More Than 30 Rules, Tips, and Other Tidbits About the Delta Companion Certificate

Chris Carley

The Companion Certificate awarded annually to several Delta SkyMiles® American Express Card members can be a great benefit. But a few restrictions, rules, and “Can I…?” questions may make it confusing or difficult to redeem them.

Below are some questions and answers we hope will help!

What is the Companion Certificate?

The companion certificate is a perk some cardholders receive annually — beginning the second year of membership.

You do not receive the companion certificate (or “BOGOF,” as we call it, for “Buy One, Get One Free”) the first year you hold the card.

Put simply, it allows someone to fly a free (plus some tax/fees) on one roundtrip with a paying passenger who applies the companion certificate.

Delta Air Lines' Airbus A321neo First Class seats

Which Delta Amexes Come with the Companion Certificate Feature?

These cards all have Companion Certificates.

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card

When Do I Receive It?

Generally, a few days after your second year’s annual fee is billed.

Can the Companion Certificate Be Used on All Delta Flights?

The Companion Certificate can be redeemed for Delta-marketed or -operated flights to select destinations. This includes Delta Connection but  not codeshares.

If your Certificate was issued on or after February 1, 2024, you’re in luck. You can use it to travel to:

  • Including Alaska and Hawaii
  • Dominican Republic
  • Puerto Rico
  • Grand Cayman
  • Turks and Caicos
  • Saint Kitts
  • St. Maarten
  • El Salvador

If it was issued prior to February 1, you’re limited to just the continental United States.

Where Do I Find the Delta Amex Companion Certificate? Is It a Physically Certificate That’s Mailed to Me?

The Companion Certificate is a digital award. There are two ways to locate your Companion Certificate.

Delta’s Website

  • Bookmark this page that takes you directly to “Credits and Certificates.” Use that link when logged in to Delta.com SkyMiles account. Done!

Can I Use the Companion Certificate Multiple Times?

No. They are single-use certificates. Once you redeem one, it’s gone for the year.

Can I Have More Than One Companion Certificate at a Time?

Yes! I held all four of the above credit cards and received a Companion Certificate for each. However, you won’t have multiple certificates for an individual card at the same time.

Well, unless something in the below paragraph happens.

Do Delta Amex Companion Certificates Expire?

Yes. And this part is VERY IMPORTANT:

Your trip must be completed by the state expiration date. This is not like other Delta certificates (bump vouchers, etc.) that give you a year during which you can book travel for a date up to another year in advance.

We heard that a couple of years ago that if your Companion Certificate expired, Amex would do you a favor and reissue it for 13 months. We’re not sure if that’s something they still do.

Does the Cardholder Have to Fly on the Companion Certificate Reservation?

The cardholder doesn’t even need to know the people flying on the companion certificate. (I did this for my neighbor’s grandsons so they could come home for Christmas after their grandfather died. I never met ‘em and I don’t remember their names.)

The cardholder — or someone with access to the cardholder’s SkyMiles account — must book the ticket.

Is the Certificate Good Only for Non-Stops? Or are connections OK?

Trips with connections are fine. (I’ve done it many times) Delta will show you what trips are available for Companion Certificate travel.

It does not work, however, with multi-city trips or open-jaws.

If There Are Two Seats Open on a Delta Flight, Can I Use the Companion Certificate?

The companion certificates are limited to certain fare classes. The companion cert page (again, accessed via this link ) will show you what itineraries are eligible for booking.

The Platinum and Reserve companion certs are eligible for L, U, T, X, and V fares in Main Cabin/coach.

The Reserve’s cert may be used for:

  • First Class I and Z fares
  • Delta Premium Select travel A and G fares
  • Comfort+ W and S fares (but only when L, U, T, X, or V classes of service are available in the Main Cabin)
  • Main Cabin L, U, T, X, and V fares

Inventory may not always be available for flights you want. That’s pretty much my only gripe about the companion certificate.

I was told that fare classes must be the same one way if you have a connection.

For example, I often use my Companion Certificates so my wife and daughter can fly from Los Angeles (LAX) to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Fargo (FAR) for our family trips once or twice a year.

The LAX to MSP flight and then our MSP to FAR connection both have to be, say, an “L” fare. But the returns would need to be the same fare class, but not necessarily an “L.” In this example, FAR to MSP and then MSP to LAX could be a “U.”

If you have a Delta Reserve Amex or Delta Reserve Business Amex Companion Certificate, you can mix and match cabins. In other words, you can fly First Class one way and then return in Main Cabin (if necessary.)

Are There Any Other Trip Requirements?

Most companion certificate fares require:

  • advance purchase of up to 14 days
  • three-night minimum stay
  • 30-day maximum stay

How Do I Redeem the Companion Certificate?

Go to the Credits and Certificates page you bookmarked. Click the checkbox next to where the cert says “OPEN.” And continue from there.

So, I Can’t Call Delta and Have a Phone Agent Book a Companion Certificate Flight for Me?

Technically , no.

I’ve been told you can’t. René said it’s worked just fine. I’ve also spoken to a few Delta agents who are happy to help book Companion Certificate reservations. And there is a phone number dedicated to Companion Certificate reservations help. (We’ll get to that in a second.)

Given that Delta IT is, you know, Delta IT, you might not see all the available fare classes available for companion certificates. You may want to conduct your own search separately from the Credits and Certificates page, find a qualifying itinerary, and then call Delta to see if they can help book it.

What is the Companion Certificate Desk Phone Number?

855-551-2113. Give that number a call if you need help with Companion Certificate reservations.

The departure level at Delta Air Lines' new Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York (LGA).

Does the Companion Pay Any Fees?

Yes. Taxes, surcharges, and other miscellaneous charges are not waived. The limit is $80 for roundtrip domestic flights (for trips with up to four flight segments), and no more than $250 for roundtrip international flights to eligible destinations (up to four flight segments).

Personally, I’ve never come close to paying that much.

Do I Have to Pay with a Delta Amex?

