Springtime in New York is warm and sunny. So, it’s an ideal time to discover the sights and sounds of the city. That’s not to say that you won’t see any crowds – the tourist hotspots will still be busy.

But, if you enjoy cycling through the park or a good walking tour then the weather is perfect for this kind of activity, with the city being a lot quieter than in the summer.

2. Exciting Events

There are many exciting NYC events in May that will make your visit extra special. So, between the food festivals, art exhibitions, and Memorial Day weekend, you’re sure to go home with memories of a very special trip.

3. Hotel Prices are still Reasonable

The New York temperature starts to rise in May, and hotel prices also start rising. But, there are still some great deals to be found, especially if you can book ahead for your May visit to New York.

Remember that there are some big national holidays in May, and prices will be steeper during the Memorial Day long weekend.

Additionally, areas like Midtown and Times Square are more popular and will have a price tag that reflects that.

But, if you look in alternative areas, like Long Island City, then you can find some great deals with great transportation into and out of Manhattan.

After all, New York is always a fascinating city to visit at any time of year. So, you’ll definitely want to do some classic, NYC bucket list activities like visiting Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty , watching the sun rise from the top of the Empire State Building, or going window shopping on Fifth Avenue.

But, you’ll also find that there are some things you can only do if you visit New York in May.

So, here are 10 of the very best things to do in May in New York.

1. Visit New York City Parks

May is a beautiful time of year to explore the 1700+ parks of New York City. After all, both the trees and flowers are in full bloom, and everything looks fantastic.

If you can, head to Central Park in May to enjoy a picnic by one of the park’s lakes before visiting the outdoor bar for cocktails and renting a rowboat on the Lake at 72nd street (head to Loeb Boathouse near Bethesda Fountain).

You can also book a cycle tour or rent bikes for a fun and affordable way to explore this 843 acre park.

2. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) marks the date that Mexico defeated the French army in the Battle of Puebla, and it’s a major celebration in the USA.

And in case you didn’t know, New York has the largest Latino population of any US city (more than 2 million people), so it’s a great place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

As a result, there’s usually a big Cinco de Mayo parade in New York on one of the weekends before or after the 5th. Plus, restaurants usually get really busy around this event, so book in advance if possible.

This is also a fantastic opportunity to enjoy delicious Mexican foods, like tostadas and empanadas, before drinking margaritas in one of the city’s bars and dancing the night away with your friends.

3. Spoil Mom on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in the USA, and a trip to NYC is a great way to show your Mom just how much she means to you.

So, you’ll find traditional Mother’s Day brunches on offer around the city, and you can spoil Mom with a shopping trip after brunch in NYC .

Or, combine a Mother’s day brunch with a visit to one of the city’s Botanical Gardens, which will be a floral paradise at this time of the year.

Memorial Day is one of the most important holidays in the US, and it is marked on the last weekend of May.

After all, this special day honors all US military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

And New York City pays tribute to these fallen heroes with parades in each of the city’s five boroughs.

But, Little Neck-Douglaston parade in Queens is the largest Memorial Day parade in the nation, while the oldest Memorial Day parade in NYC is Brooklyn’s Memorial Day Parade starting at 78th Street and Third Avenue.

And then there’s Manhattan, which has a smaller parade that starts at Dyckman Street and Broadway.

Fleet Week New York is a seven-day celebration of the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, coinciding with Memorial Day.

So, navy ships dock for a week at the New York Passenger Ship Terminal on the Hudson River, and you can even take guided tours of these vessels at certain times.

Now, the week kicks off with the Parade of Ships, which sees tall ships and other visiting vessels enter New York Harbor from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

So, be sure to head to New York Harbor, Battery Park, or Hudson River Park for the best views of the parade.

The Highline is a park that runs along a decommissioned freight line along Manhattan’s Westside.

There’s also an average of nine days of rain in New York in May. This will usually just be scattered showers, but be prepared for 2-3 days of heavy rain that the city sees each May.

Overall, though, New York weather in May is pretty mild, making it an ideal month to visit NYC.

What to Wear in New York in May

The New York weather in May can be quite variable, and the temperature can feel quite cool at times. So, light layers are still a good idea.

Long pants and long-sleeve tops will also be the best option when packing for a visit to New York in early May.

But, if your visit to New York falls at the end of the month, you might need to add shorts and t-shirts to your packing list for New York .

This post lists the top things to do in New York in May, updated for 2024.

May is a lovely time of year in New York City. Spring is fully here, and the city is alive with activity.

Layers aren't needed any longer as the weather has finally turned a corner and it's comfortable outside during the day.

Daytime temps tend to be in the mid-60s early in the month, and the low to mid-70s by the end of the month.

A jacket would be good for the evenings, which tend to be in the mid to high 40s early in the month, and the mid to high 50s late in the month.

It's not a bad idea to pack a small umbrella in your bag as there are around 11 days when rainfall can be expected.

Keep in mind that Memorial Day, a public holiday  falls on the last Monday in May and some activities may be affected.

1. Enjoy a Broadway Show

There will be several great Broadway musicals in New York City this month.

While there aren't many new productions, you will be able to see some of the most popular shows of the last few years.

2. Attend a Concert

Many amazing performers come through New York City and its surrounding cities.

Whether you're a fan of hard rock, pop music, or even classic 80s tunes, there are plenty of great concerts to be found in the NYC area this May.

3. See a Sporting Event 

In May, baseball is in full swing and the New York Liberty, the national women's basketball team comes to town. There are several soccer matches as well.

Going to a sports event is a great way to spend an evening in New York City . It is also a family-friendly activity !

4. Eat Your Fill at the 9th Avenue International Food Festival

Every May, since 1973, international food vendors and entertainers have lined 9th Avenue between 42nd and 57th Street in Hell's Kitchen . 

In 2024, it takes place May 19th - 21st from 10 am to 6 pm. The festival is free to attend, but the food isn't. It is, however, pretty cheap!

5. Take a  Walking Tour 

May is one of the best months to take a walking tour as the weather is lovely - both day and night.

6. Take Part in Fleet Week at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

Fleet Week is a time to celebrate America's men and women of our forces at sea as they arrive in NYC for a week of fun.

In 2024, Fleet Week runs from May 23th - 28th.

During this event, you'll be able to tour all sorts of sea vessels used by the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Find out more information here .

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum typically hosts several special events like watching a movie on the flight deck or enjoying a night of swing dance.

There are many deals available for tickets to the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.

The Intrepid is also included in many tourist passes .

8. Get Free Tickets with A Tourist Pass

Though these passes are not cheap, they can save you a lot of money in the end. If you plan well, you will essentially get several tickets to attractions or tours each day for free.

Tourist passes work by bundling multiple tickets into one price, usually between 20%-50% of the retail price.

9. Enjoy Even More Events

There is no shortage of things to do in New York. Below are just some of the events that are on tap for May

Frieze New York | May 1st-5th

This international art fair takes place at The Shed in Manhattan.

New York Empire State Tattoo Expo | May 10th-12th

Over 500 tattoo artists gather at the New York Hilton Midtown for live tattooing, seminars, and workshops.

Japan Parade | May 11th

Both a parade and street fair take place in celebration of Japanese culture. There will be food, art, manga, and more.

NYC X Design Festival | May 16th - 23rd

Over 250 events take place throughout the city celebrating NYC's design talent in areas such as graphic design, television, film, urban design, architecture, fashion, and more

Dance Parade New York | May 18th

Over 10,000 dancers gather to perform, for the 18th year, over 100 styles of dance in a parade. It ends with a festival in Tompkins Square Park.

B.I.G. Salsa Festival | May 24th-27th

This is the place to go for all things Salsa dancing! Dancers, DJs, and classes take place at the New York Hilton Midtown.

Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade | May 27th

For 157 years this parade has taken place in Brooklyn. It ends with a memorial service in John Paul Jones Park.

10. Attend the Metropolitan Opera

The world-famous Metropolitan Opera will be performing multiple shows throughout the month of May.

This provides fans of the theater with an excellent opportunity to see some of the best operatic tales of all time.

Experience the New York Philharmonic

If you're more interested in classical music you'll be happy to hear that the New York Philharmonic will have several shows in May.

Depending on which show you choose to attend, you can expect to hear the work of master composers in both older pieces (such The Mozart Requiem) and newer productions (such as ET. The Extra-Terrestrial in Concert).

If you want to skip the meal, there are also hop-on-hop-off ferries that let you enjoy both the sights from the water and on the land.

See a Free Concert, Movie, or Theater Performance

Towards the end of May, the spirit of summer breaks out in the city and many of the summer-long music, theater, and movie series begins.

In the evenings you can catch a free concert during Central Park at Summerstage , watch a free performance of Shakespeare in the Park , or see a free movie outdoors . 

Take a Night Tour

Warm and comfortable evenings mean nighttime sightseeing is something to consider.

Take a Sunset Walk Over the Brooklyn Bridge 

You can walk over the bridge any time you want but a sunset stroll is especially beautiful.

The weather in May is quite comfortable for a night stroll on this historic bridge.

FREE THINGS TO DO IN MAY

Visit Little Island

There is nothing like this 2.4-acre park that you have ever seen. It is perched atop 132 concrete pillars that protrude from the Hudson River. The stacks resemble "tulip pots" the best.

As high as 62 feet above the Hudson River, some of the "tulip pots" provide breathtaking vistas of New York and New Jersey.

Green lawns, gentle slopes, and twisting paths make up the varied scenery. There are numerous varieties of plants and flowers in the park.

Moreover, there are two performance venues: the smaller Glade and the 700-seat Amphitheater. Free or affordable tickets are available for performances.

Temporarily Suspended: Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit

The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit is a New York perennial favorite event.

On Memorial Day Weekend the streets surrounding Washington Square Park become mini art galleries of artists and craft artisans from around the world.

It’s a great place to purchase wonderful artwork at very affordable prices.

Go Kayaking 

This may be the least expected activity you pictured yourself doing here. But you will not be disappointed by this free and fun activity.

There are many boat houses that offer free kayaking, usually for short amounts of time. Others offer longer excursions, which are also free. Most are open by May 1st.

Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo is a traditional annual Mexican celebration always celebrated on May 5th. 

NYC celebrates with a parade that takes place along Central Park West between 97th-106th St.

Before or after the parade, you can head into Central Park and explore the beautiful green spaces.

Visit Governors Island 

On May 1st, Governors Island, a small, recreational, vehicle-free island just 7 minutes by ferry from Lower Manhattan, opens for the summer season.

You can rent bikes, kayak for free, picnic, visit the various playgrounds, and try out the longest slide in NYC — three stories high and 57 feet long.

This is a very family-friendly place to visit!

Go to Fleet Week Events

Fleet Week is a time to celebrate America's men and women of our forces at sea as they arrive in NYC for a week of free fun!

