraction opened at the end of October, but each year is different. Keep a close watch of the garden’s official website to stay up-to-date with the changes of the schedule and exciting new announcements.

Truthfully, there are countless of entertainment options and places of historical significance peppered all around Dubai. It’s really hard to list them all (especially with the astronomical rate the emirate creates new spaces and structures), but if it’s your first time in Dubai, you’ll be set by visiting the spots we’ve mentioned above.

Before getting into the ordinary, non-religious or national-oriented events, let’s figure out whether there are any Dubai holidays in September. Turns out, there is a major holiday that celebrates the birthday of Muhammad, which is very important for people practicing Islam. In 2024, Mawlid (the actual name of the holiday) is celebrated on the 15th of September. Muslims spend this holy day fasting and reading the Quran, meaning there are virtually no celebrations, only quiet observations. Know these facts and act accordingly!

As for the concerts in Dubai in September 2024, we haven’t yet found any household names that will tour in the UAE during this month (Macklemore is set to play his concert on October 4th). It doesn’t mean that international artists don’t include the UAE in their world tours: In 2023, for example, the Emirates welcomed such artists as Guns N’ Roses , Demi Lovato , The Backstreet Boys , Travis Scott , Bryan Adams , and many others. Keep your eyes peeled, maybe your faves will decide to pay a visit to Dubai in September after all!

Unfortunately, if you’re a huge sports fan, you’ll be disappointed to learn that due to high temperatures that are still present in September, sports events here are not held during this month. Set your sights on traveling to Dubai in March, since the world-renowned Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships , or simply Dubai Open, usually falls on the tail end of February – beginning of March.

Plus, for all of you auto racing enthusiasts, keep in mind that F1 2024 is predicted to have its 25th round in late November /early December in Yas Marina , Abu Dhabi. Just sayin’!

Prices in Dubai in September

Tourists are known to show super-human abilities, being more than able to withstand harsh environments if it means they do so at a profit. So, bargain-oriented travelers are starting to flock to Dubai as early as the beginning of September.

Even though the first half of the month is, as a rule of thumb, cheaper; try to plan your vacation on the second part of September. While it’s true that there are more people out on the streets, but the number of tourists is nowhere close to that of high season. Plus, the weather is much more bearable, meaning you can enjoy early morning tanning sessions and evening long walks through the bustling megapolis streets.

While Dubai-in-September’s main topic of discussion is the weather, it doesn’t mean that tourists have magically forgotten about their most feared topic: Prices. Ultimately, traveling to the UAE in September of 2024 is not for the faint-hearted. If you tolerate heat well, however, then you’ll get the best of both worlds: Mostly empty beaches and low-season hotel prices (with the level of service so high it reaches the top of Burj Khalifa).

Whether you want a beach holiday or a strictly shopping tour of the emirate, don’t forget about the importance of SPF. While arguably not being the best time to visit Dubai , September should still be on the table when planning your vacation to the UAE. As for the pros and cons of this decision (and just general for and against points), here are a few we could think of:

+ Plenty of (air-conditioned) entertainment options

+ Virtually certified positive answer to the question “Is Dubai safe to travel?”

+ Continuous development of infrastructure, people-oriented establishments, luxury everywhere you look… And have we mentioned air conditioners yet?

— Travel prices have gone up significantly in recent years

— Cannot yet spend the entire day on the beach in fear of getting either a sunburn or a heatstroke, forcing you to plan around the sun position in the sky

— The heat, paired with high humidity levels, might be too much for travelers with certain health conditions (or crazy hair, have you seen that Friends episode when Monica’s hair gets super frizzy?)

— The water might seem too hot for some people, making them opt out of beach time in favor of refreshing hotel pools

Traveling to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the first time  and not sure where to start? Indeed, planning a trip to Dubai might be overwhelming, even more so if this is your first time in this rapidly growing and continuously changing city!

When is the best time to visit? How much time do you need in Dubai? What are the best areas to stay in and how to travel around? Do you need to pre-book tickets or can you just go with the flow? How to save time and money and still see the best that Dubai has to offer?

Dubai is a city of contrasts, a place where modern extravagance and traditional values go hand in hand. From its towering skyscrapers to its pristine beaches and bustling souks, visiting Dubai is like stepping into a different world…

To help you plan your first trip to this dynamic and unique city, in this guide we share some of our top travel tips for visiting Dubai .

We have visited Dubai several times and all the information and tips in this article are based on our personal experience. Some of these tricks we only learned after several trips…

This practical guide includes all the info I wish we had known before planning a trip to Dubai. These tips will not only help you plan your trip, but will also show you how to make the best of your visit, time, and budget. Find out!

Here are our top travel tips for visiting Dubai:

1. Avoid Traveling in Summer

Dubai is known for its scorching temperatures, especially during the summer months. To give you an idea, average daytime temperatures during June, July, and August are well over 40°C (104°F). Even in April or November, Dubai temperatures usually still exceed 30°C (86°F).

The best time to visit Dubai is during the winter months – between December and February. The daytime temperatures at this time of the year are usually around 25°C (77°F). So it’s still warm enough to enjoy beaches, pools, and waterparks, but the temperatures are also pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Good to know: Winter is also the peak tourist season in Dubai. So expect accommodation prices to be higher and more crowds at the main attractions. However, with some advance planning and preparation, you can still have a very enjoyable visit, more than in the summer.

The shoulder season – the months of March-April or October-November – can be a good time to visit Dubai as well. If you don’t mind temperatures of around 30-35°C (86-95°F), you can take advantage of somewhat lower prices and fewer crowds than in the winter.

In addition, you may want to check when Ramadan is. During this month, most Muslims do not eat from sunrise to sunset, so many restaurants will be closed during the day. This may might impact your experience, depending on the places you visit.

TIP: No matter when you visit Dubai, be prepared for the heat by wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, using sun protection, and staying hydrated. Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak heat.

2. Book Attraction Tickets in Advance

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a trip to Dubai is not to plan/book attraction tickets in advance.

