Celebrity Cruises Caribbean 2022-2023 itineraries on 8 ships

The RCG-Royal Caribbean Group 's brand Celebrity  announced 2022-2023 Caribbean Winter Season based on 8 ships. Celebrity's Caribbean fleet includes 2 (newest) Edge-Class Edge and Apex , 4 recently ‘revolutionized’/ drydock refurbished liners Equinox , Silhouette , Summit , Millennium , and also Reflection and Constellation .

The 8-ship fleet will be homeported in Florida ( Miami , Tampa , Fort Lauderdale ) and San Juan Puerto Rico . The program offers 4- to 11-night island-hopping itineraries, with expanded 7-nights and a Panama Canal cruise .

Celebrity Apex, the fleet’s new Edge Series ship, is scheduled to sail round-trip from Celebrity Cruises' Terminal 25 at Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale FL on rotating 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. From mid-November 2022 through mid-April 2023, passengers can either visit Puerto Rico, Tortola , Saint Maarten , The Bahamas , and St Kitts  and Nevis ; or benefit from Florida, Key West , Belize , and Grand Cayman .

The original Edge Series ship, Celebrity Edge, sails from Fort Lauderdale FL on a 10-night Ultimate Southern Caribbean itinerary, calling at Saint Maarten, St Lucia , St Johns , Barbados , Saint Kitts and Nevis; an 11-night Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao itinerary; an 11-night Panama Canal and Southern Caribbean itinerary. 

Showing off new and “revolutionized” look, Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Silhouette, Celebrity Summit, and Celebrity Equinox, offer redesigned accommodations, bars, restaurants, and public spaces as they visit a variety of islands and pristine beaches.

Celebrity Equinox is sailing year-round from Fort Lauderdale FL for the entire 2022-2023 Caribbean season, offering 9-night winter itineraries through popular destinations in the Southern Caribbean, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saint Lucia, Antigua, and Barbados.

For the first time, Celebrity Millennium offers roundtrip sailings from San Juan on 3 different week-long Southern Caribbean cruises visiting a range of islands including Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, Grenada, Bonaire, Antigua, Dominica.

Celebrity Silhouette is due to sail from Miami Florida on a rotating schedule of long and short island sailings. Her 10-night itinerary calls at popular islands in the Eastern Caribbean; while the 4-night itinerary visits Key West and the Bahamas.

Celebrity Summit offers 3 different short Caribbean itineraries, featuring 4- and 5-night “quick escapes” to the Bahamas and Key West; Mexico and Key West; or Mexico and Grand Cayman.

Celebrity Constellation sails roundtrip from Tampa FL on a 10-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary; as well as an 11-night Ultimate Caribbean and The Americas itinerary, calling at Grand Cayman, Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico. Some sailings feature an overnight in Cartagena Colombia .

Celebrity Reflection sails on a pair of different week-long itineraries to either the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean, or Mexico, Jamaica and Grand Cayman.

Everything You Need to Know About the Celebrity Edge Cruise Ship

With cutting-edge design, beautiful facilities and even the world’s first “Magic Carpet” deck, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting new launches on next year’s cruise calendar.

The first of four new Edge Class ships to be unveiled, the 2,918-guest Celebrity Edge is set to debut in late 2018, and will redefine how passengers interact with their surroundings, through design which focuses on creating an intimate experience between guests and the ocean.

Homeporting in Florida’s Fort Lauderdale, bookings are already available for the ship’s two 7-night itineraries; an eastern and a western Caribbean cruise, or back-to-back sailings for a 14-night journey.

The luxury 1,004 ft. long new cruise ship, which was booked more than 800 times within just hours of launching online, debuts ahead of sister Edge Class Ships Celebrity Beyond – scheduled for delivery in Spring 2020 – and the yet unnamed third and fourth Edge Class ships in Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, respectively.

A Revolution in Luxury Accommodation

Celebrity Edge is already being hailed as the new standard in cruise vessel design, with modern, luxurious interiors created by world-renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE and visionary architect Tom Wright of WKK.

Edge will feature 918 revolutionary “Infinite Veranda” cabins – designed with spaces which will stretch from Stateroom doors to the water’s edge, removing the old feeling of a barrier between guests and the ocean.