During this event, you and your family can tour all sorts of sea vessels used by the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. 

There will be a Parade of Ships on the Hudson River. You can get the best views from Battery Park .

See a Special Exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History

Any of the exhibits should be engaging for children.

Kids would enjoy The Secret World of Elephants science exhibit which covers both modern and ancient elephants.

The world's "most advanced planetarium projection system" has a Worlds Beyond Earth show.

There are also immersive experiences and films on an ongoing basis. It's truly a lot of fun!

Take a Carriage Ride in Central Park

In May, Central Park's trees and flowers are blooming and a carriage ride through the park is an unforgettable way to enjoy the beauty of spring.

This guide will cover some of the best things to do in New York City in May. From great things to see in the spring to fun events taking place in the month like Harry Potter Day (yes, that’s a thing), Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day, enjoying all the rooftops the city has to offer, and other fun and exciting things going during the month of May in NYC.

New York in May Weather

New York in May is just the best. The parks are buzzing with life and in full vibrant color. The beaches are back and New Yorkers and tourists alike are ready to enjoy just about everything there is to do in New York in May because they’ve gotten over the back-and-forth weather patterns of April in NYC .

On average the NYC weather in May is in the 70s (22C) during the day and 55 (12C) at night. It can still rain, averaging 7-9 days of rain and 20 beautiful sunny days!

Packing for New York weather in May is a bit easier because you don’t need to bring as many puffy jackets that take up a bulk of the space in your suitcase.

Things to do in NYC in May

Cinco de mayo.

Did you know, Cinco de Mayo IS NOT Mexican Independence Day? Instead, it celebrates the day the Mexican army defeated the French in Puebla de Los Angeles, known as the Battle of Puebla . That happened because one of the most hated short dudes in history, Napoleon III, tried to take advantage of Mexico while the country was being forced to default on debt payments to Europe. He sent 6,000 troops to lay siege on a small town called Puebla. The president of Mexico at the time, Benito Juárez, rallied a ragtag group of 2,000 men and held them off. The win was symbolic and political pressure and with the number of casualties, the French had they withdrew.

We mention this because a lot of people really don’t know what Cinco De Mayo is, always on the 5th of May, and use it as an excuse to appropriate Mexican culture. While this is a minor holiday in Mexico, there are a few celebrations of Mexican people and their culture here in New York City in May.

While you can find celebrations happening all over the city, one of the most famous celebrations in the annual Cinco De Mayo Parade in Sunset Park, Brooklyn which goes down 5th Avenue and you’ll be able to see dancers, and musicians, and eat some really great food!

More options in Manhattan include the Cinco De Mayo Street Fair near Grand Central Terminal and the 116th Street Cinco De Mayo Festival which includes more live music and tons of food!

And if you want to use the holiday to support Mexican-owned eateries, head to the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Flatbush, and Bushwick in Brooklyn, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights in Queens, or Spanish Harlem in Manhattan which have large populations of Mexican-Americans and no shortage of incredible locally-owned eateries to support!

Mother’s Day in NYC

What better way to show your mom your appreciation than spending it somewhere in style in NYC? Literally, the world is your oyster just be sure to plan this one in advance. RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST. Most restaurants will go all out in decor and offer all kinds of discounts and fun unique things for the occasion.

Mother’s Day in NYC is also a perfect excuse to go see that Broadway show you’ve wanted to see (or gift tickets to a future show) or enjoy a scenic dinner cruise and soak in the views from the water.

Or want to pamper mom? Send her to the incredible QC NY Day Spa on Governor’s Island which has multiple themed saunas, steam baths, and relaxation rooms plus outdoor heated pools and dining all with skyline views of Lower Manhattan! We all know that moms deserve a little R&R and pampering!

MOTHER’S DAY FRIENDLY TOURS & EXPERIENCES TO TRY IN MAY

Mother’s Day is always a great excuse to create a new memory with your Mom. So why not try something you’ve both never done before, but don’t have to plan too much.

One World Observatory – Take Mom up to the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the 7th tallest building in the world! Not only do you get 360-views of NYC and its surrounding, you also have a chance to dine or enjoy a drink at the     Also, don’t forget to make a reservation at ONE Dine, which is easily one of the most unique dining experiences in the city! You’ll need a reservation though so don’t forget that!

Try a Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner cruise as already mentioned above for Mom! Spend 2 or 3 hours, depending on the tour you choose, enjoying the sweeping views of the New York Harbor while dining in style aboard a classy European style dining vessel where you’ll take in views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and of course the skyline!

Little Italy Food Tour – Is mom a foodie? One of the most fun and interactive tours you can check out are food tours! Not only do you learn the history and ins and outs of the neighborhood you’re exploring, which Little Italy has no shortage of culture, history, and great food – you’ll also get to sample amazing food from the best eateries in the neighborhood! Come hungry and with good walking shoes!

Manhattanhenge

For some amazing reason, two times each year the sun sets in such a way that it perfectly aligns between the skyscrapers. It’s amazing, and so many people show up to see the sunset event in May and again July, but it varies year after year. (The sunrise events usually happen in December and January).

This year you get a half sun on May 29th, and a full sun Manhattanhenge on May 30th at approximately 8:14 pm.

We owe this exciting event to John Randel Jr, who in 1811 proposed the streets of NYC be built in a perfect grid system which is the reason it lines up the way it does.

Best viewing spots of Manhattanhenge :

Because of NYC’s awesome grid, thanks again John, there are 5 places that are perfect for viewing Manhattan Henge. They are:

• 14th Street
• 23rd Street
• 35th Street
• 42nd Street (our biased opinion is the Tudor city bridge on 42nd and United Nations Plaza is the absolute best of the best.
• 57th Street

Just know you need to get to any and all of these locations AT LEAST 30 minutes before the glorious event. You’ve been warned.

National Burger Day 

You might be asking yourself, why the h-e double hockey sticks is this a thing? Because why not is why. But most likely because hamburgers are an American staple linked to summertime cookouts and beach picnics!

Each year on May 28th you can use National Burger Day to cook out at parks with barbeques like Prospect Park in Brooklyn or hit up one of the insanely great burger spots in the city!

So why not join the fun and use it as an excuse to have a cookout and make your favorite burger during May in New York? Or go and get one because a lot of restaurants will have discounts and promos to get a slice of the action.

Rooftop Films

If you are anything like us you are so excited about the weather during May in NYC that you just can’t wait to go visit as many rooftops as you can. One of our favorite ways to get those city views and share a fun memory is going to see a movie on a rooftop.

These aren’t always on a roof but they do get scattered around the city which is really fun to see a new vantage point of the city. Check out Rooftop Films schedule.

Rooftop Films is known for showing independent films, often on their screening night with special guests! Our favorite location we’ve ever seen one of their films are when they premiere at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn !

All of their venues are pretty cool though, so be sure to check them out and don’t miss that during your May in NYC (or all summer long!).

Pizza & Wine Movie Nights at Rooftop Reds

What’s better than sharing some pizza, wine, and a movie with a loved one or friends? Doing it on a roof! Not to be confused with Rooftop Films, but Rooftop Reds, one of the best rooftop bars in Brooklyn , does a series during the late spring and summer in Navy Yard that offers some of our favorite views of the city along with a movie!

Kicking off in May, this is without a doubt one of the best things to do in NYC in May! Rooftop Reds is actually the city’s only rooftop vineyard! This winery partners with a vineyard in Finger Lakes Wine Country in Upstate New York to bring wine country right here to the city.

So while you’re enjoying a movie, you can also enjoy a wine tasting or carafe made right here in the good ol’ state of New York!

NYC Rooftop Hopping

Like the idea of rooftops but don’t want to commit to a movie? We get it. In those times we try to find a great rooftop to try and unwind and soak in some city views at eye level. With so many amazing rooftop bars in NYC , you can’t go wrong with really any of them.

If it’s your first time and you’re looking for great skyline views, check out 230 Fifth Rooftop, Westlight at the William Vale, or the Refinery Rooftop.

Celebrate Harry Potter Day 

Whether you’re a muggle, witch, wizard, or warlock you can celebrate the Potterverse on May 2nd, which is Harry Potter Day. In NYC there is no shortage of Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts things to check out!

If you haven’t already, consider visiting the official Harry Potter Store on Broadway to try butterbeer, buy a wand, clothes, or one of their many VR experiences. Be sure to enter the virtual line though so you’re not standing around waiting to get in too long, and even if it doesn’t look like there’s a line, chances are there is.

If you don’t feel like waiting in line (or dealing with any queues), try to make an appointment and learn from a craft potion maker and enjoy making your own cocktails at the Cauldron Co.

Of course, armchair wizards and witches can find out which house they’d belong in and use the day to binge-watch their favorite Movie series.

Catch a Playoff Basketball Game

If you’re a basketball fan then you’re in luck, you have two great choices for basketball in NYC in May!

If the Knicks are in the playoffs, then it doesn’t get any more iconic than a playoff game at Madison Square Garden. It’s the mecca for the basketball experience.

If you’re staying in Brooklyn or more a fan of the Nets. Then Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn is another great choice to catch the Nets as they are one of the best teams in the NBA, and our favorite team but we might be biased you are reading this at your BROOKLYN guide.

Check Out Fleet Week

Fleet Week is a week-long annual celebration that honors the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps by having parties, special events,  and military demonstrations that typically takes place during the last week of May in NYC. You can even visit some boats and talk with members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Free Admission to The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

Piggybacking on the Fleet Week it only seems right to also let you know you know you can visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum for free one Friday every month. The museum is dedicated to the interpretation of history, science, and servicemen and is on the National Historic Landmark aircraft carrier called Intrepid.

It’s located at Pier 86 off West 46th Street on the Hudson River and you can find more info here to plan your visit.

Memorial Day

Celebrate japanese culture on japan day.

One of the newer events in New York and things to do in NYC in May is celebrating the official Japan Day by attending the Japan Day Parade along Central Park West (starting uptown between 81st and 67th Streets from 1 to 3:30 PM).

This cultural event in May was meant to kick off in 2020 to celebrate and commemorate the 160th anniversary of the first visit to the US by Japanese delegates. It also was originally going to coincide with the 2020 Tokto Olympic and Paralympic Games, but due to health and safety concerns amid the pandemic in 2020, it was canceled and the first parade finally took place in May of 2022.

After the parade head to West 72nd Street (between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West) for the Japan Street Fair where you’ll find Japanese food vendors and other fun cultural activities like origami and fun photo spots.

To keep on celebrating Japanese culture you can also head to New York City’s only Japan Village at Industry City in Brooklyn which not only has a Japanese market and food hall, but Japanese murals and shops that are located on the upper level.

1. eat at the ninth avenue int’l food festival.