Booking in advance means more time slots to choose from, better prices, and less time wasted queuing.  After all, you want to make the most of your trip to Dubai and not spend all your precious time standing in lines.

Good to know: Tickets to many popular attractions in Dubai are often sold out at least a few days in advance. Furthermore, many tickets are cheaper if booked online. In addition, some attraction tickets, e.g. Atlantis Aquaventure , cost less if you book at least a week before your visit.

For some places, not reserving in advance means that you won’t be able to visit at all.  For example, the Museum of the Future is so popular that all tickets are usually sold out at least 2-3 weeks upfront. If you want to be able to choose the time slot that fits you best, you need to book at least a month in advance.

If you want to visit observation decks at Burj Khalifa or Dubai Frame , you also need to book ahead. In most cases, a few days in advance is sufficient, but it really depends on the period when you travel and how flexible you are. Also, consider visiting these attractions early in the morning or late in the evening for smaller crowds and better photo opportunities.

PRO TIP: For Burj Khalifa, we recommend getting a ticket that includes Level 148 . Not only you get to visit another level which is not included with standard tickets, but you also get skip-the-line access through the security check and at the elevators, and it includes some snacks and drinks. It’s well worth it.

Overall, we always recommend booking tickets and tours at least a month before your trip. But keep in mind that for many popular destinations worldwide booking a month or even two upfront is not sufficient anymore.

Good to know: Booking tickets/tours via websites like GetYourGuide , Viator , or Tiqets also saves you money on exchange rates. Whereas if you pay on the spot, it will usually cost you quite a lot more (not only because many tickets are more expensive at the counter, but also because of credit card fees, exchange rate deviations, etc.).

Plus, booking and paying ahead makes it easier to budget for your vacation and keep your credit card’s spending limit available for other expenses during your trip.

3. Foresee Enough Time & Plan Wisely

There is one thing that you may not realize as a first-time visitor to Dubai and that’s how huge the city is. It’s not a place that you can compare to cities like Rome or London , or even New York City where you can still walk between many attractions and see a lot in a short time…

Dubai is totally different! It’s big, not really walkable (except in some areas), and the attractions are spread out all over the enormous and ever-growing city.

Plus, road works and traffic jams turn every ride into an expedition. The same trip that takes 20 minutes at night or early in the morning can take you an hour or even longer during the day. And yes, public transport can be a good option, but it also has its limitations – more about it further below.

Good to know: When planning your sightseeing itinerary, you will see that most Dubai attractions work with timed entry slots. Be sure to foresee plenty of extra time everywhere though! Even with timed entry tickets, you will often be standing in line for an hour or even longer, not to mention the time that it takes to actually visit the place or get from one attraction to the other.

TIP: So while planning what to see and do, foresee enough extra time between the sights and don’t try to do too much in a single day. Also, group the attractions based on their location, and go for a mix of top attractions with some lesser-known ones. That way, you don’t have to rush from one queue to another and your trip will be much more relaxed.

This brings us to the next tip – see below.

4. Don’t Try to See Everything

There is so much to see and do in Dubai that you could easily stay here for a few months and still not experience everything the area has to offer. So resist FOMO and the urge of having to see ‘everything’. It’s simply impossible, especially if you are only traveling to Dubai for just a few days or a week.

TIP: Choose a few places, attractions, and experiences that interest you the most and focus on those rather than ticking off boxes just because some guidebook told you that one or the other place is ‘a must’.

If you absolutely want to go to the top of Burj Khalifa, well – just do it and tick it off your bucket list. After all, how often will you get a chance to visit the world’s tallest building… In that case, book tickets in advance and be prepared to queue, or save time and avoid the crowds with priority access .

On the other hand, maybe you are perfectly content just seeing the building from the outside and rather spend your time visiting other viewing platforms like Sky Views , the View at The Palm , or Dubai Frame …

Or maybe you don’t care about any of these at all and much rather spend a day at a water park , exploring the old town souks (markets), or enjoying the views from a luxury yacht …

Dubai has so much to offer to all types of travelers. So personalize your itinerary based on what you really want to do, taking into account the time that you have, your interests, and your budget. If you are visiting Dubai with the family, try to incorporate some fun activities for the kids in your itinerary as well, even if it means that you’ll have less time for sightseeing.

5. Consider Tours & Private Drivers

If you want to see a lot of Dubai in a short time or you don’t know where to even start deciding where to go, consider booking tours or private guides/drivers .

Sometimes, a private driver can also be cheaper than taking a taxi between all those places, and often, you can also find cars that can take up to 6 passengers (vs 4 in most taxis).

Just to be clear, I am talking about quickly seeing multiple places all over the city in a single day. If you want to spend more time exploring the sites, you better go on your own.

There are tons of different ‘city highlights’ tours that bring you to many of the main landmarks of Dubai in (half) a day. Keep in mind that in most cases, your ‘visit’ will be just a quick photo stop, so it’s not comparable to actually visiting the sights. But it’s a good way to get an introduction to Dubai and catch a glimpse of the top spots.

PRO TIP: If you do a city highlights tour, do it at the beginning of your trip! That way, you can later come back to some of the places that you like the most. An ideal way to explore Dubai is to take an introductory city tour first as you arrive and then thoroughly visiting some of the main landmarks and attractions on your own later.

6. Save Time & Money with Combination Tickets

Dubai is expensive, there is no arguing about it. But with some smart planning, you can save some money on some of the main attractions.

One of the best ways to do this is by opting for combination tickets and/or city cards that include several popular places.

Here are some of the most popular deals:

• Burj Khalifa + Dubai Aquarium (+-$20 savings per person).
• Atlantis Aquaventure + Lost Chambers Aquarium (+-$25-30 savings per person).
• GoCity Explorer Pass (up to 50% savings, depending on the attractions you visit).

Good to know: Some tickets cost more during the most popular times. For example, Burj Khalifa around sunset. So if you want to save money, be sure to check prices for different time slots/days when making reservations.

7. Stay Longer

You might be wondering how much time you need to see the best of Dubai. Well, there is really no straightforward answer to this and so much depends on your interests.