By removing the traditional steel and glass partition between the balcony and cabin, and replacing it with a thin glass, folding screen, Infinite Veranda Cabins allow for the balcony area to be incorporated into the cabin space when the screen is open. These new glass panel screens will be controlled by guests at the push of a button, or should the weather turn while a guest has left the partition open, the bridge will have the ability to close the panel. Infinite Veranda cabins will also offer guests a new standard of space, measuring 226 sq. ft., expanding to 269 sq. ft. once the balcony has been opened. This is much larger than the current industry average, which sits at 172 sq.ft. to 183 sq. ft.

Celebrity Edge has also doubled the number of suites and added two entirely new categories of accommodation. Suites will expand from 5% of capacity on the Solstice-class ships to 12% on Edge. At the highest end, the new Iconic Suites – which sit above the ship’s bridge – feature panoramic windows and 700sq. ft. verandas for 270-degree views. The second new Suite Class, the Edge Villas, offer guest private plunge pools and direct access to The Retreat – a private sanctuary with an exclusive pool, lounge, restaurant and 24/7 personal butler service.

Celebrity Edge will also feature Celebrity Cruises first ever single-occupancy cabins, with 16 Infinite Veranda cabins designed specifically to cater for solo travellers, complete with queen beds.

In-room automation will allow guests to control and personalise everything, from lighting to temperature and service, by using a simple touch screen, whilst guest can sleep in perfect luxury thanks to Cashmere mattresses, as part of the Celebrity Cashmere Bedding Collection. Passengers will also be able to unlock their cabin doors using an app on their smart phones, thanks to state-of-the-art door lock technology.

Celebrity Edge, which was designed entirely in 3D, will also give guests the chance to “see through walls”, with a new range of digital services. Using an X-Ray Vision app on their mobile phones, passengers will be able to take a peek into usually private areas of the ship, including the gallery, bridge and even the engine room.

Dine in Eden, All-Day Long

Along with numerous restaurants, bars and lounges, Celebrity Edge will feature Celebrity Cruises sinfully good “Eden” – a three-deck lounge for eating, relaxing and entertainment.

With a capacity for over 300 passengers, Eden will span from Deck 3 – 5, with floor to ceiling windows and a wide range of activities and functions available throughout the day. In the morning, passengers can relax at the Eden Café or partake in a yoga class, whilst in the afternoon, guests can join in with hands-on enrichment classes or enjoy live performances – from aerialists to guitar players.

When the sun goes down, sinfully good culinary experiences and nightlife promise to indulge guests’ senses at the Eden Restaurant, before moving past the “Tree of Life” to the Eden Bar, where the 18ft. Library of Plants offers fresh ingredients for hand-crafted cocktails.

Those with access to private space The Retreat, can also dine in the speciality Luminae restaurant, with floor-ceiling windows and a menu crafted by Michelin-starred Chef Cornelius Gallagher.

Sinfully Good Entertainment

As well as exploring the culinary wonders of Eden, passengers will be able to relax, play and party with Celebrity Edge’s wide range of onboard entertainment.

Celebrity Cruises have teamed up with performance company Variety Worldwide, who will take on the role of ‘Edenists’ – providing guests with music, dance and performance art throughout the day, alongside tableside magicians, acrobats and performances at night.

Outside of Eden, Celebrity Edge guests will be entertained by a range of musicals and Las Vegas-style shows, live comedians, vocalists, themed parties, live bands, contests and talent shows. On the Rooftop Garden, tended daily by a resident horticulturist, daily games and activities will give way at night to live music and outdoor movie-dining experiences at “A Taste of Film”.

Celebrity Edge’s enrichment classes and events, which include guest speakers, live demonstrations and craft lessons, give passengers the chance to learn something new during their time onboard.

For young shipmates, Celebrity Cruises’ Youth Activities program provides entertainment from toddlers to late teens – with everything from treasure hunts to discos, pizza parties and talent shows.

First-Class Facilities for All Ages

From the 25-yard lap pool – the largest in the Celebrity fleet – to the onboard casino, Canyon Ranch SpaClub and Fitness Centre – Celebrity Edge will feature a wide range of luxury facilities for all ages and interests.

Guests can enjoy the adult-only Solarium Pool, a wide range of traditional and exotic spa treatments and the onboard hair salon, whilst younger passengers can indulge in ZSpa treatments for teens.

The pool deck will also debut the industry’s first two-story jogging track, as well as an asymmetrical design that features pool loungers positioned outward for ultimate sea views. Guests will also have the chance to book one of six rentable cabanas, designed with 20-foot ceilings and tulip-shaped hot tubs.

The state-of-the-art Fitness Center, which features Life Fitness treadmills, bikes and weights, can be used individually or with the guidance of one of Celebrity Edge’s expert personal trainers, or for those who prefer a class, the new ship will provide everything from Pilates to Yoga and Zumba.