The Ninth Avenue International Food Festival is a must-do thing in NYC in May if you’re a foodie. This food festival, which is the oldest and largest of its kind in New York City, features more than 200 local vendors offering foods from all across the world. 

In addition to dining through the booths for the two-day event, you can also enjoy live music, dancing, and a children’s pavilion for fun for your little one.

2. Go to the NYCxDESIGN Festival

Every May in New York City, NYCxDESIGN brings about a festival that focuses on all things design, from architecture to landscaping to graphic design. With more than 260 events throughout all five boroughs across eight days, you’ll join thousands of other design enthusiasts as you listen to experts, check out exhibits, and attend unique parties celebrating the many facets of design.

3. See Cherry Blossoms at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Seeing the cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of the best things to do in NYC in spring. Come May, the bloom will be coming to its end, but the botanic garden keeps the party going throughout the month.

Although the garden’s annual Sakura Matsuri spring festival appears to be no more, past years have brought about a new event: Weekends in Bloom. From 2007 to 2019, May in NYC meant the return of Japan Day @ Central Park. Sadly, this celebration of Japanese culture was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it would thankfully return, albeit with a new look.

Japan Day @ Central Park is now the annual Japan Parade & Street Fair . Marvel at the beauty of the parade, which features celebrations of both traditional and modern Japanese culture, from taiko performers to bon-odori dancers. 

After the parade, head to the street fair to enjoy eats and treats from local vendors and family-friendly activities that will immerse you in stories from the Japanese-American community in NYC.

5. Chow Down at Smorgasburg

If you’re looking to eat your way around the city, Smorgasburg is a must-do thing in spring in NYC. This outdoor food festival is the largest weekly open-air food market in the US, featuring foods from dozens of local vendors. Whether you want the fluffiest pancake you’ve ever seen, mouthwatering bao buns, or lemonade with a maple-filled twist, you’ll find all that and more at Smorgasburg. 

Smorgasburg has three locations around New York City, with its World Trade Center location happening on Fridays, Williamsburg on Saturdays, and Prospect Park on Sundays.

The Bryant Park Winter Village has been a staple of NYC’s holiday scene for over two decades, but 2023 marked the first spring Makers Market . Hosted by Urbanspace, the Makers Market featured over 100 local artisans in pop-up booths over the course of three weekends in May.

10. Go Roller Skating at Rockefeller Center

Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace , which got its start back in the ‘70s in West Hollywood, was revived in 2022 at Rockefeller Center, creating a space for guests to get their groove on at the famous rink during the springtime! The quickest way to travel around, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from as low as $2.75 per ride, with stops usually every 8-10 blocks.

If the top taxi number is illuminated it's available, minimum metered fare is $2.50, which increases 50 cents every fifth of a mile or every minute.

Visitors new to New York are often surprised to learn that there are over 1,700 green spaces called parks located across the five boroughs. Central Park, the granddaddy of them all is a whopping 843 acres of thousands of trees smack in the middle of Manhattan. New York City is the site of many traditional Mother's Day brunches. One of the best is the Queens Botanical Garden farm-to-table brunch. Mom and the members of her party will enjoy a fresh menu by local caterers. There are two sessions: one at 10 am and another at 1 pm. Before or after brunch, take a stroll and enjoy this living museum. The New York Botanical Garden honors Mom with a fabulous Weekend Garden Party. It features food trucks, live music, games, and more. May is perfect for picnicking on the grounds. One of the most popular Mother's Day brunches is a yacht brunch on the Hudson River. Treat Mom to free-flowing mimosas or sangria, a delicious brunch, and live jazz. It's offered by Hornblower Cruises at their Pier 40 location in West Village.

4. Memorial Day Celebrationss

New York loves to honor those who have served their country in times of war. You will find a spirited parade to attend in all of the five boroughs. The largest is the Little Neck-Douglaston parade in Queens. Brooklyn's Memorial Day Parade is the oldest. It begins at 78th Street and Third Avenue. Manhattan's Inwood has a smaller parade which travels from Dyckman Street and Broadway.

5. Fleet Weeks

Fleet week is a seven-day celebration that coincides with Memorial Day. It honors the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. The party kicks off with the impressive Parade of Ships, a fleet of tall ships and visiting vessels on the Hudson River. Military demonstrations and more shows plenty of New York patriotism.

Taking a Broadway show will chase away any rainy day blues during your visit to New York City. It might not be possible to get last minute tickets to every show, but you can find something a couple of hours before the show starts by visiting the box office of the theatre.

Rochester Lilac Festival in Rochester – May 10-19

Dubbed the “largest free festival of its kind in North America”, the Rochester Lilac Festival will be returning to the Finger Lakes this May.

While an entire festival highlighting these beautiful and fragrant flowers might be enough on its own to attract visitors, there’s also a lot going on during the event’s three weekends.

Activities include craft beer and wine tastings, kid’s activities, art vendors, garden displays, and several races. There’s also a parade on May 11 featuring more than 2,000 participants.

Japan Parade in New York City – May 11

Commemorate the history of Japanese relations with the United States with the Japan Parade, happening along Central Park West on Saturday, May 11. 

The third edition of the parade is sure to delete with an entire parade filled with rich Japanese culture and music. And, it all starts off with the parade’s Grand Marshall, Paralympian Shingo Kunieda.

Albany Tulip Festival in Albany – May 11-12

GlassFest in Corning – May 24-26

GlassFest in Corning celebrates the town’s rich history of glassmaking. New York events in May

1.  Watch the Japan Parade

• Things to do

Described as "a huge 'Arigato!' from the Japanese community to New York City," the Japan Parade brings dance performances, musicians, marching bands, martial arts and traditional costumes to Manhattan.

The parade marches along Central Park West between 81st Street and 67th Street (heading south toward 67th Street) on Saturday, May 11 starting at 1pm.

2.  Eat takoyaki at JAPAN Fes

• Events & Festivals

Eat your way through Japan without ever leaving New York City at JAPAN Fes, the massive foodie festival, which is back and bigger than ever for 2024. The organization is hosting 30 outdoor events this year stretching through November in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Event organizers say it's the largest Japanese food festival in the world, attracting 300,000 visitors and featuring 1,000 vendors every year.

Expect dishes including takoyaki, ramen, matcha sweets, yakisoba, karaage, okonomiyaki, and lots more. They're even hosting a ramen contest and a konamon contest this year to crown the best of the bunch. Vendors hail from New York City, as well as other states and other countries. 

Here's the festival's schedule for May: May 5 on the Upper East Side; May 11 in Chelsea; May 19 in Park Slope; May 26 in Greenwich Village. 

3.  Eat deliciously at Smorgasburg

• Restaurants

Smorgasburg , the food bazaar spectacular, is back for 2024 with dozens of great local vendors across three locations.

In fact, with more than 70 vendors, it's the largest Smorgasburg lineup since 2018!  Vendors this year will serve up  fragrant Ethiopian stews, Hawaii-style street comforts, explosive pani puri, potato puff poutine, and lots more.

Smorgasburg WTC runs on Fridays; Williamsburg is on Saturdays; and Prospect Park is on Sundays. Each location is open from 11am-6pm and operates weekly through October. 

4.  Go fly a kite in Brooklyn

An array of colorful kites will take to the skies next month as part of Sound & Color! , a free spring festival in Brooklyn on Saturday, May 18. 

It's the one day of the year when kite flying is open to the public at the Park's Pier 5, so you don't want to miss it. Whether you bring your own kite, buy one there, or make your own at a workshop during the event, the festival promises a fun kickoff to the warmer months. 

Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy hosts the family-friendly event, which takes place across its namesake park from 11am-5pm on May 18. Last year's festival brought together more than 5,000 attendees, so this year event organizers are expanding the event to include additional musical festivities across the park. Though kite-flying at Pier 5 is the main draw, also expect more kids' activities plus food vendors. 

5.  Make plans to go to a night market

Six open-air night markets will pop up around town this summer, from the Bronx to Brooklyn and Manhattan to Queens. Plus, the Vegan Night Market and Latin Night Market are back! We've rounded up details on all six, so grab some cash and make plans to eat locally—and deliciously.

6.  Catch an exhibition of Paul McCartney's photos

Screaming and crying girls. Innumerable hotel rooms. Nonstop camera flashes. A group of four Liverpudlian guys in the middle of it all. Beatlemania made an indelible mark on history and on our lives.

Sir Paul McCartney, the group’s bassist and one of two lead singers, is showcasing more than 250 of his own photographs that illustrate the intensity of this historical moment, but also the quiet, personal moments unseen by millions of fans in “ Paul   McCartney  Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm ” at the Brooklyn Museum. The show opens on May 3.

Inside are photos illustrating the demands of touring, the constant media attention as well as McCartney’s band members, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, who were undergoing an extremely life-changing era. The exhibit gives a highly personal look into their lives much like a family album, according to the museum.

7.  Watch classic movies at Rooftop Cinema Club

Take your movie-going experience to the next level this summer at Rooftop Cinema Club. The experience offers a chance to watch a movie on a Midtown rooftop with vegan popcorn, classic theater candy, and craft cocktails.

Kicking off on May 1, this season's rooftop movie schedule includes classics like  When Harry Met Sally , Dirty Dancing , Grease , Mean Girls , Clueless , and so much more. Also expect special programming for Star Wars day, AAPI Heritage Month, Black Music Month, and Pride Month. Plus, it’s adding a Saturday Cereal Club and Mimosas & Muffins Sundays. 8.  See giant puppets on parade

Giant puppets will parade through the Lower East Side on Saturday, May 11, to raise awareness for a giant issue: Climate solutions.

" Ecological City: Procession for Climate Solutions " is described as "an urban ecological pilgrimage." Marchers will stop at more than a dozen gardens throughout the neighborhood showcasing visual art, music, dance, theater, and poetry. Expect to see 500 people in spectacular costumes during this theatrical pageant, along with mobile sculptures and larger-than-life puppets.

Though the event falls after Earth Month, it keeps alive the important conversations about sustainability, climate change, and climate solutions. 

9.  Behold the most iconic jewelry from hip-hop history

If you know anything about hip-hop, then you understand that it’s not just a genre of music—it’s an entire lifestyle, complete with its own lexicon, fashion and accessories. 

The American Museum of Natural History is going to pay homage to some of the most iconic custom-made jewelry in hip-hop history with its exhibit “ Ice Cold ,”   which opens May 9 in celebration of the genre’s 50th anniversary. 

The exhibition will showcase jewelry from the 1980s until today and will include Slick Rick’s gem-encrusted crown, the Notorious B.I.G.’s gold ‘Jesus piece’, Nicki Minaj’s sparkling ‘Barbie’ pendant, and pieces from Erykah Badu, A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, A$AP Ferg, and Tyler, the Creator, among many other legendary pieces of bling.