The Companion Cert’s terms & conditions say “Primary Ticket and Companion ticket must be purchased with your (Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express.)”

The only card type you must use is an American Express card .

Delta Amex cards reward you only two or three SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta (depending on which Delta Amex you hold).

You can do way better than that — if your main goal is earning points.

Pay with any darn Amex card you want. Personally, I use The Platinum Card® from American Express because I earn 5X American Express® Membership Rewards® Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel (up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year).

However, both Delta Reserve Amexes award cardholders $1 MQD for every $10 in eligible purchases. The Delta Platinum Amexes award $1 for every $20 in eligible purchases. So, if earning status through credit card spending is one of your priorities, then you might want to use your Delta Amex.

Can I Use Delta eCredits to Pay for the Primary Traveler’s Fare?

Yes! But they need to be in the primary traveler’s name.

Can I Pay with SkyMiles?

Nope. The primary fare has to be paid for with real money. Here’s one instance where Delta doesn’t want you using SkyMiles as currency.

Unfortunately, it’s not like Southwest’s companion pass which can be used with award tickets.

Can I Redeem the Companion Certificate for Flights Involving Co-Terminals?

You should be able to use the Delta Amex Companion Certificate for trips involving co-terminals. For example, depart from New York’s Kennedy Airport (JFK) and return to LaGuardia (LGA). In another sample trip, you’d travel to Hollywood-Burbank (BUR) and depart from Los Angeles (LAX).

How Many People Can Be on My Companion Certificate Reservation?

Just two: the paying passenger and the complimentary companion.

However, you can certainly book travel for others (friends, family, etc) taking the same flights as you. Just be sure to link everyone’s reservations.

You can do this two ways: call Delta reservations or use Delta’s chat/message function.

They will need:

  • The trips’ confirmation numbers
  • SkyMiles numers (if applicable)
  • Travelers’ names
  • Travel dates
  • Departure and destination cities

Can I Use Multiple Companion Certificates for a Group of Four People on a Trip?

I’ve done it multiple times — but booked separately and on multiple reservations . (Keep in mind the fare price may go up after the first booking. Or an eligible fare may not even be available.)

For example, my mother-in-law and I use a companion certificate to book flight 1234. We’re issued confirmation number ABC123.

My wife and daughter will use another companion certificate to book the same flight; they’ll be on confirmation CBA321.

Then we link the reservations using the above method.

Can I Get Upgraded?

If the primary/purchasing passenger is a Delta Medallion, yes. Upgrades clear according to status level and the usual rules .

However, the companion must be at least a SkyMiles member or partner airline elite member . Otherwise, the twosome will not be eligible for upgrades.

If I’m a Platinum or Diamond, Can I Apply Upgrade Certificates?

You can apply both Regional Upgrade and Global Upgrade Certificates (for Delta One) to your Companion Certificate booking.

Where in a Delta Airplane Can I Sit Using a Companion Certificate?

The standard, cash fare seating rules apply to companion certificate bookings.

If you’re a general SkyMiles member, you can reserve any available non-preferred Main Cabin seat.

Silvers and Golds can get any available Main Cabin preferred seat (i.e. exit rows).

Platinums and Golds can get any available Main Cabin seat (including preferred) and then upgrade (almost instantly) to C+ if they wish.

Can I Earn SkyMiles?

The person flying as the paying passenger will earn:

  • Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD)
  • SkyMiles/redeemable miles (according to their status tier).

The companion doesn’t earn anything — but is flying for almost free. They’re fine.

Can I Change a Companion Certificate Reservation?

Yes, but you’re subject to any fare differences. Remember to track your fares using Google Flights — you might be able to earn back some flight credit!

You’ll also have to call Delta directly to have them change the reservation for you.

What If I Have to Cancel My Trip? Do I Get the BOGOF Credit Back to My Account?

You’re not supposed to. That said, we’ve heard that if you cancel a ticket booking using a Companion Certificate, you  might be able to call Delta and have it reopened or reissued.

Even if I Cancel Within 24 Hours of Booking?

You  should be able to get it back. But I suggest you call Delta directly.

Bad News! My Companion Got Sick and Can’t Go. Can I Still Use the Ticket Even Though I’m the Primary/Paying Passenger?

Technically , no. The terms basically say if one person has to cancel, the trip’s off. And, of course, you lose the Companion Cert until your next one is issued.

However, we’ve heard of people calling Delta and asking them to split the reservation into separate confirmation numbers. Tell them the situation and very politely ask if they’ll help. Documentation (doctor’s notes, etc.) may help.

Don’t Put Yourself In that Situation

Emergencies pop up from time to time. Stuff happens, as the saying goes.

But don’t put yourself in a situation where you may have to cancel a trip, especially like this one.

Please listen to my advice on this : I speak from experience and cannot stress this enough: do not apply a Companion Certificate to travel involving a friend, family member, associate, or colleague who:

  • has an erratic schedule
  • is flaky and unreliable
  • isn’t in good health

No joke: we’ve expressly forbidden a certain person in my close travel group from ever again being on a Companion Certificate itinerary.

Will I Lose My Companion Certificate if I Cancel My Delta Amex Card?

Amex will say yes and tell you not to cancel your card.

You won’t.

Once it’s in your account, it’s yours.

Can I Sell My Companion Certificate?

I wouldn’t do that. You run the risk of Delta canceling your Companion Certificate and SkyMiles account altogether.

What Else Should I Know?

As a parent, I love the Companion Certificate. As long as one of the tickets is priced at $351 (for the Delta Platinum Amex companion cert), we come out ahead of the annual fee. ( See Rates and Fees. )

Writer Chris Carley's daughter sitting in first class on a Delta Air Lines flight, using the companion pass from one of his Delta American Express cards.

For the Reserve card’s Companion Cert, being able to buy first class can come in quite handy. If your schedule is fairly inflexible but there’s no Main Cabin Companion Cert inventory, two higher-priced coach seats may cost about the same as using the BOGOF for a First Class seat and a free companion seat. Plus, the primary earns MQD, which are important if they’re chasing status.