That being said, I recommend planning at least a week for a first visit to Dubai. But if you have time and your budget allows it, stay longer. You won’t get bored!

With a week in Dubai, you will be able to visit most of the top landmarks, explore several different parts of the city, and also find some time to relax and unwind. If you want to spend more time at the beach or by the pool, visit a water park or a theme park with your kids, or make a day trip to Abu Dhabi, ideally, you plan at least 10-12 days for Dubai.

8. Choose the Location of Your Hotel Wisely

Deciding where to stay in Dubai might not be as straightforward as you may think, especially if the main purpose of your visit is to explore the city.

There is not one perfect place to stay in Dubai – it’s simply much too big and too spread out for that.

However, some areas are better than others and some are really a disaster for commute. If you pick the wrong location, you might be stuck in traffic for hours every time you want to go anywhere and do some sightseeing. On the other hand, that same spot might be perfect for those who are mainly interested in swimming and dining, and are just looking for a relaxing vacation with maybe one or two excursions that include a pick-up and drop-off at the hotel…

TIP: I strongly recommend that you look at the map and the location of the places that you want to visit before deciding where to stay in Dubai. Also, consider how you will travel around.

For example, staying within walking distance of a metro station might save you a lot of time and money on commuting if you plan to do lots of sightseeing. Whereas staying in a nice walkable area with lots of shops and restaurants will be ideal if you like to go out at night.

Sofitel Dubai Downtown is a great choice in this area, close to Dubai Mall and just near a metro station. Remember, however, that this is the heart of the city, so very busy and far from the sea.
• Dubai Marina in the south of the city is another popular area to stay in Dubai. It’s a great choice for those who are looking for a more relaxing vacation, boat trips, water parks, dining, shopping, etc. The beach is not too far from here, however, it will take at least 45-60 minutes to reach the city center. Millennium Place is a very popular hotel not too far from the main Marina area and close to the metro. On a somewhat higher budget, JW Marriott Hotel Marina is a wonderful choice if you want to be in the heart of the Marina.

TIP: On our most recent visit to Dubai, we stayed at Rove La Mer Beach Hotel . It’s close to the downtown area, so quite convenient for sightseeing, but also with direct access to a private beach – the best of both worlds. We loved this hip modern hotel, also because it’s much smaller and more intimate – a kind of place where you don’t have to worry about losing your kids at breakfast. It also offers great price/quality for Dubai. The only downside is that the area around the hotel is still developing with lots of construction going on, but it will only get more attractive in the future.

9. Beware of Tourism Taxes

Hotel stays (including hotel apartments, guesthouses, holiday homes, etc.) in the United Arab Emirates are taxed with various fees, surcharges, and taxes. These amounts might vary depending on the hotel, but it’s not abnormal that these taxes add over 20-25% to your room rate.

For example, our recent hotel invoice in Dubai showed a 10% service charge, 7% municipality fees, 5 % VAT, and an additional 10 AED (+-$3) Tourism Dirham Fee per night.

Altogether, we paid about 24,4% on top of the official room rate. The good thing is that we knew in advance how much we had to pay. Otherwise, this could be a very unpleasant surprise…

So when looking for accommodation in Dubai and comparing prices, make sure that you are actually comparing the same thing!

Many hotel websites show prices without (some/any) taxes, so you may think that booking directly with them is cheaper. Often, it’s not the case at all!

TIP: We always use Booking.com for our accommodation bookings, also in Dubai. With them, you see the total price, including all fees and taxes, so you know exactly how much you will spend. (Depending on booking conditions, you may have to prepay for the stay in advance whereas the taxes are charged separately when you arrive at the hotel, but the total amount you see when making a reservation is correct).

10. Use Public Transport & Local Taxis

Dubai’s public transport system is efficient and inexpensive. Depending on where you are staying and traveling to, it might be very convenient to use the Dubai Metro, Tram, Monorail, or even local buses.

However, this depends on the exact trip you are planning to make and also on the size of your group. Sometimes, public transport is the best way to get around the city quickly and affordably. But there are also many situations when it’s a real hassle and doesn’t make your trip faster or much cheaper.

In those cases, you will be glad to know that taxis are rather affordable in Dubai . The most expensive taxi ride we recently took in Dubai was 25 kilometers, it took over 50 minutes, and it cost us 76 AED (+-$21).

However, be careful that you only use official taxis! Because e.g. Uber is often quite a lot more expensive. Not even to mention that they sometimes charge twice the price during peak times of increased demand. We learned this the hard way, after taking a few overpriced Uber rides…

Also, unlike in many other countries where we use Uber all the time, in Dubai, you never really know how much you will pay until the end of the ride. The price you see in the beginning is usually just an approximate indication.

TIP: Install Careem app on your smartphone and use it to request ‘Hala Taxi’. That’s the best way to get an official taxi in Dubai. If you request ‘Rides’, it works similar as Uber and is more expensive. We learned this from a local taxi driver after a few very unpleasant experiences with Uber and private drivers randomly offering their services at the main tourist spots, and it saved us a fortune.

To give you an idea, we were quoted 120 AED ($33) by Uber and 150 AED ($40) by random ‘kind strangers’ for a ride that in the end cost us 22 AED ($6) by official taxi. When it comes to busy times and popular tourist hotspots, getting a taxi ride in Dubai can feel like navigating the Wild West…

11. Start Your Days Early

One of the best ways to make the most out of your trip to Dubai is to start your days early.

There’s much less traffic in the morning, so you can get everywhere much quicker. But the main advantage is that there are hardly any other people, even at the most popular attractions. In addition – if you are visiting Dubai in the warmest months – getting up early is the best way to avoid the biggest heat.