10.  Watch "Top Gun" on an aircraft carrier

Many free outdoor movie screenings are taking place all over town this summer, but none boast an ambiance quite like that of the Intrepid Museum's Summer Movie Series.  After all, you get to watch some awesome movies while hanging out on aircraft carrier's flight deck at sunset. How cool!

In connection with the museum's fascinating newest exhibition: Apollo: When We Went to the Moon ,   all of   the movies this summer will feature stories about humankind’s exploration and fascination with the Moon.  Here is the upcoming schedule:

— Friday, May 24: Top Gun: Maverick — Friday, June 28: Apollo 13 — Friday, July 26: First Man — Friday, August 23: Moonfall

11.  Think deeply at the Whitney Biennial

Art nerds can’t wait until the Whitney Biennial, which happens every two years. It’s always a gigantic showcase of some of the coolest, newest, and most provocative art at a big New York City museum. It’s the Whitney Museum of American Art’s  landmark exhibition series and the longest-running survey of American Art, on view through August 11.

This year, the Biennial is themed “ Even Better Than The Real Thing” and features the  work of 71 artists and collectives. It does  a lot  in this iteration. T he survey examines rapidly advancing technologies and machine learning tools; t he body and subjectivity as it pertains to queer identity, body sovereignty, motherhood, the aging body, and the trans body; m aterial agency and the use of unstable media;  and lots more.

Overarching is the focus on “the real,” an extremely present topic these days with the onslaught of incorrect ChatGPT answers, horrifying deep fakes and art made by AI.  

12.  Dance it out at Head in the Clouds

Head in the Clouds, an epic music festival that highlights Asian-American talent, is coming back to New York City on May 11 and 12 at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. 

This is the second time 88Rising , the recording company that represents top Asian artists like Joji and Keith Ape, is having its festival in New York following the success of last year’s event. Tickets for the festival start at $259.50.

Artists in this year’s lineup include the viral Internet girl group ATARASHII GAKKO!, R&B artist thuy, K-Pop group Young Posse, and many others. 

13.  Learn about cool bugs at IMAGINARI

Think bugs are creepy? Think again. That's the message of IMAGINARI, an immersive art and science experience that opened today in Manhattan. 

The year-long exhibition called  The Insect World  shows just how cool—and important—bugs actually are.  You’ll get to walk through fields of 6-foot flowers, come face-to-face with Picasso bug artwork, and see a mantis partying under a disco ball. Larger-than-life ladybug sculptures dot the floor, and 200 faux monarch butterflies perch on a 12-foot cherry blossom tree. It all adds up to an important message of environmental stewardship.  Tickets  are on sale now for $36; the all-ages exhibition will be on view for one year.

14.  Shop 'til you drop at FAD Market

• Markets and fairs

Shop 'til you drop at FAD Market, a curated fashion, art and design pop-up marketplace, which is back for 2024. Expect to see your favorite makers plus brand new creatives to help you live smarter, gift better and support local businesses. 

FAD—which stands for Fashion, Art and Design—takes over different venues with a horde of independent vendors and creators.   Admission is free and dogs are welcome!

Here's the schedule for May:  — May 4-5: Brooklyn Brewery Market at Brooklyn Brewery — May 11-12: Mother's Day and Made in NYC Market  at Empire Stores in Dumbo — May 18-19: NYCxDesign Market at The Invisible Dog Art Center

15.  Stroll through Field of Light

On the far east edge of Manhattan, 18,750 glowing orbs of light sprout from the ground. They gleam in green, blue, pink, and purple tones, each one emerging from the Earth like an avant-garde flower. The fiber optic lights are part of an otherworldly experience called   Field of Light . 

The 6-acre installation was installed by British artist Bruce Munro who’s known for using light to create an emotional response. Though the skyline is visible from Field of Light, the installation feels far away from the typical hustle and bustle of the city, allowing me to detach from my daily worries. 

Expect to spend about 30 minutes strolling through Field of Light. While the exhibit is free to visit through fall, you will need to   reserve a ticket online ; a standby line is available for walkups. Find Field of Light at East 41st Street between First Avenue and FDR Drive.

16.  Score some cool finds at Hester Street Fair

The Hester Street Fair is back for its 15th season bringing together extraordinary local vendors for a bustling outdoor marketplace. The market features handmade jewelry, ceramics and candles, pet accessories, vintage clothing, seasonal pies, soju-spiced cocktails and lots more.

Find all the fun at the Seaport at Pier 17 (89 South Street). Here's what's on the schedule for May: — Classic Market, May 11: Stroll through the shops and pick up a gift for the mother figures in your life in advance of Mother's Day. — Made in NYC Market, May 12: Shop local from vendors who represent NYC. — Memorial Day weekend, May 25-26: Kick off the summer season with this market that welcomes summertime.

17.  Check out the Met's rooftop artwork

One of the most anticipated events at the Met is their annual Roof Garden Commission, an art series in which the New York institution chooses one artist to use the coveted space as their canvas. 

This year’s commission, which was just unveiled today, sends a playful yet extremely poignant and timely message about children who find themselves in war zones. The exhibition,  titled  Abetare , is on view through October 27; it's included with general admission.

The artist,  Petrit Halilaj , was born in war-torn Kosovo in 1986 and had to flee his home during the Yugoslav Wars in 1998. He lived with his family in a refugee camp in Serbia for a year, where he drew pictures of war scenes that he had witnessed back home.  The sculptures on the roof were inspired by doodles Halilaj found at the school he attended in Runk, Kosovo before it was demolished in 2010.

18.  Throw confetti at the Spring Self-Love Celebration Lab

Celebrate  you at the Self-Love edition of The Confetti Project. The May 11 event in Brooklyn brings the concept of play into adulthood — with lots of beautiful confetti. This three-hour immersive experience "challenges perfectionism by giving you an opportunity to make a mess while embracing the messiness of being alive," event organizers promise.

Play in pastel confetti, embrace somatic movement, and get some great photos to remember the experience. "This is for perfectionists, cycle-breakers, the highly sensitive, over-thinkers, lifelong longers, creatives, and anyone that wants to challenge their self-imposed limitations or overwhelm," per event leaders.

19.  Laugh out loud at the Asian Comedy Festival

Returning for its fifth year, the largest and longest running AAPI comedy festival is back with a star-studded lineup that includes Jes Tom (Netflix, Our Flag Means Death ), Youngmi Mayer (podcaster, writer, author) Yuhua Hamasaki ( RuPaul’s Drag Race ), The Fung Brothers (YouTube), and more.

It's not just stand-up, either. Comedians will perform improv  comedy and even musical comedy .  This year's festival will be held at Sugar Mouse in the St. Mark's neighborhood (47 3rd Ave.) on May 7, 14 and 15. Asian Comedy Fest will also donate a portion of its profits to the  AAPI non-profit Welcome To Chinatown.

20.  Play pickleball at Central Park's Wollman Rink

Turns out, pickleball was not just a passing fad. 

Doubling down on the popularity of the sport, Central Park is gearing up for the return of the 14-court pickleball installation via CityPickle that took over Wollman Rink in 2023. This year, the experience will officially debut on May 1, offering players of all skill levels the chance to reserve courts or partake in open play sessions between 8am and 9pm daily.

21.  Embrace the magic of live music at Abracadabra NYC

Abracadabra NYC , a huge outdoor party held over two stages is returning to the Industry City courtyard on Saturday, May 11. 

The festival is a collaboration between production company ZERO, Bushwick nightclub House of Yes and the all-women’s collective Abracadabra, teaming up to curate an impressive lineup of performances and special events. Abracadabra events tends to be pretty explosive and high energy, so prepare for long hours of amazing beats.  Among the live musical acts will be electronic artist TSHA, Local Singles, Julia Sandstorm and sets by BLOND:ISH, a DJ who performed at this year’s Coachella.

The event will begin at 4pm and continue through midnight. Regular tickets start at $45, while VIP tickets will run $175 or more.  You can get your tickets to the party right  here .

22.  Marvel at The Met's Harlem Renaissance exhibit

The Harlem Renaissance had an indisputable impact on American culture, but chances are that you probably didn’t spend much time learning about it in school. That’s because, even though it shaped global literature, music, and art, Black Americans’ historical contributions have been systematically erased or gone unacknowledged for centuries.

A groundbreaking exhibit opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art hopes to be a part of rectifying the erasure and celebrating Black artists and intellectuals in its newest exhibit. "The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism." 

The exhibit presents 160 works by Black artists from the Harlem Renaissance and delves into many different aspects of the movement, mostly through the lens of paintings and sculpture.  You can get your tickets   here ; the show's on view through July 28.

23.  Go on a street vendor scavenger hunt

New York City’s culinary scene would be nothing without its street vendors, many of whom serve some of the most delicious food across the five boroughs but rarely get the flowers they deserve. 

To spread more love to these small independent businesses, the Street Vendor Project is organizing a giant, citywide scavenger hunt that will encourage New Yorkers to learn more about the street vending community and put some new spots on their foodie radars.

The multi-part scavenger hunt is taking place across Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens from May 4-17. To play the game, you’ll form a team of up to 10 friends via their registration page . 

24.  Make your own handbag at Sip & Stitch

At Sip & Stitch, create your very own custom handbag with the guidance of purse pro Anthony Luciano. As a longtime handbag artisan and a fashion expert, Luciano will share tips and tricks for making a handbag that's perfect for your personal style. 

The lively workshops are held in Luciano’s Garment District studio, which is packed with vintage ephemera, beautiful decor, and plenty of purses to spark your inspiration. The class begins with a chance to pick a leather color and texture of your choosing—just nothing boring, as Luciano admonishes. Once that’s sorted, he’ll guide you through each step of the process, from cutting to gluing to making final touches. While the workshop is called Sip & Stitch, there’s technically no “stitching” involved, so don’t be intimidated. Even if you’re not a crafty person, Luciano and his team will make sure you leave with a handbag you’re proud to carry. 

Several workshops fall under the Sip & Stitch umbrella, from a classic handbag to a unisex option. Prices range from $175 to $275, with adult beverages and snacks provided at the higher price point. The team plays pop and disco tunes in the background, making a fun and fashionable night for all.

25.  See Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys' art collection

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz are more often associated with their musical artistry, but the NYC-native couple has also amassed an impressive visual art collection. This winter, you'll be able to see their collection at the Brooklyn Museum in a new exhibit called   "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys ."

The exhibition will feature more than 100 major artworks by important Black American, African, and African diasporic artists including Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley, Hassan Hajjaj, Barkley L. Hendricks, Lorna Simpson, and Amy Sherald. The show featuring giants in the art world runs through July 7, 2024. 

26.  Dive into an 'Alice in Wonderland' floral exhibit

The New York Botanical Garden is getting in on the Mad Hatter fun with a new, garden-wide exhibition for 2024 titled “Wonderland: Curious Nature.”