Use your certificates and have fun!

You can read the rest of the Companion Certificates rules and regulations here .

This is a Lot of Information! Does Anyone Help with Booking Delta Amex Companion Certificates?

Absolutely.

Our good friend Adam and his team at point.me are experienced with booking Delta Amex BOGOF trips and happy to help you!

What you need to know about Delta eCredits

How to use a delta ecredit, delta credit cards that earn skymiles, can a delta ecredit be used for someone else, if you want to use delta ecredits.

Delta eCredits usually expire after one year from date of purchase (not from the date of the original flight).

Delta has extended the expiration for eCredits during the pandemic through Dec. 31, 2023.

You can use your Delta flight credit by logging into your account and accessing them there, or by purchasing a flight and choosing to use them for payment.

If you booked travel during the pandemic, it's more likely than not that you canceled those plans. Many airlines, including Delta Air Lines, revamped their cancellation policies and made it easier to rebook a future trip without losing money.

However, these cancellations do not result in a cash refund, but rather an “eCredit” toward future travel. Here’s what you need to know about these credits.

» Learn more: The guide to the Delta Air Lines SkyMiles program

Delta eCredits are issued to those who booked a Delta flight and had to cancel it for one reason or another.

In the past, voluntarily canceling a Delta flight meant having to pay a cancellation fee of at least $200. Now, the full value of a canceled trip is available for use without any fees.

delta travel certificate

Delta eCredit rules and expirations

Do Delta eCredits expire? Yes. A Delta flight credit is valid until the original ticket expires. Usually, tickets are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

You can make changes, cancel your flight and complete new bookings online or over the phone. If you’re positive you want to cancel your flight, but can’t decide when you want to travel again, it’s best to make a cancellation first and rebook when your new travel plans solidify.

Where to find your eCredits

To locate your unused travel vouchers, create a Delta SkyMiles account, then head to www.delta.com/redeem. There, you can look up certificates and eCredits by contact info, SkyMiles account info, credit card, or your certificate or eCredit number.

find delta ecredit

Enter your desired information in the field and click Look Up.

On the next page, you’ll have to validate your eCredit by entering the first and last names of the passenger. Once you click Add, the page will reload, and your voucher value will show up under Manually Entered Certificates and eCredits.

If the reservation includes multiple passengers, you have to repeat this step for every traveler included in the booking.

Those who booked flights using their SkyMiles number shouldn’t need to hunt down their credits manually. They should already be listed under the Certificates, eCredits and Vouchers tab in the account.

Is your Delta eCredit not showing up?

If your Delta eCredit is not working, you have to call Delta customer service at 800-221-1212 to apply an unused eCredit to a new reservation. If you’re unable to locate your voucher or can’t select it when making a booking, an agent can help.

Can I use a Delta eCredit for a seat upgrade?

You can use a Delta eCredit for a seat upgrade on flights booked with cash.

Use the 'Modify Flight' tool in your SkyMiles account, select your same flight in a higher cabin and then pay the fare difference with your eCredit.

There are two ways to redeem a Delta eCredit for a flight.

1. Via your SkyMiles account

If you log in to your SkyMiles account and go to your profile, a page with your personal details will appear. On the left side, under Profile, click on Certificates, eCredits & Vouchers.

delta travel certificate

You’ll be taken to a page with all your Delta eCredits, Unused eTickets and Companion Certificates, including their monetary values and expiration dates.

delta travel certificate

Check the box of the voucher you want to apply to your new reservation and continue to book your flight. If the new flight is more expensive than what your credit is worth, you'll have to cover the difference.

If you want to apply multiple eCredits to your ticket, keep in mind that Delta limits you to three payment methods online. You can choose up to three Delta certificates per reservation. If they don’t cover the entire cost of new airfare, pick two eCredits and use a credit card to pay for the remainder.

2. Book as normal and pay with eCredits

The second option to redeem your Delta eCredit is by making a booking as you normally would from the homepage. Select your flight times, confirm passenger info and click on Use eCredits when selecting a payment method. Once your active credits appear, select the one(s) you want to redeem and finish your booking.

If you pick just one or two vouchers from a list of credits, use the ones that expire the earliest, even if they’re in a smaller amount. You don’t want them to expire before you get another chance to redeem them.

delta travel certificate

Remember that you must be signed into SkyMiles for the credits associated with your account to be available for use.

If your Delta eCredit isn't sufficient to cover your entire flight, use a Delta card to pay for the remaining balance so you earn Delta miles on the portion that you pay for using the card.

» Learn more: Is a Delta credit card worth it?

Any eCredit refund issued to a specific passenger must be used to book new travel for the same passenger. It can’t be used for someone else.

Unfortunately, this means you can’t use travel credits from a family or group trip for yourself or another group. You can book tickets to another destination, of course, but the individuals named on the original flight must be on the new flight.

So the answer to "Are Delta eCredits transferable?" is no.

Thanks to a flyer-friendly policy announced during the pandemic, Delta passengers have a generous window to rebook their canceled flights through the new eCredit refund system. Although it requires a bit of legwork to locate all your unused Delta credits, the ability to put the money you already paid the airline toward a new ticket will be worth it.

Make sure to keep a good record of all your canceled trips so you don’t lose any eCredits in the shuffle before they expire. And remember, you can’t use eCredits to book travel for someone who was not on the original ticket.

How to Check Your Delta Airlines Certificates, Vouchers, and Flight eCredits

Using Delta certificates and eCredits can be a great way to save money when you travel with Delta. To see if you have any eCredits, vouchers, or certificates available for your upcoming trip, it’s important to know how to check your account. Checking your account is a quick and easy process that only takes about three minutes. Here are three simple steps to check how many certificates and eCredits you have in your account.

How to Check Your Delta Airlines Certificates, Vouchers, and Flight eCredits

I’ll walk you through the process of checking on your Delta credits, and also answer some frequently asked questions from site visitors on the subject.