Good to know: Be sure to check opening times of the places you want to visit. While some attractions don’t open until noon, many others are open from 9-10 AM. There are also places – like e.g. Burj Khalifa – that you can visit at 7 AM, and on some days even earlier if you like…

For example, we recently went to the Aquaventure Water Park at Atlantis around opening time. There were no lines at the entrance and we could also do many popular slides without any wait. A few hours later, people were queuing for 45-60 minutes at the same rides…

In addition, the taxi ride to get there in the morning took us just 22 minutes. That same ride to get back to our hotel in the evening was over 50 minutes, not counting more than 10 minutes for a taxi to arrive… So yes, it really pays to explore Dubai in the morning!

12. Stay Connected

While pretty much all public places and tourist attractions in Dubai offer free Wi-Fi, we highly recommend getting a local SIM card for your visit to UAE. There are so many situations when it’s just much easier to stay connected. For example, if you need to book a taxi ride, or book some tickets on the go, etc.

Depending on your data plan, roaming can cost a fortune in Dubai. My provider sent me an sms saying that using data in UAE will cost me 15 euros per megabyte (ouch! and no, thank you!). So the first thing I did after landing in Dubai was disconnect roaming.

There are several ways to approach this:

• Pocket Wi-Fi. One of the easiest ways to stay connected on the go is by renting a pocket WiFi at Dubai airport . This is a very convenient option if you don’t want to change anything on your phone. It’s also convenient if you are traveling with a family/friends since you can connect up to 10 devices to it.
• Local SIM card. Alternatively, you can opt opt for a physical SIM card, which is also available at the airport . With this option, you will need to place this card into your phone. If you want to keep your ‘own’ phone number working as well, see if your phone has a dual SIM option – then you can use both. Otherwise, you may want to bring an old phone to use with this local card.
• eSIM. There are many providers available (just search online), but what’s included and the prices vary a lot. Depending on which one you choose and also on your device, this can be a very easy and simple process, but it’s also not very straightforward if you have never done it before. Also, not all phones allow eSIM – so be sure to double-check if your smartphone has this capability.

13. Respect Local Culture

While Dubai is a very cosmopolitan city, it’s also a place with different cultural norms and traditions. Overall, UAE is very ‘Western’ and Dubai in particular is very laid back and relaxed. With over 200 nationalities living in Dubai, it’s a true melting pot of different cultures. Still, remember that you are a visitor here, and be respectful.

Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or public places. Also, avoid public displays of affection, as these can be considered disrespectful.

If you’re visiting during Ramadan, be mindful of local customs and traditions. Keep in mind that many traditional restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day but will come to life after sunset. If you are visiting during Ramadan and are planning sightseeing during the day or a day trip to e.g. Abu Dhabi, it’s advisable to pack your own lunch.

One of the most common questions we get is what to wear when traveling to Dubai. Well, you will see people wearing all kinds of clothing – from burkas that cover the entire body to revealing summer clothes that hardly cover much at all. However, while a lot is tolerated, it’s not always appreciated.

So when in doubt, remember that it’s always safer to cover your knees and shoulders. See-through clothing is also not the best idea, unless on a beach.

TIP: Wear loose light clothes – not as much for religious or cultural reasons, but also because of the heat. Long skirts/dresses or wide summer pants will be much more comfortable than tight clothes.

14. Use Credit Cards

The official currency in Dubai is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) and all the prices are displayed in this currency. All regular businesses accept cash and electronic means of payment, such as credit cards or smartphone payments.

We haven’t encountered a single place in Dubai that wouldn’t accept a credit card. So if you want to make it easy and simple for yourself, you don’t even need to exchange money and can simply use cards everywhere.

Important! Inform your bank about your visit so that they don’t block your cards for ‘suspicious activity’. And even then… Despite precautions, one of my cards got blocked by a credit card company after a random payment at a restaurant in one of the main malls in Dubai. We had to call the bank to get them to unblock it again and they say that this happens when ‘the systems’ suspect anything suspicious, despite us having notified our bank in advance…

If you want to leave a tip to someone or purchase something small, you may want to have some local currency at hand. In that case, you can get some cash from local ATMs which you will find in malls all over the city. I strongly encourage you to only use ATMs attached to local bank offices as some others might charge additional fees and/or give the worst exchange rates.

PRO TIP: When using ATMs to withdraw money or paying by card, you always get an option between local currency (AED) and your own currency. Always choose local currency (AED) – that way, your bank will do the exchange and you will always get a better rate than the one offered by ATMs or pay terminals.

Good to know: We heard it on quite a few occasions that money is king in Dubai and it doesn’t matter in which currency you want to pay – they will accept it. Indeed, this is the case at the markets (souks) and some smaller private businesses. On a recent trip to Dubai, I could use Euros at the souk. The sellers also told us that they accept credit cards (just make sure to haggle – see below).

15. Shop Smart

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise, but prices can vary a lot depending on where you shop. The prestigious locations like the Dubai Mall are home to some of the most expensive brands in the world and the prices here are usually very high. You will be able to find much better deals at the Dubai Outlet Mall, for example.

Also, if you go to various local markets (souks), be sure to shop around for better deals. Also, don’t forget to haggle – and not a little! Many sellers take advantage of tourists asking ridiculously high prices. Often, 3-4 times higher than what you should pay, and likely even more… Don’t be shy, offer the price that seems correct to you, and be prepared to walk away.

On a recent trip, I got intrigued by a perfume someone put on me while walking through the Dubai Spice Souk (this is common practice – people will (try to) put all kinds of stuff on you – from scarfs to perfumes etc.). So I asked how much it was. The prices depend on the size and the design of the bottle, they said, and so we settled on a medium-sized simple bottle and they told me it was 280 AED (+- 70 euros).

No way I would pay 70 euros for a tiny bottle of perfume at a market! And so we started the negotiations. In the end, I paid 20 euros in cash which – to me – felt like a correct price. The seller was telling me that this was way too low and he was only willing to do it because it was our last day in Dubai and my kids were cute… 😉

After that, I saw similar perfumes at Dubai Airport souvenir store and indeed, most of them were about 20-25 euros for about the same size I got. So don’t be afraid to negotiate and if you don’t feel comfortable with the price or the quality, simply walk away.