Guests can wind down after a busy workout in one of the thermal suites, the stream room, sauna or whirlpool.

The World’s First “Magic Carpet” Deck

It’s not just Celebrity Edge’s luxury accommodation, first-class dining and wide range of onboard activities which will set a new precedent for the cruise ships of the future; this vessel is the first in the world to feature what Celebrity Cruises are dubbing their “Magic Carpet”.

Cantilevered to the side of Celebrity Edge, the Magic Carpet is a moving, multi-purpose deck, designed to provide up to 90 guests at a time with the most exciting venue-space in the history of cruising.

At 110 ft. long by 20 ft. wide, the Magic Carpet is roughly the size of a tennis court, and will travel 13 storeys high, resting at four different decks throughout the day. Opening out onto decks 2, 5, 14, 16, the Magic Carpet will provide different functions and guest experiences, dependent on where it is currently located.

On Deck 2, the Celebrity Edge’s Magic Carpet will act as a luxury embarkation station at Destination Gateway. This new area will allow guests to be whisked away in luxurious style to their port destination, via the redesigned Edge Launches. When not being used for excursions, the Destination Gateway will provide a learning and activities centre, featuring enrichment talks, conferences, shows, shopping events and even art auctions.

Moving up onto Deck 5, the Magic Carpet will act as an alfresco dining area for one of Celebrity Edge’s new, yet to be named, speciality restaurants , where guests can enjoy spectacular ocean views whilst tucking into fresh food.

Later in the day, the Magic Carpet may be found on Deck 14, where it provides an extension of the main pool area. Sun-worshippers will be able to take a dip in the pool before relaxing on the deck with a drink in hand, taking in the incredible views.

The Magic Carpet’s highest stop, on Deck 16, offers guests one of the most unique dining experiences they can discover onboard any cruise ship. The moveable deck becomes an breathtaking dining venue, where Celebrity Cruises will host extravagant culinary events, including the mouth-watering “Dinner on the Edge”. Guests will be taken on a world-class al fresco food experience, with uninterrupted views of the ocean.

I just want to get out of my house, already!  I'm banking on the fact that the world will look better come April 2022.  Just booked a solo infinite veranda stateroom.  If anyone wants to hang out and nosh a bit or grab a cocktail and watch the world float by, let me know.

Food & Drink

The food and drinks that are included in the retreat is incredible. We found the shows on the Edge to be some of the best we have ever seen on Celebrity. Celebrity has really stepped up the overall entertainment offerings on their Edge class ships, that includes the productions shows with singers, dancers and acrobats and the more intimate venues like the Club and Eden.

The first show, called Kaleidoscope Featured a variety of singers and dancers and colorful costumes and back drops. Also with the 180 Screen and wrap around orchestra seating there is not a bad seat in the house.

The next production show was a brand new show introduced the first segment of our cruise called Feel the Funk. This lively show featured pop/funk favorites from the 70’s to Current times.

We also enjoyed the show Colors of Life, I think that is what it was called. Anyway, the theme of the show was that the world started with a blank, grey canvas and a lonely sad person, as he makes his way through his troubles and begins to connect with others the background begins to fill with colors and by the end of the show there is a full spectrum of colors “of life” on the background screen.

This cruise also featured some variety musicians and other acts. A variety of musical and comedy acts including live music in Eden. The unique thing about the music in Eden is that is it called the Eden Acoustic experience with diffferent performers rotating in and out every night and changing even from one cruise to another, so no two performances would ever be the same. In the theater, one of my favorites was the touring act Ukebox, a four piece Ukulele rock group from Liverpool, England. They did a variety of songs but for sure included songs from that other 4 piece band from Liverpool. Also, Tommy from Canada who is a fun interactive folk rock type of singer and musician. Also we had “Almost Elton John” and Elton John tribute act, that is the best I have ever seen.

Also part of the entertainment line up are the wonderful party bands. Our cruise featured the all ladies band from Argentina called Mangifica. We sailed with them in May of 2022 to Greece on the Constellation and they were featured a lot more prominently on this cruise, even hosting “Headline The Band”. They did a concert of fun Christmas songs near the end of the cruise, but the think I liked most about this band was the lead singer was able to very closely replicate the original singers on all of her covers.

The Martin Bar Flair show was another one of my favorites that I would say is definitely part the entertainment program.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.

HOUSTON – More than two dozen people on a United Airlines flight to Houston on Friday became ill while the plane was traveling from Canada.