Let’s get going!

Table of Contents

How Do I Check to See If I Have Delta eCredits, Certificates, or Vouchers?

First, let’s discuss how to easily and quickly check up on how many Delta eCredits you have on your Delta account.

Note that instead of giving the original ticket booker one sizable eCredit, Delta often issues little eCredits to each flyer listed on your reservation. Therefore, finding all of your trip’s eCredits may involve some research. It will be a bit of a pain if you have a large group on your reservation.

You’re in luck if you used your Delta SkyMiles number to make your reservation. Your Delta profile’s “Certificates, Vouchers & eCredits” section will display the number of credits and vouchers you have.

Did you not use your SkyMiles number when making your reservation? Not to worry. Simply visit Delta.com/redeem using your 13-digit e-Ticket number, which starts with #006 and may be found on your Delta confirmation. It should pop up when you enter that number in the “Certificate or eCredit #” section.

To check your Delta certificates, vouchers, and eCredits:

  • Start at “My Delta”

On either the Delta website or app, start at the home page, and navigate to the “My Delta” page. This will take you to a page where your entire account’s worth of information is saved.

  • Go to “My Wallet”

Choose the “Credits and Certificates” option under “My Wallet” from the menu in the top right corner. This will show all of your account’s Credits, Certificates, eCertificates, and eCredits.

  • View “Certificates and eCredits”

You can view each specific credit or certificate type in the final step. There are a few examples, such the following:

  • Delta eCerts – These can be exchanged for a range of deals on flights that qualify. These include companion passes, such as the one you’ll get with the Delta Reserve card if you pay the yearly cost, which, in my opinion, can make the premium well worth it.
  • Delta eCredits are a particular dollar amount that can be used to offset the cost of a Delta ticket along with any applicable taxes and fees.

What’s better than getting a great deal on a plane ticket? Getting 2 plane tickets for the price of 1! Getting a 2-for-1 deal on a plane ticket is possible with a companion ticket .

Southwest Airlines’ Companion Pass is probably the most well-known companion ticket perk, but did you know that Delta also offers a companion ticket? It’s not quite the same, but it still has a lot of value.

Here’s how to get a Delta Companion Certificate and use it for maximum value!

The Delta Companion Certificate is a great perk that comes with select Delta credit cards . This perk allows you to essentially get a 2-for-1 deal on a plane ticket. When you purchase 1 ticket, you can use the Delta Companion Certificate to purchase a second ticket, and you only have to pay the taxes and fees (no more than $80 for roundtrip domestic flights and no more than $250 for roundtrip international flights (both for itineraries with up to four flight segments).

Here are a few rules from Delta to keep in mind when using your Delta Companion Certificate:

  • The ticket is good for domestic, Caribbean, or Central American ticket
  • Companion tickets can be transferred, so you can book for someone else. But once the ticket is issued, it’s not transferable.
  • Companion tickets can’t be applied to fares that have already been purchased.
  • If you cancel your reservation , your companion ticket won’t be reissued.
  • The companion ticket must be for the exact same flight as the original paid ticket. You can’t use the companion ticket to purchase a fare for a friend on a different flight.
  • Travel for the Companion Certificate must be booked and completed by the date on the certificate.
  • The paid ticket and companion ticket are both eligible for upgrades as long as both passengers are either Delta SkyMiles members or elite members of a SkyTeam alliance partner airline. Any upgrades will be processed according to the passenger with the highest Delta status.
  • Companion ticket fares may require an advance purchase of up to 14 days, a 3-night minimum stay, or a 30-day maximum stay.
  • Some flights may be excluded, and stopovers and open jaws aren’t eligible for companion flights.
  • Blackout dates are subject to the rules of the primary ticket fare purchased.
  • The primary, paid ticket on the itinerary earns Delta SkyMiles , but the companion ticket does not.
  • Delta eCredits can be applied as payment toward the cost of the primary ticket, companion ticket, and any government-imposed taxes and fees.

Bottom Line: A Delta Companion Certificate allows you to purchase a second ticket on select domestic flights for only the price of the taxes and fees on the second ticket.

You can earn a Delta Companion Certificate simply by having the right Delta credit card in your wallet.

Delta Platinum American Express

American Express offers 4 co-branded personal Delta credit cards and 4 co-branded Delta business credit cards in total, but not all of them come with the Delta Companion Certificate.

The Delta Companion Certificate is only available with the following cards:

  • Delta SkyMiles ® Platinum American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles ® Platinum Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve Business American Express Card

The companion certificate varies slightly depending on what credit card you hold.

Delta Platinum Credit Cards [Personal and Business]

Both the Delta Platinum card and Delta Platinum Business card come with the companion ticket benefit. This perk offers 1 round-trip, Main Cabin companion ticket per year after you pay your annual fee. The Companion Certificate will be available for redemption in your renewal month.

You’re responsible for paying the taxes and fees on the companion ticket. The companion ticket is valid for L, U, T, X, and V classes of service only (these letters refer to different levels of economy fares ) and may not be available on all flights or in all markets. Both the first ticket and the fees for the second ticket must be charged to your Delta card.

Delta Reserve Credit Cards [Personal and Business]

If you have either the Delta Reserve card or the Delta Reserve Business card , you’re eligible for 1 round-trip, Main Cabin, Comfort+, or first class companion ticket per year after you pay your annual fee.

You’re responsible for paying the taxes and fees on the companion ticket. The companion ticket is valid for L, U, T, X, and V classes of service ( economy ) and I and Z classes of service ( first class ). For Delta Comfort+ travel, tickets are available in W and S classes of service, but only when L, U, T, X, OR V classes of service are available in the Main Cabin.

Both the first ticket and the fees for the second ticket must be charged to your Delta card and/or eCredits.

Bottom Line: A Delta Companion Certificate is a perk that comes with the personal and business versions of the Delta Platinum card and Delta Reserve card. If you aren’t sure which of these credit cards is right for you, check out this guide to the best credit cards for Delta flyers.