16. Explore Beyond the Glitz

While Dubai is best known for its skyscrapers and extravagant landmarks, don’t miss out on its cultural gems as well.

One of the best places to catch a glimpse of authentic culture is Old Dubai. Visit the historic Al Fahidi neighborhood, explore the spice and gold souks, and take a traditional abra ride along Dubai Creek. These experiences are also quite touristy, but they are also totally different from the main attractions in Dubai.

TIP: There are many excellent guided tours that visit Old Dubai . They all take you to the same area, do the traditional boat ride on Dubai Creek, and visit the same local markets. Most tours also include local coffee and dades, and some also food tasting. While you can just visit the area on your own, these tours are really affordable and give you a somewhat deeper insight and insider tips.

On our recent visit, we chose this walking/food tour . It started with some traditional food tasting at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to the old town, a boat ride, and ended at the gold and spice souks. A nice way to spend a few hours and get to know a different side of the city.

17. Avoid Weekends

If you think Dubai is busy on a weekday, try to imagine it on a weekend or on public holidays.

So if you can adjust your plans, avoid visiting the most popular attractions on weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday).

If you are in Dubai for more than a few days, this is really not difficult to do. Visit the most popular places such as Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Global Village , Miracle Garden , or theme parks and water parks on weekdays.

On weekends, you can do more relaxing activities such as a sightseeing a yacht trip , a speedboat tour , spend time at the beach or by the pool, go parasailing or jetskiing , or take a desert tour – see below.

18. Experience the Desert

No trip to Dubai would be complete without experiencing its desert. Book a desert safari tour for an adrenaline-pumping ride over the dunes, followed by a traditional Bedouin-style dinner under the stars. It’s an unforgettable experience!

There are many desert tour options , but when you look closely, they are very similar in what they offer. Depending on the option you book, you have one main activity – usually, dune bashing in a jeep, quad, or camel ride. Afterward, you spend time in a desert camp where you can partake in all kinds of different experiences.

Some of these experiences include taking pictures with falcons and camels, sandboarding, various shows (traditional dance, belly dance, fire show), henna tattoos, etc. There is always lots of local food and it’s surprisingly good.

Our experience: We have done two desert tours in Dubai (on different trips) and they were both very similar and both excellent. The first time we went on this dune safari tour and on a recent trip, we opted for this highly-rated tour that includes a longer camel ride . In both cases, the second part of the tour was quite similar, the main difference was that the first tour included an exhilarating jeep ride through the dunes, and the second one – a 45-minute camel ride.

The whole family really enjoyed these tours and I couldn’t say which one is better. All I can tell you is that it’s a nice experience that will make your trip to Dubai even more memorable.

19. Don’t Forget Little Important Details

Here are some additional travel tips for Dubai:

• Bring a reusable water bottle. Dubai is so warm and dry that you will want to carry a bottle of water on you at all times. If you want to minimize plastic waste, you may want to bring your own reusable water bottle. Tap water is, in general, safe to drink. In addition, you will also see free water taps at some public areas, where you can refill your bottles.
• Pack a travel adapter. UAE uses  Type G  plugs, same as in the UK. However, we noticed that in most hotels you can also simply use European plugs and sometimes a simple USB cable. Still, we always pack a Type G adapter just to be safe.
• Bring a power bank to charge your phone on the go. Also, carry extra batteries for your camera.
• Know that you are not obliged to tip, but it’s also appreciated. Many people tip 10-15% at the restaurants or give a small tip to tour guides. If you like to tip, make sure you have some small bills of local currency.
• Bring a small crossbody bag for sightseeing. At some landmarks, you will be asked to leave bigger bags/backpacks in a locker. I like Hedgren crossbody bags for travel – they are light, sturdy, and very durable. The one I have is big enough to hold my camera, a power bank, documents, and even two water bottles, and I was never asked to use a locker. But pack the smallest backpack and you’ll often have to leave it behind…
• Don’t forget sun protection. A sun hat, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses are a must when visiting Dubai!

Dubai gets hot in the summer. Really hot. We’re talking up to 50°C (122°F). But is it still worth planning a stopover or even a longer holiday in Dubai over the hot summer months?

Yes, it’s going to be sweaty hot, but it’s also a city built to deal with the extreme temperatures.  A summer stopover in Dubai may not be as unbearable as you think – let’s see what you can expect!

Dubai Summer Temperature – How Hot Does it Actually Get?

While summer averages are reported at 45°C (113°F), it is quite typical to experience daytime maximums up to 50°C (122°F). The hottest month of the year in Dubai is August .

When is summer in Dubai? “Summer” in Dubai realistically runs from May until October .

Exactly how hot is Dubai? Check out this chart for Dubai’s average reported monthly temperatures (1) .

What you feel in Dubai and what is actually reported in the peas of summer can also be two different things! You need to take into account not only the temperature but also the humidity. It helps if you have a weather app that gives you the “feels like” temperature as well!

The humidity in Dubai tends to be more noticeable in the latter half of summer, August to September.

It’s also important to note that although you don’t get the sun’s powerful heat overnight, the temperatures don’t drop below 30°C (86°F). You can certainly see and do much more after dark without the glaring sun and heat, but be realistic about what can be done at night, too.

Let’s just agree: Dubai in summer is hot.

Dealing with the summer heat in Dubai is not nearly as difficult for most tourists as it might seem. First, nearly everything is airconditioned to the max—even too cold. You will arrive in an airconditioned airport, transfer to an airconditioned car or Metro train, and arrive at an air-conditioned accommodation. Even bus stops are air-conditioned in many locations!

Whilst the outside air temperature is extreme, most hotels will chill their pools in the summer months to make them a refreshing retreat. Swimming is still best tackled in the early morning and late afternoon/evenings (or look for a hotel with an indoor pool if you’d still like to get your laps in!).

The same cannot be said for the ocean, however!  You must be mindful that the salty waters of the Gulf can be too hot for swimming in over the summer (32-35°C/90-95°F); it will feel more like spa water than a refreshing break.