On view from Saturday, May 18 through Sunday, October 27, 2024, the enchanting display will “feature horticultural and contemporary art installations that evoke the spirit of exploration and uncanny nature of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ,” per the NYBG.

Inspired by the classic tale and its 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There , the immersive exhibition will be a true sensory adventure, with visitors able to explore a variety of mind-bending experiences set throughout the botanical garden’s iconic glasshouse, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building and across its stunning 250-acre grounds.

27.  See vintage Statue of Liberty tattoos

For more than a century, the Statue of Liberty has offered inspiration as a beacon of freedom, equality, and democracy. And for just as long, she has also served as an inspiration for tattoo artists. 

A new exhibit at City Reliquary, a jewel box of a museum in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, features vintage Statue of Liberty tattoos. As the first show devoted to Lady Liberty ink, it also traces tattooing history in NYC since the 1800s. " Liberty the Tattooed Lady: The Great Bartholdi Statue as Depicted in Tattooing " is now open through January 12, 2025.

The exhibition spotlights antique flash, vintage photographs, drawings, and other ephemera that show how Lady Liberty has been a popular subject in tattooing for as long as she’s stood in New York Harbor. You'll even get to see vintage tattoo art that's never been on display before.

28.  Rock out at Sound Mind Music Festival for Mental Health

Let’s face it: Between all the noise, how expensive everything is, and how fast we all gotta move, New York isn’t the most conducive for fostering great mental health, which is why any event that prioritizes our psychological wellbeing always feels refreshing.

Sound Mind Music Festival for Mental Health is the perfect example of an event that wants to get serious about mental health while still having fun, and it’s been going strong for several years. On Sunday, May 18, the festival is returning for its sixth year of celebrations that will include a free, open-air event  in the streets of Brooklyn. 

The festival will take place on Jefferson Street between Irving Avenue and Wyckoff Avenue in Bushwick starting at 12pm, and will feature sets from musician Kevin Morby, MisterWives, Bailen and SHAED. 

29.  See a show on The Rooftop at Pier 17

The Rooftop at Pier 17 is planning a packed summer of musical performances with more than 60 outdoor shows. The panoramic views, the chill vibe, and the stellar acoustics make it a truly special spot to see a show. 

The sixth Summer Concert Series on The Rooftop at Pier 17 features more than 60 artists in genres from rap (Isaiah Rashad) to rock (Social Distortion) to electronic (Electric Callboy) and more. Plus, there are several bands on the roster that will make Millennials swoon with nostalgia (like Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate, Two Door Cinema Club, and Mayday Parade).   Get tickets here .  

30.  Celebrate the art of design at the NYCxDESIGN Festival

Celebrate all things design at this annual festival that brings in the city’s designers, makers, and manufacturers, along with cutting-edge design businesses and districts, and leading cultural and academic institutions. The festival covers all areas of design, from architecture and urban design to product design and entertainment design.

The eight-day festival from May 16-23 will take place at different venues across the five boroughs, so make sure to check out their website  for updates on programming. 

31.  Go wild at Luna Park in Coney Island

One of the surest signs of spring: Beloved amusement park Luna Park in Coney Island reopens! Amusement park staples will still entertain you this summer, but new rides and upgrades are also in the works.

First off: Electric Eden Raceway, a completely new attraction featuring sustainable, electric-powered Go-Karts, will open later this season. Plus, the park's restaurants and concession stands "will be elevating their menus with even more delicious food and beverage options," park officials said.

32.  Catch a free show at Bryant Park

Bryant Park Picnic Performances are coming back for 2024. There's a long list of  25 live music, dance, and theater events that’ll occur May 31 to September 13.

For May, head to the park on May 31 to enjoy New York City Opera's Puccini Celebration. As usual, there are no tickets required (it’s free) and there will be more than 700 picnic blankets for audience members to borrow and chairs available on a first-come, first-served basis.

33.  Hear from 100 renowned writers at this literary festival

Great authors help readers understand the world, and this upcoming literary festival invites everyone to understand their fascinating writing process. 

The PEN World Voices Festival is back for its 20th edition running from May 8 to 11 in New York City, with most events in Greenwich Village. With 100 writers featured in 35 events, the festival celebrates the power of literature both to transport and galvanize. The festival features literary superstars like Roxane Gay, Min Jin Lee, Tara Westover, Joyce Carol Oates, and Jodi Picoult.

34.  Experience Afro-surrealism and Afrofuturism through digital art

Digital art and poetry will combine for a dive into Afrocentricity and Afrofuturism at this new immersive exhibit in Chelsea. " Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies " is now open at ARTECHOUSE and runs all summer.

The digital art exhibition promises a "vibrant reflection upon the past, present, and future of the Black experience." It's told through the perspective of London-based Afro-surrealist digital artist Vince Fraser alongside evocative poetry by ursula rucker.

Both artists worked to honor the legacy, struggles, and complexities of the Black experience in their work. Even the exhibition's title, "Aṣẹ" stems from a powerful mantra, affirmation, and philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, meaning "so will it be." (By the way, that's pronounced as AH-shay.)

35.  Be awed by New York City travel posters

Poster House, the country's first museum dedicated entirely to the global history of posters, turns its lens on its hometown for its latest exhibit. "Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters," highlights 80 works that capture NYC's landmarks in vibrant color and detail. 

The exhibit explores how New York City was represented to thousands of travelers, immigrants, and tourists during the 20th century. A 19th century marketing strategy coined the phrase "Wonder City," and it appeared in dozens of newspaper and magazine advertisements, as well as articles, postcards and souvenir booklets. New York’s massive growth during this time ultimately led to the creation of more travel posters than were designed for any other city in the world. The images included scenes of the city as seen from the water, from the ground, and, eventually, from the air. 

The show was curated by Nicholas D. Lowry, and it's on view through September 8.

36.  Catch the Rubin Museum’s final exhibit before it closes its space

The Rubin Museum, that legendary building in Chelsea that has housed the largest collection of Himalayan art in the world for two decades,  is permanently closing its physical space  later this year. As sad as this is for New York’s culture scene, New Yorkers at least get to enjoy the museum until October, and you should definitely plan to make the most of it until then. 

The museum’s last exhibit, “Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now , ”   will be an appropriate, forward-looking nod to 32 contemporary artists from the Himalayas and the Asian diaspora whose work will be shown in dialogue with objects from the museum’s existing collection.

The exhibit will continue all the way through the museum's physical closing on October 6. Expect to see 32 new commissions and work across mediums, including painting, sculpture, sound, video, performance and more.

37.  Feel enchanted by this Beatrix Potter exhibit

The author and illustrator who ignited our childhood imaginations with tales of cuddly bunnies, mischievous squirrels and daring ducks is getting a well-deserved spotlight in NYC.

The wholesome and beautiful works of beloved children’s author and land conservationist Beatrix Potter are now on view at The Morgan Library & Museum through June 9.

“ Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature ” is the most darling show in the city right now. The exhibition even features a delightful recreation of Potter’s home that you can actually sit and read in.

38.  See the fabulous costumes of 'The Masked Singer'

In the TV show "The Masked Singer," celebrity contestants disguise themselves head to toe in elaborate costumes to shield their identities. The concept has captivated audiences of all ages for 11 seasons, and now you can see the incredible costumes up-close and in-person. 

The Paley Center for Media will present "  Spotlighting the Costumes That Captivated America " at its midtown museum from through Sunday, May 19. 

The costumes on display, which helped the show win two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, merge fashion, fantasy, and artistry. Each is a fantastical creation, extraordinary in its intricacy, originality, and scale. Some of the fan-favorite costumes include Miss Monster, Flamingo, Chameleon, and Gazelle.

39.  Laugh out loud at Caveat's Sketch Sampler

You know when you can’t decide between chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and jalapeño poppers? That’s where an appetizer platter comes in handy, satisfying a bunch of cravings without limiting you to one solitary dish. Consider this the appetizer platter of sketch-comedy shows: on Friday, May 10 at 9:30pm, Caveat will welcome funny sketches and scenarios from not one but five different comedy shows, including Fun In Moderation, Young Douglas, Soy Pony, Recent Cutbacks and One Bad Egg. Because with comedy, as with fried snacks, the more is definitely the merrier.

40.  Journey to the moon

Board the gigantic aircraft carrier docked along the Hudson River for a trip to space this spring.   The Intrepid Museum   will soon host "Apollo: When We Went to the Moon," the largest temporary exhibition in its four-decade history. 

The exhibit, which runs through September 2, blasts off into an exploration of the space race, both as a scientific feat and as an inspiration for millions. The new exhibit is included with museum admission.

Visitors can climb aboard a lunar rover model, leave footprints on the Moon via a virtual moonwalk, and see Apollo artifacts. "Apollo: When We Went to the Moon" spans 9,000 square feet in the museum’s Space Shuttle Pavilion where it'll join the Space Shuttle Enterprise. 

41.  Explore product photography at the Met

Featuring 60 works from The Met's collection, this exhibition traces the history and transformation of product photography, and delves into the techniques and messaging that brands have used throughout time. The photos include an ad for Panama hats in 1916, lipstick from the 1940s, shoes from the 1950s, and so much more.

"The Real Thing: Unpackaging Product Photography" is on view through August 4.

42.  Try a Zero-Proof Cocktail Making Class

Third Place Bar, a “non-alcoholic pop-up bar” that regularly hosts alcohol-free events for “the sober, sober-curious, and those simply opting for a night off from alcohol,” will be partnering with TALEA Beer Co. for a zero-proof cocktail-making class on Thursday, May 9.

During the booze-free workshop, you’ll learn all the basics of drink making, get an introduction to non-alcoholic spirits and botanicals, and turn everything you’ve learned into a delicious, no-hangovers-necessary drink that will rival a classic cocktail and delight your sober-curious friends. A $65 ticket includes not only the bartending instruction but also snacks, spirit samples, and two non-alcoholic cocktails.

43.  Belly laugh at Second City comedy club

Need a laugh?   The Second City —the renowned comedy club with locations in Chicago and Toronto—just opened in Brooklyn, and you will definitely laugh out loud there. The New York City venue, which opened on the legendary club’s 65th anniversary, offers hilarious live comedy every single night of the week.

Some of the funniest names in comedy got their start at Second City. Just a few Second City alumni include: Bill Murray, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Amber Ruffin,  Keegan-Michael Key,  Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and Aidy Bryant. You might just see the next comedy star on this stage.

The venue offers sketch shows and improv performances, along with a great restaurant and no drink minimums in a beautiful venue. Tickets start at $39.

44.  Admire Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s iconic collars

As she donned the black robe for her role on the Supreme Court, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was known to adorn the traditional garment with a wide array of collars and necklaces. 