Your Delta Companion Certificate can only be used on Delta.com ; it can’t be used on Delta flights that are purchased on any other website.

Once you’re logged in to your account, you’ll be able to see your companion ticket in the My Profile section. There is also a SkyMiles Quick Link for View vouchers, eCredits, & Certificates that can get you there.

My Delta Account

From there, you can select your companion certificate and then search for flights as you normally would. The system should automatically filter out the flights that aren’t eligible for a companion certificate ticket.

There isn’t a price limit to the ticket you can purchase with your Delta Companion Certificate. So, the higher the price of the ticket, the more value you get from this perk.

Let’s say you and a friend want to travel from New York to Los Angeles for a long weekend, but the tickets are $500 each. While you might not want to spend $1,000 for this trip, with the Delta Companion Certificate, you can purchase both tickets for just $500 (plus the taxes and fees on the second ticket).

You can easily get hundreds of dollars of value from this 1 perk!

The Delta Companion Certificate is a great deal. This perk allows you to buy a second seat on a Delta flight for the price of the taxes and fees. That means you and your companion can fly for essentially the price of just 1 ticket!

The companion ticket is available as a perk on 4 Delta Amex credit cards: the Delta Platinum card , Delta Platinum Business card , Delta Reserve card , and Delta Reserve Business card .

All the tips and tricks you need to use Delta Upgrade Certificates in 2022

Benji Stawski

Among the various benefits of holding elite status with an airline is receiving complimentary upgrades, both automatically and with certificates you can apply to upcoming trips.

With Delta, Upgrade Certificates are reserved for upper-tier Delta Platinum and Diamond Medallion elites . These certificates have a higher priority than Medallion Complimentary Upgrades and may be requested and potentially even cleared at booking.

Today, we will look at the different types of Upgrade Certificates, how to earn them and how to redeem them.

Let's get started.

Sign-up for the TPG daily newsletter to get points and miles coverage like this delivered to your inbox.

Overview of Delta Upgrade Certificates

Delta offers two types of Upgrade Certificates: Regional Upgrade Certificates (RUCs) and Global Upgrade Certificates (GUCs).

RUCs are eligible for the same routes as Medallion Complimentary Upgrades — all Delta-operated domestic flights and select short-haul international flights. This includes all flights with First Class and domestic flights with the Delta One experience. GUCs, on the other hand, can be used for any Delta-operated flight and some partner airlines (more on that later).

Related: The ultimate guide to getting upgraded on Delta

delta travel certificate

Each Upgrade Certificate is for one-way travel. The certificate covers any stops you might have while getting from Point A to Point B, but will be considered redeemed even if your upgrade clears for just one portion of your itinerary.

In other words, if you're flying from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) via Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and your upgrade only clears for the one-hour hop from Chicago to Detroit, your certificate will still be considered used. Thankfully, you can avoid this by asking a Delta agent to prioritize one leg of your journey .

As of February 2022, each upgrade certificate is also only valid for moving up by one class of service . This means that those booked in Main Cabin or Comfort+ will be upgraded to Premium Select — Delta's version of premium economy — on three-cabin international flights (and will be placed on a Delta One waitlist 24 hours prior to departure). So, you'll need to book Premium Select to upgrade directly to Delta One — you can't apply two Upgrade Certificates for a double upgrade. This rule applies to both Delta and partner flights.

delta travel certificate

You can apply RUCs and GUCs to paid tickets, award tickets and Miles + Cash tickets on Delta-operated flights, Pay with Miles tickets, companion tickets and tickets booked as a part of a Delta Vacations package. This makes Delta more generous than American Airlines and United, as neither allows members to apply Upgrade Certificates to award tickets.

Delta's only major restriction is that you cannot apply an upgrade to a Basic Economy (E fare) ticket regardless of your Medallion status level. All other published Main Cabin and Delta Comfort+ fares are eligible.

Related: How to save money with an annual Delta companion ticket

While these certificates are not fully transferable to others, Delta will allow you to apply your RUC or GUC to a guest's ticket so long as he or she is traveling on the same flight with you. Even if you're booked on separate reservations (e.g., your company books your economy ticket, and you book your spouse's economy ticket later), you can use your Upgrade Certificates for both passengers. Just remember that each person requires a separate upgrade certificate.

Each certificate expires at the end of the elite year. So, if you earn Global Upgrade Certificates in 2022, they are valid through Jan. 31, 2024. Certificates must be used on a flight completed by that date, not just booked. In light of the pandemic, all certificates set to expire between March 1, 2019, and Jan. 31, 2022, have been extended until Jan. 31, 2023.

How to earn Delta Upgrade Certificates

Given how powerful Delta Upgrade Certificates can be, they're fairly exclusive. The only way to get them is by picking them as your " Choice Benefits ."

Choice Benefits are offered when hitting Delta Platinum and Diamond Medallion status . Top-tier Diamond Medallion members may choose any of the following three options as one of their selected Choice Benefits:

  • Four Global Upgrades.
  • Eight Regional Upgrades.
  • Two Global Upgrades and four Regional Upgrades.

Meanwhile, Platinum Medallion members may choose four Regional Upgrades as their single Choice Benefit.

Given that these certificates are typically valid for 12 months from the date they were issued, if you don't have an immediate use for them, you should wait as long as possible after earning Platinum or Diamond status to claim your Choice Benefits. The last possible day is always Jan. 31 of the following year.

Searching for upgrade availability

You can search for upgrade availability directly on Delta's website .

Log in and search for flights as you normally would. If you have Upgrade Certificates in your account, upgrade availability will be listed below the route and flight times.

delta travel certificate

If your itinerary has multiple segments, you can click on the text to check flight-specific availability.

delta travel certificate

As mentioned, certificates are now only valid for upgrading by one class of service and you can't apply two Upgrade Certificates for a double upgrade. On the flip side, those using GUCs to upgrade from Main Cabin to Premium Select have last-seat availability, which means you have access to any unsold seats.