And if it isn’t obvious, the sand becomes excruciatingly hot in the summer. It only takes burning sand to become trapped in your sandals or flip-flops once to work this out, let alone if you dare walk on it barefoot!

You should always dress sensibly for the heat.  However, please don’t have any misconceptions that ladies need to be wearing a full head covering or burka! This means, ideally, wearing loose cotton clothing that is still respectable.

A couple of important summer clothing observations:

• Tourists must note the difference between “resort wear” and what you wear publicly.  Although this seems to have relaxed over the years (maybe too much?), as a sign of respect, keep the skimpy clothing and bathers only to the pool & beach.
• When walking through hotel public areas, on public transport, in malls and restaurants , you should ALWAYS dress respectfully for the Muslim country you are in. At a minimum, think covered knees and shoulders for both sexes and nothing too clingy and revealing – yep, you will see many people flaunting this “rule”.
• Stick with cotton/rayon and breathable materials. Man-made materials will make you even hotter and sweatier.
• Temperature drops between outside and indoor air conditioning can be extreme. Make no mistake, you will still want to pack a wrap or cardigan for those indoor blasts of cold!

Dubai Summer Attractions to Try in 2024

Whilst many seasonal favourites may be closed, there’s still plenty happening indoors to enjoy in Dubai over the summer months.

One of the world’s largest malls still has a huge amount going on over the summer. You could spend a few days here and not run out of things to do!

Sitting in the heart of “Downtown Dubai”, some of our favourites at Dubai Mall include:

• Burj Khalifa Observation Deck – (Levels 124 & 125 “At The Top” advance booking essential). The entrance is through the Dubai Mall basement level.
• Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo   – you can view the world’s largest suspended tank from within the Mall for free or come in for plenty of interactive water life experiences.
• Kidzania Dubai – a real-to-life town where kids “work” to earn Kidzos to spend on fun activities.
• Play DXB (Formerly VR Park) – a virtual reality theme park.
• Dubai Ice Rink   – indoor ice skating fun on a full-sized Olympic rink.
• Dubai Opera – offering a year-round program of incredible entertainment from traditional opera to the best of Westend theatre and internationally acclaimed acts.
• Evening fountain show of Burj Lake , plus LED light show on the Burj Khalifa.
• With the kids, don’t forget the giant Hamleys store, plus The Toy Store in the basement – plenty of FREE fun entertainment!

Dubai Mall is certainly not the only shopping mall with a lot going on.  In fact, malls are where most summer life circulates during the day in Dubai. 

You can also try a few more novel indoor ideas in Dubai, such as:

It is easy to reach on the Metro (the stop is aptly named Mall of the Emirates), about 30 minutes away from Dubai Mall. The Mall of the Emirates is fairly close to those staying at any of the Jumeirah Hotels and is only about 10 minutes from the Dubai Marina/JBR area.

• Ski Dubai & penguin encounters – sub-zero temperatures in the peak of summer, yes please!!
• Magic Planet – extensive family entertainment complex including Yalla! Bowling , Highway66 mini bowling and Gravity Air Park – think trampolines!
• Catch the latest flix at the huge Vox Cinema complex
• Dreamscape – VR Experience rooms

Situated south of Dubai city, this great suburban mall has entertainment and dining options. It’s not on the Metro, so you’d need a taxi/Uber . Why not try

• ifly indoor flying simulator gravity-defying indoor fun!
• Sky Trails and Climbing Wall  – part of the Magic Planet kids entertainment centre.
• Massive 20-screen Vox Cinema offers every type of movie screening you can imagine!

A smaller community Mall that’s got a few key fun entertainment attractions for summer! You’ll find it on the Red Metro line (Rostamani Tower is 300m away, a 4 min walk or Financial Centre Metro is about 350m away 5 min walk)

• Adventure Zone by Adventure HQ – offering indoor climbing walls, obstacle courses and more
• Chillout Ice Lounge – enjoy a desert drink in sub-zero temperatures!

One of the city’s newest mega malls has loads of fun new indoor instalments, including:

• Storm Coaster – the world’s largest indoor rollercoaster.
• Adventure Park – climbing walls to rope courses keeping kids active indoors, designed for kids 4+.
• Play DXB – another instalment of the highly popular VR Park as found in Dubai Mall (but with fewer queues for attractions!)

These are the best ones for keeping cool inside, though you may still need to walk outside a little to get to them!

• The Dubai Frame – superb views as well as interactive displays around Dubai’s past and present in Zabeel Park.
• Etihad Museum – learn more about the country’s recent history and journey to unification.
• The Green Planet Dubai – an entirely indoor biodome experience that transports you to a tropical rainforest (warm but much cooler than outside!!) at City Walk.
• La Perle evening extravaganza by Dragone is one of the city’s most highly acclaimed stage shows, and it has a permanent home in Al Habtoor City.

• IMG Worlds of Adventure is the only entirely indoor theme park in Dubai.
• Dubai Parks and Resorts is another favourite family offering, including Legoland Dubai , Motiongate , and the newly opened Real Madrid World (in place of Bollywood). As it’s partly outdoors, it may not suit everyone – though you can also retreat inside to the expansive indoor play space, Neon Galaxy .

There’s a good detailed review here what you should expect at Dubai Parks and Resorts in the summer so you are fully prepared for just how hot it can be and what remains open.

• If time permits and you have access to a transfer, our favourite indoor theme park is actually Warner Bros World in Abu Dhabi – you can easily access Warner Bros on a day trip from Dubai . We’d add to this list SeaWorld Yas Island, too, which is entirely indoors and includes the frosty-cold Antarctica realm, kept at 1°C!

The water parks are the main outdoor attractions that are still in full operation over the hottest summer months in Dubai.

Dubai Waterparks

• Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park (entry included if you stay at Atlantis the Palm).
• Wild Wadi Water Park (Entry included if you stay at one of the Jumeirah hotels – currently not open for public ticket sales).
• Legoland Water Park – best for your smaller kids, based out in Jebel Ali attached to the Dubai Parks & Resorts complex.
• Yas Waterworld (ok this one is actually on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi but it is definitely worth considering as a day trip, alongside the entirely indoors Warner Bros World with a free shuttle service from Dubai)

REMEMBER: Even if you hire a cabana, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade, it can still be excruciatingly hot outside even at a water park. Be mindful of hot surfaces (wear flip-flops or non-slip pool shoes everywhere and be VERY careful of touching surfaces).