United Airlines flight 1528 was flying from Vancouver, British Columbia to Houston. During the flight, 25 people became sick.

According to the Houston Fire Department , the sick passengers reported symptoms of nausea.

“About an hour and a half before we hit Houston, they ask for if you’ve been on this cruise ship, could you raise your hand,” James Snell recounts from his flight.

All of the ill passengers were previously on a cruise. A total of 75 passengers flying on the plane were on that cruise.

Firefighters and paramedics met the passengers as they landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport following the five-hour flight from Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Then all of a sudden, the flight attendant, she put on a mask, and the guy next to me is like, ‘What do you think’s going on?’ And I’m like, ‘Bro, I don’t know. You know? I mean, COVID, we’re all going to die.’ You know what I mean,” said Snell.

Three people were “evacuated” from the airplane, but no one was taken to the hospital.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) the plane landed around 6:30 p.m.

“Then firetrucks and ambulances started pulling up,” Snell said. “They didn’t hold us very long, maybe 45 minutes-ish.”

Passengers aboard the airplane say that the pilot and flight attendants alerted them that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the illness.

“This is where it got weird,” Snell said. “He [the pilot] got over the speaker, but he came out to us and he said, ‘Hey, in my 25 years of flying, I’ve never seen anything like this. We have been quarantined by the CDC. Nobody can exit the plane until the CDC lets us off.’”

After being let off the plane passengers were screened by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.

“As soon as you got off, you got mobbed, wanting to know if you had any symptoms and did you want to be triaged,” Snell said. “But then they let us off and I thought, man, you’re letting us off in Houston airport. Like we’re going everywhere in the world. This is how it started the last time.”

The last time refers to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s what he and other passengers thought they could be dealing with.

“We’re all trapped in this tube, and we’ve all lived through Corona. And I was just like, ‘oh, come on. Not again,’” Snell said.

KPRC2 asked the FAA, CDC, Houston Fire Department and United Airlines for information about which cruise ship the passengers who got sick were on and for the illness, but none of the organizations would provide further information.

According to information from the CDC, there have been seven outbreaks of illness on cruise ships this year.

The most recent is a norovirus outbreak on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship.

Norovirus is commonly known as the “stomach bug” and can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It’s a highly contagious virus, but is typically not a severe illness and passes in a few days, the CDC reports.

According to Celebrity Cruises’ website , the Celebrity Summit ship is currently sailing between Seward, Alaska and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Vancouver is where the United Airlines flight full of sick passengers took off.

KPRC 2 asked Celebrity Cruises for more information about their outbreak and if it’s connected to the sick passengers that landed in Houston. We’re still waiting for an answer.

Meanwhile, United Airlines tells KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding that the plane is being pulled from rotation until it can be deep cleaned.

UNITED AIRLINES STATEMENT

“Several passengers who had been on the same cruise and did not feel well were on United Flight 1528 from Vancouver to Houston tonight. United Airlines is actively coordinating with health authorities to address the situation. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service. Ensuring the health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

CDC Statement

“CDC is aware of a flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, that arrived at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Friday, May 31.

Public health officers from CDC’s Houston Port Health Station worked with EMS to evaluate ill passengers on board. Most of the ill passengers reported mild GI symptoms. No passengers were noted to have a fever during the flight or upon public health assessment at landing. No passengers met CDC criteria for further public health follow-up. Passengers from the flight continued with their travel plans.”

Royal Caribbean Group Updates Its Status-matching Program — What to Know

Cruisers can now receive reciprocal benefits from all brands under Royal Caribbean Group.

Royal Caribbean Group is making it easier for frequent cruisers to reap the benefits of their loyalty by matching their status across each of its cruise lines.

Starting June 5, Royal Caribbean Group, which owns Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea, will provide a one-for-one status match across any of its brands, the cruise company shared with Travel + Leisure . Status matching applies to members of Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society, Celebrity’s Captain’s Club, or Silversea’s Venetian Society.

Currently, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises provide some status matching, but travelers are not guaranteed the equivalent tier. Previously, Silversea was not included its status-matching program.

“We strive to provide guests with experiences within our portfolio of brands that meet them for all of life’s moments,” Jason Liberty, the president and CEO of the Royal Caribbean Group, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Each of our differentiated brands have passionate fans who take pride in the status they've achieved through repeat sailings. In a first for the cruise industry, our new Loyalty Status Match program rewards guests traveling across our brands, and this is one more step in our journey of transforming a vacation of a lifetime into a lifetime of vacations.”