How to apply Delta Upgrade Certificates

As of now, you can't yet apply Upgrade Certificates online yourself. Rather, you'll need to call Delta or contact the airline via its iMessage chat support and request that an agent applies one to your reservation. Unfortunately, gate agents cannot apply Upgrade Certificates at the airport. If a confirmed upgrade isn't available yet, you can request to be placed on a waitlist.

You may request to use your certificate up until three hours before departure, but the earlier, the better. On itineraries with connections, ask the agent to place upgrade priority on the leg that matters most to you so you don't let a Global Upgrade Certificate go to waste on a short domestic segment.

Delta does not always notify you that your upgrade has cleared, so keep a close eye on your itinerary.

If you're on a waitlist and your upgrade doesn't clear, your certificate will be redeposited into your online wallet for use until the original expiration date.

Using Delta Upgrade Certificates for partner flights

Upgrade Certificates can be used on any Delta-operated flight and select partner-operated flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air and Aeromexico. However, the exact rules vary by partner.

Aside from Air France and KLM, you typically need to book your partner flight through Delta for it to be eligible. With all airlines, you can only request an upgrade if it's confirmable — you cannot wait-list on partners. As with Delta flights, upgrades are only to the next level of service (i.e., economy to premium economy).

Related: The ultimate guide to Delta partners

You can upgrade most Aeromexico-operated flights so long as Delta sells them. Delta's published fares booked in W, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class upgrade to Aeromexico's business class (O class).

For Air France-operated flights sold by Delta, the following coach fare classes are eligible for an upgrade to premium economy (A class): Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V. Also, the following premium economy fares can be upgraded to business class (Z class): W, S or A.

If you're purchasing your flight directly from Air France, you can upgrade the following economy fare classes: Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R, or V. Or, the following premium economy fare classes: W, S, or A.

Upgrade Certificates are valid on Delta-marketed, KLM-operated flights on Main Cabin fares booked in Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class. If you're purchasing your ticket directly from KLM, you can upgrade Main Cabin fares in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R, or V class.

Global Upgrades on KLM flights must be confirmed 24 hours before departure.

Upgrades are valid for a select few Korean Air-operated flights sold by Delta. Fares booked in Y or B class upgrade to Korean Air's Z business class, or booked in M class to Korean Air's O business class.

Global Upgrades on Korean Air flights must be confirmed 24 hours before departure.

Virgin Atlantic

Upgrade Certificates bump you from economy to premium economy or premium economy to Upper Class (business class) on Virgin Atlantic. Delta-marketed, Virgin Atlantic-operated flights booked in W, S, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class upgrade to Premium Economy (P class) while fares booked in P, A or G class upgrade to Upper Class (G class).

Global Upgrades on Virgin Atlantic flights must be confirmed 24 hours before departure.

Bottom line

Despite a recent devaluation, Delta Upgrade Certificates are still highly valuable. Specifically, a Diamond Medallion applying a Global Upgrade Certificate is at the top of any waitlist for an upgrade. It can usually count on at least one seat not being sold on a long-haul flight. While you need to call to apply them to your reservations, you can easily search for upgrade availability online.

Secure a better seat: The ultimate guide to getting upgraded on Delta flights

D elta Air Lines' Medallion elite status has plenty of perks, including same-day confirmed changes, international lounge access and Choice Benefits . Still, one perk sits above all others when it comes to chasing status: the allure of a free seat upgrade.

There's nothing quite as magical as paying for one class of service and being upgraded into a superior cabin, be it premium economy, business class or first class. However, the upgrade process remains shrouded in mystery. For example, who is eligible for upgrades? When do these upgrades process?

From complimentary elite upgrades, SkyMiles upgrades and Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates to understanding the upgrade priority process, we're here to demystify it all. So, buckle up and keep reading to find out how you can snag a seat in the front of the Delta plane.

Complimentary Delta upgrades

All Delta Medallion elite members are eligible for day-of-departure unlimited complimentary upgrades to the Delta One experience on flights within the U.S., including flights to Hawaii.

While it pays to understand the intricacies below, it's worth mentioning that Delta is systematically selling more first-class tickets. Its revenue maximization models are pricing first-class tickets to encourage more people to buy them outright. Therefore, you may notice this when you view a Delta reservation and are offered a buy-up upgrade.

Unfortunately, the more first-class tickets Delta sells, the fewer are available for complimentary upgrades.

Below are the Delta products that are eligible for complimentary upgrades, including paid tickets, SkyMiles award tickets, Pay with Miles tickets and SkyMiles Companion Certificates:

  • Delta Comfort+ (typically offered on Delta-operated flights and select international flights)
  • First class (typically offered on Delta-operated domestic flights and flights to nearby destinations like the Caribbean and Central America)
  • Delta One (typically offered on long-haul international flights and certain cross-country domestic flights)

Delta's top-tier Medallions (Diamond) get preference over lower-tier Medallions, and timing is everything. Diamond and Platinum Medallion members can immediately clear from Main Cabin into Comfort+ upon booking if space is available. At the same time, Gold members must wait until 72 hours before departure to clear into Comfort+, and Silver members must wait until 24 hours before departure.

For flights with heavy passenger loads — from New York to San Francisco, for example — the Comfort+ cabin is often full when Gold and Silver Medallions are eligible to clear. However, last-minute upgrades at the gate can happen.

Related: Delta Medallion status: What it is and how to earn it

For Delta One domestic upgrades, Medallion members will clear on the day of departure following the same clearance priority hierarchy as with first-class upgrades, subject to upgrade availability.

Even if your upgrade doesn't clear in advance, you may still clear at the gate. If an upgrade is still not confirmed at your upgrade window or when you check in, your pending upgrade request will automatically be added to the airport standby list for a potential upgrade at the gate before you board. You may view your spot on the standby list in the "My Trips" section of the Delta app and at the gate information display at the airport.