Now, her fashion is getting the spotlight in a new photography exhibit called "RBG Collars: Photographs by Elinor Carucci." See it at   The Jewish Museum  on the Upper East Side through May 27, 2024. 

The installation features two dozen photographs of the late justice’s collars and necklaces taken shortly after Ginsburg died in 2020. This is the first time the Carucci’s photographs are being shown at the Jewish Museum since the images were acquired in 2021.

45.  Hear 150 musicians in Brooklyn

For the fourth year, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music will host its Open Stages music festival, with 15 different stages on stoops, schoolyards, parks, and local cafes throughout Park Slope on Saturday, May 11. From 3pm to 7pm, you can hear performances   from over 150 musicians, showcasing 40 genres of music—everything from Klezmer to opera to jazz.

And if you’re bringing along the kiddos, the youngins can enjoy a   Wizard of Oz -themed singalong at J.J. Byrne Playground and teen rock bands on the festival’s Gen-Z Fren-Z stage at Milk Bar.

46.  Tune into the New York African Film Festival

Now in its 31st year, the New York African Film Festival is back at Film at Lincoln Center from Wednesday, May 8 to Tuesday, May 14 to explore "the intersection of historical and contemporary roles played by individuals representing Africa and its diaspora in art."

Featuring more than 50 films from more than 25 countries, the festival "invites audiences to delve into the convergence of archival and modern experimentalism" under the theme of "Convergence of Time." Opening Night will feature the North American premiere of the acclaimed Nigerian  film  Over the Bridge  by Tolu Ajaji. The Centerpiece this year is  Perpetual Connections , a shorts program, and Dilli Dark  by Dibakar Das Roy will serve as the Closing Night film.  In a first-ever, the  festival  will include a dance performance along with the screening of a  film ,  Making Men , which examines the question of masculinity.

47.  Visit the Human Petting Zoo (Cosplay Art Installation)

Known for his large-scale, multimedia artworks, New York’s own   Brian Andrew Whiteley is taking over Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center for a one-day installation of   Dirty Secret Volume IV .

The performative, interactive “Human Petting Zoo” experience “will go further down the spiral into an even more intense labyrinth and playland,” organizers promise. We’re talking “furry fountains,” human cages, hay bales and projection art, as well as live music and electronic sets by Brian Wenner with select instrumentalists. Attendees can truly choose their own adventure, immersing   themselves in a unique atmosphere where they can pet, play and connect with live performers in furry outfits.

See it on Thursday, May 9. It's recommended that you RSVP in advance here ; if you do, you'll get a basket of food you can feed to the furries. 

48.  Feel some peace at "None Whatsoever: Zen Paintings from the Gitter-Yelen Collection"

This is more than your garden-variety art exhibition– None Whatsoever: Zen Paintings from the Gitter-Yelen Collection is, yes, a tranquil display of Zen Buddhist artwork. But it will also feature in-gallery activities like meditation sessions, calligraphy workshops, a tea ceremony demonstration and an ikebana (floral arrangement) workshop.

Spanning over 400 years and drawn from the Gitter-Yelen Collection, the exhibit explores the origins of Zen Buddhism through more than 50 works by Buddhist painter-monks, including the 18th-century master Hakuin Ekaku.

Check out the show through Sunday, June 16 at the Japan Society. 

49.  Celebrate Mother’s Day in NYC

When’s the best time to visit New York? New York experiences all four seasons, and often temperature extremes — but I think the best time to visit New York is in the fall from September to November.

That said, that’s just one small part of the year — and it could be completely different for you. You might hate that time of year if you came for festivals, or outdoor dining, or the cheapest prices. (And if you have kids or work in education, you might not be able to come then at all.)

So I set out to create the best guide on the best time to travel to New York, completely with temperature, atmosphere, crowd level, and event information.

I lived in New York for several years until recently, and living there was one of the great joys of my adult life. I know the city extremely well, and this guide is full of tidbits that you only get after living awhile in New York.

Like just how hot the 96th St. 1-2-3 platform gets in August. Or just how bad the crowds are on Fifth Avenue in December.

Or the incredible feeling you get when taking part in an activity with a huge crowd of strangers, whether it’s a rare eclipse or a surprise Janet Jackson concert in your neighborhood.

In short — New York is a one-of-a-kind city, and you are going to have a wonderful time here, not matter what time of year you decide to go to New York. Let’s get to the guide!

Best Time to Visit New York

The best time to visit New York is during the fall months: late September, all of October, and early November. This is for three main reasons:

The weather is fantastic. Nice, warm and cool temperatures that are perfect for strolling around outdoors. Some days you need no jacket; some days just a light jacket is perfect. One big difference from spring is that it doesn’t rain as often during the fall.

Crowds have thinned out. New York’s busiest seasons are from June through August and Thanksgiving through New Year’s. Kids are back in school and many families are averse to traveling so early in the school year, and families comprise a decent percentage of New York tourists.

Prices have dropped. New York is always expensive, don’t get me wrong, but hotel prices are much lower in the fall lower than during the summer months and the peak season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

And a bonus reason: fall colors. That’s just a bonus, in my opinion! You see the best fall colors in New York from mid-October to early November, peaking in late October. Don’t miss the fall foliage in Central Park, Prospect Park, and Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters.

I recommend visiting New York during the fall months , from late September through early November. May and June are nice, too.

In my opinion, the best month to visit New York is October , for beautiful weather and gorgeous fall colors.

There’s lots to do in New York year-round, but we love September for family trips because most kid-friendly Big Apple attractions are empty.

In the winter temperatures are frequently below freezing, especially in January , but usually hover between 28-45 F (-2-7 C).

Festivals occur year-round in New York but there are many great ones in the summer, especially June , as well as between Thanksgiving and New Years’.

New York Weather

New York gets every kind of weather you can imagine . It experiences all four seasons and the weather fluctuates throughout the year. 

In the winter you have plenty of subzero days and major snowstorms; the spring growsinto warmer and warmer temperatures, but with decent rain; summer is very hot with high humidity, and the fall is warm-to-cool with mostly clear skies.

There are pros and cons to each season in New York. Let’s break down each season one by one.

New York in Spring

Spring in New York is absolutely beautiful and a great time to visit . As long as you come during actual spring: early April through early June. March is still very much winter temperatures here.

Yes, New York has cherry blossoms, and they tend to bloom at the end of March or the beginning of April. They symbolize the beginning of warmer months ahead with their bright spring colors. Some of the best places to see cherry blossoms in New York are Central Park, Roosevelt Island, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which has a cherry blossom festival in April.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the spring is to wake up early and take a long, leisurely walk through Central Park, enjoying the fresh cool air and the dogs enjoying off-leash hours.

It can be a cheerful time to visit after a cold winter, but many days can be rainy. The temperature is comfortable for walking around and not too hot or too cold. It’s good to have a light jacket and umbrella with you.

Also, you have those exceptionally warm days that pop up every now and then, usually in mid-April. I live for the first hot day of the year in New York because everyone empties into the parks and enjoys the glorious sunshine!

If you have a genie and can predict the future, THAT is the best time to go to New York — the first hot day of the year. But if you’re feeling lucky, aim for the last week in April.

New York in Summer

Summer weather in New York is very hot and humid, which can be glorious, but also difficult to handle. Ah, New York in the summer is quite the contradiction.

On one hand, summer is when New York explodes into festivals and events, from Pride to the Mermaid Parade to the Jazz Lawn Party on Governor’s Island. There’s outdoor dining, rooftop parties, street festivals, and even time on the beach at Jacob Riis or the Rockaways.

On the other hand, summer can be miserable. The smell of garbage is particularly pungent in New York at this time of the year. Waiting for the subway can be on a platform 10+ degrees hotter than the temperature outside. And subway cars that have lost AC are their own brand of hell.

Honestly, I’m a big summer fan, but in New York I spend a lot of time visiting museums and doing indoor activities. I recommend doing the same, finding lots of places you can escape to if it gets too hot.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the summer is to take the Staten Island Ferry. It’s the best free activity in New York City, and standing outdoors on the ferry will give you some lovely breezes.

New York in Fall

Fall is a spectacular time to visit New York. It’s the best of every world, as I mentioned above: comfortable temperatures for walking around and exploring; mostly clear skies and limited rain; colorful fall foliage; and smaller crowds and lower hotel prices than peak season.

One thing I’ve noticed in my years as a travel writer is that September and October are MAGICAL. This is when kids go back to school and parents don’t want to travel that early in a new school year — so places are marvelously empty of kids.

Every fashionista knows that fall is the best season of the year for fashion — and New York is one of the most interesting fashion cities on the planet. Whether you go to Bryant Park for the shows or stroll through the streets of SoHo, fall is THE time for exploring fashion in New York.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the fall is to get out my camera and explore different neighborhoods and their local cuisines: Prospect Heights for Caribbean curries; Flushing for Hong Kong egg tarts; Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for Albanian burek.

(Pretty different than the Times-Square-Empire State Building-Brooklyn Bridge-High Line tourist attractions route, don’t you think?)

New York in Winter

When you live there, winter in New York sometimes feels eternally long and bleak, but there’s nothing like the city under a fresh snowfall.

New York gets several major snowstorms during the winter months, most of them between early January and late March. (Though it’s not unheard of to have a snowstorm in December or even as early as November.)

This is absolutely gorgeous — New York under a fresh snowfall is so lovely to photograph, especially Central Park and any neighborhood with brownstones. But that only lasts a few hours, and if the snow is deep, the city can grind to a halt.

Should you visit New York in the winter? I always say that you should only come here if you know what our winters are like. If you’re from Chicago or Minnesota, come on in! You know what you’re getting into. Good winter boots are BEYOND essential.

But if you’re from Florida or Texas, I strongly urge you to come at another time. On the NYC subreddits there are always posts by travelers from warm climates who don’t know how to deal with the cold and aren’t enjoying their trip. (If this is you, go to Uniqlo or H&M and buy a bunch of winter gear. It will make it easier.)

Winter is also the cheapest time of year to visit New York — specifically early January through late March.

One of my favorite things I’ve ever done in winter is the no-pants subway ride! This event in January is organized over social media. Groups of participants ride a set route of the NYC subway together in full winter gear except pants, ending up in Union Square. Somehow it always ends up being the coldest day of the year, but that adds to the fun.

High Season and Low Season in New York

Generally speaking, high season in New York is during the summer months, from June through August. This is when you have the biggest crowds and the highest prices. There is also a second high season in New York between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, when New York goes all out for Christmas and the holiday season.

Some peak days in New York, when accommodation is at its most expensive, are New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

There are also some paradoxes during high season. On Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, the city empties out as New Yorkers head for the beach. This can be a very pleasant time in local neighborhoods that don’t get a lot of tourists.

Low season in New York is from January to March. During this time you have winter weather and lots of unpredictable snowstorms. If you’re used to cold winters, this can be a great time to visit, as you’ll be able to enjoy lower hotel rates, visit uncrowded museums, and get cheap Broadway tickets.