Outdoor evening activities to try in Dubai in Summer:

As long as you are prepared for it to still be quite sweaty, even after dark, you could try these evening activities in Dubai once the sun goes down.

• Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park – previously a winter venue, this park stayed open over Eid evenings last year and looks like it may stick around for a much longer season to light up your balmy evenings.
• Walk around the Al Fahidi neighbourhood , taking in many of the city’s museums and galleries and along the creekfront at Al Seef before catching a traditional abra across the gold and spice souks in Deira.
• The Walk in JBR, a popular outdoor dining district alongside the beach, still has a vibrant nightlife, although outdoor dining is mostly removed in the peak of summer.
• Souk Madinat Jumeirah – a much more modern souk experience. From here, you get the spectacular views back to Burj Al Arab. Mostly indoor and airconditioned, lots of dining options and picturesque waterways.
• A traditional dhow boat around Dubai Fountain Lake – see the Dubai fountains up close in this spectacular evening sound and light show.

Should I do a Dubai desert safari in Summer?

Many desert safari companies do continue to run over the summer, albeit on a reduced program.

We think this depends on how you cope with the heat, but from many years of experience, anything from late May to early October starts to get really sticky outside.

If you are heat-lovers you may still enjoy it, but with young kids, I would be extremely cautious of recommending a desert safari in the summer. An option might be to take an early morning desert safari instead to beat the worst heat of the day.

Our favourite attractions in Dubai that are NOT operational in summer (see links to find out when they will re-open, it;s variably around the end of October/early November) include:

• Dubai Miracle Garden
• Global Village Dubai
• Ripe outdoor markets
• Many day safari and beach sporting operators

Many restaurants and attractions do now remain open throughout summer, albeit with significantly reduced programs or only opening in the evenings. Outdoor brunches stop in the summer, and rooftop decks will only open in the evenings, if at all.

It’s always best to check opening hours from Ramadan (April onwards) all the way through summer for anything with an outdoor element.

Where to Stay in Dubai Over the Summer

The good news is that the answer is almost anywhere. All Dubai hotels will be airconditioned, and it’s very uncommon to come across a hotel that does not chill their pool in summer.

If you stay in a hotel directly attached to one of the malls or souqs, you will have excellent access to leisure and dining facilities without having to put a foot outside. Why not try;

• Sheraton  at Mall of the Emirates, or top-end hotel, even with a ski lodge suite, try the Kempinski
• Address Dubai Mall and Address Downtown – attached to Dubai Mall
• Armani Hotel Dubai in Burj Khalifa, attached to Dubai Mall
• Address Dubai Marina attached to Dubai Marina Mall
• Jumeirah Al Naseem attached to Souk Madinat Jumeirah
• InterContinental at Dubai Festival City – very close to DXB airport too
• Jumeirah Beach Hotel attached to Wild Wadi Water Park
• Atlantis the Palm attached to Aquaventure
• Lapita at Dubai Parks & Resorts and Legoland Water Park

Many hotel resorts also include mini water parks, lazy rivers, and kids’ clubs within their grounds. The choices are almost endless, and the summer value can be fantastic. A few suggestions to try:

• Dukes t he Palm – lazy river & Duksey kids club (and stunning infinity pool )
• Le Meridien Mina Seyahi – kids pool & kids club, playground, extensive dining options
• Habtoor Grand Resort – slides, kids pool & infinity pool, indoor playground

For a truly unique experience during your Dubai stopover – and if the budget will stretch – why not stay in a hotel with a private pool?

If you are only in Dubai for a very short stopover, you may opt to simply stay in the airport over the hottest time of the year. We have a complete guide to things to do in DXB Airport here.

Summer travellers may also be able to take advantage of the My Emirates Pass, which provides discounts on scores of restaurants, retail stores and attractions, simply by showing you have an Emirates boarding pass (we await details of the 2024 program).

More frequently asked questions about summer in Dubai

It really depends on what you feel is “hot”. Generally speaking, it starts to get too hot for outdoor activity by the end of May. Many seasonal and outdoor events will start to close at the end of April/start of May. You will find little reprieve from the Dubai heat until the end of October.

Dubai can still be really pleasant and enjoyable to visit in the summer if you’re prepared to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors and set your expectations of what is possible to do in the summer heat. If you have an interest in visiting many of the city’s indoor attractions and are happy to leave most of your outdoor activities until after dark , you can still have a great vacation in Dubai in the summer.

This really depends on your tolerance to heat and what you want to do in Dubai. If you’re looking for a beach vacation full of days on the beach and playing in the water with the kids, you may be better off waiting for the weather to cool a little from October through April. If, however, your plans see you flying through Dubai in the hottest months, you can still absolutely fill an itinerary with more indoor activities and stay up later in the evening when the air cools (a little). Life just changes around a little in Dubai to cope with the heat.

Both July and August are extremely hot in Dubai, though the increase in humidity makes August feel like the hottest month.

Dubai Summer Surprises 2024 reveals biggest line-up of events

65-day promotion starting on June 28 includes shopping deals, shows and prizes

Dubai: Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), which runs from June 28 to September 1, on Tuesday revealed its biggest line-up of events, including shopping deals, shows, and prizes.

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festival & Retail Establishment (DFRE), said: “This year’s Dubai Summer Surprises features the biggest summer line-up launched to date. Promising a memorable summer for everyone, we’ve designed an exceptional DSS programme that features thousands of offers and things to do for everyone, from families to friends and couples, and from value seekers and luxury explorers to adventure hunters.”

He added: “Catering to every preference and price point, Dubai has set out to outdo itself yet again as it offers a compelling alternative to traditional summer destinations, with world-class entertainment, endless offers, exciting adventures, and a vibrant culinary scene.”