Medallion members are also eligible for complimentary upgrades on Aeromexico-operated flights within Mexico and between Mexico and the U.S., Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia and Ecuador. Upgrades are available to all ticketed passengers except those seated in basic economy. Medallion members can be upgraded to Premier on Aeromexico flights but not AM Plus. Once a SkyMiles number is added to an eligible Aeromexico reservation, Medallion members will automatically be added to the upgrade list.

Complimentary upgrade hierarchy

Here's how Delta will determine your spot on the upgrade list:

  • Medallion status
  • Fare class groupings — higher-priced fares are ranked above lower-priced fares per the following order: B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X and V, then SkyMiles award tickets, then Pay with Miles
  • Million Miler status
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card holders
  • Delta corporate travelers (ticket must include your employer's corporate ticket designator)
  • Medallion Qualification Dollars earned in the current calendar year
  • Date and time of upgrade request

Related: Earn more SkyMiles with these current Delta Amex credit card welcome bonuses

If two members are identical at a given level, it goes down the above list until the tie is broken. For instance, if two Platinum Medallion members are traveling on K-fare tickets and one has a Delta Reserve credit card and the other does not, the card-holding passenger will be prioritized.

Diamond and Platinum Medallion members will clear first-class upgrades beginning 120 hours (or five days) before departure. Gold Medallion members will clear beginning 72 hours (three days) before departure, and Silver Medallion members will clear beginning 24 hours (one day) before departure, subject to upgrade availability.

It's also worth noting that upgrade certificates ( Regional Upgrade Certificates and Global Upgrade Certificates ) and upgrades with miles are prioritized ahead of these complimentary upgrades.

Exclusions and fine print on Delta upgrades

Unfortunately, not all tickets are eligible for complimentary upgrades — here's what's excluded:

  • Basic economy (E) fares are not eligible for paid or Medallion complimentary upgrades, regardless of Medallion or other elite status.
  • Delta Premium Select fares are not eligible for a complimentary Medallion upgrade outside of the U.S.
  • Delta One seats on flights that start or end outside of the U.S. do not qualify for a complimentary Medallion upgrade.
  • Complimentary upgrades are not available for selection by any passenger while aboard the aircraft, regardless of status or fare class.
  • Except for eligible Pay with Miles tickets and eligible award tickets, complimentary upgrades are not available on basic economy fares.
  • Companions who change their itinerary and no longer travel with the higher-tiered Medallion after the change are not eligible for a complimentary upgrade at the higher-tiered member's clearance window. If an upgrade were confirmed before the itinerary change, a reservation for a companion without Medallion status would be changed to reflect the original class of service for the new itinerary, and they would no longer be eligible for a complimentary upgrade. If the companion is a Medallion member, the reservation will be changed to reflect the original class of service. It will continue to be eligible for an upgrade at the companion's own clearance priority. If the Medallion or partner airline elite member is no longer traveling on their original reservation, the companion traveling on the original reservation will no longer be eligible for complimentary Delta Comfort+ seating. Their Delta Comfort+ seat assignment may be removed.

Improving your chances of a Delta upgrade

Beyond racing for a higher tier of Delta's Medallion status, you can better your chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade by opening a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card . These cards also net you 15 visits per year (effective Feb. 1, 2025) to Delta's global network of Sky Club airport lounges . To earn an unlimited number of visits each year, the total eligible purchases on the card must equal $75,000 or more between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and each calendar year thereafter.

If possible, consider booking a corporate ticket through your employer. Also, if you're a Platinum/Diamond Medallion with free same-day change abilities, you can sniff around and change to a less popular route on your day of departure. ExpertFlyer — owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures — is an excellent tool for searching flights. You can use the "Flight Availability" functionality to understand how many seats remain open/unsold.

You'll often have a better shot at an upgrade if you avoid peak business travel periods. This lets you compete with fewer frequent flyers. Generally, this means avoiding flying on Sunday night, Monday morning and pretty much all day Friday if you want to sidestep top-tier business travelers.

Delta upgrade certificates

Delta offers two types of dedicated upgrade certificates, known as Global Upgrade Certificates and Regional Upgrade Certificates . The only way to get them is to earn Platinum or Diamond Medallion status and select them using your Choice Benefits .

Upgrade certificates have a higher priority than complimentary upgrades and may be requested and, subject to availability, cleared when you book your ticket. In other words, they're a hyper-exclusive and extremely powerful way to sit in the front of the plane.

GUCs, available exclusively for Diamond Medallion members, offer upgrades on both international and domestic flights with Delta, along with select flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air and Aeromexico. RUCs, available for Diamond and Platinum Medallion members, offer upgrades on the same routes as complimentary upgrades, including all flights with first class and the domestic Delta One experience.

Related: The ultimate guide to Delta Choice Benefits

As a Choice Benefits selection, Diamond Medallion members may choose any of the following three options:

  • Four global upgrades
  • Eight regional upgrades
  • Two global upgrades and four regional upgrades

Platinum Medallion members may choose four regional upgrades as their single Choice Benefits selection.

So if you want one of the coveted GUCs, you'll need first to achieve Diamond status, Delta's highest published Medallion tier.

These certificates only offer confirmed upgrades for one cabin higher than originally purchased. Main Cabin tickets will upgrade to Premium Select on flights with a Premium Select cabin. Then, the elite member processing the upgrade will be placed on a Delta One upgrade waitlist 24 hours before departure. The good news is that there will be last-seat upgrade availability in Premium Select on international flights. Likewise, last-seat availability will be when you use your GUC to upgrade to a domestic flight, even on Delta One routes.

An RUC or GUC is for one-way travel, so you'd need to burn four to take you and a guest on a round-trip itinerary. You can apply an RUC or GUC to a paid ticket, a SkyMiles award ticket, a Pay with Miles ticket and a companion ticket. Crucially, you cannot apply an RUC or a GUC to a basic economy (E fare) ticket, regardless of your Medallion status level.