As part of the initiative, passengers who travel with one of Royal Caribbean Group’s cruise lines will now enjoy reciprocal benefits associated with their equivalent status tier. For example, Diamond Crown & Anchor Society members who sail on a Celebrity ship will automatically receive the benefits that come with Elite Captain’s Club’s status.

Royal Caribbean added travelers who are already enrolled in multiple programs will also be automatically status matched across each of the brands within seven days. However, points won’t be combinable across brands.

Travelers earn status by sailing for multiple nights and receive benefits like discounts on alcohol, Internet packages, and more. 

While status matching is quite common for airlines , it is less so in the cruise world. But it’s not unheard of as competitor MSC Cruises similarly allows guests to request a status match with other cruise lines, hotels, or tour operators.

Hawaiian state officials issued a warning to cruise ship operators that they will be "closely monitoring" the coast on Friday after a Celebrity Edge ship appeared to be dangerously close to Kauai's Na Pali a month ago.

"DOCARE determined there is insufficient evidence that supports probable cause or that there is clear and convincing evidence to pursue any criminal or civil action at this time," DLNR said in a news release .

Upon the ships return to the island, officers interviewed the captain who said he had total control of the ship and was "always in waters of not less than 30 meters depth," though he was "unclear" how far the ship was from shore.

Witnesses on Kauai also could not say with certainty that the ship had sailed too close to shore.

"Some witnesses did not wish to be involved in the investigation and others only had second-or-third-hand information or repeated what they saw on social media," the release said.

"While DOCARE's investigation could not conclude that the cruise ship, carrying more than 50 passengers, was traveling within 3,000 feet of the shoreline, community concerns and photographs appear to show the ship was indeed much closer to shore," DLNR chair Dawn Chang said in a letter addressed to Celebrity and other cruise lines on Friday.

He added: "This incident created a tremendous amount of angst in the community, as this area is highly protected and valued for its natural beauty and cultural significance.

"We are putting the industry on notice that the DLNR and the community will be closely monitoring activity not only along the Napali Coast, but throughout our state ocean waters."

Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity's parent company, told USA Today:"We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world."

It added:"We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

The Hawaii Tourism Authority previously confirmed that a second cruise ship was also under investigation, but did not disclose the vessel or line.

Investor’s Edge: Two cruise lines that are worth a look

In my lifetime, I’ve been on just a few cruises, the worst actually being on my honeymoon. It was two weeks of tedium in August of 1999, when the weather in Syracuse was great, but my cruise ship was — literally — passing icebergs in the North Atlantic. We were also the youngest cruisers by about 40 years.

The boredom over those two weeks became so bad, I was hoping, somewhat seriously, that we would hit one of the icebergs, a la the Titanic. The only difference being my desire that everyone would be safely rescued. Unfortunately, no luck there.

Needless to say, my view of cruises became quite jaded.

Modern cruises, however, are nothing like what I experienced 25 years ago. The cruise ships of today are essentially floating mega resorts complete with gourmet dining, casinos, theaters, laser tag, live music, and even roller coaster rides.

In fact, cruises are more popular than ever. According to Expedia, 2024 is projected to see a record 36 million global cruise passengers — a number that is expected to grow to nearly 40 million by 2027.

Recently I had a client rave about a Viking cruise that she and her husband experienced that went from Antwerp, Belgium to Amsterdam. As Viking Cruises just went public on May 1, I think it is a good time to look at this growing industry.

I will focus on only the two top players in the industry that local investors should consider embarking on.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN (TICKER: RCL)

Miami based Royal Caribbean International is the world’s largest cruise line by revenue and accounts for nearly 20% of all cruises taken around the globe.

Royal Caribbean vessels are the essence of the floating “mega resorts” I mentioned above, which center around offering just about every type of entertainment imaginable from rock climbing walls and water slides to ice skating rinks and Broadway shows. With a focus on luxury and top-tier service, Royal Caribbean is considered by many to be the gold standard in the mega-cruising industry.

The company is currently firing on all cylinders with record booking levels, ship capacity, and profit margins. In fact, after three years of losses during the pandemic from 2020-2022, Royal Caribbean’s earnings per share skyrocketed back to $6.69 in 2023 and are projected to crest $10 per share in 2024. Despite the stock being up more than 90% in the past year, the stock still sells at a very reasonable 19 times earnings — far lower than its top competitors.

I believe Royal Caribbean is a solid buy within the cruise industry.