Best Month to Visit New York

What’s the best month to visit New York? Usually I say October, but that’s not the whole story.

It depends on who you are and what kind of trip you want to have.

I’ve broken down every month in New York into atmosphere, weather, and events.

New York in January

January is the coldest month in New York and other than New Year’s, it’s not a busy time to visit. After the holiday season, prices drop and it’s one of the cheapest times of the year.

The average temperature in New York in January can range from 27 to 39 Fahrenheit (-3 to 4 Celsius). You can also expect snow in January, and likely multiple major snowstorms, in between a variety of sleet, rain, and wintry precipitation.

Events in New York in January include the Three Kings Day Parade in East Harlem, the world-famous Westminster Kennel Dog Show , and Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in February

February is a slow month in New York and one of the cheapest months out of the year. The cold, snowy weather of February keeps tourists away.

Average temperatures in New York in February range from 28 to 41 Fahrenheit (-2 to 5 Celsius) and you can expect a few major snowstorms, along with various other wintry weather.

Events in New York in February include the Lunar New Year Parade in the city’s numerous Chinatowns, the beginning of the multi-month Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens, and NYC restaurant week , when restaurants offer low-priced specials.

New York in March

March is the last of the cold months in New York and much more winter than spring. It’s still a cheaper time of year with fewer tourists because it’s too cold for spending much of the time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in March to be 36 to 50 Fahrenheit (2 to 10 Celsius). There is usually at least one snowstorm in March as well, sometimes more than one, and the weather still feels like winter through the end of the month.

Events in New York in March include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Fifth Avenue, the New York International Children’s Film Festival , and the Macy’s Flower Show in their flagship store on 34th Street.

New York in April

April is when New York starts to awake into spring, which makes it a lovely time to visit New York. In the early days of April, you can find cherry blossoms blooming and colorful flowers all around. Temperatures are moderate, though you may have a few cold and hot days mixed in.

Weather-wise, it can be a bit all over the place — some rainy days, some sun, some foggy mornings, a lot of cloudiness — but the weather is warming up and spring has sprung.

Average temperatures in New York in April range from 45 to 61 Fahrenheit (7 to 16 Celsius), though you’ll probably enjoy one or two super-warm days near the end of the month!

Events in New York in April include the New York Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue, Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden , and Earth Day , which brings in a variety of events.

New York in May

May is a great month to visit New York, especially if you like flowers. Spring is in full effect, the flowers are lovely and temperatures are comfortable for being outside. It’s just before summer begins and tourists make their way to the city, so May is the perfect time to beat the major crowds.

You can expect the average temperature in New York in May to be around 54 to 72 Fahrenheit (12 to 22 Celsius).

Events in New York in May include Bronx Week , celebrating everything about the northernmost borough; NYCX Design , showcasing interesting designs of all kinds, and the Ninth Ave International Food Festival in Hell’s Kitchen.

New York in June

June marks the start of summer in New York, and if you have your heart set on a New York summer trip, we recommend June over hotter, more humid July and August. Early June is much more spring-like and you’l experience more rain, but by late June, sizzling summer has set in.

You can expect temperatures in New York in June to be around 64 to 79 Fahrenheit (18 to 26 Celsius), and for it to be much warmer toward the end of the month than the beginning of the month.

Events in New York in June include NYC Pride , a full and boisterous celebration of all things queer; the costume-filled Coney Island Mermaid Parade , and the New York Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors’ Island.

New York in July

July is the hottest month in New York, and there are plenty of tourists in the city at this time. You can expect humid, sticky weather that can get uncomfortable for spending much of your time outdoors.

The average temperature in New York in July ranges from 68 to 84 Fahrenheit (20 to 29 Celsius), and the humidity can make it feel even hotter.

Events in New York in July include the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island; Shakespeare in the Park , with performances in Central Park, and Harlem Week , a monthlong celebration of New York’s coolest neighborhood.

New York in August

August in New York is another hot and humid summer month. It’s also a month when many New York’s escape the city, so it might have a less-crowded feel in less-touristy neighborhoods. Tourist crowds begin to slowly disperse by the end of the month.

The average temperature in New York in August can range from 68 to 82 Fahrenheit (20 to 28 Celsius).

Events in New York in August include the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows in Queens, the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in the East Village and Harlem, and the US Open in Flushing Meadows, Queens.

New York in September

September in New York marks the start of fall and is one of the best months of the year to visit NYC. The air is a comfortable temperature, there are fewer tourists in the city, and the leaves start changing color. It’s a wonderful time of year and when New York is at its best.

Average temperatures in New York in September range from 61 to 75 Fahrenheit (16 to 24 Celsius). Early September is much more like summer than fall.

Events in New York in September include the Festival of San Gennaro , the patron saint of Naples, in Little Italy; the Armory Show , one of the world’s major contemporary art shows; and the fall edition of Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in October

October is the best month to visit New York: full stop. It’s at the peak of fall, the leaves are all different colors, and everyone seems to be in a great mood. Prices and tourist levels begin to slowly drop and it’s the perfect weather for walking around outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in October to be around 50 to 64 Fahrenheit (10 to 18 Celsius).

Events in New York in October include the New Yorker Festival , where intellectual leaders come to give talks; New York Comic-Con , celebrating all things geeky; and of course Halloween, including the world-famous NYC Village Halloween Parade .

New York in November

November in New York is very much an in-between time of year. Fall is ending and winter is just beginning. You won’t really need to worry about snow at this point, unless there’s a rogue flurry, but it will start cooling down fast.

November can be a good time of year to visit New York because it’s not quite too cold to spend time outdoors. The Thanksgiving holiday, however, brings peak crowds and pricing.

You can expect the average temperatures in New York in November to range from 41 to 54 Fahrenheit (5 to 12 Celsius).

Events in New York in November include the New York City Marathon , which draws runners and spectators from around the world; the NYC Comedy Festival , which draws tons of big names; and of course the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade .

New York in December

December in New York is cold, but rarely very snowy. Some people think the best time to visit New York is during the Christmas season, so get ready for high prices and huge tourist crowds! If you enjoy the holidays, it can be a great time to visit New York, but it will be too cold to spend all of your time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in December to be around 32 to 43 Fahrenheit (0 to 6 Celsius).

Events in New York in December include the Rockettes’ Radio City Christmas Spectacular ; the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting ; and New Year’s Eve in Times Square .

Best Festivals in New York

New York throws some great festivals, especially in the summer and during the holidays. People from all over visit New York just to experience some of the festivals that take place each year.

Honestly, there are so many different festivals that we couldn’t possibly include them all in this post. Instead, here’s an overview of the best and biggest events of the year:

NYC Pride : In June, millions of people take place in NYC Pride, a series of events celebrating the LGBTQ community, culminating in a parade through downtown Manhattan. Nobody does pride like New York City!

Halloween: The New York City Village Halloween Parade takes place on Halloween night, October 31st, each year in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. It’s a great opportunity to get creative and dress up in costumes and enjoy the parade and parties all around New York. 

Jazz Age Lawn Party : Located on Governors Island in June, this weekend-long event celebrates New York City’s prohibition era. It’s a fun opportunity to travel back in time, dress as someone from the 1920s, and enjoy an exciting and informative event related to American history. 

Coney Island Mermaid Parade : Held in June on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, the Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the United States. It’s an unforgettable event and a great place to let loose and discover your inner sea creature. 

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade : Occurring on the fourth Thursday in November, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the world’s largest parade and famous for its enormous balloons and performances on parade floats.

Christmas: New York gets into the holiday spirit from Thanksgiving to New Years’ Day. Around Thanksgiving, you can find Christmas markets, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, shows, lights, and displays throughout New York. (Pro tip: the best place to see Christmas decorations is Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. They go ALL OUT.) The events that take place make it an exciting time to visit.

Best Time to Visit New York with Kids

Is New York a good destination to visit with kids? Absolutely. New York is one of the safest big cities in the US and it’s unparalleled in terms of fun kid-friendly activities. If you take your kids here, they will remember it forever.

The great thing about New York is that it can be fun to visit any time of year! The best time to visit with kids is either in the spring or fall when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold and there are fewer tourists.

Here’s a New York family travel hack: if you homeschool or follow a non-traditional school schedule, September is when the rest of the world is back at school. Get ready to enjoy kid-friendly attractions without the crowds.

Cheapest Time to Visit New York

The cheapest time to visit New York is during the winter months: January, February, and March. Accommodation are at their lowest prices. Flights and trains tend to be cheap, too, outside of holiday weekends like Martin Luther King Day. And a lot of Broadway shows have cheap tickets available (nope, not Hamilton so much, but pretty much anything else).

However, keep in mind that New York is cheap for a reason: winters here are harsh. As I wrote in my What NOT to Do in New York post, if you’re from Minnesota, you know what you’re getting into. If you’re from Texas, you’re going to struggle.

Overall Best Time to Go to New York

Overall, I think October is the best month to visit New York — but if you have leeway, late September, all of October, and early November are the best time to go to New York. You will absolutely love the big city at this time of year.

The 1-acre pools are enclosed in bronze panels on which the names of every victim are inscribed. The museum spans across 110,000 square feet and relays the narrative of the attacks through a series of multimedia displays, real-time recordings, authentic artifacts and an interactive table.

Expect a multimedia presentation at the top before stunning views are revealed. A restaurant and bar on the 101st floor are open to guests who have purchased tickets to the observatory.

Before you enter, be sure to snap a few shots of the exterior's ornate beaux-arts neoclassical architecture. Other must-sees include the Information Booth clock, the Whispering Gallery and Grand Central Market, a European-style food market that sells produce, gourmet ingredients and treats. Food options range from the upscale (Cipriani Dolci and The Campbell Bar) to the legendary (the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant) to the fast and easy (Shake Shack). As mentioned, there are also plenty of shopping options, though most travelers suggest you leave most of Grand Central's pricey merchandise in the store. If you want a train-themed souvenir, visit The New York Transit Museum Store in the shuttle passage.

Travelers call the train station "iconic" and say it's a beautiful space to walk through or to grab a meal and people-watch.

The coiled building (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) stands out on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street. Inside, the halls are chock full of works from the likes of Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Van Gogh, among others.

Visitors loved the building's design and architecture, but offered more mixed reviews for the art on display. Some raved about the permanent collection and the special exhibitions, while others felt the cost of entrance tickets was overpriced for the amount of art displayed. Reviewers recommended the Museum of Modern Art over the Guggenheim if you're short on time.

If you're in Harlem on a Wednesday you can still go to Amateur Night, an experience some previous travelers highly recommend.