While these certificates are not fully transferable to others, Delta will allow you to apply your RUC or GUC to a guest's ticket if that person is traveling on the same flight as you. Even if you're booked on separate reservations (e.g., your company books your economy ticket, and you book your spouse's economy ticket later), you can use your upgrade certificates for both passengers.

Each GUC or RUC will expire at the end of the Medallion Year that was associated with the Choice Benefits selection. Each certificate may be used to upgrade flights operated by Delta Air Lines or Delta Connection booked in the P, A, G, W, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V fare classes, and may also be used to upgrade on SkyMiles awards, Pay with Miles tickets and companion certificates.

Upgrading on Delta partner flights with certificates

You can also use GUCs to upgrade select partner flights. GUCs applied to Air France and Virgin Atlantic flights will only move you from economy to premium economy unless you book a premium economy ticket outright. Note that all partner upgrades must be confirmed 24 hours before departure.

These are the rules for upgrading partner-operated flights:

Upgrading KLM flights

  • Delta-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Main Cabin seats booked in Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V to Z class (business class). This is because KLM does not offer a premium economy cabin on many flights.
  • KLM-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to Z (business class).
  • Air France-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to Z class (business class).
  • For flights departing Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), Global Upgrade Certificates must be applied prior to check-in with a KLM ticketing agent or at a KLM Crown Lounge.

Upgrading Air France flights

  • Air France-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class).
  • KLM-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class).
  • Delta-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class), or from P, A or G class to Z class (business class).

Upgrading Virgin Atlantic flights

  • Delta-marketed, Virgin Atlantic-operated flights: Economy seats booked in W, S, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to P class (premium economy), or from P, A or G class to Virgin Atlantic's G class (business class).

Upgrading Aeromexico flights

  • Delta-marketed, Aeromexico-operated flights: Economy seats booked in W, S, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to O class (business class).

Upgrading Korean Air flights

  • Delta-marketed, Korean-operated flights: Seats booked in J class can be upgraded to Korean Air's A class, Y or B class booked can be upgraded to Z class, or if you're booked in M class, you can be upgraded to Korean Air's O class.

How to use a Delta upgrade certificate

Until recently, you had to call to apply a GUC or an RUC to a Delta-operated ticket. Now, you only have to do this for existing tickets, as new tickets can be upgraded online.

Upgrading a new Delta booking with a certificate

Delta allows you to upgrade new bookings online (but not on the Fly Delta app). You'll see the option to upgrade your ticket with a GUC or an RUC on the checkout page.

Look for the "Upgrade Certificate Request" box and select the flight you'd like to upgrade. Then, select the type of upgrade certificate you'd like to use.

The upgrade certificate will be automatically applied when you complete your booking.

Upgrading an existing Delta booking with a certificate

For existing bookings, you must dial the phone number given with your associated Medallion tier or the general hotline at 800-323-2323 and make the request. Be sure to call at least three hours before departure to apply your certificate, though 24 hours before departure is strongly recommended.

If you want to confirm an upgrade immediately, search for your flight on the Delta website. Upgrade availability is shown underneath the flight times. Make sure you're logged in to your Delta account, as upgrade availability only shows on elite accounts.

If you can avoid waitlisting, do so. Waitlist upgrades are not guaranteed to clear, and they're known to rarely clear on particular routes — such as West Coast gateways to Hawaii.

On itineraries with connections, ask the Delta agent to place upgrade priority on the leg that matters most to you. If you don't clarify this, upgrades can clear on relatively unimportant/short legs while you remain waitlisted on the long leg. The upgrade certificate is considered used if you don't prioritize the hard-to-get leg and the upgrade clears on any other leg of your itinerary.

For example, you don't want to burn a valuable GUC on a 45-minute domestic positioning leg when the leg that matters is the long-haul ride from the U.S. to Europe, Asia, Oceania, etc. Remember, there's no way to "undo" an upgrade clearing. Once it's burned, it's burned.

While upgrade requests on the waitlist can be cleared before you get to the gate, it is more likely that they will be cleared at the gate before departure. If your certificate doesn't clear, it will be automatically reissued to your account and can be used on a future flight.

Delta SkyMiles mileage upgrades

While we typically recommend storing up SkyMiles until you can exchange them for a true award ticket, that's not always practical for infrequent flyers. Delta allows its passengers to upgrade their existing tickets with SkyMiles regardless of status.

You can use Delta's Upgrade with Miles feature to upgrade to Delta One, Delta Premium Select, first-class or Delta Comfort+ for eligible flights. If your reservation is eligible for an upgrade, you'll see the option to upgrade in your trip summary.

Delta typically prices mileage upgrades by placing a value of roughly 1.07 cents on each SkyMile. In other words, if Delta is charging $60 for a particular seat upgrade, it'll also allow you to part ways with roughly 5,600 SkyMiles to achieve the same upgrade. Just note that you may be able to achieve marginally higher value by booking an award ticket outright.

Buy-up upgrades can also come in handy if you're chasing elite status. You'll earn Medallion Qualification Dollars on the cash or SkyMiles you spend on an upgrade, boosting you toward the next status tier. If you use SkyMiles to upgrade, you'll earn MQDs on the award ticket based on the cash amount of the ticket purchased, excluding taxes and fees.

Bottom line

Getting upgraded for "free" is a glorious thing, and you can better your chances by climbing Delta's Medallion elite ranks and holding a Delta SkyMiles Reserve card or Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business card . You'll also be wise to choose flights that aren't during peak business travel periods, and if there's a connection involved, avoid Delta's largest hubs like Atlanta, Minneapolis, New York (LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport) and Los Angeles.

Using a stash of SkyMiles to upgrade can be a great way to boost your flight experience. Still, you'll want to think carefully before using Upgrade with Miles — Delta will only allow you to extract roughly 1.07 cents per SkyMile via this method.

Upgrade certificates are the most exciting option, but you must reach Platinum or Diamond status to secure them. If you're fortunate enough to have a few in your account, you can strategically plan a dream trip, pay cash for an OK seat and fly there in a great seat.