VIKING (TICKER: VIK)

While most cruise brands try to offer a large variety of experiences and entertainment that appeal to everyone, Viking unapologetically does not. Viking offers high-end adults-only cruises for the affluent and intellectually curious.

Viking sails across 88 countries in all seven continents. The hallmark of a Viking cruise is world-class accommodations, food, and curated cultural experiences both on and off the ship.

The company’s “secret sauce” is its niche position and fiercely loyal customer base. In fact, more than 50% of patrons return for another Viking cruise and Viking’s total revenue per passenger is more than four times larger than a standard cruise line.

According to Bank of America, Viking’s average cruise is booked 11 months ahead of time, providing meaningful earnings visibility.

Furthermore, while most cruise lines focus mainly on the Caribbean, more than 60% of Viking’s excursions take place on European rivers, allowing it to carve out a niche with little competition.

Viking is undergoing an aggressive expansion strategy to keep up with rising demand. The company plans to build 14 river cruise ships and 10 ocean ships by 2030.

The company just went public on May 1 and already the stock has risen more than 12%. With only a $13 billion market cap, Viking has a lot of room to grow.

The risks involved with these stocks is a steep economic downturn or, as in what happened in 2020, a worldwide crisis like a pandemic. Barring that, however, the cruise lines in general have been very good investments.

To note, I don’t personally own either of these stocks. I prefer owning meaningful positions in a lesser number of businesses. That said, I am currently looking into a Viking cruise later this year and I think this the cruise line stock with the most runway.

Viking and Royal Caribbean are two very different, but still best in breed cruise players that are growing rapidly. For growth-oriented investors, either is an excellent stock to consider setting sail on.

Tom Cruise Marks 10 Years Since Edge of Tomorrow with 'Great Friend' Emily Blunt: 'Incredible Memories'

Tom Cruise is marking a decade since the release of Edge of Tomorrow and praising costar Emily Blunt .

On June 6, the actor, 61, shared a post on Instagram reflecting on the production and release of 2014's Edge of Tomorrow, including his fellow cast and crew, especially Blunt, 41.

"It's been 10 years since Edge of Tomorrow first hit theaters!" Cruise wrote. "I want to take the opportunity to thank Emily Blunt once again for being such a great friend and brilliant actress . I love her performance in this film. Her dedication. Her humor. Her vulnerability and power. She brought it all."

"This anniversary brings back incredible memories," he continued, before thanking the film's director, more of his costars, including late actor Bill Paxton.

"My first collaboration with Doug Liman. Rejoining the indomitable Brendan Gleeson. And my first time working alongside the great [Paxton]. His performance and the character he created left an indelible mark on this film."

Led by Cruise as a military public relations officer with little combat experience, Edge of Tomorrow is an apocalyptic sci-fi film that takes place after Europe has been occupied by aliens. Cruise's character is forced into combat against his will, and finds himself stuck in a time loop, fighting the same battles over and over again as Blunt trains him as a fighter.

"Hitting this kind of tone was no easy task," Cruise continued in his caption. "The writing and storytelling of Christopher McQuarrie made the movie work. Along with the dedication of our entire team who helped bring it to the screen — it was an absolute joy creating it with you all."

"To everyone who has enjoyed this film over the years, thank you for being a fan. And thank you to Warner Bros. for making this film," he added. "I can't wait to share more about the great movies we’re working on."

Blunt has also been candid about her time on the film, opening up in a 2022 interview on the  SmartLess  podcast, hosted by  Jason Bateman ,  Will Arnett  and  Sean Hayes , about the physical difficulties she had on the set.

"We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would've been great if we had CGI'd them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way," Blunt said during the podcast, noting "there was nothing cozy" about these 85-lb. suits.

"I was like, 'Tom, I'm not sure how I'm going to get through this shoot,' and just started to cry," Blunt continued, before revealing how Cruise got her to laugh and power through the production.

"I was like, 'I'm feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot,' and he literally goes — he just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ' Come on, stop being such a p----, okay ?'"

"And I did laugh, and then we got through it," Blunt added, though she noted that she ultimately did injure her ribs and collarbone during the shoot. "But the training was intense. It was like twice a day we trained for it."

While appearing at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles for a  moderated conversation  with filmmaker Rob Marshall last year, Blunt also spoke about working with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow, sharing that he helps to "tighten the screws on everyone when it comes to what you think you're capable of."

"Because he can do everything and wants to do everything, it makes you want to meet him where he is at," she saide, adding, "He's so inspiring. Such a doll to me."