Stroll through the courtyard of the Metropolitan Opera House even if you're not going inside for a performance. Every element of this opulent building – from the limestone architecture, to the lobby's glittering chandelier, to the acoustics in the concert hall – is gorgeous. Travelers call this opera house a feast for the eyes and ears. Tickets are notoriously expensive (as much as several hundred dollars for the best seats), but the sticker shock evaporates quickly if you're into performing arts. You can try to score a same-day ticket at a discounted rate, plus there are discounts for senior citizens.

The Metropolitan Opera House features spring performances by the American Ballet Theatre and fall and winter performances by the Met Opera Company. Showtimes and ticket prices vary by performance and seating, so check the Met Opera's website for additional details. You'll find the opera house at Lincoln Center Plaza on Manhattan's Upper West Side – take the 1 train to 66th Street.

It's where Ella Fitzgerald pined for the man she loved, the Rolling Stones couldn't get no satisfaction and Lady Gaga had a "Bad Romance." Among performers, there's no New York concert venue that's quite like Radio City Music Hall. Not only is it the largest indoor theater in the world, its marquee spans a full city block. Opened in 1932, the theater is a New York City Landmark. Today, the theater welcomes musical performers like Ben Platt and Lil Nas X, as well as comedians like Chris Rock.

If you're in town any dates between November and January, consider attending the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which stars the Rockettes. According to recent visitors who attended a show, there's not a bad seat in the house. If you're not able to attend a performance, consider signing up for the hourlong Radio City Stage Door Tour. The guided tour includes stops at areas of the historic venue not typically seen by the public, such as Radio City’s secret apartment, The Roxy Suite. You'll also an enjoy an in-depth history lesson about the stage and its iconic art deco design. The tour concludes with a meet-and-greet with a Radio City Rockette. Tours are offered daily starting at 9:30 a.m.; tickets cost $42 per adult and $38 per kid 12 and younger.  

The Battery The Battery free

Also known as The Battery, this 25-ace park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island, and offers a green respite from the steel and concrete of lower Manhattan. The park, named after artillery batteries that protected the settlement in the 17th century, is popular with visitors because of its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty . 

The park is home to perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm and a unique carousel, known as the SeaGlass Carousel. On the carousel, riders sit within iridescent fish and glide through a 360-degree aquatic adventure. The carousel’s bioluminescent design honors the waterfront site as well as another landmark, the Castle Clinton, one of the country’s earliest aquariums.

Known as the "the People's Playground," this famous amusement area in Brooklyn has witnessed an illustrious past. In the early 1900s, Coney Island enticed New Yorkers to visit with its bathing pavilions, seaside resorts and amusement park. The Great Depression took its toll on the fun-loving spot, causing many attractions to close. But after years of economic instability, Coney Island has reclaimed its place on the Brooklyn map, with a fresh roster of eateries and entertainment (including a July Fourth hot dog-eating contest and an annual Mermaid Parade ) found along the boardwalk. Coney Island now features several separate amusement parks, as well as a museum, which hosts a variety of exhibits and shows.

According to recent visitors, Coney Island is a worthwhile trip in the summer if you have the time and are traveling with young kids who would enjoy the rides. You can behold the building's menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan. Though the lobby is currently closed to visitors, there have been talks of building an observation deck, though none is available at this time.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrating the Mexican army’s victory over the French. The best way to celebrate it is with delicious Mexican food and drinks! There are some restaurants with Cinco de Mayo specialties where you can enjoy margaritas and traditional Mexican dishes in a vibrant setting.

Things to do in New York in May

Visit the statue of liberty.

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is something everyone must do when visiting New York City. You can see it for free or pay for a more in-depth experience. To see the Statue of Liberty for free you will take the free Staten Island ferry and pass it during the ride. Or you can pay for a tour boat to bring you up close and let you walk around it. May in New York welcomes slightly fewer tourists so you can even enjoy getting up close without being crowded by others.

See New York City from Above

There is nothing more amazing than viewing the New York City skyline from above. The sheer amount of concrete and skyscrapers is unmatched by anywhere else in the world and from above you can see some of the most iconic New York buildings.

The two best ways to view the New York skyline are by going to the top of some of the tallest buildings in the city, namely; the Empire State Building or the Rockefeller Centre. Both of these buildings offer tickets that allow visitors to soar to the tops of the buildings and admire the stunning views from hundreds of meters in the air.

The best building to go to for views of the city? In my opinion, the Rockefeller Centre has the best views. Regardless of where you choose to see the views from, be sure to get your tickets in advance! The best times – around 4-5 pm fill up quickly. This is because if you visit during these hours you can view the skyline in all of its beautiful states – during the day, during sunset, and when it’s dark!

Go to the 9/11 Memorial

No visit to New York City is complete without visiting the 9/11 memorial which pays tribe to those who were lost on the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centres. The memorial is free to visit for the public and is a very powerful sight. Here you will find the names of all those lost on 9/11 all around the dugouts of where the towers used to stand.

While here you can also visit the Memorial Museum and take a tour to further learn and delve into this tragic day that shapes New York to this day.

Walking tours are available in abundance in New York City, and in May in New York, they are the perfect thing to join in on! Eat at the Amazing Restaurants in the City

New York is foodie heaven! There are so many different restaurants all with unique and tasty dishes. You can truly find anything you could ever want in New York; from different cuisines to different dietary restaurants, to specialty meals, and more!

Brooklyn Bridge is one of the world’s most famous and iconic bridges. It is often packed with locals and tourists alike walking across its mega beauty to enjoy the stunning views of New York. Luckily, May in New York City welcomes fewer people so you may get a slightly less busy walk.

A walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn via this bridge is an NYC bucket list item that is not only good for you but offers beautiful views. If you want to enjoy it with fewer people try heading here at sunrise when only a few joggers and early risers are enjoying it.

Explore Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a more urban part of New York that is known for its amazing street art and local charm. It offers a welcome escape from the skyscrapers of Manhattan and is a wonderful area to explore.

If you are looking for the famous street art head to the Bushwick neighborhoods. The graffiti stretches on various streets. There are also a ton of trendy and unique bars and restaurants in Brooklyn that are perfect for taking a break for a meal.

See the Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building is a very unique building located in Manhattan that is worth viewing. This building is one of New York Cities most iconic buildings and is one of the pieces of architecture that makes the city recognizable. Walking to this building and capturing some photos of its unique triangular shape is a top thing to do in NYC.

Walk Around Time Square

Times Square is something you must see at least once while visiting New York. The hundreds of billboards, bustling streets, and the plethora of things to see is a feast for the eyes. However it is a bit of a tourist trap and a place where pickpocketing is commonplace, so be vigilant.

Enjoy Central Park

New York City’s Central Park is a stunning, expansive green space that offers the perfect getaway from all the concrete. There is so much to do in the park from renting bikes to renting a boat to sail along the water, relaxing on the grass, and more! It is the perfect place to head to in May in New York.

Walk through Wall Street

As one of the most famous streets in the world, Wall Street is something you have to do in NYC. Here you will find men and women in their finest business attire ready to work and make money on the street of finance and business. The views of the magical NYC skyline are something that never gets old. At night when the lights of the skyscrapers are illuminated by the dark contrasting sky is when the skyline looks its best. New York City is huge and finding the best place to stay varies. You can stay in Manhattan for closer proximity to attractions or save some money and stay in Brooklyn or another part of NYC. Regardless of where you stay getting around with public transportation is easy and you can go anywhere quickly.

May in New York is a great time to visit. There is so much to do and see during this month and the mild temperatures and fewer tourists make it all the more attractive.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

• Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
• Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
• Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
• Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
• Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
• Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
• Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

I love the rooftop bars of New York . You can sit and relax, enjoy a sensational view of the city and listen to relaxing music. All this mixes with the so-typical sounds of the city in the background, and if you have something delicious to drink or eat on top of that, it can’t get any better! Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

The Big Apple makes you dream, but you wonder if May is the right time to go there? Are you still asking yourself a lot of questions before you leave? Climate, visits, activities and events to discover in New York in May 2024 … We tell you everything here in this guide.

• Going to New York in May 2024

All year round, many travellers choose New York as their destination for a good time. In the middle of spring, May is an even better time to explore the “city that never sleeps”. Because at this time of year, the weather is perfect: temperatures are moderate, a little warm at times, but never too hot. Let’s just say that we have what it takes to walk around New York’s streets at ease, without being suffocated by the heat like in summer.

So, yes, you’re right to go to New York in May! Especially as there are still few tourists for most of the month, before the big summer holidays. So you’ll be able to enjoy your stay in a quieter, more comfortable setting.

A word of advice though : before you leave, buy a City Pass to avoid the queues at the entrances to the attractions.

New York is more pleasant to visit in May than in the middle of summer because airfares are still reasonable . On the other hand, hotel prices are starting to rise considerably. To keep your costs down, it’s best to book your rooms well in advance.

In May, all the conditions are right to enjoy New York. You can do a bit of everything. There are plenty of activities to do and outdoor visits will be much more enjoyable than in previous months.

Walk around in the city’s parks and gardens

May is the perfect time to spend a good time exploring the city. Because the weather is favourable, you can make the most of beautiful neighbourhoods such as Wall Street , Times Square, Greenwich Village, SoHo, and Chinatown as well as New York’s parks such as Central Park , Hudson River Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, to name but a few. Whether on foot or by bike, the experience is unique.

Cruise aboard a pleasure craft, take in the Manhattan skyline and explore some of New York’s greatest attractions such as the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge from the water.

See major sporting events

The biggest sporting events take place in May if the New York teams manage to qualify for the various playoffs, so you can still watch hockey and basketball!

Don’t worry, even if the Rangers ( hockey ) and Knicks (NBA) don’t manage to qualify for the play-offs, NYC still has some great sporting events on offer, including baseball and soccer . A visit to New York would be incomplete without seeing an MLB baseball match at Yankee Stadium.

The New York Red Bulls have two games at the Red Bull Arena in May, including a summit match against the New England Revolution.

New York City FC will have to make do with a single match at Yankee Stadium at the end of May.

Knicks in the play-offs

The chances of the New York Knicks qualifying for the play-offs are high, and we’ll keep you updated on the games if they manage to make the play-offs.

Rangers in the play-offs

Once again, 3rd in mid-February of the regular season for Rangers, more information to come and the matches will be displayed below in case of qualification.

If you’re in New York in the first week of May, you can take part in the Five Borough Bike Tour on 5 May . This major cycling event brings together over 30,000 participants who will take to the streets of New York for a race of around 70km.

Memorial Day is a holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May to honour all members of the US armed forces who have died in battle. Military parades are organised for the occasion.

Ninth Avenue International Food Festival

Gastronomic event, celebrated on the 3rd weekend of May . On this occasion, many culinary specialties from all over the world will be offered with an entertainment program including shows and concerts. With so much on offer in New York at this time of year, spring is one of the best times of the year for an unforgettable stay.