Opening weekend

The DSS Opening Weekend Celebrations will light up select malls in Dubai on June 28. Visitors can expect live entertainment, featuring a mix of music, dance, and performing arts. City Centre Mirdif will feature captivating acts by Norwegian dance group Quick Style, Jordanian indie band Autostrad, Jordanian-Palestinian singer and songwriter Dana Salah, Iraqi–Canadian singer and songwriter Ali Gatie; while Mall of the Emirates will see DJ Keza, DJ Tala Samman, and DJ Sonya spin their beats alongside dance performances by Hallway Boyz, Moto Dancers, and a Bharatnatyam and Hip-Hop Fusion. Dubai Festival City Mall will host dazzling parades, mesmerising dances, and captivating stilt walkers as they create an unforgettable summer atmosphere.

Also, performers Georges Wassouf and Al Shami will take the stage at Coca-Cola Arena on June 28. Three rapping sensations - Xzibit, D12, and Obie Trice - will perform at Coca-Cola Arena on June 29; followed by Ethiopin pop star Teddy Afro, who will perform at the venue on June 30.

12-hour sale

The DSS 12 Hour Sale will be held on June 28 from 10am to 10pm, with discounts of up to 90 per cent off across more than 100 brands at select malls.

Modesh World

Modesh World will mark its 25th anniversary grand celebrations this year, welcoming visitors at one of the region’s largest indoor entertainment and amusement facilities with 170 rides and attractions, including an all-new Inflatable Park and Animal World Play Area, more than 100 arcade games and VR experiences, soft play areas, and much more. There will also be over 20 dining options, including a Modesh Cafe.

The DSS opening weekend will also see the launch of Movie Magic at select cinemas across Dubai. Visitors can expect daily surprises, win instant prizes, and avail combo deals on tickets and snacks.

This summer, the Beat the Heat concert series returns for its third edition, transforming Dubai World Trade Centre into a hub of Indie Arabic music. Presented as a collaboration between Spotlighthive, Dubai Summer Surprises, and Dubai Calendar, this year’s edition goes beyond music to offer a full entertainment experience with games and food and beverage zones across two weekends – July 12-13 and July 19-20. Performances from Siilawy, Marwan Moussa, and a line-up of regional stars like Dafencii, Hleem, and Soulja are scheduled. Dubai will also welcome performers such as Abo El Anwar, Abyusif, Moscow, Big Sam, Noel Kharmen, and Aziz Maraka.

For classic music enthusiasts, the 2024 Symphonic Middle East Festival brings together a performance by ST-DUO, a piano duo alongside tango by Argentinian dancers. The event opens on July 5 at Zabeel Theatre, Dubai.

Hundreds of hotels are offering Kids Go Free offers, along with attractions like Madame Tussauds, The View at The Palm, Burj Khalifa At the Top, and the AYA Universe. Additionally, dozens of top hotels and resorts across the city are offering couples offers, including getaways, wellness retreats, fine-dining experiences, and more.

Exclusive package

The exclusive DSS Entertainer package unlocks over 7,000 buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) offers across a selection of dining, attractions, water parks, beauty, fitness locations and other destination experiences across Dubai. The DSS Entertainer is priced at Dh195, with all exclusive offers being redeemable every day of the week. The DSS Entertainer is available until September 1, and is valid from three months of the date of activation. What’s more, users can share BOGO vouchers with up to three friends.

Retail promotions

Residents and visitors can avail 10 weeks of retail deals across more than 800 brands at over 3,500 stores throughout the city, where discounts of up to 75 per cent await. Participating stores will offer a chance to win prizes and exclusive weekly promotions.

DSS Daily Surprises promises to be another experience for bargain hunters from July 2 to 4 August 4, bringing 34 days of daily surprises across sports, fashion, beauty, and home labels. Details for each day’s surprise will only be unveiled 24 hours beforehand.

The Summer Restaurant Week will run from August 23 to September 1 with a curated list of 50 top family-friendly restaurants offering specially priced set menus for lunch and dinner.

Kicking off on July 15 is the inaugural edition of Sizzling Summer Eats. For 30 days, foodies can enjoy discounts on a curated list of 100 of Dubai’s best “family-friendly” restaurants starting at 20 per cent for two and rising up to 30 per cent for four diners.

Activations

Retail hotspots across the city participation in DSS include Box Park, The Outlet Village, Al Seef, Al Khawaneej Walk, and Last Exit Al Khawaneej.

The Dubai Summer Surprises Raffle Campaign 2024 will put the keys to a brand-new GAC GS8 2024 in the hands of six shoppers from June 28 to September 1. Upon spends of Dh200 or more at 18 participating malls, shoppers can automatically enter into the draw.

Dubai’s malls will offer back-to-school offers from August 5 to 28 with a Back to School Raffle Campaign 2024. A Dh200 spend can get customers to score a digital raffle ticket and enter to win a share of Dh100,000. As many as 20 winners have the opportunity to take home Dh5,000 each.

The DSS Mega Raffle from 16 June to 26 August will bring eight winners the chance to cruise into the summer in brand new Mini Coopers. Shoppers can buy raffle coupons for Dh50 at ENOC stations or select malls, with every 10,000 tickets sold resulting in a draw.

Expo City Dubai is calling young explorers aged 5-12 years to enjoy summer experiences from 8 July - 23 August. Offering a blend of learning and fun, the camp is packed with creative activities, hands-on workshops, outdoor discoveries.

The Al Shindagha Museum Summer Camp will immerse children aged 6-13 years in challenges and indoor activities. Running over two weeks, from 15-19 July and 22-26 July, children will have the opportunity to hone their critical thinking, physical prowess, and problem-solving.

DSS will feature themed structures, lighting displays, branding illuminating the city, and performing arts. Bringing aerial shows and more, these city-wide activations will bring a festive ambience to Dubai all summer.

Moreover DSS mascots Modesh and Dana will pop up as statues across Dubai and DSS flags will be displayed across prominent locations.
